The Middle Road

You could be in the same room with my father and not even know he was there. As a young girl I’d often wonder about this phenomenon. In order to contemplate how he could make himself invisible in a room filled with people I had to learn to do the same, in order to spend time watching him in awe. I would spend hours stalking him, waiting for him to come out of the bathroom, walking like a ninja behind his footsteps-where is he going now? What is he doing? I would often ask myself over and over till that alone became a mantra, my reason to be alive even though I didn’t understand why. You could call daddy five times before his eyes would blink away from the source of his absolute absorption, usually whatever was on the tube that night, often a documentary on PBS channel thirteen: nature, nova, wild America, a national geographic presentation; anything that would take him away from the reality of his life at large.

The whole world would fall away and soon he forgot you were even there. Time and again however he would narrate what he was watching. Marty Stouffer would begin about the great black bear of the Appalachian Mountains; daddy would include the size and mass of the creature. How the native American man, revered and cherished the bear, to be a man in certain tribes a rite of passage would include a battle with the beast-no part of the defeated animal would be spared by the people for the victor would become the embodiment of the bear; the spirit of the bear would become the spirit of the man that defeated it. Once he had unloaded this factoid my father would cease to speak, a loaded silence would befall the room I would be drawn into the world of the bear fighter missing another ten minutes of the program. Yet I was wiser, I understood a little more about the American black bear, and I believed any and everything my father said.

I spent the majority of my childhood waiting for a sign that I was special. I endured gratefully hours of lectures for a brief glimmer of recognition of who I was in his eyes. Birthdays and holidays were big in my family; the same people would always show-up: my maternal grandmother, uncle and aunt, cousins and depending on my two sisters and brother- a friend of theirs, would participate in the festivities as well. He would greet them at the door as they came in with “hey how are you? Say what time do you think you’ll be heading out later?” My father did this so often it became common knowledge that to visit us meant you should already know when the visit would end, your exit had to be planned before the shoes, and hat and coat had a chance to be removed. Better he knew this in advance than to be surprised with enduring any extra face time with those people-her (my mother’s) family. It was silent knowledge in our household that special occasions were the only time it was ok for anyone to come over. We rarely had company and God forbid someone show up unannounced, you needed to give him fair warning, otherwise he would manipulate the environment in such a way the tension would literally feel as if it was not only getting thicker but making it hard to breath embarrassing one and all; the poor visitor practically fleeing towards the door.

The lights would go out. Everyone in the apartment holding their breath, especially the birthday girl or boy, the cake my great aunt made from scratch three layered, frosted with homemade chocolate icing would wait glistening in the center of the table. Candles illuminating the faces of my mother and grandmother standing front and center glaring at us kids lest we dare swipe the cake with a finger, but someone was missing... Quickly everyone would look and see who was in attendance, there was always one face missing from the little gathering. “Where is Joe?” my uncle would say. For a second you realized that you hadn’t really seen him all night, which was impossible you would surmise nobody walked out the door….. In a small three bedroom apartment it was near impossible to slip out unnoticed. Yet somehow, daddy wasn’t there. Then someone (usually me, no matter if it were I about to blow out the candles) would break away to find out where he was. And right there! Right behind us in the living room he would be sitting in front of the television, the look of annoyance that was on his face when the festivities had begun and the guests had started to arrive hadn’t left his features; they had in fact marked his face the whole night. He wanted to be left alone, so alone that no one even noticed that he was there. The closer you walked across the peach carpeted living room floor to where he sat on the ancient brown couch, the thicker the air became. It felt like going into a room to be confronted by yet another door, you had to knock to get in, and only if he felt like it would you be allowed admittance. “Daddy we are about to sing happy birthday” tongue in teeth a long loud sucking noise would erupt from his mouth; his head and eyes rolled and lolled around like a bobble headed, googlie eyed, baby doll. Sometimes he would just get up after this brief display of pure irritated histrionics, joints cracking after so long being in repose. At other times a long stream of curse words and accusations, making you feel like a fool for sacrificing your man or womanhood for such as this. He would take his place somewhere in the back outside of the circle, the birthday child (either myself or a sibling) would feel the excitement filling them with importance and joy all of a sudden, for certainly this meant you were special-the big man got up to sing just for you, forget everyone else in attendance-what mattered was the big man standing in the back with the frown and the “hurry the fuck up” look on his face; the dull gleam the candles produced in his eyes. It didn’t even matter that before the lights were flicked he was back in front of the T.V. set.

I wanted always to be near him, I felt consumed with the feeling that I was in the presence of greatness. Every year for two months my father took a vacation from his job. A night job he has worked all of my childhood and adult life. It took almost thirteen years but eventually I learned his career to be a certified nursing assistant at a nursing home in Harlem, NY. The subject of his employment was never a topic for discussion-period, you didn’t ask-it was none of your business, like asking the age of an elder; forbidden. I looked forward to his vacations this meant that we didn’t have to sleep at night without him; it was like the whole apartment was wrapped in this blanket of protection. The vacations were always around summer recess, sometimes spring break but always when we would be able to have him to ourselves. When we were really young my father would wake us up very early in the morning, before the sky turned blue telling us to get dressed. We would rub the sleep from our eyes and dutifully dress. I being the eldest dressed the fastest and made sure that my sisters and brother were ready before he began to walk out of the door. More often than not however we would find ourselves running out of the building trying to catch up with his retreating forms.

After the stop at the fruit stand for assorted melons, peaches, apples oranges and other fruit, he would stuff them in his backpack; I would stretch up to my tip-toes to zip the backpack, then grab my sisters and brother and commence the mad dash of keeping up with his long strides and quick steps. Our destination was always the same: to The Bronx Park; a 718-acre site that was last owned by the Lorillard’s, a family of tobacco manufacturers and their historic Snuff Mill still stands in the park. The western part of the park was devoted to the New York Botanical Garden in 1891, and then the Bronx Zoo opened in 1899. The area that remains parkland today features one of the last surviving red maple-hardwood forests in the city and the many pathways running through it are popular with joggers. The Bronx River (the only freshwater river in the city) also winds through the park for two miles and small populations of heron, muskrat, beaver and turtles live on its banks. In the eastern section of the site, known as Starlight Park, are baseball, football, soccer and bocce fields. Fishermen congregate at the Soundview lagoon, located in the southeast. For kids, there are seven playgrounds scattered throughout, and a playground associate supervises.

It was during our treks through this forestry jungle that we learned of medicinal plants, various types of vegetation, of how a man could live off of the bounty in a forest if he would only stop to look. Of mint and how it grows what it looks like, poison ivy a prelude to a miserable itchy rash. Once after a rainstorm that happened the night before; we were walking through the forest; suddenly my father spun around and told me- for I was always right behind him- to tell the “other ones” to follow his footsteps exactly, because of the thick mud and giant puddles swarming with mosquitoes it was imperative that we follow close behind our guide. By and by we stopped in the deepest part of the woods- that is he stopped and all four of us stumbled into each other after he halted abruptly. Standing still we were instructed by him to close our eyes and listen. Suddenly Bronx Park woke up, the sounds of birds singing talking and fluttering in and out of trees began to fill our senses. The warmth and brightness of the rising sun as it made it’s decent from over the clouds in the east made the temperature in our faces rise. I could smell the scent of the earth; she emitted a pungent odor of green things and flowers. He then passed me a fruit, of which I passed to my sister who passed it to my brother and we watched with hungry anticipation as my youngest sister began to munch and gobble her breakfast. “Pay attention” my father said just then, snapping us all out of our muse. “You see over there?” He pointed one long thick leathery finger to a spot in front of us; completely covered by trees, brush and bushes, through the densest part you could see a hole big enough to see the darkness on the other side. “Yes” we replied in unison, though now the sounds of the forest had much less of a utopian ring to it. “There in the middle of the forest is a lab.” “A lab?” we say together, “yes, a mad scientist was long ago banished to live forever out there, for his work was too evil, even for the evil society we live in. This was his ultimate creation; a man that could naturally camouflage himself with his surroundings.” “Is he a robot?” I asked swallowing my mounting fear. “No I just told you he is a man, and…he is probably watching us now” At this my sisters and brother and I were ready to leave, my father got a big laugh from the whole episode, but every snap of a twig, buzzing of a bug, or light feathery touch of grass on our legs had us held tight in the cold grip of fear. This did not stop him, he continued to talk of this “man” of how he had super human strength and perfect tracking skills, we would never be safe unless we found our way out of the forest; the latter of which daddy achieved with ease. He always made us feel safe; even as the mad scientist’s creation tracked us through the forest.

