Saudi-Arabian Style in the Centre of Docklands

A year ago this coming weekend, on a gloriously sunny Saturday afternoon, we had the pleasure of being part of Nadia and Jonathan’s colourful wedding day. Nadia got in touch with us just a couple of months previously to say that she needed some help planning the final touches of her London wedding day taking place at the Marriott Hotel, West India Quay in the heart of London’s Docklands.

When Nadia and her mother met with me to go through their plans I knew it was going to be a really beautiful day full of personal cultural touches, lots of vibrant colours and also a real family celebration. The couple were living apart in different areas of the world and had been for some time as Nadia was living in Saudi Arabia due to her work and Jonathan was on a Navy ship on the east coast of Scotland, so they had spent very little time with each other and their families in the run up to the wedding day.

Preparations started the day before the wedding when Nadia and her friends and family had their Mehndi party. This is a very traditional part of Muslim culture before a wedding and Nadia’s henna was very detailed and intricate and looked beautiful against the bright colours of her sari.

The wedding day itself began at the reception which is where Nadia, her mother and her bridesmaids had all decided to get ready before heading off to the Mosque for their traditional Muslim ceremony. Nadia wanted to fuse her Muslim culture with an English edge and so had chosen to wear a traditional Sari for the ceremony before changing into a white wedding dress for the reception. The two outfits could not have been more contrasting from the bright and bold colours and jewels on one, to the simple and elegant white of the other, but it was a great way to combine both cultures together.

After not having spent much time together in the lead up to their wedding, Nadia and Jonathan decided that they wanted to do a ‘First Look’ before making the journey across London. This proved to be a good opportunity for the couple to spend some rare alone time together before heading to the ceremony, all captured expertly by photographer Sean Gannon.

Guests travelled from far and wide to attend the wedding and enjoyed a journey on a traditional Routemaster bus to the ceremony and back again, providing a little glimpse into London life.

The Suleymaniye Mosque in East London was the ceremony venue and upon entering traditional customs were observed with the men and women separating and taking their places on the floor to witness the marriage take place. It was a real festival of colour with everyone embracing traditional Muslim dress.

Following the ceremony, everyone returned to the hotel for the wedding breakfast. The room was styled simply but there were a few small touches to incorporate elements of both Nadia and Jon, with arabic lanterns adorning the tables and a colour scheme of yellow and blue to reflect Jonathan’s naval background.

Guests enjoyed traditional Lebanese food during the wedding breakfast which was prepared by Noura in London’s Mayfair and washed it down with refreshing Mint Tea.

The three-tiered cake proved to be very popular with guests. Designed by leading cake maker, Maisie Fantaisie, the cake incorporated the couple’s colour scheme with blue ribbon around each tier and yellow sugar flowers.

Once the band started playing, everyone got up on the dance floor to watch the first dance…

Design Concept: Nautical Wedding Inspiration

Oh Buoy!

After weeks of cold and rain and even some snow showers, word on the grapevine is that on Sunday, London is going to get some sunshine. Hooray! This news couldn’t have come at a better time as we are dreaming of blue skies, the sun beating down on us, ice creams and the beach. With this in mind, we’re kicking off our first design board of 2013 with a focus on the Nautical. So if you are planning a wedding with a nautical vibe, hopefully you’ll find some inspiration below.

So, how do you plan a nautical wedding? Well, here’s a very brief style guide to help pull it all together…

Colours
We’ve limited this board to a predominantly navy and white colour palette, however you can also include hints of gold, amber, green or red to add an extra dimension to your colour scheme. And of course, different shades of blue – such as a bright Royal Blue – can also work really well to give a slightly different spin on the traditional colour palette.

Patterns
When we think of anything nautical, we immediately conjure up an image of stripes. Using a bold repetitive pattern in this way gives any design an edge of modernity, but in abundance it could be quite overpowering. Ways in which you can incorporate stripes into your wedding day could include: striped linens on your cocktail reception tables, striped ribbon around your bouquets, posies and buttonholes, a striped design on your invitations, and even striped socks for the groom.

