I’m way overdue on posting this.  Our good friend David Scott Leibowitz let me know about this weeks ago and I just haven’t had a chance to get to it.  In fact, I’m way behind on posting here generally – and I’m hoping to correct that starting today.

Anyway – the good news that David shared with me is that the whole iPhone art movement got some great coverage in a premier printed magazine about art – ART News magazine.  The feature is shown in the scan above.

Boy I love this image.  It is called Christmas doggy, and is by Luis Peso.

I’m a huge dog lover and this one feels festive as hell to me – especially since I own a big lovable white Labrador who outweighs this little guy by around 100 pounds and will not wear a hat for us

For my money, nothing says festive like Labradors and Christmas hats!

It’s Christmas Eve and I’m feeling very much in the holiday spirit, looking forward to family visiting our house soon, and in the mood to enjoy  holiday imagery created on the iPhone.

This is the first image that grabbed my attention when I began browsing some of my favorite Flickr streams.  It is called Oh Christmas Tree and is the work of Susan Murtaugh, one of the excellent editors of the great fingerpainted.it site.

We have featured some of Dave’s great iPhone artwork in the past, and this one caught my eye several weeks back.  I’ve been meaning to post about it ever since I first saw it. 

This reminds me instantly of the view we enjoyed at my wife’s parent’s lake house up on Lake Worth.  Lovely, sort of elegant bird.

We’ve featured Steve John’s wonderful iPhone artwork and photography here before, and for as long as he is happy sharing it I am sure we will continue to do so often in future.

Today I just had to share his series of photographs titles ‘Surreal Buildings of Bath’.  Here is Steve’s brief intro to this set:

This series of Photographs were taken on an iPhone 2G around the beginning of Summer.  The buildings can all be found in the City of Bath, UK but not exactly as you see them here.  They have all been modified (inPhone) in some way using a mixture of the following apps: Brushes – Juxtaposer – PhotoFx.

I think there are many reasons why a piece of art may hit home for me.  Sometimes it is the overall power of an image, sometimes it is just the colors, sometimes it is that an image takes me somewhere – to a well-remembered place from the past or even a never-visited place I’d love to go.

Sally Ann La Main’s iPhone artworks do quite a bit of all of that for me.  The image above, for instance, hits me because of its striking colors and kind of quiet beauty – but also takes me back to harsh winters in the North East when I was growing up.

What a powerful, haunting image.  It’s called Turning Blue and it’s by Kara Jansson Kovasev, who was kind enough to contact us via our site contact form and point us in the direction of her iPhone drawings.

Many of her iPhone artworks are quite striking and haunting, but this is my current favorite.

I don’t even know where this place is (OK I do now because I cheated and Googled it), but as Tina Fey would say ‘I want to go to there’.  Really enjoy the colors on this image.

It’s by Russ Croop, who is a professional photographer, and only does this iPhone art stuff as a sort of sideline hobby.  In other words, way too many talents – we hate him

I first spotted this image in the excellent iCreated app, from our friend David Scott Leibowitz. I like the colors and the feeling that there’s lots to discover within it – oh, and of course the tiger.  Who doesn’t like tigers?

I also very much like the poem that Blue Sky Day lists as the inspiration for this piece – here’s just a little slice of it:

Now the doors are all open, the air is mother-of-pearl, and you know the way to tame a tiger. It will not elude you today for you have grabbed a brush, you have dipped it almost at random, so high is your rage, into the amalgam of color, formless on a docile palette.

Over the last several months I’ve been continually astounded at the wonderful art being produced on iPhones, and have been discovering more and more amazingly talented artists who are embracing the medium.  One of my top, top favorites is la legra negra, or José Andrés Guijarro Ponce.

The image above is just one recent example of the many, many iPhone works of his that I love.  This one has caught my attention because the image itself is striking, and also because José Andrés has provided a brilliant four-step tutorial on how he produced it.

It’s Happy Hour, a 3-for-1 special on this one – as I’m a huge basketball fan, a big fan of Pau Gasol, and an admirer of the iPhone art of José Andrés Guijarro Ponce.

The image is based on this photo of Gasol in action for the Lakers against the Dallas Mavericks.  Nice to see the transformation from NBA to national team – and I’ve enjoyed watching Gasol’s talent and intelligence on the court in both those uniforms.

Inspired by an mix: George Dmitriev, moon and sea, 2005 & Ivan Aivazovski, the ninth wave, 1850

That’s the brief description provided by the artist, Fernando López del Hierro, for this stunning piece.  I have to admit, I have no clue who either of the folks mentioned are, but I just cannot take my eyes off this image and find it immensely powerful.

I spotted this image originally in the wonderful iCreated app and it hit me like a ton of bricks.  Just an epic and powerful feeling image.  Each time I’ve gone back to admire it in iCreated or on Flickr, it’s struck me the same way.

Here’s a really (really) stunningly cool shot of an American flag, the first in a series of shots at the airport by photographer Dewitt Jones. There are a few more pictures in the series, all of them manipulated and edited on the iPhone. The mini photo series is posted on a blog Dewitt shares with his wife, and most of the posts there are from their or their friends’ iPhones. The try to show how the pictures developed and what apps and tools they used to tweak the images.

It’s definitely worth a look for more  of their photos, and you might just discover some new photo apps along the way (I know I did).

This is one of those strange cases where I can say I liked the painting more than the movie (tee hee). Paul created this painting with the Brushes app, and I think it’s a great little piece. I love the play on words, but I’m also just really impressed by the detail and lettering. It really would make a great poster for the Futurama version of the movie

I’ve been meaning to post this one for ages – glad to finally get a chance.  I found out about this one via our good friend David Scott Leibowitz, via email. 

David let me know that this piece – titled simply ‘Typhoon Night in Taiwan’, was done right in the middle of that tragic event, by Yan Min Lee.  What a beautiful and powerful image – and all the more so knowing the photo was taken ‘live’ at the scene.  The image was also filtered with the Camerabag app.

Brushes – the incredible painting application for the iPhone – has been updated, to Version 2.0.  The big headline new feature is the addition of layers.  Here’s a little more detail on what’s new in this update:

Layers. Brushes now supports up to 4 layers. You can import multiple photos, adjust layer opacity, merge, reorder layers, and copy and paste them between paintings.  Enhanced Brush panel. Toggle between brush mode and erase mode. Adjust paint opacity within the brush panel. Enhanced zooming. Zoom in up to 1600%. Double tap to quickly toggle between 100% and your preferred zoom level. – Stability improvements. Fixes crashes that could occur on iPhone OS 3.0.

Somebody give this guy a hand!

And now for something completely different: the undead — who knew they could be so lovably cute?! If this is really how Evil looks, then it’s welcome to be a Resident on my computer (oh, god).

This is a pic from TooManyZombies.com. The artist’s bio is written in Zombienese, which really just looks like a lot of “uuuuuuurgh” and “aauuuuuuuuugh” to me. A quick google search showed that the artist seems to go by the name Dogg Thang, but I couldn’t get any more than that.

In any case, “Too Many Zombies” is definitely worth a look. The zombies are drawn at a rate of one per day using a finger and the Layers app and they each have hilarious little back stories. Did I mention how cute they look?
