Most lawn problems can be solved by the selection of the right grass seed, regular mowing, fertilisation, watering and scarifying. Today we go over some of the most common problems you may encounter with your lawn.

Weeds

Weeds may impair the appearance and use of your lawn. Common weeds include thistle and dandelion. As they are unable to withstand frequent mowing, this is one way of reducing them. The most environmentally friendly form of weed removal is by digging them out. If the lawn has bare patches, weeds are likely to take root, so resow these regularly. In contrast, weeds do not stand much chance on a healthy, well-cared for lawn.

Weeding tips

Use a hoe only on sunny days when the soil is dry. Otherwise some disturbed weedlings may irritatingly re-root and go on growing.

Fine-rooted weeds often snap off in your hand. To ease out the entire plant, grab the top growth with one hand and prise up the roots with a fork.

Don’t compost annual weeds. Some (such as chickweed and hairy bittercress) already carry ripening seeds.

If you let your weeds go to seed one year, you will be weeding for the next seven. That’s how long the seeds can linger. Make sure you never let them go to seed!

Moss

Moss does not drive out the grass, but establishes itself when grass no longer grows. Moss herbicide is therefore not a solution. Moss benefits from lawns that are cut too short and by weakened grass. Improvements can be made by raising the cutting height and through good fertilisation. If you have a lot of moss and it look like it is taking hold of your lawn, then you must take a more long terms approach. This long term approach includes a schedule of targeted fertilisation including soil improvement and resowing with a good grass seed mixture. The soil under a moss-infested area if often too acidic (arising from water-logged soil, with an absence of air). Good drainage is necessary as just spreading lime will not remove the moss.

Moss removal (information originally supplied by the Royal Horticultural Soceity)

Remove loose moss in autumn, by scarification (vigorous raking). On small lawns this can be done by hand, raking out the moss with a spring-tine rake, but on larger lawns mechanical scarifiers can be used.

For moss control use a proprietary product, such as those based on ferrous sulphate (sulphate of iron) in spring or early autumn. When the moss blackens after two or three weeks use a spring-tine rake to remove it. The dead moss can be added to the compost heap. The ready-to-use formulations of ferrous sulphate can be used to spot treat small patches of moss on lawns.

Mosskillers combined with a fertiliser (nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium, indicated by the abbreviations NPK) are beneficial where grass vigour is low.

Apply mosskillers either by hand or with a push-along spreader. Be careful not to apply lawn sand (ferrous sulphate mixed with a carrier) at too high a rate as this can blacken and kill the grass as well as the moss. Apply lawn mosskillers in fine weather. Some require watering after 48 hours if there has been no rain. Check pack for details.

Control with a mosskiller will only be temporary unless the conditions which allowed the moss to become established are improved.

Patio Magic (containing benzalkonium chloride) will control moss on artificial turf. Keep artificial turf in good condition by regular brushing. Ensure water is not allowed to pool on the surface.

Fungal diseases

There are many fungi that can infect the lawn, but only a few are really damaging (an example being snow mould). This mould develops while the lawn is covered in snow and little air is able to circulate, letting the disease thrive. Fungi spread is due to some of these conditions being present:

Very dense grass

Thick lawn thatch

High humidity

Too low or too high pH values

Over fertilisation

Leaf/litter covering

Snow covering in winter

Fungus can usually be stopped in its tracks with a fungicide treatment and lawn aeration, which allows the soil to breathe. Aerating the lawn (or scarifying) is the process of removing dead material or thatch using a lawn scarifier , which also aerates and loosens up the turf. Scarifying is the vertical cutting or scoring of soil and grass roots, which ensures improved aeration of the soil, with lawn thatch and weeds being removed. A lawn which is scarified once or twice a year shows improved growth, is healthier and has a more attractive appearance.

Lawn mowers can be dangerous and can cause serious injury if not used properly. Become familiar with the mower you intend to use and use good judgement and be safety-minded. Below are some safety guidelines we have put together to ensure you finish any mowing job safely. Have a great summer and “Happy mowing!”

Safety Guidelines

» Read the operator’s manual for safety instructions. Do make sure you follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions.

» Pick up all debris (stigs, stones, garden toys etc) before each mowing.

» Keep children and pets a safe distance away from lawn mowers. Before beginning to mow, send children and pets inside with an adult or older brother/sister. A fast moving mower blade can throw objects at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour or 100m in 1 second!

» Keep feet and hands away from blades when starting and running engine.

» Wear sturdy shoes and long trousers. Clothing protects the mower operator from thrown objects such as stones and other garden debris. Earplugs protect hearing from the loud noise that an engine can make. Safety glasses or goggles protect the eyes from dust, dirt and small rocks thrown out by the blade and the engine-cooling fan. Never wear anything that can be caught in the machine such as loose clothing or jewelery. Always tie back long hair.

