The story of Oncwanique is an unbelievably shocking story of what a parent did to their own child, their own flesh and blood. It is truly shocking and disgusting, but the fact that no one bothered to report this child missing for months after she disappeared is inexcusable. THAT is the reason that I am posting the story here. PLEASE: BE AWARE of the children around you- PAY ATTENTION!!!! If one of them suddenly isn't being seen as they normally are, that should serve as a screaming siren that there is something wrong, and authorities should be NOTIFIED!!!

Oncwanique was born in Chicago, Illinois. This is where she resided. When Oncwanique was sixteen months old she was murdered by her parents, she was choked, suffocated, her arms and feet were chopped up, cooked in batter and distributed outside for the animals to eat, they removed her head and spine, and placed her body into a large bucket of battery acid which they stirred occasionally over a six week period to ensure her little body dissolved!! They then poured her down the drain! The went to a neighbor and borrowed a blender and bended her head and poured it down the toilet!

It was six months until Oncwanique was noted as missing! Because of what happened to Oncwanique there was no body to give her a funeral or burial!

I am sure that some of you reading this have already known about this precious child. I have fallen behind in my blogging and research, therefore, this sad sad story was new to me.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KRQE) - Brianna Lopez would be 6 years old now had her death at 6 months not revealed perhaps the most brutal child-abuse case in state history and prompted a major change in New Mexico law.

But as the July 19 anniversary of her death nears, some say the changes have not gone far enough.

The story of Baby Brianna is a hard one, but it is the ugly reality of child abuse. Violent family members caused her death while others hid what they knew was going on.

"They raped her; they beat her," said District Attorney Susana Martinez who prosecuted the case. "She had bite marks on her face, cheek, head, arms, legs, chest, torso, everywhere.

"Literally bruised from head to toe, from the top of her head all throughout her body all the way to the big toe on her right foot."

She was beaten and raped by her own family.

"Massive bruising on the head, and then her little fingers were lacerated, toes," said Detective Lindell Wright who was the first officer on the scene.

Brianna died on July 19, 2002. When Wright saw her body at a hospital, he remembers one thought going through his mind: "I've got a lot to do."

Later, when he had time to look back, "I cried my eyes out. It will stay with me for the rest of my life."

Investigators said Brianna's mother and father, Stephanie Lopez and Andy Walters, and her uncle Steven Lopez were responsible.

The night before, Steven and Andy threw Brianna to the ceiling, then let her slam to the ground. And they had raped her time and time again.

Brianna's mother had bitten her child. The source of the other bruises remains a mystery.

"Bite marks throughout her body; there were old and new," Wright said. "She had skull fractures that were old and new.

"She had bleeding on the brain both old and new which means she had been abused physically her entire life."

And while all the abuse was going on another uncle and a grandmother knew but never reported it or tried to stop it.

Martinez won convictions and maximum sentences for the three abusers.

"It tests you to the point you're not sure you can speak," Martinez said. "You're afraid that the emotion will take over."

For some Martinez's successful prosecution only highlighted shortcomings in the law.

When Baby Brianna was killed a person who committed intentional child abuse resulting in death faced a maximum of 18 years in prison. Her case brought on a major change.

"Eighteen years for the life of a child?" State Sen. Mary Jane Garcia of DoÃ±a Ana said. "I thought it was absurd."

It took Garcia three years of trying, but she changed the law to make the crime punishable by a life sentence.

"If the judges continue to sentence to the maximum under the new law, the law is sufficient," Martinez said. "But if a judge doesn't sentence them to the maximum to try to give some sort of deterrent effect to the rest of the community we've lost."

Both Martinez and Garcia said more needs to be done to punish people like Brianna's grandmother and uncle who fail to report abuse.

"Those two individuals knew she was being abused," Martinez said. "She was full of bruises that were old: green, brown, yellow-colored.

"Had they reported it early, had they and insisted on that child not being abused maybe we would have never had her death take place."

For failing to report the abuse the three were sentenced to 30 days in jail. The maximum is one year.

"I think perhaps we ought to try to make it five years at least," Garcia said. "I would go for something like that, and I would certainly try it."

However Wright said it's not just the law that needs to change.

"I think a lot of proactive still needs to happen as far as young parents need to have proper education, proper support systems," Wright said. "I feel a lot of young parents are struggling by themselves.

"They don't have anywhere to turn, and it is the chemistry of child abuse."

Brianna's story still brings much pain to the people in DoÃ±a Ana County who came together after her death, paid for her casket and burial and claimed her body when no one else would.

"The community felt that Baby Brianna could be their child, their granddaughter, their daughter, their niece," Las Cruces resident Edgar Lopez said.

Baby Brianna is now locked up in a cage built around her grave by her family to keep the community who loved her so much out. It is a mess, unkempt and full of trash.

"They were asked, and they said they just wanted to be left alone and they wanted Brianna to be left alone," Martinez said.

Inside is a cherub with a finger raised to her lips. Some believe it's a message.

"My first thought was, 'Let's not talk about what's occurred here,'" Lopez said.

Yet the community vows to not let that happen. People still leave flowers here and have built another marker.

The people of this community will never forget Brianna and neither will the detectives, social workers and prosecutors who worked on her case.

Wright said they never found pictures of Brianna in her home, not a single image of her playing, laughing or smiling. He wanted to know what she looked like alive.

"Before they started the autopsy and her little face was lying on a white sheet and I thought she looks asleep," Wright said. "So I just took the picture."

The picture has since transformed with the bruises erased and the bite marks taken away. The scars have disappeared.

It's the Brianna this community likes to remember.

"There's a photograph of her to carry on of her little life," Wright said.

The picture hangs on the wall next to Susana Martinez's desk.

"It's a reminder, of course, of why we do what we do," Martinez said. "If you forget you'll either become calloused or you will become Jell-O.

"You can't do this job well unless you are in the middle, and that's just a good reminder why we do it."

Brianna is never far from the detective either.

"It drives me to work harder to prevent, to be a voice for every child of abuse," Wright said. "That's what it does."

The cop, the prosecutor and the politician agree it's everyone's job to report child abuse. Anyone who sees, or even suspects a child is being abused, needs to step in.

Babys autopsy reveals signs of long-term abuse

The autopsy of 5-month-old Brianna Lopez revealed she had suffered abuse most of her short life in what deputies say is one of the worst cases of child abuse they have ever seen.
Her parents are among those charged with her death.
Brianna was pronounced dead Friday morning at Memorial Medical Center after she was rushed there when attempts to revive her failed, Doa Ana County Sheriffs Sgt. Ed Miranda said.
Friday night, police arrested Briannas parents, Stephanie Lopez, 19, and Andy Walters, 21, and uncle, Steven Lopez, 19. They each are charged with child abuse resulting in death. Walters also was charged with criminal sexual penetration of the baby.
Deputies have now interviewed the six adults and two children who lived in the home with Brianna. Miranda said the family is being cooperative.
The autopsy revealed a long list of injuries that appeared to have been inflicted over an extended period of time upon the little girl who was born on Valentines Day.
On Monday, Miranda detailed the multiple injuries found on the babys body. He said Brianna had 11 human bite marks in varied stages of healing, multiple bruises, fractures to two right ribs, three skull fractures, swelling of the brain and signs of shaken baby syndrome. Brianna also had fractures to both legs, an injury experts say is commonly caused by picking up the child with a quick, jerking motion by the legs.
Investigators will obtain dental impressions to determine who made the bite marks.
In court records, Walters admitted to biting Brianna, but said he "did not take a chunk out of her." Walters said his 18-month-old son also bit the baby. He said that Stephanie Lopez also bit and pinched her when she became frustrated with Brianna.
According to Miranda, Walters and Steven Lopez were drinking beer Thursday night when they began to toss Brianna into the air, hitting her head on the ceiling and at least twice failing to catch her before she hit the floor.
Stephen Lopez told investigators that he had drunk 10 beers from a case that Walters admitted buying.
Stephanie Lopez said she had about three beers, then fell asleep. The next morning, she told investigators, she found Brianna on the floor and was unable to wake her.
Walters said when Stephanie Lopez asked what happened to Brianna, he told her "we played a little rough with her last night."
Miranda said additional charges will be filed.
"There are definite signs of neglect and failure to protect," he said.
The three defendants were arraigned Monday, and bond was set at $250,000 each, Miranda said.
Miranda said it is the worst case of child abuse he has seen in his law enforcement career.
"Brianna has been the most severe," Miranda said. "This is a difficult case that is complex to work."
The investigation and what it has revealed has been emotional for the officers working on the case. Miranda said counselors were brought in Monday night to help them deal with the case.
"When you have parents hurting children, you have a lot of emotions," Miranda said.
Sheriffs records show no child abuse reports made at the home. Miranda said there have been domestic disturbance calls, but none involving children.
The two other children, Briannas 18-month-old brother and 8-year-old uncle, are in protective custody. Miranda said the children have no visible signs of neglect or abuse.
Miranda said while law enforcement, medical personnel and teachers are required to report suspected child abuse, it is the communitys duty to do the same.

Timeline of events according to police documents

Thursday night, July 18th, at 6 p.m., Andy Walters stopped to buy a case of beer, and headed home to 5243 Comanche Trail in Las Cruces.

Three people-- Walters, 21, Stephanie Lopez, 19, and her twin brother Steven Lopez, 19, drink through the evening.

Stephanie went to bed after about three beers. According to court documents, Andy Walters and Steven Lopez admitted to playing with Stephanie and Walters's 5-month old daughter, Brianna.

Police records show that Walters and Lopez threw the child into the air, causing her to hit her head on the ceiling 3 times, then dropped her twice on the floor.

Andy Walters told investigators that Brianna was conscious and crying.

At around 12:30 a.m., Friday morning, Andy Walters fell asleep not knowing where Brianna was.

At three in the morning, Walters says he awoke to find Brianna on the floor near the bed. He said he wrapped her in a blanket and put her in a bouncer.

By 7 a.m., Brianna needed a diaper change. Stephanie Lopez asked about the bruises on Brianna, and according to court documents, Walters admitted that he and Steven Lopez "played a little rough with her".

Walters changed the diaper and took a baby wipe, wrapped it around his index finger and inserted it into brianna's anus.

The complaint also states Andy Walters admitted he bit Brianna on several occasions, but he told Dona Ana County Sheriff's Deputies he is not not the only family member to bite Brianna.

Walters also told authorites that Stephanie Lopez pinched and threw Brianna out of frustration.

The uncle, Steven Lopez, admits to throwing Brianna in the air and not catching her. Steven Lopez claims to have drunk ten beers the previous night.

During his interview with Sheriff's Deputies, Steven Lopez admitted to having sex with Brianna Lopez. (she was 5 months old!!!) Adding that he, as well as Andy Walters, had penetrated Brianna on several different occasions.

By 10 a.m., July 19th, Stephanie Lopez checks on her daughter, notices Brianna is not breathing, and she calls 9-1-1.

11:10 am, Friday July 19th, five month old Brianna Lopez dies at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces.

Autopsy results show Brianna Lopez had 11 bite marks on her body, broken ribs, skull fractures, bleeding of the optic nerves and brain swelling.

