Today’s featured iPhone artist is P.M. Allen, a Boston artist who does freehand sketches on the iPhone and is fresh off a gallery showing that was mentioned in the Boston Globe.

The image above is titled ‘Galway House’. I like the colors and the feel of a typical neighborhood Irish bar.

Allen works with the Brushes app to produce his iPhone sketches.

Inspire Pro – the popular and acclaimed iPad painting app – is on sale for Mother’s Day. Just for today, May 8th, it is down from $7.99 to just $0.99. Here’s a little slice of its App Store description on what makes it unique:

SketchBook Pro for iPad – Autodesk’s popular, award winning painting and drawing application for iPad – has had a huge update this week, to Version 2.0.

This already feature-rich app has added a slew of powerful new features including UI customization capabilities, additional brushes, additional brush properties, special new features for the iPad 2, Dropbox support, and lots more.

Alongside this major update, the app has also had a substantial price drop – from $7.77 to just $4.99. There’s nothing stated on this, but I have to imagine this is a short-term sale to mark the new update.

This week painting and drawing apps have got one of the banner spots in the Featured area of the iPad App Store. Clicking through to the page full of showcased apps reveals some of the leading names in this arena – apps like Brushes – iPad Edition, ArtStudio for iPad, ArtRage, Layers, Inkpad, and a number of others.

There are also a few odd choices, for instance the Penultimate handwriting app.

Although these ‘mini’ featured sections don’t generally last long in the main featured area of the App Store, I like that Apple does them – as it helps some good apps get some extra exposure and it helps users on the lookout for new and interesting apps.

iPad Art came to my hometown of Austin last month, during the SXSW festivals. The Art from the iPad exhibition was held at the lovely Austin Details gallery in the heart of downtown. The gallery is run by my friend Jann Alexander, creator of the wonderful ‘Vanishing Austin’ series – and yet somehow I didn’t manage to get to see the Art from the iPad exhibition. I wanted to very much but it happened right around my daughter’s birthday, family visits from out of town, and a very hectic time at work.

I’m hoping Jann and Austin Details will run it again next year, as it looks like it was a great event. It featured lots of my favorite iPad and iPhone artists.

Steve John is an old favorite iPhone artist of ours. It’s been a while since we featured his work here. Too long. So I’m glad to be sharing a couple of his iPhone artworks today.

The image above is titled ‘Pandemonium’. That’s normally a word with negative connotations – but the image feels somehow happy to me. It still conveys a sense of pandemonium as it’s traditionally thought of, but it’s the sort of pandemonium I’d like to join right in on.

ArtStudio and ArtStudio for iPad – the stellar painting apps from Lucky Clan – have been updated this week, to Version 3.2.

Here’s the list of changes for the iPad app (the iPhone list is nearly identical):

- INCREASED MAX CANVAS SIZE FOR iPad 2: 2048×2048 pixels
- IMPROVED QUALITY OF ALL BRUSHES
- added few new brush stamps in "DOTS" tool
- added hard/medium/soft selector to all brushes
- added slider "jitter rotation" – great for creating textures from "Dots" brushes
- add loading directly from clipboard
- added feature "open file in ArtStudio" – app supporting "Open in" will show ArtStudio for jpg and png images
- fixed importing images with transparency
- fixed preserve transaprency in gradient fill
- optimized and more stable bucket filling in smart mode
- few other bugs fixed

What a gorgeous image.

It’s titled simply ‘Just a Bird’ and it was created by Darlene Twitchell using the Procreate app on iPad. Here’s a little more background on it from the artist herslef:

My friend Kathy announced yesterday on Facebook that it was Draw a Bird Day in the UK yesterday. So, I drew a bird. This is from a photo I took of a bird which landed on a branch outside my office window. I usually miss getting a photo of the vibrantly colored ones so I was happy to catch this guy.

Darlene is an accomplished artist and graphic designer who has just started painting on the iPad  – and loves it. She was kind enough to email me and tell me about her first few artworks on the iPad.

Such a clever and fun video. Especially once you hear how it was done by Shawn Harris, aka Maniac:

I illustrated this video for "Thank Each Mistake" using the Brushes app for iPad. I heard about it through Jorge Colombo’s New Yorker covers, but for me, the best media for this technique wasn’t print, but video! By taking advantage of the actions playback feature, and by using a brushes viewer application for my Mac, I found I could export my painting as a quicktime movie. The app isn’t designed for animation, but the playback feature, which records each brush-stroke as a separate frame, lends itself to a coarse morphy style of stop-motion fingerpainting, if you can manage to be deliberate enough about not lifting your finger from the painting… Thanks also to BLU, whose wall animations helped inspire the technique.

