Spot The Signs of Canine Diabetes, Save Your Dog's Life

If you have a dog that suddenly develops a higher than normal thirst level or urination, it's important to keep a close eye for signs of diabetes.
Many people are unaware that diabetes in dogs is a serious and potentially fatal disease, but it can be prevented if the symptoms are recognised early.
Excessive drinking and urination are two of the first signs to be aware of.
Even the colour of the dog's urine can offer a tell tale sign as a symptom of diabetes mellitus and canine diabetes insipidus.
Sudden urination in the house should be referred to a vet for closer inspection.
Diabetes can be more common in older dogs and often this new habit of suddenly urinating in the house can lead owners to mistakenly believe the dog is simply showing signs of old age.
In actual fact, the onset of urination in the house can be a result of the dog drinking more, which in turn can be a symptom of canine diabetes itself.
Dogs suffering with diabetes can be prone to becoming dehydrated, particularly in hot weather.
Spotting The Symptoms of Diabetes in Dogs:
- Sudden weight gain
- Sudden excessive thirst
- Increase in panting and wanting to go outside to urinate
These three common diabetes pointers can be harmless, symptoms of nothing more than ageing. But if it is an early pre-curson to diabetes, spotting it early and getting it treated can very well save your dog's life.
K9 Magazine's Ryan O'Meara:
"Diabetes is killing more dogs than it should. Knowing how to spot the signs and working to ensure your dog's diet and weight are properly matched to their age, breed and lifestyle is something well worth talking to your vet about."
- Article distributed by petbuzz :: social media for pet brands.

How Can I Get My Dog To Stop Jumping The Fence?

A dog who is prepared, willing and able to jump a fence poses a real problem for us owners.
The thought of losing our dog this way or of our dog going on to do something that could cause problems, harm or upset for our neighbours or the general public could land us in hot water legally.
As one of the questions we've recently received from a K9 Magazine reader, we wanted to direct you to this excellent resource (How to dog proof your garden).
There is a two fold approach to curing the problem of the dog jumping the fence:
1. Behaviour modification - it's imperative to take this behaviour very, very seriously and to convey to the dog that jumping the fence (which is something many dogs will find to be a totally natural behaviour as they seek to explore what they consider to be THEIR environment - dogs do not understand boundaries as defined by the local authority housing planners!)
2. Make your home and garden as dog proof as you possibly can. Be prepared to make boundaries higher. Assume the unexpected (dogs can be very determined, particularly if frightened or stimulated).
Have a read of http://www.dogtips.co/dog-proof-home/ for the in depth guide.
How to stop your dog jumping the fence is not something you want to be searching for when it might be too late! Shutting the door before the horse has bolted is as good an analogy as any in this situation.

Ahh! How Do I Stop My Puppy's Destructive Chewing?

One of the most common puppy problems encountered by new dog owners is destructive chewing.
Thanks to our good friends over at DogTips.co, we can now provide some relief and assistance to anyone who's struggling with the problem of destructive chewing - particularly as it relates to puppies (cure puppy chewing).

Suddenly that cute new puppy has turned into a chewing monster; nothing is safe from his/her mouth. What is happening?

Puppies explore their world by means of their mouths. Chewing helps relieve the pain of teething and it is necessary for a dog’s physical and mental health. Chewing helps relieve tension and stress.

Since nature did not give dogs hands to use, their mouths are their source of exploration; their means to investigate new things, tastes, and it is a basic behavior instilled in dogs since the beginning of time.

Source...http://www.dogtips.co/cure-puppy-chewing/

Do I Need To Supplement My Dog's Food?

Many dog owners ask us whether they need to supplement their dog's food in order to attain a level of proper dog nutrition.
If you use a good quality meat-meal based food you usually do not have to supplement your dog's ration. In fact, it is very easy to throw the formulation of some of the specialty foods out of kilter if you play with supplements.
Unfortunately, adding a little bit of this and a little bit of that is a cultural mentality handed down from the time when pet foods weren't complete and needed supplementation. Breeders often advocate supplements and many send their clients home with long lists of additives - vitamins, minerals, dairy products, oils and other lotions and potions.