» Be careful when working with petrol. Petrol can be extremely explosive! Fires can occur when re-filling a mower that is hot or still running. Never smoke around petrol. Try not to spill any petrol when filling. Always use a spout when filling to avoid spills. And never store petrol in a home or a utility building, especially near gas hot water heaters.

» Operate the lawn mower at a safe speed of travel and always push mower rather than pull it toward you. When using a riding mower only operate up and down steep slopes to reduce the chance of the mower overturning. A riding mower may overturn if it begins spinning on the uphill side of a slope. If the uphill mower wheel spins when going across a slope, stop or turn down the slope immediately.

» Watch your footing on steep slopes and wet grass.

» Don’t leave a running engine unattended.

» Refuel the engine only when it is shut off and cool.

» Wear goggles when operating line trimmers, brushcutters and power edgers.

» Stop engine and disconnect spark plug wire before working on engine or blade.

» Keep the mower in good repair and adjustment.

» Never let someone else ride with you when operating a riding mower. This could be very dangerous. Each year, injuries and even deaths occur because children ride as passengers on riding mowers, small tractors, and other machinery. A few minutes of fun riding is not worth the risk of injury or even death.

» And finally always leave your mower in a safe place away from children. It is extremely important that you park the mower properly when the job is complete. Small children find lawnmowers fascinating and like to copy older brothers/sisters and parents. Children may start a mower may be unable to stop the mower before injuring themselves.

Todays post includes advice and tips about mowing your lawn. It contains important and useful tips concerning mower maintenance, mowing patterns, lawn mower operation and mower safety.

Todays post includes advice and tips about mowing your lawn. It contains important and useful tips concerning mower maintenance, mowing patterns, lawn mower operation and mower safety.

Keep the Mower Blade Sharp

A sharp blade is absolutely critical to a quality mowing job. Dull blades beat and tear the grass leaving frayed leaf tips which give a whitish cast to the lawn. A sharp blade cuts cleanly and easily, requiring less fuel. Sharp blades are especially important for tough-bladed grasses such as zoysiagrass, ryegrass and tall fescue. Inspect the blade after each mowing checking for sharpness and for the presence of nicks. The frequency with which the blade must be sharpened is obviously affected by the amount of mowing you do, but also by the grass species and by the presence of debris (e.g., rocks, sticks, etc.) in the lawn. It is a good idea to have an extra sharp blade on hand.

Mowing Pattern

It is a good idea to alternate mowing direction from one mowing to the next so that soil compaction and wear from the mower wheels will be more uniformly distributed over the lawn. Grass blades also tend to lean in the direction of mowing; this can be prevented by mowing in different directions. Establish several mowing patterns that result in as few turns as possible. This not only speeds up mowing time, but reduces damage to the turf from the turning mower wheels.

Mower Operation

Operate the mower at a safe speed (3 to 5 mph). This will cut the grass cleanly and thoroughly. Excessive speed leads to a poor cut. Slow down when making sharp turns to avoid damage to the turf. Make wide, gradual turns when possible. Keep the mower properly adjusted and watch for loose or broken parts. Check the engine oil level each time you mow. Change the oil and grease wheels, bearings, chains and shafts according to manufacturer’s recommendations. Air cleaners need frequent cleaning, especially when mowing in dusty conditions. Become thoroughly familiar with your mower by studying the operator’s manual. Clean dirt and grass from the mower housing immediately after mowing or it will become dry and hard to remove—a putty knife is handy for this purpose. Also, wash off the mower, but do not get water on a hot engine.

Be Careful When Mowing Around Trees

Bumping young and thin-barked trees with a lawnmower causes serious injury, especially if the tree is young or has thin bark. What seems like only a minor bruise can later enlarge into a deep wound

Safety

Power mowers can be dangerous and can cause serious injury if not used properly. Become familiar with the equipment, use good judgement and be safety minded. Always read the owners manual!

Which lawn mower is the right one for you? Choosing a new lawnmower can be a confusing process. Do you want a petrol or electric model? Do you want to recycle the grass clippings. Do you need electric start? If you have uneven ground or large areas, do you need self propelled? These questions and more are answered in this guide.

Which lawn mower is the right one for you?

Large or small?

The first and probably most obvious question to ask is ” How big is my lawn?”. Lighter, easy to handle lawnmower models are suitable for small to medium-sized lawns of up to 500m2. Self-propelled mowers with additional features and larger cutting widths are more suitable for larger lawns of up to 2,500m2. Any larger and you may want to consider a lawn tractor or garden rider.

Electric or petrol?

