Companies from Google to Twitter to Kickstarter (where I funded my album and find endless innovation) have already spoken out against the legislation.

Let's use the very spaces corporations want to control to knock this down!

H A P P Y H O L I E V E R Y D A Y S

I can't tell you how many blogposts, emails, webcasts, and whatnot I've gotten advocating that I go into holiday-time CD-selling mania. I'm not on board. Last year I thought ok, I'm not into this sell sell sell buy buy buy mentality, but maybe people really would like to give indie music instead of ugly reindeer sweaters and Wiis. As it turns out, I just felt cheesy and pushy, and didn't sell more than any regular ol' everyday day. And every day is worth celebrating! So this season, I want to wish you HAPPY EVERYDAYS, and share with you *free* goodies, shows, inspirational and funny things, and projects to look forward to.

(Caveat: In the spring I might ask for Kickstarter donations for my music video, since the whole world isn't quite on board with my #occupycreativity type of #neweconomy yet and I will have to rent an astronaut suit.)

My music video, slated for storyboarding in January and shooting in Feb/March, will center around the metaphorical relationship between an astronaut and his wife. (Probably both played by me. I made a Tumblr! (Yeah yeah I know, way to jump on the bandwagon 800 years later.) Still, I'm super excited about sharing short snippets and snapshots of the cuckoo, wonderful New York I experience every day. Sometimes directly related to music, sometimes just creative fodder, sometimes important items, like standing up for free internet.
I've recently gotten into house shows which have been so rewarding and good for the soul -- thank you so much! This is what music is all about. Here are pictures from November and December. Have we talked about RadioLab's "Loops" episode yet?! I won't say anything (spoiler). Just listen to it. Like frosting for your spirit. (If your spirit were a cake--)
Also, one of their shorts, "Slow," is all about the sound of voices and has the most touching, music-related, story culmination ever. (Fellow iPod subway listeners, I just had something in my eye. Really.)
Which oh wow, speaking of, I'm Not Crying" is an oldie but goodie from Flight of the Conchords.
And for a fun reminder gone full circle, here's a Colbert video about standing up for #openinternet. (Just a case in point: For this newsletter, I used MailChimp, a free/uncensored enews site to send you a message full of creative commons and personal images pulled off of the free/uncensored sites, Google, Flickr, and Facebook; sounds from free/uncensored podcasts on iTunes and individual project sites; free/uncensored videos on YouTube of free/uncensored shows promoted using ArtistData, a free/uncensored tool for musicians...I think you get where I'm going with this. :) Today's our chance, good people. New York I've been playing regular shows in the Big Apple at venues with real pianos so fantastic they make me drool a little bit. Also in the drool category is that I've been lucky enough to perform with some ridiculously talented string, guitar, accordion--even suitcase drumkit!--players, and that will continue! I've also really enjoyed meeting new fans who are popping up, and hope to see you at a show soon! Next couple are:

Adult Recess

Yesterday I walked by a playground full of kids going crazy at recess. Aside from a few pick-up games of something involving a ball and a box, everyone was just, well, going nuts. Or hanging out. Just doing what they do. Kids were talking to each other, trying out ideas, playing made-up games, running around and getting their energies out and taking energy in. In short, it was a totally insane and powerful scene.

And then it hit me. Adults don't really do that. What would adult recess be?

Moments of creativity to me seem like the only times when we let loose, let ourselves try things (hopefully) without criticism or ulterior motives (like financial success, fame, networking, viral marketing). Later we come back to think, discuss, revise and polish. But that moment of adult recess is vital to making art, to saying what you're trying to say.

This is probably true with close friendships too, which is the only thing I can think of that even remotely resembles the ecstasy and challenge of creative pursuits.

What do you think? What's your adult recess? And how can we have more of it?!

Open Internet is key to indie music - speak up before Dec. 21st!

Free Press writes: "FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski just announced plans to issue weak regulations that give just about everything to giant phone and cable companies, and leave Internet users with almost nothing."

This rule goes to a vote on Dec. 21, so now's the time to sign the Free Press petition!

I think this is *the* issue of the moment.

