Station in Life from the Dashanatha (Dasha lord) in Vedic Astrology

The present state of affairs in the life of a human being is obviously judged from the changeable and dynamic factors in the horoscope. When we ask ‘how are you’ or ‘how are things’, these parts or constituents of the horoscope come to the forefront. In Vedic astrology, the foremost amongst such factors is the Dasha, and more particularly, the lord of the Dasha. This planet is called the Dashanatha in Jyotisha.

The Dashanatha is far more important than is ordinarily thought. He is the temporary Lagna during the course of the entire Dasha. Suppose someone has Virgo Lagna and Venus is placed in the 10th Bhava from the Udaya Lagna in Gemini. When Shukra/ Venus Dasha commences, the Lagna or the Dasha Lagna is determined by Shukra and Gemini acts as the active Lagna during the Dasha.

The reason why the Dashanatha is more important that might appear to be the case at first glance is that He rules the life of the individual during the Dasha. What could be more important.

This proposition furnishes the first basis for the judgement of the various Antaradashas in that Dasha or Mahadasha. When we see the relative positioning of the AD lord from the Dashanatha, it immediately reveals the fundamental configuration or context of that period. Say, an Antaradasha lord is in the 2nd Bhava from the Dashanatha, before rejoicing about the favourable Bhava lordships of the AD Graha from the Udaya Lagna and the positive placement therefrom, it has to be recognised that the AD lord is the main Maraka or the killer planet from the Dashanatha. Immediately, the enquiry must focus on whether there are vulnerabilities which may make this placement conspicuous and if there are then this one facet will become most important.

Similarly, if the Antaradasha Graha is in Dusthana then it is likely to be a time beset with fear and anxiety.

Charts are evaluated in a layered way but the dynamic aspects worked out from the Dashanatha are certainly one of the prominent matters which are required to be delved into.

When we consider the Dashanatha, it is obvious that the study cannot overlook the Rashi where the Dashanatha is placed. This sign is referred to as the Dasha Rashi both in Graha and Rashi Dashas in Jyotisha. The Rashis in the zodiac contain material reality and furnish the context for things. The Dasha Rashi furnishes the Lagna for the Dasha and the constituents of it will inform life during the currency of the Dasha and rule the circumstances or context; to reiterate and emphasise, these will be from the Dasha Rashi and not the Udaya Lagna.

The Dasha Rashi may have some peculiarity. Even if there is nothing adverse or overly positive in the placement of the Rashi from the Udaya Lagna, the Rashi may house an exalted or debilitated Dashanatha, This is a specific example to state that the Dasha will be in a particular environment overwhelmingly dictated by the exaltation or debility of the planet. Needless to say, the exalted planet especially if favourably disposed to the Lagna and promising a good Dasha will yield a phase of life which will be extremely pleasant. The expression ‘phase of life’ has been used because Mahadashas in the Vimshottari Dasha scheme can be very long and are crucial for that one reason itself.

Let us take an example where the Dashanatha is a benefic planet but debilitated and is placed in an auspicious Bhava from the Lagna. Debilitation is a specific Avastha which shows receptivity and humility as defining marks. It shows that a Graha is very weak. If a planet is not debilitated in the Rashi but is debilitated in the Navamsha it is more difficult to go through the Dasha because with Navamsha debility, the Graha will act as Neecha throughout the horoscope in all divisional charts. It is also at times referred to as Bhagya debilitation. Sometimes debility accrues when a planet is exalted but retrograde and acts as a debilitated planet. In this situation the ideals in matters associated with the Graha are at their highest but the person lives an outwardly ordinary life through the Dasha. This kind of an experience is extremely difficult to go through since for mere mortals, as distinguished from the saints, the chasm between ideational and manifest reality is huge and very difficult to assimilate.

When such a planet is well-placed from the Udaya Lagna, He is favourably inclined but is not able to do anything because of the weakness. The individual has to discharge the negative Karma associated with the Neecha Graha and try and use the context or the circumstantial benefit, even though it will not seem like much at the time. The extraordinary thing is that during the Dasha of a planet which is notable for some reason or the other, the physical appearance of the person will be dictated by the Dashanatha in the Dasha Rashi. The features of the Udaya Lagna may not be discernible. This is the reason behind moments when one says ‘I do not know what happened to him’ or ‘I could hardly recognise him’.

The Bhava placement of the Dashanatha furnishes the other context as well. The significations of the Bhava become dominant. For example, the Dasha of a Graha placed in the 9th House will involve the significations of the 9th House heavily, like the father, or higher education, religion, Dharma, independence, foreign travel, temples, law and so on. Life will revolve around these significations throughout the Dasha period. The Antaradasha planets have signification of their own, but it is important to remember that they work within the framework of the Mahadasha.

The change of Dasha can bring a change in Dashanatha and Dasha Rashi both, because in some cases, the subsequent Dasha may have some commonalities with the preceding one. There is therefore a change of scenery all around with a change of Dasha bearing significant differences from the time that has passed. The Dashanatha is a Graha with a personality and significations which may be totally different from the other one. There is an accompanying inward change as well. With Chitrapaksha Ayanamsha, it is seen that basically a notable Dasha change feels as if a switch has been flipped and almost exactly on time.

The greater the difference between the two sets of Dashanathas and the Dasha Rashis, the greater the difference in the phases of life lived. If, if the Prarabdha is such that, for example, the Dasha of a debilitated planet is followed by that of an exalted one, there may not be any connect between that which has gone and that which has replaced it. In such a scenario, and it is not an uncommon one, Interpersonal realities, associations, places and contexts all change completely. Exaltation has Vishnu Tattwa, the primordial element of sustenance. Depending on the Graha/ the Dashanatha who is exalted, the highest attributes of that Graha will be showered on the individual generally throughout the Dasha.

Appearance will change, the working of the brain will change and the nature of life choices will change. It is quite true that Dashas are modified by the transit/ Gochara of important Grahas and the transit of important planets are, in turn, modified by the Dasha. For ease of reference, to gauge how things are at a moment in time, simply examine the Dashanatha in some detail.

Since all these are matters of manifest and visible life, they have to be judged from the Arudha Lagna. The core Karma is seen from the Lagna but how it manifests must be seen from the Arudha Lagna and with reference to all the other Arudha Padas. The judgment of results from the Arudha Lagna is entirely different from the effects which come from placements relative to the Lagna. All Bhavas from the AL are magical in the sense that they show some aspect of visible life but some are more magical than the others.

Let us pick only three for the moment- two of these would make any select list, otherwise it is a free exercise depending on the person undertaking it. The AL, of course, is the manifest image of the person himself and a strong or exalted planet there can dictate to all the other Bhavas. The 7th Bhava from the AL is crucial in that it indicates the emergence of the person into the world. A strong or exalted benefic here can be extremely auspicious for station, prosperity and fame in the world. Lastly, consider the 10th Bhava from the AL indicating the way in which the work or career of the person is seen. The best Yogas when formed from the AL will be seen to give the results that they promise.

Dashanatha has to be in the good books of the lord of the Chandra Rashi because the Atmakaraka may be king of the horoscope but Chandra is the king of experiences in this life. If Chandra is happy and pleased, that is mostly the end of the discussion. He exalts in pleasure and plenty and therefore if Moon supports the Dasha, life will unfold in a positive way throughout that period.

The Context, Purpose and Direction of Interpretation in Vedic Astrology

A frequent mistake which is often made in Jyotisha thought is to consider events in Vedic astrology charts as complete or absolute or all encompassing. These words and phrases may not accurately capture the essence of what is being communicated, and so illustrations follow.

The first and foremost mistake is to consider the horoscope as containing everything. One has an erroneous conviction that everything that happens in life must show up in some way in the horoscope, and even more acutely, something that appears to be indicated in the horoscope must happen, otherwise something is wrong.

In the Ramayana, why was the Vanavasa or Agyatavasa not predicted by the great astrologers of the time, especially in the incarnation of Sri Rama Avatara. It could not have been that it was not known. One may conjecture but it is certain that there was no prediction. Still, Moola Dasha system which is used to time curses in the charts, effectively indicates the 14 years’ period of exile in the Mahadasha of Shani. We do not wish to enter any debate regarding Moola Dasha and the role it played when Sri Rama’s horoscope was examined during the incarnation. There is a teaching that Karma will most definitely bear results and one will have to experience the good and bad effects of past Karma. This is Prarabdha.

The Shashtyamsha Chakra, the D-60 chart, contains the Sancita Karma- the entire storehouse of Karma done at the time of commencement of any given lifetime. From this Sancita Karma, the Prarabhda is drawn to be experienced. The new Karma which we perform is Kriyamana Karma. Some say in Manushya Yoni, one is free to perform Kriyamana Karma even though Prarabdha Karma will inspire the individual to act in some way or the other. Others say that this is not so. Freewill is to be judged from the Upacaya Bhavas from the Udaya Lagna, and since that is so, freedom is also determined, at least to a large extent.

In this brief background, we must also understand a view relating to the Prashna Chakra. There is a view that the Rashi chart is changing with the Karma we perform in this life and this is evidenced from the Prashna Chakra which may be cast from time to time. A separate teaching suggests that this may not be correct. This latter teaching states that the Prarabdha cannot be changed but its experience is modified by the Karma done or being done in this life. For example, a bad Dasha starts when a person is performing good deeds in this life- what can be expected is that while the bad Karma will manifest, its experience becomes more tolerable. The frequent sight of good people suffering can be explained by this; also ‘nice guys finish last’ is obviously fallacious. Nice persons running a very adverse Dasha can bring up the rear and the not-so-nice persons may have a more difficult time based on the proposition above. The expression Dasha, in line with the theme of this paper, should not be restricted merely to Dasha but also to transits, maturity age of important planets and any other relevant indicator such as Charakaraka replacement and so on.

The truth which emerges is that insofar as the framework of life at any given point in time goes, it is absolutely and completely destined. The framework is comprised of the result of only two types of Karma, good and bad, leading to happiness and suffering respectively. Human action is not comprised in Prarabdha, it is arguably wholly contained in Kriyamana Karma. This explains the conduct of Mr. Doubting Thomas who repeatedly urges- What is destiny. Look, I can pick this glass up at will. Let us see destiny stop me. We can therefore comfortably leave Mr. Thomas to his own devices.

Dasha is the most crucial tool to see the changing colours of life with greatest ease, exactly as promised in the horoscope. Obviously, this is most in evidence when the concerned Graha is strong and capable of manifesting notable results. Dasha controls a major part of the manifestation of Prarabdha Karma because it is well-known dictum in Jyotisha that results of Grahas are felt in their Dashas. The Graha is always there and in some way or the other will be a part of life but somehow unless a person well-versed in the Shastra is studying the charts, the significance of the Graha does not reveal itself till the Dasha of that Graha comes. Vimshottari Dasha reckoned from the Janma Nakshatra (Janma Vimshottari) always gives results even if a special or conditional Dasha applies in the horoscope,

Suppose the Dasha of a Graha in special strength is running, and the individual is truly enjoying the results, even so he may feel in phases that the crests have vanished without explanation. There will be an explanation, and at times it may be a difficult one, but the truth is that a strong Dasha does not always at each moment of the Dasha give identical results. His strength will fundamentally always be there but He will somehow simply slip into high gear on His own, with or without reference to the Antaradasha. The most accurate understanding would be that the Dasha of a strong and auspicious Graha is the ideal time for Sukha, or to put it better, results of past Punya, to manifest in the ways indicated by the Graha. This also puts predictive work in its proper light.

Mahadashas are long and their impact is hardly ever visible day to day. It is only after a few years when there is a stock-taking that the distance covered becomes clear. The Antaradasha is what is visible and at special times or complicated transitions in the horoscope, even this may become enigmatic. Other Dasha levels may be used as found practicable in the circumstances. Significant events are likely to always be indicated in the horoscope, including in the Dasha but it may not be correct to try and correlate simply everything, or every little trifle, to factors in the horoscope.

Having said that, with the sheer number of predictive tools that we have in classical and traditional Vedic astrology, predictions are made seemingly endlessly about any number of important matters, correctly with restraint. The thoughts in this article can help train the mind to focus on the charts in a way that is meaningful, sincere, deliberate, important, and above all intended to help the individual in the most significant and weighty manner possible.

It is said that unless every last vestige of bad Karma in the Prarabdha is burnt through experience, one cannot be truly and completely happy, or to put it in other words, experience the full results of past Punya Karma. In a bad Dasha, obviously negative Karma is being burnt through suffering and the question of experiencing complete happiness does not generally arise. Happiness and suffering alternate. In excellent Dashas one will have ordinary or bad sub-periods for one reason or another and similarly in a bad Dasha there will be alleviation and success at some level, if so indicated, from time to time.

It is absolutely imperative to link the practice of Jyotisha with other aspects of Sanatana Dharma such as the Puranas, Srimad Bhagwad Gita and any other scripture. For example, in the Srimad Bhagwad Purana, it is specifically stated that the results of past good and bad deeds appear on their own in the same manner as the eye naturally blinks. This is a clear explanation of the way in which Prarabdha manifests in life and since Jyotisha studies this, it should be studied accordingly.

One of the ways in which to check whether some negative Karma is being deliberately burnt, especially if the exercise appears inscrutable, is to examine the Atmakaraka, more so if the experience is in a conventionally positive Dasha. There are some clues to this. When the Atmakaraka becomes overt in a positive sense, he may bring access to saints, even in Kaliyuga. By definition, the AK is like a saint. The suffering given by the AK is only to clean the soul of negative Karma. Why. It is so because the soul can then act in accordance with the tenets of Dharma, which may have to be construed and interpreted from time to time.

With this approach, Jyotisha becomes more aligned with Dharma as a Vedanga- Jyotisha, albeit in its own way, will turn the person seeking to understand things, towards God. Jyotisha is not meant for dry and isolated predictions, rather it is the system through which the journey of the soul in a lifetime and beyond is to be understood. This is the true context of Jyotisha.

The Curious Case of the Atmakaraka (AK) in Vedic Astrology

One of the entities one encounters in spirituality a lot is the soul. On the rare occasion, one would encounter the funny man, invariably in western philosophy who would scoff at the notion of the soul. And why not- if you are going to go primarily by empiricism and so on, then where is the proof of the soul in thought systems across the world. These disciplines are founded on the belief that all knowledge is sensory. We are not really on these systems, but we are brushing past them merely to found this discussion regarding testing the reality of the existence of the soul on the seeming solidity of this plain jane proposition.

While the soul is beyond the Manas or the mind and the Tanu or the body and its senses, in Vedic astrology the existence of the soul is proved as being self-evident because of the measurable performance of the Atmakaraka, the significator of the soul in Jyotisha; measurable, as in capable of being directly perceived by the mind and the senses, since we are speaking now of events and experiences precipitated by the Atmakaraka as promised in any given horoscope. Jyotisha therefore proves the existence of the soul through the manifestation of the working of the Atmakaraka (AK) especially the Chara AK.

The experiential working of the AK is curious indeed. It is completely different in nature and intent from the working of any other planet in any horoscope, and if it is not so in your good opinion, it will be soon. The if not part applies mostly to benefic Atmakarakas who may give expected and elevatedly expected and desired results to start with, or in the early part of the piece. But then if any benefic was so greatly benefic, there would have been no question of birth. Birth necessarily involves an element of dealing with negative or bad Karma, along with enjoying the pleasures, benefits and happiness that come from good Karma. So then the benefic planet who is just that if not the Atmakaraka, is never only just that when He is the AK.

The reason why the benefic AK, let alone the malefic AK is not simply another Graha, standing for that which He is supposed to indicate, is reflected in the extent of longitude of arc traversed by the planet, which as a rule, is the highest amongst all the Grahas in the horoscope. These highest degrees of the Atmakaraka, any Atmakaraka, bear testament to the fact that maximum Karma being carried by this planet in the horoscope. The expression maximum karma should not be pessimistically assumed only to be negative or bad Karma. A good reason to dispel any such doubts is that the best and the highest Rajayogas involve the participation of the Atmakaraka.

Surya is the Naisargika Atmakaraka for everyone. It would be prudent to think about the Sun as we begin our reflections on the Atmakaraka. The Sun does not often form part of discussions. He is the one planet least discussed in Jyotisha. Why is that so. Surya is the King of all the Grahas, Deva Grahas and Daitya Grahas both. He is the Mahagraha and sits above all the other Grahas. Is it any surprise then that He is not known well, or at least not discussed profusely. What is there to discuss about the King. If you say something you are not supposed to say, you could be punished. If you say positive things without restraint, you could be guilty of flattery. And of course, in order to say something about the King, you would have to know the King, or at least know of the King. How many could lay claim to something like this. Surya is a malefic planet. He is hot, aloof and lordly. I do not think Surya is going to win any popularity contests in the unlikely event someone put Him in one. But should Surya be winning popularity contests in any case. I think not. Does it reflect otherwise on the Sun that He is not the type for popularity contests. I think not.

Naisargika Karakas are representatives of God. They control certain areas of life for everyone. These are natural significators and do not depend on the configurations in a horoscope. Surya signifies the Sarvatman, the universal soul. The understanding of Surya in a horoscope will reveal the trajectory of the soul, generally, strength and weaknesses indicating the strength and weaknesses of Karma attached to the soul. Surya, is the King and so the soul is kingly, and therefore the Chara AK is kingly. The Chara AK is the specific indicator of the soul in any horoscope. He is the real King of the horoscope for a given person. What more can we venture about the nature of the Chara AK based on the verisimilitude with the Sun. Agni Tattwa burns and therefore the Chara AK burns us while burning the sins of the past. Since Surya is the King, the Chara AK in strength is capable of giving profound Rajayoga. The King has the power of Danda and therefore the Chara AK can punish us. The punishment appears to be especially acute in the Vimshottari Dasha or Antaradasha of the AK. The reason is that the Moon controls the Vimshottari Dasha and the mind indicated by Chandra is exalted in the pleasures of Rohini and Vrishabha Rashi; the mind does not like the burning and the soul-level cleansing in the Dasha of the AK.

The rule of thumb is that the AK has to become favourable at some point, which happens only when the negative Karma or sin is burnt through suffering. The primary areas of suffering in this context are the natural significations of the Chara AK and the afflictions of the AK. Benefic Atmakaraka planets in particular sometimes act favourably to start with, as ventured above, and more so if they are in strength and/ or rule the Udaya Lagna as well. Benefic planets in strength will indicate the Punya Karma in the Prarabdha although Rajayoga can and often does come through Yogas formed by highly malefic Grahas or even greatly malefic Yogas themselves. This is the most puzzling thing- a complete breach of morality of the past births can lead to astounding Rajayoga. However, this can be treated as the exception rather than the rule, and even as an exception, there is no denying the fact that while Rajayoga may come, the terrible effects of the Yoga will also be felt. Anyway, to return to the benefic Atmakaraka. It is an important and difficult question as to which soul path is preferable, that of the benefic or the malefic. The answer will depend largely on the moorings of the Jataka.

Rahu can be one illustration of the curious working of the Atmakaraka Graha. Rahu is a hedonistic planet, signifying shock, deceit and cheating amongst His significations. And yet, when Rahu becomes the AK, while the individual himself will have diabolical experiences ripe with deceit and delusion, he cannot practice the same conduct. It is payback for bad Karmas performed in the past life. Rahu is a dire malefic and as the AK, corresponding to the shocking experiences that lie in store, promises spiritual advancement. Rahu AK will burn, and burn the sin, through shock, cheating and depravity inflicted on the individual. This is similar to the opposition of Rahu to the Arudha Lagna (AL) where His 2nd or 12th Bhava aspect to the AL, depending on how one construes His aspects, will hang the individual through ill-advised expenses and leisure, and with the hangman’s noose on the neck of the individual. This also leads to spirituality because the individual will seek understanding of the whys and hows of that which has transpired.

