He first contacted me about one of my photographs when he was overseas because it reminded him of home. I was honored to donate my work to his locker and he surprised me later by ordering a large version for his family's home when he returned. <br /><br />The reason this photograph reminds me of him is because he is a long distance runner. Although his usual terrain is desert sand, I could as easily imagine him on this frigid snowy prairie, being just as dedicated to his morning run as this lone runner and his two dogs. So this one is for you Pj. The sun was just starting to burn off the mists on the snow covered prairie. Tracks of various animals; coyotes, rabbits, weasels, and mice crossed the crusty snow in patterns of pursuit or escape. The wide open space which seemed barren at first glance was full of life. It captured me with its simplicity as nature always does. I too hold that sentiment close to my heart, but it is tempered with the reality of true mountain living experience. When living in a remote environment you are at the mercy of nature, and she has no mercy. I never meant to put it off for so long and when we finally did make plans I had my camera charged and anticipated getting many shots. Unfortunately, this is the only decent shot I got as that storm really did roll in and it poured the whole time! Sometimes it just goes that way. We had a fun day out anyway and ending up visiting Cave of the Winds. I am planning on going back for a second try this next year. On the way is this abandoned mountain cabin. I had been here before and wanted to come back and get more shots. One of my earlier photographs, <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/17574991/colorado-abandoned-cabin-rustic-western">Natures Return</a>, was taken here in 2006. The stark contrast between the cabin ruins and the beautiful mountain forest is evident. I am not sure whether I look at this as spoiled wilderness or as nature's amazing ability to reclaim. We found a small deli, a sunny deck with chairs, and settled in. I was enchanted with the coastal life style. Californians with dreads gave us big sourdough sandwiches, little children chattered excitedly at their grandparents, and sea kayaks in a crayon box of colors waited for the adventurous. The gentle rays of the sun at sea level were cool by California standards, but felt warm to this Colorado girl. The sea breeze was intoxicating. The sights and smells foreign as I stood enthralled by the beauty of the aquamarine water. The birds wheeled overhead as the sea lions lazily rolled over and scratched, all as the fresh water of the Russian River meet her primordial beginnings in the salty sea.<br />

I loved the Russian influence of the architecture especially the chapel seen in this fine art photograph. The shape and form of the turrets and steep roof have elegant lines and produced beautiful shadows. During my visit last June the site was closed for renovation, but we did walk around the perimeter of the fort. I think it gave me a unique perspective of an "outsider" looking in as we approached the fortification. The cicadas sing at night, the hummingbirds are leaving, and the chokecherry bushes are turning a burnt orange. And also the wild sunflowers are at their peak. Nature chooses brilliant colors to decorate the mountain hillsides in yellow daisies, orange leaves, and purple sage. I believe autumn has always been my favorite season.

We do have seagulls in Colorado, although we refer to them as terns, and the occasional cormorant ventures to our large lakes too. But watching these birds next to the turbulent roaring Pacific ocean as it crashes and sprays water over jagged rocks is an entirely different experience. I hope that I brought that wonderful day to you with my photography.

The turn of the century architecture is stunning, but I found intriguing a simple little sign proclaiming "Priest Parking" on a gray weathered fence. Maybe it was the evidence of no one ever parking there that I found amusing or maybe it was just that I never thought of priests as having assigned parking spots in such a rural location. Either way, I hope you like it.

Our hosts suggested that we drive to the coast and we might be lucky and drive out of the rain. I understand how the Rocky Mountains affect our Colorado weather, but I had no knowledge of Pacific coastal weather. But our friends were absolutely correct.