Many breeders will turn an absolutely deaf ear to entreaties from veterinarians or canine nutritionists who suggest a good basic ration and a minimum of supplementation.
Supplement supporters aren't usually thinking along behavioural lines and, since they themselves rarely have difficulty house-training their dogs, don't realize that not everyone is so knowledgeable and over-supplementation can easily produce loose stools and make good control difficult for the dog. Coat conditioners, for instance, can easily be withheld from the diet until the puppy is house-trained.
The puppy doesn't need them if he or she is eating a good quality food, and (in most breeds) the puppy coat has to grow out naturally anyway. Oils and people foods, especially those high in fat (like steak trimmings) easily "oil up" the intestines and in many cases cause stools to "slide out" quite unexpectedly.
Get more free articles on dog nutrition and invest in your dog's long-term health and wellbeing!

Growth in Pet Insurance Leaves Dog Owners Questioning Policies

Over the past 15 years there has been a rocket-like surge in the depth and availabilty of pet insurance policies in the UK. As pet owners are faced with more and more choices, so the pet insurance companies are faced with the challenge of making their policy stand out.
As a result, according to a new survey by K9 Magazine - a lifestyle magazine for dog owners - pet owners are often left confused and furstrated when it comes to understanding the fine print of each individual pet insurance policy.
One of the most common causes of frustration according to the survey, which spoke to 200 pet owners in the UK, is being unsure of whether a pet is covered for illness and injury for the duration of their life.

Lifetime pet insurance cover is where the policy protects the animal for all of its life. However, not all policies offer this and as those policies often have lower premiums, they can be attractive to pet owners who base their decisions on price first.
AJ Douglas, a PR rep for a Taxi software firm and someone who has recently researched pet insurance, commented:
"I found the sheer volume of policies on offer to be quite incredible. At first I felt this was a positive sign, but then I realised just how much attention had to be paid to what I can only describe as discreet clauses. Often, two policies would look almost identical and it was only when you really dig down that you see there are some massive differences in what is covered and how long it is covered."
K9 Magazine's survey showed that modern pet owners are more comitted to insuring their dogs than ever before, but they are calling for more transparency from insurers when it comes to up front information on the main / most important aspects of each policy.
Useful Link: BBC Watchdog show covering the topic of pet insurance
 —
Distributed by Mickel Anderz on behalf of petbuzz :: social media for pet brands.

British Dogs Searching for Dog Shampoo For Itchy Skin

Pet's need no longer suffer with the perils of unncomfortable scratching as a dog shampoo for itchy skin aims to soothe the coats of Britain's scratching pets. As recently covered in the UK's largest pet business directory, the dog shampoo for itchy skin from Perfect Pet Skin is a product that many dog owners will benefit from.
K9 Magazine recently discovered via an online test sample, that thousands of their readers were searching for information on how to stop dogs shedding.
More than 4,000 people have accessed K9 Magazine's tip sheet on dog shedding and vet nurses have claimed that more of their customers are seeking advice and information on products that help dogs with coat conditions.

Vets are keen to stress that an itching dog should first be examined for parasites and other skin conditions, but access to a specialist product designed to ease the skin from itching and irritation can help pets in the short term and over a longer period.
K9 Magazine's associate publisher, Charles Vincent:
"We're always keen to hear and observe what pet problems are troubling our readers. When we noticed just how many people were accessing our articles on dog skin care, particularly topics on dog shedding, we felt it would be important that all pet owners get access to quality information on various products and treatments for dog skin care. Obviously we always recommend dog owners speak with their vet who can access first hand information, but it's very important for our readers to get up to date information on what's out there in terms of products specially designed to assist with a wide variety of pet health problems."
K9 Magazine conducts regular reader surveys and monitors pet industry trends via one of the most popular dog related websites online.
Useful Link: To find out about any dog skin conditions
—
Distributed by Frances O'Haram on behalf of petbuzz :: social media for pet brands.

