Some of us fight to stay in them while others fight to break out. I'd like to think I kinda ride in the middle most of the time though I will say that I'm a big fan of my mine. I like to push through my boundaries but I also enjoy the safety of knowing and preparing contingencies. Really I think it's a control thing. I like control. I like being in control. I don't like being told what to do. I like to make my own way, my own rules, in and out of my comfort zone. Where was I going with this? Oh, yeah...my comfort zone. To be honest, I think I've lived most of my life nicely tucked away in my comfort zone. That was until I met Steve.</p> <p>He tossed me right out of my comfort zone in that he represented everything that my life wasn't at the time. He was carefree. I was pretty staunch about structure. He was messy. I was a neat freak. He cared little about money. I was fighting like holy hell to hold onto what little I had. What happened? Love, deep crazy, what you see in romantic comedies kinda love forced me to leap out of my comfort zone and into life without a safety net. Ooo, scarewy monsters!</p> <p>It was exciting to live that way, marry and build a life together. But I learned that for me I can't live on either side of the fence, I have to straddle. Most days I am rather content in my comfy comfort zone and other times I itch to go beyond my boundaries, and I'm learning that that is okay...for me.</p> <p>I will say though that the best thing that came from living without a safety net is that I learned how to bounce. Yup, living without a safety net does not mean that you are immune to falling. You know the articles in those "make me feel better about being a soon to be middle-aged woman" magazines always imply that when you give up the safety net somehow you're more inclined not to fall because you know you'll break your neck if you do. Wrong. Giving up the safety net does not guarantee that you will not fall. You will. In some form or fashion. The trick is what to do when that happens. For me, I bounce. On the tight rope, off the tight rope, on the tight rope, off the tight rope. I seem to hit the bottom and bounce back. Or I'm carried on the wings of the angels that guard and protect me. It's Thanksgiving Day. I don't subscribe much to the whole "give thanks to the Pilgrims" deal, though I am thankful for the trails they blazed. For me it's more about taking time to slow down and reflect on your life and those in it. I'm doing that as I write this, laying under a tree watching the beautiful blue sky, feeling warm sun on my face and appreciating the breeze blowing by. Today is a good day. Slept in until about 10a, had coffee in my usual place...lounge chaise by the window and enjoyed a very yummy cherry turnover courtesy the Publix bakery. Got dinner started in the crock pot and looking forward to the orange glazed smoked ham, mashed sweet potatoes, dressing with gravy, mac & cheese, corn bread and sweet potatoe pie. This will be my first "Thanksgiving" alone and I'm pretty excited about it. Could be just that I'm excited that I'm finally taking some much needed down time and time to be with me. See!  Dumbin' Down.  It's real people, I couldn't make this stuff up.</p> <p><iframe allowfullscreen="true" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ls271bArj30?rel=0" frameborder="0" height="390" width="480"></iframe></p> </p> <p><a href="http://justjaszy.posterous.com/i-might-be-dumber-than-you-think">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://justjaszy.posterous.com/i-might-be-dumber-than-you-think#comment">Leave a comment  »</a> </p><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/JustJaszythatsAll/~4/czVRDgda1m8" height="1" width="1"/> http://files.posterous.com/user_profile_pics/1432176/jaszy_by_jenny.jpg http://posterous.com/users/4akYDv0U4oBH Jaszy McAllister Ms Jaszy Jaszy McAllister http://justjaszy.posterous.com/i-might-be-dumber-than-you-think Wed, 31 Aug 2011 21:01:00 -0700 Thoughts on the homeless in SRQ http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/JustJaszythatsAll/~3/eQmaBJCedS8/thoughts-on-the-homeless-in-srq-62632 http://justjaszy.posterous.com/thoughts-on-the-homeless-in-srq-62632 <p> <p>For many of you who know me this topic will come as no surprise, for those of you who don't know...recently my ex-husband decided to become voluntarily domicile-free.  We've not really made an official announcement of our separation/divorce nor made any comments about the reasons why it happened and well, I'm going to continue that tradition...</p> <p>Needless to say, the subject of Steve's decision has come up quite often with a few folks, but it wasn't until recently that I felt a need to respond in some manner.  Not too long ago a mutual friend of ours, not really a friend...an acquaintance really, decided he would give me his "opinion" about Steve's lifestyle choice.  