This child abuse story is about a 5-month-old little girl named Brianna Lopez. On July 19, 2002 Baby Brianna passed away. Her father and uncle would toss her in the air and not catch her. They sexually assaulted her. Her uncle raped her. They bit her. Her mother threw her, bit her and pinched her. She was bruised and beaten. Her grandmother and another uncle knew about the abuse but didn't do anything. Brianna also had several broken bones. She had bleeding from the brain, broken ribs, bucket handle fractures, all signs of shaken baby syndrome. They beat and raped her time and time again. Her mother "fell asleep" while they killed Brianna.

Her mother's boyfriend, Andy Walters, got 57 years in prison. Her uncle, the mother's twin brother, Steven Lopez, got 51 years. Her mother, Stephanie Lopez, got 27 years. Her grandmother and other uncle got 60 days in jail. Remember all those who read this, Brianna was beaten and bruised from head to toe and nobody could help her.

Brianna is buried in Albuquerque, New Mexico. When people kept visiting her grave, her family built a metal gate around her grave and locked it shut.

Anyone who reads this, you might become saddened or go in a rage. That baby did nothing to deserve that. This should happen to no child.

Two Year Anniversary of the Day Caylee Anthony Vanished

Today is the 2 year mark of the day that Caylee Anthony vanished from the lives of those who knew and loved her. It is also the two year mark of the day that her mother personified the selfish, spoiled brat that we know as her now, Casey Marie Anthony. While it is not the day that we would normally call an anniversary in the normal sense of the term, it is a day that marks two years of lies, deception, unbelievable irreverence to little Caylee's memory, a day that no one but her own mother knew she was no longer here on this earth. Her grandparents, while I can't say this for a fact, may have also known to a degree what was going on, and simply realized a month later that they could no longer cover up Casey's act of greed and selfishness, without the world around them pointing fingers at not only their daughter, but possibly at themselves as well. This is only speculation on my part, mind you, but I feel like there's enough lies and covering up done by George and Cindy Anthony to speak for itself.
Caylee Anthony was a beautiful child. Her precious face captured the hearts of America, but only after she vanished. There is so much more that this beautiful child could have become. Instead, thanks to the inexplainable behavior of her closest family members, she has become another sad statistic, and an example of what thousands of other abused children must go through every day. This is something that only we, the people of America, can change. These are our children, grandchildren, next door neighbor's children, nieces, nephews, students, and friends. Together, we can stop child abuse, if we just open our mouths and take the right actions.

The statistics are unbelievable. The horror stories just keep getting worse. The pathetic state of how many children are missing each and every day in the United States alone is overwhelming. It is said that a child disappears every forty (yes, that's right, 40) seconds in this country alone. That is over 2100 children that disappear every single day here in the United States. These statistics are from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. (Otherwise known as OJJDP). It has also been estimated that up to another 500,000 may go missing each year without EVER being reported.
How can that possibly be? Why would someone NOT report a missing child?
Surely there are others in that child's life that would realize that that child is no longer actively being seen! A teacher, a neighbor, a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, a sibling even. There is just no logical answer for such a thing to occur.

It’s one of the worst things that could happen to any parent; it’s sometimes a fate worse than death because while death brings closure, knowing that your child is missing and not knowing what happened to them torments more than you would think possible. Parents of missing children are in a quandary of the worst kind – they are in a sort of limbo that is hard to get out of. They don’t know if they must mourn the loss of their child or continue to hope that they will be found soon, and this dilemma tears them apart and does not let them heal and go on with their lives. If you know someone whose child is missing, you can help in various ways, some of which are detailed below:
Don’t intrude: There are times when people whose children are lost want to be left alone; they don’t want to repeat the details of the horror they have faced to every person who comes calling, whether out of curiosity or even if it is to help. So know when you’re intruding on their privacy and when they need to be left to themselves. Also, don’t take it the wrong way when they ask you to leave because they wish to be alone with their thoughts and misery.

Don’t judge: People have different ways to cope with grief, so just because your idea of coping does not coincide with theirs, don’t judge the parents of missing children. Be of help in any way you can, but don’t think that this gives you the right to decide if what they do is morally or ethically right or wrong. Be supportive without judging what they say or what they do.

Help out: There are various ways you can help parents of missing children – by looking after their other children, taking care of routine activities like cooking and cleaning, driving their kids to school and other activities like soccer or softball, and others. In short, your time and efforts spent on helping to provide them with a sense of normalcy will go a long way in alleviating their anxiety.

Understand: Parents of missing children are bound to behave irrationally, have extreme mood swings, and sink into a depression because they are worried about their child and because they are under a great deal of stress. So understand their psyche and don’t take it personally if you’re at the receiving end of their bad moods.

Cooperate with law enforcement: And finally, you must cooperate with law enforcement officials without hiding any information, even if it means people you know are going to be accused or come under suspicion. You must do all you can to help find the missing child at the earliest, because the more time goes by, the less the chances of finding him/her alive.

In recent past, we have been made aware of some of the most high profile missing children's cases in years. Caylee Anthony, Haleigh Cummings, Elizabeth Olten, Somer Thompson, just to name a very few. The list could go on for pages and pages. But remember, there are hundreds more cases out there just like these, and every single child deserves to be able to be brought home safely.

What to Do:

If your child disappears in a store, notify the store manager or security office. Then immediately call your local law-enforcement agency. Many stores have a Code Adam plan of action— if a child is missing in the store, employees immediately mobilize to look for the missing child.

When you call law enforcement, provide your child's name, date of birth, height, weight, and any other unique identifiers such as eyeglasses and braces. Tell them when you noticed that your child was missing and what clothing he or she was wearing.

Request that your child's name and identifying information be immediately entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Missing Person File.

The Horrible Sad Case of Sandra Cantu

With the trial of Sandra Cantu's killer now having taken place, perhaps it is time we all looked back and reflected upon the case, and our system of justice in this country.
America is notoriously known for allowing known killers to leave our prison system after so many years. In some states, there are even laws that allow a convicted person to walk free out of prison after serving only a portion of their sentence, no matter what their crime, and no matter how serious that crime was, including murder. A simple google search will turn up dozens of stories about this issue.
In the case of Sandra Cantu, America was shocked when a Sunday School teacher was arrested and charged with the murder. Not only was she a Sunday School teacher, she was a mother herself.

Sandra Cantu, 8, disappeared March 27. Her body was found at a dairy-farm pond near her Calilfornia home.
Sandra Cantu had been missing since March 27, and her body was found Monday, stuffed into a suitcase that was raised from a pond at a dairy farm. An autopsy was being conducted Tuesday, Tracy police Sgt. Tony Sheneman told reporters, but he said he did not know when results would be available.
"No one is currently detained. No one has been arrested," Sheneman said. "We have not closed our interest on any particular person, and we're still looking for the perpetrator of this crime."
A search warrant was served Monday night inside the mobile home park where Sandra lived with her family, Sheneman said, but he would not offer specifics. Watch how the suitcase was found »
A church just west of the park also was cordoned off, and Sheneman said it would be searched Tuesday after evidence teams -- who worked through the night -- have a chance to rest and examine evidence from the mobile home park.
Asked whether the church search was connected to Monday night's search warrant, Sheneman said it was, but he would not elaborate.
"We have a direction, but I can't comment on what it is, and I can't comment on the strength of the leads we have at the moment," he said.
While the cause of Sandra's death has not been determined, police consider it a homicide because of the location of her body.
"A lot" of evidence was recovered in the Monday night search, Sheneman said. More than 10 search warrants have been executed as part of the investigation.
"As a parent, this is every parent's worst nightmare," Sheneman said. "As professionals, it's renewed the strength of the investigation and focused everyone's dedication to finding out who's responsible."
The day Sandra was last seen, she came home from school, kissed her mother and left to play with a friend who lives a couple of homes away. A short time later, she left to go to another friend's home, according to a family spokeswoman.
She was wearing a pink Hello Kitty T-shirt and black leggings, which police used to identify her body.
Earlier in the investigation, police released surveillance video that showed the child in the mobile home park where she lives, skipping and happily swinging her arms on the day she disappeared. They had hoped to get tips with the eight-second video.
Sheneman spoke Tuesday in front of the mobile home park, where residents had established an impromptu memorial of flowers, stuffed animals and balloons in Sandra's honor.
Police have received many calls and messages from those wishing to offer condolences, he said. Police are asking that all cards for the family be sent to police, and a liaison will make sure Sandra's family receives them.
Hundreds attended a vigil for Sandra on Monday at a community park near her family's home in Tracy, CNN television affiliate KCRA-TV reported. The crowd formed prayer circles, sang and created memorials to Sandra.

Police say they are closing in on a suspect in the death of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu, whose body was found stuffed into a suitcase Monday, 10 days after the second-grader vanished from the mobile home park where she lived.
"It's not as big a mystery as it was," before, said Tracy, Calif., police Sgt. Tony Sheneman to ABCNews.com, "and we believe we're getting significantly closer."
"We're hopeful that we will have something in the next couple of days," he said.
The discovery of the suitcase by farmworkers brought a tragic end to a massive search that had enveloped the town. Police were aided by hundreds of volunteers, dogs, horses and the FBI.
In the end, it was a twice-yearly practice of draining a collection pond used for irrigation that led police to Sandra's body.
When the pond, about 125 to 150 yards long and about 30 yards wide, began to empty, the suitcase appeared.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children had translated missing posters into Spanish to alert the largely Spanish-speaking population, many of them migrant workers, that live in the area.
"They saw the suitcase come up to the surface and thought it was odd," Sheneman said.
When the luggage was opened at the morgue, investigators found Sandra's body inside, still dressed in the pink Hello Kitty T-shirt and black leggings she was wearing March 27, the day she disappeared.
Autopsy results are expected later today.
Sandra's uncle Joe Chavez declined to comment on her death, telling ABCNews.com that "the family has no comment" right now.
An 'Innocent, Sweet Girl'
Barbara Sokoloski, the family's neighbor in the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park, told ABCNews.com today that everyone there is "devastated."

28-year-old Melissa Huckaby is suspected of murdering the young girl, but has also been charged with kidnapping and rape. Her body was found inside a suitcase in an irrigation pond but officials are no longer releasing information on the case because of a gag order. But new details emerged on Sunday, claiming Huckaby raped Sandra with a screwdriver before she died, a source told BNO News. The source said the information is not expected to be released until after the trial.
The source told BNO News that Sandra Cantu’s father, Danny Cantu, has said the Clover Road Baptist Church, where Huckaby’s grandfather is the pastor, is actually a cult with 13 members. Danny also said, according to the source, that he did not kill Sandra and that he would take a lie detector test to prove it.
Danny said he had connections “due to his past” and that the person who killed his daughter “would be taken care of.” He further said the pastor of the church had nothing to do with the girl’s murder and that Sandra’s DNA was found on a cot at the church.

Now, pardon me if I seem a bit out of line here, but- is this type of scenario not reason enough to call upon the death penalty being served?

Chelsea King- Body discovered this afternoon

Authorities announced Tuesday afternoon that the body of 17-year-old Chelsea King, who disappeared while jogging in Rancho Bernardo Community Park last Thursday, has been discovered in or near Lake Hodges.

The teen's body was found around 2 p.m. A candlelight vigil planned for the teen is still scheduled to happen tonight.

