CDW are one of the US’ leading providers of technology and infrastructure to businesses of all sizes. So when they share their latest survey data on tablets – and iPad – adoption in the enterprise with me, I’m interested right away.

And their latest data offers further evidence of the iPad’s growing momentum in the enterprise arena. Here’s some of their findings from the latest CDW IT Monitor:

Nearly six in 10 IT decision-makers reported tablet computer use in their organization, with 61% of those choosing Apple’s iOS over other mobile operating systems.

85% of IT decision-makers see implementing tablets as an opportunity to increase productivity.

Of those who have not incorporated tablets, 31% are planning to employ them within their organization in the next six months. If this figure holds, it would mean tablet use in more than 70% of businesses by October.

The only surprise in those numbers is the 61% figure for the iPad in terms of tablets in use. Although that’s clearly the majority, it still seems a low number, given the near non-existent competition there’s been for the iPad so far.

It’s time for another post in our What’s on Your iPad series. I’m glad to see that some of you are enjoying these posts as much as I am. I find them a great source for discovering interesting new apps and thoughts on how to organize apps on the iPad.

This week Joshua Schnell is providing answers. Joshua is the Editor In Chief at one of my favorite Mac sites – macgasm.net. I’ve known Joshua for a few years now after we originally met on Friendfeed through our mutual griping and troubles with the lack of good comment services for blogs. One of the things I like about Joshua is he’s very rarely on the fence about anything, and he’s never likely to pull his punches when sharing his opinion on a subject – as you’ll see in his answers here. I’m very happy to have him taking part in this series.

Here are Joshua’s answers – questions are in regular text, Joshua’s answers are in block quotes:

Which iPad model do you use? (original or iPad 2, WiFi or WiFi + 3G, storage size) Any particular reasons for choosing this model?

I’m currently rocking a 16 GB Wifi iPad 3, AKA new iPad. I got the new iPad for the Retina screen, but I chose not to go 3G/LTE because I think data plans are ridiculously priced. If I need the Internet, I just tether my iPhone to my iPad. Works great, and saves me cash. Up here in the great white north, a lot of us qualify for free tethering. I took advantage of that and went with the WiFi model. It’s been working out great.

Do you use any sort of case with the iPad? If so, which one/s and why?

I usually alternate between going naked, and a Pad and Quill Contega case. I tend to prefer using my new iPad case free, but the moment I plan on leaving the house I make sure I put it in a case. I wouldn’t be able to stomach scratching that sexy Retina Screen.

Flipboard, the flagship news / magazine app for the iPad, has been updated today – to Version 1.9. This is another major update for Flipboard for iPad (and iPhone) – and the big headline new feature is audio feeds and the ability to connect Flipboard to SoundCloud.

Here’s the full change list for Version 1.9:

★ Connect Flipboard to SoundCloud and enjoy amazing sounds created and shared by your friends and people you follow.
★ Explore dozens of recommended audio feeds in new Audio category in the Content Guide.
★ Accessibility for visually impaired people. Apple’s VoiceOver helps users navigate Flipboard and listen to articles.
★ Fully localized Japanese edition of Flipboard.
★ Use Readability to save articles to read later.
★ View related sections for social networks (new on iPhone). For example, tap on the “Twitter” section title to view sections like “Your Tweets,” “Your Favorites” and “Tweets Mentioning You.”

I’ve been playing with the updated app for a good while this morning and enjoying the new audio feeds quite a lot.

The iPad is a wonderfully easy and intuitive device to use. This is generally nothing but a major advantage – but at times it can cause issues if you have children who share your iPad or are allowed to use it from time to time. Problems you might encounter range from a child inadvertently deleting a frequently-used app to discovering that your child’s favorite new iPad game has allowed them to rack up hundreds of dollars worth of charges to your credit card via In-App purchases.

