When the senses are stalled, when the mind is at rest, when the intellect wavers not-- that, say the wise, is the highest state. This calm of the senses and the mind has been defined as yoga. One who attains it is freed from delusion.

It is indeed the mind that is the cause of men’s bondage and liberation. The mind that is attached to sense-objects leads to bondage, while dissociated from sense-objects it tends to lead to liberation. – Amrita-Bindu Upanishad

The Self that is subtler than the subtle and greater than the great is seated in the heart of every creature. One who is free from desire sees the glory of the Self through the tranquillity of the mind and senses and becomes absolved from grief. - Katha Upanishad

Albert Einstein was born at Ulm, in Württemberg, Germany, on March 14, 1879.

In 1896 he entered the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich to be trained as a teacher in physics and mathematics.

In 1901, the year he gained his diploma, he acquired Swiss citizenship and, as he was unable to find a teaching post, he accepted a position as technical assistant in the Swiss Patent Office. In 1905 he obtained his doctor's degree.

In 1909 he became Professor Extraordinary at Zurich, in 1911 Professor of Theoretical Physics at Prague, returning to Zurich in the following year to fill a similar post.

In 1914 he was appointed Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Physical Institute and Professor in the University of Berlin.

In 1914 and remained in Berlin until 1933 when he renounced his citizenship for political reasons and emigrated to America to take the position of Professor of Theoretical Physics at Princeton

He became a United States citizen in 1940 and retired from his post in 1945.

He dealt with classical problems of statistical mechanics and problems in which they were merged with quantum theory: this led to an explanation of the Brownian movement of molecules.

He investigated the thermal properties of light with a low radiation density and his observations laid the foundation of the photon theory of light.

In his early days in Berlin, Einstein postulated that the correct interpretation of the special theory of relativity must also furnish a theory of gravitation and in 1916 he published his paper on the general theory of relativity.

In the 1920's, Einstein embarked on the construction of unified field theories, although he continued to work on the probabilistic interpretation of quantum theory, and he persevered with this work in America.

He contributed to statistical mechanics by his development of the quantum theory of a monatomic gas and he has also accomplished valuable work in connection with atomic transition probabilities and relativistic cosmology.

He gained numerous awards in recognition of his work, including the Copley Medal of the Royal Society of London in 1925, and the Franklin Medal of the Franklin Institute in 1935.

He married Mileva Maric in 1903 and they had a daughter and two sons; their marriage was dissolved in 1919 and in the same year he married his cousin, Elsa Löwenthal, who died in 1936.

He died on April 18, 1955 at Princeton, New Jersey.

हामी एक जना आफन्तकहाँ टीका लगाउन गयौँ। उनी करिब असी र उनकी पत्नी पचहत्तर वर्ष जत्तिका छन्। आजभन्दा दसपन्ध्र वर्षअघि उनको घर छोराछोरी, नातिनातिनाले भरिएको हुन्थ्यो। दसैँका बेला त्यहाँको उमंगै बेग्लै हुन्थ्यो। अहिले उनका दुई छोरा सपरिवार अमेरिकामा र एक छोरी परिवारसहित अस्ट्रेलियामा स्थायीरूपमा बस्छन्। दसँका लागि भनेर उनीहरू आउनसक्ने कुरा पनि भएन। त्यसैले उनीहरूले बाबुआमालाई फोन गरेर 'सुस्वास्थ्य, प्रगति र समृद्धि'को आशीर्वाद लिए। तर त्यो ठुलो घरमा डाँडाका घाम भइसकेका ती बूढा बाबुआमाको न स्वास्थ्य ठीक छ, न कुनै प्रगति छ, न समृद्धि। उनीहरूलाई त आशीर्वाद दिने पनि कोही छैनन्। बाबु कान कम सुन्छन्। उनलाई मधुमेह भएको छ र अन्य समस्याहरू पनि छन्। त्यसैले उनलाई नियमितरूपमा डाक्टरकहाँ जानुपर्छ। आमाको अवस्था अझ दयनीय छ। उनलाई पनि मधुमेह छ, हातखुट्टा सुनिन्छ, शरीरमा जताततै दुख्छ र राति राम्रोसँग निन्द्रा लाग्दैन। सबै छोराछोरी सफल र सम्पन्न भए पनि लामो समयदेखि घरमा बस्दै आएकी एक जना घरेलु कामदारको दयामायामा तीनको जिन्दगी घसि्ररहेको छ। को नातेदार टीका लगाउन आउलान् र एकछिन भएपनि मन बहलाउन पाइएला भनेर बाबुआमा यता ढोका कुरेर बसिरहँदा उता छोराछोरी चाहिँ साथीसँग हरेक साँझ भिन्दाभिन्दै घरमा पार्टी गरेर, खुब रमाइलोसँग दसैँ मनाउने योजना बनाइरहेका थिए होलान् भन्ने अनुमान लगाउन गाह्रो पर्दैन।