Another consideration is the whether you want a petrol or electric powered lawn mower. If your lawn is no larger than 500m2 and presents few obstacles for a cable, then you could choose an electric model. It also mows quietly and without exhaust emissions. Electric lawnmowers are therefore popular in towns and cities where noise pollution from a loud lawnmower might be an issue.

Ease of starting might also be a consideration when deciding between and electric or petrol powered lawnmmower. Consider if you have any wrist, elbow, shoulder, neck, back or heart problems. If you do, electric start is the way to go; most electric start mowers have a battery similar to your car.

Please note that if you choose petrol and if you have a steep hill that takes a fair amount of time to cut, you should purchase a mower with an overhead cam or overhead valve engine as this allows oil to be pumped through the engine at all times.

Grass Collection or mulching?

Mulching cuts and re-cuts grass clippings into very fine particles then, using positive air pressure created beneath the cutter deck, pushes the particles right down into the standing grass to wilt and decompose thereby feeding the soil.

With many lawn mowers you have the option of collecting the grass or mulching the grass or both! Dedicated mulching mowers, such as the STIGA Multi-Clip 50 Mulching Lawn Mower offer a dedicated mulching solution. This lawnmower mulches the clippings instead of collecting and will get the job done around 30% quicker than a conventional mower. Some lawnmowers offer complete versatility and offer collection, side discharge and mulching. These “3-in-1″ lawnmowers have become extremely popular over the past few years because you can choose to collect the clippings, cut and discharge or to recycle the clippings depending on your needs or desires. They give you a lot of flexibility, especially for leaf clean-up. Mulch up the leaves when they are nice and dry, put the bag on and suck them up! Your lawn will look like a freshly vacuumed carpet when you are finished.

Achieving a beautiful lawn

Mowing the lawn

Regular mowing makes a lawn dense and attractive. The cutting of grass stimulates the grass plant to form new side-shoots, leaf blades and runners, and weeds are effectively suppressed. The optimum cutting height is between 3.5 and 5cm so you should never aim to cut lower (in the shade). If the grass is cut shorter than the tolerance level of the grass, then the lawn will inevitably “thin out”. If the grass is very long a good idea would be to mow in several stages, never in a single cut. Depending on where you live, lawn characteristics, weathering etc, the lawn must be mown on average 20-25 times during its growing period mid April to late October, ie approximately once a week (depending on growth). Regular sharpening of the blades also ensures a better cutting pattern and makes the job easier.

Preparing to Mow

Before you mow, pick up objects lying on the lawn. Toys, tools, tires, car parts, cans, bottles, stones, sticks, twigs, and limbs are hazards to children playing on the lawn even when a mower is not operating. These items also present great danger to the operator, bystanders, and the mower when mowing begins.

The one-third rule of mowing

Along with mowing at the correct height, mowing with adequate frequency is crucial to producing a high quality, attractive lawn. The “one-third rule” is a guideline for deciding when to mow. Very simply, this rule says to never remove more than one-third of the canopy height at any one mowing. Failing to follow the one-third rule results in the removal of excessive leaf tissue, shocking the grass. The result will be a thin, stemmy turf with a poor root system. Further, mowing excessively tall grass is hard on the mower, takes more time, and produces an abundance of clippings that must be removed. Following the one-third rule means that you will not mow on a set time schedule. Mowing frequency will be determined by the growth rate of the grass, which varies with seasonal changes in the weather and with the amount of water and fertilizer applied. At certain times of the year, you may need to mow more often than once per week, and at other times, less. Additionally, the height of cut has a dramatic effect on mowing frequency. The shorter a lawn is maintained, the more often it must be mowed to follow the one-third rule.

Good luck!

A lawn is like a vast organism with far-reaching effects for us all. It is made up of a very many individual grass plants and is home to numerous creatures and microorganisms for which it provides a place to live and nourishment.

A grassed area makes a garden homely while also creating an impression of space, making your outside area look bigger!

A lawn is not just a lawn.

A wide variety of demands are placed upon turfed areas depending on their use. Different examples include home lawns, park lawn and grass on a sports field. Virtually no other plant is subjected to such high demands as lawn grasses are. They are continuously being stepped on, rolled on, played on, but must nevertheless remain pleasant to the eye.

Factors influencing a lawn.

Climate & Weathering
This includes temperature, water, light/shade, wind, snow and frost – all will affect your lawn in some way.

Grass types
There are very many different types of grasses, with over 100 varieties – different grasses for different purposes.

Care
Cutting, nourishing, watering, sanding, aerating, scarifying – all extremely important if you are going to keep a lawn healthy and good-looking.

Soil
Grain size, pH value, organic substance, compaction, drainage and nutrient contents

Damaging factors
Diseases, pests and competing plants

Choosing a lawn type.