Fortunately, the iPad (and iOS) comes with a strong set of parental controls that you can choose to apply to reduce the chances of seeing any problems when you allow your kids to use an iPad, it’s a shared one or one of their own. On the iPad these are called Restrictions – and here’s a quick rundown of how they can be setup:

You’ll find these controls in the iPad’s Settings app – under Settings > General > Restrictions.

See. Touch. Learn. is a hugely impressive looking iPad app from Brain Parade, a publisher dedicated to creating solutions for children with autism and other developmental challenges. The app is described as a picture learning system for the iPad that brings picture cards into the 21st Century – and is designed specifically for those with autism and other special needs.

Here’s a slice of its App Store page including some of its most notable features

Parents and professionals use See.Touch.Learn.™ to build custom picture card lessons and automatically track their child’s responses. Includes a starter set of stunning, high-quality images and 60 exercises created by a certified assistant behavior analyst! Additional libraries of images and lessons are available for purchase from within the app.

✔ Build, save, copy and reuse your custom lessons
✔ No more organizing and reorganizing cards for each student
✔ Create unlimited scenarios and prompts
✔ Thousands of gorgeous picture cards to choose from
✔ Your entire collection is portable – take it with you everywhere
✔ Never misplace a card – Images are automatically backed up
✔ Save hundreds of dollars – only a fraction of the cost of physical cards
✔ No cards to wear out
✔ No cards to lose

With all the myriad use-cases for the iPad, this is still one of the areas that makes you recall Steve Jobs’ initial description of it as a ‘magical and revolutionary’ device – and makes you feel as if the device is living up to those words.

A Fact Every Day – 365 Fun Facts for Kids is a simple and entertaining iPad app. As the name suggests, it offers up an interesting fact for each day of the year – and every day a new fact page is unveiled in the app.

The topics covered by the daily facts include animals, nature, people, history, and more. The app’s interface is very basic and intuitive – it should be easy to navigate for even very young children.

Each day’s fact is given a full page to itself. The fact is read out loud, stated in a way that’s easy to understand, and accompanied by an illustration.

Here’s an iPad at work role I’d not seen before. As Wired reports, it comes as standard on the 2013 Cadillac XTS.

The inclusion of the iPad is part of a larger launch strategy by Cadillac to reassert itself as the world leader in luxury, and part of that is getting owners familiar with the range of new technologies incorporated into its largest sedan.

One of the hot new technologies that Cadillac wants its customers to get comfortable and familiar with is their CUE (Cadillac User Experience) infotainment system – and the iPad is set to play a key role in achieving that.

Each Apple tablet given to XTS owners will come preloaded with OnStar RemoteLink, MyCadillac and an app that simulates the CUE user experience, allowing owners to familiarize themselves with all the functionality of the new infotainment system from the comfort of their couch.

So I’ve never been in the market for a luxury car like a Caddy before, but I suppose soon this will become part of the standard list of questions at the dealership – warranty coverage, luxury bells & whistles, car safety ratings, and Oh Dear it comes with a Blackberry PlayBook – sorry no deal. :)

This week we ran our first-ever iPad Insight Site Survey. It’s something I’d been wanting to do for ages – as I really wanted your feedback on what you like and dislike about the site, and your thoughts on how we can improve it for you.

I am very happy to say that we got a great response to the survey – with hundreds of surveys completed and just a mountain of invaluable feedback and some excellent suggestions.

Thanks so, so much to all of you who took time to fill in the the survey! The feedback is incredibly helpful. Our gift card winner, for the $50 Amazon gift card, is Peter K. I’ve already contacted him by email, verified it was a valid account with a real person behind it, and sent off his gift card.

I’ve been watching survey results and responses throughout the week and also spent a couple of hours scanning them this afternoon. I’m going to spend lots of time going going through them thoroughly in days to come, but for now I thought it might be fun to share with you some of the results that are already shining through quite clearly.

It is the one iPad game that looks and acts like a tried-and-true RPG one would play on Windows 95 or an early Macintosh computer.

