Microsoft Student with Encarta Premium 2007 offers more math features and a lower price than the 2006 version. The new, step-by-step math resources are a great way to learn and understand math problems. Other features such as foreign language verb conjugations, writing style guides, and access to Encarta Premium 2007 are solid tools for busy students, and the clean interface is inviting. Student's lower price doesn't mean it's a bargain, though: you'll need to buy Microsoft Office XP or 2003 separately to use Student's presentation, chart, and graph templates, and tech-support calls and e-mails cost extra. If you already have Office and don't need technical support, Student 2007 can be terrifically useful. If not, think twice about how much Student may ultimately cost.
We set up Microsoft Student with Encarta Premium 2007 from the enclosed DVD in about 20 minutes in our tests on a Windows XP system. Will Smith’s new film, Hancock, is a special effects-heavy movie about a superhero who is a drunken, dangerously careless jerk. Instead of looking shiny and futuristic in a fancy costume, he looks like a skid row bum in thrift store rags, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. When the story presents this hero’s very public disasters and later his public struggles to be a good guy, this film is quite good, but sadly, it’s not always that good.
John Hancock (Will Smith) is the only superhero on the planet. He lives and works in Los Angeles, and boy, is everywhere else very happy that L.A. is stuck with him. If great power comes with great responsibility, Hancock ain’t buying that notion. He’s edgy, sarcastic, and prone to abusing civilians. His well-intentioned heroics get the job done saving lives and stopping criminals, but the same heroics always seem to leave jaw-dropping damage in their wake.

Los Angelinos have finally had enough. As far as they are concerned, if Hancock can’t do the job right (i.e. without causing millions of dollars in damages every time he plays hero), he needs to go away. But Hancock isn't the kind of man who cares what other people think; then, one day he saves the life of struggling PR executive Ray Embrey (Jason Batman). Grateful to be alive, Ray chooses to see his savior not as a menace, but as conflicted and misunderstood, so Ray convinces Hancock to let him embark on an image makeover of the hero. Hancock even sits down to a decent meal with Ray’s wife, Mary (Charlize Theron), and young son, Aaron (Jae Head). Hancock’s biggest obstacle, however, may be submitting to a prison sentence and finally facing both his demons and his past.
Peter Berg’s quasi-superhero film, Hancock, is at its best when the film presents Hancock fighting the war inside his head out in public. He’s adrift – doesn’t know who he is or remember from where he came. His life is a mess, so he’s messy on the job – literally tearing apart the city’s infrastructure and terrorizing the citizens. Watching those disasters are actually fun.
As fun as the action sequences and Hancock’s confrontations with the public are, the focus only on Hancock’s mental problems is not. It seems that somewhere along the line of developing this project, the filmmakers missed the point that watching Hancock interact with the public is great. When the film focuses on John Hancock’s origin (no spoilers here!) or features him alone, drinking and sulking about, it becomes a morose drama.

This great concept doesn’t exactly fail because of the shaky execution, but Hancock is a strange movie because half of it is a fun, high-concept superhero flick and the other half is a depressed superhero drama. It’s bizarre a situation. Will Smith is so good at creating this mentally, emotionally, and spiritually troubled super human that he also creates a somewhat unsatisfying hero that makes for a movie that is sometimes … well, unsatisfying.
Luckily Jason Bateman (who doesn’t make a bad move in this performance), as Ray Embrey, is so good at understanding what a movie needs at particular moment in the story. It’s the right facial expression, the perfect quip, or the best time to be serious. This movie is victorious when Smith’s Hancock and Bateman’s Embrey are onscreen together. Too bad Hancock doesn’t stick with that simple, yet highly entertaining formula.