Earlier Tuesday, hundreds of volunteers and law enforcement personnel fanned out over fields, swamps and marshes around Lake Hodges for a sixth straight day Tuesday in a determined effort to find a Poway High School senior who went missing while on one of her regular jogs in the scenic area.

John Albert Gardner, 30, is in jail and awaiting a Wednesday arraignment on suspicion of raping and murdering King.

Gardner was arrested Sunday afternoon after authorities said his DNA was found on King's underwear, which was located in the Lake Hodges area.

The sheriff's department reported at 3:15 p.m. that they had rescheduled an earlier news conference for 3:45 p.m.

The body of 17-year-old high school student Chelsea King was believed to have been found Tuesday in a shallow grave near a lake not far from her northern San Diego County home, authorities said.
““There is a strong likelihood we have found Chelsea,” said Sheriff Bill Gore at a Tuesday afternoon news conference, confirming the worst fears of the Poway High School senior’s family and friends who had harbored hopes that she might still be alive.
King, a straight-A student and cross-country runner, had been missing since Thursday, when she went out for a run in hilly parkland near Lake Hodges, located near Escondido.
A convicted sex offender, John Albert Gardner III, 30, was arrested Sunday night in connection with King’s disappearance and will be charged Wednesday, according to the San Diego County district attorney’s office.
King’s disappearance prompted an outpouring of support in San Diego and beyond, with hundreds of people joining search efforts and more than 76,000 becoming fans of a Facebook page. Her parents, Brent and Kelly King, appeared on national news broadcasts expressing the belief that she was still alive.
Authorities said earlier Tuesday that Gardner had been linked to an attack in December on a 22-year-old woman in the same park where King disappeared. Gardner allegedly tackled the woman and demanded money. She escaped after hitting Gardner in the face, San Diego police said.
Gardner is registered as a sex offender and lives in Lake Elsinore in Riverside County, but he had been visiting his mother in Rancho Bernardo, just south of Lake Hodges, officials said.
Gardner served five years in connection with a 2000 attack on a 13-year-old girl, officials said. After getting out of prison, he wore a global positioning system tracking device until his parole ended in 2008, Gore said.

UPDATE: Though Alissa Blanton applied for a restraining order just a week before her murder, Judge Dean Moxley denied the petition, saying he didn't have enough evidence -- despite 70 pages of harassing emails.

Roger Troy, 61, was apparently one of those guys who took the faux flirting of Hooters waitresses as genuine affection, rather than a naked attempt to get him to empty his wallet. And he took a special fancy to Alissa Blanton.

The young woman worked at the Hooters in Merritt Island, Florida until September of 2008. During that time, Troy became obsessed with her, though his initial passion appeared somewhat innocent.

"In the beginning Roger was a regular customer that came in daily and always sat in my section," Alissa would later write in a protection order taken out against him. "I gave him my e-mail one day because he continued to ask for my number. That way he knew my schedule. He never harassed me in the beginning."

But Troy began to consider it more than a waitress-customer relationship. "At the end of employment at Hooters, Roger always tried to walk me to my car at the end of the night, but he would stand and talk and hug me and so on. My manager John didn't like this. The customers are not allowed to touch any of the girls."

So her boss confronted Troy, warning him that touching was a no-no. But he seemed to believe that buying overpriced wings entitled him to more than a tight shirt and a smile. "He has said several times that he spent so much money there and on me, and he doesn't deserve to be treated this way (not talking to him)," Alissa wrote in her complaint.

"After this incident he stopped sitting in my section, and the e-mails started about how terrible I am and all about an ex-boyfriend I was dating. I moved to Orlando to be closer to new job and he began showing up there and e-mailing about seeing me. I reported it. Then got married and moved back to Brevard County and letters are coming and stalking here
also."

Blanton got a job at an AT&T call center and married a coworker last August. But Troy's stalking only continued, becoming even more obsessed. "He states several times drove by my home, how he has seen me in Orlando. He describes how I look (like that I gained weight and cut my hair). He once came to my work at AT&T call center in Orlando, and blocked me in my car. (Parked his car behind mine and came to my window and put arms on window ledge.) Also, in letters, put in other remarks, like 'Wearing your seatbelt?' "

So a week ago, she took out a temporary restraining order against him. A hearing was scheduled for February 16. But Troy wasn't about to wait for that.

On Monday, he caught up with Alissa in a parking lot outside AT&T in Orlando and opened fire. Though details are still sparse, witnesses say he may have fired as many as a dozen shots.

Alissa later died at the hospital. Troy shot himself and was found dead at the scene.

UPDATE: Judge Dean Moxley denied Alissa Blanton's petition for a restraining order, even though she showed him 70 pages of harassing emails.

Despite this overwhelming evidence, Moxley ruled it wasn't enough and scheduled a hearing for February 16. In fairness to the judge, it wouldn't have helped much anyway. A man intent on murder-suicide has little fear of the law.

But it also shows how lightly some judges treat serial stalkers. In this case, Troy had stalked Alissa going on two years, following her as she moved and littering her lawn with menacing notes.

Meanwhile, neighbors of Troy say he moved to Florida from Ohio about 10 years ago. He ran a mail-order business from his condo and was viewed by neighbors as smart and opinionated.

He was also apparently a gun nut, often bragging about how many weapons he owned.

Why is this filed under justicebeserved? When is it going to get through to our legal system that when a person tries to get help from L.E., who genuinely needs it, it should be GIVEN?? Sources close to the investigation said that a a group of new pictures released Tuesday include images of what prosecutors said is the murder weapon used to kill Caylee Anthony.
According to sources, a strip of duct tape found on Caylee’s mouth is one of three prosecutors believe were used by Casey Anthony to suffocate her daughter.
Anthony’s defense maintains the tape is just a theory and the state has no definitive proof of the murder, citing that the state failed to find Anthony’s prints on the duct tape.”The biggest problem for the defense is that there can never be an innocent explanation for duct tape being fixed on a child’s face,” Orlando defense attorney Richard Hornsby said.

Hornsby said that the number of pieces of tape and where they were placed is critical.”The fact that there was more than one piece and they were used to block the airways, clearly that’s where the state is going to argue the premeditation comes from,” Hornsby said.

The state attorney has denied comment, but in a December hearing, prosecutor Jeff Ashton first laid out his theory.
“Maybe her killer saw her eyes as she applied one piece, then two, then three so that no breath was possible,” he said.
Hornsby also said that the defense is validating the state’s theory by trying to cast doubt on Roy Kronk, the former meter reader who discovered Caylee’s remains. “The defense pointing at Roy Kronk as having used duct tape, they’re admitting to tape being affixed to her face and Caylee suffocating,” Hornsby said.
Also amid the documents released are photographs of the trunk liner taken from Anthony’s white Pontiac and the rare Henkel brand of duct tape found on Caylee’s small skull. The same type of tape was used by the Anthony Enlarged photos showed a knife with a strand of something sticking to it. The photos were submitted to an FBI laboratory for testing, but the knife could not be linked to the duct tape.

IN a dramatic jailhouse confession, Casey Anthony revealed where she buried her precious daughter’s body!
The ENQUIRER has learned Casey was overheard in jail describing the exact spot where she hid her 2-year-old girl’s remains.
And it was the 23-year-old murder mom’s own description of Caylee’s grave that led a meter reader to find the child’s body, sources say.
“Casey said she was able to drive her car into the wooded area about a half-mile from her Florida home near a school,” a source close to the case disclosed.
“Then she said, ‘When I got out of the car, I tripped over these bricks.’ She said she buried Caylee’s body nearby, and it was about 80 feet from the road.”
Casey’s stunning jailhouse admission, which prosecutors are now trying to use as evidence, came not long after she was arrested in July 2008, according to the source.
Her detailed description of Caylee’s final resting place was overheard by a prison employee at the Orange County Jail in Orlando, and spread among other staffers there, the source said.
Meter reader Roy Kronk heard the story from a female friend who works at the jail and decided to search for Caylee’s body, said the source.
In August 2008, he trudged into the woods near the location that had been described to him.
“Kronk was looking for the bricks that Casey said she tripped over,” said the source. “He found some brick pavers, but they weren’t the right ones.”
Kronk called the police with tips about Caylee’s location three times that month, but a deputy sheriff dispatched to the area didn’t do a thorough search.
A tropical storm then drenched the Orlando area and the wooded area became a swamp. But that didn’t deter Kronk.
Two weeks before Thanksgiving 2008, his son Brandon said Kronk told him: “I know where Caylee is, and I’m going to go get her.”
On Dec. 11, 2008, Kronk returned to the site and found Caylee’s remains.
“The only reason Roy Kronk found Caylee is that the body’s location had come to him in a roundabout way from Casey Anthony herself,” said the source.
Prosecutors learned about Casey’s jailhouse confession only recently, and filed a motion on Feb. 3 asking for a private meeting with the judge presiding over pre-trial hearings in the case.
According to the motion, prosecutors want the judge to delay their obligation to reveal the information to Casey’s attorneys as they continue to evaluate the new evidence.
Casey, who has pleaded not guilty, is facing the death penalty. Her admission could provide the key proof that leads to her conviction. SOURCE: NATIONAL ENQUIRER

New photos and documents that came out in the Casey Anthony case Tuesday just add to the more than 12,000 pages of evidence already released. But WFTV legal expert Bill Sheaffer says the mountain of evidence does not suggest any suspect other than Casey.
Eyewitness News was in court when the defense claimed they had proof that someone else killed Caylee. So, where is that proof? In a word, nowhere.
The defense was supposed to produce it to prosecutors two weeks ago. Nothing in the 12,419 pages of evidence released so far, including the newly-released photos of laser testing for body fluids on the carpeting in Casey Anthony’s trunk and evidence found by WFTV of more of the rare duct tape connected to the Anthonys that matches up to the tape found over Caylee’s nose and mouth, shows anyone but Casey was involved.
“It is certainly consistent with the state’s theory of the case, reinforces the state’s theory of the case and inconsistent with what we’re hearing from the defense that it could’ve been someone else involved with this crime,” Sheaffer told Eyewitness News Tuesday.
Six months ago, the defense said it had substantial evidence that someone else put Caylee’s body in the woods after Casey was locked up on no bond. The judge’s deadline for the defense to produce that evidence was two weeks ago.
It never happened, but the defense is still trying to get documents from EquuSearch volunteers and trying to convince prosecutors to focus on former meter reader Roy Kronk, who found Caylee’s remains in the woods and says he first saw them there months earlier.
“The time has come to produce it. They haven’t been able to, so what do they do? They go out and keep fishing and hope like heck they catch that fish,” Sheaffer said.
Now, prosecutors might have new evidence against Casey. Investigators are looking into it and prosecutors are asking for a hearing with the judge so they can keep it a secret even from the defense until they sort it all out.