Which malefic planet will give the most severe experience as the Atmakaraka, but only by definition? Only by definition, because malefics are generally Papa Grahas and are not to be easily outdone by the leader; in actual fact it will depend on the various factors involving the malefic AK in the chart. However, by definition, it cannot but be Surya. The Naisargika AK has become the Chara AK. The burning is at an extreme. If the AK is strong, supportive of the Lagna, and in favourable combinations, then when He becomes positively inclined in the horoscope, one could hope for the results of Punya Karma of the past to come through in an equally, correspondingly splendorous way. Not only is the burning caused by Surya AK the most intense, it is the most difficult to endure because of the late maturity of the Sun, the significator of the father. When he becomes the soul father so to speak, through the individual with Surya AK in the charts, it will be around His age of maturity and till then the person burns and burns without any relief in sight.

It must not be forgotten that the Sun is a malefic planet and the burning of sin, and of the individual is terrible in nature. There is another distinction to be kept in mind- Surya is a Krura Graha not a Papa Graha. The fire is akin to that of a Havan or Yajna but fire is fire and burns as fire does. The point is that the cruelty behind the experience is divine, meant to cleanse the individual of the maximum sin indicated by the Graha. In the case of the Sun, it could be indiscriminate cruelty in past births, arrogance, ego, megalomania and so on. Resultantly, Surya AK will precipitate events throughout till He becomes favourable, which absolutely demolish the ego. Humiliation will be visited upon the person in all shapes and forms. Oftentimes, this is expressed to state that the individual must learn how to overcome his egoistic tendencies and embrace humility. There is truth in this but then a person with his soul ruled by the Sun cannot be expected to become the antithesis of the Sun. A better way to understand this would be that the individual must understand the ego and the self, and if the future demands egoistic conduct then it must be wholly within the confines of spirituality and more importantly, Dharma.

The most unbelievable thing is that these extremely demanding results will obtain even when Surya AK is very strong in every way in the horoscope. While with Surya Graha not being AK such results could never be expected since they are opposite to the significations of the Sun, only these might be reasonably expected till Surya matures and orders that the punishment is done and over with. The reason behind this astonishing manifestation is that the AK also acts as the 8th lord of the horoscope and has the responsibility of cleaning up the past Karma. The other contributors to the punishment are the malefic conjunctions of the AK and such aspects to the AK, by sign aspect. When the AK is in great strength, He is free to do as he pleases which prompts us to prefer an AK in strength but not in too great a strength. A very powerful Surya AK can demolish the sense of self, of identity of the individual when self and identity are the hallmarks of a person ruled by the Sun. The AK will negate all His positive significations, subvert them, injure them till His ward repays the results of excesses of past lives and emerges as clean as he is destined to, in a given life.

The same thing happens with a very strong benefic AK but in reverse order. The benefic planet is quite happy to give conventionally positive results in keeping with His strength. Benefic Atmakarakas do not precipitate the terrible tests and trials of the malefic Atmakarakas, but this is necessarily true only in principle. Otherwise, the station and the affliction of the AK will once again reveal the real life story which may unfold later. If the AK is extremely strong, the benefic planet may precipitate severe trials in the very areas that the individual holds most dear and has enjoyed greatly in life, or so he thinks. It must be noted that the benefic AK is capable of precipitating events related to His significations which can be adverse, even when He is not in remarkable strength.

Suppose Rahu aspects the AK- it is a pointer to the shocking deviousness which will be experienced at the soul level. Deep scrutiny of the horoscope will reveal all details. If an Anga of the Panchanga such as the Tithi is ruled by Rahu, the quality of time itself is poisoned and flawed and the shocks and depravity will likely be searing to the extent that they may leave lasting and permanent damage. If the AK is very strong then the person will survive the experiences possibly intact as a functioning human being though it will take some doing precisely because the AK is involved. There could be betrayal, cheating, falsehood, illusion, delusion, make-believe, treachery and such matters which will impact the life experience. If two or more malefics aspect the AK, the situation is serious. It is decidedly extreme if the AK is placed in Dusthana or another negative Bhava from the Udaya Lagna. If the AK and the Lagnesha are both involved in the affliction by two or more malefics, then damage to the personality is quite possible and growth as a person will be impacted in some manner.

The phrase that the AK has to turn favourable may mean that it will indicate a cessation of the fruits of past adverse Karma and the advent of the fruits of Punya Karma directly attached with the soul. It will also indicate that the Atmakaraka has to begin acting as the Lagna Lord and end his role as the 8th lord of the Rashi Chakra. AK acts as the Lagna Lord and the 8th Lord because He is the prime significator of the Self or Nija/ own Karma and both these Bhavas are very personal to the individual. When the AK is the Lagnesha in any chart, it is a combination for Rajayoga. The King has decided to take care of the individual- he is God’s child or the child of destiny. The Bhava ruled by the AK is thought of as the temple of the king and the individual is very sensitive regarding matters indicated by this Bhava. All the other things narrated in this paper may come to pass, but the Atmakaraka, who carries a spark of God himself, protects the individual as an instrument of God.

Since the Atmakaraka carries a spark of God, all matters indicated by the AK must necessarily come to pass. These cannot be stopped. These ought not to be interfered with by any other for it would mean going against the Will of God. Therefore any Graha who betrays disobedience of the AK is destroyed and all matters indicated by that Graha are destroyed. For example, when a Graha and Bhava are in Marana Karaka Sthana (MKS) from the AK, these houses and planets are destroyed and removed from the life of the individual. Grahas in the 4th and 7th from Budha AK suffer tremendously, similarly in the 7th Bhava from Mangala AK and in the 6th Bhava from Shukra AK. Surya AK in the 10th Bhava from the Lagna is known to be the most powerful position for the Sun, but when He becomes Atmakaraka, the placement is highly adverse for the father of the individual who may be absent in the life of the individual and may even pass away early. This also happens generally because Surya is also the Naisargika Karaka for the father. Shukra will remove the planet in the 6th Bhava from Himself and if that Graha is a lord of Kendra, then one of the pillars of life may collapse, as indicated by the vanquished planet.

Clearly, without an understanding of the Atmakaraka, there can be no Phalita Jyotisha. The AK controls the horoscope, life and therefore also readings in these respect. Papa and Punya Karma are like flipping a switch. There is not much to be done in order to leave the results of one behind and start with those of the other. It is simply a question of specific quanta of Karma and the destined time for things to happen. This is to be interpreted according to the following codec- Grahas in Kendra to the AK follow the orders of the AK immediately and completely, followed by those in Panaphara and lastly by those in Apoklima Bhavas.

One wants to understand the unfolding of Karma through Vedic astrology, once it becomes clear that surprising though it is to the modern, uninitiated mind, you could readily say, broad brushes, that everything happens as indicated in the horoscope; barring minor irritants such as wanting things to happen at a particular time and in a particular way, but then what is actually happening is very much in conformity with what a well-versed person would fathom from the various combinations formed by the Grahas, Rashis and any number of Jyotisha parameters.

So, suppose one is at a crucial juncture in life for example, and either has sufficient knowledge of the Vedanga or is in a position to consult a Jyotishi, what could some of the more important areas of scrutiny be, so as to get a firm grip on the prospects. These need not be discussed in any particular order since quite obviously the meaning is that they ought to all be considered, apart from any other areas that come to mind, for this type of study or reflection is quite fluid or subjective and is not really formulaic.

There is a general mistake made in overlooking transits on the Arudha Lagna (AL) itself. The AL indicates all life itself, everything that is visible about any person. It is the Lagna for the Arudha Chakra, and it is the AL which gives meaning to that chart. When Jyotisha is being looked at to determine Karmic prospects and next steps, something of overarching important such as Saturn transit on the Arudha Lagna cannot be overlooked. Shani is very crucial and His transit on the AL indicates that overall life itself is feeling the burden of past Karma, assuming there is burden to be discharged, at that time. Any other matters will almost run subservient to this kind of transit. Everything stands to get lowered in stature, blocked, overlooked, invisible and somewhat dirty with past Karma. If such a transit should occur at a conspicuous time in the Dasha system, such as Dasha Sandhi, then the Dasha will necessarily have to be evaluated keeping in mind the modifications exerted by this transit. It is not just the transit of Shani in the 4th House or the 8th House which is to be studied; that on the Arudha Lagna itself can never be overlooked.

Since it is a recent note and is available for reading, let us also bring in Yuti/ conjunctions of planets which are influencing the Dasha in the manner stated. Now, if the Mahadasha of a dire malefic has commenced, and which is conjoined a strong or exalted benefic, then the person who is aware of the principles governing Yuti of Grahas in the context of Dasha, would expect positive events to fructify immediately. Those expectations might be belied if the transit on the AL is overlooked. It is an onerous time and may require remedies to get through.

Dasha Sandhi is also a testing time because life realities are being altered. If the succeeding Dasha is very different in nature from the one which has just gone, and works from different areas in the horoscope then it would bring in major changes and make for a new or renewed life experience.

Leaving conjunctions for a moment, let us dwell upon the Paka Lagna, the sign where the lord of the Udaya Lagna is placed. This is where the intelligence and brain function of the individual is being applied. It matters a lot where the Dashanatha is placed from the Paka Lagna. It matters even more where the Dashanatha is placed from the Atmakaraka. The 8th House from these places, for instance, is a place of transformation and plumbing the depths of Karma in some way or the other. From the Paka Lagna, it can certainly indicate a time of changing of the self. The 8th House is one of the Dusthanas but may not be truly bad if occupied by a benefic Rashi and Graha. Even so, the Dasha by definition is not easy because it is far away from the personality of the person. Transformation does not occur in a commonplace way. From the Atmakaraka (AK) it holds a greater significance because the changes are not merely at the behavioural or the intellectual level but at the soul level. If the former Dasha occupies such a place and the latter is more conventionally placed from the Lagna Lord and/ or the AK, the changes in life will be welcome and there may be a feeling of having completed a rite of passage. The 6th House is far more difficult. It is a house of punishment and likely to be especially difficult from the AK, more so if malefic signs and planets, or those that are weak are involved.

The soul does not lend itself to empirical examination or scrutiny. Anything to do with the AK is therefore difficult to understand and come to terms with, till the time the AK becomes favourable; at that time the tide could be said to have turned. The 6th House from the AK shows the punishment coming at the soul level and is serious.

Now, assuming one is coming from such a Dasha into a different one, the Sandhi if vitiated by an adverse transit can make the wait longer. An anticipation of the glorious could be tempered with malefic-ruled experiences. At such times, doubt springs forth whether anything has meaning and thereby makes the experience worse. However, the play of Karma is not contingent in that manner on human frailty. As soon as matters improve in transit or the Antaradasha changes, putting an end to the Sandhi period, things will start happening accordingly.

Returning to the specific case of conjunctions which occur frequently, and it is equally commonplace to have Mahadashas of Grahas involved in Yuti, let us continue with the basic example construed in the other paper referred to, in order to familiarise oneself with real-life ramifications. It has been written there that the conjoined malefic whose Dasha it literally is, will insist on furnishing a context to His liking. Depending on the nature of the malefic, and even more importantly on the nature and strength of the conjoined benefic, this will manifest. For example, Rahu will give an elusive context or reference-frame and if the benefic is Budha say in Kanya Rashi/ Virgo, the experience is likely to be stellar. In this particular example, both Rahu and Budha are extremely strong. Let us take the 10th Bhava for these examples for the placement of the conjoined Grahas because the 10th Bhava is Swarga Bhava and the treatise could be more transparent for that reason for the sake of understanding.

In this example, Dhanusha (Dhanu) would be the Udaya Lagna and Rahu would act as the 3rd and 10th lord and Budha is the 7th and 10th lord in the 10th Bhava. One can easily say that this would be probably the best phase for working life and in life overall because the malefic planet Rahu is Himself very well-disposed. There will be intrigue in the work due to Rahu’s placement there but unconventional heights are promised due to Rahu. Here the foreign element in work in Rahu Mahadasha is very strongly indicated because Rahu rules foreigners and foreign lands, distant cultures and so on. More importantly, the results of Mercury will come because He is an exalted benefic in the 10th Bhava from the Lagna. As indicated, the visible facets of this Mahadasha should be judged from the AL. Such an individual is likely to have profound financial gains in the Dasha in an intellectual arena with domain expertise. Conflict in work cannot be avoided because Mercury does not like Rahu, despite both being Daitya Grahas anything leaning towards the deviant or the shocking is to be scrupulously avoided, due to the context being furnished by the actual or literal Dasha lord, Rahu. Given Sagittarius Lagna and the fact that Mercury is 10th lord let us assume that the individual works in finance or banking. Then the gains, acclaim, renown and financial apogee will be there to see, albeit in a foreign company, foreign establishment or any combination of these Karmic aspects.

Let us take one more malefic-benefic combination for the sake of discussion where the Dasha of the conjoined malefic comes while being placed in the 10th House. Saturn-Moon Yuti in the 10th Bhava is associated with the delayed fructification of some heartfelt desires. Understandably, the delay is caused by Shani, and the desires are ruled by Chandra. Saturn in the 10th House is difficult because His significations are strengthened and Saturn is the only planet who gives better results when weak, though He continues to be Himself. When the effects of the Moon come in Saturn Dasha, it will not only be a delayed fructification of cherished desires but a reprieve from life experiences of a certain kind especially if the Moon is strong, say in Cancer or exalted in Taurus. In Cancer, it is a peculiar situation because Saturn in Cancer in the 10th House Himself gives Rajayoga. This would be Tula Lagna where Chandra is the 10th lord in the 10th House and Shani is Yogakaraka. This forms a profound Rajayoga and the results of the Moon will come only after some jostling for space as with the Rahu-Mercury example above because the malefics in strength will not readily allow the benefics to take over

the results.

Chandra in the 10th Bhava generally speaking is a highly favourable placement because in Prithvi Loka, the Moon is King. All happiness and sorrow is felt in the mind ruled by the Moon. The 10th House in physiology is associated with the legs, and the Moon in strength will take the individual to the best hotels which are ruled by Moon in strength, as too by Venus, the Jala Tattwa Grahas. The Moon indicates the Queen and is one half of the royal couple. The 10th Bhava is Swarga and is also referred to by the grandiose name of ‘throne’. Naturally, the luminaries are considered excellently placed in the 10th House and the King, Surya, additionally has Digbala here with the blessings of Indra. Generally what is found in such a conjunction is that Saturn forces the individual to make aesthetic choices which belong more properly in the Victorian era. He will bring in an element of the rustic to the best destinations in the country or in the world. Furniture is ruled by Saturn and decor is ruled by the Moon. The presence of Saturn infuses the qualities of the ancient or vintage to all these. The only thing is that since it is effectively the Dasha of the benefic, everything will be top—notch and beautiful, commensurate with the strength of the benefic Moon.

As the contextual effect of the malefic wanes, the elements of the rustic or the vintage are gradually overwhelmed by lighter, more vibrant entities and Karmic structures ruled by the benefic but the presence of the malefic will remain in the nature of choices made (not the choices themselves), or the underlying substratum (not that which actually manifests as the main thing).

While the Atmakaraka (AK) was not included in the previous note, He must be included here because inevitably He will be one of the conjoined planets in a Mahadasha scenario in any number of horoscopes and His effect has to be studied for that reason. For ease of understanding, let us continue with the examples discussed and keep them at the back of the mind. To these conjunctions, let us add the AK with the caveat that He is neither the most benefic nor the most malefic in a three-planet conjunction and therefore at the level of Graha, is free to give His own results without being tainted by the conjunctions. The company we keep, and so it is with the Grahas.

The Atmakaraka is the king of the horoscope just as Moon is the king of experiences on planet Earth, in Jyotisha. The AK is carrying the maximum Karma from the previous lifetimes and is ruling Prarabdha in this lifetime. For this reason, the AK is very difficult during His Vimshottari Dasha because His agenda is to free the soul of accumulated Karmic dross while the mind simply wants to enjoy life as indicated by the exaltation of the elitist Chandra in Vrishabha Rashi. Since the Janma Vimshottari commences from the Nakshatra of the natal Moon it is mind-centric and the Dasha of the AK is therefore quite difficult for the mind to accept given the Karmic burden. Due to this overarching importance of the AK, this Graha should not be weak in the horoscope. Without studying the AK there is no Phalita Jyotisha because He rules over all the other Grahas in the charts. Conversely, while the AK should be reasonably well-placed and strong, He should not be too strong for then His actions can be extremely potent both in the conventionally negative (and in the conventionally positive). Conventionally, because it is all just Karma. When one part is over, the other begins. Usually the AK is adverse to start with and then turns positive when the negative Karma is burnt in some way or the other. However, sometimes, especially with benefic AK, He is extremely good and auspicious in the first part and then starts to deliver the results of past onerous Karma later once the good is exhausted. All the most major Rajayogas need the involvement of the AK, therefore He cannot simply be termed negative, for convenience. Both the Lagnesha and the AK also act as the 8th lord because they are inextricably linked with past Karma, the AK exponentially so.

With this glimpse into the working of the AK, His conjunction with the Dasha lord and the planet giving the results of the Dasha lord will be most telling if the age of maturity of the AK is in that Dasha. Then He will tend to take things over from there, depending on lordship and significations. Both the other Grahas, being conjoined the AK have no choice but to follow the orders of the King. If the AK has been adverse before maturity then this conspicuous Dasha stands to unfold in greater significance depending on the strength and dignity of the AK. Malefic planets have positive significations as well, or at least those which are not afflicting by definition. These might come to the fore by way of context. If the AK is a friend of the benefic planet then He may choose to work through the benefic or they may work together since in any case the conjoined planets have to follow orders. The point then is what is the will of the AK at that time because all of life will be defined by that from then on. If the AK is very strong (we are discussing Grahas in the 10th House) and has been testing throughout life, then in the Swarga some other kind of experiences may come forth. Some planets are akin to Devatas due to their strength. There can be some significant Karma to interpret in these situations. Strength or Bala is knowledge which is protected by the Gada of Hanuman and cannot be delved into beyond this point.

Jupiter transit shows auspiciousness and the blessings from the heavans. If there is affliction from Saturn in transit it needs to be offset by Guru’s grace. Protection is needed if there is affliction to the 10th Bhava from important references in the chart. Likewise, the transit of Rahu is that of material bounty if in the right places, such as trines from the AL. That of Saturn, conversely, can be testing for physical health. If Saturn is afflicting the Kendras from the AL, it can significantly dampen the spirits even in the kind of situations envisaged above.

Decisions which may not find easy takers or supporters at the time of Dasha Sandhi can in fact be taken, particularly if sought to be taken in any case if only there was other support or guarantee or protection, with these kind of Graha placements. Karma tests nevertheless, when does it not, but then if the Prarabdha is such that there is a strong planet in one of the aforesaid situations, then He will show Himself when the time is right. Prarabdha is revealed through experience and the knowledge of the Shastra is primarily an instrument of faith, belief and submission, not to be commanded but to be bowed before. Some sort of benediction in the wasteland can quench the thirst. Prerna is another concept. Grahas embodying past Karma inspire and motivate to do various types of new Karma apart from delivering the results of past Karma. There is a line of teaching that in Manushya Yoni we have a choice insofar as new actions go. There is another which deems that freewill from the Upachaya Bhavas since in the charts, is part of Prarabdha and therefore bounded rationality. It could be a mix of both but there is no doubt that the human race despite its many predicaments is special in most ways. Inspirations filtered into the present from the very distant pasts can be used to act with the very distant futures in mind, to say nothing of the more immediate ones.

