Hello there, readers!

I have a confession. I'm a bit addicted to planners. I have mentioned this before. I have even done blog posts on creating my own planner.

Thankfully, I have discovered a couple of great planners that work for me. I use a Passion Planner for school. I use a MAMBI Happy Planner for home and as a memory book. You can see how I use them on my Instagram page (along with cute pictures of my girls and my dog).

Earlier this year, I bought myself a Silhouette Portrait cutting machine. My sole purpose of buying one was to create my own stickers for my planner. While I love the Etsy Shops I use for stickers, owned by ladies who have become real-life friends, I was spending way too much money on them! I am all for supporting small businesses, but I had a problem.

So here is one of my sticker sets I've made. I've made a couple others with different themes, including Care Bears, but this one was a hit when I shared it with planner groups online.

I have created this as a free download. It is for personal use only. If you would like to share it with your friends, please send them to my blog so they can download it themselves. They are designed for The Happy Planner, so they are a little taller than Erin Condren boxes. One user trimmed the To-Do boxes and turned the extra piece into a flag. The possibilities are endless.

Here is how it looks in my planner. I goofed and forgot the headers above the full boxes. Thankfully, I had Christmas Washi to fix the mistake. I am off work the week of Christmas, anyway, so I don't foresee a large amount of things scheduled.

Whirlwind Year

I can't believe it's been almost a year since my last post. This year has flown by, and it's been insane.

Summer 2015 started with Big Sis leaving to go live with her dad. She started her freshman year without me, but seemed to have fun and she made some new friends and got to enjoy living in the Bay Area.

School started in August 2015 with Little Sis starting middle school as a 6th grader. I continued to work at her school (previously Big Sis' school) as an instructional aide. I also went back to school to finish my Associates in Social and Behavioral Science. My goal is to transfer to CSU San Marcos for my bachelor's and my teaching credential.

The school year flew by, and the next thing I knew, Big Sis was set to move back home. The deal was that she would spend the whole year up there, but she had to keep her grades up. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to keep her Biology grade up to standard - she never has been good at the hard sciences.

On my trip to pick her up, I met up with a friend and we both decided it was time to start eating better and getting active. On June 29, I officially started my weight loss journey. I've been tracking my food consistently since then (well, technically, since before then), and in the process, I have lost 16 pounds.

In August, I decided to get my body fat measured and received some tips on how to manage my macros - protein, fat, and carbohydrates. I am still working on how to fit in the foods I like to eat into my numbers, but I am getting there.

I am hoping to use this blog now as a way to focus my efforts, share and receive some helpful tips, and keep a running record of my progress.

Teens, Bullying, and Girl Meets World

Girl Meets World tonight focused on the topic of bullying. Bullying is talked about so much these days, that any little slight against a student is labeled "bullying." However, bullying is so much more than children picking on each other, as children tend to do (I'm not condoning this, and I'll come back to it).

Bullying is the use of power over another person; repeated actions that cause another person to feel inferior or weak. In the words of Cory Matthews, "A bully isn't someone who says something you don't like. A bully is someone who uses power and intimidation to hurt others."

My 10 year old and I watched "Girl Meets Rileytown" tonight. She kept asking, "Who is Riley's bully?" and when Riley finally confronted her bully, with the whole school behind her, Little Sis was upset we didn't learn who the bully was.

I explained that Riley's bully didn't have a face because bullies all look different. Each one has their own face, and each person who is bullied needed to be able to see their own bully there, being confronted by Riley.

Sadly, a bully is usually the victim of their own bully, someone who doesn't lift them up, who seeks to belittle them, so they feel they have to do the same to someone else to feel good about themselves. I've seen it many times, from little preschoolers to high schoolers. Honestly, a bully doesn't necessarily need someone to stand up TO them - they need someone to stand up FOR them.

So while we're talking about students who are bullied, let's not forget the ones who are hurting so much that they feel the need to hurt someone else. This behavior is learned. Punishing a bully does nothing but continue to perpetuate the situation. Their victim stands up to them? They'll find someone else until their own hurt is addressed.

