The Fox’s Legacy - Manifesta 9 Parallel Events
Onlangs is een industriële ruïne gevonden die opviel door zijn merkwaardige constructie. Deze vondst leidde tot een stroom van speculatieve analyses en verklaringen over haar herkomst en betekenis. Toch blijft het onduidelijk uit welke tijd zij komt en wat haar werkelijke functie is geweest. De tentoonstelling The Fox’s Legacy (De erfenis van de vos) openbaart dit vergeten erfgoed uit de Zuid-Limburgse regio. Monumenten dienen om te herinneren maar confronteren ons ook met ons vergeten. Wat gebeurde er precies, wat betekende dat en welke gevolgen had het, wie waren er bij betrokken – zijn de allereerste vragen die maar zelden tot tevreden antwoorden leiden. Dat geeft ruimte voor de verbeelding die de kloof van het verleden kan overbruggen en waar verhalen vrij over heen bewegen.

Vanuit die achtergrond stellen Haseeb Ahmed, Clifford Borress, Steven Chodoriwsky, Jasper Coppes en Ina Kwon zich in The Fox’s Legacy twee kernvragen: hoe kunnen we de transformatie van de sociale, historische en ecologische bestemmingen van ons landschap zichtbaar maken? En is het heden uiteindelijk niet meer dan de plaats van de eindeloze herhaling van de constructie, deconstructie en reconstructie van ons collectief geheugen?

Met de tentoonstelling The Fox’s Legacy neemt Jan van Eyck Academie deel aan het Parallel Events programma van Manifesta 9, de Europese Biennale voor Hedendaagse Kunst die dit jaar plaatsvindt in en rond de mijnsite van Waterschei, Genk (BE).

The Fox’s Legacy opent zaterdag 9 juni om 17:00, en loopt tot en met 30 september 2012. De tentoonstelling is geopend van maandag t/m vrijdag van 9u tot 17u. U bent van harte welkom!

The Fox’s Legacy - Manifesta 9 Parallel Events
Recently a peculiar industrial ruin was found that struck the eye due to its curious construction. This discovery led to an impulse of speculative analyses and explanations about its origin and meaning. It remains unclear what its purpose may have been, or in which period it should be situated. The Fox’s Legacy (De erfenis van de vos) reveals this forgotten inheritance of the Zuid Limburg region. Landmarks such as these might be receptacles of forced forgetting rather than commemoration. Consequently, imagination takes up space in the stories that fill in the abyss of memory.

Out of this background, Haseeb Ahmed, Clifford Borress, Steven Chodoriwsky, Jasper Coppes and Ina Kwon pose two key questions: how do we visualize the transformation of the social, historical and environmental destinations of our landscape? And what is the present but the site of a constant rehearsal of the construction, deconstruction and reconstruction of our collective memory?

With the exhibition The Fox’s Legacy, Jan van Eyck Academie takes part in the Parallel Events program of Manifesta 9, the European Biennial for Contemporary Art that takes place in and around the coalmine of Waterschei, Genk (BE).

The Fox’s Legacy opens Saturday 9 June at 17:00h and runs until 30 September. The exhibition is open from Monday to Friday from 9:00h to 17:00h. You are most welcome!

Adrien Lucca. D65 study #2, equivalences / gradients / disappearances
Het nieuwste werk van voormalig onderzoeker Beeldende Kunst Adrien Lucca, D65 study n°2, ontwikkelt verschillende geometrische objecten die omschreven kunnen worden als ‘visueel constante perpetuele geometrische variaties’. Op een afstand van 10 tot 15 meter heeft elk hierop getekend object dezelfde kleur en graad van helderheid. Dichterbij zie je echter de details en kleuren.
Lucca ontwikkelde voor het eerst een systeem om de hoeveelheid verf te kwantificeren met behulp van hellingshoeken. Hij gebruikte willekeurige getallen om de gekwantificeerde kleuren over grids te verdelen.
D65 is de naam van een standaard lichtapparaat dat direct zonlicht simuleert (witblauw, een beetje zoals Noord-Europees licht) en dat veel in de auto- en kunststofindustrie wordt gebruikt.