दसैँको ठिक अगाडिको प्रसंग हो। मेरै टोलका एक वृद्ध दम्पतीको स्थिति माथि बयान गरिएका मेरा आफन्तको जस्तै थियो। उनका दुई छोरा क्यानडा र अमेरिकामा राम्रै जागिर खाएर बसेका छन्। एक जना छोरी काठमाडौंमै छिन्। उनी कहिलेकहीँ बाबुआमालाई भेट्न र सहयोग गर्न आउँछिन् तर उनलाई आफ्नै घरपरिवार समाल्दैमा फुर्सद छैन। ती वृद्धवृद्धामध्ये पतिको अवस्था अत्यन्त खराब थियो र पत्नीले उनको हेरचाह गर्नेगर्थिन्। तर एकाएक पत्नीको स्वास्थ्य नराम्रोसँग बिग्रियो। अस्पताल लगेको केही समयपछि उनलाई आईसीयुमा राखियो। आफन्तहरूले छोराहरूलाई खबर गरे। छोराहरूले अचानक नेपाल आउनुपर्दा चाँजोपाँजो मिलाउँदा दुई दिन बिते। त्यसपछि एक जना छोरा नेपाल आउन सके, अर्का चाहिं आउन सकेनन्। छोरा आएको केही घन्टाभित्रै आमाको निधन भयो। तेह्र दिनको कार्य सकेर चौधौँ दिन छोरा फर्किए। पत्नी गुमाएपछि ती वृद्धको अवस्था झन्झन् दयनीय बन्दै गएको छ। छोराहरू त्यो देख्दैनन्, बाबु बताउँदैनन्।

यी दुई घटनाले नेपालको र खासगरी काठमाडौँको कतिपय मध्यम र उच्चमध्यम वर्गीय परिवारको स्थितिको प्रतिनिधित्व गर्छन्। व्यक्तिगत प्रगति, समृद्धि र सुखको खोजीमा बसाइँ सर्नु स्वाभाविक मानवीय प्रवृत्ति हो। तर त्यसको सीमालाई कतिसम्म तन्काउने भन्नेमा भने संसारभर नै मानिसहरू चुत्तै्कगएका छन्। यसले पारिवारिक मूल्यमान्यता, सुखशान्ति, सामाजिक सद्भाव र जीवनको सौन्दर्य सबैमा अत्यन्त नकारात्मक असर पारिरहेको छ। नेपालको पारिवारिक बनौट पश्चीमी समाजको जस्तो होइन। अहिले पनि हाम्रो परम्परामा व्यक्तिभन्दा परिवार प्रमुख हुनेगर्छ र त्यो नै परिवार, समाज र मानव सभ्यताका लागि उत्तम बाटो हो भन्नेमा शंका छैन। तर त्यो सुन्दर र सुसंस्कृत परम्परालाई हामी बिस्तारै त्यागी रहेछौँ। परिवार पाल्न नसकेर र गर्नसक्ने केही नभएपछि गाईभैँसी, खेतबारी बेचेर, ऋण काडेर, विदेसिएका र मौका मिल्दा त्यतै घरजम गरेर नेपालमा परिवार पालिरहेका नेपालीलाई दोष दिने ठाउँ छैन। तर मैले उठाएको प्रसंग भने पेट पाल्न धौधौ भएर, छोराछोरीलाई राम्रो विद्यालयमा पढाउन नसकेर या आर्थिकरूपमा सधैं संघर्ष गर्नु परेर स्थायीरूपमा विदेश गएको वर्गको होइन। उनीहरूलाई सुखसयलको मानवसुलभ लालसले डार्‍यराएको हो। त्यस क्रममा तिनले दुईवटा महत्वपूर्ण मानवीय दायित्व बिर्सिंदै गएका छन्।