Dogs Pulling on Leads Tops Dog Owner Frustration

A recent observation by leading dog publication K9 Magazine has shown that dogs who pull on the lead are one of the main causes of dog owner stress. The magazine's website experienced a large volume of enquiries from owners desperate to cure this specific behavioural problem.
More than 53% of users of the site who accessed the dog training articles were interested in how to cure their dog pulling on the lead.
Charles Vincent, who is associate publisher of K9 Magazine comments:
"For a lot of owners, having a dog that pulls on the lead is actually quite a miserable experience. This is particularly true of older people or owners of very strong dogs. In fact, we've had people contact us who have explained that they get genuinely depressed at the idea of having to take their dog for a walk if they think it's going to be spent being pulled all over the place."

In some cases, dog owners have turned to professional dog training services such as Diamond Dog behaviour (a Durham dog trainer in the UK) in an effort to cure this upsetting behavioural trait.
 Facts:
 - 53% of K9Magazine.com users who accessed dog training material wanted information on curing pulling
 - 29% of visitors to pet business directory, PetFriendlyWorld.com, wanted information on hiring a professional dog trainer.
In the UK, there are more than 5m dogs. With more and more dog owners using online services to help them cure specific behavioural problems, Total Pet Publishing (publisher of K9 Magazine) monitors ongoing search trends and answer solutions from pet owners. Dog owners are increasingly the focus of media attention resulting from bad or dangerous behaviour. The UK Government recently announced it would not be following up plans to implement compulsory insurance for everyone who owns a dog.
—
Distributed by Almer Johanson on behalf of petbuzz :: social media for pet brands.

A new book claims man can take on some spectacularly successful life lessons from man's best friend.
Ryan O'Meara, dog trainer and publisher of K9 Magazine claims in his new book 'Clever Dog: Life Lessons From Man's Best Friend' that thinking like a dog can improve our happiness, prosperity, friendships and decision making abilities.
In arguably the greatest self-help book of all time written by the man who literally wrote the book on how to get more from life, relationships and careers, Dale Carnegie's 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' tantalisingly revealed a life lesson that deserves the attention of a more comprehensive study.

Carnegie's seminal work named the dog as "the greatest winner of friends the world has ever known".

The self-help guru then went on to say:

"Did you ever stop to think that a dog is the only animal that doesn't have to work for a living? A hen has to lay eggs, a cow has to give milk, and a canary has to sing. But a dog makes his living by giving you nothing but love.”

If one of the most illustrious self-help minds of the past century can spot the value of thinking and behaving in line with man's best friend, Ryan O'Meara has taken the concept on to the next level in this book which reveals the hidden secrets behind...

The dog's unique approach to conflict resolution. (learn to settle disputes favourably and without shedding blood).

The dog's incredible (world famous) abilities to endear themselves to people and other animals, with a mere wag of a tail. (how to win REAL friends for life).

How to the dog deploys unique mental techniques to cope with stress, illness and high pressure situations (how to be happier and healthier with positive mental attitude)

Identifying and understand pack dynamic and prosper (how to get ahead in life, career and become prosperous without hurting people)

How to survive when the odds are against it. (how to tough out the harshest of times and come out smiling)

Clever Dog examines the pivotal role dogs have played in the evolution of society, countries and culture. Did you know: had it not been for a dog, we may never have even heard about Alexander The Great?
The book is a fresh and innovative study of how man's best friend earned his name and, more importantly, how we can copy him to improve our mood, financial success, survival skills and ability to make more friends than we'd even know what to do with. In short, if you want to learn the secret to why the dog is the most loved animal on the planet, read this book.
Find out more / order the book Clever Dog: Life Lessons from Man's Best Friend by Ryan O'Meara - CLICK HERE.

Lifetime Pet Insurance Cover: Dog Owners Overlook Smallprint

British dog owners missing out on lifetime pet insurance cover : failing to read smallprint of pet insurance policies -
A recent study by leading dog publication K9 Magazine has revealed that 6 out of every 10 dog owners are unaware whether their dog is actually covered for life by the terms of their pet insurance policy.

The survey, which quizzed 100 dog owners who had purchased pet insurance policies in the past 12-months, asked whether or not they could say for certain that their dog was protected by the insurance for the duration of their natural life.
A staggering 60% admitted that they weren't sure and didn't check the policy smallprint when they purchased the pet insurance product.
K9 Magazine's associate publisher, Charles Vincent, believes this pattern is not unusual:
"With the advent of price comparison shopping sites, more and more people tend to be drawn purely to what they see as a bottom line price on insurance products - be they for their pets, cars, homes or even their own lives. The problems occur when people overlook glaring omissions in the product which can in turn lead to heartache down the line as they find that at the time when their pet is most in need of cover, their policy doesn't cater for it.
K9 Magazine has put together a simple, easy to follow tip sheet on buying lifelong pet insurance and understanding the benefits of lifetime pet insurance cover.
 —
Distributed by Stefan Kaymer on behalf of petbuzz :: social media for pet brands.