Here are the facts that have been made public concerning the first week of Renée’s disappearance. All known facts in the case cannot be published due to the ongoing death investigation being carried out by the Kansas City Missouri Police Department and the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office. • On January 2, Shon was suppose to be leaving to attend a training session with the MO. National Guard. Instead, at around noon, he got the boys from the neighbor’s and picked up his daughter from her mother’s house. Later in the evening his daughter became distraught that Renée was not there and emailed her mother around 9:30pm asking to come home. • On Saturday, January 3, approximately 4:30am, Shon left his 11, 8, and 6 year old children alone (while they were sleeping) at home to go to Fire Station #5. He used his keycard to enter Fire Station #5’s Hazmat storage area. This area stores chemicals used for clean-up of hazardous spills, etc. Shon, an EMT for the Independence, MO, fire department was assigned to Fire Station #7, and he was not even supposed to be working at that time because he was on leave to attend his MO. National Guard training. • On Saturday, January 3, the mother of Shon’s daughter picked her up, cutting short the normal visit. • On Saturday, January 3, a family member called Renée’s home to speak to Renée. Shon answered and said that he did not know where Renée was. Family members called 911. Shon Pernice has given conflicting information on when he last saw Renée. He told a family member it was on January 1. He told police it was on the morning of January 2 between 9 and 10am. • At approximately 3:00pm, family members met Officers at Renee’s home. Family members along with officers entered the residence. They discovered that no one was home. They also discovered that Renee’s purse, vehicle, personal hygeine items and coat were at the residence. They noticed that Renee’s wallet, credit cards and cell phone were missing. Renee’s vehicle was in the garage. • While at the residence a call came in to a family member from Renée’s cell phone. (It was approximately 4pm. ) A homeless man had found the phone at approximately 1am that morning (1/3/09) on the ground in the northeast part of KCMO, approximately 12 miles from Renée’s home. Police sent a patrolman to pick up Renée’s phone from the homeless person. The family filed a missing person report while at the residence. • Shortly after the call Shon and 2 attorneys came in the house and ordered the family and police to leave. Shon’s attorneys said that Shon would not be speaking to family members or the police except through his attorneys. • On Sunday, January 4, Renée’s family immediately printed up posters and began posting flyers. They also searched portions of Kessler Park close to where Renée’s cell phone was found. In addition, they contacted the local news stations asking if they would broadcast the news of Renée’s disappearance. • On Monday, January 5, Detectives found divorce documents at Renée’s place of employment. They also found a photo of Shon with one of the children and an unknown woman in the file. • On Tuesday, January 6, in the evening, Shon drove to Line Creek Park, approximately 1.5 miles from Renée’s house and let the family dog out of the van and left. Detectives who were observing Shon retrieved the dog. • Shon Pernice has not cooperated with police and will only speak through his attorneys. On January 21, 2010, Renée's mother, Linda Lockwood, and her step-father, Doug Lockwood, were awarded legal guardianship of her two sons. The Lockwoods would like to give special thanks to their attorney, Mr. James Ralls, Jr., for the outstanding job he performed with this difficult action. A Golf Tournament was held Saturday, September 26th at Hoot's Hollow in Pleasant Hill with proceeds going to the "Justice for Renée" fund. Morgan Dana Harrington went missing from a Metallica concert in Charlottesville, Virginia. Her body was discovered on a remote farm outside Charlottesville around January 26, 2010, more than 100 days after she disappeared on October 17, 2009. The following is in memory of Morgan, and a plea that if anyone knows who was responsible for her death, to please do the right thing, and come forward, bring what you know to the authorities, and help Morgan's family get some closure.

The world has lost its best hugger. The incomparable Morgan Dana Harrington was torn from us on October 17, 2009.
Morgan, age 20, was a shiny, loving, beautiful original. She was very much loved by her family, her friends, and her community, which has now expanded to include much of the world. We cherish the time we had with Morgan and are grateful for the breadth and variety of experiences we were able to share in her tragically abbreviated life.
Morgan was born on July 24, 1989 in Charlottesville, Virginia and killed there in October 2009. She was an avid music fan, a champion of children’s rights, and planned a career in education.
To recognize some of Morgan’s passions we ask that, in lieu of flowers, gifts to honor Morgan’s memory be made to the Morgan Dana Harrington Memorial Scholarship at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine or to OMNI – Orphan Medical Network International, an organization that provides medical care in Africa. Writing with astonishing insight and restraint, Gil Harrington, Morgan’s mother, said that we in Charlottesville live inside a bubble. We are a self-satisfied lot. “I am concerned about the complacency in Charlottesville,” she wrote on January 23 on FindMorgan.com. “I am feeling a tendency to downplay Morgan’s abduction, to protect the idyllic reputation of the city. I bought into that idyllic image until my daughter was stolen there.”

Most of this terrible puzzle remains to be solved, including the critical sequence of events that occurred outside the John Paul Jones Arena that night, and why a clearly disoriented Morgan was denied re-entry to the building—why she was shut out, despite her erratic conduct and widely reported attempts to regain entry to the facility. A call about Morgan to Carol Wood, assistant vice-president for public affairs at the University of Virginia, was unreturned. No representative of the management company that operates JPJ on behalf of UVA has made a public statement about the events of October 17, 2009.

For many, Morgan’s attempt to get back inside the building was a cry for help, a last chance to save her. So what happened, and should the Commonwealth of Virginia, which owns the arena, take a hard look at re-examining its now controversial no-re-entry policy?

“Morgan is the poster child for the need to re-evaluate that policy,” said Matthew B. Murray, one of Charlottesville’s most eminent attorneys. “The policy of non-re-admittance has to be examined.”

Whoever killed Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington and left her body on a remote farm knew the tricky "obstacles" to get to the location, Virginia police said today.

Morgan Harrington was last seen at a Metallica concert in Virginia with friends.

Virginia State Police Lt. Joe Rader asked at a press conference today for people who live in the area to alert investigators to whoever was familiar with the roads and terrain there.

Rader said investigators believe the person or persons responsibile for Harrington's murder was familiar with the area on Anchorage Farm where the 20-year-old's body was found.

"People in the Anchorage Farm area, you know what goes on there, you know the history," said Rader. "You know who comes in and out of the vicinity and you might not realize it but you probably have some information for us that you don't even think is important."

"We encourage you, pick up the phone and call us," said Rader, also offering a special phone line, 434-709-1685 , that has been set up for tips.

Anchorage Farm is in Albemarle County about 10 miles south of where Harrington was last seen at a Metallica concert. Her body was discovered by the owner of the farm on Oct. 17. Harrington's death was ruled a homicide on Wednesday, but her cause of death has not yet been determined.

Rader went on to list several points of interest about the location and the significance of the location that he said he was offering in hopes of getting a response from the community.

Among the items in Rader's list was information about the "obstacles" that a person unfamiliar with the farm would have faced trying to get to the stop where Harrington was found.

"The choice of that particular location is quite different than if the person responsible had chosen the public highway or the shoulder," said Rader. "This particular location would have been a high risk location unless you're familiar with the area."

More than 100 days passed from the last time Morgan Harrington was seen alive, to when her skeletal remains were found. While it may seem investigators don’t have much to work with, a forensic science expert weighs in on what could help lead to a suspect.

“From a little piece of bone, you can find a suspect.“, says Dr. Tod Burke. Burke is a forensic science expert at Radford University. He is not associated with the Harrington case.

“Anytime you have remains, that’s of forensic value.“, says Burke. “Sure it would be ideal for an investigator to just approach the scene and have a fresh body.“

Burke says a suspect might assume a remote location, like where Morgan’s remains were found, would guarantee a body would never be found. He says the location, however, could work to the suspect’s disadvantage.

“It’s not heavily traveled. So you don’t have a lot of people coming and going.“, says Burke. “Whereas if a body were dumped in a suburban or city area where you have a lot of movement, the chances of being seen are greater but the forensic value may be contaminated.“

The massive snow, that likely covered the remains and delayed searches for Morgan, could preserve a body. Warmer temperatures could speed up decomposition.

“There was hot weather, there was warm weather, there was cold weather all could play a role in body decomposition.“, says Burke.

Burke says animals can contaminate a crime scene, but could also help in an investigation. He says that’s because animals can carry pieces of evidence from remote locations, to places where someone will find them.

Burke says don’t discount the possibility of DNA evidence, especially on any clothing Morgan was still wearing when she was found.

He’s confident whether it’s days from now, or years, we will find out what happened to Morgan.

“The forensic evidence is there.“ says Burke. “A suspect is there.“

What Susan Powell's Friends and Family Want Us to Know

I have my own personal suspicions as to what happened, as well as probably thousands of other people do. To me, it is so obvious what happened, it's sickening to realize that the police haven't acted on it anymore than what they have.

To Susan Powell's family and friends, I hope you know my prayers are with you, and I pray that justice be served.

Joshua Powell’s sister-in-law, Jennifer Graves, and her husband Kirk, are disappointed and do not believe Josh has done all he can to help find his missing wife, Susan Powell.

The Graves traveled from their home in Utah to Washington State Friday to visit family and to have dinner with Josh and his two sons, Charlie, now 5, and Braden, now 3.
The topic of Susan and her disappearance were not discussed.
When Kirk was asked if the topic came up after dinner he declined to answer.
Both Jennifer and Kirk have changed their tone toward Josh and have grown increasingly disappointed. Jennifer says Josh's demeanor toward her and her family have completely changed since Susan disappeared and that while Josh used to be very talkative he hardly ever talks now. The Graves do not believe Josh has done all he can to help find his wife. "I've been disappointed with his efforts. He hasn't put enough effort in, in my opinion," Jennifer Graves said. "He's chosen to work away from the media, which is our biggest tool right now."

And today, they’ve decorated her house in purple ribbons, her favorite color. Josh was not present at the house when it was being decorated. Critics ask, “Isn’t that trespassing?”

Josh moved to Washington Jan. 11 after he lost his job and felt he would not find work again in his community.
Now everyone is trying to get back into normal routines, but that’s not going to be easy so long as Susan is missing.
"It's going to be awhile before it gets back to normal," Jennifer Graves said. "Just keep looking. Keep looking for her."

Casey Marie Anthony was born March 19, 1986, in Warren, Ohio. Caylee's mother, has been charged with the first degree murder of her daughter.
She was first arrested on July 16, 2008 for giving false statements, neglect of a child, and obstruction of a criminal investigation with a request that she be held on a no bond status until Caylee Anthony was located. She was arrested again on August 29, 2008, on charges of forgery, fraudulent use of personal information, and petty theft for forging $700 worth of checks and using her friend's credit cards without permission. On September 5, 2008, Casey Anthony was released again on bail after being fitted with an electronic tracking device. On 14 October 2008, Casey Anthony was indicted by a grand jury on charges of first-degree murder and was arrested for the fourth time.

Casey is a sociopathic, superficial sensationalist. To a mental health professional, she fits the description of someone with an antisocial personality disorder, or in other words a sociopath.
The disorder is recognizable by a lack of concern for others, as is clearly shown by her behavior after Caylee disappeared. She did not call 911 to report her daughter missing (her mother, almost a full month after the last time that little Caylee was seen). While her daughter was missing, Casey was out partying, living it up on money she stole from a friend. (After having lied to everyone about being employed when she wasn't).
Casey has consistently displayed contempt towards authority figures, masked by a thin veneer of civility. Listening to the police tapes, it is easy to see that Casey appears to be quite respectful to the police interviewers. She portrays herself during these interviews as one who has been wronged by a (fictitious) babysitter named Zanny, who, according to her story, kidnapped her precious daughter Caylee. Casey has been, according to her and to her family, a victim herself. The problem is that Casey tried to come off appearing as a mother who was only interested in finding her child, but at the same time, all she was doing was creating one story after another, and everytime she got caught in a lie, she told another one that wound up being bigger and better than the last one. She was of no help whatsoever to the police, as one would have expected a frantic mother whose child had been missing for a month to have been.
Psychopaths are superficially charming in their ongoing attempts to get their own way. Casey has the capacity to read others quickly and recognize their vulnerabilities. Once recognized, she knows how to exploit others' weaknesses. She seems to have no qualms about violating the rights of others. Casey stole her friend's checkbook and wiped out her bank account, and not a cent of the money was spent on Caylee.