Unfortunately, that’s probably why this game doesn’t really work: It belongs on a computer, not on the iPad.

One $50 Amazon Gift Card To Be Won

Entry Deadline: Sunday May 13, 3:00PM US Central

Just a quick reminder – there’s a little over 24 hours left to take part in our first-ever site survey, and be entered for a chance to win a $50 Amazon gift card.

The survey is quite short and you should be able to get through it in 5 minutes. It’s a simple set of questions about what you like and don’t like on the site and what you’d like to see more or less of.

The response to the survey so far has been excellent and it’s giving me lots of great ideas on how to improve iPad Insight. This feedback is invaluable to me in working to make this site better in every possible way. If you have time to take the survey it will be hugely appreciated.

Just tap or click THIS LINK to take the survey – and thanks in advance for your help in making this the best iPad site on the web.

The CaseCrown Bold Standby Case for the New iPad / iPad 2 was one of the first cases I saw available for the new 2012 iPad, and one of the first ones I ordered. It’s one of a number of new iPad cases I’ve had around and been using for a while and I’m going to try to crank out reviews for a number of them soon – starting with this one.

Notes

The CaseCrown Bold Standby comes in three colors – black, purple, and red. I got a black one. It’s made of genuine leather and has an interior lining made of soft, non-scratch material. Here’s its feature list via the CaseCrown page for it:

-Built-in magnetic strip provides sleep/wake feature
-Cover has flip capability to transform the case into a horizontal viewing stand
-Open interior pocket for easy insertion of new iPad / iPad 2 and velcro flap to secure it in place
-Made from genuine leather
-Colors shown in pictures may slightly differ from actual product due to lighting and color settings

I bought this case on Amazon back in March for $25. It’s listed at the CaseCrown site today at $41.95. See below the end of the review for purchasing links.

Pocket for iPad, the app formerly know as Read It Later, was updated yesterday – the same day as its closest rival, Instapaper. The new version number is 4.1 and it’s a substantial update for Pocket.

Here’s the full change list:

New Article View Features:
- Swipe left or right to enable Page Flipping to read one page at a time
- Improved Dark theme and new Sepia theme with a focus on contrast and readability
- Increased maximum font size
Plus:
- Dark Theme throughout the app so you can use it comfortably at night
- Automatic detection of URLs copied to the clipboard so they can be added directly to Pocket
- Support for additional video sites, including TED and Devour
Fixes:
- Fixed a case where items in the list would become untappable
- Fixed a case where only partial lists would load
- Fixed a number of crashes and other minor bugs

I’ve been using both Pocket and Instapaper – and I have to say I’m very impressed with this update for Pocket. In particular, I like the way that switching between scrolling mode and page flipping mode is a little more seamless in Pocket. It changes as soon as you make either a swipe (left or right) or a scrolling gesture.

Pocket and Instapaper are both superb offline reading app – this is one of those categories where we are spoiled for choice on the iPad – and it’s great to see the developers of both apps continuously improving them.

Here’s an App Store link for Pocket; it’s a free app.

The Google+ iPhone app got an update this week (to another stupidly long version number) and a major overhaul to its UI. Here’s the brief change list for this latest update:

- New stream and navigation experience
- Various bugfixes and performance improvements

The app’s interface is radically different – it now has a predominantly very dark theme, a heavy emphasis on images and a much slicker feel all the way round. I tend to agree with +Robert Scoble that although the new look is quite attractive it really needs a text-mode option or similar for quicker scanning of the streams.

And of course, there’s still no sign of an iPad app for Google+, nearly a year now since it hit the App Store. At least now we have a decent alternative in iShare+ for Google+ for iPad – a proper Google+ client app for the iPad.