Can dog clubs solve behaviour problems such as fighting, wrecking the house, or attacking the Hoover? Frankly no, these problems need to be dealt with in your own home by an experienced behaviour advisor. Dogs never have ‘just the one’ problem, but often it is only one of many which drives owners mad, or proves to be expensive. If your dog has any behaviour problems, sort those out first, as training will not help.
Do dominant dogs benefit from training? Eventually, but how do you spot dominance in your dog? Most dogs will assume dominant behaviour if they feel the lack of leadership within the household. A good rule of thumb is a dog who won’t be groomed won’t be trained.
The reason for this is that superior or dominant dogs will not accept grooming from their inferiors. Should you find yourself in this position, get advice and sort out who makes the rules in your house. Dogs do not appreciate being in charge, this is your job, but they will take on the role if you refuse to.
What can you expect to learn at a Club? Walking on the lead without pulling, returning when called, sitting, lying down and staying when told to are the basic building blocks, and you can expect to learn these exercises first. Should competition work be your goal, you will need to find a specialist Club.
Should you simply want a well behaved pet, try a club which hosts The Kennel Club’s Good Citizen Scheme, as this means that the training should be well planned, follows a well thought out route and you get to earn certificates and rosettes along the way! It also means that the Club is listed with The Kennel Club, and that it has valid insurance. The latter is important, as should you have an accident, or you or your dog suffer injury, an Insurance claim will need to be made. Well trained Instructors will show you how to use play, food, body language and voice to train your dog, and never a check chain in sight!
Common dog training problems
In a recent survey, 89% of owners said they had turned to the Internet to help them succeed with puppy house training. Training a new dog to go to the toilet outdoors is one of the most common behaviour problems new owners encounter. Dog club won't solve this particular problem but some of the people who attend dog clubs will certainly be able to advise!
Article sponsors and resources:

Dog training Durham

Puppy paper training

Online dog training techniques

Dog tips

---
London / petbuzz / March 2011
Distributed by Robin Wiseacre on behalf of petbuzz :: social media for pet brands.

No Such Thing as a Hypoallergenic Dog Breed?

London / petbuzz / March 10, 2011 -- Ever since US president Obama signed his family up for a so-called hypoallergenic dog, the world has gone mad for information on dogs who don't shed, dogs who don't cause allergies, dogs who don't make people sneeze and dogs who don't leave hairs all over the place.
The reality is, however, there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog.
Associate publisher of K9 Magazine, Charles Vincent:
"One of the things we - as a specialist pet publishing business - noticed a huge increase of, was the sheer number of people who assumed that there are certain breeds which are hypo-allergenic. This simply isn't the case. Allergies to dogs are related to the skin more so than the fur, so unless someone has managed to create a skinless dog, then allergies can still be transmitted."
AJ Douglas, a PR rep for a Taxi software firm was one of the people who looked in to the so-called hypoallergenic dog breeds for his family.
"We saw all the talk about dogs that don't induce allergies in children and thought it would be a great introduction to dog ownership. However, we were glad to come across K9 Magazine's advice on the subject which explained that there is really no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog. This is important for people to know otherwise I think many people could end up with dogs believing them to be totally allergy free, only to learn the truth later that there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog. In fact, we felt many breeds were being actively promoted as allergy free and this is simply untrue.
Charles Vincent is keen to stress that there is great advantages to using information to learn about everything from dog allergies to allergy free dog food.
"The key is to research from credible sources, then check, then double check. There is a lot of information out there, some of it good, some of it not so. But most importantly, dog owners shouldn't jump in to any decisions until they have really scoured as many sources as possible.
Distributed by Angelo Brittas on behalf of petbuzz :: social media for pet brands.