Museums were a very special treat, it served as visual affirmation of all the lectures we were made to sit through. It was at the Metropolitan Museum of art that I first bore witness to the Mentu Neta, the Egyptian book of the dead. The long scroll of papyrus encased in its glass display, red hieroglyphs that highlighted spells; it was read from right to left-I could barely look at the text for fear of the curses it had inscribed within. As he explained the meaning of the scroll and hieroglyphs running his fingers over the glass I wondered again, who could he possibly be. Who was this man? Mounting fear of that finger on the glass and the growing annoyance on the face of the security officer only deepened my intrigue. He had absolutely no regard for the guards, keeping people away from the precious artifacts. He would run his whole hand silently over the faces of Osiris, Anubis or Bas. When viewing the temple of Dendur, the imported Egyptian house of worship, my father would instruct us first to say a prayer to the statue of the Gods: bas, Anubis….then we would turn around to the water surrounding the temple and throw in “wishes” either quarters, nickels, pennies or dimes. Our eyes would close and our wishes thrown into the still waters the temple of Dendur lay nestled in. To believe in something so constantly and so great rendered my father invisible to me. Devoid of fault, excused of injustices and mistakes. To see him is to witness the voice and not the man.

In order to understand myself better I first needed to understand this powerful force in my life. I have come to realize, that he is a source of challenge within myself. I wanted to be better brighter and less consumed with my thoughts. “There are two things that can happen to a man of knowledge”; my father said to me once “either all the knowledge he has accumulated will achieve him enlightenment or make him crazy”. For many years I wrestled with this, what was meant by “make him crazy”? I watched as over the years he dissolved into his bottle. As the anger at his life worsened his temper would flair out of control over the slightest issue. He and I talked less, the relationship between my siblings and he began to unravel. When he looked and really focused on you it felt similar to the brief flashes of warmth on a winter afternoon, the sun suddenly glowing bright and sunny filling the observer with a false comfort from the cold. Love was not something you were a part of; in love you played your part. Giving one person unyielding power over the starved emotions of the recipient; I would beg the question often growing up- did he really love me?

My father’s room was to me a vault of mystery. There in his closet was stacked every which way, his books. Books that were separate from the family reading materials, they did not reside out in the open never ever to be thumbed through and read by anyone, family or friend. I would come up with crafty ways to get him to relinquish one of his secrete treasures to me. Often in conversations he would quote from a text albeit Carlos Castaneda in “The lessons of Don Juan” or his most prized “Conversations with Ogotemmeli: An Introduction to Dogon Religious Ideas by Marcel Griaule” the quest for the privilege to read these works became a struggle I waged with him for decades, before finally giving up; I read “The lessons of Don Juan” myself, I was able to find a copy in my college library. It took all those years before I discovered that what was in the books would become a foundation of mythic and superstitious proportion as I based my life around them, knowing and believing in the words before I even had a chance to look at and read the pages. I just took his word for it.
Like him I had my world of reality, and the world the way it would be if I would release the brain cloud and make my dreams real. I was often told: “there is a difference between fantasy and reality” no one ever deciphered for me what that difference was. If I’d known that the difference was simply the essence of my own spirit and power to make what was not yet “real” my reality-things would have been different. I’ve also never seen it accomplished. What you are then left with is a deep soul crushing disappointment in yourself; disappointed in your own ability to create; which breeds a deep resentment and loathe towards anyone that has the power to make their dreams real. You are left with a deep sense of inadequacy, shooting blanks within the womb of the soul body connection failing to bear fruit; life. I watched as everyday he sunk further and further down the hole.
Within ourselves is a point we reach when all things become immaterial, it is never advised to visit this place often for some of us do not know our way back. We retreat so far into the core, searching for answers begging for the power and strength to withstand yet another failure, forgetting that falling most often repeatedly is the only way to walk. We forget that our lives are only ours to create. We become a part of the caste, hand that was dealt. Without even realizing that it’s only the innate comfort of fitting into a role that keeps us stagnate sometimes forever. Come on stupid! You yell inside the four walls of your cranium, hoping that it would knock around and ultimately seep into the mushy brain matter, igniting a spark fit to be the saving grace of a lifetime of stuck misery. He walked to the crossroads and had a choice to make, yet instead of making a choice to choose a solid path to follow, he decided to continue down the middle road in hopes of coming up with the answer for the correct path in which to walk. Almost thirty years later, he is still trying to decide, yet because he is beginning to grasp the false concept of time, it is speeding up racing to beat him to the finish line, beating him to the punch at every turn-it waits for no man, this “time” and all the while he realizes his “time” is almost up. People around him will begin to succumb to “time” his mother, his best friend (only real friend at all) and icons: musical, comical, and in sports. Like a turtle my father is seeing reality, he has spent to much “time” on the middle road. Fleeting it is, one day you are twenty, the next fifty without even declaring a life for yourself that would allow you to take back your “time” to manipulate as one so chooses. I’ve watched my father try to slow down his time by not thinking about it, drinking swallowing bottles of the fiery liquid, all the while trying to numb his urgent thoughts. As he watches out bleary eyed and oblivious to all thoughts and feelings, hearing and seeing life as a whisper, only he the endured must bear. Of course what he does is make “time” run, he knows this but is now addicted to the rush between himself and his mental mortality, irrationality created by the idea of himself he could not figure out. The catalyst will be his death he fears, and yet all the while he yells at his children, he turns cold towards his wife, leaving her and them to find love and support elsewhere as he sits somewhere in the house with them. He knows-“how dare he” “how dare I” repeated over and over in his brain, while he adds a joint to the sweet escape of the liquor. These little bastards!! What the fuck are they LOOKING at: he thinks this when he looks at their little needy hopeful faces. But he knows….my father knows what life is. He knows what’s in the history books. He graduated high school with a perfect 4.0, but did not fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor.