Decor
There are so many props associated with the nautical theme – from anchors and oars through to buoys and boats – and using a few of them in clever ways as decor throughout your wedding will help to personalise your day and create a strong overall nautical style. Let’s take a boat as an example… Filled with ice, it could serve as a way to chill drinks at an informal outdoor wedding. Alternatively, if you have a number of boats they could be tuned upside down and used as casual outdoor seating for guests to use during a drinks reception. Or perhaps you would prefer to use a boat in lieu of a card box and gift table. And finally, if you are getting married by the water, a boat could be your send-off vehicle as you and your new partner sail off into the sunset.

Music
When thinking about the styling of your wedding, try to touch on all of the senses. It doesn’t have to stop at what the visual. Music can create real impact and incorporating a song which references sailing, water or the sea could be a clever way of alluding to your nautical theme. David Gray’s ‘Sail Away’ is one such example, as is the Otis Redding classic ‘Sitting on the Dock of the Bay’.

Food
Continuing to play to your guests’ senses, consider the food you serve. From the traditional mini cones of fish and chips, through to a more elaborate and unusual seafood station in the evening reception. There are lots of ways to bring fresh fish and seafood into your day – just be mindful of having an alternative for those guests with allergies and intolerances.

The UKAWP Wedding Sanctuary – a wedding fair with a difference…

The Wedding Sanctuary 2013 – organsied by the UK Alliance of Wedding Planners

Following news of the cancellation of the Designer Wedding Show (and its subsequent revival), there has been much debate in the industry in recent weeks regarding the future of the traditional wedding fair and the emergence of more intimate and bespoke approaches to helping Brides and Grooms plan their Wedding day. One event which we think should be top of every engaged couple’s list is The Wedding Sanctuary – an innovative wedding show designed to offer top design inspiration, personal style advice and the best one on one planning support available. The event is organised by the UK Alliance of Wedding Planners, of which we are members, and involves many of the leading names in the wedding industry, from florists through to photographers, to ensure that every part of the wedding day is covered.

This year’s event is taking place on Sunday 3rd March, at RSA House in Central London and is being supported by You & Your Wedding Magazine. On the day, there will be both a morning and an afternoon session with tickets costing from as little as £10 per person – and there are also ticket deals available including subscriptions to Y&YW magazine so you can get even more inspiration after the event!

So, what can you expect from The Wedding Sanctuary? Well, there will be the opportunity for you to talk to some of the experts in the wedding industry such as photographers Julia Boggio Studios, florist Mary Jane Vaughan and videographers The Dreamcatchers who will all be paired with a wedding planner to provide top tips, advice and answer your questions. Staggered will also be there to chat to grooms and provide help with suits, stag dos and speeches in a dedicated Groom’s Room which will also house The Cocktail Service – a great team of mixologists offering a range of tasty cocktails!

And if you’re looking with help on ways to style your venue, there will be a dedicated inspiration zone offering tablescape ideas with pricing and supplier details. Just Bespoke is designing a table for this area so if you do pop along, come over and say hi – we’d love to meet you!

It doesn’t end with the venue though, in the Boudoir you can get hair and make-up advice from The Hepburn Collection and Mariam Jensen and outfit help from the likes of Johanna Hehir and Victoria Millesime. It’s a great place to get pampered whilst nibbling on canapes and sipping champagne courtesy of Harbour & Jones.

And if that wasn’t enough, there will also be presentations from experts and the chance for one on one consultations with a UKAWP wedding planner.

Looking ahead at 2013 wedding trends

So, we are a little bit late to the party with this post as 2013 is well underway and many of the magazines and blogs have already shared their views on 2013 wedding trends and what’s hot in the world of weddings in the months ahead. However, we want to have our say too!

If you’re getting married this year, this post is for you as we take a look at trends, ideas and predictions which could influence your own W-day styling. So here’s our thoughts on the 2013 wedding trends which will be influencing your styling and planning decisions this year…

Colour
Every year Pantone announces it’s colour of the year and 2013 sees Emerald 17-5641 taking the spotlight. This rich jewel tone is perfect whatever the season you say “I do”. We’ve given you some suggested colour palettes below for each of the seasons, and how you choose to implement the colour is up to you. It could be through your florals, bridesmaids dresses, or even your table linens…

Linens
Any of our clients will tell you – we love a table linen here at Just Bespoke which is good news as this year, we’re going to see more and more couples opting for unusual linens for their weddings. Seduced by the pretty on Pinterest, we’ll see everything from bold stripes and bright patterns through to sparkles, sequins and spots, ruffles, raffia, tulle and two-tone. You name it…we’ll be seeing lots of it. Now just to find a UK supplier who offers the breadth of variety that we see in the US…

