Skitch for iPad has been updated this week, to Version 1.0.3.

This latest update adds a new drawing tool and parental controls to manage access to the app’s web, camera roll, photos, and maps features – so if your kids like using the app you can control how much access they have to those areas.

Here’s the full change list for the new version:

- New drawing tool! You can now draw rounded rectangles.
- Added Parental Controls setting to manage access to web, camera roll, photos, and maps features.
- Several stability fixes.
- Localization to the following languages: French, Polish, Japanese, Italian, Russian, Spanish, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese (Simplified, Traditional), Korean, Vietnamese, Malay, Indonesian, Thai, Turkish, Dutch.

I’ve been using Skitch on my Mac for years and I’m a big fan of the iPad app too. It was a recent pick for Best Free iPad App of the Week.

Here’s an App Store link for Skitch for iPad; it’s still a free app.

A few weeks back I posted my initial iPad 3 Wish List. I mentioned around 8 features and things I’d like to see in the iPad 3 that’s expected to be unveiled and released next month. Those included a significantly improved display (which I think is now all but a certainty), a faster processor, more RAM, continued stellar battery life, and more.

One item I left out of that list and that I’ve been thinking about a fair bit lately is Siri – the voice command and dictation capabilities found on the iPhone 4S. Siri is officially in beta and is far from flawless in my usage of it so far – but it is still definitely a killer feature. The voice dictation within apps is especially great.

So I would definitely like to see Siri come to the iPad 3. While the voice command feature would be a nice addition, it’s the dictation ability that would really be immensely useful on the iPad. I also expect that Siri’s abilities will be expanded in the not-too-distant future and hopefully more support for 3rd party apps will be coming as well. All of this makes it even more attractive to have Siri on the next-gen iPad.

What do you all think? Does Siri make it on to your iPad 3 wish list?

The excellent 100 Cameras in 1 apps for iPad and iPhone have surpassed one million downloads in the App Store. A nice milestone for a very nice app.

100 Cameras in 1 for iPad is one of my favorite photo effects apps. It gets heavy use on my iPad 2. I included it in my post on the Best Photo Editing Apps for iPad, and in our list of Best iPad Apps of 2011.

Just in case you haven’t come across this app, here are some of its notable features and benefits:

➤ Fast, simple, and light. Designed for speed and ease-of-use
➤ Export 100 New Effects directly to Instagram!
➤ Use your existing library to give existing photos 100 new magical looks
➤ or… take new photos (iPad 2+ only)
➤ 100 different effects that use mixes of hardlight, overlay, and more with beautiful textures from around the world.
➤ iPad version has many many additional features, including hi-res effects at 2000×2000 pixels.
➤ A “new” kind of app that takes the editing process in a whole new, beautiful durections
➤ Share your photos on email, Twitter, Facebook, SmugMug and Flickr!
➤ Gamecenter support. Unlock fun achievements!

Congratulations to Trey Ratcliff on the well-deserved success of this app.

Here’s an App Store link for 100 Cameras in 1 for iPad; it’s priced at $3.99.

As of today the Things Cloud beta is public, no invite required. This is the beta that is testing out cloud sync (or over-the-air sync) for the excellent Things task management app for iOS and Mac.

This is the one essential feature that’s been missing from Things for (in my view) far too long; so long that it caused me to switch over to OmniFocus. As a big fan of Things, I’m very happy to see that there is finally some real progress being made in their efforts to implement cloud sync. The developers had been allowing more and more users into the beta process over recent months, and they’ve been getting very positive feedback on the latest stages of the beta.

We’ve had incredible feedback from our users, telling us that Things Cloud is proving to be both fast and stable. Some of our users have adopted the beta entirely and created exceptionally large databases.

You know, like not downloading new content automatically like Newsstand apps are supposed to. Or, for its latest trick, routinely ‘forgetting’ that I’m a subscriber.

This morning, as it does many mornings, the app greeted me with the lovely page shown above – telling me how swell it would be to become a subscriber and prompting me to do so now as my free period has expired. Great idea – except that I am already a subscriber, and have been for many months now.