Again, I'm not saying bullying is acceptable. I totally agree that we need to stop all forms of bullying. Not only do we need to encourage our children to stand up for the victim, but we need to teach them how to be a friend to those who may not be the most likable person on campus. We need to teach our children to be positive toward everyone, set the example on how friends are supposed to act. It will take time, but it can be done. Behavior modification is hard work, but if everyone is involved, it is well worth the time.

As far as children picking on others, this is where adults need to step up their game. I hear so many parents using "endearing" terms toward their kids that, if said to an adult, would get them punched in the face. Why are we teaching our children that it's ok to call people names by using these words toward them? If we hear children calling other kids ANY name that is not positive or uplifting, we need to give them the vocabulary and have them try it again. They may not KNOW how to "play nice." They may not know HOW to be a friend. WE have to teach them, even at 11, 12, and 13 years old. Trust me, I know. There is no "kids being kids" ... we need to change it to "humans being humans" and set the example for them - even if they're not your children.

So come on, adults! Let's be loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, gentle, kind, and show self-control. Life is going to throw us curve balls, but let's show the kids the right way to handle it! If we're going to make lemonade from those lemons, we're going to need a little sweetener!

It's that time of year again!! Time to raise money for Children's Hospital Orange County!

I've been doing this for several years, and I have to say, it's a lot of fun. Last year, I think it was around $2 million raised!

Passion Planner - Week Three

Another week gone. Second week of work and first week of college done. I cannot express how much my Passion Planner is helping me stay on track with what I have to do and keep track of what I have done.

Here is my planner at the beginning of the week. I had received an email telling me that my attendance was required at a training Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. With a little clarification on my job title, it was determined that I didn't have to be there. I also dropped my Wednesday night class and moved my Tuesday/Thursday class from 4pm to 6pm. That kind of made me a little uncomfortable, since I had highlighted the entire semester through December.

What was I going to do??

To start with, I covered Wednesday night with the cutest sticker I could find. Pandas are my favorite.

Then, I had to fix Thursday. Not sure how this is going to work, but this week, I did some extra studying, so covering it with green helped. I did the same thing for next week, too. In a few of the following weeks, I just used correction tape. It doesn't look pretty, but I'm sure I'll come up with some other way to make it look less like the train wreck I think it is (it really isn't, but if you know me at all, you know I am kind of a perfectionist).

A note on my study time. I plan it only by time. When I'm done studying, I write in what I did. This will help me keep track of my time and keep my accountable. If I didn't finish an assignment, then I can go back and check what I did instead. If you see on my to-do list on the bottom left page, I have written down what is do in the first part of next week (for my Monday and Tuesday classes). On next week's to-do list, I start with what is due Thursday, then add in Monday and Tuesday for the following week. I had to have it all written down ahead of time, because about mid-semester, I'll forget to look at a syllabus and forget that I had anything due.

Now, for my pretty girl. She started high school on Wednesday at her dad's house. She called that night and told me how great it was. She ended up in an AVID class and is the only 9th grader who has been in it for three years. I guess they don't offer it in middle school up there.

She seems to be having a good time. I can't believe she's already in high school. Wasn't she just starting kindergarten?

Week Two with Passion Planner - Back to School Update!

This week marked my second with the Passion Planner, and my first of the new school year. Little Sis started 6th grade and we both cried a little bit on our way there because Big Sis was missing out on the milestone (and we will be missing out on hers when she starts high school next Wednesday).

Let's start with the obligatory "First-Day-Of-School" picture.

This week in my Passion Planner isn't as cute and fun as last week. Basically, it's because I didn't have as much fun! I went back to work last week on Thursday, but Monday was the first day back with my regular schedule. Here's the fun part: Little Sis starts at 7:47 with a Zero-Period. I don't start until 9:25, so what do I do in that extra hour and almost 45 minutes? Well, this week, I worked! I can't seem to stay away from my awesome coworkers, and I enjoy doing the tech-stuff like typing up student schedules into a spreadsheet for easy sorting to see where they are. You can see where I wrote in the extra time I spent at work. I am keeping track not to seek compensation, but to keep track of my own time. In the afternoons, I am off at 2:55, but school doesn't get out until 3:32. By then, I would have to fight after-school traffic, so I wait until about 3:45 or 4:00 to leave. It's been really hot this week, so I don't want to sit in my car with the A/C on while waiting to exit the parking lot.