Principles Governing the Mahadasha or Antaradasha of a Planet Involved in Conjunction or Yuti in Vedic Astrology

In Jyotisha, Dasha is very crucial in determining what is actually happening in life at a given time or during a span of time. If we think about it, this is the foremost practical consideration in the life of a human being who has the Karma to bow before the Shastra for insight.

When we consider Dasha, we must consider whether the lord of the Dasha, the Dashanatha, is alone or conjoined another Graha or Grahas. If there is a conjunction, and one proceeds to read the results only from the Dasha lord, literally, the understanding will go astray. The planet ruling the Mahadasha, and any others in the Bhava have to be arranged according to the level of beneficence or maleficence, and then the most benefic planet will give the results of the most malefic planet and vice versa; this will work in the case of multi-planet conjunctions starting from a three-planet conjunction. For example, if Mangala is joined Surya and Budha for Kanya Lagna then Budha Mahadasha,, which one might otherwise expect to be one of the finest periods in life, will be one of the most challenging because the results of Mars are likely to accrue. For one thing, Mangala is the most malefic planet in the conjunction and Budha is the most benefic. For another, Budha is the lord of Lagna and Mangala is the functional malefic ruling the 3rd and 8th Bhavas from the Lagna.

In the case of a two-planet conjunction, the Dasha of one planet can generally be expected to give the results of the other, subject to the exceptions and particular situations mentioned in this article, amongst any others. In a four planet conjunction, the most benefic will give the results of the most malefic and vice verse with the remaining two planets also exchanging results. The disposition of a Graha to give good or bad results has to be carefully examined, and the natural status is only one important parameter.

Other subtleties will be learnt only with experience. For instance, if a malefic planet is conjoined an exalted benefic, the Mahadasha of the malefic is taken over by the exalted benefic but the benefic refuses to exchange His own Antaradasha with the malefic planet whose Antaradasha starts the Mahadasha. Likewise, if a planet is very strong and His Dasha comes, then He may not allow another planet to give the results during His Dasha. Another higher facet to note is that Chandra rules all Antaradasha (of other planets) and if He is involved in a conjunction, He is unlikely to let another planet give results in His own Antaradasha.

Natural significations of the Grahas have, in any case, to be kept in mind at all times. Let us assume a malefic planet such as Shani is joined a benefic such as Budha and Shani Mahadasha arrives. Let us further assume that Budha is in strength and while not as auspicious as for the Kanya Lagna example, is well-disposed to give very good results in the nativity. Now, what will actually transpire is that all kind of information-related work, money-related positivity, rationality, learning, connecting, trade and commerce, intellectual property, writing, reading, mercurial changes in life will bring delight to the individual. Where one may have expected unending troubles, obstacles, illness and all sorts of Karmic trials, the opposite will manifest. Other details can be important. For example, for someone in banking, if such a Dasha comes and Mercury is involved with the work or income, or with the Artha Trikona in general, the Dasha could completely transform life.

However, subtleties are called that for a reason. During the first half of the Dasha, the malefic whose Dasha it actually is, will intrude by way of providing of context in terms of His natural significations and the delights and positives will manifest on a relatively lower plane than if the benefic was unconjoined and ruling the Mahadasha. If the individual has emerged from an adverse Dasha previously, he is unlikely to notice this unless it is brought to his attention. It is only during the second half of the Mahadasha of the malefic that the true gains will accrue, other factors being what they are.

The principle remains the same but will vary in its application depending on specific facts that obtain. For example, if the individual is a professional and the planet or planets in question are unambiguously connected to the realm of work, then all this will occur in the professional context. Chandra, for example, assuming a strong planet taking over the Mahadasha of the conjoined malefic, will give arbitration in the case of a person involved with disputes, or in the chart of an advocate. In the horoscope of an academic, it could show a strong and conspicuous connect with the students or with a community. In the chart of a banker, say in private banking or investment banking, the ideas and offers of the bank could appear very attractive to a client or investor. If connected with the foreign element, there is a strong likelihood of international commercial arbitrations manifesting either in the horoscope of high-ranking personnel in a company, or of another professional connected with the array of transactions in some way. Once again, since natural significations are not to be overlooked, a strong benefic will certainly yield its core ones, like the Moon in strength will always make the individual happy, Mercury will always give wit and a keenness for learning, Jupiter will give powerful ethics and wisdom which is to be had from emergent circumstances. Likewise, Venus will certainly nudge the person towards luxuries, designers and niche products.

Similarly, for a layperson, Chandra, for example, can indicate victory in a family dispute and in the case of an advocate can indicate taking up family disputes of a scale and stature corresponding to the strength of the benefic planet. Other benefics and their role can be similarly understood. There are other possibilities for which some free play in the construing joints, so to speak, is essential to accurately determine the impact in objective reality. These can depend entirely on the configurations in question.

It is a matter of pure destiny. If in a conjunction of the type discussed here, an individual commences the Dasha of a malefic, it is likely to be a very positive period though without this knowledge one would expect exactly the opposite. The Dasha of a benefic planet is to be feared in a conjunction because it will give the results of the malefic planet which is joined.

Axes can also be formed unobtrusively between Grahas and only the knowledge of the relevant Yoga can give a clear picture. Sometimes an individual is moving from one Graha in the axis to another and if one of these is involved in a conjunction with either positive or negative implications, the experience in either Dasha will be something to remember and will give life some unforgettable experiences of either nature, depending.

There are implications of this in crucial divisional charts but we can leave that facet for now.

One should always be aware that the core Karma will be judged from the placement of the Graha from Udaya Lagna and its manifestation will be seen from the Arudha Lagna. Neither can be studied in isolation. Without the Udaya Lagna, there can be no Arudha and without the Arudha, there is no way to truly learn how Karma associated with a Dasha is manifesting. If a positive placement is equally well-reflected from the Arudha Lagna, then the impact of good Karma in the Prarabdha is there to be seen.

Many learned people correctly observe that nobody is really bothered with the placement from the Lagna- how many people are close enough to an individual to truly know them. The placement from the Arudha Lagna yields a public image and perception and it is only in the manifest, visible world that things happen. Therefore, judging of a Mahadasha from the Arudha Lagna is vital. The Kendra Bhavas from the Arudha Lagna are most important and amongst them the 7th Bhava from the Arudha Lagna (AL) is most important. Important placements here can completely change life during the Mahadasha of the planet taking any conjunctions into account as aforesaid.

It is easy to see the crucial importance of conjunctions or Yogas in Vedic astrology especially when the Mahadasha of a planet in the Yoga comes. These principles are necessary to decipher the results of the Mahadasha and also the Antaradasha barring exceptions, some of which have been mentioned above. Understandably, one would not at this stage involve the Atmakaraka in the mix, because He rules supreme and interpretations involving the AK have to proceed differently.

Jupiter Transit in Cancer in October, 2025: Guru Gochara in Karka in Vedic Astrology

Jupiter became exalted in Cancer on October 18, 2025, in transit. The exaltation of Guru in Karka Rashi is always an unconditional blessing since the planet represents divinity in any horoscope. As Deva Guru, or the preceptor of the Devas, He gives the power of discrimination/ Viveka which is essential and crucial within the framework of merits and demerits in Karma.

Karka Rashi is the 4th House of the Kalapurusha, or the natural 4th Bhava. The 4th is a Kendra Bhava from the Lagna and is unreservedly auspicious like all other Kendras. One may even say that it is only the Kendra Bhavas that are truly auspicious for even Trikona Bhava are seeking blessings of the Devi. The fundamental trait of the 4th Bhava is the governance of Sukha or happiness and this comes from Punya or good deeds. This is also contiguous with the fact that Guru is the Karaka or significator for Purva Punya, the good or meritorious deeds of the past.

This can also be understood from the lordship of Karka Rashi; Chandra/ Moon is the ruler of Karka Rashi and rules the minds of human beings. All happiness and sorrow is felt in the mind. Guru is exalted here and therefore happiness will come from righteous conduct, Viveka and meritorious deeds of past and present. Karka Rashi may occupy any Bhava of the horoscope and therefore the result of this transit of Jupiter will depend on the Bhava placement from the Lagna and the Arudha Lagna (AL). Guru/ Jupiter illuminates and the natal occupation of Karka Rashi, if any, will further indicate that which is being illuminated.

Guru îs currently not under any affliction in transit by the Graha Drishti of any malefic planet. The transit is therefore capable of giving unhindered results. Guru is a slow-moving planet and therefore His results are felt in transit. The Rashis directly influenced by this Gochara of Guru in Vedic astrology/ Jyotisha are Karka, Vrishchika, and Meena with Makara also receiving the more general 7th House aspect.

Scorpio receives a planetary aspect capable of fortifying the future through correct thinking. Conversely, Guru being in the 9th Bhava from Scorpio will give Bhagya or fortune. For the Scorpio Arudha Lagna, the position is slightly more complex because Guru rules Satya and Arudha is a construct of Maya. The 9th Bhava from the Arudha Lagna is a Tamasic, fighting supporter for any individual. Guru does not initially work well with these obtuse significations and therefore some truth about the situation in the 9th Bhava from the AL will first emerge and only then will Jupiter support the individual.

Meena similarly benefits from the 9th House aspect from transit Jupiter bringing the fruits of good deeds done in the past to the Udaya Lagna. From Pisces/ Meena, Jupiter is transiting the 5th House and the period is a mixed bag of events due to the transit of Shani/ Saturn in the Lagna, which is His Marana Karaka Sthana position. Meena Lagna individuals with Shani in Lagna in the natal horoscope have Rajayoga but their health, decision-making, lifestyle choices, and thinking suffers. With Shani also transiting the Lagna, these indications may be heightened and may prevent the complete blessing of the Guru Gochara from coming through and being experienced. Prospects of mitigation may be tentatively ventured.

For Simha/ Leo, there could be some Shubha Yoga or auspicious beginnings because the 12th Bhava from another rules commencement, where something may be said to start. At the time of writing this note, Guru receives the sign aspect or Rashi Drishti of Rahu, and Mangala-Budha. There is an awareness of the diabolical, scheming and plotting and intrigue but both Guru and Rahu are free to work independently within this framework of shared knowledge. The other Rashi Drishti of Budha-Mangal is positive and helpful for creativity, the written word, learning, execution, initiative which are all blessed by the divine grace of the Preceptor.

Transit of Saturn in Pisces on March 29, 2025 and of Other Slow-Moving Planets in Vedic Astrology

Saturn has transited to Pisces on March 29, 2025 and with this Gochara comes an inevitable Karmic shift. It is the transit of the slower planets which is used the most in Vedic astrology and that of Shani tends to be the most deeply considered, and for good reason.

Saturn is the great malefic and indicates the results of the bad Karma previously done which are to be experienced in a given lifetime. If we quickly cast our mind back to the transit of Saturn in Aquarius/ Kumbha, the first thing to note is that it was the Gochara of Shani in His own Rashi. Despite that, the natives of Kumbha Rashi and Makara Rashi continued to feel the tests and trials which accrued from this Gochara.

This should dispel the notion that Shani is not adverse for His own signs, or for those where He is Yogakaraka. For this reason, when we find Shani or/ and Rahu merely lording the 2nd Bhava from the Upapada Lagna, it is reason enough to examine marriage deeply.

It has been seen that if Shani is blocking the Kendras in Gochara, most importantly from the Arudha Lagna, then that transit tends to be difficult; the Kendras from the Arudha Lagna represent the real pillars of life and if Shani is aspecting these and/ or is stationed in one of these in transit, then the characteristics of Karma associated with the Graha will be felt. Things could slow down, appear blocked and impeded. Similar results can be seen when Saturn transits the 10th Bhava from the Moon.

Financial and work-related matters are hit when Shani transits the 10th Bhava from Chandra or influences the 10th Bhava from the Arudha Lagna. Similarly, the other reference points referred to above, show the impact of the Saturn transit if assailed by placement or aspect.

The Gochara of the slow-moving planets, Guru, Shani, Rahu-Ketu is to be examined together to decipher the impact of transits themselves, and their influence on the main Dashas operating, for these latter can be modified by the transits, and usually are. There are many other facets such as the role of the 10th Bhava and the Trikona which also must be factored in for a fuller understanding.

Conversely, Dashas will also reveal how positive or negative the transits of the slow-moving planets would be since everything transpires in the context of the Dasha.

Guru Gochara, if positive, brings blessings even if the transit of Shani and the Nodes, or some of them is troublesome. Rahu and Ketu are opposites and influence life accordingly as diametrical opposites. It is also crucial to see where the individual is at in terms of his life-journey based on the identity and position of the Atmakaraka. This is in fact the most important because the Atmakaraka is King and decides everything.

The dual or mutable signs (Dwisvabhava Rashi) will feel the influence of Saturn throughout His journey in Pisces but Dhanusha/ Sagittarius will be strongly influenced because of Saturn's 10th Bhava Graha Drishti to this Rashi. Equally, for Moon or Arudha Lagna in Meena Rashi, there may be significant work-related or financial concerns during this period. The Arudha Lagna encompasses all aspects of manifest, visible life and Shani's influence here is particularly notable.

Saturn also aspects Taurus with His 3rd House aspect but the transit of Guru in Vrishabha offsets the difficulties, particularly after the Parivartana Yoga with Shukra comes to an end. Rahu-Ketu axis changes signs in the latter half of May, 2025 bringing yet another important facet into the reckoning.

For some, the transit of Rahu along with Shani in Meena can indicate the ending of the last remnants of some Karma. For others, Dosha could be precipitated where they are left struggling for insights, explanations and answers. For still others, the time before the Rahu transit, and that of conjunction with Shani could indicate saving graces where the Node is concealing, through His materialism, the real influence of Shani. After the change of signs, Rahu will be very powerful in Aquarius, Kumbha and implications of that transit depend entirely on the horoscope in question. Similarly, with Ketu.

Transits of Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu in 2025 in Vedic Astrology

Spring and summer of 2025 will be marked by notable shifts in transit of the slow-moving planets, Guru, Shani and Rahu-Ketu.

Important transits have the capacity to modify the results of the Dasha. In Vedic astrology/ Jyotisha, therefore, the two phenomena have to be examined together.

Jupiter/ Guru will move to Mithuna Rashi/ Gemini on May 14, 2025 and immediately thereafter the Nodes of the Moon, Rahu and Ketu also transit to Kumbha/ Aquarius and Simha/ Leo respectively. Shani/ Saturn will move to Meena Rashi/ Pisces on March 29, 2025.

Broadly speaking, in highly beneficial Dashas, positive transits lead to an icing on the cake situation, while negative transits can dampen the results or even negate them for a while. The effect can be construed accordingly for adverse Dashas, and so on.

It is well-known that Shani is the only Graha who gives added difficulties when He is strong. But a weak malefic is not to be desired because He becomes far more malefic. In other words, it is a devil and the deep blue sea scenario when it comes to dire malefics because this is their nature.

Saturn is currently transiting Kumbha Rashi/ Aquarius which is His Moolatrikona Rashi and the great malefic is very strong here. Only in case of the traditionally oriented in terms of lifestyle and personal philosophy, this position can offer a broad reprieve from the stresses and strains of this Gochara. Otherwise, Saturn in Aquarius has proved to be difficult for most people in different ways depending on the other facets operating in the horoscope. Kumbha Rashi is loaded with Karma in any case, in any horoscope, and depending on placements in Rashi and Navamsha, perspective has to be formed on the impact.

Shani in Kumbha Rashi is well-placed to dispense the results of negative Karma especially owing to the Graha Drishi/ planetary aspect to His sign of debility, Mesha/ Aries. Whichever Bhava falls in Aries in the horoscope, there is a chance of experiencing distress in some manner or form, particularly mental or emotional distress. Similarly, Saturn also aspects Vrishchika Rashi/ Scorpio with Graha Drishti leading to overwork or underwork. If this transit of Saturn coincides with Kantaka Shani from Lagna, Chandra or Arudha Lagna or even otherwise crucially impacts these reference points in some way, then the effects will be felt in a deeper way.

At the end of March, 2025, Shani moves to Meena Rashi thereby moving out of His own sign and diminishing in strength. Meena Rashi relates to spirituality and for those who aim to live an authentic life, the challenges may not be as great. Shani is only delivering the results of past Karma and if negative Karma has been burnt through experience or purified in other ways, then the suffering should be correspondingly lesser.

Guru does well in Jiva Rashi or mutable signs and His transit in Mithuna can enlarge the scope of our lives and understanding. Jupiter is expansive by nature and whatever matters are indicated by Mithuna stand to benefit from the journey of the greatest benefic in this sign. Depending on a host of factors including the strength of Guru and Budha in the horoscope and the dynamic factors operating, it may be that in some cases, information, learning, and intellectual growth will be dominant during this period. A lot depends on the Bhava which occupies Mithuna in the Rashi Chakra, both from the Udaya Lagna and the Arudha Lagna. In charts with the two benefics in strength and in auspicious Yogas, this could be a fruitful transit because the association of Jupiter and Mercury is considered very auspicious, like a Guru and Shishya sitting together.

The planetary aspects of Jupiter will fall on Tula Rashi/ Libra and Kumbha thereby delivering positive effects on these signs unless Guru is badly afflicted in the horoscope. The sign aspects of Jupiter go to the other three dual signs, Kanya/ Virgo, Dhanusha/ Sagittarius and Meena/ Pisces which gives a fated, and automatic blessing to these Rashis especially if Guru is strong.

Rahu and Ketu have not been well-placed in the current transit because Rahu is completely opposed to Guru who owns Meena Rashi. The transit of the North Node to Aquarius would place the malefic in great strength. Rahu, if well-placed from the Lagna and the Arudha Lagna can be beneficial in worldly matters. Ketu on the other hand is considered well-placed in Simha Rashi, particularly in Magha Nakshatra which He rules. The nodal axis is commonly understood as the Karmic axis and its movement is taken to directly denote shift in Karma.

Currently Mesha Rashi is also experiencing the dreaded 2nd Bhava aspect of Rahu and this will shift to Meena Rashi after Rahu transits to the preceding sign. Ketu, being headless, has no Graha Drishti since He has no eyes with which to see. Intuition in the positive, and mistakes in the negative, are the hallmark of the placement of Ketu anywhere. Perhaps being the most malefic planet for worldly matters, it is the negative indications which manifest more often than not. The positives of Ketu are reserved for a very select few.

One may then venture that the coming year portends a conspicuous change in Karmic energies by virtue of these notable transits of major planets. Needless to say, these will indicate a wide spectrum of changes for different individuals, depending on numerous matters of relevance but a change is certainly in the offing.

Illustrations of a Few Important Classical Principles in Vedic Astrology/ Jyotisha

The association of Rahu with Mangala/ Mars causes Kuja Stambhana. Mangala comes under a kind of spell where He becomes frozen and the Bhavas ruled by Mangala are destroyed by Rahu. This is a highly adverse Yoga/ combination which leads to sudden and undesirable developments- these may be violent and decisive in nature. Examples could include accidents, falls of a diabolical nature, exposure to fire in a traumatic fashion, sudden disaster, trouble with law enforcement, surgery in difficult circumstances and other very testing matters of this sort.

