What is the scoop on January's Birthstone?

January's birthstone is a gem known as the Garnet.

We are going to share some interesting facts about this month's birthstone, which is commonly given in gifts for Valentine's Day. First of all, where did Garnets get their name? It's from the Latin word pomegranate, "granatus", because the garnet crystals in rock reminded scientists of the seeds in the pomegranate fruit.

Now that you know where the name Garnet originates, let us tell you about the color.

Did you know that Garnets are found in every color except blue?

Dark red garnets have been popular since the early Victorian period of 1835-1850. The four species of garnet are pyrope, almandine, rhodolite, and tsavorite.

Pyrope, from the Greek word pyropus meaning “fiery-eyed,” is the darkest red garnet. Pyrope garnets were called "Bohemian garnets" because they came from the Bohemian Hills of Czechoslovakia. They have been mined here since the 1500s, but garnets are also mined in East Africa, India, and Sri Lanka. The Pyrope Garnets range from a deep dark red to black.
Almandine Garnets are a medium-red color. Almandine garnets range from dark brownish red to medium red. Maroon may describe this color best.
Rhodolite is found in red with purple or raspberry overtones. Rhodolite garnets range from a medium purple color to a deep purplish-red color. When you see Rhodolites you may associate the color of the stone to be similar to that of a grape, cranberry, raspberry, or plums.
Tsavorite garnets range from a lighter bright green to a medium dark green color. This gem tends to be a vibrant, fresh green.

Garnets are plentiful and affordable. As for strength the Garnet is very durable, so it’s ideal for the stone to be worn on a daily basis.

Legend has it that the garnet was hung in the ark by Noah for illumination, and it is because of this that the Garnet is considered the gem of faith. Garnets are said to give the wearer night protection from nightmares. The Egyptians thought the Garnet was an antidote for snakebites and food poisoning, while Russian Czars favored the rare green garnets.

What can happen to your diamond jewelry?

Diamonds can become chipped or become loose in its setting and fall out.
They can get smudged, soiled, and dusty.
It is common for diamonds to pick up grease and oils from lotions, powders, soaps, and even natural skin oils, which places a film on the diamond cutting down the diamond's brilliance.

A clean diamond will "SPARKLE"! Why is this you ask? Well, when it is clean, the maximum amount of light can enter the stone and return the light in a fiery brilliance.

It takes just a little care to keep Diamonds sparkling:

It helps to occasionally wipe the Diamonds with a lint-free cloth.
When doing rough work, do not wear diamond jewelry, especially rings. The diamond may be one of the hardest materials by nature, but it can still be chipped by a sharp blow or become knocked loose.
You can keep your diamonds sparkling with regular cleaning methods such as: warm water, mild soap, and a soft toothbrush or a commercial cleaning solution. It is not recommended to use ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
Avoid touching your clean diamonds with your fingers. Handle clean jewelry by the edges.
Chlorine can damage and discolor the mounting on your jewelry, so keep your jewelry and diamonds away from harsh household chemicals. Keep this in mind when swimming in chlorinated pools or hot tubs.

We are here to share several tips to help you care and clean your precious jewelry. Your fine jewelry is meant to last a lifetime and between these proper care and Justice Jeweler's services you will see the qualities of your jewelry last. We are looking to share several tips with you over the next few blogs.

General Tips:

Store your jewelry in a clean, dry place.
Keep your jewelry in a fabric-lined jewelry case, or in a box with compartments and dividers. If you prefer to use ordinary boxes, wrap each piece individually in soft tissue paper.
Do not jumble your jewelry pieces in a drawer or jewelry case. Pieces can become scratched if jumbled together.
Be careful when removing your jewelry. When washing hands, remove it away from the sink to reduce the chance of it slipping down the drain.
We recommend that you see our jeweler every 6 months to have your jewelry checked for loose prongs, worn mountings, and general wear and tear. We will professionally clean your jewelry any time you are in to visit.
If you are looking to purchase a machine for cleaning your jewelry, an ultrasonic cleaner is available in many different models and prices. They can be a convenient way to quickly clean your jewelry at home. However, ultrasonic cleaners can damage some jewelry. Yes, Justice Jewelers has gifts for Dad, but did you know that Father's Day began with an idea in 1909?

This idea began when Mrs. John B. Dodd proposed the idea of having a special day to honor her father who was a Civil War veteran. Mr. William Smart was her father and was widowed when Mrs. Smart died during childbirth. Mr. Smart raised 6 children and maintained a farm in Washington State. Mrs. Dodd wanted to show her appreciation for all the hard work and devotion he had given selflessly throughout the years. June 19, 1910 was the first Father's Day to be observed in Spokane, Washington. This wonderful spirit spread to other cities in America and in 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day, but it wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed Father's day would be the 3rd Sunday of June. Interestingly enough Father's Day falls on June 19th this year just as it did in 1910.

1. Do it the old fashioned way. Get down on one knee with a rose clenched in your teeth and ring in your hand just before you are about to eat dessert in a busy restaurant.
2. Have a waiter bring you a small cake with the ring inside it (be careful she doesn’t swallow it).
3. Take her to the theatre and ask the stage manager if he will ask her to marry you after the final curtain, this is the perfect ending to a perfect evening.

Many thanks to everyone who visited Justice Jewelers this past year. We really do appreciate you giving us a chance. I should be used to it by now, but every year at this time a great big sense of relief washes over me. We made it through another year! The little store I opened in 1984 is still chuggin’.

If you’ve been coming here since those early days, thank you for your loyalty. And if 2010 marked the first time you’d ever been in, thank you for keeping an open mind. I sure hope your experience was a good one. I want you to come back. It feels good to help commemorate of the special moments in your lives.

I know that sounds cheesy but it’s sincere. We get to spend our days selling symbols of love to happy people. That’s pretty special. So from the bottom of our hearts, thank you, thank you, thank you. Without you, none of this is possible.
