1. Please introduce yourself, your professional career and your company.

I am Junior Sanchez-LION, a family man, networker, entrepreneur, and CEO of RIFT SUCCESS. From the time I was a boy business was my passion, everything from the lemonade stand I had in front of our house to my quite lucrative candy selling business in school. Business and helping others get what they wanted was all I could think about, it was as though I had a passion for it. This unyielding passion drove me to not just want to advocate change in the world, but to become change in the world one day. College led me to Business Management, with particular attention to the Recruiting/Human Resources and Sales Industries. The jobs I held proved to be a time well spent, for I learned the value one individual can have in an organization. This reason made me mandate myself to be the best at anything I did and still do (I solidly stand by my product, for my product, is me). Work was not enough for me though, as I never gave up on wanting to become the change. I began networking tirelessly and soon met some of the most brilliant minds in business today. Through conversations I realized that many of us faced one common problem, employment, and lack thereof. I sat down frustrated on the hill behind the house from my youth, which overlooked Sing Sing Correctional Facility, suddenly, something clicked…What about those that come out of prison? Our team consists of a Recruiting & Employment Division, which pairs up with job seekers of all kinds and trades in order to aid them in finding their right company fit. And of course, the RIFT SUCCESS “niche,” our 2^nd Chance Division, which provides work and career opportunities for those ex-incarcerated individuals that wish to return to the workforce.

The fact remains that recently released, ex-incarcerated individuals need employment once released in order to provide for themselves, their families, and the economy but are finding it difficult to do so. They’ve come to us and asked us to be their voice in the employment community. At RIFT SUCCESS, we work with employers that wish to provide a second chance to those seeking one without prejudice.

On June 22^nd, 2010, we were invited to join the NYS Prisoner Justice Conference as part of the NYS Prisoner Justice Network. A wonderful collaboration whose goal is to unite all New York State organizations that are actively working on the many diverse prisoner justice issues and have come together to share ideas, information, energy, strategies, hope, and inspiration. Shake Things Up! By Jaxi West

Unique - Redefined in N.Y.

There aren’t many individuals who really strike me as 100% unique. But I met one of those individuals today, 10/28/10. And while this very impressive person runs what many would tag as an ‘ordinary corporate business’, the CEO behind this company is anything but ordinary.

In fact, he is outstandingly unique! The stage is his - I have determined he has outdone me in a few areas :) I also think he is the perfect example of what many can do in their world to “Shake Things Up!” So I am honoring him and his business genius in this “Shake Things Up!” Newsletter.

I can almost guarantee after reading this, you will be armed with a serious edge. An edge that will focus on a key aspect to living a vivacious, enriched life, being a mover & shaker, and to having ultimate success in business.

That edge is distinguishment. Separating yourself from others. Clearly displaying/showing/defining everything about who you are & what you stand for, or what your business is about - apart from everyone around you, in your industry, in the world.

This is not an easy task, as it requires quite a lot of ‘knowing thyself’ and having exceptional confidence to move boldly around with this uniqueness. And it requires enormous creativity both in thought, and in how you get your consistent message of You/Your Business to others. But this man shows it can be done.

So don’t just read this. As you read this, start to seriously challenge yourself by asking: “what could I do to leverage my distinction quickly?”

Really “Shake Things Up!” and aim for tomorrow, or perhaps this week or definitely within this month.

And just keep working on crafting your distinguishing elements in creative ways until it satisfies your perfection level. (Rounding it out, mine was 5 years & still going :)) And don’t forget to stay open-minded to allowing it to expand over time as you advance or mature or as your business grows, and as the years go on in the world.

Junior Sanchez started with his name. Junior stands for something but it’s not like any typical name which has an age old meaning behind it. It stands for what he does in his business. “Jointly Uniting.... (I’ll give him the honors of telling you the rest himself)

This alone is brilliant, and it’s quite powerful! His business is more than just his name, like my personal name and my company name, Jaxi West Companies. He is his business and his business is him. There is really no separation - he lives & breathes it. He believes so much in what he does and what he offers others, he unequivocally puts his name behind it - so far as he built his name around it!

He smokes me in unique ideation here! I would never have thought of this and I am actually a really big creator and user of acronyms - (as you experienced from the 1st “Shake Things Up!” Newsletter) because they are catchy and easy to remember (sans the U.S. Gov’t acronyms).