Over-sized Bouquets
Florals continue to play a big role in the styling of a wedding and over the coming months we’re going to see a shift from neat and compact bouquets, to large over-sized hand-tied arrangements. Personally, we love the evolution of the bridal bouquet and can’t wait to see some big impact blooms making their way down the aisle this year…

Succulents
Staying on the topic of flowers, we will also see florals attacking the senses this year with lots more scent, texture and interesting shapes and sizes, thanks to the addition of more succulents in both bouquets and arrangements…

Food Stations
With the popularity of street food at the minute, we’ll see a lot more variety and originality in the types of food being served at weddings in 2013. From park-up and serve style affairs such as Anna Mae’s and Eat My Pies through to themed food stations such as Mexican Street Food and Chinese live cooking stations. Food will be a lot more interactive in the months ahead…

Evening Ceremonies
Last year, the government relaxed the laws regarding when you could conduct wedding ceremonies in England and Wales. This means that whilst previously wedding ceremonies had to take place between 8am and 6pm, couples can now get married at any time of the day, enabling evening ceremonies for the very first time. We can’t wait to get our first midnight wedding but for now, here’s some inspiration…

Just Bespoke News: Going to the next level with UKAWP

UKAWP Level Two Membership

So far, Just Bespoke has had a good start to the year. We took a slightly extended break after the Christmas holidays to recharge our batteries after a stunning wedding just before New Year’s Eve at The Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College and Claridge’s, but we’re now back with a vengeance and busy working with our clients for some exciting 2013 weddings in the months ahead.

However, we also started this week with some exciting news…we have just been awarded Level 2 Membership of the UK Alliance of Wedding Planners. We’ve been members of the UKAWP for the last three years and have gradually worked our way up through the ranks, and it’s great that our continued learning and development, alongside our wedding planning, has been recognised and rewarded.

The UK Alliance of Wedding Planners aims to promote professionalism in the industry and since joining in 2010, we have taken part in numerous workshops, conferences and events to help better the Just Bespoke business and work towards helping to create a more professional industry all round.

For a planner, being associated with the UKAWP gives us access to a huge support network of like-minded people, as well as offering the opportunity throughout the year to develop our businesses with new skills, gain advice on areas of business (both practical and theory) and show the work that we do as a group to brides and grooms.

For anyone looking for a planner, the UKAWP is a great resource as it gives brides and grooms access to professional and experienced wedding planners up and down the country, who all abide by the Alliance’s strict code of business.

So, we’re off to celebrate – have a great week!

Looking Back on Just Bespoke Weddings in 2012

Oh, what a year!

Well, it’s January 2nd and i’m starting the year as I mean to go on by keeping you all updated on what is happening here at Just Bespoke. 2012 was a crazy year in so many ways and on a personal and professional level it is going to be a hard one to beat. From moving house, celebrating our first wedding anniversary and enjoying some lovely holidays, to working with the most incredible couples, securing some amazing PR coverage and heading into 2013 with a to-die-for client list, New Year’s Eve was spent celebrating the successes – both big and small – and giving ourselves a pat on the back for everything that we have achieved!

Of course, it hasn’t all been plain sailing…the blog hasn’t been updated since May, our website needs a bit of a re-vamp, our expenses remain untouched, and networking has taken a back seat . However these are the perils of owning your own business. You have to prioritise and work out what needs to be done today and what can wait to be done tomorrow, or next week or next month…

We aren’t complaining though. It really has been an incredible 12 months.

So, to give you a flavour of Just Bespoke’s 2012, here’s a look at some of the weddings that have kept us busy.

In the Navy | Nadia and Jonathan
Our first wedding of the year was the cross-cultural marriage of Nadia and Jonathan. Nadia lives in Saudi Arabia and Jonathan is in the Navy so they didn’t have a UK base and needed some help with their London wedding. The day itself was a beautiful fusion of two cultures with a traditional ceremony at a London Mosque followed by an English-style reception in the heart of Canary Wharf in London. Nadia and Jonathan did a ‘first look’ and it was lovely to watch them see each other before the ceremony for the first time. There were lots of traditional elements throughout the day from Nadia’s attire, through to the food and drink which was served, and these were complemented by some English touches including a routemaster bus, a great pop band and Nadia’s white wedding dress which she wore after the ceremony. Nadia and Jonathan were lovely to work with and we wish them lots of happiness for the years ahead!