It is typical for sociopaths to engage in illegal or deceitful behaviors. Compulsive lying is the norm. Guilt and remorse are not in their vocabulary. All sociopaths are incapable of feeling sorrow or sadness for their wrongdoings and destructive behaviors. Any tears you might see are for themselves. “I am crying because I got caught, not because I am sorry for anything I have said or done.” On some level, a sociopath takes perverse pleasure in getting away with illegal, irresponsible behaviors. Yes, a sociopath takes great joy in taking from others. "Joy" is the correct word.
To a sociopath, others are always expendable: family, friends, acquaintances. Once others have been bled dry, the sociopath moves on. Loyalty is not a part of who they are. They have no desire to change and no insight into their own behaviors and motivations. Caylee is missing, but Mom is partying and lying to both her friends and family about her daughter’s whereabouts.
Sociopaths are narcissistic and exhibitionistic, with no sense of shame. Nothing exists in their world but what they want - the ultimate “Me, Me, Me” syndrome. They are characterized by an excessive superficiality, in both thoughts and behaviors. They are easily bored and made restless by day-to-day responsibilities, an attitude which makes consistent parenting a drag and an impossibility. Sociopaths create their own reality, and in this instance, Casey’s world did not include her daughter.
Casey was a parasite, living off of others. She had no high-school education, no job, no goals, no direction. But, to hear her story, she worked at Universal Studios and was attending college. A sociopath always views his or her problems as stemming from flaws in others, rather than taking responsibility for his or her own issues and the havoc they have created.
As a sociopath, Casey wants to control her own destiny and create her own reality, abhorring any form of criticism or denigration. At some point, she might experience feelings of depression. These feelings would not be because her daughter is missing or dead, but because she lacks the freedom she craves. Having been arrested and accused, she is no longer in charge of her own fate, and for a sociopath, who values freedom more than anything else, that is devastating.
Interestingly, sociopaths like Casey will expect others to attempt to belittle or use them. At times, the sociopath will willingly act in such a manner as to induce others to legitimately respond in a hostile or angry manner. Casey has repeatedly demonstrated this with her continued lying, lack of sadness about her daughter’s disappearance, and few displays of emotions related to the fact that her daughter Caylee is missing or dead. Listening to the taped interviews, one can easily discern that Casey expresses almost no emotion when discussing her daughter’s disappearance.
Sociopaths are incapable of remaining in love, or of even selflessly loving anyone. Their sex lives are most often impersonal and chaotic, and frequently they are bisexual. There is in them an emptiness, a coldness, a disconnection from others and themselves. Casey is incapable of truly understanding how much others can be made to suffer as a result of her behavior. It does not compute.
A sociopath's motto is: Competition is king, survival the agenda, and no one is ever, ever, ever to be trusted. A sociopath's mantra: “Do unto others before they do unto you.”

George and Cindy Anthony were hardly new to the 'dysfunctional family' scenario, when news coverage began to focus on their family after the disappearance of Caylee Anthony. There had been added stress upon family ties even since the birth of Caylee, because of jealousy between Casey and her mother Cindy. Each vied for 'top spot' in little Caylee's heart, according to numerous news reports. There had even been talk at some point of George and Cindy adopting the child. Apart from the obvious there, there was also stress and strain on the family from Casey's habitual stealing from parents, family members and friends, as well as lying to all of the above about a variety of topics. Cindy strikes me as the 'cover up' kind of mother; the type who puts up with the horrendous behaviors, then covers it up herself to the outside world- (in this case, the outside world also consists of various other family members that Cindy apparently tried to hide some of Casey's behavior from).

But time has a way of bringing out hidden facts, in nearly every occasion. It was no different here with the Anthony's. After tracking down her daughter, (notice- it was Cindy who is mentioned in almost every write up of the early days in the Casey/Caylee Anthony saga, Cindy alone, no mention of George until they picked up Casey's car after it had been abandoned and impounded- it was Cindy who called the police, it was Cindy who insisted on Casey's friends telling her where Casey was, etc). Then, it was Cindy who tried to retract what she said about the smell in Casey's car smelling like a 'dead body had been in there'- she tried later to say that it was because of a bag of trash in the trunk that had been in there too long in the Florida heat. (Typical of a mother trying to cover for their child's actions). In this case, of course, thankfully, Cindy's covering for Casey has done nothing more than make Cindy look like a fool- and it hasn't stopped the authorities from getting to the real truth.

By the second day we were hearing about a low volunteer turn out and how Tim was meeting with Cindy and the family at home to go over details. Casey again repeated her story about leaving Caylee with a babysitter who police have been unable to confirm even exists. Tim seemed distraught, he tried to make sense of where to look.
By the third day Tim was saying he did not believe Cayleewas alive and was asking volunteers to gather to search the woods. Cindy Anthony went on national television and claimed he was wasting his time and that volunteers where not turning out because they believe Caylee is alive.
Tim again insisted he was following all leads, but wanted to search the woods. Cindy Anthony was no longer cooperating with Tim and Equusearch, she was not participating in searches nor pleading for the volunteers that were desperately needed as most families do when their loved one is missing, instead she decided to make horrid accusations about Tim only wanting to be in the media spotlight, about Tim only wanting to profit off of her missing granddaughter.
It was exposed that Cindy alerted Tim and his group to a sighting that was reported to her about Caylee being seen in Texas and she wanted Tim and his team to go back home to Texas to search for a LIVE Caylee.
Tim refused to leave. The tip was not credible, but still he sent members of the group to seek it out.
She then released a statement accusing him of wanting funding and exposure for his organization, you know, the NON-FOR PROFIT Equusearch who has helped hundreds of families in need and who are forced to turn families down because of the high rate of missing cases. The Anthony family is obviously horribly ignorant about Tim and what he does and how privileged they are to have him there to assist them.

As of last September, over 1000 pages of documents had been released by the Florida State Attorney’s Office revealing new information about the case and the relationships of some of the key players which happens to include Cindy Anthony and Dominic Casey.

Months after the Anthony’s held the Memorial Service for little Caylee Anthony, Cindy was still asking her private detective, Dominic Casey to search for a live Caylee. There were possibly hundreds of emails between the two trying to figure out how they could get other people involved in the case (which, by the way, included Leonard Padilla , Roy Kronk, Jesse Grund and Richard Grund).
Dominic Casey emailed Cindy Anthony photos of other women that could have been Zenaida Gonzalez for her to show to Casey to try and identify. There were a lot of searches made online looking for a Zenaida Gonzalez.
Dominic Casey is also said to have spent a lot of time investigating Roy Kronk, Jesse Grund, Casey’s ex-fiance, and Jesse’s father, Richard Grund. There was a mention of Richard Grund’s strange religious beliefs that might have led them to some sort of sacrifice ritual. Cindy and Dominic Casey were also trying to make some sort of a connection between Roy Kronk and Richard Grund.
There was even a chart Dominic Casey came up with for Cindy Anthony with a lit of the ‘Characters of Interest’. They have the names, background, affiliation and an ID Picture of each one on the list.

Several of the backgrounds listed were labeled with things such as “Threats against Family” or “Accusations against Family” and even on Kathi Belich’s background they have listed, “Reporter Disseminates hatred toward family” as does Nancy’s Grace’s. They have that Leonard Padilla carries a knife at Lower Back area in a sheath, and how Robert Dick talks about being a Weapon’s expert.

At the bottom of the chart there are notes saying large groups of protesters were coming in from Kansas, Attempts will be made to conceal cell phones in their shoes, Lois Peter threat to assault Cindy, Murt Murtaugh threat to conceal Video/Audio equipment on several attendees and Wayanne Kruger will attend with others pretending to be an advocate but will be documenting for her book she is writing on the case She will be concealing a cell phone (Blackberry/IPhone?) on a baby bag. She posts trash about the family on the blog.
Also in the documents was an email from Cindy telling one of the investigators last October that Dominic Casey was not working for Casey Anthony’s defense team yet recently Dominic Casey swore under oath to a judge that he was working for the defense team when trying to get out of being questioned under oath by Zenaida Gonzalez’s attorney’s.
And another question to be asked, which I really don't remember having seen anyone bring up yet: Zenaida Gonzalez. How many times have we heard "Zanny the Nanny"? Well, we all know that Casey was apparently pretty much into drugs, drinking, etc., right? Has everyone forgotten that Zanny is also a 'street name' for the prescription drug Xanax?
Was Casey really saying in some roundabout way that "Zanny" had taken her daughter- meaning while she was messed up on Xanax is when the crime took place?

It just upsets me so every time I see a picture of Caylee Anthony and think about what an incredible waste of human life her mother has shown to be. Caylee will never get to go to school, have a best friend, go to a prom, have a brother or sister, ride a bike, sell girl scout cookies, drive her first car, grow up, get married, or have children of her own. And this is because her mother was selfishly thinking of herself and how to be able to party a little more.

All I feel that we can do now, is pray that justice is served, in whatever way our good Lord Up Above sees fit. Poor little Casey deserves that much. At least we know she is in a better place, resting safe in the arms of Jesus. And if I, along with thousands of others, am wrong and it turns out that it wasn't Casey Anthony who murdered this poor sweet child, I ask my Lord up in Heaven for forgiveness now. Somehow, I have a gut instinct that I'm not wrong.

The Unsolved Murder of April Marie Tinsley

April Marie Tinsley was a beautiful child.
Now, all that's left is a beautiful headstone marking her grave.
For too many of the years since 8-year-old April Tinsley was abducted, raped and murdered, her case has been cold. Police have had plenty of leads but no real breaks, and the atrocity has continued to haunt the community of Fort Wayne, Indiana and the surrounding areas.
April was abducted about 4 p.m. on a Friday afternoon as she walked to a friend's house through her south-central Fort Wayne neighborhood. Her disappearance prompted an immediate, massive search by 25 police and 50 neighborhood residents. A witness reported seeing a white man in his mid-30s pull April into a light-blue pickup, but neither was found.
Her body was found three days later at the bottom of a ditch along a rural DeKalb County road. The case stalled, but in May 1990, a teenage boy saw a man draw the message “I kill April Marie Tinsley. I will kill again” on a barn near the intersection of St. Joe Center and Schwartz roads. In 2003, a series of hand-written notes were left on mailboxes and bicycles threatening further killings such as Tinsley's. The notes contained misspellings and grammatical errors similar to the message left on the barn.

Eight-year-old April Tinsley was abducted, raped, and murdered on Good Friday in 1988.

The innocent face of 8-year-old April Tinsley is projected from a large screen in front of the conference room as about 50 law enforcement officials—including a special team from the FBI—begin their meeting.

April’s picture was a powerful reminder of why the group had gathered: on Good Friday 21 years ago, the young girl was abducted from her neighborhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana and then raped and murdered. Her killer is still at large.

The meeting at the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in Virginia took place because state and local Indiana law enforcement officers—who remain dedicated to solving the case—have asked for help from our Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team, known as CARD.