His company has 2 websites, one ‘official site’ and then a webs.com site. Not sure which came first or if he will ever drop one, but I decided to take a look at the second one (webs.com) out of curiousity.   “WOW” is what came out of my mouth twice and “‘oh, man, this guy’s genius” once, as I was clicking on the links on the site and the pages were opening.

This CEO did more than just brand his image with a fancy logo or tag line. He went 1000 steps beyond that. He sort of went about it like a musician who launches a music career.

He incorporated music and clothing into building his global image. He took two non traditional venues (as it would be viewed in the ‘corporate world’) and made this a part of his entire branding process. He should be my Spokesman for “Shake Things Up!”

Now, if I told you what this guy does, you’d be very surprised at how all this creativity came about from a company that really falls under HR. To me, that area is relatively mundane, HR in general. But, that is my personal perspective and not meant to pass judgement. I’d say the same thing about finance. But, I know HR is absolutely relevant and crucial to many companies, so I am not negating it.

What I am saying is - it would be one thing if this guy’s business was ice cream or bungee jumping, but it’s not. So it really impressed me how creative he got with all this.  

Like I stated above - I would tag his business as a ‘necessity of traditional business’. His business is essentially recruitment and placement. Those looking for a job and those who have jobs are the folks he interacts with daily.

So how does music and clothing come into this? Or why would he choose to do this? It’s not like the shirts are going to make him wealthy, and the music isn’t for sale (it’s actually a video).

So, I can only surmise the music and clothing is a way to capture the younger Generations. The other presumption I have -outside him just being brilliantly creative - is he is on a massive mission (you understand this once on the website).

For the industry he is in, and where we are in reality in the job market and economy (Absolute Truth #s: 18% unemployed /30 Million Americans without a job), I would say this is more like a Movement.

Movement’s are often accompanied by clothing, music, etc.- a way to spread your message to others, make it fun, grab attention, etc. But maybe none of this is his reasoning - this is all me just ‘knowledge guessing’. So I will leave it up to you to decide - or just pick up the insight and keep it in mind when you are thinking about that question I suggested earlier: “what can I do to establish or leverage my distinction immediately?”

So here’s where the music comes into play. On his webs.com site, the viewer is informed about his company in a video that has some pretty wild & unique music - but the music is 100% appropriate. I actually thought maybe he asked a band to write the lyrics for his company. That’s how much it meshes.

Another link he had on his webs.com site was ‘shop’ - I immediately clicked on it - thinking ‘what could he really sell?’ I instantly thought it was a book or something that was Infopreneurial (selling his knowledge), but I was wrong.

He sells t-shirts with his company name and different messages and pictures (depending which shirt) that you can purchase. Now at first one might think, who would wear something that is someone else’s business name? But think about it, you do it daily most likely, a Nike shirt, or music band’s shirt, so perhaps he thought: “why not Corporate America’?”

It took me a moment to think about why he would do this in the recruiting field, again, this isn’t like selling the new widget or even a nifty tech product like Apple does. But I then quickly realized he was willing to play a little because he is so confident in his business and himself, he believes his name can be as big as FedEx one day perhaps.

He thought big and he didn’t wait until he got big to do something about it. This was something that I learned very early on in my sales years thankfully: to think BIG and act BIG immediately - that day even - ‘as if’. As if you are Big! And the other golden rule is to always think global, not local. Even if you don’t think you will be - with the internet you now easily can be.

Okay, so up to now I have been painting a pretty mundane picture of his industry - recruiting and placement - again, probably from my own personal opinion on the field. Note: I was in this field for a brief stint when I lived in Southern Virginia, so I feel I can share my opinion openly, because I also fully acknowledge it’s importance.

But Mr. Sanchez didn’t just set up a typical recruiting and placement business. That again would have been too boring for this advanced thinker. He also didn’t declare a speciality on what industry or professional level he would work with, he works with everyone.

But what he did do, was create his niche in another way. He decided to work with prison programs - working with and placing ex-offenders.

He took on one hefty challenge - but it’s most likely because he believes everyone is entitled to 2nd chances. You really don’t get involved in the prison programs unless you are truly dedicated, as there aren’t many who do, so those that say they want to, are heavily counted on to come through and make a difference (no matter what aspect of a prison program you get involved in). So it’s about your word and your reputation.