A new report out today says work on Microsoft Office for iPad is complete, and the app will soon be submitted to Apple for approval.

Fittingly, the report is an exclusive in The Daily, the first iPad-only newspaper. They even say they’ve had some hands on time with the upcoming app:

A brief hands-on with a working prototype of the software revealed a number of new things. The app’s user interface is similar to the current OneNote app, but it has hints of Metro, the new design language that can be seen in Windows Phone and in the as-yet-released Windows 8 desktop operating system.

Word, Excel and PowerPoint files can be created and edited locally and online. But it’s unclear if Microsoft will support other Office apps at launch or at all.

Their sources also say there is not an Android version in the works at this time; and that an updated OneNote iOS app will be released ‘to reflect the Metro design language’. That last part would be quite nice to see – as OneNote is a very nice app, but they currently have only an iPhone version.

And of course Microsoft Office for iPad is a big, big deal. For tons of iPad users, especially those using it within a corporate environment, this will be an essential suite to have. For Microsoft, it may be their best way of gaining any momentum in the tablet arena – through their software.

Wouldn’t it be fun if this was one of the new apps announced at the (expected) iPad 3 unveiling next month? I doubt it would be a headline app, as those will presumably be examples that take great advantage of a new retina quality display; but it would still be a big-name to talk about and highlight the quality and range of apps in the iPad App Store.

The app is published by Light Sleepers, who describe themselves as ‘a small independent crew of multimedia artists, passionate about creating high-quality entertainment for children
that is beautiful, innocent and sweet’. I did a review of the superb Koto Go Silence title from Light Sleepers a couple months ago. It’s a fantastic animated iPad book and my daughter and I both love it. So we had high hopes for Ann Can’t Sleep.

Last week The Economist announced it had reached 1.5 million subscribers for the first time, and highlighted the contribution and the potential for growth of their digital subscriptions.

It took us 160 years to reach one million circulation, but only seven years to reach one and a half million. We now expect to reach two million within five years, fueled by rapid growth in digital circulation. By then we expect to have more digital than print readers.

Not surprisingly, the iPad edition – The Economist for iPad – is making a major contribution to the title’s digital success. Here are a few numbers on the iPad edition that the publishers shared with me:

– Over 127,000 of their subscribers are reading The Economist on the iPad every week.

– The number of iPad users is growing fast.

– Their research shows that readers of The Economist for iPad are spending and average of one hour and 45 minutes reading the weekly package.

The Economist is an outstanding publication; it’s great to see that its publishers are optimistic about its digital future, and that the iPad edition is a big part of that.

Thermo is about as simple an iPad app as you could ask for. It does one thing and does it quite nicely – with a bit of big and bold thrown in for good measure. Its App Store page describes it as a ‘little pocket thermometer’, which is a throwback to its days as just an iPhone app.

The developers tell me that the iPhone version has had over 750,000 downloads – and last week it was updated and became a universal app with a new iPad version.

The one thing the app does it present the current temperature, along with yesterday’s as a point of comparison. I’ve been trying it out for a few days and it’s proved to be dead-on accurate every time I’ve used it.

It feels like an app that’s better-suited to the iPhone and pocket devices – for just a quick check of the temp before going out for example. Having said that, the iPad version is nicely done and if you have a need for a big thermometer on your favorite tablet, then Thermo is a great fit.

Here’s an App Store link for Thermo; it’s a free app.

Initial results from a research study in Auburn, Maine show that kindergarten literacy scores increased in classrooms where iPads were used. Auburn is the first public school system in the US to provide iPads to each of their youngest students; and they are monitoring the iPad program carefully. The research findings are part of a randomized control trial, as explained by a report from the Auburn School Department:

During the Fall of 2011, the district provided iPads to half of Auburn’s sixteen kindergarten classrooms. The remaining eight classes used traditional resources. The eight iPad classes were selected at random to provide a better examination of the short term literacy impacts. Auburn kindergartners from both settings completed a series of standardized literacy assessments in early September (pre-iPad) and in late November (post-iPad), which provide an objective measure on each groups’ emerging literacy skills.

