As Appeared in the Racine Journal Times January 31, 2011 Posted in Local on Monday, January 31, 2011 6:44 am Updated: 6:48 am.

RACINE – Focus on Community staff and volunteers invite the Racine community to help celebrate 30 years of excellence from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Johnson Building Commons, 555 Main St. Refreshments will be served and a short presentation will begin at 6 p.m. to honor past accomplishments as the organization looks towards the future.

In 1978, The Junior League of Racine conducted a needs assessment to appraise community problems, needs and resources. A plan to discourage youth alcohol and drug abuse was seen as a top issue, “urgently or definitely needed” in Racine County. After a great deal of research, study and planning, the Junior League decided to begin a county-wide council to increase public awareness, to provide prevention education, to advocate for quality treatment, and to provide information and referral services. Focus on Community (Focus), formerly the Racine Council on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse, was established in 1980.

Thirty years later, Focus on Community is a leader in the prevention field in Racine County and the state of Wisconsin. As youth are exposed to more outside influences, the need for prevention education has never been greater.

Focus is the only agency in Racine County dedicated to the prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse (ATODA), and its diverse staff provides a wide range of prevention services to youth and families. These services include prevention programs, information and referral services, and community-based prevention initiatives aimed at creating healthy environments.

For reservations to attend the 30th anniversary celebration, call Focus on Community at (262) 632-6200 or go to www.focusracine.org.

With nearly 3,000 services hours performed during High School and earning the highest GPA in her class, Yijing “Jean” Xin from The Prairie School was chosen to receive the Junior League of Racine 2010 “Volunteerism in the Racine Community” $2,000 Scholars

JLR is proud to award the 2010 Volunteerism in the Racine Community $2,000 Scholarship to Yijing “Jean” Xin, a talented graduating senior from The Prairie School who embodies the spirit of every Junior League member around the world. Two excerpts from Jean’s essay reveal the depth of Jean’s compassion for others. First, “Volunteerism is both a cause and effect of a flourishing community. A community is more than just a group of people living in the same geographical location –it is a group of people who care about each other.” Second, “Volunteerism, overall, is humanity. It means that we have the capacity to care and to give back. It means we are not content to rest on the laurels of our blessings, but would rather see others offered the same opportunities we were. Volunteerism means that we want life, not just a living.” Jean will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts to pursue a degree in Biological Engineering with a minor in Economics and/or Management. The JLR and entire community wish you great success!

“The Junior League has great foresight in choosing to support issues surrounding teen fathers as one of its focus areas,” said Ahmad Qawi, YMCA Community Development Program director. “If teen fathers understand the importance of their participation and how to participate with their children right from the beginning, they’re children will grow up more likely to succeed.”
This partnership of the Junior League and the YMCA will be a year- long effort to find, teach, support and encourage teen fathers through a variety of workshops and classes, as well as through recreational opportunities for themselves and for them to participate in with their kids.

Kids Cafe Christmas Party
PAUL SLOTH paul.sloth@journaltimes.com | Posted: Wednesday, December 16, 2009
Children talk with Santa Claus Wednesday, December 16, 2009 during the Kids Cafe Christmas party at Wayman A.M.E. Church, 424 N. Memorial Drive. The event was organized by the Junior League of Racine.
RACINE – Isaiah Nesbitt traced his hands on green construction paper. Then he gathered a stack of paper and carefully cut out his tracings.
In the basement of the Wayman A.M.E. Church, 424 N. Memorial Drive, Nesbitt, 11, glued his construction-paper hands to a piece of paper to make a Christmas tree decoration. At the same time, his brother, Jaylen, decorated a Christmas tree cookie, well, three to be exact, complete with frosting and sprinkles. He ate a few, but carefully folded one up in a napkin to take home to his dad.
The brothers usually spend Wednesdays at the church, which hosts the Kids Café program weekly. Most weeks, Isaiah, Jaylen and their other brother, Bryce, come to the church for tutoring help with homework, to play games and have a hot meal.
This Wednesday was a little different. When Isaiah and his brothers arrived, they were surprised to see a pile of presents near the front of the room.
“This is the first time I’ve been here for one of these parties and I think it’s really cool,” said Isaiah, a sixth-grader at Gilmore Middle School. “It’s really good that they do this for us.”
This year marked the second annual Christmas party sponsored by the Junior League of Racine. About 15 members of the club and their family members volunteered to throw the party for the children.
In years past, the club has organized Christmas parties for other community organizations, but chose Kids Café again this year because of the number of children they can reach, said Carolyn Heifner, a Junior League member who helped organize this year’s event. The group donated all the supplies used for the party. They also donated money to purchase presents for the nearly 90 children who were expected to attend Wednesday’s event.
On most Wednesdays, Chuck Tyler and the people who volunteer to help with Kids Café, try their hardest to connect with children by helping them with their homework. As Tyler sees it, it’s an effort to keep as many children as possible on the right path.
This year’s Christmas event was yet another example of the important work volunteers do in the community, Tyler said. He was happy that the Junior League was willing to spend some time getting to know the children he works with on a weekly basis.
Before the children sat down for dinner and before any presents were handed out, Santa Claus paid a visit. The children cheered as he walked into the room. No sooner had he taken a seat then children like Tanjany Lewies, 5, began pelting him with questions.
“Does (Mrs. Claus) make good cookies? Does she got a hat like you?” she asked before inquiring about Santa’s appearances elsewhere around Racine. “My friends say they saw you at Walgreens.”