When he approached the middle road for the first time; he chose to hold off the decision making. What are his children left with, this dichotomy of light and dark; brilliant yet not bright enough to achieve the ultimate power, the power to own his own time. We are left with a broken dream and a shattered promise, we are left to fend for ourselves, we are left with the soul crushing fear that we will become him…we are left with his sadness and hopes, we are his dreams as well as all the nightmares of a carefree childhood. What are we left with? What am I left with, what will I do? When you look up so high into a face that cannot sufficiently show you the sun, because of sleepiness and work, when you become old enough to realize something is terribly wrong here; when you are I who could understand so young that he was a failure-to himself. My father my bright dream my ascending star, my knight, my mentor, who is he? Sometimes I feel if he could pull himself out of his thoughts, his drowning unfulfilling thoughts, I could follow suit-alas! I will have to stop walking the path behind my father like a ninja, silently walking in his footsteps, placing my feet in his shoes; and walk a different path from his. Somehow I know in my soul that my freedom will become his. The spell will be broken it will free us all. Like a Louisiana funeral march we have all silently walked down the middle road with daddy, he never turned around for to long to see who was behind him; but when he did it was always with anger and sadness, the blues personified, trapped in the same ole melody, never interpreting the rhythm to improvise his own tune. When I stop, it will be short, my sisters my brother, my mother with run up into my back, for I walk up front, with him, so when I stop they will slam into me and they will stop as well. I intend to turn around facing them and walk down my road. They will all follow suit.

But will my father? I will call him: “Daddy?” I will try to call him to me, beseech him to stop! I will yell! But the big man will smile at me from afar take out his cigar, tell me like he always does, “you do it girl, go for it” and he will turn his back on me and keep walking.

What I do when I am blue...

My mother says, "whenever your feeling your worst is when you should look your best."

When things aren't going my way and I find myself feeling low, the last thing I want to do is - anything. Literally i'd rather pick up the remote find a groove in the couch sit there and veg out. When I am unhappy its very hard to get motivated, especially on weekends when its not necessarily a requirement to get up and go.

During these moments I employ my mothers techniques and for me its grooming that I love. I take out my box filled with nail supplies, I give myself a manicure and pedicure. I soak my fingers and toes, remove cuticles, file and paint them as well. If i'm feeling especially introspective I dig into the creative vault tucked within myself and come up with cool nail art and designs.

As I am working, concentrating on staying within the nail beds and getting rid of any polish that has stubbornly gone outside of the lines I am thinking about things. I am making decisions, I am planning and beginning to feel a lot better. When I am done, I sit back proud of my work, the attention that I have just given myself has made me feel better and more refreshed.

Some women may go to the gym or cook, some may shop, yet still other women may get a haircut or try a new hairstyle or dress impeccably during their period of the "blues".

When my mother told me to look my best when I feel my worst she was telling me to work on my internal issues and keep them from creeping out onto the surface.

How to Lose - Falling With Style

Pick up any magazine, walk down any business or self-help aisle to see scores of titles concerning winning. How to win, how to succeed, stories about success, articles about how you can succeed too.

Well i'm sick of it. I think that largely we are all rushing to the outcome and forgetting about the journey. There is real reward in the journey. The journey makes you strong and resilient, it teaches you all you'll ever need to know about yourself and your personal power. A journey can introduce you to yourself and give you purpose.

So what does the journey have to do with losing? There is a line in Toy Story 1 when Andy receive's Buzz lightyear for a birthday present. He is everything that Woody isn't, Woody is a vintage cowboy doll and up to that moment, Andy's most prized toy. There is a little competition between Buzz and Woody, the other toys looking on describing all of Buzz's attributes one of which are the wings on his space suit. Believing he can fly Buzz jumps off the bed and in a serious of near misses floats around the room, getting caught and hooked on various objects in the room unbeknownst to him, he is still under the impression that he is flying. When finally he lands gracefully back on the bed, Woody says to him "thats not flying, thats falling with style".

Belief is powerful when aligned with desire and goal attainment. Yet in the moment when we are stumbling along, getting caught on things, snagged, held and trapped even - we haven't lost sight of the goal. The fun is in the journey, the falling with style, the finesse of failing and redirecting, picking up the pieces and moving on, succeeding against all odds.

Be honest with yourself, seek inspiration from those who have made it, take in all words of wisdom and golden advice, but never forget the journey, there will always be a point that goes from A - B. Enjoy the ride, experience the journey - there would be no story without recounting the journey.

Magic - Random thoughts and philosophical meanderings

I felt compelled to write this, as I began to think thoughts that were geared towards how magic is traditionally defined, and how we are all magicians in real life. I'll start by defining the term, the dictionary defines magic as -"an extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source".

Think about that for a second - "extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source", dissecting this sentence, i'll take it apart like this: what is more extraordinary than the fact that we are here? You are reading this and I have written it. You will think about it and it will manifest in some way....will it start a conversation? Will you decide that what you've read is garbage and link off to another page on the internet somewhere? Whatever the cause the effect was what you read, that I thought up.

We think, we manifest, we create, its no secret that the greatest extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source is our very existence. I am going to stop there before this conversation gets too deep and controversal - my point is this.

I am beginning to realize that what we think if turned into a strong enough belief, will manifest itself as ability, that ability will compel us to move in a certain direction - directed towards that belief, we will work hard, we will be focused, we will recognize opportunity and that thing that started off as a thought and idea will manifest itself in reality, in the reality of the thinker.

Here's a little exercise: think of something you want (a new job, a promotion, to start your own business) then begin to utilize your abilities, your time and patience to get it and do not be swayed....work at it, become it, I'm pretty sure that what started off as an idea and thought, will come true.

Does that make you a magician? No, not in the traditional sense, but did you use your extraordinary power or influence (your mind and ability) to pull from a supernatural force (the universe) to manifest that idea into your reality?

If the answer to that question is yes, then I believe you have performed a form of magic.

I LOVE Ella! I also felt compelled to post some interesting information I saw on Wikipedia, no matter the adversity you can overcome! Trust yourself, trust your abilities and then just do it.

In 1932, her mother died from a heart attack.^[3] Following this trauma, Fitzgerald's grades dropped dramatically and she frequently skipped school. Abused by her stepfather, she was first taken in by an aunt ^[5] and at one point worked as a lookout at a bordello and also with a Mafia-affiliated numbers runner.^[6] When the authorities caught up with her, she was first placed in the Colored Orphan Asylum in Riverdale, the Bronx.^[7] However, when the orphanage proved too crowded she was moved to the New York Training School for Girls in Hudson, New York, a state reformatory. Eventually she escaped and for a time was homeless.^[5]

She made her singing debut at 17 on November 21, 1934 at the Apollo Theater. in Harlem, New York. She pulled in a weekly audience at the Apollo and won the opportunity to compete in one of the earliest of its famous "Amateur Nights". She had originally intended to go on stage and dance but, intimidated by the Edwards Sisters, a local dance duo, she opted to sing instead in the style of Connee Boswell. She sang Boswell's "Judy" and "The Object of My Affection," a song recorded by the Boswell Sisters, and won the first prize of US$25.00.^[8]

Justin Turk - Bringing Beatles Inspired Rock Back to the 21st Century

Interview with Justin Turk getting to know his "Beatles" side

Cigarettes, stale beer smells out of cups stained with old froth. Tight jeans faded vintage tee-shirts, long hair, short or greasy, old boots with heels and leather jackets encompass my thoughts when I dream up a rock bands jam session.

I hear the ghost sounds of guitars playing in the background, "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" keeps coming to mind as I begin transcribing my conversation with Justin Turk. Justin is a gifted artist with a sound heavily influenced by the Beatles. His voice is clear and very melodic, its the kind of sound that makes people stop in their tracks to listen - I have witnessed this myself.

During a photshoot (which took place at the Newport Waterfront) for the Hearing out Loud campaign, Justin with his guitar asked a gentleman if he could board his Yacht to play something. I could see them from where I sat in front of a Starbucks across the water. Once Justin received the okay, I watched as he and Nicole (a hearing impaired performer) hopped on board and while Nicole signed his words, Justin played and Justin sang. I could hear him clearly all the way across the water, so could everyone around me, people walking the pier and everyone nearest the yacht eating lunch at the cafe. It was as if someone had switched on a radio.

