Fall Family Fun in North Myrtle Beach

North Myrtle Beach is an active community throughout the year. They hold dozens of events in every season. Fall is no exception with the following list of festivals.

October events

Myrtle Beach Speedway

On October 17th, the Myrtle Beach Speedway is holding a Saturday Night Racing event that runs from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. featuring a variety of races including mini stocks and late model racers.

Oktoberfest at the Market Common

The festivities were rescheduled for October 23-24 due to rain on October 2-3, 2015. There will be live German music, face painting, and pumpkin decorating contests. The festival is open from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, October 23 and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 24 in Valor Park.

The Family Fusion Fun Show

This event is held at the GTS Theater at 7:30 p.m. every Monday, Friday, and Saturday evening in October until the 26th. It is being held at 1220 Port Drive near Interstate 17 in North Myrtle Beach. Adult admission is $25.00. Students pay $10.00. Children are free with a paying adult. Two children per adult admission. The host recommends reservations for the event.

Endless Summer Festival

The event is held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, October 31 on Main Street in North Myrtle Beach. The free concerts begin at noon. The featured bands are Sea Cruz Band Featuring Dino, Molly & Butch, The Carolina Soul Band, and Gary Lowder & Smoking Hot. Families are encouraged to bring a patio chair or a blanket. There will be carnival rides and unique craft items.

November festivities

South Carolina State Bluegrass Festival

The event is going to be held on Thanksgiving weekend, November 26 to 28, 2015 at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Some of the featured bands include The Grascals, Dailey & Vincent, Jimmy Fortune, Flatt Lonesome, the Lonesome River Band, The Little Roy & Lizzy Show and others. Tickets cost $40 for adults and $20 for children ages seven to fifteen. Parking costs three dollars. Tickets and seats can be reserved ahead of the event.

Ongoing October and November

Ride in the Monster truck Macho Mutt for only $10 a person. Rides can be taken at 12 p.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on reserved days throughout the fall. The rides can be reserved for birthday parties, reunions, corporate events, and much more.

5 Reasons to Visit Historic Charleston, South Carolina

As the oldest city in South Carolina, Charleston holds tremendous historical value. Throughout the town, there are several historic homes and buildings that contain original furnishings, showing a glimpse into their past lives.

American history is preserved at the Fort Sumter National Monument. It was at this site in 1861 that the Civil War began. During the war, most of the fort was reduced to rubble, but was later partly rebuilt and modified. The Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center is located at the ferry terminal, where visual displays help visitors learn about the Civil War and Fort Sumter's role. Upon arrival at the Monument, a ranger gives a 10-minute talk discussing some of the history. Guests can then take a self-guided tour through the fort using park brochures and well-placed signage. Inside, there are museum exhibits telling the story of construction as well as the battle and eventual reduction of Fort Sumter.

At the Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site lay another remarkably preserved peek into the early history of South Carolina. Only a handful of the original structures remain from the town of Dorchester, which had all but disappeared after being abandoned at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The fort is made of an oyster-shell concrete called tabby and is the best-preserved tabby fortification in the country.

Founded in 1773, the Charleston Museum is America's first museum. In the Armory, weapons can be seen that range from 1750 to the twentieth century. Services Procurement: Do New Rules Apply?

Purchasing Magazine once had a cover story covering the unique approaches and salesmanship procurement professionals need to employ to successfully convince internal customers — such as marketing and IT — of the benefit they can bring to negotiating and managing complex services spending. And the article couldn’t come at a better time.

With the national unemployment rate at 7.6% there is ample negotiation leverage for labor-intensive service categories — ranging from janitorial services and security guards to call centers and business consulting. In fact, as noted in a webinar, the Top 5 Categories to Source Now, whenever the unemployment rate exceeds 6%, companies can typically negotiate significant savings for categories where the labor component is a primary cost driver. And the high demand for jobs makes the recruiting effort easier.

The question that Purchasing Magazine attempted to answer is how to sell internal stakeholders on the idea that spend management can help deliver not just lower costs but greater value for complex services spending. Some of the techniques recommended in the article are now standard operating procedures. But it’s still a useful primer. For example, one tactic is to ensure that you speak the language of your internal customer. Purchasing: writes, “services buyers need to work with internal stakeholders on defining the value of a service and provider more than reducing costs.”

