I injured my foot so I couldn't play kickball anymore, and I just had to take a break from a lot of things. I even took a leave of absence from my motorcycle club, The Centaurs. A Masters in Public Health takes a lot of time and work.

Gabby turns to family, friends and neighbors to raise money for her local AIDS WALK. Through this experience Gabby realizes she can help make a difference in a big way for people who are living with AIDS, just by walking and raising money. "Little Feet, Big Steps" is meant to encourage, motivate and inspire children. Their age does not have to impact their dreams and wishes of making a difference.

The Biohazard Tattoo and HIV Stigma

Last week I thought long and hard about the reason why someone would get a bio-hazard tattoo on their body, and then I asked myself why I would get one. I decided I would get a Biohazard tattoo not because I wanted to feel better about myself being HIV positive, but it was because I felt for the people that couldn't be open about their status. There are many reasons why a person cannot be open about their status; it could be because of their family, friends, partner/s, fear of persecution, death etc. But a lot of these reasons come from Stigma. Stigma of how one is treated when being open about their HIV status is very much alive and well. I got this tattoo for those mentioned above to help fight against HIV stigma.

Majority of Newly Diagnosed HIV Cases in Philadelphia Already Have AIDS

Every three years, the CDC puts out its HIV Surveillance Report which gives a status on infection rates by city, state, region etc. After the results of he report came out it was found that Philadelphia was ranked 24th among metropolitan area for new AIDS diagnosis. Over 75% of new HIV cases found were actually stage 3 AIDS. Currently there are about 12,000 people in Philadelphia living with HIV/AIDS.

28% of South African School Girls Are HIV-Positive

According to the BBC, 28% of South African school girls are HIV positive. This is such a travesty. The South African Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi is stating that young men are not infecting them but older men are. The South African Health Department put out this ad to engage the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Lifting Ban on HIV Organ Donating

Bans Bans Bans!!! We have bans for a lot of things in this country, but one is about to be lifted. The Senate Heath Education and Pensions Committee have approved the HOPE Act, also known as the HIV Organ Policy Equity Act. The act would lift the federal ban on transplanting HIV positive organs to HIV positive recipients.

I'm somewhat of an "AIDS denialist." For all that I have researched, read, studied and learned, I have a hard time accepting what I've "unlearned." At the same time, the passing of a close cousin and Christine Maggiore has forced me to ask myself, "If I were HIV-positive, would I have the strength of my convictions to live the life I advocate, like Christine, or would I take the path that most people take?" My mind rejects conventional wisdom on HIV and the use of HIV medications, but I don't think I would take the "holistic" route, either. I just don't understand why there can't be an alternative clinical option. Let me know what your thoughts are. Thanks!

Justin Goes Back to Basic Training

I was going through some old military things and came across a video of me in Basic Training. Of course, that was back in 1999 when I was just 19 years old. This was during the era of the policy of "Don't Ask Don't Tell." Also, since it is dated, it was on a VHS tape. I thought to myself, "Wow, I've grown a lot since then." My foster son used to express interest in the military. He said, "Dad, I want to be a Marine." Of course, his father and I tried to persuade him to join the Air Force or the Army, since I'm prior Air Force and my husband is prior Army. After that discussion I think my foster son decided to change his mind about even going into the service, but who knows, he is a teenager and may change his mind later.

Justin Learns to Relax

So, I've decided to take my doctor's orders seriously. When it comes to HIV, it is really important that one keeps their stress levels down and, unfortunately, it has been harder for me than not. I've decided to not let anything or anyone stress me out and if that means cutting people out of my life completely or putting them in another category, so be it. I also emphasize to always look after your own health. I've decided to go to bed earlier, drink less and really try to quit smoking.

Doctor's Appointment, Hypertension, Cholesterol, Diet and New Book

Recently, I went to my doctor's appointment and saw that I had borderline hypertension. The doctor also said that my T cells had dropped as well. This is NOT good. But I'm still undetectable, which is good. All my vitals were good except of course because of hypertension. I'm only 33 and someone has told me I'm much too young to have this diagnosis. Since I'm in school for my master's degree, engaging in activism and writing and having a kid on top of that, stress has been at its highest I've ever had in my life.