He is also ideal to be the one to do this type of program. From going through his websites, you learn he believes in every individual and what each person could bring to a company. So, he incorporated his own personal belief right into this company (as I did with my previous company, BLC). This is what I call being Passion Driven, not Profit Driven. He carved a challenging niche - but one that everyone benefits from.

Society as a whole benefits from this fellow’s business and his dedication to fight for the underdog. The ex-prisoner isn’t falling into recidivism traps, and thus society is kept safer (no repeat crime) and he is helping this individual become a productive, contributing individual instead of one who was costing Americans their tax dollars to support him (in the prison).

So the work Junior is doing in his 2nd Chances Division could also be considered part of his corporate social contribution to his community, state, nation and even the world. This is a true win all around. I’d say this entrepreneur has thought of everything.  

Junior Sanchez is carving a path and leaving a spectacular trail...one towards success, leadership, creativity, and harnessing the uniqueness of each individual. I’d be keeping my eye on him, and following his footsteps, if I were you.

Remember, year after year it gets harder to stand out from the crowd, both in business -as more enter the workforce & it’s increasing competitiveness, and in life - as population grows over time & everyone is grabbing for everyone’s time or attention. If you aren’t thinking outside the box and stating boldly who you are, you are not doing justice to your own potential or natural gifts.

Be all of who you are, do what you love, do what you are exceptional at, and be humbly bold (there’s a fine art to this) letting others know about the awesomeness of you and what you can do for others!

If you follow this 4 point rule (my rule), you will always be remembered. Being remembered is the 2nd biggest key to success. The 1st is your own drive and determination. This CEO has mastered the 1st, and he accomplished the 2nd with me.

Junior Sanchez breaks rules! And that is what I am all about! So of course, I Love it! I hope this man inspires you, as he did with me, and puts some fire under you - to get you to “Shake Things Up!” in your world and craft your distinctions in who you are or what your business is about and share that message with the world!

My Fellow Americans,

I find myself quite concerned about the current state of affairs in our beloved nation. Our economic plunge has lead us into an immense depression and the unemployment rate continues to escalate day by day to heights we have never seen before. Knowing how desperate these times are as both an American and as CEO of RIFT SUCCESS, I feel it my duty to do something about this immediately. Our president states that it will take 300,000 jobs filled just to make a positive impact on the economy. 300,000 jobs to make a dent! Well, if that is the case then I am more than willing to do my part and feel that I need to up the ante. RIFT SUCCESS, Jaxi West Companies, and I have officially embarked on a mission. This mission is to place 360,000 Americans back into the workforce in 360 days! That’s 360,000 jobs in 360 days! This may be a monumental task, but I know that it will surely change the face of history and the course of our current situation. Am I crazy? Perhaps, but as an American, I cannot stand idle and watch without action as this continues to worsen. Build, Then Begin by Jaxi West

Recently, I learned some background information on one of my new colleague’s business.

The conversation came about as I mentioned to him I was very impressed that he had launched in May, and had achieved so much in such a short amount of time, including going international within the first 2 months.
Mr. Sanchez, CEO of Rift Success, then went on to inform that he actually spent a few years working to build relationships and he did quite a bit of work for free to establish himself and earn a solid reputation in his industry.

Simple & Brilliant.

If you know me by now - you know these are 2 of my favorite ways of conducting business and life These are some of the core’s I consult and coach around. So when I meet other savvy and creative thinkers like him, I like to share their genius with others.

Now brilliant is an adjective I use frequently with my new found colleauge and friend, Junior Sanchez, along with adding my own title to his position - CCO Chief Creative Officer - whether he actually ever honors himself with that title or not.

This strategy has obviously paid off quite well for Mr. Sanchez and his company, as he continues to grow month after month, and he has plenty more ideas for expansion over the years.

So my message for all - and especially Entrepreneurs - pay attention to this strategy: Build, Then Begin.
Build Relationships. Build your Reputation. Build your business before you open your doors. How do you do that? By taking work or projects for free - or maybe arrange a barter system or referral partnership. Build your testimonials. Build your personal name & build your company name. Build your brand image.
Just build more, so when you launch or open, business is already flowing. That is exceptional energy & a more solid momentum to ride on than opening or launching with nothing!