An Entertainment Extravaganza | Katie and Dan
Katie and Dan wanted an English style wedding at Katie’s family home in the heart of Essex. In the weeks leading up to the big day, we experienced a typical English summer – torrential rain. In fact, this continued right up to an hour before the ceremony when the sun came out and we experienced one of the hottest days of 2012. Their wedding will be remembered for a being a colourful and personal affair, full of music. Both Katie and Dan love to dance and this was reflected in the varied entertainment throughout the day from the London Gospel Choir in the church, the Jazz band during the drinks reception, and the Abba Tribute band and Rock/Pop band in the evening. I will look back on Katie and Dan as having the best wedding breakfast entrance as husband and wife that i’ve ever witnessed and hope they continue to lead a fun and happy life together!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream | Joanne and Rob
There are some couples who you click with immediately and Jo and Rob are one of them. They came to me early in the year as they wanted help planning their wedding. For personal reasons they had a short time-frame for their big day and we started work immediately on creating a Midsummer Night’s Dream affair at the gorgeous Hengrave Hall. Jo and Rob desperately wanted their wedding breakfast to be held outside in the courtyard and we had a nervous wait to see if the weather would be on our side. Fortunately it was and guests enjoyed an amazing day full of trees imported from Germany, a celebrity DJ and fireworks. We can’t say much more as their beautiful wedding is going to be featured in a leading wedding magazine later this year so keep your eyes peeled. Jo and Rob have become great friends of Just Bespoke and I feel very privileged to have met them.

Romance in the Ruins | Andi and Stu
When Andi told us where she was getting married, we were even more excited for her wedding day…the Ruins at Cowdray Park is such a unique venue but it would also be our first outdoor ceremony. The day itself was full of sunshine and Andi and Stu had a stylish and elegant affair which started in the ruins and ended in a marquee in the grounds. The couple had stunning florals, tasty food and a beautiful sparkler send off – and not to mention two gorgeous designer dresses. Their wedding couldn’t have been more suited to who they are as a couple – it was magical, full of personal touches and a great way to end the Summer. A beautiful wedding for a beautiful couple!

A Multicultural Marriage | Reshma and Luke
Reshma and Luke are such a gorgeous couple and we were really excited to be part of their wedding day. They were having an Indian / English fusion wedding complete with two ceremonies, 250 guests, surprise performances from Bollywood dancers and Dhol drummers and authentic Indian cuisine. The wedding was one of our most complex to date, but it was also one of the most interesting and enjoyable weddings that we have been a part of. Reshma and Luke are two of the nicest people we have had the pleasure of working with and they deserve every happiness for the future.

Winter Wedding in the City | Tiffanie and James
Our last wedding of the year took place the day before New Year’s Eve and it was a great way to end 2012. Tiffanie and James live in the US and so all of the planning and decisions took place over email and Skype. In fact, up until 10 days before the wedding, I hadn’t seen or met either of them. Their wedding involved two fantastic venues – The Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College and Claridge’s, and it was a beautiful winter wedding with an ivory, blush and metallic colour palette. We had linens flown in from the States, some of the best suppliers in the industry, and bridesmaids in Monique Lhuillier dresses – it was beautiful. And as many of the guests had flown thousands of miles for the wedding, as well as planning the wedding day itself, Just Bespoke also planned a number of activities for guests over the Christmas period, including two private drinks parties, numerous sightseeing excursions, football matches and afternoon tea. Tiffanie and James were great fun to work with and I will miss our weekly Skype calls but wish them lots of love for the years ahead.

It’s been a busy old year and I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with such lovely clients, at some amazing venues, with a fantastic team of suppliers by my side. Just Bespoke is still in its infancy but I have big dreams and exciting plans for the year ahead and I look forward to taking you all on the journey with me. Thank you to all of our clients past and present who have entrusted us with your wedding day – it is a huge honour to be part of such a special day and we love every minute of working with you to achieve something so personal and unique.

Yay! It feels like summer is finally here…so we’re breathing a big sigh of relief and keeping our fingers firmly crossed that our upcoming weddings will be graced with sunshine, warm nights and outdoor fun…we hope so at least. We have a couple of weeks to go before the third Just Bespoke wedding of the year and it looks set to be pretty special indeed so no doubt you’ll be hearing a bit more about it over the next few weeks – especially if you follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

However, aside from client work, we have also been keeping our eyes peeled for some wedding ideas for you to incorporate into your own big day…so here are this week’s Mid-Week Musings.