1TapHTML is a new iPad app that is simple and single-purposed: it lets you view web page source code on the iPad. Here’s its brief features list:

Web Page HTML, CSS, JS Syntax Highlight
On Safari, write view-source: in front of the URL like Chrome Browser ( shh, you also can write vs: it’s shorter… )
Copy URL on any App and open 1TapHTML, that’s all!
Follow Source Code links

I’ve not seen an iPad app that does this before. I’m no programmer and couldn’t play one on TV for love nor money – but I did install the app and give it a quick test just to confirm that it does what it says on the box, and it does.

I would imagine this might be a handy little tool for developers, particularly if more features are added in future updates. If we have any programmers here, let us know if there are similar / better apps of this type for the iPad.

Here’s an App Store link for 1TapHTML; it’s priced at $0.99 and is a universal app designed for both iPad and iPhone.

I did a post last week mentioning the new multi-touch iBook on George Harrison, which I was very impressed with. This week the book has had an update. It’s the first time I can recall seeing an update issued for an iBooks title.

This book is clearly labeled as having been ‘Made with iBooks Author’ – so this is my first time seeing one of the big touted benefits of Apple’s new publishing tool: the ability to update titles after they’ve been published.

I even got an email to let me know about the update and offer instructions on how to get it (which proved not to be needed at all):

Dear Patrick,
Thank you for purchasing George Harrison: Living In the Material World. We’ve updated the book and corrected a few quality issues. The new version of the book is available to you at no charge.

To download the new version:

1) Go to your iBooks library on your iPad.
2) Tap Edit, select George Harrison: Living In the Material World, delete it, and tap Done.
3) Tap Store, then Purchased, scroll down to the bottom of the page, tap on your Apple ID, and sign out.
4) Sign back in with your Apple ID and password.
5) Tap Purchases in the bottom right, then locate George Harrison: Living In the Material World and tap the cloud button next to it.

You will now have the updated version of the book in your iBooks library.

In fact, as soon as I opened iBooks after seeing the email I was prompted to enter my iTunes password and the George Harrison book was already updating and showing a progress bar below its thumbnail in the Library section.

Pretty slick, and definitely a cool feature. I wonder how easy it is to issue updates via other publishing tools, as again I don’t recall ever seeing one before for any of the other 20+ iBooks titles I’ve got.

Have any of you seen any of your iBooks titles updated in this way or any other method?

Instapaper – the superb offline reading app for iPad and iOS – has been updated today, to Version 4.2.

This is not huge update, but it’s got a few notable new features and some quite nice enhancements to existing features. Here’s the full change list for this new version:

- All-new Fast Pagination mode, a complete rewrite from the old pagination code that greatly improves accuracy and page-turn speed
- Optional iBooks-style page-turning animations and gestures
- New draggable dot bar to replace the scroll bar in pagination mode
- New two-finger-swipe gesture to close an article
- Full-screen now has “Auto” mode to switch to full screen after a few seconds
- The subtle Twilight Sepia color tint can now be selected at any time
- Added sharing to Drafts and Quotebook apps
- Many bugfixes and performance improvements

As ever, Instapaper is continually being improved – which is especially good to see just now with its competition stepping up their game.

Here’s an App Store link for Instapaper; it’s priced at $4.99 and is a universal app designed for both the iPad an iPhone.

DataMan Pro for iPad is on sale at 50% off this week – at just $1.99.

This is my favorite (and only) app for measuring and monitoring data usage on my iPad. It’s easy to use and has a very strong set of features. I especially like its alerts when you hit thresholds of data usage amounts and its ability to show you which apps are using data. (though I can’t get it to show me specifics on how much each app uses yet).