I decided that I needed to sit down with Justin to discuss what makes his musical mind tick, and to get the word out about this guy who had won myself and so many others over with a song.

JWritesiT: Thank you Justin for sitting down with me JWritesiT, I'm going to ask you a couple of questions, your a musician so lets get some information about you and about what makes you tick as a musician

JWritesiT: So Justin what type of music do you perform?

Justin: Mainly rock n roll, I have a large range of styles I used to sing in a metal band, I can do all the "dirty" vocals all that stuff..and I have a really good ballad side to me as well, soft rock n roll.

JWritesiT: Awesome, Do you play any instruments?

Justin: I play mainly guitar and piano, but my main thing is really singing - main instrument to play (smiling)

JWritesiT: Ok, and what kind of guitar to you play? Bass, acoustic?

Justin: I play both acoustic and electric guitar I also play electric piano but preferably grand

JWritesiT: Why did you become a musician?

Justin: Well its something I always liked to do. I always liked music as a little kid, I've been singing since I was able to walk (smiling) basically. My mom used to sing alot to whatever she was listening to, so I guess I kind of picked it up from her. I started performing when I was 9 years old and basically cause my father influenced me to get up and perform in front of large crowds.

I remember the first time i ever sang in front of a large group of people, I went out to eat with them and there were people doing karaoke and my dad said "hey go up and sing karaoke" we were at a restaurant so I got up (chuckling) but they didn't have the song that I wanted to do. So I sang acapella without the music and they actually let me do it...surprisingly.

JWritesiT: What song was that?

Justin: That was ugh....I cant remember what song it was (smiling) it was by the Backstreet Boys (chuckling) and then at age 12 I picked up the guitar, that's basically were it all started from then..

JWritesiT: That's great thank you! Who are your influences Justin?

Justin: My biggest influence is the Beatles. I have alot of other different influences depending on the genre of music - listen to everything (smiling) But I would say my biggest influence is the Beatles.

JWritesiT: And whats your favorite Beatles song?

Justin: Ahhh i don't even know where to choose there are so many of them

JWritesiT: Ok, what do you like the most about performing?

Justin: I guess, the ability to share my music with other people, first hand, especially when you get to see people sing along with your music and have a good time to what you are performing. I put my heart and soul out on that stage. Its so good to see people respond to it.

JWritesiT: What do you like least? Are there any drawbacks to being a performer?

Justin: Well if you have to load and unload your own equipment then I would say that would be one of the worst aspects (chuckling) but other than that I don't really see any downfall.

JWritesiT: What about original music? How often to you perform your own music vs. cover songs or do you think that as a performer its easier to perform cover songs than original music?

Justin: I Love doing cover songs because its what influences you (as a person) really, your music influences all other peoples music and the one thing about cover songs is its always good to get the people who aren't familiar with your music - when your performing live to enjoy themselves. Then they get into your original stuff.

JWritesiT: And then you begin to gain a following...

JWritesiT: When did you know you wanted to be a performer full time assuming that you are a performer full time.

Justin: Well I do have a regular day job, I work as a carpenter, but I would love to do it full time....I wish I could do it full time. Not quite at that level yet, but hopefully soon.

JWritesiT: And how old are you Justin?

Justin: 21

JWritesiT: If you couldn't perform what would you do?

Justin: I don't know....I don't know what else I would do...I'd probably still find a way to do it (chuckling)

JWritesiT: Good answer! What is next on the horizon for you Justin? What are you working on, what can we expect to see from you? Where do you normally perform?

Justin: Recently my metal band broke up after 5 years being together, but it was kind of for the betterment of everyone in the band our styles and tastes changed...we kind of just went our separate ways to do what we really want and truly want.

Right now I'm in this process of producing my first solo record, there will be 8 tracks on it. Its soft rock, bringing back that old time rock n roll, that's my music mission - to bring back that old time rock n roll. It still has a nice modern touch to it though.

JWritesiT: I can't wait to get a copy of the CD! And what can you say to other musicians that are out there with a day job and a dream of becoming a performer? What do you tell them how do you keep yourself going?

Justin: Just have confidence if you really truly love to do it and you have the ambition to do it keep trying- anything can happen. If its truly what you want to do it will happen. If you feel in your heart that this is truly meant to be then it will happen. You just have to work hard at it. You can't just give up you can't let yourself down, keep progressing.

Who were you when you were a little girl or boy? Who did you want to become? What did your heart tell you? What made it pump blood resolutely? When life happens we sometimes forget about the early years, and end up pushing that which we desire aside...sometimes until later, sometimes for years.

It takes a kind of righteous bravery to hold on to your dreams dusting them off for a time that works for you - now. The following is Jeanray Barbers story, the story of a woman who waited 25 years to try again. Listen to what made her leave a great corporate job to follow her dreams, and how you can to.

I'm sitting here with Jeanray Barber, thank you very much for agreeing to an interview with JWritesiT.

Jeanray: Well thank you very much for allowing me to have an interview, I really appreciate it.

JWriteiT: Awesome, awesome, so tell us a little about yourself.

Jeanray: As a child I made and cut out patterns from newspapers, created original designs for my sister and I to wear to school. I also created crocheted vests, hats, and (hot pants) to wear and for sale.

Now I am coming out of Corporate America and I am moving into what I call - my calling. However, for 25 years I pushed creativity aside and moved into a very structured type job environment. Now I am moving into the more creative part of the gift that God has given me. So I am now actually able to do the sketching and the sewing, the knitting, textures and collages - all of that. For everything from a creative perspective that I have, that I never got to use for 25 years, I now have an opportunity to do it, and so it's a different place to be in. It's exciting, but scary at the same time, so it's like everyday is an adventure, I'm learning, I have different opportunities, I get to try it out. That's kind of what I want to say, I think that a lot of times people coming out of Corporate America tend to think if you don't have a "job title" that your career or your work life is basically over.

Money is different, obviously but its not the end all. You get paid...but its different. You have to budget differently and spend money differently, your whole way of operating changes. So I guess basically that is what I would want to say and so I am really going back to things that I am used to. Like I used to make wedding gowns - first of all I am a fashion designer, my degree is in fashion design.

JWritesiT: Where did you get your degree?

Jeanray: Hampton University.

JWrtitesiT: Ok

Jeanray: I graduated and almost immediately I started a career at AT&T.... I guess that was '83 until 2009. While there, I received my Masters degree in Human Resource Management and a certification in Global Management and Leadership. I try to bring all of that into what I am doing. From the human resources perspective I observe people's behavior, style and mannerisms, so when I enhance a design such as what I created for the artist Joy Beth, I considered Joy's personality, and I thought about what is it that could contribute, that would make her feel very confident when onstage. Similarly when it was Ahndraea's birthday, I thought of what design would make her feel beautiful and special. Whenever I am creating something....I try to use everything.

JWritesiT: Ok, and what would you say is your signature style? If you could think of your perfect client, who would that person be, what direction do you want your fashion to go in?

Jeanray: Hmmm...My style is very simplistic. So when style is simplistic it means you can add to it. Generally I will start with just a picture. A person comes to me and says they want something made, I then draw their body. That's what I do...I start with the body, I look at the body type and I think about what can I add to this, because to me...this is where all of my previous training comes in, ideas I have garnered from a human and global stand point. When you're thinking about diversity; diversity means that you're starting off with a blank sheet and you're letting that person be whoever they are. When they are giving me information about what they want I'm very open to what it is that makes this person who they are. The signature then is "Made 4 U". The person is who you should see when I create something for someone. You should NOT see me, you should SEE whoever that person is.