The study results were presented last week, and they are very positive:

The School Committee was pleased to learn that the study results were quite positive. In fact, students in the iPad classes outperformed non- iPad students, on average, across every literacy measure they were tested on.

This new-ish iPad game really looks pretty slick. It’s called Recorder Master and the game play is controlled by sounds made with an actual recorder. It’s billed as a perfect introduction to music, and has already garnered some impressive awards and acclaim.

Here’s a little slice of its App Store intro:

Learn to play the recorder in a fun and addictive way. Play notes on the recorder to avoid obstacles, collect bonuses and scare away evil birds, on your way to become a “Recorder Master”…

Become an expert in playing songs while working on rhythm, correct and stable tone production, ear training, fingering technique and more!

I’m about as musical as a lamppost, but this certainly looks and sounds like a great idea to me. I may see if my daughter wants to give it a try sometime soon.

Here’s an App Store link for Recorder Master; it’s a free app.

NBA Game Time Courtside for iPad – the NBA’s official app for the iPad – has been updated this week, to Version 3.1.4.

The update adds two new video channels focused on the upcoming All Star Weekend – All Star Highlights and All Star Scene. I’m sure these will be full of the latest throughout next weekend; and the All Star Highlights section already has some great content in the meantime. It features clips of entrants for this year’s shooting and slam dunk contests, highlight clips for some of the starters in this year’s game, and some cool highlights and general clips from last year’s All Star weekend.

Here’s what else is new in this update:

Updated the app with scoring and support for the games.

Bug fixes, including a fix for crashes some users were experiencing.

All-Star Highlights and All-Star Scene

This app was my pick for Best Free iPad App of the Week just a few weeks ago. It’s nice to see it add dedicated content sections for the All Star weekend.

Here’s an App Store link for NBA Game Time Courtside; it’s still a free app.

This week Apple released a developer preview of the next major version of the Mac’s OS X operating system – which is called Mountain Lion and will be released this summer. One of the little niceties included in the developer preview is the new default wallpaper, called Galaxy.

Happily, the Galaxy wallpaper also looks great on the iPad, with a little resizing. So if you want to have a little early taste of the Mountain Lion desktop on your iPad, this might be just the ticket.

Since Day 1 of iPad 3 rumors a hugely improved display, likely retina quality like the iPhone 4, has been the most often mentioned expected new feature for the next-gen iPad. And now, at least according to the clever folks at MacRumors, the 2048X1536 retina display for the iPad 3 is confirmed.

They’ve managed to get hold of one of the ‘leaked’ iPad 3 displays that have been making the rounds of the iPad 3 rumor circuit over recent months.

MacRumors has now been able to obtain one of these iPad 3 displays and examine it under a microscope in an effort to determine whether it is indeed an ultra-high resolution Retina display. Physically, the purported iPad 3 display is the same size as the current iPad 1 and iPad 2 display at 9.7" in diagonal, and looks quite similar to the naked eye.

Once they got the iPad 3 display under a microscope the differences became clear.

However, when comparing the iPad 3 display to one from an iPad 2 under a microscope, the difference in resolutions becomes readily apparent, with the iPad 3 display’s pixels appearing to be one-quarter the size of those on the iPad 2. … We highlighted a cluster of 4 pixels (2×2) from the iPad 2 to compare it to the same area on the iPad 3. On the iPad 3, the same cluster was occupied by 16 pixels (4×4) — exactly twice the resolution in each direction.

Extrapolating out, the iPad 3 screen should carry a full resolution of 2048×1536, exactly twice the linear resolution of the iPad 1 and iPad 2 which is 1024×768.

I’ve said all along that I believed the hugely improved display for the iPad 3 was virtually a lock, and as we get closer and closer to the iPad 3 announcement (widely expected to be Wednesday March 7) I’ve seen nothing but mounting evidence to support that view.

Although it will hardly be a surprise if this latest report proves true when the iPad 3 is unveiled, it is still definitely very good news. The current iPad display is already excellent – with this upgrade it should be nothing short of amazing.

