Flubber!

Today we did a hands-on activity in Science to learn about chemical changes of matter. We made our own flubber! The students enjoyed this activity so much that many of them asked if they could do it at home. I promised I'd put the recipe up on the website in case you wanted to give it a try! Here it is:

Flubber
1 Tbsp. white glue (regular Elmer's)
1Tbsp. water
1 drop food coloring
1 Tbsp. Borax solution (use 2 tsp. of powdered Borax and 1 tsp. of water)
Measure the glue and pout into a cup. Measure water and stir in. Add food coloring and stir. Measure and stir in borax solution.

Science test for Chapter 10

Our unit test in Science is currently planned for Wednesday, March 6. You will be receiving a study guide on Thursday of this week so that you have plenty of time to review the concepts with your child to help them prepare. You will notice that the study guide format looks different. The third grade teachers are encouraging the students to be more active participants in their studying. Rather than just feed them the information, we would like them to have to seek it out themselves as we feel this will make their studying more meaningful. They will be expected to complete the sheet for homework, using their textbook and any other resources in their Science folder to find the correct answers. We will go over the answers and correct our study sheets in class on Friday so that everyone has accurate information to study from. They will be sent home before the break so that you have plenty of time to prepare with your student. Should they happen to lose their study guide for any reason, another copy will be sent home at your request. Any questions? As always, feel free to contact me at any time! We will be having our weekly Math test on Thursday this week. Also, on Friday we will be having a Science quiz to review what we have learned thus far about matter and changes in state/phase. This is the last week of PARP and your final treasure chest logs for your PARP minutes are due this Friday! Keep up the great reading!

Multiplication Fact Practice

In math we have been working on multiplication. Your child will need to memorize the multiplication facts for 0-12. The best way to do this is to study flashcards as much as possible, at least a few times each week. We will also be beginning division shortly. It would be a good idea for your child to start studying division flashcards as well. It is very important for your child to memorize the facts. The ability to automatically recall facts without having to “figure it out” each time is a positive habit that will help them to work more quickly and accurately on assessments, build their math confidence, and help them in their lives in the future! If you haven’t done so already, you can purchase flashcards in the educational section of most dollar stores or Staples. The Dollar Tree usually has them. If you are unable to purchase them, you can make them using index cards or small pieces of paper.

This week we will be having our Math Benchmark on Wednesday. Please review any concepts that you notice your child is still struggling with in the nightly homework! We will be having our PARP kickoff assembly on Tuesday morning. Remember to read with your child each night and log your minutes! There are also bonus activities on the calendar which will count towards raffle drawings. PARP is a fun way to spend time with your child and enhance their literary experience. The holidays are almost here and we are getting excited in Class 3-4! We do not have any tests other than our weekly spelling test this week. We will be having our class party for the kids on Friday. Please remember to send in a wrapped, age-appropriate book that is not gender specific if you would like your child to participate in our holiday gift swap at the party. We will be having our Science unit test on Friday this week covering Chapter 6. Please use the study guide to help your child prepare. We will also be having a Math test on Friday. This week the students will be dismissed half day on Thursday and Friday. Report cards will be sent home on Wednesday. Social Studies unit

This week we will be starting our new unit in Social Studies on government. I will be sending home the study guide for the test this week so that you can be aware of what we will be focusing on and important concepts to review with your child throughout the unit. I will also be posting the review guide on the website and will let you know when it is available. I will let you know when the test is scheduled and will send home another copy of the study guide at that point as well. I just want to let you know in advance what material we will be covering in the classroom so that we can work together to reinforce these concepts.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving weekend. We will be having a Math test this week on Tuesday. The first trimester marking period will be ending this week. As report cards are approaching, there will be two half days coming up in mid-December. I know I have met with pretty much everyone regarding your child's progress in our class. If you feel the need for another meeting to touch base again or if you have any concerns that you would like to discuss, please let me know as meetings on those days will only be scheduled on an "as needed" basis. As always, I am happy to schedule meeting times at any time that you would like to come in!

We will be having a Math test on Wednesday. Thanks for working so hard with your child to prepare for the Science test last week. They all did extremely well! The Scholastic book order that was due on Thursday is being extended until Wednesday of this week. If you would like to place an order, please send it in by then. This week we will be having our Science unit test on Thursday. A review guide was sent home last week to help you study with your child. We will be beginning our Social Studies unit on Government next week. I plan to post the review guide on the website so that you can continue to go over the important concepts at home well in advance of the test. I will let you know when it is up. Don't forget, there is no school on Friday for Veterans Day. The weekly spelling test will be on Thursday....there will be no practice test this week! Since it is a short week, the students will only be completing three of the four reading responses on their weekly reading logs. There will be no homework on Thursday night, but if they choose to complete the two Math sheets from Lesson 43 and bring them in on Monday, they will earn a ticket.

This week we will be preparing for our Social Studies geography unit test on map skills and features. We will be taking this on Thursday. The study guide has been sent home to help prepare. There will also be a quiz on Tuesday. Please use previous quizzes to study as well. We will be having a Science quiz on Wednesday on landforms. The students will be bringing home the flip-books they have made to help them study. The Science test will be next week. There will be a study guide going home towards the end of this week. School will be closed on Monday, Oct. 10 for Columbus Day. On Tuesday, we will be having a Math Assessment. On Wednesday, it will be Picture Day! Social Studies quiz

Please remember to complete the forms that were in your folder and to send them back in with your student at your earliest convenience. This will help me to get to know them as a learner more quickly. Also, I will be getting out a schedule for individual conferences very soon.