पहिलो, पारिवारीक दायित्व - यही असल समाज निर्माणको आधारशिला हो। दोस्रो, सामाजिक दायित्व - जुन विकशित समाज निर्माणको कडी हो। जिन्दगी वैयक्तिक उपलब्धिमा मात्र केन्द्रित भएपछि त्यसले कालान्तरमा न व्यक्तिको हित गर्छ न समाजको। हो! शिक्षा, अनुभव, वृत्ति विकास र पैसालाई सबैलेमहत्व दिनुपर्छ। तर घरमा वर्षौंवर्ष अशक्त बाबुआमा छाडेर, ती मर्नुभन्दा एकदुई दिनअगाडि दौडीदौडी मुख हेर्न आएर या मरिसकेपछि दागबत्ती दिन आइपुगेर, 'सफल' र 'सम्पन्न' हुनुको के अर्थ? त्यस्ता व्यक्तिहरू बहुराष्ट्रीय कम्पनीका प्रमुख कार्यकारी, विश्व बैंकका निर्देशक या राष्ट्रसंघका महासचिव नै किन नबनुन्, तिनले आफ्ना छोराछोरीलाई न पारिवारिक संस्कारको न त मानवीय मूल्यमान्यताको महत्व नै सिकाउन सक्छन्। जिन्दगीभर श्री र सम्पत्तिमा केन्द्रित भएर आफैँले अभ्यास नगरेको आदर्श छोराछोरीलाई कसरी सिकाउने? तिनका छोराछोरी पनि भोलि उनीहरूजस्तै आत्मकेन्द्रित हुने निश्चित छ।

त्यसको असर परिवारमा मात्र होइन प्रत्यक्षरूपमा समाजमा पर्दछ। त्यसैभएर, संसारमा व्यक्तिहरू ठुला हुँदैगइरहेका छन् तर समष्टिगतरूमा समाजहरू भने झन्झन् समस्याग्रस्त बन्दैगएका छन्। राष्ट्रसंघका महासचिव वान की मुनका विशेष सल्लाहकार तथा विश्वविख्यात अर्थशास्त्री जेफ्री स्याक्सले हालै आफ्नो एउटा लेखको सुरू यसरी गरेका थिए : 'हामी अत्यन्त चिन्ताग्रस्त समयमा बाँचिरहेका छौँ। संसारमा अभूतपूर्व सम्पत्ति हुँदाहुँदै पनि अत्यन्त ठूलो असुरक्षाको भावना, अस्थिरता र असन्तुष्टि छ। संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिकामा ठूलो बहूमत 'देश गलत दिशामा अघि बढिरहेछ' भन्नेमा विश्वस्त छ। निराशा बढ्दो छ। अन्य धेरै ठाउँमा यही स्थिति छ।' अनि आफ्नो फेसबुक पेजको आग्रहमा उनी लेख्छन्, 'हामीले एक्काईसौं शताब्दीको सुरूमा असल समाजको धारणालाई पुनः परिभाषित गर्न जरूरी छ ... हामीले भावी पुस्ताको पहरेदार भएर आफैँलाई समाजका आवश्यकताहरूबारे गहिरोरूपमा शिक्षित तुल्याउनुपरेको छ र दयाभाव समाजलाई बलियोसँग बाँधेर राख्ने डोरी हो भन्ने बुझ्नु परेको छ।' तर हामी व्यक्तिगत सफलता र उन्नतिको खोजीमा अति लिप्त भएका छौँ र त्यसबाट अरूको त कुरै छोडिदिऊँ जन्म दिने बाबुआमाप्रतिको दायित्वसमेत औपचारिकतामा सीमित हुँदै गएको समाजको निर्माण गरिरहेका छौँ। हुनत, त्यसका लागि छोराछोरीमात्र हैन बाबुआमा पनि उत्तिकै दोषी छन्। छोराछोरीले अमेरीकी ग्रीनकार्ड या नागरिकता लिए भनेर दँग पर्ने राम्रै पढेलेखेका र राम्रै घरजम भएका कयौं नेपालीलाई मैले भेटेको छु। नेपालमै आएर केही गर्छुभन्दा 'होइन, आउनु हुँदैन' भनेर छोराछोरीलाई आउन निरुत्साहित गर्ने नेपाली देखेको छु। त्यस्तो मानसिकताले दीर्घकालमा कसैको पनि हित गर्दैन।