The latest work by former Fine Art researcher Adrien Lucca, D65 study n°2, develops several geometric objects that can be defined as “a visually-constant perpetual geometric variation.” At 10 to 15 meters of distance, every object has the same color and lightness, as you get closer, details and colors appear.
For the first time here Lucca developped a system to quantify the amount of paint using gradients, and used random numbers to distribute the quantified colors into grids.
D65 is the name of an standard illuminant that simulates sunlight (its is whitish-bluish, a bit like the light in north Europe) which is widely used in the car and plastics industry.

Grote Prijs van de Stad Oberhausen voor Mich’ael Zupraner
Snow Tapes, een korte film van onderzoeker Ontwerpen Mich’ael Zupraner, heeft de Grote Prijs van de Stad Oberhausen gewonnen tijdens het 58e Internationale Korte Film Festival Oberhausen. De jury: “In dit werk, dat blijk geeft van een sterk gevoel voor politieke urgentie en complexiteit, geeft de kunstenaar een camera aan een Palestijnse familie in de zwaar bezette stad Hebron. Zupraner kiest echter niet voor een eendimensionaal portret van een politiek conflict, maar compliceert het leven van de kijker met een gespleten scherm waarin deze zichzelf niet alleen geconfronteerd ziet met de gewelddadige realiteit van de bezetting, maar ook met de vreugde van het slachtoffer als dat in staat blijkt agressief te zijn; met de ambivalentie van het gooien van sneeuwballen als tegelijk speels en gewelddadig; met de Israëlische regisseur zelf als iemand die profiteert van het Palestijnse lijden. Het resultaat - rauw en ruw, maar ook subtiel en suggestief - zorgt eerder voor een herconfiguratie van de film als een actief middel voorbij de tegenstelling tussen subjectief en objectief, dan dat het genoegen neemt met een passieve politieke rol.”

Grand Prize of the City of Oberhausen for Mich’ael Zupraner
Snow Tapes, a short film by Design researcher Mich’ael Zupraner, won the Grand Prize of the City of Oberhausen at the 58th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen. The jury stated: “In this work, with a strong sense of political urgency and complexity, the artist provided a Palestinian family with a camera in the heavily occupied city of Hebron. But instead of a one-dimensional depiction of a political conflict, he complicates the viewer’s life with a split screen in which we are confronted not only with the violent reality of the occupation, but also with the glee of the victim when he is able to be aggressive, with the ambivalence of throwing snowballs as something both playful and violent, and with the Israeli director himself as someone who stands to gain from representing Palestinian suffering. The result, while raw and rough at the edges, is both subtle and evocative, and reconfigures cinema as an active agent beyond the subjective-objective division rather than settling for a passive political role.”

Jan van Eyck go shapes - solving pictures
On 8 May, Jan van Eyck go club welcomes a second series of guests. Starting from morphogenesis and the way shapes are generated and constructed by living beings, the talks will tackle the cellular automata studies - especially the Game of Life by John Horton Conway - and the importance of death in modern cell biology (apoptosis). The meeting will try to define the word ‘shape’ in the context of the go game and solve pictures (Tsumego, problems of life and death). Based on this very particular perceptual state that is required for playing the go game, a gestalt for go could be sketched.

Van 10 tot 13 mei 2012 nodigt de conferentie Marx and the Aesthetic theoretici en kunstenaars, waaronder Rainer Ganahl, Boris Groys, Kristin Ross en Phil Collins, uit om de onlosmakelijke verbondenheid tussen het esthetische en het politieke in het werk van Marx te exploreren.

Het thema van deze conferentie is tweeledig: aan de ene kant het analyseren van de rol van het esthetische in het werk van Marx, aan de andere kant het bestuderen van werken uit de kunst en literatuur die gebaseerd zijn op of geïnspireerd door Marx’ geschriften. De poging een beeld te vormen van de immanente relatie tussen de esthetische en emancipatoire opvattingen van politiek, vormt dan ook de kern van deze conferentie.