CARD Teams were created three years ago to bring together a variety of experts in child abduction cases who could quickly respond on the ground to help local authorities with time-sensitive investigations. Team members include:

Personnel from our Behavioral Analysis Unit, who profile offenders’ personality traits and possible motives;
Agents and analysts from our Crimes Against Children Unit;
Coordinators from the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime; and
Representatives from the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (VICAP).

CARD consists of 48 members organized into 10 teams in five regions around the country. Since the program’s creation, teams have deployed 38 times and aided in the recovery of 18 children.
As the name suggests, CARD Teams respond rapidly in cases of non-family abductions, ransom abductions, and the mysterious disappearances of children. But CARD also works cold cases, such as the April Tinsley murder. And as team members discovered, there is enough evidence—including notes, pictures, and DNA left by the killer years after the murder—to make investigators hopeful they can break the case.

It was a chilly Friday afternoon in 1988 when April was abducted walking home from a friend’s house. Her body was found three days later about 20 miles away in a rural area dotted with Amish farms. Despite an intensive search, police were unable to find her killer. Two years later, a message written in pencil or crayon appeared on a barn door not far from where April’s body had been discovered. The writer claimed responsibility for the murder.

Then, in the spring of 2004, four notes appeared at various residences in the Fort Wayne area—several placed on bicycles that young girls had left in their yards—believed to be written by the killer. The notes, all on lined yellow paper, were placed inside baggies along with used condoms or Polaroid pictures of the killer’s body. Several of the notes referred to April Tinsley.

During the spring of 2004, the killer left four similar notes at residences in the Fort Wayne area.

In 1990, two years after April Tinsley's murder, this message appeared on a barn door near where her body was recovered.

Since those 2004 notes, the killer has not been heard from. But he has left a trail of evidence that the CARD Team hopes to exploit during its deployment to Fort Wayne, tentatively scheduled for later this spring. Investigators believe the case is “highly solvable,” and after 21 years, their desire to bring April Tinsley’s killer to justice is stronger than ever.

Members of our Behavioral Analysis Unit created the profile below of April Tinsley’s killer based on case evidence and their experience with other sexual predator investigations.
The one significant advantage that we as criminal behaviorists have in looking at this case is the sheer volume of offender behavior we have to consider. This behavior has been demonstrated over the course of 16 years from 1988, when April Tinsley was abducted, raped, and murdered through 2004, when the same individual left messages claiming responsibility for April’s death as well as forensic evidence tying him to that crime.
Two tremendous clues he has provided are his age range and his race. He is Caucasian and would currently be in his 40s or 50s. Age and race are important because they give the police and the public a way to narrow the pool of possible suspects. However, the greatest benefit of being able to see the variety of behavior exhibited over a 16-year period is the way it begins to inform our opinion of the kind of offender he is (not all child sex offenders are the same). It also gives us insight into the underlying personality which drives the decisions he makes, including the way he interacts as a member of a family, a neighborhood, a community, and a workforce.
What do we know about April Tinsley’s killer? We call this individual a Preferential Child Sex Offender. By that we mean he has a long-term and persistent sexual desire for children. In this case, the offender has demonstrated a specific sexual interest in little girls who have not yet reached puberty. In other words, he is attracted to hairless, undeveloped girls. This interest will not go away. Girls between the ages of 5 and 10 would greatly appeal to him. This does not mean he cannot interact sexually with adults or even older children, but his overwhelming sexual fantasies and desires focus on young girls. He may be married; however the vast majority of Preferential Child Sex Offenders are not. If he has a long-term intimate adult partner, that partner will have an idea that this individual has a sexual interest in little girls, but may be in denial regarding the extent of that interest or his ability to act on it. This offender may establish relationships that give him access to little girls; for instance, he may date or befriend someone in the little girl’s family. Perhaps he’ll seek employment or volunteer activities that give him proximity to little girls. He will be drawn to places where children congregate—playgrounds, swimming pools, parks, etc. Wherever he goes, if a little girl is nearby, his eyes will follow her. He may go out of his way to interact with her. In an unguarded moment, he may even make a casual sexual reference about a little girl which, if overheard, would strike someone as very inappropriate such as “She’s a sexy little thing, isn’t she?” Most of us do not associate adult attention toward a child with sexual attraction. People noticing his interest in little girls, may simply interpret it as someone who just “loves kids.” This offender prefers the company of children to the company of adults and he may be socially awkward or inappropriate when interacting with adults.
A Preferential Child Sex Offender tends to collect things that serve to support his fantasies and are consistent with his sexual preferences. In this case, since our offender’s preference is for little girls, he may collect images of little girls, perhaps clothed, candid pictures or even child pornography and probably both. He may take these pictures himself or he may find them through other sources. He may also collect other items that are arousing to him and remind him of the little girls he wants. These other items could range from articles of clothing to advertisements depicting little girls to Hello Kitty items or any toys that little girls find appealing.
The public tends to think that once a person kidnaps, rapes, and kills, he will always kidnap, rape, and kill. In reality, a Preferential Child Sex Offender can engage in a lot of different behaviors that satisfy his sexual needs, but do not rise to the level of the prior offense. The offender may substitute nuisance sex offenses like peeping, indecent exposure, and leaving obscene notes or sexual items for a child to find. If the item is left in a mailbox or on the front door, the resident may think it was intended for the adult female in the home rather than the little girl who lives there. Oftentimes, these incidents are not reported because the significance of the offense is not recognized by citizens at the time. If the Preferential Child Sex offender has a criminal history, it is more likely to involve sex offenses against children.
After 2004, there has been no known activity by this offender, but we’ve seen gaps of years in his activity before (1990s) and this could be explained in a number of ways: 1) He could be institutionalized (hospital or prison); 2) He could have ongoing access to a victim that satisfies his desire for a child partner through a relationship with the adult caretaker; 3) He could have relocated or, 4) He could be deceased since June 2004.
The primary value of describing this offender is to appeal for the public’s help in identifying him. This offender has demonstrated that he has strong ties to northeast Fort Wayne and Allen County. This is where he likely lives, works, and/or shops. You may be standing next to him in line at the grocery store, sitting beside him in the pew at church, or working beside him on the production line.
We’ve said that the offender is currently in his 40s or 50s; however, if you know someone who seems to fit the characteristics described above, but is a few years older or younger, please do not hesitate to report this information. Current age—40s through 50s;
Lives and/or works in the northeast section of Fort Wayne/Allen County;
Frequents places where children are likely to be—focus on little girls;

Amber Alert Cancelled for 2 year old Virginia Boy- Aveion Malik Lewis

Amber Alert Canceled for 2 Year Old Virginia Boy

The State of Virginia canceled the Amber Alert late Tuesday (01-19) after the boy's stepfather told police that the boy was not abducted as he previously claimed. Police say they believe the boy is dead and that he apparently died before the stepfather made the initial 911 call. The stepfather is being held for questioning and no charges have been filed. The boys mother has also been questioned.

The State of Virginia issued the Amber Alert Friday morning (1-15) after the boy was reportedly abducted by the suspects from his home in Roanoke late Thursday. The boy's stepfather was knocked unconscious by the suspects and a note demanding money was left at the scene.

Aveion Malik Lewis, a black male, 2 years old, 2' 6", 26 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a yellow Sponge Bob Squarepants Footie Pajamas.

There are three suspects. The first is know as Tony, a black male in his late 20's, 6' 2", stocky build with a full beard. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie shirt, black Puffy fur collar jacket and a black du rag. The two additional suspects are described as black males, both about 5'11" and in their early to mid 20's, One was wearing a brown hat with white writing. He has a light complexion and no facial hair. The second has Dreadlocks hair a light complexion and was wearing Red baseball cap.

The suspect vehicle is a white 1990's Chevy Blazer.

The Story of Bud Foglesong: Accidental Death, Murder- What??

I first found reference to Bud Foglesong on the Citizen's Against Homicide website. The following information is from one of the newsletters the organization puts out:

On July 21, 2007, the Foglesong family was in the living room when Bud walked into the house badly burned, with skin falling off his arms and his hair red. His son, Kurt, drove him the 10 miles to the Willows Hospital. Bud told Kurt that he had gone into the nearby cabin on the family compound to use the bathroom. When he opened the front door of the cabin, it blew up, knocking him back off of his feet. Bud was air lifted from Willows to the Davis Medical Center in Sacramento (90 miles south.) He died early the next day.
Bud was born on August 4, 1947 and died at age 59. He was a MD-11, Senior Captain with World Airways and Lieutenant Colonel, USAF (ret). During his 24-year career, he obtained a Master’s Degree in National Security Affairs from the Naval Post graduate School in Monterey, CA, while becoming fluent in Arabic and French at the Defense Language Institute. He served as an Air Attaché for Defense Intelligence Agency in Rabat, Morocco. He became Detachment Commander at the U.S. Embassy in Canberra, Australia.

Bud lived with Jan, his wife of 34 years, their kids and two other families (Holzapfel), related through Jan, on the rural Holzapfel family compound. They are and have been taking part in acrimonious financial negotiations, involving the ranch and many millions of dollars. It is not an understatement to say that the Holzapfels hate the Foglesongs. There is bad blood. The compound is an isolated ranch, located one mile down a single lane dirt road, surrounded by pastures and rice fields.

The last ten days of Bud’s life were very happy. He was looking forward to retirement in two weeks. He was enjoying a visit with his youngest son, 1st Lieutenant Jed Foglesong, USMC, his first grandchild, and Jed’s wife, who were visiting from the East.

It was Bud’s habit to drive to the southern part of the Holzapfel compound when he was home from his international assignments. In this area is a large shop, a train caboose, a small storage building, a wood shop, gasoline and diesel tanks, hay barn and a duck hunter’s cabin. Bud often went into the cabin to use the bathroom.
The timing of this incident was suspicious. Eight months previously, he had been assaulted by Roy Holzapfel. Days before his death, Bud had learned that the State of California Deputy Attorney General Clifford Zall was going to file charges on Roy Holzapfel for misdemeanor battery the next week. Bud was quite pleased.

The family still wants to know what happened on July 21, 2007. Can anyone help them?

Brantley-Phillips Funeral Home in Hernando has charge. Foglesong died July 21 in Sacramento, Calif., following injuries sustained from an explosion at a family-owned cabin. He was two weeks from retirement and had accumulated over 12,000 hours of flight time during his aviation career. He had the honor of flying President George W. Bush and President Jimmy Carter during his military career. He was an MD-11 Senior Captain with World Airways. After graduating from Mississippi State University he joined the Air Force and distinguished himself as an outstanding aviator during a 24-year career. He obtained a masters degree in National Security Affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School, while becoming fluent in Arabic and French at the Defense Language Institute. He then served as an Air Attach/ for the Defense Intelligence Agency in Rabat Morocco. He later became Squadron Operations Officer at Seymour-Johnson AFB in North Carolina. He also became Detachment Commander at the U.S. Embassy in Canberra, Australia. He was a Vietnam and Gulf War veteran. He received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal and the National Defense Service Medal with one service star. He leaves his wife, Jan Foglesong; his mother, Betty Foglesong; his father, Ivan Foglesong; his daughter, Anne Foglesong; his sons, Kurt Foglesong and First Lieutenant Jed Foglesong, US Marine Corps; his granddaughter, Katheryn Foglesong; his daughters-in-law, Jennifer Foglesong and Meagan Foglesong; his siblings, Steve Foglesong and Gary Foglesong and his sister-in-law, Betty Foglesong; nephew, Steven Foglesong; nieces, Laura Dolquest, Julie McGee and Cher Foglesong.

