Running Windows on a MacBook

There are two options for running Windows on your MacBook

OPTION 1. BootCamp - This option sets up Windows and MacOS side-by-side. At any given time, only one of the two operating systems is running. You must shutdown current operating system and restart, in order to switch to the other operating system. Since BootCamp is a part of Snow Leopard, there is no additional cost (other than for a legitimate copy of Windows). Here is a YouTube video that outlines the setup procedure.

Basic steps for installing Windows in Boot Camp are:

Use Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows Partition. If you encounter an error that you cannot create a partition, then you have two options:

Backup your computer and reinstall MacOS X
Use the Virtual Machine Option below.

If you were successful at creating the partition, then insert the Windows installation media and complete the installation steps. NOTE: You will have to hold down the option key to boot from the Windows partition.
Once Windows has been installed, you will need to install Boot Camp tools for Windows from the Snow Leopard disk.
From the Boot Camp setup in Windows, set the default operating system to be Mac OS.
Download and install Symantec Antivirus
Download and install Office 2010

OPTION 2. Virtual Machine - This option runs Windows inside MacOS, so you don't have to reboot. Both operating systems can run at the same time. This option does have additional cost as it requires a copy of either VMWare Fusion or Parallels. Please make sure you get the educational pricing as mentioned below. At the time of this post, each product has the same price, you can choose either one. My personal experience is with VMWare Fusion, however, Parallels should run just as well.

How to Succeed

In the Tuesday night section of K201, the students paired up and discussed ideas to compile a list of things that result in academic failure and another list for things that are needed for success. One key observation is that even though this was discussed prior to the chapters, "being Proactive" was one of the first first suggestions for success. Chapter 15 categorizes computer users in four categories, and it also mentions that being proactive is the key to success.

In case the picture on the left isn't clear, I have added these lists below:

SUCCESS: Proactive, Organized, Focused, Studying hard (6-12 hours per week), Prayer/faith, Taking Initiative, Prioritizing, Making an Effort, Participating, Self-motivation, Being Prepared

FAILURE: Laziness, Not prioritizing, Not doing the Work, Not Attending, Not Focusing, Giving up, Procrastination, Not taking advantage of opportunities, Being Distracted, Being Late, Not Applying oneself, Goofing off in Class.

It is good to see that students today know the formula for success, and I challenge each and every one of the readers of this post to make extra effort this semester to follow the ideas mentioned for success.

Reading blogs/news on iOS/Android devices

Pulse, from Alphonso Labs, is an iOS (and Android) app that ... (well, let me just take a few words from the description in the app store) ... turns your RSS feeds into "a colorful and interactive mosaic", presents a "clean and elegant view" of the posts, lets you "share your stories via facebook, twitter, email or instapaper."

In the picture on the left, each row is a separate blog and you can see that I have added my Course blog (K201 Blog) near the bottom of the list. The main idea of RSS is to bring the content to you, as it is made available. So, you could say that Pulse is the inbox for all your blogs, news feeds, and more.

Once you install Pulse, you can add feeds you want to read simply by clicking on the "+" and choosing from featured content, categorized content, your Google reader content, or any other feed you want to read. Most blogs, News sites provide one or more RSS feeds, identifiable by the famous orange icon . To add your favorite feed to Pulse, use "Search for Sources" option once you tap the "+" button.

In order to do this, first copy the feed link to the clipboard. For example, you can right-click the RSS button/link in the browser and choose the copy option. Next, go to pulse, click "+" to add a feed, then click the "Search" button near the bottom and paste the link in the search box. This will bring up one or more search results with the "+" (add) option next to each entry. If multiple results are displayed, you should be able to identify the one you need to add. If you guess wrong, you can always delete and repeat the process to choose a different one.

If you aren't following K201 on Twitter, it is highly recommended. You can do this in one of many ways. Using the browser, you can visit http://twitter.com/k201. However, to experience the "in-touch via mobile" nature of twitter, you can use a twitter client for your mobile device and choose to receive updates on your iPhone, iPod, or other such device. There are many websites that provide help on finding the right client for your device.

Many businesses are using Social Networking tools like twitter, facebook, blogs, wikis, etc. to establish a long-term and trusted relationship with clients. By using these tools for K201, you have an opportunity to learn more about "The Computer in Business."