In a Meena Lagna chart (Example Chart I), the Yoga of Mangala and Rahu occurs in the Labha Sthana/ 11th Bhava from the Lagna. Mangala is exalted as the Yogakaraka Graha for the Lagna. There is no direct connection with the Lagna but the Lagnesha Guru is placed in the Navama Bhava from the Lagna in Vrishchika Rashi/ Scorpio ruled by Mangala. Mangala is therefore the dispositor of the Lagna lord. It is for this reason that the effects of the Kuja Stambhana were felt by the native.

Mangala rules properties and is the Naisargika Karaka/ significator for land and immovable properties. The native was convicted and imprisoned in a case of cheating involving immovable property. Rahu is well-known as ruling the significations of cheating and fraud. At the time this was happening, the spouse of the native was completely shattered. She gave the impression that she was unaware that these kind of activities were happening, though otherwise it is difficult to believe. But no evaluation of the veracity of this impression was carried out through the horoscope at the time, since there was no occasion for it.

The native has Shani in Upapada Lagna in Vrishabha Rashi/ Taurus in the 3rd Bhava from the Lagna. Shani in the Upapada Lagna is adverse, being opposed to all Arudha Padas and is in Marana Karaka Sthana from the Upapada. This brings suffocation to the marriage and can lead to other issues depending on the relevant placements in the horoscope. Inspite of assets being repossessed (vehicles etc.) as a consequence of other defaults on the part of the native, at the time the spouse was intent on being at the native's side, even when the native was at large, and had not been apprehended.

The 2nd lord from the Upapada (UL) is Budha/ Mercury and is placed in exaltation in the Vivaha Bhava/ 7th House from the Lagna and aspects the 2nd from the UL with Rashi Drishti. This confirms that the marital bond is very strong and will be very difficult to break. It appeared at the time that it was the shared destiny of the couple to face the results of the adverse events together. Budha is also the Badhakesha for the Lagna and in exaltation promises to act like a very strong Rahu having the potential to give some shocking events in marital life. The spouse was resident outside India when the native decided to get married, conforming the positive role of the Badhakesha at the time, giving marriage in this fashion.

Even otherwise, the Karma from the Satya Peetha, in the realm of marriage is interesting. The 6th lord Surya is placed in the 7th House with the Neecha/ debilitated Shukra/ Venus, who is the lord of the 3rd and 8th Bhavas from the Lagna.

The other principle we would like to highlight here is that of 'Vipareetam Ketouh'. Ketu is in the Arudha Lagna in this horoscope and the counting of the Bhavas from the Arudha Lagna is in reverse for that reason. By this reckoning, the UL is in the 3rd Bhava from the Arudha Lagna (AL). Shani/ Saturn being a strong malefic in the 3rd Bhava from the AL, gives another Vipareeta Raja Yoga at the time of marriage. Rahu aspects the UL with Graha Drishti and the Yoga of Mangala and Rahu aspects the UL with Rashi Drishti. Sometimes, the vehemence of the Yoga is mitigated owing to the strength of Shani, Shani being the Karaka of the 8th Bhava of longevity.

Here, Shani is in the Dushchikya Bhava from the Udaya Lagna and in the 3rd Bhava from the AL as well. Mangala is the Karaka of the 3rd Bhava from the Lagna and the Kuja Stambhana destroys the 3rd Bhava since Mars is finished off by Rahu. These indications do not augur well for the marriage and for the spouse. Mangala is also the 2nd and 9th lord from the Lagna. The wealth and liquidity of the native was destroyed at the time and it would not be a surprise if the father suffered adversity in his life as well for variety of reasons.

At this time, it appears improbable that the spouse did not know that the source of funds and the like was suspect because the union of the 6th and 8th lords forms Vipareeta Raja Yoga which is enjoyed by the spouse represented by the 7th lord Mercury, since Budha is joined the Yoga. Vipareeta Raja Yoga comes at some kind of price and in Kendra it can indicate the downfall of someone who favours the beneficiary of the Yoga. The spouse appears to have enjoyed the fruits of the Yoga but it was accompanied by the native being found guilty of having committed crimes, and imprisoned subsequently.

As stated, the Arudha Lagna is in the 5th Bhava from the Lagna in Karkata Rashi/ Cancer. The Yoga of Mangala and Rahu in the Arudha Saptama has completely blocked and destroyed the Arudha (image) of the person in society due to these developments.

In the other illustrative horoscope (Example Chart II), Meena Lagna once again rises in the Rashi Chakra. The 6th lord Surya is placed in the Lagna. The native has a receding hairline which is usually seen owing to the Agni of Surya in Lagna. When the 6th lord is in the Lagna, life is full of troubles, challenges, and a general atmosphere of strife prevails. The native may be sickly or prone to illnesses since the 6th lord rules these matters in life.

With the planet ruling enemies coming to the Lagna, the native becomes combative and often needlessly combative. Budha being the Badhakesha is Neecha in the Lagna- this is not a good combination. Guru is in Amala Yoga in the 10th Bhava and the AL is in Mithuna/ Gemini in the 4th Bhava. Foreign lands have been very conspicuous in the life of the native from an early age and he has been in India only sporadically. It is just as well because the Neecha Badhakesha will not function well in the country of birth and will pose any number of shocking challenges. The Yoga of the 7th lord in debility and the 6th lord has proved to be an impediment in marriage.

The UL is in the 3rd Bhava from the Lagna which has Yama Yoga of Shani and Mangala. This has prevented the UL from manifesting. The UL is also in the 12th Bhava from the AL indicating that the native rejects the idea of marriage in some way. Shukra, the lord of the UL is placed in the Maraka 2nd Bhava from the Lagna which is a highly adverse station since He is in the 8th from the Karaka Bhava. There is Parivartana Yoga between Shukra and Mangala and finally the results are as if Shukra is joined a Marana Karaka Sthana Shani in UL. In that case, Shukra will be in the 12th Bhava from the AL as well. This is a peculiar case where despite the Amala Yoga, work and career, even the societal image cannot be said to have fructified in any clear way. The reason is that Chandra is in Karkata Rashi in the 5th Bhava and the AL is in the 12th Bhava from Chandra, who is the Karaka of the AL and of all Arudha Padas. The Karaka rejects the Arudha Lagna. The AL and the Arudha Chakra have not fructified for that reason.

There are effects of Kuja Stambhana in this chart as well as Rahu aspects Mangala with Graha Drishti from the 11th Bhava from the Lagna. But this does not have anything to do with the Lagna, Instead, the Yoga impacts the UL. The Yoga is also broken due to the Parivartana Yoga discussed and Mangala comes to Mesha for that reason. Any run-ins with the police for miscellaneous reasons are also mitigated for this reason.

There are other possibilities and Karmic derivations possible. In another case (Example Chart III), the Yoga and the constituent Grahas do not directly influence the Lagna. However, Rahu has Purna Graha Drishti on the Lagna. While the usual effects of the Yoga have not come to bear on the Lagna, the native could not escape the effects completely. There was a health issue which was difficult to diagnose (Rahu) which was ultimately diagnosed and required surgery (Mangala) to treat and cure. This can be separately examined from the viewpoint of health. However, there is no doubt that the Yoga is formed in its fullest strength owing to the conjunction of Mangala and Rahu.

In this horoscope, Shani is in Vrishchika Rashi, lorded by Mangala, and Shani while in an inimical sign, is in the 6th Bhava from the Lagna having Amrita Drishti. This could have been a factor in mitigating the effects of the Yoga as far as the native is concerned, even though the connection of the Yoga with the Lagna is even otherwise only tenuous. However, the Yoga can operate fully if it associates with another person identifiable through the Rashi Chakra. There the Amrita Drishti of Shani may not help because Shani would not be in the 6th House when taken from the Bhava relevant to such a person. If the Yoga exists in the horoscope of such concerned person, then Karma is pointing in a certain direction, including through the tapestry of shared destinies.

There is Kuja Stambhana Yoga operating in transit at the time this paper is being written. Mangala is transiting Mesha Rashi in June, 2024. Rahu aspects Mangala with His Hangman's Noose from Meena Rashi and Shani adds fuel to this fire with His Graha Drishti to Mangala from Kumbha Rashi. The loss of lives at Rudraprayag and in the train accident in West Bengal are two examples of the working of this Yoga in transit. Thus, the Yoga can be devastating in the nativity especially if acting in respect to the native and when it is unmitigated by the lack of strength of Shani. Vipareeta Raja Yogas are also to be treated with caution as they often involve difficult Karmic energies.

Jupiter Transit in Taurus/ Guru Gochara in Vrishabha Rashi on May 1, 2024

Jupiter has moved into the benefic sign of Taurus on May 1, 2024. Guru is the representative of divinity in any horoscope, irrespective of the Lagna rising in the Rashi Chakra. Therefore, the Dasha and/or Gochara of the greatest benefic in the zodiac is very important to gauge the quality of time and experience. While Mesha Rashi was a friendly sign for Guru, it is a malefic sign, and Vrishabha while ruled by the inimical Shukra, the Rashi is benefic with a lot of Jala Tattwa despite being a Prithvi Tattwa Rashi.

The other point of significance is that Vrishabha is the treasure-trove of the Kalapurusha and Guru is Dhana Karaka. For those to whom the Graha is well-disposed during this Gochara, financial matters could be a primary area of improvement.

As always, the placement of the Graha from the Lagna and the Arudha Lagna is important, for judgment of both natal and transit results. So it is with this transit. Benefic planets, especially Guru, who gives unconditional blessings to human beings, should not be placed in any kind of strength in a Dusthana or Trika Bhavas from the Arudha Lagna, particularly the 3rd and 6th Houses therefrom. Likewise, from the Lagna, the benefic should not be placed in the Dusthana or the 3rd Bhava, the 6th and the 8th Bhavas amongst the Dusthanas being especially avoidable.

Guru being a slow-moving Graha shows long-standing transit results in the realm of the positive, just as Shani governs them in the realm of the conventional negative. Guru will aspect the other Prithvi Tattwa Rashis with Purna Graha Drishti/ full planetary aspect. Kanya/ Virgo and Makara/ Caapricorn, the sign of debilitation of the Graha will be illuminated by the Drishti of the great benefic. Likewise, the effects can be judged for the Chara Rashi/ movable sign except Mesha since this Rashi is juxtaposed.

The effects of the transit of Jupiter in Taurus will be more pronounced if the Graha rules the Mahadashha or Antaradasha in any applicable Dasha system. In some charts, due to past Karma Guru is not well-placed and is found in Marana Karaka Sthana or in great affliction due to other Doshas, particularly in Rashi and/or Navamsha. Guru/ Jiwa being a Sattwa Guna Graha sustains the human being on planet Earth along with other Sattwa Guna Grahas. Since nothing is absolute, in such a scenario, firstly caution and restraint are advised and otherwise steps may be taken if indications accrue which may point to the undesirable.

Otherwise, in favourable positions, the transit of Guru in Vrishabha augurs well, and may offer respite from the strained transit of the planets in recent times. There was the very adverse conjunction of Saturn and Mars operating in Kumbha Rashi which brought dangerous and difficult energies to life. Though the Yoga has dissipated with Mangala moving to Meena Rashi, it has not helped matters because there is the Mars-Rahu Yuri in Meena Rashi. Furthermore, Budha has been in Neecha Rashi joined this adverse combination. We see that merely owing to conjunction with Mars, Mercury suffers and here we have the conjunction with the warlike Yoga of Mangala and Rahu.

It would be useful to note that while in Mesha Rashi, Guru suffered the adverse Graha Drishti of both Rahu and Shani which was afflicting the planet and keeping the grace of thee Graha from coming through. Guru is now free of these malefic aspects in Taurus. It is always numerous factors that contribute to an outcome or a prediction. With several positives now associated with the transit of Jupiter in Taurus, an alleviating of the stresses of the past may be expected.

Interplay of the Static and the Dynamic in Vedic Astrology

Interpretation in all horoscopy must be an interplay of the static and the dynamic, for it to be a complete and meaningful study. For instance, if we are only confined to the natal Rashi Chakra, and the various Yogas therein, then we are unable to understand the functioning of time.

If, on the other hand, we only examine Dasha, and that too largely Vimshottari Dasha reckoned from the Janma Nakshatra, then we have lost context, and the exercise will lose all value for that reason.

We must be mindful of the fact that numerous Dashas have been taught in the classical literature for good reason. These serve their own specific purposes. Dasha does not, and cannot, mean only Vimshottari Dasha reckoned from the Janma Nakshatra. At the same time the Janma Vimshottari Dasha is universally applicable to all horoscopes in the Kaliyuga and gives excellent results. The conclusion is that the other Dashas are crucial because they reveal aspects of the horoscope, through the working of Kala, which a universal Dasha is not supposed to address.

When we examine the various charts in a horoscope, at any given point in time, we are usually focussed, and rightly so, on the areas that are most important in the understanding of the individual himself. But that does not mean that the important feature of well-being is overlooked; for, if the individual is not well, or suffering ill-health, or adversity in general then these facets must be factored in. Sometimes, in the natal horoscope, wellness is in jeopardy and combinations must be construed in that light, else the portrayal will be skewed. If the natal Moon, Lagna and Atmakaraka are afflicted, the unfolding of Rajayogas must be appreciated in accordance with other slants of reality.

When the Antaradasha is in Maraka Bhava to the Mahadasha, wellness must be examined because Kala is not favouring the individual in this respect. Health can be a problem. One has seen that even a Graha as auspicious as the Shubhapati, involved in such a situation, can test the individual in matters of health. Similar apprehensions must engage us when the Antaradasha is in Dusthana from the Mahadasha.

It is to be constantly remembered that the Atmakaraka is the real King ruling the life of an individual. Since His job is to cleanse the soul of the individual by burning the Karma, health issues can be precipitated at the soul level by the Atmakaraka, and by the influences on the Atmakaraka in the Navamsha Chakra (Karakamsha).

Mantra, and dominantly the Mrityunjaya Mantra is most important in such situations.

The converse is also true. When the Antaradasha is in Kendra or Kona from the Mahadasha then the anticipation is of positives and success. The charts have to be examined in this overarching light, when it comes to Dasha interpretation.

Conditional Dashas of Parashara have been discussed previously. There are numerous other variations of the Vimshottari Dasha which commence from points other than the Janma Nakshatra and the focus of these Dashas is on the Karmic reaction coming from the individual himself. The Janma Vimshottari will then indicate health and longevity (blood, Chandra) while the Vimshottari Dasha reckoned from these other places such as the 4^th Nakshatra from Chandra, 8^th Nakshatra from Chandra, 5^th Nakshatra from Chandra etc. show the actual Karma brought forth by Kala.

The entire theme of life can be dictated by the mere applicability of these other Dashas to the horoscope and interpretation must proceed on those lines.

Similarly, strong peculiarities of Karma indicated by placements of Grahas such as Marana Karaka Sthana become capable of leading to important conclusions and resultant advice.

Jupiter in Pisces: A Time For Blessings

The differences between the journey of Jupiter in Aquarius previously, and now in Pisces, are great. The lordship of Shani debilitates Guru in Makara Rashi/ Capricorn. Though the situation is different in Aquarius, the fact remains that the sign is ruled by Saturn, while Jupiter Himself rules Pisces.

The Tattwa or the foundational element of the two Rashis is also different. Kumbha Rashi/ Aquarius has Vayu Tattwa while Meena Rashi/ Pisces has Jala Tattwa. Vayu is about strength and movement while Jala is about receptivity and connection. We have often said that Kumbha Rashi is one of the more Karmically loaded signs having significant Karma to be experienced in the charts of people. Apart from this, Kumbha houses the 11th house of the natural zodiac which is also the Badhaka Rashi for the Kalapurusha or the Cosmic Man.

It is this latter reason which qualifies the placement of Jupiter in this sign because the Devaguru has to work hard to dispel the darkness caused by the natural Badhaka Rashi. In Meena Rashi, Guru has come home and He is comfortable. Guru represents the unconditional blessings for people in general and His comfort and ease is a great opportunity to benefit from His wisdom and blessings. Just as the Graha Drishti of Shani represents trials and challenges, that of Guru represents successes and blessings.

Guru aspects the 5th and 9th Bhavas from His Rashi with His special Graha Drishti while the 7th House is the common aspect given to all the Grahas except Ketu, who does not have a head and therefore cannot see (Drishti). The 5th Bhava is one of the Panaphara Bhava dealing with the future, future plans, progeny, blessings of the Mother Goddess and such matters. Guru’s special 5th Bhava aspect is imbued with all these characteristics. What is more, the 5th Bhava aspect of Guru falls on His sign of exaltation, Karkata/ Cancer where He delights.

The 9th Bhava from the Lagna relates to fortune, luck, religion, father and higher studies. The 9th house aspect of Guru to Vrishchika Rashi/ Scorpio will help in assimilating the experiences of the past related to this Rashi and the perspective granted by the Drishti of Guru brings fortune. If the position of Guru in transit in Meena Rashi at this time happens to be in an auspicious place from a significant reference point such as the Lagna or the Arudha Lagna, then the blessings can be directly felt in an auspicious Dasha.

In other cases, it will depend on the position occupied by Meena Rashi in the chart under traverse. That would indicate the nature and focus of the influence of Jupiter on the individual during this transit. Pisces is full of the knowledge of the Rishis and is particularly aligned to Para Vidya or metaphysical disciplines but in the Rashi Chakra covers any kind of significant intellectual activity including Apara Vidya. An upsurge in spiritual activity and its auspiciousness can be expected because Pisces is a part of the Moksha Trikona and any Agni Tattwa Rashi in the Lagna will experience this in a more conspicuous way. In any case, as we have said elsewhere, the distinction is not overly important during the present times because Shukra/ Venus is exalted in Pisces and is joined Guru.

Moving ahead with Vedic Astrology in February, 2023

At this time, people are looking to rebuild either their lives on the whole, or parts of it that matter most to them. In many regions, the threat of COVID-19 has transformed into some sort of alleviation. Those who have adhered closely to the higher realms of classical Jyotisha/ Vedic astrology in the past or are desirous of doing so now for good reason, would know to some extent that it is this art which has the potential to guide discerning human beings in this new world order in which there is much that is new, and a lot that is to be viewed with fresh eyes.

The two major outer planets, Guru/ Jupiter and Shani/ Saturn are both transiting in dignity. Guru is strongly placed in Meena Rashi/ Pisces, the own sign of the Devaguru and Shani has now moved to Kumbha Rashi/ Aquarius, initiating the Sade-Sati for Meena Rashi and commencing its culmination for Makara Rashi/ Capricorn.

Meena Rashi are blessed in that as their personal lives come under their own scrutiny and the pressures of Saturn, they have the sage guidance of Devaguru Brihaspati to inculcate in them a direct awareness of the value systems required to navigate potential crises. For the populace at large, the strength of Saturn, and that too in a Karmically loaded sign such as Aquarius is a pointer to caution and restraint because Shani is the only Graha/ planet who does not give positive results when He is strong. And yet a weak Shani does not help, since the life areas He rules will suffer due to the weakness of their ruler. So, when it comes to natural malefics, it is often a Hobson’s choice that people are faced with.

