Spotify to provide ongoing global marketing support to further amplify rising artists’ voices across borders to over 178 markets

SEOUL – May 18, 2021: Spotify, the world’s most popular audio streaming subscription service, announced the launch of the RADAR artists collaboration with K-pop artist AleXa and Kuwaiti-Saudi artist Bader AlShuaibi.

This is the first time in Spotify’s history in which a RADAR KOREA artist and RADAR MENA artist collaborated, and the first time a RADAR KOREA artist is participating in a cross-border collaboration project on Spotify.

Throughout the project, Spotify’s first RADAR KOREA artist AleXa is joining forces with RADAR MENA artist Bader AlShuaibi on a new collaborative single ‘Is It On’ to be released on May 21st, for listeners from both regions and beyond. ‘Is It On’ is a K-pop style track with high energy based on a distinctive reggaeton rhythm with a fresh melody line and a catchy lead sound and a drop.

Spotify has been preparing for the RADAR collaboration for over a year. While the track will be fully owned by both artists’ labels, Spotify oversaw the project spanning from connecting the two for the project to marketing support. The support includes the cost of production. on-platform promotion, a billboard placement in New York Times Square as well as social media support to maximize exposure and drive listenership globally.

On Spotify, there has been a 140% year-on-year increase in K-pop consumption from January 2020 to January 2021 in the MENA region. In particular, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Morocco, Egypt and Qatar are currently the top five MENA countries streaming K-pop music. With K-pop being a dominant genre in the MENA region, the new RADAR collaboration aims to amplify music with the potential to crossover. The collaboration - based on Spotify’s RADAR program - will ultimately give both artists global exposure and help them expand their audiences across borders to over 178 markets.

The RADAR program is Spotify’s global artist program, exclusively designed to help emerging artists around the world reach the next stage in their careers and strengthen their connection to listeners. Spotify provides artists taking part in RADAR with resources and access to integral marketing opportunities to help them boost their careers, in addition to expanded reach and exposure.

RADAR KOREA - showcasing rising artists from the homeground of K-pop - officially launched in August 2020, with AleXa being the first featured artist. She was also the second most streamed RADAR KOREA artist globally in 2020. And RADAR MENA artist Bader AlShuaibi is one of the most well-respected rising artists in Kuwait and the Middle East, also known as the future of Arabic Pop.

What is The Recording Academy / GRAMMYs Awards?

The Recording Academy is formally known as NARAS or National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. It has exclusive members consisting of music industry professionals like performers, executives, producers, and recording engineers. And they are all in-charge of recognizing outstanding achievements in the music industry, to be announced at The Grammy Awards.

BTS’ first encounter with The Recording Academy was in February 2019 where they presented the R&B Album of the Year Award to musician H.E.R. And just a few months after, The Recording Academy invited them to become voting members of the organization including BIGHIT MUSIC’s CEO, Bang Si Hyuk. This is a huge honor for a KPOP boy band!

Taking Little Steps to a GRAMMY Award

BTS’ have solidified their place in the global music industry with numerous awards and milestones in their career. After being part of The Recording Academy in 2019, BTS was able to perform at a collaboration stage with Lil Nas X and many more in 2020 GRAMMYs. Then that same year, they got their first ever GRAMMY nomination! And finally in 2021 GRAMMY Awards, they were able to showcase their amazing performing prowess through their best-selling song “Dynamite” at a rooftop in Seoul, South Korea.

Sadly, BTS did not won the Best Pop Duo/Group Grammy Award, which naturally made ARMYs, casual audiences and even BTS themselves disappointed. While people feel that BTS deserve it better, it seems that The Recording Academy has a different opinion. After the situation have toned down, ARMYs cheered each other up and are still hopeful for the next GRAMMY opportunity for BTS. BTS’s "Run BTS!" will collaborate with Na PD's "The Game Caterers" on a Special Variety Show

It has been revealed that the "Run BTS!" BTS's variety show and of "The Game Caterers" have a partnership.