Marx and the Aesthetic
From 10 to 13 May 2012, the conference Marx and the Aesthetic gathers theorists and artists, among whom Rainer Ganahl, Boris Groys, Kristin Ross and Phil Collins, to explore how the aesthetic and the political are immanently related in the work of Marx.

The theme of this conference is twofold. Opening Keep the Ghosts Away groot succes
Afgelopen vrijdag openden Rik Meijers, Keetje Mans en Jowan van Barneveld onder grote belangstelling hun tentoonstelling Keep the Ghosts Away - behalvede titel van de tentoonstelling ook van een nummer van hun band Black Velcro. Met een optreden zorgden ze vrijdag voor een uitbundig feestje in de entreehal van de Jan van Eyck, zo beaamde ook ZwartGoud op haar website. Miste je dit ‘puntige punkpop’-optreden, dan krijg je een nieuwe kans tijdens het KunstTourweekend. Vrijdag 25 mei speelt Black Velcro opnieuw in de Jan van Eyck. De tentoonstelling Keep the Ghosts Away is nog te bezoeken tot en met 31 mei.

Last Friday Rik Meijers, Keetje Mans and Jowan van Barneveld opened their exhibition Keep the Ghosts Away at the Jan van Eyck. The opening was topped off with a performance by Black Velcro, the band of Rik, Keetje and Jowan. A report of this exciting evening can be found on the website of ZwartGoud. Next Saturday, Emanuele Coccia will be the guest of the Jan van Eyck Academie. His lecture, entitled Sensitive Life, Coccia will focus on the ontological status of sensible images and on the possible relationship to the entire sensitive sphere.

We consider that we are rational beings, animals endowed with language and knowledge, yet human life is always a sensible one, and no human activity can take place without and outside the relation with a sensible form. We speak out sounds, we lend our body an appearance with specific colours and most of the gestures we make, also those we classify normally as intellectual, rational or spiritual, consist of this chiseling a form of the sensitive life. We devote most of our being to the world swimming in this sensitive live and producing sensitive life.
In order to draw a new phenomenology of our sensitive life Coccia will focus on the ontological status of sensible images and on the possible relationship to the entire sensitive sphere.

Provinciale Erepenning voor Piet Killaars
Op 27 april 2012 ontving Piet Killaars, oud-deelnemer aan de Jan van Eyck Academie, de Provinciale Erepenning uit handen van gedeputeerde Noël Lebens. De penning is aan Killaars toegekend uit waardering voor zijn grote bijdrage aan de moderne kunst en zijn voorbeeldrol voor veel jonge kunstenaars in Limburg. Tot eind juni toont het Gouvernement aan de Maas een selectie beelden van Killaars. meer info

Provincial Medal of Honour for Piet Killaars
On 27 April 2012, deputy Noël Lebens handed out the Provincial Medal of Honour to Piet Killaars, former participant at the Jan van Eyck Academie. Killaars received the medal in appreciation of his large contribution to modern art and his exemplary nature for many young artists in Limburg. Until the end of June, a selection of works by Killaars will be on show at the Gouvernement aan de Maas.

This Sunday, the Jan van Eyck Academie welcomes Claire Colebrook, Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English at Penn State University (US). Colebrook will examine Deleuze and Guattari’s concept ‘becoming-woman’ and the various ways to read this concept.

Unfortunately this lecture is cancelled.

There are two ways, at least, to read Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of becoming-woman. The first is to see it as a historical context in which the women’s movement would begin to erode the figure of a centralized human reason, but would then give way to more complex and genuinely post-human modes of considering life beyond genders and genres. Sexual difference would be queer, not by deviating from genders but by deviating from all genres and stabilities. The second mode would be to read becoming-woman as an eternal concept of recurrence, as a way of avoiding what Deleuze and Guattari refer to elsewhere as the ‘cancerous’ body without organs. Here, becoming-woman would articulate a problem of relation, of a becoming always attracted by traits or quantities. Sexual difference would be queer not by being counter-normative nor by being destructive of closed forms, but by creating and releasing traits and pure predicates. In her lecture, Colebrook will argue for the second mode, while nevertheless bearing in mind the risks and desires of becoming-woman as a historical notion.