It seems like every time you blink it’s another holiday weekend. This is apparently President’s Day Weekend – and of course that means plenty of great sale on iPad games and iPad apps. As usual, EA are leading the way with many of their best-known iPad games on sale for up to 90% off.

Here’s a few of the bargains I’ve seen so far today:

Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars HD: 90% off through Monday 2/20 – down from $9.99 to 99 cents

FIFA Soccer 12 for iPad: 90% off as part of EA’s President’s day sale – $9.99 down to $0.99

Monopoly for iPad: 90% off as part of EA’s President’s day sale – $9.99 down to $0.99

SCRABBLE for iPad: 90% off as part of EA’s President’s day sale – $9.99 down to $0.99

You can check out all the EA iPad games – and spot the 99 cent bargains – on their App Store page.

I’m sure there are lots more bargains to be had on iPad apps this weekend – let us know of any you spot in the comments.

Apologies for the cheesy post title – but hopefully some of you remember that funny scene in Jerry Maguire. Anyway, here’s a subject I’ve been thinking about for quite a while:

I hope that the iPad tips & tricks and reviews here are helpful to you – but I’d always like to be able to offer more help and advice, and to find the best ways to do that. One way that occurs to me is to be able to provide more answers to your iPad questions. I get quite a number of these via Twitter and email, but the answers I give to those are usually just seen by one person or perhaps just a few on Twitter. So here’s an idea I’d like to try out for this:

iPad Questions Answered on the iPad Insight Google+ Page Every Friday

I’ll take your iPad questions on the iPad Insight Google+ page every Friday afternoon. This way if there are common questions or topics that many of you have, the answers will be there for all to see. Obviously I won’t be able to answer every single question, but I’ll do my best to provide good answers as often as I can, even if it’s just proving a pointer to where to find the right information / answer. I’ll give this a try starting today and see if it’s of interest to enough of you to make it a regular thing. Hit the break for the details and a request for your help …

Vodio – the iPad videos app that brings you personalized content – has been updated this week, to Version 1.1.3.

A few of the headline features added in this update are AirPlay video support, support for HD videos, and the ability to keep playing videos in the background – which is great for when you’re listening to music videos.

Here’s the full change list for this latest Vodio update:

* AirPlay support – watch all videos on your TV using Apple TV
* HD enabled – Enjoy high definition videos when available.
* Continuous play enabled – Watch one video right after the other. Try it with a music channel :)
* New preferences screen in the settings that includes the options to:
- Turn sounds off/on
- Keep playing videos in the background. Again, this is great for music videos :)
- Use the ‘Thumbs Up’ button to share videos on Facebook. (Get 2 actions for the price of 1)
* Simplified mechanism to add/remove channels; simply click any channel to add or remove it.
* Newly designed email templates for video sharing.

Vodio was our pick for Best Free iPad App of the Week a few weeks back; it’s great to see it getting a substantial update like this one.

Here’s an App Store link for Vodio; it’s still a free app.

Fractal for iPad – or Fractal: Make Blooms Not War, to use its full name – has been re-released in the iPad App Store and is free for today only (February 16th). Fractal is a unique game that’s described like so by its developers:

a new ambient music puzzler experience. Combo, Chain, and Cascade your way through a pulsing technicolor dreamscape that reacts to your every move, while manipulating Fractals, creating Blooms, and expanding your consciousness at 130 BPM. On the surface it’s a mere puzzle game, but as you dig deeper, untold dimensions of expression unfold. Intuitive but complex, challenging but not harsh, Fractal is a truly engaging experience.

The re-release is due to a dispute with the previous publisher – you can read the developers’ blog post for further details on that. App Store policies make it extremely difficult for developers to offer any sort of special treatment to those who purchased the previous version of the game – but admirably they are doing their best to do right by those customers. They’re offering the game for free today, then for just 99 cents until next Tuesday (2/21) – and then returning it to full price afterwards.

Users who have the previous version of the game installed can choose to keep it, but it will no longer be updated and cannot be reinstalled – again, see the developers’ blog post for full details on all the options available.

Here’s an App Store link for Fractal, the new / re-released version.