I really do like that my Post-Its fit in the bottom section. I didn't want to write those lists directly into the notes section for two reasons: one, I might have wanted to do some drawing or doodling in that section; and two, I had planned to move the list to next week and just repeat the menus. (Because it's so messy looking, I won't be doing that!) I think it's funny that I made Buffalo Chicken that night, because according to TimeHop, I made it exactly two years previously on the first day of school in 2013. You can see that post (and recipe) here. It's still a hit -- there were not enough for both leftovers for my lunch AND seconds.

My weekends aren't generally planned with a schedule, but my to-do lists can get pretty long. I like that I can write them in on those sections. I saw this on Passion Planner's Instagram as part of their Planner Crush Wednesdays. They have some great ideas that can be used with any planner, but work especially well with the Passion Planner.

Next week starts my college courses. I am taking three classes over four nights. I've already printed up the two available syllabuses, as well as other important information I may need. I have planned to keep a separate planner specifically for my college classes, since I'll be able to put more information, but I'm trying to figure out how I can use my Passion Planner. I think small square Post-Its might be the answer. I also bought some cute stickers and washi tape today. I will definitely update next week!

Week One with Passion Planner

I received my brand new, academic-year Passion Planner on July 31. I was so excited! I usually use a calendar year planner, but since I work for a school district and am going back to college, I figured an academic planner would be a better fit.

I started by labeling the months. It just worked out that first semester (for both work and college) is red, second semester is yellow, and summer (June and July) is blue. I went through and added in the college's dates and deadlines as well as my work's (and Little Sis' school's) schedule.

Most of the time, I use the black Signo Gel pen or the PaperMate pencil.

Here's the end of July. I added in the events from my previous planner. I scheduled in time for events, but at the end of each day, I went in and added events that happened that day. My planner is also color-coded:

General appointments - yellow

Work - orange

School (College) - pink

Study Time - green

Personal - red

Little Sis - blue

Budget/Finances - light green

I saw this quote on Instagram from Toby Mac. It was a perfect fit for the Passion Planner!

Here is this week. Yeah, I just said I'm not big on drawing. These don't count. I looked at pictures while I drew them. I really love the layout of the Passion Planner. I didn't have a whole lot of things planned this week, except work on Thursday and Friday (when we officially went back to work for the school year). But when we did some spontaneous stuff, I added them in so I could remember them. Wednesday was a throw-away day. I stayed home and did nothing but watch TV.

Since Saturday is a day with nothing planned, I made my to-do list in Bullet Journal style. I just realized that I've already planned my lunches for next week (decided what dinners to make and I'll just take left overs for the first few days). I need to do some major grocery shopping, though.

You may have noticed that when I mentioned my color-coding, I failed to mention Big Sis. The big news on that is that she actually went to go live with her dad over the summer. It's still a sore spot with me. In fact, I'm tearing up just writing about this. But I had to let her go. If I had resisted and refused, things would have been bad here. I'm hoping she'll come to her senses at some point and come home. She seems to be happy. She'll start high school (don't even get me started on the fact that I'm missing her FIRST DAY OF HIGH SCHOOL!!) on August 19. I really hope she'll send me pictures.

Oak Glen - December 27, 2014

Yesterday, we went to Oak Glen. The plan was to visit the Oak Glen Old School Museum, which was scheduled to be open from 12pm - 4pm. We got there at about 10am.

Little Sis played at the playground for a little bit, and then we decided to take a drive. We went to Oak Tree Village, where they had an animal museum, train and pony rides, and homey exhibitors with hand made items. There was also a little stand that sold mini donuts and hot apple cider. The donuts were amazing and the cider was dee-lish-us.

After the Village, we continued our drive and stopped at Los Rios Rancho, a cute little shop with apples and apple butter and pumpkin butter and all kinds of other goodies. I bought a bag of Granny Smith Apples, and sampled just about everything else.