I am a member of a victim advocacy organization in California, and find the entire scenario of the death of Bud Foglesong astonishing, to say the least. Beginning with the initial irresponsible “guess” as to the cause of death and followed by the findings and statements by the so-called “experts”. Clearly, Bud’s death was not suicide, it was not accidental, it was not natural causes. This leaves manner “undetermined” or “homicide”. A first or second-year medical student would easily conclude that the injuries sustained by Bud were not due to the igniting of an accelerant, which was supposedly accidentally poured over his body; and then accidentally lit. The “chunks” of flesh illustrated in photos clearly indicate they were caused by an explosion. How ironic that Bud’s death brought to an abrupt end planned prosecution of his nephew, Roy Holzapfel (misdemeanor battery) and possible civil action, as well. An autopsy is the “voice of the dead”. Obviously investigators (at all levels) as well as the medical examiner, turned a deaf ear to this “voice”. Any observer with an eighth grade education would conclude Bud’s death was, in no uncertain terms, a homicide. Clearly there is a cover-up unimaginable in today’s times. We live in a society of laws and no one is above the law. The person(s) responsible for Bud’s death must be brought to justice and MUST pay for this heinous murder. "Caution! Graphic photos inside … This issue is not suitable for children or sensitive adults.” So reads a warning prominently displayed on the front page of the Aug. 22 edition of the Sacramento Valley Mirror, the hard-hitting little twice-weekly out of Willows. The warning accompanies the 26th and most recent story in a series called, variously, “Who killed Bud?” or “How did Bud die?” that editor and publisher Tim Crews has been running since August 2008.
That number doesn’t include his original July 25, 2007, report on Ivan “Bud” Foglesong’s death by fire three days earlier, on July 22, 2007. And it’s going to grow. In fact, as of this writing, he has another in the works for his Wednesday, Sept. 2, issue.

Crews believes he has more than good reason for this tenacity. The law-enforcement agents who investigated the case—primarily from the Glenn County Sheriff’s Office, but others as well—so thoroughly botched the job, he says, and jumped to such “completely irrational” and “ridiculous” conclusions about the cause of Foglesong’s death, and failed so utterly to explain how the fire occurred, that he had no choice but to stay on the story.
Remarkably, he’s managed to come up with a new twist or angle to justify every one of those 26 stories in the series.
The Aug. 22 edition is a good example. It devotes the entirety of an inside broadsheet page to showing, for the first time, actual autopsy photos of Foglesong revealing the nature of the damage done to his body.
The pictures—five large color photos spread out across the page—are indeed graphic. They show sections of the corpse of a 59-year-old man who was burned over nearly 90 percent of his body. But what they also show is that Foglesong suffered several deep lacerations to his hands and forearm.
The official investigation determined that Foglesong died from burns suffered in an accident, though it wasn’t able to say just how that accident occurred. Although the lacerations are noted in the coroner’s autopsy report, they aren’t mentioned anywhere in the investigators’ case report.
Crews says he published the autopsy photos to show that Foglesong was the victim of more than a fire—that the lacerations were caused by shrapnel and that he was the victim of some kind of explosive device. In other words, that he didn’t commit suicide or die accidentally while trying to burn down the cabin, as law-enforcement officials surmised.
No, Crews charges, “Bud Foglesong was attacked.” In other words, he was murdered.
A mysterious death compounded by a flawed investigation always makes good newspaper copy. Toss in wealth and property, social prominence, a feuding family and connections to power, and you have a humdinger.
Ivan “Bud” Foglesong was married for 34 years to Jan Holzapfel, whose brother is Glenn County District Attorney Bob Holpzapfel. Her other brother is Herb Holzapfel, a widely known and influential North State farmer—he’s chairman of the board of the Farmers’ Rice Cooperative, the largest rice exporter in the state—who since the death of their father, Jerald, in 2004, has run the family’s extensive rice-growing operations.
Those operations are headquartered on a spread located off County Road 60 about three miles southeast of Willows. Several residences are clustered on one side of the property. At the time of his death, Bud and Jan Foglesong lived there, as did their daughter Anne, their son Kurt and his family, Herb and Ginger Holzapfel, and Roy Holzapfel and his family. Roy is the son of DA Bob Holzapfel, who is married to Judy Holzapfel, the president of the Glenn County Board of Education.
It was widely known in the larger community that there was bad blood between Roy Holzapfel and Bud Foglesong. Back on Nov. 5, 2006, they’d gotten in a fight, during which one of Foglesong’s fingers had been permanently maimed, potentially threatening his career as a commercial pilot.
Just days before Foglesong’s death, he and others in the family were informed that the state Attorney General’s Office, which was handling the case because of Roy Holzapfel’s family tie to the district attorney, planned soon to file charges against Roy Holzapfel for misdemeanor battery.

On top of that, Foglesong had made no secret of the fact that he intended to sue Roy Holzapfel once the criminal case was concluded.
There’d been another incident, in which, Foglesong alleged, Holzapfel rammed his vehicle into Foglesong’s and fled the scene, but no charges were filed in that case.
In addition, family money matters were unsettled. The matriarch of the family, Edith Holzapfel, had died in 1980, but her estate still wasn’t settled 27 years later. The estate of Jerald Holzapfel was also unsettled, Crews reported.
The family is quite wealthy, owning not only 1,600 acres of prime rice land locally, but also extensive property in Oregon and Canada.
Other than being married to Jan Holzapfel, Bud Foglesong apparently had little to do with Holzapfel family financial matters. He was a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel trained in military intelligence who had been piloting multi-engine jet planes for World Airways since 1994, most recently ferrying military goods and personnel into Iraq and Afghanistan. At the time of his death, two weeks before his 60th birthday, he was planning to retire in two years. He had plenty of money from his Air Force and World Airways pensions as well as investments.
He spent the day of his death driving to the Sacramento airport with his son Jed, a Marine Corps captain, Jed’s wife, Meagan, and their 10-month-old daughter, Katheryn. Jed Foglesong was deploying to Iraq in the coming days, and they were seeing him off.
When they got home that afternoon, Meagan and Jan Foglesong went shopping, leaving Bud at home with the baby, who’d been put down for a nap. When they returned, sometime around 5 o’clock, Bud said he was going to a small house on the property a little less than a mile away. The cabin, as it was called, was used as a base for duck hunting during the season and a rest area for employees otherwise.
Foglesong regularly went to the cabin in the late afternoon, apparently. “It was his way of getting out of the house for a little while,” explained Bernice Cook, who as Jan Foglesong’s lifelong best friend knew Bud well.
Meagan said she and the baby would come along, but the baby started fussing, evidently hungry. Meagan told Bud to go ahead, that she’d feed Katheryn and join him in a few minutes. But as things turned out, she wouldn’t get that chance.
What we know today is that a fire broke out in the duck cabin, apparently in an explosive manner, and that Bud Foglesong suffered fatal burns over most of his body. How the fire occurred remains a mystery.
In a written statement, Meagan Foglesong says she had just finished feeding the baby when Bud walked into the house, followed by Kurt, who had a “shocked look on his face.” She picked up the baby from her high chair and hid her face “because there was blood all over Bud and his skin was hanging off of him. Bud’s eyes were red. He looked over and said, ‘It exploded.’ ”
He was in shock, but somehow he had managed to drive back to the house. Kurt got him in a truck and drove immediately to Glenn General Hospital, where he was given emergency care before being air lifted to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.
There was never any chance that he would survive. He died early Sunday morning, July 22.
Back at the farm, Crews later reported, CalFire arson and bomb detectives were called to the cabin, which had been evenly burned throughout, except that the front appeared to have been blown out. By Monday they had determined it was arson.
No evidence of a booby trap had been found “at this time,” Sheriff Larry Jones told Crews.
Foglesong’s body was autopsied on Wednesday, July 25. “In addition to the exact cause of death, detectives are looking for burn patterns and other indications of exactly how the arson and explosion hit Mr. Foglesong and where he was in the house,” Crews wrote.

Crews stayed interested in the story, but he didn’t initiate his series until Aug. 9, 2008, more than a year later. The first installment was headlined, “How did Bud Foglesong die?”
By this time the case had generated more than 200 pages of investigative material, including an arson report that had taken seven months to complete. But when Crews read the material, he was astonished to discover how incomplete and shoddy, in his opinion, the investigation had been.
He noted, for example, that vital evidence—Bud Foglesong’s shirt and two coffee cans that had been present in the cabin right after the fire and may have contained accelerant—was missing.
He also lamented that a full coroner’s inquest, taking sworn testimony from all involved parties, had not been conducted.
He noted that, although one “trusted lawman”—later named as Sheriff Jones—called the Valley Mirror offices and said that Foglesong was killed in an explosion at the cabin, “By the next day, following rumors being circulated on the ranch, everyone was blaming the victim, Ivan Foglesong, who was quite dead.”
One deputy had surmised that Foglesong “just snapped.” Others theorized that he’d tried to burn down the cabin and gotten caught in the fire. But there was no evidence to support these theories—no victim profile, no assessment of motive (Foglesong’s or others’), certainly no physical evidence, and only a “cursory examination” of tensions within the Holzapfel family.
“In coming issues we’ll go through the evidence bit by bit,” Crews promised.
In subsequent articles over the following months, Crews did just that. He noted, for example, that during the initial investigation nobody seriously interviewed the family members who had been with Bud Foglesong on the day he died. His daughter Anne, who was the last person to speak with him, was interviewed a full six months after the fire, and only after the family insisted she be debriefed.
He pointed out unexplained facts, such as that a CalFire investigator had found evidence of gasoline on Foglesong’s clothing, but a state Department of Justice investigator had found none on the cabin’s carpet. How was that possible?
He noted that the original fire investigator on the case, George Morris III, was a rookie doing his first investigation, and that at one point he was unable to test for the presence of gasoline because the batteries on his testing machine had run down.
Another problem: Evidence such as clothing was not packed in sealed containers for eight hours, and the chain of custody was unclear.
Nurses and others who treated Foglesong were not interviewed. They could have testified that, though he was in terrible pain, he did say several times that the cabin had exploded.
Although the Sheriff’s Office had been given a list of a dozen experienced forensic fire investigators, it didn’t call on any of them. (Jones later said it was because they were unavailable or didn’t want to work for a law-enforcement agency, preferring more lucrative private-insurance work.)
Cell phone records that would have helped indicate where members of the family were and with whom they talked when they learned of the fire were not examined.
No one person was ever consistently in charge of the investigation. “Instead, it bounced from person to person, in no apparent order.”
And so on. Crews came to his own conclusion about the case: Investigators early on decided that it was an accident and therefore did little to eliminate all other possibilities, including foul play.