Inflation is raging; stock prices are plunging; everyone is worried. What has caused the inflation? And can it be tamed? First, of course, the phenomenal rise of worldwide oil prices. Not because oil consumption has jumped all of a sudden but because speculators have become active in the ‘oil futures’ market. We cannot ban speculation or ‘future trading’. But we can insulate ourselves from the oil shock. To achieve this, we should immediately allow the rupee to become stronger. We should revalue the rupee. That will lower the price of oil to the Indian consumer, making a big dent in inflation. Any side effects? Obviously, exports will get affected. But government can help exporters in various ways. China has been doing it for years. For example, the Chinese government allots a piece of land to a loss-making exporter who makes money by developing the land commercially. We should also curtail our energy consumption. We consume three times more energy, as percentage of GDP, than the world average. There are ways to cut down on energy consumption. Gujarat has shown that raising the groundwater table drastically reduces the energy required for agricultural pumping. Next is the transport sector. The railways consume only one-third the energy needed to move one ton of material over a kilometre by road. Waterways consume even less. We should use these alternative means of transport more intensively. It is time we develop energy from non-oil sources. The private sector should be encouraged to generate energy from renewable sources like solar, wind, waves, tides, geothermal, hydro, biomass and feed it into the grid. For this they should be offered an attractive price per unit. Second, while we should welcome foreign investment in manufacturing, we must discourage it in sectors like real estate. And why do we need dollars to keep flowing into India? We have already built a foreign exchange reserve of $300 billion which is enough to meet our import needs for the next two years. China has an import cover of 11 months and Germany and the US for fewer months. India’s reserves have swollen due to capital inflows rather than exports exceeding imports or profit earned in exports. These inflows are not ‘wealth’. They are liabilities. For developing our foreign exchange reserve we have exported our wealth and got dollars which,in turn,we invested in US treasury bonds thereby financing their infrastructure and economy, not ours. On these treasury bonds we earn a meagre 3 per cent return whereas the government borrows money from market at 8 per cent, losing $15 billion every year which is equal to half the fiscal deficit of the Centre. Third, the food situation. This should not be a long-term problem. Higher food prices can act as an incentive to farmers leading to increased production. Food prices then automatically come down. The catch is that higher food prices do not always reach the farmers; the middlemen pocket it. The government must create conditions where farmers are able to sell their produce directly to consumers so that both can benefit. In every city or town, some land should be earmarked for direct sales. In the meantime, food stamps should be issued to the poor to cushion the impact of high food prices. High Food prices should not be viewed as a calamity. Since India is endowed with fertile land and plenty of rain, we can become a large producer and even exporter of foodgrain and processed food. Thus we can convert the threat of worldwide increase in food prices into an opportunity. Fourth, steel prices have risen leading to speculation in commodities. Steel makers have formed a cartel and have started overcharging. The government-owned SAIL need not become a part of the cartel. It should rather supply steel at reasonable prices and garner a bigger market share. It is surprising that the government is not asking SAIL to stabilise prices while making reasonable profit. Finally, poor infrastructure. If infrastructure improves, the cost of goods and services comes down. We need to quickly build highways, power plants and ports. For this purpose, the government should allow infrastructure companies to float tax-free infrastructure bonds. No question should be asked about the source of money being invested in these bonds. All those with black money would then be tempted to invest in these bonds. At the same time government should do away with Rs 100, Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes giving the holders of these notes an option to either deposit them in their bank account — and pay income tax — or invest it in tax-free infrastructure bonds. The rich would be forced to transact all business through banking channels or credit cards. The poor would use coins or notes up to Rs 50. Black money would instantly vanish, immediately reducing inflation. The current inflation is imported and fuelled by speculation. Rich countries are exporting inflation to us. They no longer wish to invest their money in manufacturing assets. That work has been outsourced to China, India and other countries. Their idle funds are being used for speculation and for investing in commodities. We cannot fight such imported inflation by increasing domestic interest rates or reducing domestic money supply while giving a free run to foreign money supply. That would result in stagnation of the economy. The government’s economic team brought about a miracle 15 years ago by fresh thinking. The time has come to make yet another departure from conventional thinking.

I recently did a survey of Eric's Tips readers, and discovered that the majority of them were suffering from "information overload".
Does that sound like you?
Maybe you've had various people (including the online "gurus") trying to tell you what you "need" to do in order to be successful. And a lot of the information you've received is probably good advice; the problem is that it's now become a bunch of "disconnected knowledge" in your brain.
Perhaps you're one of the many who have experienced "paralysis by analysis". In other words... you have received many pieces of the puzzle, but you don't know how to put the scattered pieces together into a cohesive picture. And since its so overwhelming, you end up accomplishing very little.

That's where I come in.

Hi Probhat,Reed's giveaway was so much fun that I did not want it to end. Ihope you downloaded many good programs that you are anxious tolearn more about.Here are some of my favorite "free" products that are available onthe web. I know this is not on the same level as Reed's giveaway,but I have found these useful for Internet Marketing.AWeber changes the links to a link tracking URL. Below the AWebertracking link is the official site URL spelled out in longhand.There is no affiliate commission on any of these programs, they arejust good programs that I have found useful. If you know of similarprograms that you have found useful, I hope you will share themwith me.Core FTP LE - You need a FTP (file transfer protocol) program toget your content loaded onto your Web page. I started using CoreLite, and Reed even switched over to it. This is probably the onlyInternet Marketing item that Reed has adopted from me.

Kompozer - This HTML editor is so much better than coding HTML byhand. The only problem I have noticed it that you can get itemsrepeated multiple times when copying and pasting. If you are awareof this, you can usually remove the multiple copies without aproblem. There is a newer version available now than I currentlyhave on my computer, and perhaps that solves the multiple copyproblem.

PDF995 - Once you write your masterpiece, you need to convert it toa PDF file. This one is free, easy to install, and simple to use.After installation, all you have to do is click "File" "Print" andthen select PDF995 as the printer from the dropdown menu. Yourworking file is then printed to a PDF file.

Microsoft Paint - Technically Paint is not free, but it is includedwith Windows. Reed rolls his eyes if he even sees Paint open on mycomputer. However, I use it to remove backgrounds from portraitsand to draw arrows and circles to highlight screen shots. You caneven draw with it, and sometimes a drawing is clearer than aphotograph.GIMP - (GNU Image Manipulation Program). Instead of learning how touse Paint, your time might be better served by learning GIMP.Frankly, I have not done much with GIMP, but it looks much morepowerful than Paint, and it is free. If you write a report abouteasy ways to use Gimp, let me know. I am a potential customer.

also should mention Linux and Open Office. I wrote the firstversion of my book on a used $28 computer with Linux and OpenOffice. If you have limited funds and other family members want touse your primary computer, this is a low cost alternative.Linux is an operating system similar to Microsoft Windows. Linux isopen source, which means you can download it free of charge. It hasan active user group with lots of resources if you need help. Youprobably will want a manual. Current versions of Linux have manualswith the CDs included for roughly $30 to $50 (USA). However, youcan sometimes find books with older versions of Linux for less than$10. These older versions are a great option if you are putting iton an older computer. The newer Linux versions may be too bloatedfor an older computer.

Open Office works with Windows or Linux and is open source. Thefiles it creates are compatible with the Microsoft Office products,and you can save the files you create in Open Office to a versionthat Microsoft Office can open.