So I'm looking for people who have a good idea of who they are. If you don't know who you are that's when the Human Resource's training kicks in, and I have to coach the person into identifying their unique preferences.

JWritesit: Ok, So the name of your company is: "Made 4 U"?

Jeanray: Yes it is. When I am knitting it is "The Paired Connexion". When I am repairing it's "4 Minor Alterations" and when I am designing it is "Made 4 U". I have so many different aspects, I have a name for each little component, so depending on the customers needs; will determine which component is used.

JWritesiT: You knit, you sew, and you create custom made designs for clientele....

Jeanray: Yes I do. I also enhance garments, so lets say for instance you have something old

JWritesiT: Ok

Jeanray: (cont'd) And you still want to wear it, but you don't like the way it looks now. Again you have to know who you are. When you talk to me about who you are, then I can change that for you. It would look totally different, it would never look the way it did initially.

JWritesit: Excellent! Well I recently conducted an interview with photographer Cali | York, one of the questions that I asked her because like you she has also recently left Corporate America, I asked her "what is your timeline" Do you have a timeline, if your company does not perform the way you want it to, is there a chance that you will re-enter Corporate America if so why, if not why not?

Jeanray: As far as a "timeline" hmm one of the things that I have learned is that whenever you are going into something new you're are on a learning curve. A learning curve for me is 6 months. Now to establish yourself as an Entrepreneur and build your clientele; I'd estimate a timeline of a year to a year and a half. So I'm in 2011 now, I'd say probably the end of 2012. I would want to look back and ask myself, whether I have accomplished all that I set out to accomplish. Am I moving in the direction I am supposed to be moving in? If not what should I be doing now? When I first started this endeavor, one of the things that I did was I pray about what it was that the Lord wanted me to do. Because for 25 years it was very clear cut - go to AT&T and work. (Laughing) And get your promotions and move up....all of that.

Now, I am employed by Him (The Lord), and I go to Him and I ask Him what it is that I am supposed to do. So I really feel like I am on the path that I am supposed to be on. What I have to make sure that I am NOT doing, is living like I am still in Corporate America. That means spending as if you have a paycheck coming every 2 weeks. When you are working for yourself the pay is different. When I find myself with financial issues I stop myself and first I ask for forgiveness because apparently I have forgotten where I am, (Laughing) and then I ask Him to help me get back on track....its a learning curve. The 6 months is learning how to be an Entrepreneur, coming out of Corporate America and learning how to live within the means and guidelines. He has set up for me. Which is why everyday is a new opportunity for me. Every morning I start over again. He will bless your effort and He will actually tell you, what you're supposed to do with your hands for example. I find all the scriptures that talk about working with your hands, because that's what I am doing at this point. These are the things I remind myself of everyday. Then I ask Him to direct me to who my customers are. Some clients are for the purpose of getting your name out there, and some customers are supposed to be pouring into what you are doing financially. Everybody is not the same. I should be clear about who is who. Therefore, I cannot do this without Him.

I expect to be successful, I do not expect to go back to Corporate America - EVER, I think 25 years was long enough (Laughing)

JWritesiT: You are giving everyone reading this priceless information, thank you! Where do you see your company 5 years from now, where would you like to be?

Jeanray: Actually I like the flexibility of travel. I love traveling. I want to be in a place where I am commissioned. I like the thought of being commissioned. I like the thought of a person calling me and saying "can you come here?" the client spending a day or two with me just to see who I am and then creating that unique item for that particular client. I see myself moving around. I see myself being able to share this gift that God has given me with people all over, and not just here in America; but Globally. I had to get that Global certification for a reason. Everything that He has given me I am using. I see a name that people will know within the industry, when something uniquely made is needed

JWritesiT: What is the turn around time for your work?

Jeanray: I would have to say the maximum, starting from scratch is going to be 2-3 weeks. You have to include fitting and sketching so 2 - 3 weeks. The artist Joy Beth had a situation where it was a dress she had and she wanted it to be enhanced. In that case it can be done in 2 days...it depends on what the person is asking for. Minimum 2 days the Max 2-3 weeks.

JWritesiT: For the person who is today sitting in a cubicle daydreaming about a career in fashion and truly wants to make the leap, what would you say are some of the key things he or she would need to know before they leap?

Jeanray: Today you are not limited, there are no limits to it so if you do not put yourself in a box you can really do whatever. Get a feel for what it is you want to do....fashionably speaking. Next, wear your stuff and if you don't wear it, get a model that will. When I think about Joy Beth and

other people I have designed for.....These are my models. I may not be able to wear some of the outfits, that I've created, but they can and then look hot! (Laughing) They are representing me.

One of the things I would say is, fashion as its been depicted today is different from when I graduated from college first of all. When I graduated you sort of had to get with a couture house, or find someone to take you under their wing, you had to work for that designer for years and at some point establish yourself and gain a reputation, then you got a chance to hopefully open up your own boutique.

JWritesiT: Do you have anything upcoming? Anything you are working on right now?

Jeanray: Actually a lot of knitting because the L.I.W.I. W.I.V.E.S. Hooked up on Knit Together in Love Project kicks off in July. I also have commissioned projects for July-Sept for various performing artists and so I have about 4 or 5 different things that I am working on at one time.

JWritesiT: I have to ask you one more question, how does God figure into your work?

Jeanray: I am so glad you asked that because stepping out of the corporate world into an entrepreneurial venture, means that you are literally operating in faith. If you do not believe in God and you do not believe in yourself and your abilities you cannot have any confidence in what you are about to do. You will not succeed because basically whatever you think....is exactly what happens. My faith plays a major part in my endeavor, because when I reached my 25th year with AT&T I said, Lord I thank you for these years. I basically started AT&T, had my daughter Adriene worked there through that entire period. She went through high school and graduated from college. Now she is on her own and that piece of my life is complete.

I thanked Him for the 25 years and asked Him...Lord what do you want me to do? Part of it is learning how to walk with Him. We say we have faith, we say we believe God, and we say that we trust Him, but you really don't until you have to. I start out with Him everyday, I invite the holy spirit in, because all power comes from Him, the anointing comes from Him. When I knit I ask, what do you see this yarn being and then I start knitting.

Cali | York - Pixel Princess

The Oprah Winfrey Show was famous for many elements. One of my favorites was the "Aha moment". The "Aha Moment is that light bulb that goes off - you know the one some of us are still waiting to switch on. The one that answers all of our questions, that provides the sharpened edge in the face of all our inner struggle and adversity. When suddenly in some cases after what seems a life time - all is understood, a path becomes clear and you're now able to walk in a defined and confident direction.

Cali | York has found her passion. Her "Aha Moment" has propelled her to pursue her love of photography full time. She is a woman who understands completely what she must do. When experiencing her photographs one cannot help but feel the grit, passion and emotion of her subjects. She manipulates light and angles almost as if she herself is somewhere part of the landscape. Watching and capturing part of a scene the trained eye cannot see - its depth - its magic; its her talent and gift.

I had the pleasure of speaking with the artist that is Cali | York......

JWritesiT: Thank you for talking with me today!

Cali | York: No problem, this is exciting!

JWritesiT: Lets start with the name: Cali | York, who is she?

Cali | York: California is where I was born, New York is where I was raised. I've been trying to find a Cali | York feel for many years. I am a Gemini which is the symbol of duality and the twins. I have two sides: the "Cali" side - bright sunny; "York": Gritty, tough and hardworking. People really seem to like the name and are really receptive to it. It's who I am.