Yesterday saw the release of the latest newspaper iPad edition to hit the iPad App Store – London Evening Standard iPad Edition. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this paper, here’s a little background on it, via its App Store page:

The London Evening Standard is a quality daily newspaper, published in tabloid format in London, England. It is the regional evening paper for London and the southeast of England, with coverage of national and international news as well as topical features.

The paper celebrates London and what living in London is all about. It reports the news and fights balanced campaigns on behalf of Londoners.

Our features deliver a different flavor each day
Monday – Trends: Everything that is current, hip and of the moment in London from fashion to gadgets to cars
Tuesday – Fashion: Style and Sex: All the latest fashion and shopping advice
Wednesday – Heath and Beauty
Thursday- London Life: Living in the greatest city in the world and a guide to culture in the capital
Friday – Film and Music: Welcome to the weekend. What to do, what to see and where to see it in the greatest city in the world.

I lived in London for many years and The London Evening Standard (or just The Standard) was a daily purchase and my reading material for the train trip home every evening. It’s a much ‘lighter’ style of paper than the morning broadsheets like The Times, The Guardian and others but usually a good read, especially during a commute home. So of course I was curious to see what their iPad edition is like when it hit the App Store yesterday.

There are now over 190,000 iPad apps in the iPad App Store. Games, productivity apps, newspaper and magazine apps, music and musical apps, and so on – but this is the first one I can recall seeing that serves as a wedding planner.

It’s called Wedding Planner for iPad and by the looks of that video demo it’s quite good at doing what it says on the box.

I’m a happily married man, and I’m pretty sure even if we were planning a renewal of vows I wouldn’t be the one taking the lead in the planning department – so I’m not the target audience for this app.

If you are at a point where wedding planning is on the horizon and you want to avoid having to hire Jennifer Lopez to get it figured out, this might be a good option and $12.99 well spent. Then again, I have pretty much zero wedding planning experience – so feel free to correct me in the comments.

Here’s an App Store link for Wedding Planner for iPad; it’s priced at $12.99.

WinZip is a new iPad app released this week, and an iPad version of the long-established and leading name in file compression software for many years (more than 20 according to its App Store page).

Here are some of the capabilities of the app:

- Open Zip files and Zip attachments from email
- Browse and view Zip files, including multi-file attachments
- Open encrypted Zip files
- Copy the contents of Zip files to the clipboard
- View Zip file attachments from webmail (Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, etc)
Zipped file types that can be previewed:
- .txt, .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx, .rtf, .pdf, .key, .numbers, .pages, .htm, .htm, .jsp, .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, .tif, .tiff, .png, .gif

There’s no lack of current iPad and iOS apps that can manage compressed files (including those in the .zip format) – but I think it’s just very cool to see WinZip make it to the App Store. I installed it just a little while ago, as much for nostalgia as anything else I guess. It works as advertised. It’s not going to rival GoodReader and other far more versatile apps, but if you just need a good, old friend of an app to handle compressed files on the iPad then this may be a very good option – being a free app doesn’t hurt either.

Here’s an App Store link for WinZip; it’s a free app and a universal app designed to run on both the iPad and iPhone.

I’m not normally one for listening to talks held with financial analysts, even when Apple are involved – but I was interested to tune in to the stream of Tim Cook’s talk at yesterday’s Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference. I’d heard that he had quite a bit to say about the iPad during this talk so I listened to it this morning.

I’m very glad I did – partly because Cook had some very interesting things to say about the iPad, and also because it made me appreciate Cook much more as a speaker. Here are a few things Cook said about the iPad that stood out for me:

On iPad sales reaching 55 million in well under two years on the market:

To put it in context, it took us 22 years to sell 55 million Macs; it took us about five years to sell 22 million iPods, it took us three years to sell that many iPhones. As you said it’s on a trajectory that’s off the charts.

He notes that it’s being used by his mother, who took to it with ease; it’s being used by his trainer at the gym he goes to in the morning, it’s being used heavily in education and in the enterprise.

And so from my point of view it’s the fastest adoption across a wide range that I’ve ever seen.