Saturn afflicts Mesha Rashi/ Aries with His Graha Drishti especially since Rahu is placed there. Natives of Aries Lagna or Rashi and others who for some reason need to pay attention to Aries in their horoscopes are advised to avail of necessary advice because storms are brewing and some would have already felt these in their lives. A lot has changed recently due to the transit of several planets in the zodiac in the reference frame of Vedic astrology. Jupiter has transited out of Aquarius, and is now in his own sign Pisces, where the greatest benefic in the zodiac is most comfortable. In the tumultuous times that have overwhelmed

the lives of people across the world over the past couple of years, the sage blessings of Jupiter are extremely welcome. He is the only planet who gives unconditionally in every horoscope irrespective of the role he plays functionally.

At the time of writing this paper, the other Guru, Venus, is also exalted in Pisces having joined Jupiter in Dwi-Guru Yoga. It is interesting that the planet ruling beauty, pleasure and worldly enjoyment finds sublimation in the sign of Jupiter. Mercury is excellently placed in a friendly sign Taurus ruled by His Guru Venus and therefore commerce, business, learning and career growth are all supported for those who are on the trajectory. The King of the zodiac, the Sun is exalted in Aries, albeit joined Rahu who tends to eclipse the Sun. Important political developments can be expected during this transit, and we have been seeing developments in both the domestic and international arena due to these reasons. Rahu-Ketu have also recently left the Taurus-Scorpio axis and retrograded to preceding signs.

All in all the general environment created by the placement of the planets as discussed is far more positive than we have seen in the time that has gone past. Notes on the Jupiter Transit in Vedic Aquarius

There are two entities to be focused on- Aquarius/ Kumbha Rashi and Jupiter/ Guru, And in that order. A significant event in Vedic astrology has occurred in 2021, in that Jupiter is now transiting the sign of Aquarius.

In that order, because the Rashi indicates the world of tangible realities or the field of play. It is the Rashi or the Vedic sign which holds all matter, all things.

Kumbha Rashi is a field of play that is heavily burdened with Karma. It is where the shock to the collective psyche resides, for this sign is the Badhaka Rashi/ obstruction to the Ascendant/ Lagna of the Kalapurusha, being the 11^th sign from the movable Mesha/ Aries.

Kumbha does not change itself for the Lagna rising; it retains its characteristics and gives them to the Bhava that resides there for any given nativity. It is for these reasons that the sojourn of Guru in this sign is considered so important. Kumbha is filled with darkness and with the intoxication of darkness. Researchers work through the darkness to find illumination here, and to try and at least see the nature of the liquid that fills the pitcher, the liquid the imbibing of which makes the distinction between day and night disappear. Guru, ruling the power of discrimination and the intelligence of the human being, goes into overdrive in this Vedic sign and He has to if we are to get past what we confront as a race.

COVID-19 infections have escalated exponentially in April, 2021 in India much like a cancer with the arrival of Jupiter in Aquarius but this is only to precipitate the true nature of the threat into full view so that human intelligence can truly understand what it confronts. Guru is in an alien place, but He is akin to being in exaltation in Aquarius because there is no other option.

He has to work as if exalted otherwise the darkness will take complete hold- it is much the same reason that basic Mantra are recited in the usual course of things, to protect the mind from that which assails. The cancer-like growth comes because of the stress to Jupiter through the lordship of Rahu of Aquarius, along with Saturn, and the significator of growth suddenly shows uncontrollable expansion of that which this sign throws up. That too in India; India, which is India only because the country bows to Guru and to the Sanatana Dharma that He teaches.

It is only now that the enormity of the situation will sink in and the best minds in the world will work fervently to try and realistically and specifically battle the virus and that which it brings with it. The virus has grown and mutated, doubly, triply because of the core proposition discussed above but it is precisely because of this growth that we will see the folly in discarding the wisdom of Guru, in throwing better sense to the winds, and instead do the basic thing, use the fundamental differentiating trait given to us as a people- work with and actually use our own minds.

Jupiter will retrograde back to Capricorn but as long as He is retrograde in that sign He will manifest as exalted even in His sign of debility.

In Aquarius though, He aspects Mithuna/ Gemini, giving us every opportunity to improve our mindset, our communications and to learn to avoid that which though heady, is actually visibly disastrous. He aspects Simha/ Leo, filling the world leaders and all the big men in powerful places with the right intelligence to see the world as one family (Vasudaiva Kutumbakam) and to act accordingly, and also Libra, telling us that the nature of evenings has changed for the foreseeable future, and though the Sun may set here in this sign, the ensuing darkness does not mean that all that we do in the name of pleasure is actually invisible. The hedonism of Tula/ Libra must be conditioned by the Graha Drishti of Guru and it should not be that only when places of pleasure are locked down, that we see the sense in restraint when we are being tested so severely.

Individual Karma in 2020 in the Times of a Global Pandemic: A Note in Vedic Astrology

The condition of the individual in the times of a global pandemic is a topic worthy of discussion. Individuals create the social fabric as themselves and as something larger than themselves through groups, institutions, movements, nations and so on. In the various systems and techniques that the ancient art of Vedic astrology affords us, both the global scenario and the realities that obtain in the life of an individual can be studied with precision.

Human birth necessarily implies a fundamental differentiation, seen through the Arudha Lagna and the various other Arudha Pada, as well as thee Bhavas reckoned from the Arudha Lagna. it is natural then to ponder the question, as people are naturally doing- ‘What does this pandemic mean for me?’

The manner in which the situation has unfolded over the past three months or so, reveals that the Jyotisha musings have interpreted core Karma correctly. The twin positives of Jupiter moving out of the clutches of the Nodes, while He was in Sagittarius (Dhanusha Rashi), to Capricorn (Makara Rashi), and the cessation of the Yama Yoga of Saturn and Mars in Capricorn have shown the way forward and kept mortality rates within check. As we had opined privately on numerous occasions, the retrogression of Guru in His sign of debilitation has provided breakthroughs in the development of vaccines, and the surprising discovery that dexamethasone, a well-known and readily available corticosteroid is extremely helpful, a lifesaver in severe cases of COVID-19.

In the aforesaid paper on social distancing, we have explored the prospects of a common denominator impacting individuals quite differently, owing to the Yogas and other features of the nativity in question. The objective reality of naïve realism provides a very different context and experience for specific persons. In one sense, the common denominator is a uniform reality impacting one and all, especially when demarcated regions such as cities, states and countries are taken as reference points. On the other hand, it is not at all plausible to presume that all citizens of a country etc. are going through identical experiences. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The truth is witnessed from the Karma in a given horoscope or chart. If it is a mundane or Prashna chart, it reveals realities of a particular kind. If it is a natal horoscope which is most crucial, then singly or conjoined with another interpretation, it is this study which can furnish insights about the question on everybody’s minds.

In addition, at least three major transits shall have a profound influence on matters. The Jupiter transit in Capricorn where the Deva Guru is in Neecha Rashi, Saturn transit in Capricorn, and the forthcoming transit of the Nodes to Taurus and Scorpio respectively in late September 2020.

We have already seen something which may appear extraordinary to many people. The malefic nature of a Graha does not change. A malefic transiting His own sign remains a malefic, which is something that has been felt as Shani transits Makara Rashi. No doubt, a planet transiting His own sign has its own special relevance but the unfolding of Karma in a given horoscope in light of Shani Gochara cannot at all be generalised and must be studied specifically. The transit of Rahu and Ketu, being that of the Karmic nodal axis is always influential in shifting the tenor of Karma that is experienced. The two shadow planets are amongst the most powerful forces in Vedic astrology.

As matters transform generally and externally, it is not hard to decipher that as always the conditions worldwide and circumscribed by national boundaries will impact people very differently. Adversities outside may not be felt to the same degree if one is experiencing largely positive Karma in the horoscope. Succumbing in some way or being otherwise put out is a possibility if the natal Karma at the time is onerous. Since the context is spiritual and not merely mathematical, the possibilities, probabilities and the permutations and combinations are to be understood only when an attempt is made to specifically examine these matters.

Social distancing and Vedic Astrology

The concept of social distancing, when examined through the principles of Vedic astrology, is best broken down first as an expression, into its

primary constituents- social and distancing.

Society, and all things social, amongst the Grahas, are governed by the planet Moon. Moon (Chandra) is the significator (Karaka) for society and our interaction with others in society.

Distancing then necessarily implies something which influences the Moon to alter His innate behaviour, as it manifests through its natural significations. Distancing is a splitting apart, a moving away, which is a quality inherently harsh in its nature. Togetherness and proximity, interaction and sharing are being changed to distancing and separation. This is the work of the natural malefics.

Interestingly, it is social distancing which is one of the most crucial strategies that are being used across the world, through lockdowns and other means, to save lives in the face of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19)- http://planetarytransformation.blogspot.com/2020/03/coronavirus-covid-19-and-vedic-astrology.html. The essential takeaway is that a malefic association with, and influence upon, the Moon is serving to deliver the most benefic outcome in severely oppressive circumstances. The suffering or distress caused by distancing or exclusion in society is obvious. It then follows that at least in certain situations, suffering and its significance and consequences, stand to be misconstrued, when we take the liberty of viewing them conventionally without delving deeper and examining them with an open mind.

A case in point, in classical Vedanga Jyotisha, is the Shani-Chandra Yoga, which is typically formed when Saturn conjoins Moon in the nativity in Vedic astrology; there are other ways in which the Yoga is formed, apart from conjunction (Yuti) but let us leave that part of it for now. When Saturn and Moon conjoin in the 4^th, 10^th or the 11^th Bhavas reckoned from the Ascendant rising (Udaya Lagna) in the Rashi chart, a Rajayoga is formed.

A moment’s reflection will reveal that the 4^th House of the natural zodiac is ruled by the Moon, and the natural 10^th and 11^th Houses are ruled by Saturn.

The Moon when unafflicted is a benefic planet and the singular most important force in the natal horoscope for any individual for it is in the mind signified by this planet that all experiences are felt. The Moon is truly the ruler of the horoscope when we speak of life experiences of human beings on planet Earth.

When the Moon is associated with Saturn, a benefic planet is being inextricably linked with a dire malefic. Shani is the planet who signifies our bad Karma and when Shani has no punishment to deliver, there is really nothing left to suffer in a given lifetime. Saturn (Shani) is the great malefic. The association of these two planets brings suffering, melancholy and depression to the mind. The mind is constantly assailed by these significations of Shani. It is as if a constant Sade-Sati, the dreaded seven-and-a-half years’ transit of Shani, is operating in the horoscope throughout life.

The Yoga can be one of the most significant in the horoscope because it directly influences the planet virtually running the show in life. If the mind is too heavily afflicted then the other positive Yogas may not fully manifest because the driving force itself is not functioning properly. How then can such an oppressive combination lead to Rajayoga?

The answer is contained in this Note in its basic appraisal of the concept of social distancing. Sometimes what one feels is assailing and tormenting the experience of life, is in fact the path to safety, success and fulfilment. In certain cases, these are but two sides of the same coin. Saturn signifies delays and obstacles and so the Shani-Chandra Yoga in these specific locations will give Rajayoga belatedly after initial trials and suffering are fully experienced, as destined.

There are factors in advanced classical Jyotisha which can illustrate whether a Yoga will function fully or not. In fact, the Moon Himself confirms the happening of a Yoga; however, since in this case the Moon is a constituent of the Yoga, He cannot confirm or refrain from confirming it. There are some other Yogas involving Carakarakas for instance that can show the likelihood of a Yoga functioning. However, with the Shani-Chandra Yoga, these are only ancillary facets. This Yoga will function on its own.

Saturn, in these different locations, works with and upon the Moon to bring success in a specially cherished realm of goals and desires. These cherished goals and desire are precipitated by the Moon and the mind cherishes them. When Saturn has worked on the mind to the extent destined, the Rajayoga manifests. It manifests differently based on the significations of the three Bhavas but that discussion can be deferred for now, and the differences can perhaps be inferred after some suitable thought.

One thing is certain. The mark of Saturn will be conspicuous in these lives and in the attainment. The malefic then, and its affliction of a benefic planet, leads to great success in severe circumstances or after such events etc. have been experienced by the person. It is not farfetched to assume that the exclusion and the intense suffering are preconditions for certain kinds of genius or special achievement to follow. These shape the mind internally, and the flux of life experiences externally, which constitute essential parts of the Rajayoga.

The suffering, therefore, is nothing but a blessing in disguise in certain cases. Apart from the fact that all that we experience, including at the hands of others, is largely our own Karma reflected, it is also at times a gateway to all things good. Distancing and solitude, alienation and dissociation, sometimes even from one’s own self, can be catalysts for attaining the pinnacle of life.

Is it possible to extend this principle to any affliction, at least in theory, especially of the Moon, or other planets and Karakas that define the oftentimes elusive self; there is food for thought there. There is nothing in suffering which is to be inherently celebrated or welcomed. Suffering is a malefic experience. But what we have seen today is that like life, suffering and distress can be textured and mysterious, deserving our sincere attention.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Vedic Astrology

When we seek to evaluate the threat of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) with Vedic astrology, we find that root in the affliction of Jupiter in transit. Jupiter indicates human beings, the most intelligent in all creation. This is for the reason that Jupiter (Guru) is the Karaka for Dhi Shakti, the power of discrimination, which is what sets human beings apart.

Jupiter is aspected by exalted Rahu, and conjoined the combination of Mars and Ketu in Sagittarius. This is Pishacha Yoga aspected by Rahu. There is affliction of Jupiter by three dire malefics. Rahu and Mars are bitterly opposed to each other and worsen the affliction.

It appears plausible to hold that the virus is controlled by the Nodes because at the heart of its spread is the notion of foreign countries. As far as India is concerned, Wuhan, China is a foreign land where the virus originated. The threat at its core is linked with foreign travel. The other planets indicate subsidiary factors such as the dual signs indicating human beings, and therefore the necessity of avoiding large scale human contact.

It is worthwhile to note that all dual signs aspect each other with Rashi Drishti (sign aspect).

It is true that Jupiter’s next transit is going to be in its sign of debilitation, Makara or Capricorn which is a malefic sign ruled by Saturn. But there is a huge improvement despite this major infirmity: Jupiter would be out of the clutches of the Nodes, who, we have surmised are at the heart of the problem.

The debility of Jupiter would be cancelled both by Mars, who transits Capricorn after Sagittarius, and Saturn who is the lord of Capricorn. No doubt, debilitated Jupiter will be conjoined Mars and Saturn and the mortality rate may be different from what we have seen thus far. The Jiva/ human being has fallen in debility. But there is no Nodal influence.

Mars is the strength of the Kalapurusha, and Saturn in its own sign indicates that the disease is understood. There is a breakthrough (Capricorn is the natural 10^th House) which restores the strength of the Kalpurusha, and therefore of the human being. Mars is exalted and is lifting Jupiter out of its debility. The process is far from easy and will take its toll but the release from the Nodes is bound to have a positive impact.

Since Rahu is in Gemini (an Air sign), He is propagating the notion that airlines will be bankrupt soon. He has taken control of the Vayu Tattwa and has caught Jupiter in it.
We also cannot overlook the fact that COVID-19 afflicts the respiratory system. All respiratory problems can be traced back to Rahu, His comeuppance at being beheaded and not being able to breathe at all.

Once Rahu has nobody to deceive, He himself may reveal the cure (research).

Jupiter Transit in Sagittarius in Vedic Astrology: A Tapestry of Karmic Implications

The transit of Jupiter, the greatest benefic planet in Vedic astrology, is important for various reasons. The thrust of these is that Jupiter represents the grace of divinity. So, no matter what else is happening in life, the impact of Jupiter is crucial in our lives. Even in stressed circumstances, the benign grace of Jupiter can bring crucial insights and help an individual through his problems. Perspective and faith can be life-transforming, and these come from the planet Jupiter.

Simply put, Jupiter is the representative of God in the Vedic horoscope. There are unconditional blessings from this planet for all of us and the reason is that He is the significator of Poorva Punya, good actions performed in past lives. The better those actions are, the more positive Jupiter is in the horoscope. Of course, if Karmas were beyond reproach, rebirth would not have occurred and the soul would have found release but with that limitation, Jupiter blesses us to the extent possible, given the contours of the charts that comprise a given horoscope.

When Jupiter (Guru) is in His own sign Sagittarius in a nativity where Jupiter is a functional benefic, irrespective of what else may be happening to the planet by way of conjunctions and aspects or in other ways, the placement can be very significant in life, especially if the native were to experience the Dasha of Guru at an opportune time. This will happen even when Jupiter is not a functional benefic for the Rashi chart, for when can divinity be detrimental for the individual. In these latter cases, it will be a matter of perspective in most cases unless the Deva Guru is not happy with the individual.

Jupiter is transiting to Sagittarius, finally on November 5, 2019. Finally, because He enters the sign and then retrogrades back into Scorpio, where He is in exchange with Ketu, who is co-lord of the sign Scorpio. The exchange is also significant and can work as Parampara Yoga where elevated insights from esoteric traditions can uplift life through heightened awareness and knowledge. Generally, however, the combination is a testing one. The conventional blessings of Jupiter appear to dry up owing to the effect of the Parivartana Yoga with Ketu. No doubt, Jupiter will act from Sagittarius but only in this scenario, till He is himself in His own/ Moolatrikona Rashi.

During this time of Jupiter’s journey in Scorpio and the exchange with Ketu, the effects can be properly studied only when it is simultaneously recognized that Ketu is exalted in the sign Sagittarius. Exalted Ketu highlights its own spiritual goals to the utmost and is likely to denude material prospects which it touches, in equal measure. This makes the exchange between the two planets even more conspicuous.

Dhanusha Rashi/ Sagittarius, even though ruled by the planet Jupiter, is a fiery/ Agni Tattwa Rashi and is a part of the Dharma Trikona. It is associated with a dynamic intellectualism extending to many areas in life. It is also important to know that the sign also indicates the battlefield and so various war-like situations can manifest. The difference is, that with Jupiter in the sign, the parties guided by correct thinking are on a strong footing and fight for a just cause. Jupiter is not alone in the sign and this will modify results accordingly. But the positives of Jupiter in its own sign are noteworthy.

We have mentioned this before and are stating this again- there is Gandanta between Scorpio and Sagittarius and the transit of Jupiter through this region, the last degree of Scorpio and the first degree of Sagittarius is vulnerable. Though the transit under scrutiny is that of Jupiter we cannot but refer to the fact that two malefic planets are transiting the Lagna in the form of Saturn and Ketu. It is known and understood that the Lagna is the Marana Karaka Sthana position for Shani. For those with vulnerable health prospects, Shani, the Naisargika Karaka for disease and ill-health transiting the Lagna, the latter being the place of health and vitality, is adverse. Conjunction with Ketu can only worsen the prospects in this area of life and diagnosis of ailments may be erroneous or delayed.

Jupiter will help, and help greatly, through one’s own insights and thinking since the Lagna denotes the self of the individual. Furthermore, Jupiter is the Karaka of Dhi-Shakti, the power of discrimination, otherwise known as Viveka. Guru also has Digbala, directional strength, in the Lagna and directs the intelligence favourably. This is a great positive and can help tide over numerous challenges in life.

For Dhanusha Lagna this is more a time for internal reorientation and seeking of blessings from the Goddess. Guru aspects the trines from the Dhanusha Lagna and blesses the 5^thand 9^thHouses. Children, future plans, higher education, father, fortunes and so on are favourably impacted. It is not advised that the individual should seek out serious battle, though this may manifest, since Jupiter and Saturn are conjoined, and this does not bode well for the individual and the adversary in this scenario. Let this be a time, instead, for new beginnings for these can truly be made during this transit.