Here’s a rundown of its key features:

Real-Time Background Alerts
So while watching YouTube, listening to Spotify, surfing the web, or whatever, you are alerted the Minute you exceed your usage thresholds. Alerts appear in Notification Center and are sent using local notification rather than text message, eliminating any delay.
Breakthrough App Watch
DataMan is the world’s first app to show you what apps are using your data. Find out when apps are active and how much data they are eating. So you can root out data-hungry apps and save money.
Precise and Current
Track all data activities on iPad, including cellular (4G/3G) and Wi-Fi data. Give details for every minute, hour and day. DataMan gets the latest usage statistics directly from iOS, so no more outdated reports and delayed usage alerts from your carrier.
Other great features
・ Map where you used data with Geotag, handy when you travel and roam
・ Four usage thresholds and three allowance types to suit your data plan
・ Sound persistent background siren when monthly allowance is exceeded
・ Quickly see your current usage with numbered badge on app icon
・ Export detailed usage statistics, including time, location and bytes
・ Work with all carriers, no login required
・ History search
・ Visualize daily usage in a chart
・ Always-visible usage dashboard
・ Support the new iPad with 4G

If you want to keep a good eye on your iPad data usage, this app is well worth a look.

Here’s an App Store link for DataMan Pro for iPad.

One of the ‘PC Free’ features of iOS 5 on the iPad is the ability to update the iPad’s operating system software (iOS) over the air. – as in, without needing to connect to iTunes on a PC. This week, for instance, Apple released iOS 5.1.1 – the latest update to iOS – and it can be easily installed directly on your iPad.

Here’s how:

Just as you would before updating your PC operating system, it’s a good idea to make sure you’ve got a current backup of your iPad before starting. Depending on how you sync data on the iPad you may want to do a connected (to a PC running iTunes) backup and sync, or an iCloud backup on the iPad itself, or both. To do an iCloud backup on the iPad just go to Settings > iCloud and tap on the Storage & Backup button. Then choose the Back Up Now button at the bottom of the Storage & Backup screen.

Once you’re comfortable that you have got current backup and sync done, here are the steps to get your iPad iOS software updated”:

– Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

I Heart Etsy is a new iPad app that promises to make your Etsy shopping experience on the iPad fun, easy, and addicting. Etsy is the popular online marketplace for a wide array of creative and handcrafted products – including lots of fun and unique iPad accessories.

I’m a fan of Etsy and like to take a regular browse through it for cool iPad and Mac related items – so I’ve been giving this app a look this evening to see if it lives up to its App Store promises.

Dolphin Browser for iPad – one of the very best alternative browsers for the iPad – has been updated today, to Version 4.2.

The headline new feature in the update is New iPad Retina Display for a sleeker browsing experience. This was already a stellar looking (and performing) app, but now it looks more gorgeous than ever. Everything looks sharper on its pages and it has now become even more attractive as a Safari alternative on the iPad.

If Apple ever gives us the option to change our default browser on the iPad (cough iOS 6 wish list cough) then this will be mine right away. The app is a previous pick for Best Free iPad App of the Week, and was included in our list of the Best iPad Apps of 2011.

Here’s the rest of the change list for this latest update:

Keyboard: Your last used keyboard layout will reopen for fewer switches.
Browsing History: past sites and searches shown in suggestion list while searching in URL bar.
Various stability and performance improvement

And here’s an App Store link for Dolphin Browser for iPad; it’s still a free app.

One $50 Amazon Gift Card To Be Won

Entry Deadline: Sunday May 13, 3:00PM US Central

I’m continually thinking about ways to improve iPad Insight. One thing I’ve been meaning to do for a while now is ask you for your thoughts on how to make this site better. I think it’s about time for our first ever Site Survey – because you all are what really makes this site tick. You’re the reason that we’re here and we want to know what you like, what you don’t like, and how we can improve!

Here’s how you can help, and be entered for a chance to win that $50 Amazon Gift Card and grab some lovely iPad accessories with it:

– Just fill in our short site survey below. It’s only 12 questions and shouldn’t take much more than 5 minutes to fill in (tops).

– If you want to be in for a chance to win the gift card please be sure to fill in the email address field.

That’s it. Just tap or click THIS LINK to take the survey – and thanks in advance for your help in making this the best iPad site on the web.