London, UK / Total Pet Publishing / March 7, 2011 -- A recent study by UK-based dog publication K9 Magazine has revealed that puppy house training is the most challenging thing to face new/novice dog owners.
The survey, which quizzed 100 owners of dogs under the age of 6-months, showed that the biggest stress new owners faced was in successfully training their dogs not to go to the toilet in the home.
Many dog owners get disheartened when house training their puppy when it appears the dog has mastered the habit only to seemingly go back to old ways a few days later.
K9 Magazine publisher, Ryan O'Meara, on the common problem faced by new dog owners:
"Often when someone gets a dog for the first time they've never actually been exposed to the messy side of dog ownership. It can sometimes take people a little while to get used to the idea of their beautiful home being soiled by this adorable bundle of joy that has recently come in to their lives. However, where problems take hold is when owners start to despair and worry that they will never be able to house train their puppy. Our survey showed that many owners started to question whether they'd done the right thing in actually getting a dog at the point where despair had taken hold and their fears set in about never having a house trained dog."
In the survey, 89% of owners said they had turned to the Internet to help them succeed with puppy house training.
84% said that articles such as K9 Magazine's 'puppy paper training' guide had helped to assure them that support was available and that small problems could easily be overcome.
Next to puppy house training, the biggest problem new dog owners complained about was puppy biting and puppy howling.
K9 Magazine has produced several tip sheets and reports on curing the most common puppy behaviour problems.

K9 Magazine has a great article for anyone looking for advice on how to paper train a new puppy (paper training is an effective route in to proper house training for puppies).
Extract:

Of all of the problems that dog owners face with raising a pet, the trouble involved in housebreaking stands out as the most common. Puppy paper training is a way to effectively begin the house training process.
In fact, of the tens of thousands of dogs that get trained by professional dog trainers in schools, 80 per cent of the owners of these dogs complain of housebreaking difficulties upon enrolment.
The majority of these people always, without a doubt, cannot seem to get their new dogs to use the bathroom in the right place. Yet, this problem can be overcome in a very short period of time just by understanding of how a puppy’s mind works.

Source: http://www.k9magazine.com/how-to-paper-train-your-puppy/

Clever Dog: New Book Celebrates Man's Best Friend

The dog is undeniably the most successful domestic animal of all time. He shares his life with us, has integrated into our society, and won the hearts and minds of millions of us. We call ourselves dog lovers because we do sincerely love them: they are fully-fledged members of our family, and we have elevated them to positions of authority in the human world. Assistance dogs, protection dogs, detection dogs, companion dogs ... they all enhance our lives immeasurably.

Clever Dog! is a compendium of life lessons we can learn from our dogs, based on a combination of what we know about them and – indeed – what we think we know about them. It examines and discusses a whole raft of canine skills and talents, and endeavours to piece together how and why the dog has enjoyed such immense success. It considers the dog as a problem solver, conflict resolver, and health asset; as decision maker and hero. And most of all, as a loyal and trusted friend.

It’s a fascinating insight into exactly why people love dogs, how this has affected breeding, and how dogs can still behave according to their original instincts. Those who need to develop leadership skills to get ahead in their career can learn a lot from dogs, as author O'Meara explains. Unlike with humans, once a dog establishes its position as leader, it holds that standing for life. O'Meara writes: There is nothing a dog would expect members of his pack to do that he hasn’t done himself. He is the leader because the pack trusts him.
If we can show those we ask to trust us that their trust is always going to be repaid, we’ll never have to prove ourselves.
It's been proven that dogs actively benefit human health, be it by relieving stress, providing a reason to exercise, or – breaking news at the moment – actually detecting different kinds of cancers in humans.
Humans can learn so many things about relationships from their dogs, and their happy-go-lucky, life-is-for-living approach.
He’s earned his epithet ‘Man’s best friend.’ In this book – the first of its kind – the aim is to examine how he did it and how we might emulate his talents in order to enjoy the same fortune and fulfilment in our own lives. Be happy and successful: learn from the best!
Topics covered in Clever Dog! include:
 The influential dog
 Leadership: the canine way
 How dogs benefit human health
 Problem-solving: the canine way
 Canine coping mechanisms
 The canine magician
The secret to a happy, healthy, well-behaved dog
 Communication: dog style
Dogs and the laws of attraction
The life lessons we can learn from dogs