Let the new beginnings be auspicious and not forced, especially owing to misadventures in personal life. The 7^thHouse of marriage also bears the brunt of the aspect of two malefics during this time and obviously it is the aspect of Guru which can save the day for the natives of this Lagna. The spiritual thrust will come, but with the insights from Guru (Sanatana Dharma, esoteric arts of India such as Jyotisha, Guru, sage thinking, phlegmatic mindset and adherence to Vedic wisdom) it should come preferably without the severe tests of the Guru-Ketu conjunction. Avoid the temptation of using wisdom superficially and only for the sake of appearances because this happens with the Saturn-Ketu conjunction. The way of Jupiter is better.

For the Dhanusha Arudha Lagna, the situation is a more testing one. Financially and socially, at the manifest level, the Sagittarius Arudha Lagna is confronted with tests. Saturn in the Arudha Lagna is onerous and so is Ketu. Saturn is not good for the Arudha Pada and Ketu, being the significator for Moksha is not suited for a strong indicator of reality in the world of Maya. Jupiter Himself is not ideal in the Arudha Lagna though He will definitely promote a good perception amongst those who interact with the Dhanusha Arudha Lagna individual. The Arudha Lagna has to do with creating material reality and Jupiter is not ideal because He is fundamentally disinterested in these matters.

For Aries Lagna, the other Lagna in the Dharma Trikona of the Kalapurusha, the transit is in the 9^thHouse from the Lagna. Just as generally, the widely differing nature of the three planets in Dhanusha gives mixed results, as it must, the implications for Dharma and Bhagya are also similarly muddled for Mesha Lagna people. While Jupiter suggests visits to temples and taking recourse in religion, Saturn works exactly to the opposite effect. In the natal horoscope, Shani in the 9^thHouse portends denuding of belief in God and an agnostic or outright atheistic mindset as age progresses. The 9^thHouse is associated with advanced age. Exalted Ketu in the 9^thHouse will promote spirituality but may do so harshly for a variety of reasons, including those enumerated above. Implications for the father will depend on the natal condition of the 9^thHouse and related factors, as well as on the Karma contained in the Dwadashamsha Chakra pertaining to the parents.

Conventional luck and fortune are being subjected to stresses but that is largely due to the malefics stationed in the 9^thHouse. Jupiter will help and to improve matters it is suggested that the individual adhere to the path of the benefic planet. Mesha Lagna benefits with the Graha Drishti of Guru to the Lagna, which imbues the self with positive energies, influencing personal health favourably. The same influence is exerted on the 5^thHouse itself which is a positive influence for planning and children.

The Mesha Arudha Lagna is again confronted with mixed possibilities. Here, ironically Saturn and Ketu are most welcome since they aid the individual in his efforts to succeed in the material realm, but Jupiter being the significator for truth balks at some of the Maya. It takes time for Jupiter to support the individual in the 9^thHouse from the Arudha Lagna, the time needed to assimilate the truth, which is not an easy process.

For the remaining Lagna in the Dharma Trikona, the Agni Tattwa Leo Lagna, the association of Jupiter, Saturn and Ketu in Sagittarius occurs in the 5^thBhava from the Lagna. For Leo, this sign represents children and future planning, and the texture of consciousness, the Chitta. Jupiter coming to the trines to the Lagna augurs well for the advent of blessings, which are needed to counter the adversity of the malefics in the 5^thHouse. For these individuals, if the 5^thHouse is otherwise fortified in the natal chart, then the entry of Jupiter will elevate matters. The 5^thHouse is a place for receiving blessings with folded hands, and this is especially so when there are malefics transiting the 5^thHouse; otherwise, malefics in trines are a recipe for depression, especially when there are two or more of these. This is especially true for the natal horoscope for transits by definition are transient and come and go.

Jupiter in the 5^thHouse in Dhanusha Rashi can bring about an epiphany. This can be religious, philosophical or anything partaking of intellectualism in its many varieties. The beneficial energies of the planet pervade the mind and lead to a consciousness which is prepared for this. Epiphanies occur when the groundwork required for these is already well in place. People who have been travelling their lives in congruence with this prospect will find that this transit supports the manifestation.

With its 5^thHouse Graha Drishti going to the Bhagya Sthana from the Lagna, Guru will inspire good fortune and correct ways of thinking about the world. The 9^thHouse aspect of Jupiter also goes to the Lagna Bhava and improves the understanding of the health and the decisions that are made by the self. New beginnings can inspire the future.

Affections and marriage are other areas which can be favourably influenced during this transit, especially if the natal horoscope promises this. This is from another level of these studies but can be made a note of, given the intricate demands of the two Gurus in Vedic astrology in certain cases.

Broadly speaking, the 5^thHouse is a Lakshmi Sthana and the axis which is made with the 11^thHouse relates to financial well-being. This transit of Jupiter could impact these matters favourably for Leo Lagna.

This is highly pronounced for individuals with Leo Arudha Lagna because Jupiter is transiting the 5^thHouse from the Arudha Lagna. in horoscopes with positive wealth potential, this transit can be quite conducive to gains.

For Taurus Lagna, it is the 8^thHouse which is populated by these three planets. The 8^thHouse, though having the propensity to be neutral, is one of the evil houses of the horoscopes, being a Dusthana. Saturn alone here can sometimes be a positive placement, but for Taurus Lagna, as the 9^thand 10^thlord, placed in the 8^thHouse, this is not really applicable. With Ketu, the 8^thHouse shows affliction. The transit of Jupiter through this 8^thhouse from the Lagna is that of the 8^thlord in the 8^thhouse. Any chronic illnesses that have come to the fore will be helped by the presence of Jupiter in the sign. Ketu may be interfering with the correct and timely diagnosis of these ailments and this problem will be assuaged by the arrival of Jupiter, even if in due course.

The 8^thHouse is associated with deep personal transformations. These are inscrutable in nature till the point they are either fully or substantially assimilated. The 8^thHouse from the Arudha Lagna deals with loans for business and in some cases this funding can be quite useful. This is an evaluation for a situation where Jupiter alone tenants the sign. Here owing to the affliction, and resultant stresses associated with borrowings, Jupiter can ease the problems and show the best way ahead in this scenario. The main proposition that aids understanding here is that the 8^thhouse holds the sustenance for matters that reside in the 7^thhouse. The 7^thhouse also houses business activities and therefore the transit in the 8^thhouse for Taurus Arudha Lagna is relevant.

Virgo Lagna is experiencing turmoil at home with malefics transiting the 4^thhouse. Jupiter rules the 4^thHouse for this Ascendant and His entry into the sign of Sagittarius can at the very least bring true perspective and understanding of the issues that have precipitated the turmoil in the first place. The natal condition of the 4^thhouse in charts with this Lagna will determine the true impact of the transit. If the 4^thhouse is severely damaged in the natal horoscope, then Jupiter’s transit will only reveal the truth of that affliction for Guru is about Satya. Breach of Sattwa Guna or correct values and action will be precipitated into view. If, on the other hand, the 4^thhouse is not afflicted in the natal horoscope then the hopscotch in the 4^thhouse will work differently.

If the 4^thhouse is not afflicted, then the malefics indicate transient heartache which will be mollified by the presence of Jupiter. Jupiter is well-placed in the 4^thhouse and will bring proper understanding to the heart and home. Again, the Tattwa in the Lagna indicates the emphasis on the Moksha Trikona indicating a fundamentally spiritual influence of the Jupiter transit. This manifests in the aspects to the 8^thand 12^thHouses. Whatever is in the 4^thhouse in the natal horoscope, will find play owing to Guru, who makes things ‘succeed’, or in this context bring them to fruition.

For all Lagna, if a Nodal flip is happening, in that one Node of the Moon is transiting over another in the natal horoscope then the other side of the story will manifest. For example, if Ketu currently in the 4^thHouse for Virgo is transiting over natal Rahu in the 4^thHouse or another Yoga involving the North Node then the other side of what Rahu precipitated will come through. This can be a difficult experience and since the Nodes are Karmic, life can turn around, as if over an axis.

For the Virgo Arudha Lagna individual also, the transit is not very good. What is required in the sign of Sagittarius for this Lagna is creation and what is happening is destruction. Immovable property, home and vehicles need to be watched over carefully. Jupiter helps immensely, trying to stem the flow as it were.

Personal life and intimate choices have, for some Capricorn Lagna people, reached the nadir of self-negation with the transit of Saturn and Ketu in Sagittarius. With the entry of Jupiter in the sign, some sanity will prevail and the feet of the individual will move in the right direction. Personal life can prove to be a real testing stone and the way it has been dealt with in the past will dictate the real impact of the current transits. We need to be aware that just as the 12^thHouse is indicative of the pleasures of the bed, it is also the Moksha Bhava. In either event, the self is effaced in some manner. Since the 12^thHouse is also the Ashram of the Guru, they have started meditation practices or attending lectures at the premises of a spiritual figure.

The Moksha Trikona is again influenced owing to the Prithwi Tattwa in the Lagna. The 4^th, 8^thand 12^thHouses receive the aspect or conjunction of the transit Guru. If anyone is trying to throw dust into the eyes of another with this Lagna through false spirituality or fake austerities, they will be taken to task very harshly. Shani-Ketu sometimes cause this, and because of the involvement of Guru, the benefits associated with, and emanating from the planet Jupiter can vanish. Keep Jupiter truly in your lives.

The Capricorn Arudha Lagna suffers massive expenditure during this time. For those with tax related problems, this transit of the malefics is traumatic. Shani is the Naisargika Karaka for forced exactions of a monetary nature and His presence in the 12^thBhava from the Arudha Lagna with Ketu (mistakes, error) is a clear pointer to this. If these planets are transiting over an afflicted 12^thHouse from the Arudha Lagna, then utmost attention will be required to tide over these problems. With Jupiter in the 12^thHouse, if the natal Yogas point to this outcome, and only then, the accumulated wealth (treasure) runs the risk of being taken away.

Gemini Lagna is aided by the transit of Jupiter in the 7^thHouse. The attitude to marriage and partnerships was assailed by the transit of Saturn and Ketu and helped only by the Parivartana Yoga between Ketu and Guru. Now, with the arrival of Jupiter in the sign, marital and business matters will receive correct direction. Desires will have some Sattwa Guna because Jupiter aspects the 11^thand 3^rdHouses with Graha Drishti. The Lagna also receives the aspect of Guru which brings heightened sense of propriety and rationale to the intelligence and to the decision making. But still three is a crowd and people with this Lagna have to direct their state of being in line with the teachings of the Deva Guru. There are bound to be some conventionally challenging experiences, and it is better if one is not directly a party to these, say for example in cases where the Lagnesha is in the 7^thHouse in the natal horoscope and these planets are transiting over the functional intelligence.

The presence of Jupiter helps the career as well because the 7^thHouse from the Lagna is also the 10^thfrom the 10^thHouse and supports the 10^thHouse.

The Mithuna Arudha Lagna is blocked at the present time and if the blockage is in evidence in the natal horoscope then servants, spiritual figures, lawyers, finance professionals and anybody indicated by Saturn, Ketu and Jupiter will tend to prevent the social and financial personality from exerting itself. With Jupiter people it will be possible to arrive at a settlement to improve this situation.

Libra Lagna has Guru transiting the Marana Karaka Sthana position in the 3^rdHouse with Saturn and Ketu bringing ordinary ideas with which to project one’s personality. The 3^rdHouse position of Jupiter runs the risk of denuding the planet of His benefic grace for the nativity in question. From this weakened position, Jupiter cannot be expected to transmit any significant blessings to the 7^thHouse which He aspects. The 9^thHouse and the 11^thHouse are likewise influenced beneficially only in a marginal sense. The overall decision-making and conduct is to be watched carefully and advice sought when in doubt, especially if the natal horoscope does not indicate an outright positive time.

Tula Arudha Lagna is not at all helped by the 3^rdHouse transit of Jupiter and in fact Saturn and Ketu may help in some mundane pursuits instead. It is recommended that people with these combinations should seek advice at the first sign of adversity during this transit.

For the final Ascendant in the Vayu Tattwa Rashi, Aquariushas Guru transiting the 11^thHouse and is best amongst the lot. From this location, not only are the gains (Labha) fortified but the aspect to the 3^rdHouse mitigates needless aggression and abrasive thinking. The 7^thHouse in Leo is a Mitra Rashi for Guru and is positively aided in the realm of marriage and partnerships. For the individuals with the Arudha Lagna in Kumbha Rashi, this is a fine transit and can bring windfall in finances and wealth. The only advice would be to choose the source of income wisely. Keep to the path of Jupiter and this transit promises to be an excellent one.

For the Jala Tattwa Lagna, Cancer Lagna is facing a time of precipitation of internal weaknesses and Jupiter’s transit is not good overall save for the purpose of improving relations with in inimical persons. The transit is through the 6^thHouse of Roga, Rina, Ripu where an outright benefic such as Guru does not know what to do. The malefics perform better but only because they give the wherewithal to fight adversity. The 6^thHouse ceases to be an Upachaya Bhava of growth during such a Gochara and becomes a Dusthana. The positives of Guru are lost to a degree. Professionally though, the planet will try to help with His aspect to the Karma Sthana and the 2^ndHouse, all part of the Artha Trikona.

The 6^thHouse is 12^thfrom the 7^thand can dissipate or stress the marital bond if this is foretold in the natal horoscope.

The individuals with the Arudha Lagna in Karkata Rashi find it a very difficult transit because Jupiter is in a sense renounced for the time being and very strongly at that because Guru is in His own Rashi. It is only Saturn and Ketu who keep the person engrossed in the rough and tumble of life. Wealth and finances are at risk if the danger is evident in the natal horoscope.

Scorpio Lagna again has a chance to enjoy the sustenance of the Dhana Bhava, which applies with greater vigour to the individuals with the Arudha Lagna in this Rashi. Jupiter protects finances vigorously which may have been stressed by Saturn and Ketu in transit especially if the individual suffers adverse Dashas in the nativity. But you must do this yourself because Guru is the Lagnesha. Self-effort brings a new dawn and gives growth in finances from the 2^ndHouse and measurable growth generally from the 6^thHouse. For this Arudha Lagna, the effects are the same but always shining bright with their visibility. The 10^thHouse is the Swarga or the zenith of the horoscope and the individual shines with the auspicious light of the Deva Guru during the Gochara. Do not succumb to the mistakes of Ketu or the options indicates by Saturn. Again, keep to Jupiter else the cleansing of the Parampara Yoga cannot be more severe than for the sign of the Rishis.

Transit of Rahu-Ketu to Gemini & Sagittarius on March 7, 2019 in Vedic Astrology

Exaltation and debility of planets:

Exaltation and debilitation are special stations of planets and when we speak of the Nodes of the Moon, Rahu and Ketu, this attains even greater significance simply because the Nodes are unique among the planets by virtue of their significations which influence humanity to such a significant degree.

An exalted planet is at the apogee of its prowess and a debilitated one is at its lowest ebb. An exalted planet is strong and as a rule of thumb, strength is to be preferred over weakness, with notable exceptions, including those based on the station of planets in given nativities. A debilitated planet is considered fallen and is a bad fish in the pond, capable of dirtying the entire thing.

Rahu is exalted in the sign of Gemini, while Ketu is exalted in the sign of Sagittarius. Since the Nodes of the Moon are always retrograde, they shall transit to the preceding signs from their current stations, which are Cancer and Capricorn respectively. In this manner, we see that the Nodes are now going to be exalted in their respective exaltation signs on March 7, 2019, when the transit occurs.

The Nodes:

While Rahu indicates the desires of the human being which leads to rebirth, Ketu indicates freedom from those desires. Rahu is Bhogakaraka while Ketu is Mokshakaraka. Since Ketu indicates freedom from desire and travelling towards emancipation, it does not have planetary aspect, because these aspects are indicative of desire. This is also shown by the fact that Ketu does not have a head. We desire what we see and we look at that which we desire; in the absence of a head, the question does not arise.

Rahu has a head, but only a head and therefore Rahu has planetary aspect being replete with the quality of desire.

The Nodes, for this reason, are (generally) always opposite to each other in charts in the Vedic horoscope.

The Sign of Gemini:

The sign of Gemini is the 3^rdHouse of the Kalapurusha and the natural expression of personality. It is also a part of the Kama Trikona or the trine relating to desires. Naturally, there is no surprise that Rahu is exalted here. The sign is ruled by Mercury who shall be retrograde at the time of the Nodal transit and therefore some Karmic events pertaining to desires, communications, and the expression of the self may come to pass simply for this reason.

Ketu will be exalted in the sign of Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter and therefore esoteric and spiritual understanding and things like abstract mathematics will grow and prosper.

Exchange between Jupiter and Ketu:

Since Ketu is the co-lord of the sign of Scorpio where Jupiter is currently transiting, an exchange occurs between Ketu and Jupiter. Through an agreement between these two planets, Ketu will finally act from its own sign Scorpio and Jupiter will act from its own sign Sagittarius. Very Karmic events can be expected to manifest in charts depending on the life areas ruled by Scorpio and Sagittarius respectively. This is specially true till Jupiter changes Rashi owing to its own transit on March 29, 2019 and moves to Sagittarius, joining Ketu in the process. If significant events are indicated relating to Scorpio and Sagittarius in the nativity, then these may happen now in a very destine sort of way. Therefore, due to this exchange of signs, the signs of Gemini, Scorpio and Sagittarius come into focus for people, depending on what these signs rule in the given charts. To miss the exchange would be to miss the effect of the transit entirely.

Rahu and Ketu will not truly be opposed to each other during the transit and while the exchange operates. Ketu in Scorpio will elevate the occult and research. Deep delving into things will come to the fore. Ketu can either indicate decimation of material reality or its highest flights because Ketu can raise its flag in surprising ways if Scorpio should indicate material bounty in any horoscope. If Jupiter supports this in the natal Rashi chart, then it is quite likely to happen.

On the other hand, if these two planets should indicate a spiritual event of transformation, then that is equally likely to happen because Jupiter in Sagittarius supports it, as does Ketu in the sign of Scorpio.

Impact of Rahu-Ketu Transit:

For the reasons stated above, Rahu in Gemini will promote aspiration and hedonism. Owing to the wealth of information in the sign of Gemini, the transit shall be marked by intellectual curiosity and growth and flights of the mind in every way conceivable.

This can be good in material and practical terms if Rahu is otherwise well-placed both in the nativity and in the transit when reckoned from the relevant reference points. This is a complicated calculation and ought to be carried out only in specific horoscopes without too much generalization. Still, generalize we must in this article for it is not possible to examine every or even any number of placements of the planet hypothetically.

So we can say that if Rahu is in Upachaya Bhava in the natal horoscope/ and or during this transit then it can foster materially positive results in some way or the other though in some of these places it can also promote vices. Likewise, if Rahu is well-placed from the Arudha Lagna in the natal horoscope or during the transit then also it is quite likely to transpire, if not even more so, for the Arudhas and the Bhavas therefrom are to do with the manifestation of events. The same goes for Ketu.

The more difficult aspects of Rahu’s placement, whether natally or in transit, are usually in the Kendra/ quadrant from the Udaya Lagna or its Trikona/ trines unless it forms Rajayoga.

Even in the other personal places like the 12^thHouse from the Lagna, Rahu in certain charts only, can give food for thought. One has observed, that in charts otherwise not susceptible or open to occurrences of a particular kind, these transits are not particularly adverse. But if adversity is indicated in the natal horoscope, and supported by the applicable Dashas, then this transit of Rahu should be watched.