The journey ended when we went back to the Old School Museum, hoping for it to be open. It wasn't. So Little Sis got to play at the playground again. There is a giant wooden seesaw, a play structure, and a rock wall (on which she got stuck - twice). There are restrooms there as well, but they were locked. Perhaps they are open if the museum is open. The playground was clean, too. No trash or graffiti. There are also picnic tables, which would be a great way to spend a few hours when the weather is warmer.

I am hoping to write more about our Southern California travels.

Planner Storage and Organization

So I haven't posted an entry for a while. And it's funny how the last one I posted was about my planner.

I gave up on it after about 3 weeks. The binder, while adorable, was just not big enough to hold everything I needed. Calendar, journal, food diary, and scrapbook all in one? Yeah, that wasn't going to happen.

So I've spent the last 6 months looking for a solution. I think I finally found it. I had this adorable Orla Kiely cosmetics bag I got from Target. I was using it as a carrying case for my scrapbook/interactive notebook stuff that I was taking back and forth to work. Well, it now has a new purpose.

On one side, I have a pair of reader glasses as well as my 4 books - food journal and 2015 calendar from MayBooks, a Picadilly journal (I have 4 of these. The current is labeled "January" and will be my daily thought journal, which I sometimes use when I'm waiting in the pick up line at Little Sis' school.), and a Paris journal that I had transformed into a calendar, but will now use it for a Smash Book type journal.

On the other side are two containers - one with pens and one with Mr. Sketch Scented Stix - as well as two Elmer's Dot Runners to use in the scrap/smash journal.

In the center pouch, I have scissors and Smash Sticks, which have a glue stick on one end and a fine pen on the other. I also have a pen and a pencil. In the zip pouch on the other side are Post-Its and various other sticky notes.

What I love about this set up is that I can take it all with me and leave it in the car. I can't stand to have my purse weighted down with extra books or pens, and trying to keep it organized in my purse is a headache. I also can just take my calendar in a meeting. I haven't usually had to deal with meetings at work, but I'm part of the school's Action Team Partnership, so we have monthly meetings and events I have to keep track of. I keep everything on my Google Calendar, but I transfer to my paper planner so I have a snapshot of the entire month. I'm a little hyper-organized that way.

I think I may have reached a settling point with everything. Having separate books will allow me to keep everything separate. Of course, this is all subject to change should I get a wild hair or new supplies.

June Calendar. Washi tape marks special events. In June, it was Royal Family. Different colors mark school holidays and minimum days, too. (See the stars?)

A glimpse of October. Elementary students have minimum days for parent/teacher conferences. My last year of elementary school!!

A glimpse of December. Winter Break marked with different color, and Middle and High Schools have the Friday before Winter Break off.

Weekly calendar. What a week might look like if events need more information.

Other weeks are blank. If I need to add in something specific, I can. If not, I have a place to write highlights of the day, or put memorabilia in (like a Smash Book) or even journal or draw if I'm feeling artsy.

Second section is also blank paper for lists, journals, notes, etc.

Pockets. I added washi tape to the pocket to brighten it up a bit.

I haven't decided what to use this pocket for. Maybe just miscellaneous stuff.

This is a Target find. It sticks to the inside of the notebook/binder and gives you Post-Its and flags. So awesome. I may pick up some more for when I go back to work!

I am loving that my planner is fully customizable. I can add my own papers in as needed, and there are three more dividers I can use to mark other sections I may need as the kids go back to school and I go back to work.

My Planner Addiction

Hi. My name is Jaime, and I'm addicted... to day planners.

You might remember my post from December where I made my own day planner in a notebook that was given to me for my birthday. It was awesome. But it just wasn't what I needed for my sometimes hectic/sometimes mellow schedule. Some days I will sit and journal several pages at a time - Inspirational quotes or verses from the Bible - and sometimes I'll go weeks without journaling anything. Some days I have a LOT of things to do - extensive to-do list, appointments, or just ramblings I need to remember. The small spaces for the days just wasn't big enough for these days.

So we're 6 months into 2014, and I've already been through 2 planners. I just can't seem to find one that is, well, PERFECT. So I'm on a mission.

