Fireworks - Downtown Kingston, Jamaica

2016-01-01T16:17:00.001-05:00

Happy New Year Everyone!!! It was really windy on the waterfront this year and the rockets were all over the place. It makes you appreciate shooting these things from a mile or more when you have to be constantly recomposing to try and follow the rockets. I've also included the human element into the shots this year. Enjoy

"Nike - The Guardian"

This image reminded me of a statue that overlooks the Welch town of Six Bells. It's a pity most of the shadow detail is lost while displayed online . However, I liked the dark hollow lifeless feeling the lighting seems to give to the person standing on the platform. Contrastingly Nike (the winged Greek Goddess of victory) is often sculpted with hands in a triumphant pose.

The seemingly stoic form watching the struggling man pulling the rope, wanting to assist but can only witness - the shoes can only do so much.

Got to take a few photos of some pipes and a old leyland parked up in a factory while on assignment. Added a bit of "sepia" to give a aged look. Hope you guys like the effect.

Had some time to take a few shots today before a shoot a the national stadium here in Kingston. I decided to try my hand at some abstracts using the chairs, though i'd rather call them 'extracts' just as Ansel Adams refered to his "abstract" work.

Ansel Adams prefered the term "Extract" as opposed to "Abstract". Adams explained his choice of words, saying "I prefer the term extract over abstract, since I cannot change the optical realities but only manage them."

TAG - A Creative twist

On assigment for TAG i had the chance to grab a few shots to do some creative work with. Enjoy the samples below.

Jamaica 50 Fireworks

2012-08-07T22:20:00.001-05:00

The night started off great, we set up shop on the hill overlooking the stadium and the Jubilee Village. Turned on a Portable TV then started doing some exposure tests. Then in the middle of a performance some fireworks shot off.

All we could think was WTF... seriously what kinda half ass firework display was that. A couple in a parking lot below us exclaimed "thats all folks...bumbo claat!!". Clearly they were as dissapointed as we were. Determined that the meager display was not the glorious display we were promised we hunkered down to await the actual end of the ceremony. The couple hastily drove off.

As the ceremony ended and the credits started rolling on the small 7" LCD display infront of us we heard in the distance the Master of ceremonies instruct the performers on the field to sit and some other thing that was hastily mumbled. At 10:33 pm the distinct thud of a projectile launching echoed across the hill. The next 15 minutes was magical. Though my friend's poor daughter - who he took out just to see the fireworks - was clearly traumatised.

Enjoy the selection. Applogies for the poor quality my baby is in the shop.

This was the start of the final sequence. Unfortunately the wind died down and the fireworks were just bursting in the smoke they generated. They were however awesome to watch.

Comming soon.. soon ish...

So i've been in a kinda creative doldrum of sorts... partly due to battlefield 3 and life being a mess. New post will be up early next month... stay tuned :>

First off for the New Year

As usual the my new years crew headed out to the Palisadoes to grab a nice spot to shoot the fireworks on the Kingston waterfront. Enjoy the pics.

Guerilla Lighting

2011-02-20T19:56:00.001-05:00

On Wednesday the 14th the Technicians of the Philip Sherlock Centre on the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies put on a light show.

The chapel as it normally looks

I was only able to capture the Mona Chapel when it was lit and the Aqueduct. However as it was getting late and due to some technical issues I missed the lighting of the aqueduct but took some shots anyway. Enjoy.

Palisadoes had its traffic and parties. The usual bit. However me and the crew were there for the fireworks. Aside from the constant swearing of the people stuck in the traffic jam trying to get to the French Connection party it was all good. Enjoy the photos below.

Portland Bight (2 of 2)

Rocky Point

Funny enough for a protected zone the Portland Bight Protected Area (PBPA) is full of commercial and industrial areas. Go Figure.

There are two Bauxite ports, one at Rocky Point and the other at Port Esquivel. The Jamaica Broilers Group has a Ethanol Dehydration Plant at Port Esquivel as well. There are also several fishing villages within the PBPA. Jamaica Power Company has a ailing power plant in Old Harbour bay as well. I believe it is now complimented with a power barge moored on its western side.

Aside from the above the PBPA is a beautiful place. It is home to several mangrove forrests that provide shelter for young fish. As well as several rivers. The most popular of which is Salt River.

As we left Salt River and circled around Rocky point a small squall set in while we were in open water headed to Pigeon Island. I have come to realise that experiencing some wind and rain at sea is far different from on land (see previous post).

Past the squall

Pigeon Island is a lush green isle in the middle of the mouth of the bight. A beautification project that started off as a hobby for John Greaves (see article) keeps the island this way. Its now filled with coconut trees and other vegetation.