The same principles are applicable to Ketu because Ketu materially is an even greater malefic than Rahu. Ketu denotes Shunyaand can reduce everything to zero, and to rubble.

On the positive side, if Scorpio is materially beneficial in any horoscope, then Ketu can indicate either buying an apartment or improving one’s apartment especially of Scorpio influences the 4^thHouse of home from the Lagna or the Arudha Lagna. In the Upachaya, Ketu will bring gains and competitiveness while decimating the enemy (like Rahu) in certain cases.

In the chart of Bhagwan Shri Rama, for instance, Rahu is in the 6^thHouse from the Lagna. One should not fight with such a person even if ones thinks that one is Ravana because we all know what will happen. This is very pertinent from the Arudha Lagna and applies at least with equal force to the 3^rdHouse from the Arudha.

Impact of Jupiter-Ketu conjunction:

On March 29, Jupiter will move into its own sign Sagittarius and will join Ketu there. This is a very spiritual combination which makes it conducive to tap into the wisdom of esoteric traditions. Materially, though it can be testing because Guru is Dhanakaraka, the significator for wealth, and its conjunction with Ketu can stress the signification. Sagittarius is the 9^thHouse of the natural zodiac and indicates religion and religious sentiment. These can occupy a position of prominence during the transit. Jupiter and Sagittarius also indicate intellectualism and specifically the law. Radical expressions of the law may also be more in evidence during the transit.

PARADISE LOST:

We can never forget Saturn. We can never overlook Saturn, or the planet will remind us of its existence and placement. Saturn in a sign of Jupiter is not an adverse placement but when Jupiter conjoins two first-rate malefics in Dhanusha Rashi, Saturn and Ketu, the paradise of Jupiter is lost. It is the placement from the Arudha Lagna and/ or conjunction with specific Arudha Padas which will determine more precise results.

The association of Saturn with Ketu is not considered auspicious and a battle of sorts is going on between the two. Likewise, the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn is sometimes very testing. The beneficence of Jupiter is taken by the malefic. It is for this reason that an un-conjoined Jupiter is preferred in any nativity. At times it can indicate a fight to the finish which does not have a victor and can lead to very dire consequences for both parties. So, all is not well in Sagittarius and since the Chandra Rashi is also going through the Sade-Sati of Saturn, caution and appropriate measures are strongly advised.

It cannot also be forgotten, that while Ketu does not have planetary aspect, Rahu does and therefore aspects Sagittarius from Gemini. From its exaltation, Rahu aspects its sign of debility. Value systems and internal frameworks of morality and ethics can be severely stressed for people vulnerable to these in any way, in their own horoscopes.

THE AIR SIGNS:

The air signs are strongly influenced by the nodal transit. Rahu is placed in Gemini and aspects Libra and Aquarius with planetary aspect. The aspect to Libra is the 9^thHouse aspect from Gemini (in reverse) and imbues the sign of Libra with the peculiar intelligence of Rahu. For people with the sign Libra dominant in the horoscope, this is something to look out for. Notable exceptions can be people working on the world stage or with a global perspective, because Rahu is in its Marana Karaka station when reckoned from Libra.

Aquarius truly comes into its own with the 5^thHouse aspect of Rahu from Gemini (in reverse) and can people with the sign dominant start planning for the future in right earnest. Rahu in Gemini can show them the way forward, for better or for worse. As long as this planning is characterized by supreme intellect, it will tend to be positive at the mundane level for the natives of Aquarius Lagna. Some similar trends can come for Leo because Rahu is exalted in the 11^thHouse of gains, friends and income.

THE HANGMAN’S NOOSE:

The so-called 2^ndHouse aspect of Rahu is actually its 12^thHouse aspect (in reverse). This aspect denotes secret enmity and viewed in regular direction is the Maraka (killer) aspect of Rahu. It is the hangman’s noose. This aspect falls on Cancer and people with this sign dominant should be careful of deceit and machinations during this transit especially if this is indicated in the natal charts.

The nodal transit indicates the shifting of Karma and is therefore pertinent for that reason itself.

TRANSIT OF JUPITER IN SCORPIO:

Jupiter has now moved into the Vedic sign of Scorpio on October 11, 2018. In order to understand this event, which is, and is going to undergo metamorphosis, with the efflux of time, into a process, we need to quickly revisit first, the basic essentials of both Jupiter and Scorpio.

JUPITER IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY

In Vedic astrology, Jupiter is the greatest benefic planet as far as the true good for mankind goes. It is therefore clear that goodness in life, in its myriad hues, must depend, at least in part, on the position of Jupiter in the natal horoscope, and in transit. It is one of those planets in Vedic astrology, whose transit movements are studied irrespective of whether it governs any conspicuous Dasha in the given nativity or not. Jupiter is the Deva Guru or the Preceptor of the Gods. His advice and influence, thus, often operate as a measure of protection in the form of blessings, which are themselves a function of cohesiveness and binding. Things bind and split based on the presence and absence of the blessings of Jupiter.

DRAMATIC EVENTS TIMED WITH THE JUPITER TRANSIT:

Oftentimes we see significant events associated with the very ingress of the planet into a sign, which is also the same as marking its exit from the preceding sign. To say this more clearly in the present context, the movement of Jupiter into Scorpio and out of Libra may have shown up dramatically in certain Vedic horoscopes. By definition, this can raise eyebrows for Jupiter is phlegmatic and his movements are not intended to precipitate drama. In actual fact also they do not; the dramatic events that sometimes show up are precipitated by natal Yogas which may or may not have anything to do with Jupiter. The transit brings these forth often as a result of a single factor, which has been referred to above- the introduction of, or the cessation of, the element of protection and cohesiveness which depends on the movement, and aspect of the great benefic.

IMPORTANCE OF THE ASPECTS OF TRANSIT JUPITER:

The presence and aspect of Jupiter, and by aspect we mean both Rashi Drishti, the sign aspect of the planet, and the Graha Drishti, the planetary aspect, in that order, decide binding and cohesion or their absence in given areas in life. Generally, for this reason, in traditional Jyotisha, it is thought beneficial if Jupiter is not associated with any planet in the natal Vedic horoscope, especially by conjunction. The conjoined planet takes on the auspiciousness of Jupiter but the auspiciousness of Jupiter is gone. We do not want the auspiciousness of Jupiter to go.

To give a specific instance of the foregoing proposition, when we judge the auspiciousness of a certain time we look at the sign aspect of Jupiter in transit to the relevant area of the horoscope. If it is there, we can hope for this single factor to help us tide over any negatives, should they be there. Conversely, we would like to avoid such an aspect of a dire malefic. Whereas Jupiter binds and favours success, the malefic splits and disfavours success. The much-vaunted aspect of the transit Jupiter to the 2^ndHouse from the Upapada Lagna (UL) has its roots in this thinking. And conversely, with malefics.

THE VEDIC SIGN OF SCORPIO:

Scorpio, though a malefic sign, has much more to it. It is a Jala Rashi, a Water sign, in one of which, Cancer, Karkata, Jupiter is exalted. Jupiter is very good in the Jala Tattwa Rashi fostering correct emotion and social connection. Scorpio is also a Brahmin Rashi, and for that reason also, Jupiter the Karaka for knowledge feels happy here. If we see, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces form the Water trine and an examination of each sign in the context of the happiness of Jupiter will easily show that Jupiter is happy here.

Jupiter has just left Libra. No matter how unhappy Jupiter was here, if there are troubling facets in natal Libra in any given horoscope, Jupiter was pouring Ganga Jal (non-polluted) over these troubles. Now, Jupiter has left, and so, the troubles in Libra no longer have the protection of Jupiter. It is for reasons such as these that sometimes we will have dramatic events unfold. Of course, the clock may have been ticking in several other ways, but transit is always a device to time that which was always meant to happen, like a postman delivering mail which had been marked to your address and put in the course of dispatch earlier, but has arrived only now, at this point in time.

Yogas associated with the sign of Scorpio will tend to fructify with relative ease, and now that Jupiter is there, the transit will further aid matters. Scorpio, otherwise is a malefic sign and despite its Jala Tattwa has a lot of heat associated with it. In this sense, the transit of Jupiter in the sign of Scorpio is very good because it tempers the aggression there and gives it sage direction. Scorpio is also directly associated with sexuality, more so with matters which are not always in full view.

SCORPIO AND PERSONAL LIFE:

Being the 8^thHouse of the natural zodiac, Scorpio is prone to breaking marital alliances and bringing in discord in relationships. It is for this reason that even certain auspicious planets placed in this sign in the Navamsha always portend caution in the personal realm, for the Navamsha chart is the specific domain of the personal and the marital and Scorpio, and placement in Scorpio, is very sensitive here for the horoscope.

JUPITER IN THE LAGNA (ASCENDANT):

Jupiter in the Lagna in the natal horoscope is considered to be a great blessing. One is advised to worship Shiva in such a case, and it is said that even one sincere bow before the trident holder is sufficient to cure the chart of a thousand evils. We can then readily surmise that the transit of Jupiter in the Lagna is equally beneficial since it directly impacts the life circumstances and the power of discrimination. The horoscope starts with the Lagna and when the Lagna is made auspicious owing to the transit of Jupiter, the beneficial aspects will percolate throughout the chart. The decision-making will be vastly improved because Jupiter always shows the correct direction.

For those with Scorpio Lagna, therefore, this is a good time, and for those with this Lagna, for whom the Dashas indicate a positive time in life, the transit is apt for them to try and accomplish the best works. The Graha Drishti or the planetary aspect of Jupiter both to the 5^thand the 9^thHouses ensures that the future and the past are well-illuminated. What this means in actual practice is that the light shines in such a way that the events of the past are properly construed, and future steps are taken with appreciable insight.

THE ENIGMA OF THE GURUS:

As one has mentioned before, the Gurus are not easy to understand and there can be cases where either one of Jupiter or Venus take on the mantle of the positive Guru for the nativity. It can be therefore, that for people with malefic combinations in the sign Scorpio, and for whom Jupiter is not playing a conventionally positive role, the transit precipitates the testing nature of the combinations in the sign.

This kind of a situation can be understood only on specific personal study of the horoscope where the individual concerned is ready to receive the insights from this relatively rarefied realm. Otherwise of course, generally speaking, Jupiter can be understood to give His positive grace wherever He goes, for that is His nature.

ASPECT OF TRANSIT JUPITER TO CANCER AND PISCES, GENERALLY:

Since Cancer is the exaltation sign of the planet Jupiter, the aspect of Jupiter to this sign by its planetary aspect is excellent. Jupiter desires the results of its exaltation to come to the Rashi. So, the sign Cancer benefits in every nativity to the extent possible for that nativity. In the abstract, one can venture that home, education, heart and the feeling of positive competition, as that which used to exist in the Brahmins of yore, in the realm of knowledge of the scripture, will be positively impacted depending on a host of factors which will decide for each person whether the benefit is notable, and if so, to what extent. Cancer is one of the blessed signs, and so if a blessing exists in the sign in any chart, it will be fructified by the aspect of Guru. If instead a curse exists, then it may be mitigated or brought into clear focus with a view to resolution. It is in this manner that the grace of Jupiter is to be understood.

Now, Pisces is the own sign of Jupiter and the aspect of transit Jupiter to this sign is also excellent, simply for that reason. Whatever Pisces should represent in any given Rashi Chakra, will stand to benefit subject to the contours of that particular horoscope. Pisces is considered to be the sign of the Rishis. The aspect of Jupiter to this sign brings forth the opportunity to tap into the eternal teachings of Hinduism, the Sanatana Dharma. Of course, Vedic Astrology never says that eternal teachings are appropriated by any one religion and so no matter to which faith one subscribes, spiritual bounty is all set to be received if one is interested and the Karma for that person points in that direction. Pisces can also indicate travel and expenses, and with the influence of transit Jupiter these can be positively influenced to indicate travel and expenses for higher and intellectual pursuits. Pisces can also bring in auspiciousness, happiness and goodness by triggering these in the chart in some way and so the more discerning among us can try and tap into these benefits if we can.

SIGN-WISE ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF THE JUPITER TRANSIT FOR EACH LAGNA AND ARUDHA LAGNA:

For ARIES Ascendant (Lagna), this promises to be a very interesting time in the positive, and a somewhat testing time in the negative. With Jupiter, the greatest benefic transiting the malefic Scorpio, and that too in the 8^thHouse from the Lagna, things can lead to great transformation through accessing matters which were hitherto hidden. This applies with special force to the occult and the esoteric, matters governed both by Jupiter and Scorpio in different ways. In the negative, however, the benefic Jupiter in the 8^thHouse is not good. It is the 9^thLord for the Lagna and in the 8^thHouse, it dissipates the luck and fortune that it rules as the 9^thLord.

Things are very different for the Mesha Arudha Lagna (AL) and the transit of Jupiter in the 8^thHouse from the AL indicates taking loans and repayment of debts. The 8^thHouse and its role from the AL depends on some specific factors in the nativity when reckoned from the AL, which cannot be gone into here, and so we will leave it there. Suffice it to say, that in some cases the element of loans and debts will not play out during this transit, or at least for this reason, for the Mesha AL.

For TAURUS Lagna, the transit of Jupiter is in the 7^thHouse and is good in the sense that better sense will prevail in the marriage and in personal relationships. Unless, Guru is the Dasha lord for the Lagna in a major Dasha system, the transit will largely give positive results in marriage, partnerships and will also reflect well in the career and work. If it is the Dasha lord, there can be food for thought for Guru is the 8^thLord of the Mangalya Bhava for this Lagna. Whatever it may be, marriage and personal relationships are brought into sharp relief during this transit of the planet.

For the AL of this sign, the transit of Jupiter in the 7^thHouse is excellent and may aid emergence into the world into their own right, and facilitate transactions of some importance with society at large.

The movement of Jupiter to the Dusthana for GEMINI Lagna is stressful because the 6^thHouse is very inimical to the Lagna and the presence of the great benefic in this Bhava from the Lagna indicates distancing from the attributes of Jupiter. Jupiter indicates benefic grace and this is getting lost and dissipated in the illness and adversity that comprises the 6^thHouse. When the grace of God is not forthcoming to the Lagna, it can be said to be an ordinary time. For the people with the AL in Gemini, the situation is not better but decidedly worse. The AL shows what is actually coming to pass in life, and the various houses when reckoned from the AL show much the same thing. Wealth and auspiciousness can take a downswing for vulnerable horoscopes with Mithuna AL, either generally or at the present time, coinciding with this transit.

I have written above about the positive impact of the transit for the Jala Rashi, of which CANCERis one. For this Lagna, the transit of Jupiter is in the 5^thHouse of the future. Jupiter transit is very good in the trines from the Lagna because blessings are more readily forthcoming from the divine. Also, from this position, Jupiter aspects both the 9^thHouse of Bhagya and the Lagna itself, infusing the self with optimism and correct thinking and triggering fated events. In a similar vein, Jupiter is even better in transit for the Cancer AL, because Jupiter in the 5^thHouse from the AL will help sustain all positives associated with the Bhava.

For the fiery LEOLagna, the transit of Jupiter is in the 4^thHouse from the Ascendant. The 4^thHouse is that of home and family, properties and academic attainments. All these matters stand to benefit greatly during this transit for the Leo Lagna. It also indicates a considerable change from the transit of Jupiter in Libra, where it was in the Marana Karaka Sthana (MKS) placement for the Lagna which is not good. Goodness would have appeared to die around Leo in the past and so merely cessation of such a scenario is a positive sign. Additionally we know that for the Kalapurusha, Cancer is the natural 4^thHouse and Jupiter is exalted here. By necessary implication, the transit of Jupiter in the 4^thHouse for Leo, in a friendly sign will prompt Jupiter to approximate to His exaltation when it comes to precipitating results.

For the Leo AL also the results are positive as Jupiter expands learning and acquisition, if these should be promised in the nativity through Yogas in the horoscope.

Even the greatest benefic in the zodiac can obstruct, and this is the case for VIRGOLagna. Guru is the Badhaka for the Lagna, but will only be adverse if the planet is poorly placed in the Rashi Chakra of the natal horoscope or otherwise devoid of strength. However, the Badhaka nature of the planet for the Lagna is not of prime concern for the Gochara; the main issue is that Guru is transiting the MKS position from the Lagna. It is in a friendly sign. The results will vary depending upon what Jupiter indicates in the natal horoscope. In some cases, the planet will deliver up whatever it has for the individual in question. In other cases, and by and large, Jupiter transit is not good for the Lagna and once again goodness and blessings may appear to be in short supply during the transit.

As always though, we live in the manifest world, and no matter what is happening from the Lagna internally, it is the precipitate of the Karma which is amenable to the senses that decides the quality of time and experience. From the Virgo AL, Jupiter transit is highly adverse and a cautionary note needs to be struck here. At the first sign of major distress, the individuals of this AL are advised to seek help from appropriate quarters. The position of the benefic in the 3^rdHouse from the AL cannot be taken lightly. The human factor in humanity is governed by Jupiter and when in the 3^rdHouse from the AL, this runs the risk of being lost, nothing more need be said on the subject.

Though Jupiter has now transited out of LIBRA Lagna, the planet was not very comfortable there and with the ingress into Scorpio, the influence has now come to the 2^ndHouse from the Lagna. The 2^ndHouse is the Dhana Bhava, the house of wealth and assets. Jupiter is the significator for wealth and finances and if the 2^ndHouse is well-fortified then the transit of Jupiter will precipitate positive and auspicious events. If the 2^ndHouse if afflicted, even in that situation Jupiter will try and pour water over troubled matters. In any event, more clarity is likely to ensure in matters related to the planets in the 2^ndHouse and the significations of the 2^ndHouse from the Lagna. The situation is vastly better for the Libra AL, where Jupiter is excellently placed in the 2^ndBhava from the AL. This will be mostly focussed on wealth and finances and Jupiter may bring out many positives in this area of life during His transit in the sign.

Jupiter is extremely positive for SCORPIO Lagna, being the 2^ndand the 5^thLord. Jupiter in the Lagna gives this Karmic Lagna to worship the trident holder and lighten the burden. Jupiter blesses the children and fosters luck and good fortune with His aspects to the 5^thand the 9^thHouses respectively. Jupiter in the AL for this sign is positive for overall existence and the image of the individual in society.

This is the first Rashi which is undergoing the Sade-Sati transit of Saturn. People with the natal Moon in Scorpio will feel the relief brought by transit Jupiter. Otherwise the sign has been going through the wringer in personal life and relationships, matters of health and emotional well-being and currently, finances. The Moon is debilitated in this sign and so poor decisions of the past in any area will reveal themselves in their true colours. While the Moon in the natal horoscope will continue to be Nicha if it is, this is a chance for these individuals to take the sage advice of the Guru and mend their ways. If this is not done and the horoscope is vulnerable then Saturn can wreak havoc through Artha-related matters. Money, wealth, work, career and all these areas can be damaged by transit Saturn if the benefic grace of Jupiter is not accepted or availed of.

Note- For all signs use the planetary aspects of Jupiter as described above in this paper to decipher the active influences on the other houses. For instance, for Taurus Lagna, Jupiter will aspect the Lagna with Graha Drishti and the 11^thHouse of friends and gains and the fulfilment of hopes and desires. The planet will also aspect the 3^rdHouse from the Lagna giving sage advice to the Dushchikya Bhava which usually brings competitiveness and Mars-influenced thoughts to the head.