Building before you begin also helps if you are trying to get funding. You are showing the investor(s) you already have clients/customers, and you have a product or service that is in demand and people are flocking to you to fill their need.

Perhaps incorporate this strategy yourself or tweak it in a way that could work for you. And if you don’t want to do this, at least keep this in the back of your mind, as you are unfolding your business to the world. Beginning strategies are sometimes useful every now and again over the course of years, as you add different divisions to your business or if you are trying to enter into a new market space.

Now, this strategy isn’t for everyone, it’s only for the rare. It takes a true professional - one who is more passionate about his work & helping others than making money. One whose belief in himself and his business and what he offers (product/service) is unique and delivers results. One who is willing to put the hours of sweat equity in without receiving the equity in his hand.

The business world already holds some of these rare entrepreneurs and is swiftly moving more in this direction year after year, so you would not be alone if you gave this method a try. The only question is if you are willing to. The support is out there.

Who We Are

All of Us Or None is a national organizing initiative of prisoners, former prisoners and felons, to combat the many forms of discrimination that we face as the result of felony convictions. After serving time in torturous conditions, we were met at the gate with prejudice and discrimination that made our re-entry into society difficult and in some cases impossible. Many of us recognize that our prison sentence never ends as long as the discrimination against us continues.

Mission/Vision

Researchers built a wind tunnel for flies with scenes projected on the interior walls. The fly's motion is tracked with a 3D camera and the images change in response. By changing the patterns on the tunnel's walls, the scientists can control the untethered fly's movements. According to an article and video at New Scientist, understanding the complexities of insect flight could inform the development of new microrobotic aircraft. From New Scientist:

"This program defines how the world reacts to the fly's behavior," says Fry. "You gain access to information you just wouldn't get without the tools, because you can control a fly that is immersed in a virtual environment."

Many of us are way too busy to do our share to help the environment - or at least, that's how it feels much of the time. We'd like to join the fight against global warming, but who has the time? Helping the environment isn't just good for the earth... it's good for your pocketbook too. You can do it in small ways, at home and when you drive, and those ways will add up to major changes worldwide and big changes that you'll see in your budget. Continue reading for 10 tips on how to save money saving the planet.

1. CFLs. Replace regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), which are slightly more expensive but will last much longer and burn less energy when they're on. This is a small change but it adds up to big savings over time.

2. Energy-efficient appliances. There are many new energy-efficient water heaters, washers, dryers - any electrical appliance in your house, in fact. This can save tons on your power bill. Other alternatives: don't use hot water for everything, and dry your clothes using a clothes line.

3. Buy used if possible. Before buying something new, ask friends or relatives, look at garage sales or thrift shops, look on eBay or other similar sites where used stuff is sold. You're helping a product live longer, thus reducing the impact on the environment, and at the same time getting it much cheaper (and sometimes just like new).

4. Make your own coffee. If you buy coffee from a trendy coffee shop, this can save you tons every year. At $4 a pop, Starbucks (or similar) coffee can add up to nearly $1,500 a year if purchased once a day. Twice a day and you can double that figure. Making coffee at home costs only cents, and if you buy Fair Trade coffee, you're helping poor farmers and the environment. Buy in bulk to save more.

5. Eat in more. Instead of eating at fast food joints (which are horrible damagers of the environment) or expensive sit-down restaurants, save huge amounts of money by creating a simple menu, buying the groceries, and cooking at home. You can create very easy dinners in 15 minutes or less, and the cost will be a fraction of what it costs to eat out. You can avoid the excessive packaging of fast food (not to mention their ravaging of the rain forests) to help the environment.

6. Ride a bike, walk, carpool. Driving contributes to global warming and the depletion of our natural resources, not to mention pollution. So the less you drive, the better. Even if you only replace a few trips a week with a bike or walking or carpooling, you're doing your part to help stop global warming and save on gas money at the same time. Walk your kid to school, bike to the corner store, carpool or commute by bike to work.

7. Gas-saving driving. If you must drive, at least ensure that you're using less gas by doing so. Some common recommendations to do so: ease up on the gas pedal and brake pedal, be sure your tires are inflated and your engine is running smoothly, don't have your car on idle for too long, and get a fuel-efficient car.

