Flickr, Flick and Share

I’ve been a long-time Flickr user and fan ever since getting into Photography. It’s been more than 5-years since I’ve joined, and to this day, I still consider it (hands down) the best photo sharing site out there. It keeps it simple and just makes it easy for people to do what they want to do, share their photos with friends and family.

With the Holidays upon us, we are seeing loved ones that we don’t often see as distance is usually a factor. But one thing we do to recall and make those memories last are take photos and/or videos. I had my camera and just snapped away during our recent family gathering. I then uploaded the set/album to Flickr to share it.

One thing that is limiting is that not all of my relatives/friends/family are on Flickr. Even then, you are only limited to download on a per photo basis (at the moment?). As to find a solution to have my aunt download the entire set/album, as she wanted to get them printed at Costco, I dug around and fortunately found Flick and Share.

Sometimes you need to share a flickr set of one event (a wedding, a graduation or just that last friday party you had) and you want your friends to download all the pictures with just one click, we solve that. It’s like giving a pendrive with your photos!

The thing I like about the application is the efficient way to share a link that will allow friends and family to be able to download the set’s high-resolution photos. As soon as you click that “Start now!” button, you are faced with an authorization page from Flickr. Flick and Share only requires a “read” permission.¹ After allowing it, you are then forwarded to a page where you may pick which Flickr set you wish to share.

Selecting the set, Flick and Share does its magic and then forwards you to a page where you may further filter out what photos you would like to share. That is, per privacy-permission. You may have some photos marked Family-only, Family-and-Friends-only, completely Private, or by default, Public. By default, all photos regardless of privacy-permission are available for download.

After this process, clicking on the “Get your sharing link!” button will land you on a page where you may copy the share-link.

That’s all there is to it for you to get your family & friends to be able to download the set. You’ll just need to send them the link (via IM, Twitter, e-mail, etc.). You’ll see that some social-media sharing is available on the same page for you to utilize.

Last but not least, when they have received the link and open it on a browser, they will have the option to download the photo set either by:

Java applet,
DownloadThemAll! Firefox add-on,
wget/curl,
One of the thousand download managers,²
and by hand using “Save As…”

Frontend UI/View Map

Years ago, I was learning about Tiles & Struts as we were transitioning to it from a very old system (Vignette). We got to tweak stuff, as well as create from the ground up. With this project, I recall using Blueprint CSS for the first time in a production stage. But that’s for another story, for another time.

Meanwhile, to help with the conversion, I needed something visual to help the other developers in our team know why I have made it like this and what I’m thinking in terms of what “view” we want to be spat out by the backend. And so, the diagrams & illustrations below came about.

Please do note that it is 2011 now and the HTML structure described in the document is more geared towards early 2000s’ frontend development. I’m just putting this out there as a reference for myself, and those that think they can use something like it for their projects, and/or workflow.

Other than the many IA evangelist of the early y2k-period, thanks goes out to Nick Finck for providing a good resource page, Visio Stencils for Information Architects. It provided a good base of visual elements to help with the project’s deliverables such as the one linked here. Those stencils are still useful.

Reiterating User Experience

Andy Gilmore’s Kaleidoscope

Unique. Colorful. Patterns. Wonderful.

Just some words that can be used to describe his visuals. But that’s the thing, those are just “some words.” You’ll have to see for yourself and feel what you may feel personally from them.

A master of color and geometric composition, Andy Gilmore’s work is often characterized as kaleidoscopic and hypnotic, though it could just as well be described as visually acoustic, his often complex arrangements referencing the scales and melodies in music.

Gilmore’s journey toward this masterful style followed a long and winding road. He characterizes his pursuit of education as a tangled web, noting the bookstores, bakeries, and theaters where he worked were of more importance than the schools he attended in pursuit of his BFA, which he received from SUNY Empire State College.

After finishing school, Gilmore relocated to San Clemente, California, where he took up work for FourStar Distribution, resizing print ads for C1RCA Footwear and Forum Snowboards. It would serve as his introduction to the computer and lay the foundation for a career in digital art and design.

Andy Gilmore’s extensive list of clients includes Wired Magazine, The New York Times, Fast Company, Wallpaper*, Warp Records, and yes, Ghostly International. He currently lives and works in Rochester, New York.

Of Hamsters, and Blake Griffin?

It’s not news to most that KIA has been producing awesome car commercials for the past couple of years now. They have been boosting up their marketing dollars with creativity and humor; and they have the increase in sale numbers to prove it. Whether the star of the show are characters from Yo Gabba Gabba, hamsters, or a basketball star on the rise—Blake Griffin.

Dope right? They get you intrigued by multiple stimuli: sight and sound. Not only that, but they make you think who are these cartoon looking characters; why are these hamsters bigger than the car; and wow–how they can shuffle?!

Meanwhile, it’s been almost a year since the latest Slam Dunk competition hoisted Blake Griffin as its champion. What did he do? You might ask. Well, he dunked over a KIA Optima. Yah—I know, I would’ve thought it would be a Honda or Toyota, but a KIA? In the NBA Slam Dunk competition?

Anyways, it was a crazy dunk. He could have cleared a bigger size chassis for sure.

But that’s not all of it. Recently KIA aired their new campaigns featuring Blake Griffin in humor-filled spots. I say it’s great timing with all these NBA news circulating trades and rumors this past week.

Givers

I haven’t heard this kind of Music in a while. Something that just took me in the first 15-seconds of listening to get more songs of, when the currently playing song wasn’t even finished yet. This was 3 o’clock early in the morning mind you.

Givers is an indie pop group from Lafayette, Louisiana. The band is made up of vocalist and percussionist Tiffany Lamson, vocalist and guitarist Taylor Guarisco, drummer and vocalist Kirby Campbell, bassist and guitarist Josh LeBlanc, and flautist, saxophonist, and keyboardist Nick Stephan.

The first time I heard of their glorious sound was through Spotify. I was just tuned in to a on-your-radar playlist per se; about 50 songs that are the bees knees. Then this gem played, “Up Up Up”. I was hooked. It just sounded so full, up-beat, and made a riot of good emotions rush through.

After finding that Spotify has their debut album, “In Light”, I went through it a couple of times and continued to keep working. I enjoyed it so much that I didn’t notice it was 5AM by the time I looked at the clock.

I’ve been following Grzegorz Domaradzki’s work for a while. His illustrations just have a hint of clean sketchiness in them (in terms of those lines) that I’ve grown to love. Not only that, he also shows a breakdown of his workflow which definitely adds more of an interesting twist of how calculating his thought process could be foreseen; only to produce more respect at the works’ quality and uniqueness.
