Swaying tassels, teardrop pearls, feathered glamour and all that jazz… if you’re into vintage there’s never been a better time to recreate the pin-up romance of a bygone era.  There’s been a huge swing towards vintage weddings in recent times, and it’s not hard to see why. For starters, there’s something deliciously elegant about having an excuse to experiment with silk mittens and scarfs, siren-red lipstick, real curls and bowler hats for the boys.  Then there’s the fact that it’s just so much fun.

Wedding trends featuring a vintage look and wedding themes based on fifties styles are a great way to really hold a memorable ceremony and celebrations for your day. When everyone from the guests to the groom have spruced up in a bit of old-time attire, it’s incredible how atmospheric the day can be – and of course for your wedding photography! There are many shops and places in and around Mackay where you can pick up some vintage gear – clothing, shoes or accessories to make your wedding really unique.

It’s nostalgic, it’s different, it’s memorable and you can really let loose in the century you’ve always wanted to see.  There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to vintage. You can adopt any era to suit your day – or even blend a few.

Vintage 20s:  The French called it the “années folles” (crazy years) and it wasn’t known as the roaring twenties for nothing .This was the age of swinging, silken, oh-so-cool elegance. Think flapper dresses, tassles, pearl strings, cloche hats and bobbled hair. A great look for fabulous vintage wedding dresses. Style icons include Coco Chanel, Louise Brooks and Al Capone.

Vintage 30s:  An age of long, wide skirts and narrow waists – or (for the first time) tailored trousers for the girls. Evening wear took on a shimmering luxury with gowns of colourful chiffon or backless halter necks. Style icons included Greta Garbo and Bette Davis.

Vintage 40s: It was the war-time era but that didn’t stop some of fashion’s most notable trends from emerging. The classic 40s was padded shoulders, a trim waist and shoulder length curled hair, styled into exquisite up-dos in the evening. Style icons were Ingrid Bergman, the sultry Rita Hayworth and Fred Astaire.

Vintage 50s: A hugely popular fashion era, the 50s are renowned for both Marilyn Monroe soft curves and glamour, and Audrey Hepburn’s sylph like style. Think anything from tight waisted polka dots to stunning off-the-shoulder gowns. Icons included Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and James Dean.

From Here to Eternity – trashing the dress is a powerful symbol of love

WHEN your wedding day is over, vows exchanged and all the formalities of marriage tucked away, what could be more fun than the ultimate romantic gesture – ripping your wedding dress to shreds?

Hold the collective gasp. It doesn’t actually have to be the wedding dress it took you 10 months to find.

There’s a new trend in town called ‘trash the dress’ , ‘drown the gown’ or ‘rock the frock’.  The intriguing idea behind it all is simple. The wedding is over. You’ve done it, you’re married, you’re in love, you’re ready for a lifetime together and you won’t need that wedding dress again.

So you get rid of it.

It’s a theory that is not for the faint-hearted.  But in reality nine out of ten brides use a ‘ costume dress’ when they rock the frock. For example, a wedding dress you find for $20 on eBay, or a gown from the local op-shop.  The symbolism is still there, and it’s a beautiful concept – you’re ready to take your love from ‘here to eternity’ and you don’t need material possessions to do it.  So, dressed in your budget-find finest, you and your loved one take part in a wild, carefree and uninhibited photo shoot, doing all the things you couldn’t on your wedding day.

Think photos on the beach – actually in the surf or swimming in the waves.
You might prefer to climb rocks, ride horses, or roll down a hill laughing like children.

It’s not for everyone, but it’s a novel idea and the result is a set of no-pretence photos that you can truly cherish, and with all of the wonderful scenery in and around Mackay and the Whitsundays – what better way could add a fantastic contrast to your beautiful wedding photography?

As with every wedding – there is a lot to do in the morning and we discretely follow the brides and grooms preparations, all of the makeup and hair styling, and the magic moment of wearing the beautiful wedding dress for the first time as it was created for. All of those small, but very special moments in time photographed naturally as they unfold.

For us as photographers, it’s not just ‘only’ the ceremony that is the ‘big’ moment of your wedding, it is also intimate – almost unnoticed moments that really create special wedding photography. Little moments like this next photograph such as Cianne reflecting on her engagement ring that speaks so much of the day that lies ahead, and of the future beyond. We think of these times as small chapters that build on the story of your journey together.

Before the actual ceremony, we went exploring around Waters Edge with Cianne – giving her a bit of a ‘breather’ from all of the hustle and bustle of the getting ready busy-ness. We always try to build in some ‘me’ time for all of our brides when being photographed – and they all really appreciate a few precious minutes by themselves, and it also provides lovely private touching moments for bridal photography.