The best starts and expenses on auspicious and positive matters is the first result experienced by SAGITTARIUSLagna. Expenses may be notable but they will be on matters that are laudable and spiritually sanctioned. This can also be construed to mean that expenses oughtto be on good things because the worst thing one can do is to earn the wrath of the Guru. Some serious spiritual transformation and occult insights can be expected because Shani/ Saturn is transiting the Lagna. If the Moon is placed in this sign then the Sade-Sati transit of Saturn is in its peak period, being right on the head of the native. This is a good time to outgrow that which is no longer required in life. Jupiter will aid the transformation because of the aspect to the 8^thHouse of secrets and transformation. The heart can undergo a change owing to the aspect to the 4^thHouse from the Lagna. All these matters especially related to the expenses and conduct or the Gati (direction) of life will be clearly seen from the AL.

For CAPRICORN Lagna, Jupiter being the Karaka for the 11^thHouse is transiting the Bhava. Friends, gains and income will be positively influenced. So too the future prospects, children, marriage and the lesser thought processes that beset human beings in mundane matters. For the people with the AL in this sign, the tangible and manifest aspects of gains and income will be there for all to see.

This is the third sign to be undergoing the Sade-Sati of Saturn. Saturn is testing people in their personal lives and marriages. This aspect is aided for people with the Dhanusha Lagna. If the Moon is in Lagna, marriage and problems in marital life heightened by Saturn can be helped by the aspect of Jupiter to the 7^thHouse of marriage.

Amala Yoga or spotless reputation in work comes to people with AQUARIUS Lagna with Jupiter in the 10^thHouse from the Lagna especially if the 10^thHouse is auspicious in the chart and unafflicted by malefics. The Artha Trikona of work and career is positively influenced because these houses are influenced by the transit Jupiter. Jupiter is just short of excellent for the people with the AL in this sign but the ultimate results will be good in the realm of work and career.

For PISCES Lagna, Jupiter is in the 9^thHouse of Bhagya, a house of which it is a significator. Foreign travel, higher education, father, luck and fortune and the blessings of the Guru can all come during this transit. The results are not as good for people with the AL in this sign because Jupiter is the only planet who struggles in this placement from the AL. People may feel disinterested with striving as a way of life with this transit of Jupiter. For the Meena Lagna though, the aspect to the Lagna and to the 5^thHouse are auspicious. Self, decision-making and children are all areas that benefit during this transit.

Implications of Decriminalisation of Adultery in Vedic Astrology Horoscopes and in Life

Adultery, decriminalised-

Section 497 of the Indian Penal Code has recently been struck down by the Supreme Court of India andthereby the offence of adultery has been removed from the statute book. This is now the law of the land in India. For this reason, there is nothing to be said further on the subject from that perspective. There is absolutely no doubt that on the touchstone of individual freedom and autonomy, the change in the law cannot be faulted.

In Vedic Astrology-

In this paper, however, we are interested in the implications in Vedic astrology of the aforesaid position in law. In other words, if this is a fated occurrence as it must be, given the doctrine of Karma and determinism, then the planets/ Grahas in question, which pertain to the subject-matter ought to be scrutinized with a careful eye to see the aforesaid change through the prism of Vedic astrology.

Significators for adultery-

The main planets associated with adultery are Mars (Mangala), directly, and Rahu, the North Node of the Moon, by necessary implication because Rahu rules cheating and deceit in general.

Mars (Mangala)-

Mars is by very nature adulterous. This is a curious phenomenon because Mars is otherwise a soldier, or a uniformed person, and being on the side of the Devas, a great worshipper of God. Interestingly, he is also the significator of celibacy and bachelorhood. For such a planet, to indulge in adultery is surprising but not so surprising if we consider Mars deeply, including through his other name, Vakra, or the crooked one. Mars acts in crooked ways. Adultery is a manifestation of his crookedness.

Something for Mars to note-

The fact that adultery was a criminal offence in India till recently would not have stopped Mars or people strongly influenced by Mars in matters of sexuality and relationships from being adulterous, but would have obviously rendered such conduct criminal if discovered and complained against. Now, Mars does not face the impediment of the prospect of prosecution and punishment.

People Influenced by Mars, not Mars himself-

Since we are really not talking about Mars the planet in himself, but really about people influenced by Mars in the relevant areas of life, it would be prudent to assume that the threat and risk of criminal process would have either deterred such people, or would have coloured their conduct in some manner. Now, the Mars in the lives and conduct of such people is free to do as he pleases and the adulterous element in his portfolio is legitimized in criminal law.

Malefics, and Consent & Connivance-

It is interesting to note that earlier if adultery occurred with the consent or the connivance of the husband then it was outside the purview of the mischief contemplated. The crookedness of Mars in a scenario of complicit intercourse was not crooked enough for punitive measures to follow it. This was also a lower denomination of Rahu for while there was intercourse outside the marriage, there was no cheating strictly speaking, owing to the consent or connivance of the husband. This was an exception to the criminality of adulterous conduct precipitated by Mars and/ or Rahu.

Now, the scenario is whether the husband connives or consents or not, adulterous intercourse is no longer a criminal act. In other words, the adulterous nature of Mars is now socially accepted. Same goes for the deceit and cheating of Rahu. These are now brought into the mainstream as being more truly representative of current human existence as regards relations between men and women.

Consequences of Adultery, as it stands-

There are consequences of adultery which still remain possibilities. It could be a ground to seek divorce and it could be considered as furthering or abetting suicide if the latter is precipitated owing to adulterous conduct. In other words, Mars and Rahu can still formally damage Venus. Informally, of course, it is not hard to imagine that being natural malefics, they will damage Venus. Venus is the significator of marriage.

This should be read as follows. Though a couple knows that adultery is not an offence, it is by no means a desirable occurrence in a marriage. While there is no criminal consequence of adultery per se, if it should lead to a suicide or if adulterous intercourse amounts to rape, then criminal consequences can follow. Simply because there are no criminal consequences per se it does not mean that Venus goes away unscathed. The marriage and the wife will be damaged in case the husband is adulterous and the marriage will be damaged if the wife is adulterous. If the wife is adulterous, then the husband will also be damaged.

The significator for the husband is Jupiter and while Mars can damage Jupiter with the Tamas, it is Rahu which causes the Guru-Chandala Yoga. In other words, a wife more influenced by Rahu in her adulterous relationship appears to be more of a threat to the well-being of the husband than Mars simply on first principle. It is made clear that this will depend on the configurations in the charts for a more elaborate understanding and whether the principle applies by way of a modification, significant or otherwise.

The Nature & Agenda of Mars-

Mars revels in the crookedness that comprises adultery in part measure, crookedness being a deviation from the norm. The element of crookedness remains, to be sure, since the lack of criminal consequence will usually not propel adultery into full view. But the crookedness of Mars in this manifestation is diminished. However, the crookedness of Mars cannot diminish in absolute terms.

Mars will become more crooked to compensate. Mars does not hide. He will not become more covert. He rules violence and aggression. He likes to break things. More marriages will break. Mars rules the natural 8^thHouse of the zodiac, which is Scorpio. It is in the nature of Mars to break marriage. His crookedness in adultery has been accepted in large measure and thereby mitigated. Mars will retaliate because he wants to be as crooked as he was earlier in this manifestation. He will add to his crookedness in this manifestation. He is likely to be more destructive of the marital bond and more violent where he manifests through domestic or other types of violence.

The Nature & Agenda of Rahu-

Rahu on the other hand will devise ways to keep up his levels of deceit and shock which cannot be readily foreseen, for then they would be that much less deceitful and shocking. Adultery is by definition covert, and therefore still in the realm of Rahu. But Rahu is emboldened by the lack of criminal consequence when he is adulterous, either in a male or female nativity. The nastiest plans and machinations will be let loose by Rahu in appropriate cases to compensate for his pleasure which has been taken away to a degree by illuminating the shadows. While Mars is likely to be more openly adulterous, because he never cared for the continuance of marriage anyway, Rahu will be ready with a myriad explanations, apart from being ready with the sort of things that have been mentioned above.

The Transit of Venus-

It is quite interesting to note that the change in the law has come when Venus is transiting the sign of Libra. This is the Moolatrikona Rashi of Venus. The decision has been said to be a departure from the Victorian mindset and in favour of the sexual autonomy of a human being. The reason is not far to seek. Venus is at work in the sign of Libra, which is the 7^thHouse of the natural zodiac and relates to marriage and sexuality. Venus is very strong in Libra and being at work here largely represents working women. It is such a woman who participates in the marketplace of the world who has been at the forefront of the thinking on the subject. She is free to act on her own, and in the context of the actions of her husband as well. The change has come through the law because Jupiter, the significator of law, is joined Venus in Libra. Venus also exalts in the sign of Jupiter and there cannot be any doubt that the decision is truly founded on the premise that a woman is not the chattel of man, but instead of stopping at making the erstwhile provision gender-neutral, the provision has been struck down in its entirety.

Men & Women of Signs and Planets-

What will happen to the Taurus woman who bears the brunt of adulterous conduct in some way or the other. Taurus is the other sign owned by Venus, but is vastly different from the sign of Libra. Ironically, the Taurus woman is the Victorian woman.

What will happen to the Mars man, the man who is not criminal, or undesirable or crooked in any other way, apart from the sexual and the marital for the simple reason that Mars influences these aspects in the chart. What will happen to the Mars woman, one with independence of means, and one without.

What will happen to the Rahu man and the Rahu woman.

These questions are rhetorical. All discerning astrology readers will know the answers to these. The simplistic answer is furnished only for the Libra woman, for whom the bell has tolled.

If people are free, the malefics working in freer people are themselves a trifle freer to act now, than they were earlier.

Obviously, what is of major importance is the way these planets will play out in various charts, which is to say, how they will react in individual lives and impact the institution of marriage.

Real Vedic horoscopes and thus Real Lives-

Let us consider Mars as the planet bringing a serious relationship of a personal nature in a male nativity. Let us further restrict ourselves to the more physical dimensions of compatibility in this example. In a male nativity, Mars may bring relationships, in fact, he certainly will but it is always with an element of crookedness. He may be looking elsewhere, and now he may do more than simply look elsewhere, while bringing about a relationship or even marriage. The force of Mars gives energy to the relationship but as the breaker of marriages, now the situation is even more fraught with danger, because there is no fear of punishment. The only realistic and proximate consequence is that of the relationship or marriage breaking but that never deterred Mars in the first place.

Therefore, Mars in very personal areas in the chart, such as the 7^thHouse and the 12^thHouse, needs to be watched carefully. This was always the situation, but is altered in the manner stated above.

In the female nativity, Mars is exactly as Venus is in the male nativity. Mars directs the passions and the attractions. Not much changes here though since there was no culpability in law for female adultery in the first place.

In places such as the Lagna, or the 4^thHouse or the 8^thHouse the dangers of Mars will reflect in tune with the other configurations in the Vedic horoscope. In the Lagna, it is the very nature of the person to imbibe some of the characteristics of the malefic planet. What those characteristics are, here and in any other situation in the Vedic charts, will depend on the overall nature of that chart, and of the horoscope on the whole. In the 4^thHouse there are control issues in the matrimonial home. In fact, since even from the Lagna, owing to the 4^thHouse aspect, these issues can arise. These are the real reasons for the placements to go by the name of Mangalika Dosha. In the 8^thHouse of the horoscope, the longevity of the marriage and the spouse can be threatened by Mars. He wants to break and end something, and whatever the 8^thHouse can offer, Mars will take it.

Rahu is much worse in these places in many respects. A strong Mars is a straight forward fighter. There is no deceit in a strong Mars. He does not care for machinations. A weak Mars can resort to very bad things. Rahu by his very nature is devious. His pleasure is not in mere crookedness but in shocking departures from the norm. People influenced or ensnared by Rahu in delicate positions in the horoscope influencing personal life are more at risk because Rahu will more readily step into criminality, convinced that he will get away.

The Navamsha chart is the specific area of the horoscope where the exact turn of events, intentions, actions, and results can be captured. It is this chart which rules relationships and marriage. The placement of these two malefics in this divisional chart are of the utmost importance.

Of course, the discussion has the potential to be never-ending but this is an initial survey of the impact on planetary energies and how they are likely to play out in individual nativities vulnerable to the mischief under traverse.

Vimshottari and other Dashas in Vedic Astrology: Deeper Truths of the Harbingers of Karma

Dashas, generally:

Dashas in Vedic astrology are the harbingers of Karma. The natal Vedic horoscope remains the same from birth to death but it is the Dashas, along with other factors such as transits (Gochara) that fructify different parts of the Karma in the same natal horoscope, and thus change life.

Kinds of Dasha:

Just as there are many intricacies in the Vedic horoscope such as Arudha Padas which were not as well-known a few decades back as they are now, though they have always been pillars of Jyotisha, so too the presence of various kinds of Dashas in the classical literature. Not only are there a host of Dashas, there are numerous factors associated with Dashas which are otherwise not known, and which are to be used for effective analysis of the Karma and predictions emanating therefrom.

Higher works and distinct analysis:

Just as one has been travelling higher in terms of advancement of the works written for consulters over the years, as awareness of principles sets in, these intricacies of Dashas are now being used both in distinct papers as well as parts of these higher and advanced papers, as tools for interpretation.

Specific Dashas:

One has written earlier, and used profusely, some of these Dasha systems based on the configurations in individual horoscopes, and those that have received these works, shall readily recognize the fact. For instance, the Padakrama Dasha or the Narayana Dasha of Rashis has been extensively used where fate or determinism plays a significant role, signs indicating circumstance rather than desire.

Other Dashas such as the Dwisaptati Sama Dasha, Ashtottari Dasha, Dwadashottari Dasha, Chataruasheetika Dasha, Shashtihayani Dasha, and so on, have often been used in private papers as tools for investigation of the unfolding of Karma.

Circumstance and desire:

Desire then is left to the Grahas (planets) and the manifestation of this Karmic desire of the planets manifests through the Dashas of these planets in the various systems based on the Nakshatras occupied by these planets.

Vimshottari Dasha, the Chief:

Be that as it may, the classical literature is distinctly clear in that it is the Vimshottari Dasha, which is the chief among all the other Dashas. Thus, even though conditional Nakshatra Dashas may be applicable in a horoscope, in certain ways the Vimshottari Dasha is always applicable.

The term Dasha indicates and means a state of being. Thus, all Dashas aim to reflect the state of affairs in the horoscope under scrutiny owing to their own operation, and precipitation of the Karma in their realm of operation.

Types of Vimshottari Dasha:

The Dasha that is used most often, and rightly so, is a reflection of the social stimuli, public participation, emotions, and the overall flux of life that pertains to the existence of the native of the horoscope in question. However, advanced Jyotisha is quite clear that there are variants of the general Vimshottari which are to be used in cases where the conditions for their applicability are met.

These are: Utpanna Vimshottari, Kshema Vimshottari, Aadhana Vimshottari and Kevala Vimshottari. Especially for predictive purposes, it is important to use these variations so as to arrive at the correct manifestation of the Karma during the operation of the Mahadasha and Antardashas of the various planets. The conditions for the applicability of these variations are distinct and specific.

Judgment of Results of the Vimshottari Dasha:

Thus, when we consider the Vimshottari Dasha in all its classical splendour, we will discover as we proceed that the judgment of its results does not truly emanate from the popular premise which is commonly understood in the public domain.

Suffice it to say at this juncture that there are numerous considerations such as evaluating the lord of the Dasha in ways that are not popularly known, and then moving on to the lord of the sign which the lord of the Dasha occupies.

Separately, we also consider the various internal and external domains of the application of the Dasha, and then the extension of this principle to the mutual interplay of the Mahadasha and the Antardasha is undertaken applying the same device. All this is largely unknown in the realm of popular astrology, even in its more sincere domains.

In the result, it is clear that the meaningful journey in Vedic astrology involves traversing increasingly rarified though classically astute segments and principles of Vedic astrology, and equally, it is a very rewarding personal journey to try and adhere closely to the works and words of the Rishis.

Case Study of the Moon sign: Sudden breathing problems and remedies in Vedic astrology

Quite recently, a curious case presented itself. It was surmised that owing to painting and polishing works being carried on in a household, due to the chemicals comprising the materials irritating the system, breathing problems manifested.

These were of a serious nature. There was shortness of breath, frequent bouts of severe coughing at very short intervals and inability to sleep. The medicines prescribed did not really help much and since the constitution of the native was delicate, the medication focusing on asthma caused dryness in the system.

The works could not be discontinued and efforts to distance oneself from the fumes and the smell of the chemicals were futile; relief was not really felt in other houses of friends for one reason or another. Given the high temperatures of the summer, air-conditioning is sorely required. One house of friends was not using air-conditioning since their own physiology reacted adversely to the cold air and caused problems with the skeletal frame and swellings of the joints. In the result, not only was a physiological problem manifesting, but no relief was forthcoming from friends, and family, or any other quarter for that matter, for one reason or another.

Homeopathy treatment was also tried but it did not work.

Given the facts of the situation, a quick solution was required and given the seniority of the person, the health issues had already caused significant psychological turmoil, the problems having carried on for weeks at end.

Since a quick solution was required (within minutes), the issue was studied only from that perspective.

It is evident that currently the Cancer-Capricorn axis is seriously afflicted with highly inimical planets in a situation of a standoff. Cancer/ Karka Rashi is the heart or the thoracic cavity of the Kalapurusha or the Cosmic Man and the station of transit Rahu in Cancer can cause issues in this area of the body.

When Rahu creates problems, diagnosis is difficult, or the treatment does not work; the ambiguity and the enigma of the Nodes makes them and their working difficult to understand. Also Rahu is traditionally associated with breathing problems because when his neck was cut off, so was the respiratory tract. All these indications showed that the problem was rooted in Rahu.

What made this certain was that the natal Moon sign of the native was one of Cancer of Capricorn. With Mars and Ketu in Capricorn, in aspect with Rahu, and Mars and Rahu being highly inimical to each other, the problem was purely a transient one and caused by the opposition of malefic planets.

It is also to be noted that when a detailed study of health or physiological states is done from the natal horoscope, it is always from the natal Moon, as Chandra is the natural significator for the health and physiology of the person. In fact, this is one of the dominant roles of the Moon-sign chart in the Vedic horoscope.

Two remedies were given. One, an appropriate Mantra to pacify Rahu. On the same evening, the malefic reacted briefly and the situation became acute for a brief while. Soon afterwards, a simple anti-allergic medicine was taken, and sleep followed. The breathing problem practically disappeared and the bouts of coughing etc. were greatly reduced. By comparison, they ceased to trouble the person. The work in the household was still continuing and the person was advised to keep away from the areas where work was continuing to try and void triggering the allergic reaction.

Two, Monday was at hand soon and on Monday, the day of lord Shiva, a compressed form of the Mrityunjaya Mantra was given. With these two remedies, the person recovered at a miraculous rate. At their own choice, all the medication was discontinued immediately given the sensitive constitution of the person, including homeopathic medicine.

In this case, the problem lay elsewhere.

While modern (and perhaps traditional) medicine on the one hand and spiritual-cultural-esoteric-religious disciplines work in different reference frames, and one ought not be and cannot be, a substitute for the other, this case is an illustration of how, despite all the advances in modern medicine, there are occasions when very real, and palpable results are obtained, without more, from a metaphysical system such as Vedic astrology.