Great stuff.

I posted a week ago about the new InkPad vector drawing app for the iPad. Today I see that some of my favorite iArtists have already been getting some good use out of the new app.

Above is an image titled ‘José Buenaventura Durruti 1896-1936’ and it is by Joseandrés Guijarro, aka la legra negra. This one leaped off the page at me and I did not expect to see InkPad as the app it was created with. Not sure why, I guess the vector drawing term throws me off a little.

I love The Beautiful Game, football – or soccer if you insist. And I really love this image of one of the world’s greatest ever exponents of the beautiful game – Lionel Messi, of Argentina and Barcelona. It’s by Peter Schachter, and I’m very glad that he approached me via email to share it.

Here is Peter’s brief Intro to the piece:

This is one of a series of 14 or so international football/soccer stars I’ve done in the past month. Lionel Messi, Argentinian FIFA player of the year, in his Barcelona kit. I use the application Spray Can developed by rapidrabbit. There is no zoom and a limited palette of 11 colors. Done by fingertip on a standard iPhone.

Here’s my favorite part of Peter’s approach:

I have completed nearly 100 pieces since late December 2010…and have been reborn by this app and the process of creating on my phone.

That’s just great to hear.

I’m a big fan of the Best App Ever Awards. They aim to recognize apps for excellence, not sales numbers – and they do a great job at it. So I always find it a very impressive note on an app’s resume if it wins one of these awards. The two winners in the Best Artistic App look like very worthy choices.

Hipstamatic won in the iPhone division and SketchBook Pro was the iPad division winner. Runners up were Style Studio: Fashion Designer and ArtStudio for iPad, respectively.

SketchBook Mobile also got an honorable mention in the iPhone division, as did Brushes.

This is an instant favorite for me. It’s titled simply iPad Portrait of Steve Wozniak at Work Today, and it was done by an iPad portrait master, David Newman.

How cool is that? A superb portrait of one of Apple’s founders, at work and using Apple devices, created entirely on one of Apple’s latest marvels. Here’s just a little more on it, from David’s description of the Flickr stream entry for it:

Who doesn’t love a good bartender. Someone who knows your drink and just how you like it. Someone to chat to about all of the world’s (or sometimes your own) troubles. Someone who can make a great mojito.  The Barkeeper is a tribute to just such a fellow.

It’s by Simone Kirtschning and was done with the Brushes app.

The friendly Keeper of an amazing bar made me a great mojito,
so I have to paint him!

We’ve featured one of Kyle Lambert’s portraits done on his iPad a couple months back. Above is a video of another of his incredible series of finger painted portraits – this time the actor Will Smith  is featured.

Wow. Just wow. I only just featured the work of Yoshiyuki Uchida a few days ago, so generally I would not return to it so soon – but when I caught a glimpse of this image I just could not resist.  The colors and the reflections of them in the water are just spectacular, magical to me. The bird seems dignified and powerful in the middle of it all.

It is called ‘Autumn Tints’ and was done with the Brushes app on the iPad.

We featured Rita Flores’ iPhone art a little over a year ago. Today I’m very happy to share some of her  iPad painting work.

The image above is ‘FGT! Haffenstrasse, Copenhagen’. It was done with Brushes on iPad. I visited Copenhagen once with my dad. I don’t remember this place, but I do remember it being a lovely city. In any case, I love images of striking spots by the water almost as much as I love the places themselves.

This image is titled ‘Red’ and is by Janet Vanderhoof. It was done on an iPad with the Brushes app.

I love all the different shades of red there are in the image – from the background to the lips and varying shades in the woman’s hair.

Wow. Yoshiyuki Uchida’s artwork done on the iPad and the iPhone is beautiful and impressive right off the bat. When you then learn that Yoshiyuki is an over-50 year old businessman in Tokyo who had ‘no idea’ of painting seriously until six months ago the work is all the more amazing.

I have just started painting seriously since last month,May.2010. I found that painting is so enjoyable after finishing the paint with Brushes on iPhon

David Hockney has an exhibition running in Paris titled ‘Fleurs Fraiches’ (fresh flowers) – featuring floral images he has created on the iPhone and iPad. Better still, the pieces are being displayed not on canvas, but on more than a dozen iPads.

The BBC has a wonderful report up on the new show, and on Hockney’s fascination with the iPhone and iPad as his new digital canvas.  There are lots of fascinating points in the article, but here are just a few that stood out for me:
