Holocene

Overwhelmed with emotion.

Such a big fan of this guy and his records and, in this brilliant performance, the band replicates that perfectly.

Hooray for real music making a comeback! Hooray that there are still artists out there brave enough not to care about fitting into the radio format and yet still making it onto mainstream media platforms.

All is not lost… Happy Monday everyone. I hope this inspires your week.

Paranoid Android

What we have here is a Magnum Opus.

Not just their (arguably) crowning achievement but one of Music’s, in general.

As an artist, knowing that you might be compared to great works such as this one, is unnerving. Luckily, music isn’t a race. It doesn’t have to be ‘better’, it just has to be different… Even though we secretly strive to be ‘better’. Such is a musician’s ego.

We all bow to these guys. And rightly so. Magnificent!

Pras Michel

In 2005, I was asked to be in the music video for an artist called Pras (known as a member of the FUGEES, and hits like ‘Ghetto Superstar’)

If you have never heard the song, you will immediately recognize the ‘sample’ and inspiration behind the song. *Think U2*

As it turns out, it’s a perfect, uplifting song to kick out the Monday blues. Play it around the home and office. Shoot, play it everywhere!

It was a fun experience and a snapshot of the time we spent in Los Angeles. See if you can recognize the bassist…

Steely Dan

This is just too good. Another level of musicianship!

I remember listening to the Steely Dan ‘Royal Scam’ LP for the 1st time. I was going through my dad’s collection one afternoon after school and saw this creepy looking album cover. I was still a young boy and almost too scared to hear what it was. This song was the opening track and I could not believe what I was listening to. The melodies over those chord changes… never mind the (almost impossibly human) rhythm section of Bernard Purdie and Chuck Rainey laying down the sickest groove.

This is a recent recording but still holds true to the original. Enjoy!

Ps. Happy Friday 13th gang!

Arcade Fire

I am truly grateful that (if only at very least) once in a lifetime, a band like Arcade Fire comes along.

Bold, daring, mystical. A beautiful noise made through controlled chaos. Not paying attention to anything but making important music… in a age made up of mostly disposable art.

This is off their new album. We listened to it in our bus during this weekend’s coastal tour. What a soundtrack to life!

Radiohead

We had a great show tonight and now I’m chilling in my hotel room in Durban @ 3.51am, in a trance. Listening to tunes to help unwind but I can’t switch my thought process off. We have been doing a few back-to-back theatre shows around the country and every night has been unique and special.

Layering a song/idea is an art form. From birth to radio, the options are infinite. Today’s pick is a fine example of throwing unconventional parts into a pot and cooking them into a frenzy. Everything about this track is mesmerizing and unnerving… perfect for my insomnia!

Scientists at work. Watch how they just stay in their individual worlds, focusing, plotting, delivering… Radiohead. Stellar!

ps. the constant wave of tension that builds from the beginning, crashes gloriously @ 4.06 mins, sustains for 30 secs and then it’s gone… leaving you wanting more.

This is recommended as a late night, headphone experience.

The Black Keys

Been on a minimalistic tip recently. Maybe it has to do with the 3 of us in studio, trying to create a sound we haven’t created before or maybe it’s just plain musical maturity. Just been enjoying getting back to the roots of it all. Doing a lot with a little.

I’m really enjoying these 2 guys. The Black Keys. This video gives a sneak peak into their world and how they create their sound, which is bluesy, grimy and hypnotic.

This particular song also holds weight with me. Not your typical love song. It’s dark, desperate and honest. I doubt anyone can put that feeling on paper or give a vocal delivery like this without living it.

Real deal stuff!

Bon Iver

How do you do?

It’s a cold winter’s day here in Johannesburg. In keeping with the search for stylistic inspiration for our next album, I decided to post this performance of one of my favourite arists/bands, Bon Iver. Most of the material was written and recorded in bitterly cold climate yet has a coziness to it.

This is a great example of how a well structured song, sung by a charismatic voice, sometimes needs very little else to thrive. Enjoy!

Kasabian

How do, to you!

So, with it being world cup fever here in S.Africa, it seems fitting to feature a video by an international act shot here on our soil… 150km’s outside of Cape Town.

I’ve been a Kasabian fan since day 1 and this new record gives me no reason to feel otherwise. They blend elecro-rock with an old school, retro shimmer and the tones vary from glossy to obnoxious. Perfect! Definitely something we’ll be experimenting with on our forthcoming album.

Thank you for tuning in and always remember to keep it real. I’m watching you…

Them Crooked Vultures

Hi there, faithful Jinjers!

This is personally my 1st blog on our new official page so I thought I’d let you know what I’m up to, with regards to all things Jinjer.

We are gearing up to go in and record our next full length album, starting around June. With us being a trio now, I’ve been doing quite a bit of research regarding 3 piece band recording techniques, etc. I won’t bore you with the details (or give away our secrets just yet) but I will add a little video of the most exciting trio around at the moment. They are ‘Them Crooked Vultures’ and they’re basically a super group comprised of rock legends. I’ll let you research further if you into it… I recommend it!

So there you have it, I hope you enjoy it and I’ll be popping in ever so often to provide new bits and bobs of inspiration!

Ciao for now,