नेपालजस्तो देशमा त झन् पारिवारिक अवस्था र देशको परिस्थिति दुवै कारणले नेपालीहरू अलि पढेपछि, देखेपछि, केही कार्य अनुभव बटुलेपछि, बालबच्चा धेरै ठुला नहुँदै, आफ्नो र आमाबाबुको उमेर छंदै देश फर्किनु अत्यन्त जरुरी भइसकेको छ। विकसित मुलुकहरूमा राज्यले कमसेकम बूढाबूढीका लागि राम्रो प्रबन्ध मिलाएको हुन्छ र स्वास्थ्य सुविधा पनि दिएको हुन्छ। हामीकहाँ त्यस्तो कुनै व्यवस्था छैन। राम्रा पढेलेखेका, सफल छोराछोरी हुँदाहुँदै बूढाबूढीले बुढेसकाल आफैँ र घरेलु कामदारका भरमा समाल्नुपर्ने स्थिति सिर्जना भएको छ। अर्को, देशलाई पनि त सक्तो धेरै सक्षम नागरिकको खाँचो छ। विकसित विश्वमा हाम्रोजस्तो आदर्शवादी सुनिने राष्ट्रियताको भावनाको त्यति महत्व रोत्तै्कन। किनभने त्यो समाज विकसित भइसक्यो र त्यहाँबाट केही सक्षम नागरिकहरू विदेश बसाइँ सर्दा त्यसले तात्विक असर पार्दैन। त्यसमा पनि त्यसको सोधभर्ना धेरै हदसम्म विदेशबाट बसाइँ आउने सझम आप्रवासीबाट हुनेगर्छ। हाम्रो देशको परिस्थिति भने बेग्लै छ। त्यसैपनि गएगुजि्रएको अवस्थामा भएको देशबाट ठूलो संख्यामा सझम नागरिकहरू सधैँका लागि मुगलान भासिएपछि देश नासझमहरूको हातबाट संचालित हुने नै भयो। अनि यहाँ चाहिँ 'यस्तो स्थिति छ, नेपाल आएर के गर्ने?' भन्ने टिप्पणी छोराछोरीलाई स्थायीरूपमै विदेशमा बस्न प्रेरित गर्ने र विदेशमै बस्न चाहने दुवै जमातबाट जताततै सुनिन्छ। हो! शैक्षिक या व्यावसायिक दक्षता कम भएका नेपालीले नेपाल फर्किनुअगाडि राम्ररी सोच्नुपर्छ। किनभने चाहाना र भावनामात्र भएर हुँदैन। आफू र परिवारको बांच्ने आधार पहिल्याउनै पर्नेहुन्छ। तर शिक्षित र व्यावसायिक दक्षता भएका अधिकांश नेपाली र तिनका बाबुआमाले त्यस्तो चिन्ता गर्नै पर्दैन। पेसागत, व्यक्तिगत र कतिपयका हकमा सामाजिकरूपमा अत्यन्त उपलब्धिमूलक जीवनयापन गरिरहेका धेरै नेपाली नेपाल फर्किएका छन्। त्यसरी फर्किनेहरू कोही पनि बेकार भएका मैले देखेको छैन। उनीहरूले आफ्ना छोराछोरीलाई नेपालकै वा भारतका राम्रा विद्यालयमा पढाएका छन् र त्यसमा सन्तुष्ट पनि छन्।