With a privatized internet, I wouldn't be able to share music tracks with you on sites like MySpace and @SoundCloud. I wouldn't have the budget to blog. I wouldn't be able to fund albums and tours with your loving support on @Kickstarter. I wouldn't be able to gather community on Facebook, send emails about my upcoming shows, or be interviewed on podcasts and radio stations free to listeners. I wouldn't be able to throw giveaways, be part of a virtual songwriter's club with members across the country, stream live shows, or use free websites like @ArtistData and @Nimbit that help musicians with everything from booking to performing.

I could go on for pages about how the internet helps real art connect with real people, but I think you get the idea.

We don't need one more venue where companies troll for profit and indie efforts are shut down. We need a venue where people can speak freely, connect with each other, and make media that reflects the diverse face of our nation.

Sign, Tweet, post, stand on chairs and shout about it. This is our last chance. For real.

Giving Thanks - You deserve gifts!

It's the day after Thanksgiving, and I'm still feeling grateful to everyone who's supported my indie music efforts. In fact, I feel that way year round, so it's time for tangible gifts that show my appreciation!

Music is a human thing. You say things you can't say otherwise with music, you get inspired by new mind-blowing bands with friends, you hang out at shows and meet interesting people. Music scores your life in everything from movies to shopping malls, and more personally, gadgets like the iPod give you a private soundtrack for everything from the daily commute to falling in love.

So what I'm saying is, you're into music. You're downloading that gotta-have-it song from iTunes, cutting tracks you love into YouTube vids, relaxing with wine and something sassy on the stereo after work. You're already out there sharing your new fave tracks and going to shows with friends--and you should be rewarded for what you're already doing to get the word out about indie music!

It's simple.

If you encourage people to join the fun on Facebook, get some friends to buy my new album, throw a house concert or line up a show, spread the love on Twitter, stir up a flurry over my YouTube videos, drag (er, I mean bring) buds to my gigs, or whatever way of sharing you want to suggest, you'll get free musical stuff from yours truly.

There and back!

Tour to the midwest was simply spectacular. During the third week of August, I drove halfway across the country and back with bassist John Lenis and composer/singer/pianist extraordinaire Nehemiah Luckett.

We played shows in Minneapolis, Chicago, and Pittsburgh. Old friends surprised us, new friends were made, and a good time was had by all. (Well, as far as we've been told. I certainly did.) The warmth of our audiences, the cushiness of our van's seats, the company of great friends--seriously, sign me up, I want to do it all over again.

Well, I could go on gushing about this forever (take a road trip! play music! it makes you and everyone around you feel great!) so let's instead have some photos. A picture's worth a thousand words anyway, right?

I'd like to write a nice rambly blogpost about all the crazy prep and fun and party itself, but the thing is, after all that I'm pretty tired!

This is the most exciting thing I’ve posted in a long time. Actually, maybe EVER.

Come celebrate that I finally finished the album by listening to live music, drinking, and being merry in the very space where it was recorded!

Play Me, I'm Yours

Since today is Make Music NY Day, I was all psyched to play the Play Me, I'm Yours piano in Grand Army Plaza. So psyched in fact, that I actually got up at 8:30am (which for me is an olympic event) and jauntily walked to the plaza to find the piano.

At first I didn't even see it, but then I spotted a tiny yellowish looking thing under some plastic.

And there it was, sitting in the middle of the concrete -- with cars whizzing by on both sides and gardeners watering the plaza greenery -- looking as peaceful, playful, and cute as anything. It even had a tiny square bench and funky curvy legs. (I dig the stripes too.)

The only thing is, it was locked. And teasingly so, with one of those 3-number-combo gym locker type locks that probably would open if you sneezed on it. But I have no lock-picking skills (or going-to-jail-skills), so I took some photos, stood next to the Grand Army Fountain to cool off, and sauntered home.

I'll try again later.

And in the meantime, note to self: When in NY, 9am means at least 11am, possibly tomorrow. Maybe next week.

Music on the street

It's summer. That means people are out and about, there are street fairs everywhere, and I'm sweating buckets.

Today (and yesterday, too), all three of those things came together while I played at 5th Avenue Music in the Streets. I was lucky enough to team up with super-talented guitarist, Sam Stein (of The Great Republic of Rough & Ready), and do some jazz standards along with some of our own material.

Thanks to there being lots of water and good spirits, I really enjoyed playing music on the sidewalk. I love the idea of music existing in a public space where people of all stripes can enjoy it.

Thanks Sam! (and Aunt Suzie's, for having us outside their restaurant!)
