Quite the project I took on….custom valances for my friend’s dining room. The combination of the bay window angles, different sized windows, the toile patterned fabric and scallops (oh, and a lot of geometry) was quite the challenge.

The most important tip I can offer is to create a VERY accurate paper pattern and “test” hang it on the rods. Once I was sure that the pattern was right, smooth sailing!

Urban Pop In Suburbia

Urban Pop, on display through April 12 at the Main Line Art Center features 3 artists – DISTORT, Jay Walker and Leslie Friedman.

DISTORT earned a BFA from the University of Pennsylvania and a certificate in Painting from The Pennsylvania Academy of fine art. His work featured below steps away from a traditional canvas. The “scrolls” are aeresols cans and the “shields” are hoods and front ends of cars. (Oldsmobiles, I think I overheard him say to another viewer. ) This video shows the artist at work, transforming a spray paint can into scroll art. MUST WATCH!

Jay Walker moved to Philly in 2004 to study at the PA Academy of Fine Arts. At first you don’t notice but he uses vinyl tape as him medium to create the large scale forms on the walls and ceilings. This sounds like a duct tape DIY project to do in my home!

Leslie Friedman is a printmaker earning her degree from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. Her work in this installation is printed on to linoleum tiles. At first, I didn’t want to walk on it, who would do that? But I quickly overcame my reservation and sat on the oversized “pouf” in the corner.

Do you know…Marie Elcin?

Marie is a fiber artist, predominately working in embroidery. She is also an educator at a Philadelphia school and at Fleisher Art Memorial, teaching “Stitch and Surface” and “Screen Printing on Fabric”.

In August of 2011, I had the opportunity to take a a week long intensive “Stitch and Surface” class. Since taking the class, I have stayed in contact with Marie through various events and spent some time at one of her shows late last year at the Philadelphia Cathedral. Take a look at her amazing work!

And then…the cathedral was just as interesting. How beautiful??

Fiber Arts for the Weary…I Mean Wari…Sorry

Ancient works from the Wari people of the Andes Mountians, Peru from 600-1000 AD, were stunning examples of fiber art. The Wari’s, like many ancient cultures, did not develop a writing system and relied on art work as a means of communication.

For the first time ever, “Wari: Lords of Peru”, comprised of objects from private collections are on display in North America. I saw it at the Cleveland Museum of Art but it will travel to the Fort Lauderale Museum of Art and the Kimbell Art Museum in Texas. For more details on these and other objects in this collection.

But, let’s not dwell on cultural studies, archeology, anthropology and sociology and be inspired by intricate, colorful fibers that were made very long ago (that I would use for my sewing projects today!) Enjoy!

Do you know Art Star in Philly? The shop, located at 623 North 2nd Street, Philadelphia, contains handmade items that are carefully curated by the shop owers, Erin and Megan. From fashion to home decor to super cute plushies, it’s worth your visit…and I’m not just saying that because my bags are sold in the store, really!

Props to My Best Girl

There is resident artist in my house…someone that dedicates most of her free time doodling, drawing, creating nail art and decorating cupcakes, while researching new hair styles on You Tube oh, and going to school, of course. It’s my very own 11 year old, Violet James.

If you’d like to see more of her work, she is currently on display at the Wayne Art Center through April 14.

Shoe Obsession

On a trip to the garment district in NYC, my first stop last week was to the Museum at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology). Just footsteps away from my MegaBus drop off, visting the school’s museum is always my kick-off to a day in the Big Apple. Shoe Obssession, on exhibit through April 13, is a true, very true statement…the rest of the day shoes were on my mind. Should I buy a new pair of shoes…run over to M&J Trimming for some feather trim to DIY a pair…how can I convert the design ideas into a purse… could even walk in them? (verdict – yes, def!) No photos are allowed in the exhibit so you will need to see for yourself. Other current exhibits include – Boots: The Height of Fashion and Fashion and Technology.

The shoe debate…could I walk in these? Oh, yeah!

Student Art Show At Fleisher Art Memorial

The 115th Fleisher Student Art Show came to a close on Friday, March 22. It was an honor to participate this year with so many talented artists. My husband’s comment was “Wow, this is student art?” Not sure what he was expecting, but the work was definately not “student-ish”.

My piece was a pink, turquoise and eggplant, large envelope clutch that I made by silkscreening, stenciling and stamping ink onto muslin. It’s position on the wall, between fiber art and screenprinting on paper, was the perfect setting. (See my clutch and cross body bag using the same fabric here.)