JWritesiT: You've recently made the transition from a corporate career to photography full-time. I commend you for this - congratulations! How does it feel?

Cali | York: It's Lovely! I feel empowered, I can say yes to a project, I can say no. I am completely responsible for the decisions I make and don't have to wait for "approvals" before doing anything.

JWritesiT: Do you have a timeline? If your business does not reach the level you hope it to - will you re-enter corporate america?

Cali | York: No timelines. I learned that about myself. I'm a better person not limiting my development. I haven't found something to believe in more than myself....to say I can devote all my time to this. I have an insane goal that I keep saying to myself is going to happen. I'm NOT going to stop. I have started a lot of things that I haven't finished in the past. But not anymore. At the end of the day there are people who want to see you succeed, so you have to win and let the haters fall on their face. I'm not going back [to corporate america] I will make this work.

JWritesiT: How has Cali | York photography evolved? What do you look for in a client?

Cali | York: I began my affair with photography admiring my father. He would always have his camera and come home to develop the prints. Seeing those images inspired me to want to create photographs. After getting to the advanced enthusiasts stage I began by doing individual retail photography. I really want to move away from that now. I'm looking for clients who have some creative insight, and work on grander projects for example; I'd love to photograph more editorial pieces like a journalistic fashion story or revisit fables with the cast of new movies . I love to work with people. It helps that whomever I work with understand that I respect my business, and respects my craft. The client would have too as well.

Cali | York is the right choice for businesses small and large, large activities, churches, family portraits, creative people who need photographers. I've worked very hard learning everything I can about what it means to be a photographer. Working with me is always about you (the client) and never about anything else.

JWritesiT: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Cali | York: Well if the world is still around in 5 years I see myself "established". What I mean by that is highly sought after, with a quickly recognizable signature style. Brick and mortar studio's on both coasts, regular national and international travel for shoots and education (both to learn and teach). My husband a partner in my business, my kids enjoying the fruits of our labor; attending flexible study programs in various places here and abroad and traveling with me. Damn that sounds fantastic, (chuckling).

JWritesiT: What would be your ideal shoot? Where would it be?

Cali | York: My ideal shoot is only one where I have pre conceptualized my idea and had it be successfully executed. That can be anywhere in the world I imagine.

JWritesiT: Have you had any interesting feedback?

Cali | York: I have fans in India - they are the most expressive. They give me a different perspective of myself. Its truly humbling. No ever tells me to change anything about my work. No constructive or destructive criticism. The most memorable feedback on my work came from Frantz Fils (not from india); he narrated damn near a movie from one image. Took up 3 Facebook comment boxes but it was incredible!

JWritesiT: What keeps you grounded?

Cali | York: Grounded? Am I grounded? I'm not even sure. I live with a sense of entitlement and feel that I deserve the best and what I have is the best. Sure it might not be YOUR best, or THEIR best, but its my best. I live with a sense of celebrity too. Like, "I'm already famous, its not my fault you don't know who I am", (laughing). If you mean what keeps me focused on humility and being a person of integrity?; I'd have to say my past. I've seen a lot and experienced a lot and learned that you create your own life. Just knowing that I have the power to create a life that's fulfilled by the purpose of creating a life I FEEL is fulfilling is a power like no other (laughing) amazing!! Having that power is what reminds me I have a responsibility to myself not to abuse it. Mistreating people, feelings, transactions etc in the long run hurts only you..

JWritesiT: What is your mantra? What defines you?

Cali | York: Life is what you make it so make it good. Being "free-spirited" (chuckling)

Alexander "TheGriot" Brown: Poet & Host

Its the last Saturday of the month, my girls and I sit in our favorite spot, we are preparing for The Soul Of The City Concert Series at Ashford and Simpson Sugar Bar.

White Zinfandel's and Pinot Noir wait as if in anticipation of a kiss on its glass.

Our Host is all smiles, greeting the guests as they begin to pour in and take their seats, he's making sure that all the artists and house needs are being met. When the house lights dim signalling that the show is about to begin, there is a hush in anticipation of our host, smoothing down his tie as he makes his way on the stage he says: "God Is Good!"...."All the time!" says the crowd.

I sat down with Alexander "TheGriot" Brown just before one of his shows to learn what makes a great Host, and to learn more about his other side - Dr. Poet.

JWritesiT: Thank you for agreeing to this interview!

Alexander: Hey no problem! (smiling)

JWritesiT: How often do you write poetry?

Alexander: Hmmm I play with concepts in my head, then end up writing down those concepts......a drink in one hand and pen in the other and it kinda works out.

JWritesiT: What genre would you say is your poetry?

Alexander: That's the thing, I don't think there is one...it could be erotic, political, whatever my feelings are at that time. I guess if there was a genre it would be: Urban Love Asshole. How you like that? (laughing)

JWritesiT: Can you provide the readers with a short poem?

Alexander: Because of my trials & tribulations, the young sometimes say I’m ahead of my time

The old sometimes call me an old soul

Because I speak with the wisdom of a thrice widowed man who is about 99 years old

         Who has loved and lost but is not eager to love again
         But on nights like this, feelings of nostalgia Make me remember then
        When I could love like I never loved before And dance like nobody was watching
       But now I care with a guarded heart and look over my shoulder wondering whose scheming and plotting

JWritesiT: What inspired you to be a host?

Alexander: Well, I was doing poetry at Justins and a promoter made me sell tickets to perform. After the show he asked me if I could stick around...I said yea and ended up learning a lot about promoting/hosting. I loved it and never thought I would ever be doing the same thing. Now that I am, I truly respect it for what it is.

JWritesiT: What does it take to be a successful Host?

Alexander: Umm....a lot of humility, especially when you are an artist hosting, you have to remember it's not about you. You have to understand the moment for what it is.....it's not YOUR moment. You also have to command respect. I've been told my voice doesn't hurt....(laughing) Dealing with the house, DJ, Artist, waiters and waitresses...trying to get it all out without losing peoples attention.

JWritesiT: Do you get compensated?

Alexander: Yea...Don't work for free. No Host stands without finance...no working for free..

JWritesiT: One average what can a host earn?

Alexander: On average for a smaller venue, $200, for a tour or bigger venue like BBQ's like $1,500-$2,000 the key to remember is just because you got that big venue doesn't mean you'll get called again...sometimes it can take up to 6 months, so you have to keep yourself out there and take those $200 gigs. Keep in mind that the competition will work for free.

JWritesiT: I've been to several of your shows and it seems intense - from a behind the scenes standpoint - what are some of the drawbacks and positives of the job?

Alexander: The drawbacks can be dealing with different artists, managers, etc. people who don't understand teamwork. We had an unsigned artist traveling with security, you couldn't ask her anything directly....it was funny cause she wasn't even cute. (laughing)

The positives are that for one its great working with artists that understand the struggle, doing it because you love it. Everyone exchanging ideas, people who love working together, coercing together. When the next day you get Twitter thank you's, Facebook thank you's, people want to include you in their pictures....that's when its good! (smiling)

JWritesiT: That was very enlightening. Thank you for sharing your experiences and advice with me! I know my readers are going to want to check you out in action, can you provide information on how they can follow your activity and your upcoming Hosting and Poetry gigs?

Meet Joy Beth - The Zebra D.I.V.A.

Music truly is universal...it transcends, culture, language, religion and ability, everyone can feel the music. I want to introduce my readers to Joy Beth, an artist that feels the music and gets it.

She delivers her music with a style thats truly unique incorporating elements even that transcend sound. Joy Beth is fresh, new and innovative.

