Help Save Starving Animals Earlier this year we sent out an urgent appeal asking you for your help to save SanWild’s animals from starvation. To read the full appeal kindly please visit our main website at www.sanwild.org Go to the How you can Help page to find Special Appeals / Drought Appeal.Since December 2007, SanWild has had no rain and since the inception of the Trust in 2000, it is the worst year ever for our rescued animals.Initially many animals started dying as a result of the prolonged drought. Mortalities occurred in a variety of species including zebra, blue wildebeest, impala, kudu and warthog. However with the help of a number of our private donors, Opticon Pty Ltd and Unitfrutti in South Africa and the SPA (Société Protectrice Des Animaux) in France we managed to turn the tide of imminent death for many of SanWild’s animals. One simply cannot explain the feeling of joy of seeing animals return slowly but surely from death’s door. The poor physical condition of many of the animals, especially the kudu and warthogs slowly improved week after week as game pellets were put out at various points to supply additional feeding for the animals. To date they are still alive and are continuing their daily struggle for survival with your and our help. However as our attempts to assist starving animals increased and more and more feeding points were created out of necessity, the number of starving animals increased and the species diversified. This in effect also meant that the number of game pellet bags put out every day increased drastically. In return our expenses to purchase the bags of game pellets increased sharply. Baboons, vervet monkeys, elephants, rhinos, red hartebeest, eland, bushbuck, mountain reedbuck, nyala, common duiker and others now visit the feeding points daily. How does one only allow only a certain animal species to feed when other species too are in a struggle for survival? At SanWild we have to allow all animal species struggling to survive the opportunity to live.As the drought continues to hold SanWild in its deathly grip, we urgently need to appeal for your compassionate financial assistance again. The normal rain season for our area will resume again from the end of October and once the 1st good rains had fallen the natural conditions will change drastically within a period of 14 days when sufficient natural food should be available to once again sustain SanWild’s animals. However no definite time frame can be put on when we will receive our 1st good rains, but taking into account statistics over the years, we should receive rains by no later than the 1st week in December 2008.This means that we need to take urgent action to raise at least $5000.00 that will be sufficient funding to purchase enough food to continue to feed the starving animals until the rains come. In anticipation of being successful to find enough donors’ funding or income from our private Savannah Bush Camp, we have placed an order for another truck load of game pellets to be delivered by the 10th November 2008.We therefore would like to urgently appeal for your continued support and financial assistance to ensure that animals that have come to depend on supplement feeding to cling to life, can continue to rely on our support until the rains had fallen and nature produces enough food to once again help them build up their strength and physical condition. Without this help, their physical condition will again deteriorate to the point where they will die. This will be so tragic bearing in mind how hard they have fought to cling to life; the hardships they had to endure and are still enduring; when life is so close by.

When it is a matter of weeks to when nature will once again be kind to her wild children.Although the supplement feeding at the various points have saved animals from dying, it has simply not been sufficient to allow the animals to grow healthy and strong again; it is merely enough to keep them at a level where they can cling to life and we need your support as a matter of great urgency. The animals simply cannot get by at this crucial stage without the continued support and supplement feeding until the rains had fallen.

We would therefore greatly appreciate all donations, no matter how big or small. All help will be greatly appreciated.Direct donations can be made into our trust account at:ABSA, Danie Joubert Street, Tzaneen. Account number 9111221180, Branch Code 334349 For international transfers: Swift Code: ABSAZAJJ, IBAN Code ZA632005On-line donations can be made from the 3rd November 2008 via a secure payment gateway on our brand new interactive website at www.sanwild.com .