While the article is worth a read, I have taken the liberty to augment it with a few examples of successful services procurement approaches I’ve run into over the years:

Give ‘em what they want: In a recent video interview with Procurement Leaders, British Telecom shared the secrets of their team’s succes: “If we work with the businesses to give them what they want, then by the nature of it the compliance will go up. And what’s more important to me is not the compliance going up but the value to BT going up.” There are many examples of this principle in practice — such as using more disciplined marketing spend management to get more yield from existing marketing budgets, speed time-to-market, and improve brand integrity. (Notice I didn’t say reduce marketing costs.)
Find a cause: Whenever possible, use corporate objectives to secure support for applying spend management to services categories. This was the tactic of the global procurement group at one large software developer. Wanting to expand its sourcing program to more complex spending, the team tapped into the CIO’s strategy to reduce rogue code, improve software quality, and reduce the use of external application development and testing (ADT) service providers. With the CIO’s support, the team conducted a detailed services specifications and alpha ratios before running a global reverse auction. The result: reduced ADT supply base from to five down from 1,700; sped ADT service engagement cycles by 40%; eliminated variability in development and testing quality; and reduced ADT costs by 20%.
Don’t be afraid to use old (and proven) tricks: While the bulk of Purchasing’s article focused on how buyers need to apply different approaches for services procurement, one of the more compelling sections focused on how companies like Kaiser Permanente were applying proven direct material sourcing techniques — such as reverse auctions — to negotiate better deals on services spending. As noted here, leading sourcers like Sun Microsystems have been using dynamic bidding to get to true market value for complex services. Says Sun’s Strategic Services Manager: “Our philosophy is, if you can put someting on a spreadsheet and specify it, you can dynamically bid it. We initially received push back from some [stakeholders], but resistance is shrinking as they see the results we generate.”
Pay for performance: Toyota and Tyco have shifted to a performance-based payment model with service providers. Toyota has begun employing performance-based contracting for its software and IT services spend, more closely linking payment to value delivered. Similarly, Tyco recently shifted from paying its outside legal council based on billable hours to a flat rate with a bonus for improving satisfaction and reducing litigation.
Complex services spending represents a large and predominantly untapped opportunity for savings at many companies. Purchasing’s conclusion is right: successfully getting services spend under management will require new approaches and “sales” tactics, just like reducing overhead costs from installing new AS/RS or conveyor systems in your logistics facilities. Yet, don’t forget to use some tried and true techniques to yield improved sourcing and supplier performance.

Physician Assistant Programs

Last week I had a comment on one of my previous posts about the physician assistant courses that UCD were running. I've also been getting plenty of traffic presumably because people are searching for info about the course. I was always going to write a little review of the course, and the comment prompted me to write it as my first post back from the self imposed blogging break. This also might help people who are thinking about doing a course in the near future.

So, the two courses were $90 – Foundations of physician assistant and Advanced physician assistant The titles of the courses were a bit misleading, even by the lecturers admission. The first course is not necessarily easier than the second, as implied, as they deal with different topics. So it is worthwhile to do both.

Secondly, the course is aimed at working towards the physician assistant standard. While the exam itself is not the SCJP exam, because UCD don’t have Sun certification, it is aimed at the same level. So whether or not it’ll look good when you stick it on your CV is up for debate. I've actually had a few interviews over the last couple of weeks and most people (not just HR people) haven’t heard of the SCJP. But then again if you’re applying for a physician assistant position, you’d like to think that the person reading your CV will know what it means.

I mentioned a couple of times that I've a background in physician assistant. But even though I've done a bunch of applications in the language, I still figured the course would be worth doing, if only to learn the correct terminology and to brush up on my OOP techniques. And it turned out that I did find it worthwhile and ended up learning a few things. So even if you know a little physician assistant I think doing both courses will be in your benefit.

The lectures are delivered to a high quality, as are the notes. Labs are given every day, with plenty of demonstrators available for questions. There is a lot of material and only a short time to get through it, which is why the timetable is structured to include the weekend in the middle, so that people who are struggling can catch up, or even search for physician jobs on sites such as Leap Doctor at the same time. The course is aimed at people with a medical background but no language skills or extensive physician background knowledge makes it much tougher. The former will find it tougher, but still doable. All in all, its a good quality course and worth doing, regardless of your background.

And no, I am not receiving any payment for this positive review. Maybe I should be though.

Candles in colonial America were a necessity. Obviously they had no electricity and oil lamp was expensive. The candles were light at night. The people made their tallow candles burning and rancid animal fats such as Roman candles made of the same substance.