Source | Southbound Bride

This year, lots of our clients are looking to us to find quirky ways for them to offer food and drink at their weddings and we are seeing lots of food and drink station ideas emerging. This one in particular caught our eye – the Bloody Mary Bar. It’s fun and interactive for guests and allows them to make their own Bloody Mary to their tastes. Other options we are seeing include Taco Stations and Pancake Tables. These are also a great idea if you are planning on throwing a Rehearsal Dinner or even a Morning After Brunch as these tend to be less formal and food stations lend themselves really well to these occasions.

There continues to be a love for miniature cakes at weddings this summer and these cute, delicate and stylish cake stands are a perfect way to display them. The platforms are draped in hanging jewels to create a really beautiful yet practical decoration. Rather than making them ourselves, we’d love to source some ready-made for a wedding this summer, so if anyone knows where we can get our hands on some, please do drop us a line!

Earlier on today, we were doing some research for a wedding later this year and we cast our eyes upon this beautiful bouquet – and more importantly the beautiful wispy pink filler-type flowers. After a quick shout-out on Twitter to our florist friends, they were identified as Astilbe Japonica and we fell in love! They are perfect and so pretty and we have a feeling that they are going to become one of our firm favourites…

Sorry for the recent blogging hiatus…wedding season has well and truly kicked off at Just Bespoke and we’ve already been part of two fantastic weddings during May – more about those on the blog very soon!

So, as we start getting into the nitty gritty of wedding design for a number of our clients for their upcoming wedding days, this week’s mid-week musings focus on wedding day décor – namely, fun things you can do to create talking points at your wedding while adding hints of pretty and wow at the same time.

So, we start this week by looking into the happy ever after…

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly way to add some colour to your wedding day, then this is right up there. Pinwheel fans are easy to make and can be tailored in terms of colour and size to suit your tastes and your wedding colour scheme. This version creates the perfect backdrop for photography but it could be used anywhere to add a bold focal point e.g. cake table, guest book table…the list is endless.

If you are a regular reader of the blog, you will know that we are in love with hanging floral decorations – whatever the type, size and colour of the flower. While they can be quite fiddly to make (leave it to the professionals!), they are big impact and create serious wow at any wedding.

Firstly, huge apologies for not posting last week…there is no excuse other than to say that as May creeps up on us, we are heading into a seriously busy period of planning, and as such our blogging habits are taking a bit of a backseat. However, we’re back today with a weekly dose of pretty and we’re bringing you four beautiful bits of wedding day inspiration from around the world wide web.

So, to kick things off…

There are two things which we love about this image…firstly, the ceremony set-up. It is becoming more and more common for couples to veer away from the traditional theatre style seating at weddings and we are starting to see more unusual seating patterns – from ceremonies in the round, to seating such as this, whereby guests face into the aisle and therefore get prime viewing as the bride makes her entrance. We also love the simple but effective aisle decor. It is not uncommon to see candles and heavy petalling adorn an aisle-way but this is a really beautiful idea which sees the aisle lined with mason jars full of bold and beautiful blooms.

We are becoming increasingly obsessed with fun furniture here at Just Bespoke HQ – maybe it is because we’ve been doing a lot of furniture research in the last couple of weeks! However, we love this idea for an intimate wedding breakfast – creating some colour by using mis-matched multi-hued chairs for guests to sit on. This could be used for the main meal or if you are having a large number of guests and budgets are limited, you could create outdoor seating areas during for guests to use during the drinks reception applying the same principles. It is a really eye-catching decor idea and very easy to execute.

When we saw this wedding it shouted out to us…we love the bright acidic hues complemented with the sultry and earthy tones of the bride’s floral crown. In fact, everything about this colour palette and the bride’s and bridesmaids’ styling is really stunning. This would be perfect for a relaxed but stylish summer wedding.

And finally…our favourite find of the week! Wildflower ice cubes…need we say more?! These would fit nicely with a summer garden party, an outdoor wedding, or just as a cute surprise for dinner party guests. Simple to make, beautiful to look at, and a real talking point! We will definitely be making some of these over the summer months!