Spending Time With My Foster Son

Having a foster son has put a lot of things in prospective for me. Things such as the way you talk to a younger generation, facial expressions, and inflections in your voice, etc. But I know one thing that is, and always has to be, there -- and that is time.

Advice Column: Bug Chasers and Gift Givers

I have a question for you: What is your opinion about gift givers and bug chasers? I hear that there are people out there who want to spread HIV and others who are looking to get infected with HIV on purpose. I have been diagnosed with HIV for about one year now and I had to go on meds because I didn't know I had it for so long. I hate taking them, but I know I have to in order to survive. I don't know anyone who would want to go through anything that I go through or anything you go through, either. I just don't get it. Can you give me some insight?

This World AIDS Day I remember all those I've known who are infected with this disease and who have passed because of it. I was lighting my candle and a lot of faces went through my mind. Today was a day of remembrance and I stood silent. But I also left my house and took a long walk to clear my head of things. I found a clearing in a wooded area where I live and sat in the earth. I meditated and felt as if they were here with me. I want to tell them and you all that they will not be forgotten. I will always hold a candle for them, I will always run the AIDS Walk/5K Run, and I will always remember.

I found you through a search on Google for HIV. I need your help. I am an HIV-negative female. I have a best friend named David. We have been friends for sixteen years and it was back in high school that we met. We dated briefly but we decided to become friends and plus he was gay -- LOL. But the reason why I'm writing you is because he found out a couple of months ago that he was HIV-positive. When he told me I broke down and cried; we cried together for at least an hour. After that he started going out to clubs a lot and stopped calling as often. I visited him and I have never seen his house look so dirty. Dust was everywhere and he looked like hell and obviously wasn't taking care of himself. I want to know what I should do. Please let me know what you think I should do.

Back in 2006 I was diagnosed with HIV and I cried about it at first. People of course think when they are being diagnosed with HIV is that their first thought is that they are going to die, NOT I. I very first thought that made me cry was that I wasn't going to be able to have any children. At the time I didn't know about sperm cleansing at all. I felt like I was damaged goods and I thought I would never have the feeling of being a good father. With the feelings that came with my HIV diagnosis, also went the feelings that I would ever hear anyone call me Dad. After my diagnosis the idea of being a father just went away because I didn't feel like I could ever do it while being HIV positive. Let's break this down:

There are a lot of things I hope to accomplish and being HIV positive not only pushes me harder but makes me open to new things and possibilities. I love a challenge and I almost thrive on them. In February some of my friends were talking about us doing the Rebel Race. I had no idea what it was so I googled it. I watched a video of people running up steep hills, doing low crawls through mud, jumping through hurdles, etc. There were all sorts of obstacle courses and so I e-mailed my close friends and we decided to run it.

International AIDS Conference 2012 and Capital Pride Hero 2012

Pride is a great event no matter where you are, how big your pride gets or how many organizations are a part of it. This was a particularly special Capital Pride for me. I was honored as one of five Capital Pride Heroes Award Recipients. I was so surprised and happy when I got that call.

Also I'm being inducted into the D.C. AIDS Heroes Exhibit at the International AIDS Conference that is happening in Washington D.C. July 22-27. I will definitely be there for about two days at the conference because that is all I could afford.

I SO HATE ROSACEA SHE HAS GOTTEN ON MY LAST NERVE!!!! OK One day I looked in the mirror and I started seeing redness on my nose. I didn't think too much of it because even since I was a teenager my face used to break out every time the seasons change. It didn't matter what season it was my face would look like a pizza for a week's time. So after a week went by I started to see the redness grow from my nose to my cheeks. I got a little worried because this had never happened to me before. The infection was really gross, it was red scaly and dry and in some cases there would be little pimples that would show up in the redness. SO I was really worried at this point.

Every time I hear one of my friends say, "I'm going to be abstinent," I think about the reasons why they might say so. There are so many reasons. Some of the people I know decide to because of spiritual reasons, some do it because they are scared of catching HIV or an STI, and others because they suffer from low self-esteem and fear rejection. Listen, if you want to remain abstinent it is okay. I honestly think that anyone who wants to can, but do it for the right reasons.