गुजारा गर्ने आधार र आफूसँग शिक्षा एवं सीप छ भने नेपाल फर्किन तीनवटा प्रतिवद्धतामात्र आवश्यक हुन्छ। पहिलो, विदेशमा काम गर्दैजांदा हासिल हुनसक्ने उच्च पद, प्रतिष्ठा र आम्दानी त्याग्ने दृढता। यसैको लोभले धेरै आप्रवासीहरू फर्किने रहर हुँदाहुँदै पनि विदेशमै फसेको मैले देखेको छु। दोस्रो, पहिलो सन्तानलाई लगभग दस वर्षको उमेरभन्दा उता विदेशमा नराख्ने दृढता। किनभने त्योभन्दा बढी उमेर हुन थालेपछि उनीहरूलाई फर्काउन भाषागत र अन्य विविध कारणले असंभव प्रायः हुन्छ र फर्काऊँदा उनीहरूमाथि अन्याय हुनसक्छ। र, तेस्रो प्रतिबद्धता बाबुआमासँग सम्बन्धित छ। बाबुआमाले पनि छोराछोरी नेपालमै छन् भन्दा हीनताबोध गर्ने र अमेरिका या बेलायतमा छ भन्दा गर्व महसुस गर्ने मानसिकता त्याग्नुपर्छ। यति भयो भने अधिकांश सक्षम नेपालीलाई नेपाल फर्किन खासै गाह्रो पर्दैन। त्यसो गर्दा उनीहरूको विदेशमा बस्नु र जागिर खानुको 'रबाफ' घट्ला, कतिपय स्थितिमा आम्दानी पनि कमै होला तर तिनले आफूलाई पहिलेभन्दा बढी सुख र सन्तुष्टि भने अवश्यै महसुस गर्नेछन्। बाबुआमा र आफन्तसँगको निकटता, त्यसले बालबच्चामा पार्ने सकारात्मक असर अनि राष्ट्र र सुसंस्कृत समाजको निर्माणमा पुर्‍याउनसक्ने योगदानले उनीहरूलाई आनन्दको थप अनुभूति हुनेछ। त्यति भयो भने कम शिक्षा र सीप भएका कारण विदेसिन बाध्य नेपालीका लागि पनि नेपालमै अवसरहरू सिर्जना हुने सम्भावना स्वतः बढ्नेछ।

प्रगतिका नाममा हामीले पारिवारिक मूल्यमान्यता तथा सामाजिक दायित्व दुवै नष्ट गर्दै गएका छौँ। बाबुआमाले मात्र 'तिमीहरूले पढ्यौ, सिक्यौ, अलिकति कमायौ, नकमाएको भए पनि हामीसँगै पुग्दो छँदैछ, अब आऊ यहीँ, जस्तो हुन्छ त्यस्तै गरेर बसौँ। हाम्रो, तिमीहरूको, केटाकेटीको सबैका लागि राम्रो हुन्छ, देशका लागि पनि राम्रो हुन्छ' भन्ने हो भने, शिक्षा र सीप भएका धेरै युवाहरू फकिनेमा शंका छैन। बाध्यताहरूलाई अपवाद मानेर भन्नुपर्दा, मर्ने बेलामा दागबत्ती दिन जाने संस्कृतिको विकास गर्नुभन्दा जिन्दगीमा अलि कमै प्रगति भए पनि पारिवारिक र समाजिक दायित्वबोधको संस्कृति विकास गर्नु अत्यावश्यक भइसकेको छ। त्यसैले, संम्भव हुनेहरू सबैले बेलैमा छोराछोरीलाई नेपाल फर्काउनेबारे गहिरोसँग सोच्ने हो कि?