Well, sharing one's opinion is all fine and good, but this particular person "assumed" that I wasn't okay with it or that the whole ordeal somehow had something to do with our break up.  Yeah, he was sadly mistaken.  To be honest I was offended by his assumption, I was even more offended that he "assumed" I wasn't okay with it all and needed him to take my side or something.  He expressed HIS disappointment over what Steve was doing with his life.  Looka here see...I'm not affected, offended, dismayed, distraught or anything else he "assumed" I was or thought I should be.  My words to him were that every person on this planet is capable of finding bliss in his/her circumstance no matter how we on the outside "decide" to view the choices they make.  What we may "decide" to see as failure may be a blinding success to the person who's opinion it really matters.  I told him that from everything I've heard and from what I know after spending nearly five years with Steve, he is exactly where he wants to be and is finding his bliss.  Whether or not I agree with his decision really is of no consequence, it really only matters to him.  Now, don't get me wrong.  There are ocassions when I worry about his well-being and physical safety but I know that I have no control, nor should I even try to have an influence in the destiny he had chosen for himself.  And that's all I have to say about that...</p> <p>So, I suppose then it begs the question...How do I feel about our homeless situation in SRQ?  I'm gonna be honest here.  I can honestly say that I don't have much more to offer than most everyone else.  Where people want to see a problem, well...they will.  I don't see our homeless situation as a problem, I see it as an opportunity to show some compassion.  They removed the benches from 5 Points Park and the bus stations.  Yeah, so I do think that was extremely idiotic considering that other people use the benches, especially the ones at the bus stops.  I was telling my dear friend KT today that I remember when I first moved to SRQ there was talk of some rich guy who wanted to transform a warehouse out near 301 into a homeless shelter but the city said no.  How true this is, I really don't remember.  But let's say there's some truth to it.  Would the city really deny such a thing?  Wouldn't a shelter away from downtown help keep the precious parks free of the downtrodden and domicile-free?  Look, I've not been a part of the city or county talks.  I don't know what plans, if any, there are for programs to help our neighbors that don't have a place of their own to call home.  I do know that whatever Big Brother decides to do for the betterment of its citizens, it ain't gonna happen overnight.  So, I recommend showing a bit of compassion and patience with and during the process.  Now, how you decide to do that is entirely up to you.  Whether that's simply giving recognition to the guy/gal you may find "residing" in the park as being a real life human being, buying him/her a sandwich or maybe dishing out a bit of spare change to 'em...well, that's your call.</p> <p>Perhaps you think me a bit naive in my suggestion, well consider this...</p> <p>Many, many years ago, 1994 to be exact, I was living in Bellevue, WA.  I had just graduated college and had just moved into my apartment when I happened upon a young man at the gym near where I lived.  His name was Wendell.  He was a very soft spoken guy, (I found out later that he was a black belt in Karate!)  Anywho...Wendell was living in one of the back rooms of the gym.  He was homeless.  But his story was something to say the least.  It's kinda long, so get comfortable.  Wendell was an orphan.  He and his brother had been in and out of foster homes for most of his childhood.  At some point they were separated and Wendell vowed that one day he would find him.  And he did just that traveling from GA to WA using what little cash he had.  When he arrived in WA he found his brother but sadly his brother turned out to be a jerk refusing to take him in and well, that's how he came to be homeless.  But wait, there's more...At some point along his travels Wendell was in a car accident and one of those TV attorneys got wind of his case and yada yada yada...</p> <p>When I met Wendell and heard his story, I was moved even though it sounded far fetched and of course there was a chance he was full of balarky about one day coming into a large amount of money when "his case settled".  I sensed his kind heart and offered him my sofa.  I don't remember exactly how long Wendell stayed with me but during that time he took an interest in my little brother and started kinda mentoring him and being a male figure in his life.  He really was a kind guy.</p> <p>Some time later, yup, you guessed it...he did come into a large sum of money once his case settled and the sweetheart he was, insisted that I take "back rent" for the time he was with me.</p> <p>What's the moral of my story?