Thanks to Pinterest, I have about 200 ideas for a personalized planner. Last year, someone brought in a box of brand new Martha Stewart 8.5x5.5" Three-Ring Binder that was donated to the staff at my school. I've been contemplating what to do with it, and I think I've found out. I went to Office Max and purchased tabbed, monthly calendar for the rest of 2014 (they didn't have 2015 yet; not even the academic year calendars). Then I purchased some colored 32lb cardstock and asked them to cut it in half. I also purchased some folder pockets that will fit in the binder.

I have yet to assemble everything, and I'm still working out exactly HOW I will make everything work, but I'm very excited. I still need to get some dividers (hitting Target tomorrow, as I know they have the Avery products for this size binders), which I will decorate with Washi tape (clearance at Office Max - 4 rolls for $2.91).

I really need a place where I can journal at a moment's notice, without having to carry around a separate journal. I also need a place where I can put in more information for specific days when I have a lot to do, but don't need something for every single day of the year. I also want a place where I can list books I've read (since not all are on my Kindle) and where I can list books I WANT to read.

I will definitely share when I get everything put together. Here's a sneak peek at what I have so far:

Headin' for the Royal Family Kids Camp!

Headin' for a lot of fun!

I can't believe it's here already. My 6th year as a counselor for Royal Family Kids. It seems like this year snuck up on me, but I am ready. I have everything packed and even cleaned out the car.

For those new to my blog, Royal Family Kids is a week-long camp for abused and neglected foster kids. The idea is that we create lasting, positive memories for hurting children. We strive to give them the time of their lives through traditional camp activities, but also through showing them that a loving God will never leave them nor forsake them; that even in their darkest times, He is there, and He will use it for good.

After 5 years, I'm still a nervous wreck. I always pray that God will use me in ways I never dreamed imaginable. To be a light in a tiny life. To be an encourager, a role model, and the funnest adult my campers will ever meet. And working in a Middle School, sometimes those things disappear.

My dear readers, I have a request for you. Starting now, and through June 13, will you pray for me? Pray for my cabin mates (Freida, Kirstie, Viviana, and Jessi). Pray for the 5 campers we'll be sharing our week with. Pray for the other 37+ campers who will be on campus with us. Pray for the rest of the counselors and staff. Pray for the director, who has had a really rough year. Pray for the campgrounds. Pray for the families of the campers - both biological and foster. Our biggest need this week is prayer.

I won't be able to share pictures of our time at camp, since, for the safety and security of our campers we can't have our phones or cameras. But I will share the pictures I have of our flag, since the campers' names are not on it yet.

Tonight marked the first ever Stadium Series NHL game in Southern California. The Los Angeles Kings hosted the Anaheim Ducks at Dodger Stadium.

A couple friends informed me there was a watch party at Honda Center, so I drove up to join them. It was pretty fun. I got in some practice cheering for the Ducks, since I will be seeing them take on the Dallas Stars on February 1.

We had to stand for the first period, but we ended up with a table. We ordered wings and garlic fries and watched the Ducks shut out the Kings.

Little Sis had a sick day today. She had a severe upset tummy last night, and I didn't want to send her in today.

Thankfully, she is all better now. She was able to keep chicken noodle soup, Gatorade and toast down.

I was able to enjoy a quiet morning while she slept after Big Sis left for school.

Today's picture was inspired by a friend of mine. He sent me a picture of chicken he had made for his lunches at work. So I asked for the recipe and made some when I got home.

Chicken breast

Salt and pepper

Garlic and onion powders

Dijon mustard

I put it in my grill skillet, covered with seasonings and mustard, and cooked until 160 degrees. Easy peasy.

Sliced up and put on a bed of rice and broccoli. Then I put them in Easy Lunchbox containers.

I take no credit for this amazing and delicious idea. :)

Today, Little Sis and I went on a San Diego adventure!

First, we went to San Diego de Acala Mission.

Then, we went to the San Diego Zoo. We have a membership that expires next month. First, we had a picnic lunch in EasyLunchbox Containers.

Finally, we went to Coronado Beach. It was absolutly beautiful today.

Back to work and school tomorrow!