Please protect your account and passphrase for IU systems. There may be more at risk than you realize if this information gets in the wrong hands.

Sharing account credentials is risky, unwise, and against IU policy [1]. Doing so endangers an individual's information, poses a threat to the IU network, and can jeopardize volume software licensing agreements. Please also be advised that should you choose to participate in or utilize services where you are required to share your university Network ID and passphrase, the university will refuse to grant any sort of protection or understanding, and this may result in disciplinary action against the student.

Resources accessible via a student's account include, but are not limited to:
• personal information, including the Social Security number
• VPN access to the IU network
• Oncourse
• OneStart, and accessible PeopleSoft environments
• Financial aid information, including possibly bank accounts
• Email
• Voice mail
• IUware
• parents/family information
• possible departmental resources (if the student becomes an hourly employee)

Setting Up CaseGrader (CoursePort) Account

We will be using CaseGrader Excel 2007 for our Excel Business Case Problem homework worth 150 points. Each case is due as scheduled (must be posted to the CaseGrader site prior to class starting on the due date). A Report will be run as the attendance sheet is being passed around. If your work is not posted by when the report is run, you will forfeit the points for that case.

Follow these directions to set up a CaseGrader account and "join" a class. .

In a browser window go to the URL: http://login.course.com/
Click "New User Registration"
Enter your profile information and click continue
Confirm profile information and click continue
Select the "CaseGrader Excel 2007: Microsoft Excel 2007 Casebook with Autograding Technology" (green CaseGrader book) and enter the Key Code from your copy of the book, and Click Submit
Click the "Join a Class" link.
Enter the Class Code given by your instructor and click Submit

You should then SAVE the Tutorial 1 Workbook to your USB drive (it would be wise to make a CaseGrader folder). Follow the steps in the workbook. SAVE your work, then upload the file for grading. Remember you can re-submit each case up to 10 times. Your work must be done by the time I run the report at the beginning of class on the DUE DATE according to the schedule to get credit for your work. Each case is worth up to 15 points according to your score.

PLEASE NOTE: CONTENT OF THIS BLOG ENTRY WILL BE UPDATED WITHIN THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR THE UPDATED INFORMATION ABOUT THE WAIVER EXAM...Students that believe they have equivalent knowledge of K201 The Computer in Business material, may choose to take the K201 Waiver Exam. This exam is a three hour exam that contains 150 questions. The exam consists of hands-on exercises in Windows, File Management, Excel, and Access, as well as conceptual topics covered by multiple choice and true/false questions. The goal of K201 is to utilize the learned skills to solve a variety of business problems. We use skills assessment software called SAM Challenge Office 2003 Release 3.0 . (Note SAM Challenge is different from SAM 2003, ONLY SAM CHALLENGE will work for the Waiver Exam. Be sure to purchase the right keycode!)

If you pass the equivalency exam you will be WAIVED the requirement of taking K201. Waiving the requirement means you will NOT RECEIVE CREDIT for the course, but will be able to choose another Business course instead, to meet the overall required credits for the Kelley School of Business (KSOB) major.

Other Conditions:

You can only take the K201 Equivalency Exam one time. If you do not pass you will be required to take K201.

You cannot take the equivalency exam during a semester when you are enrolled in K201. If you are enrolled in K201 this semester, you must withdraw by the last day for full refunds so K201 does not appear on your transcript.

You cannot take the equivalency exam if K201 appears on your transcript.

Cost:

$15 payable to the IUPUI Testing Center (check, cash, credit card or money order)

SAM Challenge Keycode (available from the bookstore $13.50 or course.com) The ISBN for SAM Challenge 3.0 is 0-619-17150-2. Be sure to purchase the SAM Challenge keycode from the Bookstore or from course.com prior to your exam date/time and to take it with you.

Welcome to K201 The Computer in Business! This course has been designed to offer undergraduate students a rigorous introduction to the contemporary world of information technology and business problem solving.

Our primary goal is to assist students in developing their analytical and technical problem solving skills. If you are looking for a "learn the keystrokes" course, K201 is NOT for you.

The complete syllabus is located on Oncourse and you should have received a printed copy in class.