The production teams of The Game Caterers and Run BTS! shared their upcoming collaboration and revealed that they had been preparing for this collaboration content for a long time and announced that they had finished filming together.

South Korean producing director Na Young Suk, popularly known as Na PD's show "The Game Caterers" of tvN on business trips to play various games. BTS will challenge themselves to the different games The Game Caterers has to offer and show their synergy with Na Young Suk. It is the first such collaboration between the two parties.

When and where to watch Run BTS! and Na PD's variety special?

The entire collaboration series will have a total of four episodes, and the first episode will air on Run BTS! via Naver V LIVE and Weverse on May 4. The next episode will air on tvN channel and the official YouTube of The Game Caterers on May 7.

The entire variety special will air over two weeks in a similar format.

K-POP is Not Just Local Music Industry But Its Global Music Culture

When do you think KPOP started being popular worldwide? During the first generation of KPOP, which was around 1990s to early 2000s, you can already see its potential for global success. There are more solo artists during this time, like BoA and Rain. And also groups such as H.O.T., Shinhwa, S.E.S., Sech Kies, and Seo Taiji and Boys who paved the way for more artists to be more flexible in their music. They basically introduced Western-style pop into the South Korean culture.

The second generation of KPOP started around 2003, which may be different from what fans know happened around 2009 to 2010. The active groups are TVXQ, BigBang, Wonder Girls, Super Junior, 2PM and many more who are more popular in their neighboring countries such as Japan and China. KPOP idols now have more opportunities of concerts and fanmeetings outside their country. This is also the time when Wonder Girls’ song “Nobody” became a hit not only in Asia, but also in America.

And now the current KPOP generation is composed of groups like BTS, EXO, Blackpink, TWICE, Red Velvet, Seventeen, and a whole lot more new groups. KPOP Conventions in America, Europe and Asia were held and these idol groups were present to perform Korean songs in front of foreign audiences. But we can’t miss that undeniably, BTS has conquered the world with their music. They don’t just perform, but they also receive awards from huge American award shows like BBMA and AMA.

As they say, music is a universal language. Even if you don’t understand the lyrics, you can have a connection to it. This is probably the reason why KPOP is not just local, but also global. With this, entertainment companies wanted to expand their market through global auditions. They are open for foreign trainees, so they can have bigger markets.

One example is the UnionWave Entertainment, which just started last 2018. They aim to have a KPOP group that will market not just Asia, but also Europe. The company is originally from Switzerland and they are accepting European trainees. And in 2020, they plan to debut a girl group with a mix of both countries.

Actually, there are already a lot of KPOP groups with diverse nationalities, but they’re mostly Asians. Now, UnionWave Entertainment might be the first to have trainees from Europe that can break into the KPOP scene. And hopefully, this will be another first step into a new KPOP culture.

Netflix has officially announced the production of "Kingdom: Ashin of the North", a special extension episode of the Kingdom series that will star Jun Ji Hyun, who will also be seen starring in the drama Jiri Mountain.

BIGBANG's G-Dragon may be returning to the stage soon. He is working on New Music.

OSEN reported on November 2 that BIGBANG's G-Dragon is currently making preparations for his comeback with his new solo album.

Given this, YG commented to fans the following in a statement:

“It is true that G-Dragon is working on new music.”

G-Dragon’s last solo album was in 2017, while BIGBANG’s latest group release was the single “Flower Road” in 2018. BIGBANG was originally scheduled to restart group activities with Coachella in April this year, but plans fell through when the event was cancelled due to COVID-19.

BTS's Jimin has once again achieved the title of King of Kpop 2020 for the second consecutive year in King Choice . With 12,568,794 votes he surpassed BIGBANG's G-Dragon and BTS's Jungkook.

He snatched first place in King Choice's '2020 King of K-pop' voting poll proving his dignity, impact and popularity as a top class idol. King Choice is well known as the largest international K-pop voting website.