“The theory was that Bud Foglesong, honored military officer, father and grandfather, splashed gasoline around a nearly valueless duck club cabin in an effort to hurt relatives with whom he was feuding.
“Why would he burn down something nearly valueless, rather than, say, an equipment shed?
“ ‘Well,’ shrugged a sheriff’s investigator, ‘maybe he just snapped.’ ”
Maybe so, Crews said, but if investigators believed that happened, or even that it might have happened, they were obliged to substantiate it—by doing a profile of the victim, by examining how he spent his last 72 hours, by talking with family members, friends and professional colleagues about his state of mind and propensity for such an action.
That wasn’t done.
The only people formally interviewed during the initial phases of the investigation—“taken downtown,” as Crews puts it, for formal taped and transcribed interviews—were two farm employees, Benny Burley and his son, Bobby, a summer employee and “ranch volunteer of sorts.” They were interviewed in October, more than 90 days after the fire.
The two men said they had stopped at the duck cabin approximately a half-hour before the fire to use the bathroom. They had seen nothing amiss and not smelled any gasoline or other flammable substance.
Their statements became a cornerstone of the subsequent determinations made by sheriff’s investigators. Their argument was that nobody had been seen in the vicinity of the cabin in the 30-minute window between the time the Burleys were there and the arrival of Bud Foglesong, so it was clear the latter was alone when the fire broke out.
Since he was the only person there at the time, ipso facto, Bud Foglesong caused the fire, either by deliberately setting himself ablaze—as at least one sheriff’s investigator told the family—or by accident, presumably while trying to burn down the cabin.
But, as family friend Bernice Cook told this reporter, it was perfectly possible to use the bathrooms at one end of the cabin without knowing what was going on at the other end, two rooms away.
It was also possible for someone to lie in wait there, knowing Bud Foglesong regularly visited the cabin in the late afternoon.
She’s not saying that happened, only that it was a possibility that was never fully examined.
It would be hard to find two men less alike than Tim Crews and Larry Jones. Crews is a bear of a man with a Santa Claus beard who, out of necessity as well as for comfort, holds his trousers up with suspenders. He often wears a T-shirt with the Valley Mirror flag printed on it, along with the phrase “Working Press.” It comes in handy for gaining access to crime and accident scenes, though by now every cop in Glenn County knows him.
Jones, in contrast, is a compact man of medium height with thinning hair whose only personal adornment is a salt-and-pepper moustache. He appears to be in his mid-50s. He grew up in Glenn County and has worked there as a cop all his adult life. He was appointed sheriff when Bob Shadley retired in 2004 and won election in his own right in 2006. He’s up for re-election next year.
The Valley Mirror endorsed his candidacy in 2006, but seems unlikely to do so again. In fact, Crews and Jones are hardly talking these days. They’ve been in the deep freeze for months, since Crews began his series on Bud Foglesong’s death.
Jones did respond to a set of written questions Crews provided him, but neither his answers nor Crews’ analysis of them does much to clarify the matter.

The sheriff does acknowledge errors were made. “Could it have been done better?” he asks. “Yes it could. No investigation is perfect. Did my staff slack off? No they did not. Do I have faith in their abilities? Yes I do. They are good honest cops doing a very difficult job. Did any errors or omissions alter the outcome of the investigation? No they did not.”
He expresses sympathy for Foglesong’s family, says he understands they want answers, but adds, “We, with the evidence and expertise at hand, have come to the end of the investigation. However, should at any time credible information come forth that would allow us to proceed in a different direction, we would do so without hesitation and with immediate dispatch.”
That was in early October of 2008. Just before Christmas that year, the sheriff announced he was reopening the case, that he would supervise it himself, and that he was bringing in retired Chico Police Department investigator Sgt. Sharon O’Quin to work on the case.
But nothing much happened. Last week Jones said O’Quin was still working the case, but so far there’s been little or no movement.
Besides, he added, “The merits of the case all point to that [Foglesong] was the only one who could have started the fire.”
“There’s no new evidence,” he said. “Our original assessment still stands. The pressure has been put back on us, but we have to rely on the expertise of experts in the field, and they all came to the same conclusion.”
The window of opportunity for somebody to get into the cabin and set a booby trap, along with the unlikelihood that anyone “would know Mr. Foglesong was going to enter the cabin—well, it was purely happenstance that he was there”—make the booby-trap theory highly improbable.
Should new and significant evidence emerge, it would be explored, Jones said.
Asked how he felt about Tim Crews’ refusal to drop the story, Jones said he would make no personal comment. “The family have my deepest sympathy,” he said. “I can only speculate about Tim Crews’ tenacity.”
Crews, for his part, stated bluntly, “If chunks of flesh gone from an obvious explosion aren’t enough to get him to reopen it, I don’t know what is.”
He added that he doesn’t pretend to know who killed Foglesong. What he knows is that Glenn County investigators utterly failed to investigate the case properly.
Jan Foglesong has moved to northern Mississippi, where her late husband’s family lives. Her daughter, Anne, is attending the University of Mississippi in Oxford.
Reached by phone, she said she moved partly out of fear. The sequence of events—Roy Holzapfel’s alleged assault on Bud Foglesong, the alleged vehicular hit-and-run, and Bud’s terrible death—were followed a few weeks later by a frightening act of vandalism. Somebody burned a 25-foot “X” on her lawn. The sheriff came out and looked at it, she said, “but nothing happened.”
It was enough for her, though. She left Willows soon afterwards.
She said she was deeply grateful for Tim Crews’ persistence: “We’d be dead in the water without Tim. This case would be long gone and forgotten.”
She doesn’t pull any punches when talking about the investigators on the case. “Glenn County is unbelievable,” she said. “They’re not into solving it.”
Instead of keeping an open mind, the detectives “listened to my brother [Herb Holzapfel] and my nephew [Roy Holzapfel], overlooking the fact that my nephew was going to be indicted the following week.
“Sheriff Jones is a gutless wonder. Really. He’s afraid to do anything. … It’s so frustrating. You just want to grab them and shake them.”
She’s hired an attorney and refuses to give up. Her goal is to get a U.S. Attorney’s Office to pick up the case. As it stands, the $100,000 reward the Foglesong family began offering in September 2008 “for information leading directly to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of Ivan ‘Bud’ Foglesong” has yet to be claimed.
And, by the time you read this, Tim Crews will have published article No. 27 in his series. He said it would have to do with the shorts Foglesong was wearing when the cabin exploded, and the fact that the investigators kept referring to them as “pants” and “trousers.”

Willows — Sheriff-Coroner Larry Jones has identified an experienced person to conduct a coroner’s inquest into the death of Ivan “Bud” Foglesong, who was killed in a fiery explosion here in 2007.
Mr. Foglesong was the brother-in-law of Glenn County District Attorney Bob Holzapfel, whose son was to be arraigned on assault charges within a day or so of the killing of the 59-year-old U.S. Air Force veteran.
The move to a coroner’s inquest, which was suggested by Detective Travis Goodwin but resisted by Lt. Rich Warren, head of the Major Crimes Unit, is now in the works. It won’t be overnight, the department is racked with a budget crisis and is challenged by nine jailers or sworn officers out on disability, unfilled vacancies, a bailiff hospitalized and others out on sick leave.
Still, the sheriff confirms that he is reaching out to the Contra Costa County Sheriff-Coroner in hopes of borrowing the man there with broad experience in inquests.
When Bud Foglesong, a retired tanker pilot and instructor and airline pilot, opened the door to a duck hunters’ cabin on the warm evening of July 21, the place exploded. Unnoticed by deputy coroners at the autopsy were numerous shrapnel wounds on Mr. Foglesong’s arms and hands. Experienced observers contacted by the MIRROR said they were sure signs of an explosion.
The Glenn County Sheriff’s Office first said that the death was suicide by arson and then, in the face of no evidence to that effect, changed the cause of death to accidental.
The sheriff was never shown autopsy photos showing the wounds and was not told of them. He was led to believe that the only injuries were those caused by burning gasoline. Even that is in question because of the chemical analysis done at and after the fire.
For the sheriff’s department, the case was sticky. They had already turned over the prosecution of District Attorney Bob Holzapfel’s son, Roy, to the attorney general. Mr. Foglesong’s left index finger was permanently damaged in a fight over decoys that Roy Holzapfel had removed from a pond.
The department, and district attorney investitures, mucked up an assault by pickup probe. D.A. investigators disregarded the obvious conflict of interest.

The deputy coroners seemed to pussyfoot around the powerful family. On top of that, evidence went missing and some family members were virtually ignored. The original investigation was done on a casual basis, with long breaks in work. The CalFire arson investigator was a new graduate of the academy on his first real assignment. When the batteries in his equipment went dead, he didn’t get them replaced.
It was, say insiders, a complete mess.
But there were those with a motive to kill Mr. Foglesong, the sheriff recently acknowledged, and now he has reopened the case, assigning a detective, Greg Felton, to it and the department’s part-time background investigator, Sharon O’Quin. Ms. O’Quin, unavailable for comment yesterday because she was in typhoon-plagued Southeast Asia on a vacation, has found a nurse in far Northern California who was in the emergency room when Lt. Col. Foglesong was brought in. He was IN EXTREMIS, a Latin phrase meaning "at the point of death", according to medical records obtained by this newspaper.
The nurse, whose location is withheld, kept notes when she moved away because she thought they might be important.
While not commonly conducted in the rural parts of the state, they are not uncommon elsewhere. The California Penal Code explains:
“Coroner to summon jury to inquire into cause of death. When a coroner is informed that a person has been killed, or has committed suicide, or has suddenly died under such circumstances as to afford a reasonable ground to suspect that his death has been occasioned by the act of another by criminal means, he must go to the place where the body is, cause it to be exhumed if it has been interred, and summon not less than nine nor more than fifteen persons, Qualified by law to serve as jurors, to appear before him
forthwith at the place (where the body of deceased is) to inquire into the cause of the death. No such person is exempt from jury duty except at the discretion of the coroner. No person shall be summoned as juror who is related to the decedent or is charged with or suspected of the killing, nor shall any one be summoned who is known to be prejudiced for or against him, but no person selected or summoned to appear as a juror is subject to be challenged by any party.”
Unlike the loosey goosey conduct of the investigation into the death of Mr. Foglesong, which saw only two formal witness interviews, inquests have powerful tools: “Witnesses. Coroners may issue subpoenas for witnesses, returnable forthwith, or at such time and place as they may appoint, which may be served by any competent person. They must summon and examine as witnesses every person who in their opinion, or that of any of the jury, has any knowledge of the facts, and may summon a surgeon or physician to inspect the body, or hold a post-mortem examination thereon, or a chemist to make an analysis of the stomach or the tissues of the body of the deceased, and give a professional opinion as to the cause of the death.”
There is no easy out:
“Witnesses compelled to attend. A witness served with a subpoena may be compelled to attend and testify, or be punished by the coroner for disobedience, in like manner as upon a subpoena issued by (the court).”
The inquest jury’s finding must be in writing. And, if they find a crime has likely occurred, another powerful tool obtains:
“Witness to be bound over, when. Recognizances. If the jury find that a murder or manslaughter has been committed, the coroner may bind over the witnesses against the accused to appear and testify before the grand jury, or a magistrate, or the superior court, and to obey all orders of such magistrate or court in the premises. Such recognizance must be in writing and must be subscribed by the parties to be bound thereby, and made payable to the people of the state of California in an amount to be fixed by the coroner, and approved by a judge of the superior court; and in case of their refusal to sign such recognizance, the coroner has power to commit such witness as in the case of examination of an accused person by a magistrate.”