What does music mean in this day and age? What more can be added to a largely redundant music industry?

That answer - Joy Beth "The Zebra D.I.V.A." I sat down with Joy Beth to learn more about her and to get a first hand account of her contribution to the language the universe understands - Music.

JWritesiT: Thank you for sitting down with me today Joy!

Joy Beth: No Problem. I love being a part of this!

JWritesiT: What does the name Zebra D.I.V.A. signify?

Joy Beth: Zebra for me has a lot to do with my race because I am bi-racial, a Zebra also cannot be defined by any other animal. Its a symbol of diversity.

Why D.I.V.A.? Its who I am....with a whole lot of attitude (Laughing) D.I.V.A. - D: Delightful; I: Invasive V: Vivacious A: Attitude

JWritesiT: What makes you so passionate about music?

Joy Beth: God, Life, Waking up every morning, feelings, experiences all of that forms this extreme passion.

JWritesiT: What are you currently working on?

Joy Beth: I have a project that is about to launch. Its not just going to show me as an artist, its going to define what I stand for. What I believe in and the message I am trying to get across. We are all the same, it doesn't matter if we have disabilities, race, religion, sexual orientation, whether you can't see hear or talk - we are all the same. Everyone loves music - it's the universal language.

JWritesiT: Are you pursuing your music full-time?

Joy Beth: Yes I am.

JWritesiT: How long have you loved music?

Joy Beth: Since I was 3 - that I can remember (chuckling) my heart has been behind music. Before that....(laughing) I don't remember.

JWritesiT: When did you know you wanted to aspire to be a singer?

Joy Beth: When I was.....I want to say 6 or 5? My parents entered me in an American Princess Pageant. I sang on stage and wore this pretty dress.... it was the first time I had goosebumps....my first real performance. It was the first time I felt a connection and importance to music outside of church.

JWritesiT: What comes to mind when I say the word Music?

Joy Beth: Beauty, Feelings, Emotions

There are only a few voices out there that deliver the depth and poignancy of a song...the pain, the emotion and the guts of the words in time with the rhythm and melody.

Meet Clayton Bryant, vocalist extraordinaire. He has sung with some of the Best in the business. Currently he is lead backing vocalist for Ashford and Simpson, while working on a solo project. I am also proud to call him friend.

I sat down with Clayton to discuss how he does it, what made him want to pursue music and how YOU out there can do it too.

JWritesiT: Thank you Clayton for agreeing to this interview.

Clayton: No Problem!

JWritesiT: Tell us what you do for a living.

Clayton: I Sing back-up for a number of well known artists, I also sing professionally as a solo artist.

JWritesiT: What is the Best and Worst aspects of your job?

Clayton: Best- Travel, meeting new people and performing all over the world. Worst - It's not a regular 9-5, so work is spread out sometimes...

JWritesiT: Who have you performed with?

Clayton: Ummm, Elton John, Darlene Love (recent Rock n Roll Hall of Fame inductee) Ashford and Simpson, Freddie Jackson and Bruce Springsteen.

JWritesiT: Wow! What was your best gig and why?

Clayton: The best was when I did the British Rock Symphony Tour, Because it was my first tour, that I sang with a rock band.

JWritesiT: Who was the Band?

Clayton: I sang with Roger Daltrey of The Who.

JWritesiT: What does it take to make it as a Professional Singer?

Clayton: I don't know....(laughing) Defiantly I'd say, Determination, Passion and Talent.

JWritesiT: What advice can you give to someone out there trying to do the same?

Clayton: Don't take NO for an answer. Don't let other peoples opinions make you stop. If you know you have what it takes GO WITH IT.

JWritesiT: What keeps you grounded?

Clayton: God.

JWritesiT: On average what can a professional singer earn?

Clayton: It depends on what your doing. You can make anywhere from 100 to 1 million bucks...it depends.

JWritesiT: Whats next on the horizon for Clayton Bryant?

Clayton: Finishing my solo project and going on tour. My record should be done in May.

You can do it, pursue it. Clayton is an example of a man focused and determined to let the World hear his voice.

Who IS Blue Meadow? An Interview with the Latest Group to hit the Music Scene

The spirit and heart of music is alive in the hearts and minds of Blue Meadow; an all African - American rock band, new to hit the music scene.

Two of the members are high-school friends, one of which traveled the globe with a successful band before forming Blue Meadow.

Blue Meadow's music is smooth as silk and intoxicating, the vocals are melodic and sultry the right ingredients for the rock elements.

The following is an Interview with Jamal Reed (Vocalist / Guitar) of Blue Meadow:

JWritesiT: How did Blue Meadow get together?

Jamal: Blue Meadow got together last year in NYC, when I wanted to take the group thing (which all of us had done before) and take it to another level. Putting the qualities of a group and a band together and creating a whole different monster.

JWritesiT: Who are the members of Blue Meadow and what instruments do they play?

Jamal: The members are Densen Curwen-lead guitar/vocalist, Dexter Lendor-Drummer/vocalist, Joedy Imbert-rythym guitar/vocalist, and Jamal Reed-bass guitar/vocalist

JWritesiT: How does Blue Meadow differ from other bands?

Jamal: We consider ourselves different from other bands in several different ways. First of all were an all african american rock band, which is somewhat rare. We've been highly influenced by rock and roll and we would like to express ourselves using the tool of rock and roll. Secondly we ALL sing. Everyone is capable of singing lead and we all do. Often times people get surprised when our drummer takes the lead. Most rock bands the lead is usually one person and usually the rythym guitar. This band is different we all do and I (Jamal/bass guitarist) gets as many leads as does the drummer)
Third difference is we incorporate intricate harmony. I'm a big lover of harmony and sang acapella for a large portion of my life love it and we implement it. We all sang acapella at one point in our lives. Joedy and I even sang acapella together prior to blue meadow. Fourth and just as important as the other three. We want to string together influential, powerful, and positive music. We would like to debunk the stereotype that the things that sell are the negative influences. We can support art, love, responsibility, learning, and still be popular.

JWritesiT: What are the Best and Worst aspects of being part of a group?

Jamal: The Best aspect of being in a group is support. Our main goal is to support each other and moving as a team full steam ahead. 4 eyes and ears are always better than 2 and our listeners get more diversity.
Probably the Worst aspect is sometimes getting on the same page. Being in a group we have to get on the same page and push ahead. Its like a body with different parts acting individually. The body would have a hard time moving forward if the feet wanted to walk backward and the chest wanted to move forward.

JWritesiT: How did you come up with the name Blue Meadow?

Jamal: It wasn't as complex is it can sound. The color blue is the color of change, peace, and tranquility, and meadow is an open place where all are invited. We like to consider the band as a place where people can come and they can feel apart and feel peace, feel like no one is going to harm them, almost like another world different from the potentially not nice one we live in.

JWritesiT: Who are your influences?

Jamal: Blue Meadows influences range from the Beatles, Take 6, Boys II Men, Coldplay, Phil Collins, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Lady Antebellum, people who paved the way into pop culture who wouldn't normally get into because of their genre or make up.

JWritesiT: What keeps you grounded?

Jamal: Were kept humble knowing that in the music business or any other business; there are always going to be people that are more talented than you are. Its your spirit and your hard work that get you to the next level.

JWritesiT: Are you pursuing music Full time?

Jamal: Were pursuing doing music full-time if the opportunity presents itself. We will not turn down the opportunity to present our music to the world. Were definitely chasing it to an extent

JWritesiT: What is next on the Horizon for Blue Meadow?