BTS Jimin is well known for his position as one of the main dancer and the lead vocalist in BTS. In the past, Jimin attended Just Dance Academy to learned popping and locking dance before moving to Busan High School of Arts to studied contemporary dance.

Jimin was a top student in the modern dance department there. Jimin is also known as one of BTS most formidable dancers.

Aespa X Vocaloid - New K-pop girl group Aespa features human and virtual members - Says SM Entertainment

Lee Soo Man announced AESPA will combine both real-world members and avatar (digital) members, making K-Pop’s first vocaloid X human group.

SM Entertainment and Lee Soo Man were invited to speak at the 2020 WCIF (World Cultural Industry Forum), where Lee Soo Man revealed SM Entertainment’s newest plan for the “aespa Universe”, which would combine real-life members (such as Winter and Karina) with digital world members.

While he initially thought such an idea wouldn’t be possible in the entertainment industry, he then decided that it would be possible to include the idea of celebrities and avatars with aespa. The two entities would be used to support each other in a new revolutionary idea.

Within aespa, there are real-world members and virtual-world members. The members of the real and virtual works don’t ask one another to do something specific, but they are able to interact and communicate as [the virtual members] have AI brains.

They are able to talk to each other and help each other, become friends and share info.

They will also eventually be able to enter each others’ worlds, and interact with each other by hosting live sessions on social media, all of which hasn’t existed up until now.

SM Entertainment also teased how aespa would exist in the real and virtual world at the event.

One thing that was also teased during the virtual announcement were some of the members of aespa. While Karina and Winter were already revealed, the preview for aespa’s digital world also included Ningning and Aeri. It is unknown if these four members will be the only ones in aespa, if there will be more members revealed later, or even added later similar to NCT.

While the real world members will perform on real stages, the virtual members will also have their own separate activities digitally.

Excited for more AESPA content? SM Entertainment has revealed the third member of its new girl group—meet Ningning! Here’s everything we know about her so far.

Ningning joins previously introduced members Winter and Karina in their mystical fantasy land. Fans think this may be the world in which aespa’s AI counterparts “live”.

Her big, beautiful eyes stand out immediately. The rest of her youthful features are equally doll-like, too, which is fitting given that Ningning once revealed she likes dolls.

Some fans are already comparing Ningning’s visuals to Weki Meki‘s Doyeon…

… and TWICE‘s Nayeon.

Luckily for eager fans, Ningning is the aespa member we know most about so far because she’s the only one who was introduced under the company’s pre-debut project group, SM Rookies.

Ningning is Chinese, making her the first non-Korean member of aespa to be revealed. Currently 18 years old (international age) and fluent in Korean as well as Mandarin, she was born in Harbin, China on October 23, 2002. Her birth name is Ning Yizhuo, and her Korean name is Jeo Yetak.

Ningning was introduced as an SM Rookies member in September 2016, shortly after she began training at the company four to five years ago. Her specialty has always been singing, so many fans believe she could be aespa’s main vocalist. On the musical front, she’s also a keen pianist.

Her favorite group is reportedly NCT, and some of her favorite SM Entertainment artist songs include NCT’s “Cherry Bomb”, Red Velvet‘s “Peek-a-Boo”, Super Junior‘s “Black Suit”, and Girls’ Generation‘s “Holiday”.

Alongside her labelmates, she’s also known to be a fan of BLACKPINK‘s Jennie and the group’s song “As If It’s Your Last”. Coincidentally, Ningning’s visuals have also been compared to Jennie’s!

It’s fitting that Ningning is an NCTzen, since she once appeared on the same show as NCT’s Chenle—China’s Let’s Sing Kids.

And singing isn’t her only talent. Her favorite school subject is art, and before becoming a K-Pop trainee, she dreamed of becoming a painter. Some of her other favorite things include dolls, the colors red and yellow, watermelons and strawberries, Coca Cola, orange juice, Mulan, horror movies, and dogs.

Judging by a recent SM Entertainment press conference, aespa is currently rumored to have four members. Stay tuned for more information on the potential final member when she’s revealed tomorrow!