8. Less waste. The excessive packaging of most products today, and the use of paper and plastic disposable products, is a huge contributor to the destruction of the environment. Look for products that use less packaging, or buy in bulk (or at co-ops where you bring your own containers), and use real plates and silverware instead of paper or plastic ones. Bring cloth grocery bags when you go shopping instead of using paper or plastic.

9. Insulation. Be sure your house is properly insulated to save on heating and cooling costs. Many people allow their house to lose a ton of energy a year by neglecting this important step.

10. Push mower. If you've got a relatively flat yard, and you keep your grass fairly short, today's motor less push mowers are easy to use and consume zero gas. They're not the old fashioned mowers of your grandpa's generation - they actually run very smoothly.

Hiring Managers use Social Media in Hiring Process

When looking for a new job, remember to utilize social media sites, especially LinkedIn. According to Jump Start Social Media, as many as 75% of hiring managers use LinkedIn on a regular basis to research candidates before making an offer, compared to 48% using FaceBook, and 26% using Twitter.

"Social media is not only a great networking tool, it's also a way for employers to perform reference checks on job candidates," said Veronica Fielding, president of Digital Brand Expressions and its social media service for consumers, Jump Start Social Media. "Because LinkedIn is the most professionally oriented of the three, it tends to attract hiring managers who are doing due diligence."

When it comes to sourcing job candidates, more hiring managers again prefer LinkedIn to Twitter and Facebook. Of the hiring managers surveyed, 66% of hiring managers visit LinkedIn, 23% visit Facebook and 16% use Twitter to find job candidates to fill openings.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Small businesses are still struggling to find financing, but for those seeking government-backed loans, the worst may be over. The Small Business Administration's flagship lending program backed 37% more loans in its latest quarter than it did a year ago, at the height of the financial crisis.

In the three months ended Dec. 31, the SBA's 7(a) lending program processed 12,393 loans totaling $3.8 billion, according to preliminary data released Monday by the agency. That's a sharp increase from the 9,070 loans, totaling $1.9 billion, processed in the year-earlier quarter.

The SBA credits the improvement to a slew of stimulus measures.

"The big takeaway that we have when we look at this is that we were successful in turning around the SBA lending," SBA spokesman Jonathan Swain said.

Still, lending remains far behind pre-recession benchmarks. Two years ago, in the last calendar quarter of 2007, the SBA backed more than 20,000 small business loans.

"While there are some indicators that the economy is moving in the right direction, no one would say we are out of the woods yet," Swain said.

A lagged recovery: SBA loans represent a tiny portion of the overall small business lending landscape, but they're an important barometer of banks' willingness to extend credit to startups and growing companies. The SBA program guarantees a portion of the money banks lend to qualifying businesses. If the borrower defaults, the government pays the bank back.

Credit conditions for large businesses have largely returned to normal after the dire credit crunch that followed Lehman Brothers' collapse in late 2008. But small businesses have not enjoyed the same recovery. Sales are down at most companies, and the value of assets typically used as collateral -- like real estate and goods in inventory -- has fallen. That leaves many banks reluctant to lend to borrowers they view as risky bets.

From April to October, the nation's largest banks shrunk their collective small business lending balance by 4.3%, cutting $11 billion in credit, according to the most recent Treasury Department data.

Stimulus help: In response to last year's credit crisis, the government lined up a slew of stimulus measures aimed at increasing lending through the SBA's programs.

February's Recovery Act set aside a $375 million funding pool to temporarily eliminate fees for a SBA loans and increase the portion of each loan that the government guarantees, up to 90%.

That move proved so popular that the money allocated for it ran out just before Thanksgiving. Banks and small businesses still clamoring for the stimulus incentives got in line in a Recovery Act Queue.

The queue had more than 1,000 loans pending approval when Congress appropriated another $125 million for the program just before Christmas. The SBA started approving loans off the queue late last month, and currently, the queue is wiped clean.

Another stimulus loan program, America's Recovery Capital, is still inching along, despite lender and borrower complaints that a burdensome application renders the program nearly useless. Last quarter, the SBA backed 2,206 ARC loans totaling $70.9 million.

The SBA plans to push for more funding to continue the stimulus measures. The House of Representatives passed a jobs bill late last year that includes another $354 million to fund an extension of waived fees and increased guarantees. The Senate will take up the bill when it returns from its winter recess.
