JZ Flowers mover into their brand new, state of the art packhouse on 22nd February. Here's an internal shot showing what the facility was built for.

We'll get our resident photographer Les Stubbs to call in later this month to take some wide angle shots that will really do the building justice. The pictures will be posted on our flickr site as usual http://www.flickr.com/photos/hobsonandporter/collections/

We dropped in to J Z Flowers to see how they were getting on. Site manager Dave Taylor and Kevin Fountain of Cambridge HOK (pictured) were preparing for their weekly subcontractors meeting. We asked Dave to explain the benefits of these weekly meetings.

"Basically we all get together, work out what we achieved last week and what we need to get done next week. It gives a chance for all the trades, whether employed by H&P, or working directly for the client, like Kevin, to find out how they can work together to help the project run to time. You call it "Last Planner", I call it common sense.

So how are all the various trades performing? Dave only has positive things to say. "Beelby's are doing the hot and cold water, working through Aircool, and they are performing well. TLI Omega are doing a great job on the dividing walls and decorative panels. And obviously Kevin and myself are getting on well (as he's standing next to me!)"

Dave's 10.00 am meeting is fast approaching, and subbies are starting to arrive. We'll go back next month to find out how he got on trying to get rid of all that site waste.

The shell is now complete, and we have started on the dock levellers. External groundworks are arounf 80% completed. Inside the building the insulated walls are also around 80% completed. Mechanical and electrical works are 40% complete. Underfloor heating works started today. The first fix of the sprinkler system is underway. This work is being carried out by Hall and Kay

New flooring solution pays dividends

H&P estimating assistant Ben Thorn paid a vist to site to find out how a new flooring soultion had helped to reduce our programme of works by a full two weeks. The system is called Laser Screed and was installed by Couldwell's who are working with H&P for the first time and doing a good job by all accounts. Couldwells used the Somero SXP X-treme Platform Laser Screed machine. This state-of-the-art fully automated computer controlled Laser Screed is used for the larger projects where higher floor tolerances and faster production rates are required. The SXP can lay in excess of 600m2 per hour, making it one of the fastest and most accurate laser screeds ever produced. For further info vist www.ccf.me.uk

Structural steel work is now completed, Pocklington Steel have done an excellent job.
65% of the roof is on and completion will be next Wednesday (unless we have more rain as we did yesterday!)
Wall panels have commenced; floor preparation is ongoing as internal drainage draws to an end, completion of the concrete to the floor slab will be on Friday 14th August.
A water attenuation lagoon has been made and external drainage is to start on Monday 10th August.

Reusing materials reduces CO2 emissions

As part of the construction process over 4,000 tonnes of sand was reused. This removed the need for quarrying / extraction and processing before delivery to the site. 6,000 tonnes of site topsoil has been carefully stripped, retained and stored on site rather than removed. Where it has not been possible to reuse existing materials from the site the materials were sourced from nearby quarries at Riplingham (located only eight miles from the site). The changes in material use and specification have already resulted in the elimination of 1,250 HGV vehicle movements and around 1,500 smaller vehicle movements. As part of our commitment to reduce costs and CO2 we have joined Earth Exchange, a website that puts you in touch with actual construction sites that can make use of your surplus materials, or with those that can make up your materials shortfalls. Membership is free for a limited period, so get signed up – the more firms that are registered in the region the more opportunities we’ll have to reuse and recycle locally.

Steelwork now almost complete, roof works commencing, also fire protection (employing Demon)

Foundations are complete, and we are installing the pre-cast concrete floor at mezzanine level

Site Managers Weekly Report

All is currently progressing well on site, with 50% of the structural steelwork now completed. We are using Pocklington Steel, who have performed excellently so far. Masonry work started last Wednesday, with Duncan and Malcolm from Squareline doing their usual good work. Contrac Cladding are due to start the roof works on Monday. Foundation works are 80% completed. Jelle from J Z Flowers visited the site on Saturday and was impressed at how smoothly the works are progressing.