Ornamental lawn
Choose a an ornamental lawn if you are going to use a lawn purely for decorative purposes. These lawns will be seldom walked on and will be made up of dense carpet-like turf of fine blade grasses with low resistance. If you don’t mind a little dwarf rye grass as part of the mixture then this makes it a fantastic looking lawn. Very high maintenance as regular mowing, scarifying/aeration and requires constant hand picking of invading ‘weed’ grasses to maintain the look. You will also need to spend a considerable amount on a high quality cylinder mower to keep the lawn looking in tip-top condition.

Utility or family lawn
A hardy universal lawn for virtually all areas around the house. Usually a predominantly rye grass seed or turf mixture for utility areas, play lawns, high use areas and for people who want their lawn care ‘as easy as possible’. The main advantage of this type of grass is that it is extremely tolerant of use and abuse from kids, dogs and summer BBQ parties!

Hard wearing lawn
This type of lawn is very hardy and can withstand heavy use, even in bad weather. The grass is resilient and has good regenerative features. Choose a hard wearing lawn if you are going to use if it is going to be used on playing fields and sports areas or as a tennis court in the back garden!

Next time I will be looking at vital seasonal care for your lawn. ie what you need to do to keep your lawn in pristine condition during Spring, Autumn, Summer and Winter.

Top-tip

Use a slow-release, granular lawn feed in Spring. This will give the lawn all the nutrients it needs through the growing season.

Stiga's Multiclip cutting system cuts and re-cuts grass clippings into very fine particles then, using positive air pressure created beneath the cutter deck, pushes the particles right down into the standing grass to wilt and decompose thereby feeding the soil.

In the garden of our dreams the grass spreads like a green carpet, lush tightly grown and well-cut. In real life the picture may appear somewhat different. What the text books tell us is that the difference lies in the nutrition, water and care. What it sometimes forgets to mention is the shortcut called Multiclip, well familiar to every earth-worm! What it boils down to is getting a more beautiful lawn with the very least of effort.

What is Multiclip?

Stiga’s Multiclip cutting system cuts and re-cuts grass clippings into very fine particles then, using positive air pressure created beneath the cutter deck, pushes the particles right down into the standing grass to wilt and decompose thereby feeding the soil. A policy of continuous improvement has resulted in the development of even more efficient blade and cutter deck designs.

It normally takes three steps to get a good result: cut and remove the cuttings, water and add nutrition. Stiga have simplified the process so that you cut and fertilize in one go. In the same action, water binds to the roots so that the lawn can go longer without watering. In only a couple of days, the grass cuttings are broken down and become natural fertilizer. Because you skip the collection stage cutting is easier and faster. Despite spending mininal time cutting your grass, you can compete with the neighbours for the best lawn on the block! The secret is Stiga’s mulching technology, Multiclip!

Five advantages of Multiclip:

Less watering: The finely cut clippings form a thing, moisture rich layer on your lawn which moisturizes the grass roots naturally and therefore needs less watering.

Leaves can also be mulched: With Multiclip the same thing can be done in the autumn to break down and leaf litter that is on your lawn. Simply magic them away!

Save time and money as you will not need to collect and transport or compost any grass clippings. and the job gets done in around 70% of the time.

Less fuel and emissions: fuel consumption and emissions fall by about 30% which benefits both the planet and your wallet.

The noise level is lower as there is no opening in the covers, unlike in a collector machine.

There are so many reasons to buy a Stiga Multiclip mulching lawn mower. to find out more or to view our range of Stiga mulching lawnmowers with Multiclip technology, please visit us here:

We have to eat to live. Without a regular supply of starch, protein and other complex nutrients we should very soon die. Plants have a very different arrangement! they use carbon, hydrogen and oxygen from the air and soil water in order to make their own starch and sugars. All they need from the soil is a number of simple chemicals which they then use to create all the amino acids, proteins etc that they need.
All soils have a stock of these vital chemicals known as plant nutrients which come from the mineral part of the soil (sand, clay, etc) and from fallen leaves, dead roots etc. When the ground is cultivated and garden plants grown in it, the baklance is upset. Essential elements in the soil are depleted quite rapidly.

This means that these plant nutrients must be applied regularly if you are to keep your plants in good health. Compost or manure will supply a proportion of these nutrients but fertilizers will provide the main source.

There are so many different types of fertilizers on the market that it can be a daunting task to know which to apply and at what time and in what quantity. We wont be going into these details in this post, but it may be something that we go into in more details another time.

The golden rule is to feed plants including grass on a regular basis but no more often than the package recommends.

Methods of applying fertilizer

By hand – The standard method for solid fertilizers in most situations.

Push or towed fertilizer spreader – Recommended for large lawns, and on large beds and borders before planting.

Watering Can – For applying water based fertilizers

Sprayer – For foliar fertilizers