Jamal: Next for blue meadow is trying to find a medium or mediums to take our music/message/likeness to more people. Whether it be in the form of performing live or whether it be via radio. Both options w are looking into. On top of making Blue Meadow a name recognized in NYC.

Learn what it's like to work on a cruise line - destination Hawaii! An interview with Michelle Junior Waiter NCL

I have always romanticized notions of working on a cruise line, traveling to exotic locations, meeting many new people sampling the cuisine of a tiny village in the south pacific. Going to sleep under the stars, far away from it all the gentle rocking of the ship on calm waters.

But what is it really like to work and live on a cruise line? Is it as romantic as my thoughts lead me to believe?

The following is an Interview with Michelle, Junior Waiter for Norwegian Cruise Line

JWritesiT: Thank you Michelle for allowing me to profile you!

Michelle: No problem I'm excited!

JWritesiT: Ok, What do you do for a living?

Michelle: I'm a junior waiter on a cruise ship named the "The Pride of America(POA)." It's based out of Hawaii and is the only American flagged ship in the U.S.

JWritesiT: How did you get a job with Norwegian Cruise Line?

Michelle: NCL had a job fair

JWritesiT: Where are some of the places you've traveled to?

Michelle: I've only worked in Hawaii

JWritesiT: Do you get to enjoy it? Or is it all work and no play?

Michelle: I work 7 days a week, but I do have down time.

JWritesiT: What is the Best and Worst aspect of your job?

Michelle: Best: I would have to say that the best part of working here is the people I have met. This includes guest but most importantly my co-workers. I have gained beautiful friendships.

Worst: I stay in a small little cabin with no widows & twin sized beds. I have to share a room with 2 to 3 other females. I can carry on all day about just the roommate issues. LOL!! The crew cafeteria prepares meals for us(breakfast, lunch, dinner & late night that's 1130-1am). Sometimes the food can be things I may not want or like and that's when I begin to miss home.

JWritesiT: How can someone who is interested in working for a cruise line get started?

Michelle: Apply online ncl.com

JWritesiT: On average (by no means do you need to provide actual dollars) what is the salary? How are the Benefits?

Michelle: Well, I'm a junior waiter so I'm paid bi-weekly + tips. The ship takes care of the employees room & board, as well as our meals. If you don't have any responsibilities back home, you can save a lot of money. Crew also get discounts on cruises. The company takes care of my flight travel returning & leaving for vacation.

JWritesiT: How often do you set sail a year?

Michelle: My rotation is 5 months on and 5 weeks off for vacation. We do have the option of extending our rotations longer.

JWritesiT: Besides some of the obvious perks - like travel, are there any other perks to working a cruise we may not have guessed.

Michelle: We have what the ship calls "public access" list. Employees are allowed to enjoy the amenities same as the guest. For example, eating in the many restaurants, attend shows & go on the excursions.

JWritesiT: Is there anything else you can tell us about working for a cruise line?

Michelle: **** Misconceptions about working on a cruise sips: A lot of new hires come on board thinking they're gonna party & do this & that. People who work on a cruise ship typically work long hours and don't usually have a lot of free time except maybe a day in a port every few weeks. You also have to obey very strict ship rules.

***Accomplishment: I had to undergo coast guard certified training. I have earned my STCW, TWIC and Merchant Mariner's Credential. I also won a NCL S.T.Y.L.E. Award for "Handing Hands." I was nominated by the officers that I use to serve when I worked in the Officer's Mess Hall.

JWritesiT: I appreciate you Michelle, thanks for sharing your experience with us!

How to be a Marketing & Promotions Specialist or "Brand Ambassador" - As told by Ahndraea Allen

I believe everyday at least some of us think of ways in which we can earn some extra income. We think "maybe I will start my own business" or "I think I will work part-time to make ends meet", the point is you want to make the money and you want to make it quickly and sometimes without jumping through too many hoops.

As I was pondering the many different ways to make money outside of a 9-5 desk job, I thought about Ahndraea.

Ahndraea is a college graduate and decorated athlete in Track & Field, she is also a Brand Ambassador, she works when she wants and also picks and chooses which jobs she wants to work while making a great salary.

The following interview will give you an idea of how she does it:

JWritesiT: "What is a Brand Ambassador?"

Ahndraea: "Well...it's someone who promotes a brand, rather someone who is in the field promoting a product".

JWritesiT: "What companies do you typically promote for?"

Ahndraea: "I do Events, Products (food), and Liquor promotions"

JWritesiT: "Great! Can you give me an example of a promotion you've done?"

Ahndraea: "Sure...ok, I did one recently for Kraft, it's really a form of Guerilla Marketing - meaning we (the brand ambassadors) are on the street interacting with the customer, giving out samples of the product and letting them take the product home." (Laughing) "It's the grunt work I think".

JWritesiT: "What is the typical pay scale"?

Ahndraea: "It depends...for most promotions the pay is $15-20 per hr., Liquor promotions have a bigger market so you can make more money...i've made as much as $40 an hour."

JWritesiT: "How can someone who may be interested, become a Brand Ambassador? Can you suggest a couple of sites for sign-up?"

Ahndraea: "Sure I will provide two: Go to Craigslist -> Gigs -> Brand Ambassador or Promotions, companies looking for Brand Ambassadors will post open jobs. You can also e-mail, promohazard@yahoo.com, PromoHazard Street Team Guerilla's. When composing your e-mail, let them know that you are interested in a promotion."

JWritesiT: "What is the Best and Worst aspect of this type of work?"

Ahndraea: "The best aspect is the work is relatively easy with good pay, the worst aspect is that sometimes it can take a long time to be paid, your also working as an independent contractor which means no health benefits and your paying your own taxes at the end of the year."

JWritesiT: "Ok, last question...How much can you make in a year?"

Ahndraea: "Well I can give you an estimation of how much I made from August of last year till this month....

JWritesiT: "Cool....shoot..."

Ahndraea: "I probably made between $24k and 30k"

JWritesiT: "Wow! Ahndraea, thank you for sitting down with me for this interview, it was very enlightening."

Here's how...

The recruitment industry has gone almost completely electronic - no secret there...the secret is in HOW a general resume search is conducted and how this search can effect your chances of being viewed and saved in a recruiters "saved search results" and whether you will be contacted for an interview.

The process is so much more than the qualifications and experiences you load into your resume and how much time you devote to your job search.

You have to fully be aware of the position you are applying to, following these simple rules will help your chances of moving to the TOP OF EMPLOYER SEARCHES:

1. Use actual Keywords from the job description in your resume

a) If the title is Account Manager, then no matter what your last title was - keyword Account Manager needs to be in your resume, preferably in the Objective (if your still using one) or in the Very first part of your resume.

2. Pay attention to your Employment Profile, if you are registered on a job board, then the Employment Profile you filled out initially is extremely important and needs to be updated as Needed!

a) If the employer is asking for 5-7 years experience and your updated resume qualifies but the employment profile is the same 2-5 from last year it CAN effect whether you are one of the TOP 10 in the recruiters search.

3. Update your Objective sentence frequently - Pay attention to the Keywords in the job description - in most cases there was a brief byline that attracted you to the posting, it propelled you to open the posting to view the job description. You can use a variation of that byline and incorporate in your objective. Using the recruiters wording and keywords will help give your resume a push.

4. Always update your skills and Keep abreast of the New Lingo - keep yourself current

a) eg: use words like: Optimize, analyze, Navigate, SEO (search engine marketing- if your in the advertising world)

In conclusion, experience is everything in a resume but in this ever changing landscape your experience and skills cannot stay static - change and update them frequently.