Keep the Ghosts Away
Onder de titel Keep the Ghosts Away presenteren Rik Meijers, Keetje Mans en Jowan van Barneveld hun werk in One-on-One, de tentoonstellingsruimte van de Jan van Eyck Academie. Rik Meijers is oud-deelnemer aan de JVE; hij nodigde Keetje Mans en Jowan van Barneveld uit voor deze groepstentoonstelling.

Wat de kunstenaars verbindt, is dat zij in hun werk door de schone schijn van de werkelijkheid heen dringen en onderliggende, wankele lagen van de mens blootleggen. Zij tonen onnoembare angst, onzekerheid, dubbelzinnigheid, onbepaaldheid. Het werk suggereert heftige, gruwelijke gebeurtenissen die zich of net afgespeeld hebben of in aantocht zijn. Het is alsof de kijker in de wachtkamer van de verschrikking wordt uitgenodigd en zijn tijd moet uitzitten.

Keep the Ghosts Away is te zien tot en met 31 mei 2012. Tijdens de opening, aanvang vrijdag 27 april om 17:00 uur, spelen Rik Meijers, Keetje Mans en Jowan van Barneveld met hun band Black Velcro.

De tentoonstelling is geopend van ma t/m vr van 9:00 - 17:00 uur en gedurende het eerste en laatste weekend van 13:00 - 17:00 uur.

Keep the Ghosts Away
This month, Rik Meijers, Keetje Mans and Jowan van Barneveld present their work in One-on-One, the exhibition space of the Jan van Eyck Academie. Rik Meijers is a former participant of the JVE; he invited painters Keetje Mans and Jowan van Barneveld to take part in this group exhibition.

The artists are connected by their ability to pierce the outer appearances of reality and expose the underlying, instable layers of humanity. They depict indescribable fear, insecurity, ambiguity, indefiniteness. The work suggests vehement, horrifying events that have just occurred or are about to happen. It is as if the viewer is invited into the waiting room of terror and has to serve his/her time.

Keep the Ghosts Away opens on Friday 27 April at 17:00h. At the opening Rik Meijers, Keetje Mans and Jowan van Barneveld will perform with their band Black Velcro.

The exhibition is open until 31 May, from Monday to Friday from 9:00 - 17:00h and during the first and last weekend from 13:00 - 17:00h.

Has the World Already Been Made? at Merge Visible
In November 2011, Haseeb Ahmed and Daniel G. Baird collaborated on the piece Has the World Already Been Made?, produced and exhibited at the Jan van Eyck Academie. Now the piece will be included in the exhibition Merge Visible at Prairie Productions, 1314 West Randolph Street, Chicago IL (US), opening on 19 April 2012. The show is part of a series of experimental exhibitions organised by curator Joshua Citarella.

Kan de subaltern of ondergeschikte een aanjager van strijd zijn? Wat zijn de politieke implicaties van de stijgende interesse in marginaliteit en subalterniteit in de academische wereld en de kunst? Het symposium Relocating Subalternity wil de grenzen en mogelijkheden van het klassieke begrip subalterniteit verkennen. Hoe verhoudt subalterniteit zich tot agency en subjectiviteit? Wat zijn de mogelijke snijvlakken tussen subalterniteit en andere vormen en ervaringen van subjectivering?

De conferentie zal ruimte bieden aan een politieke en theoretische confrontatie tussen verschillende conceptuele en normatieve posities die opduiken in de feministische, postkoloniale en queer theorie. Sprekers zijn Sara de Jong, Nikita Dhawan, Elsa Dorlin, Dhruv Jain, Jamila Mascat, Jasbir Puar en Asha Varadharajan. Srila Roy is helaas verhinderd; de organisatie heeft Sara Motta bereid gevonden haar plaats in te nemen. De affiche voor de conferentie is ontworpen door Ina Kwon.

Relocating Subalternity
6 & 7 April 2012

The symposium Relocating Subalternity aims to explore both limits and potentialities of the classical notion of subalternity. How does subalternity relate to agency and subjectivity? What are the possible intersections between subalternity and other forms and experiences of subjectivation? Can the subaltern become an agent of struggles? What are the political implications of the increasing interest on marginality and subalternity in academia and art?

The conference will be a space for political and theoretical confrontation among different conceptual and normative positions that emerged in feminist, postcolonial and queer theory. Speakers will be Sara de Jong, Nikita Dhawan, Elsa Dorlin, Dhruv Jain, Jamila Mascat, Jasbir Puar, and Asha Varadharajan. Unfortunately, Srila Roy will not be able to join; the organisation has found Sara Motta willing to take her place. The poster for this conference was designed by Ina Kwon.

Lezing door Pierre Leguillon
De Franse kunstenaar Pierre Leguillon werd in 1969 geboren. Voor zijn lezing aan de Jan van Eyck Academie brengt hij drie belangrijke onderzoeksstromen in zijn werk samen: beelden in performance (de ‘mise en scène’ van beelden); de kunstenaar als instituut; en de overlappende figuren van de kunstenaar en de verzamelaar. De aandacht zal uitgaan naar allerlei verschillende zaken, zoals diavoorstellingen, posters, houten dansstangen, een eendaagse krant, het plein bij het Centre Pompidou, filmtitels, of ansichtkaarten met een gekleurde achtergrond. Leguillon werd door Christophe Lemaitre uitgenodigd voor de afdeling Beeldende Kunst van de Jan van Eyck. Hij presenteert zijn lezing op woensdag 4 april om 18:00.

Lecture by Pierre Leguillon
French artist Pierre Leguillon was born in 1969. For this lecture at the Jan van Eyck Academie, he will develop a talk based on three strong research areas in his work: performing pictures (the ‘mise en scène’ of pictures), the artist as an institution, and the overlapping figures of the artist and the collector. He will discuss a whole range of items, including slideshows, posters, wooden dance bars, a one-day newspaper, the Centre Pompidou piazza, movie titles, or postcards with coloured backgrounds. Leguillon has been invited by Christophe Lemaitre for the Jan van Eyck Fine Art department. He will present his lecture on Wednesday 4 April at 18:00.

Theorieweek april
De maand april gaat van start met een nieuwe theorieweek. Op het programma dit keer leesgroepen over Benjamin en Simondon op dinsdag 3 april en de seminars Logic en After 1968 (op woensdag), CLiC en Hegel (op donderdag). Het seminar van After 1968 is getiteld “Deleuze’s Spinoza: The underground current of the philosophy of immanence”. De bijeenkomst borduurt voort op het vorige seminar, waarin werd besproken in hoeverre Macherey - in zijn boek Hegel or Spinoza uit 1979 - Althussers lezing van Spinoza aanvult door het toevoegen van argumenten die in Althussers reconstructie van immanente causaliteit ontbreken. Deze maand onderzoekt het seminar hoe Deleuze dit probleem aanpakt door zich te richten op de vraag hoe Spinoza de omkering van het oneindige door het eindige denkt, en welke problemen zich op dit punt in Spinoza’s denken voordoen. De week wordt afgesloten met de conferentie Relocating Subalternity op 6 en 7 april. Meer informatie is te vinden in de agenda.

April Theory Week
April kicks off with another theory week. Scheduled this time are reading groups about Benjamin and Simondon on Tuesday 3 April, and seminars Logic and After 1968 (also on Wednesday), CLiC and Hegel (on Thursday). The After 1968 seminar is entitled “Deleuze’s Spinoza: The underground current of the philosophy of immanence”. The gathering follows up the last seminar, which discussed in how far Machery - with his 1979 book Hegel or Spinoza - supplements Althusser’s reading of Spinoza by adding arguments lacking in Althusser’s reconstruction of immanent causality. This month, the seminar explores how Deleuze tackles these problems by re-examining the question of how Spinoza thinks the transversal of the infinite through the finite, and which difficulties occur right at this point in Spinoza’s thinking. Last thing on the agenda this week is the conference Relocating Subalternity on 6 and 7 April. More info can be found in the agenda.