About the author
Ryan O’Meara is the publisher of K9 Magazine and founder of the pet publishing company, K9 Media Ltd. A former professional dog trainer, Ryan has been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity of working in a hands-on capacity with more than 2000 dogs.
Since becoming a publisher, he has been actively involved in the launch of more than 400 pet-related websites, plus several magazines and books, and is the founder of the UK national dog adoption service http://www.dogsblog.com
Ryan is proud to be the UK’s Ambassador for World Animal Day, and regularly appears in the media discussing a wide range of dog-related topics.
 Where to Buy:
Find out more about Clever Dog HERE.
Veloce books are stocked by (or can be ordered from) bookshops by quoting the correct ISBN number.
How to House Train a Puppy

Very often, new puppy parents are stumped as to following the 'best' methods for house training a new puppy.
It is to the eternal frustration of many new puppy owners when they realise just how fond their new bundle of joy is of answering to calls of nature almost anywhere they feel like it. Your bedroom rug, the drawing room sofa, your Persian carpet; everything seems as good a place as any for your little pup to go cool his bladders on.
If you have just brought your pup home therefore, buckle up and get ready to save your upholstery and carpets by means of a simple house training method.

Now, here’s what housebreaking is all about. We humans tend to visit the loo when we feel like we must relieve ourselves, in one way or the other (thank god for that!). However, our pooches don’t have mother potty training them at the age of 1, telling them to take a crap at some fixed time on a shiny blue potty, and hence they tend to treat everything like a big ol’ lavatory. And that would be ok if we were dogs perhaps but most average human beings tend not to like that sort of thing. So what we have to do is potty train our doggies ourselves. And this training, to cut a long story short, is what we call ‘housebreaking’.

Now, facts first. Remember,
• No pup is able to keep himself from peeing or …well…relieving himself in some other form, till about 12 weeks of age. Your attempts at training your dog therefore must begin before this.
• Most puppies need to engage in bathroom related activities approximately 6-7 times a day
• Every time your dog seems to be following its tail rather slowly, and doing giddy rounds around a non-descriptive area put your shoes on to take it out cause it’s getting ready to relieve itself
• Take your dog out every time it has a meal because food immediately puts pressure on its colon and bladder.
The first lesson in housebreaking, ‘communicate with your dog’. Make sure you let your dog know that you don’t like him peeing all over the drawing room loud and clear. No there isn’t any need to use violence; just a loud “NO’ should do the trick. For best results catch him in the act so that he has no problem in associating the rebuke with the exact action.
Keep a keen eye on your pooch. As soon as he looks like he could do with a visit to the good old lavatory take him out. Once he relieves himself at the right place pat him to show how much you appreciate the fact that he didn’t pee all over your favorite rug. Give him a biscuit, and an appreciative nod and he’ll know.
See, dogs are like politicians, always eager to please. They will do anything to get cuddled and patted by their masters, thus it’s always easy to make them do things as per your requirements. You want him to pee outside? Show him how happy you are when he does so and he’ll do it always, you want him to crap every morning? Give him a friendly pat and he’ll bound off to be at it everyday. For your part make sure you know your dog’s habits, build your routine round his, try and find out what his usual urinating or defecating times are, is it after dinner? Before going to bed? Or right in the morning? Take him out accordingly.
Proper communication will ensure your pooch's proper health and your peace, and of course a clean bedroom rug.
Click for a full, in depth guide on house training a new puppy.

Dogs At Greater Risk Of Injury During Christmas - Survey Reveals Top Five Festive Hazards

Pine needles, glass decorations, left over food and an abundance of chocolate - this might sound like your average family Christmas but for dogs and their owners it can be an extremely hazardous environment. A survey carried out by Churchill Pet Insurance and dog rehoming website Dogsblog.com has revealed Christmas to be a hazardous time of year for dogs and their owners. With alcohol, bad weather, crowded homes and Christmas decorations contributing most to the problem.
Almost half of all dog owners admitted over-feeding their dog during the festive season. Normal table scraps, that are fine in moderation, soon mount up over Christmas and Boxing Day and dogs are often the grateful recipients of the overspill, but DogsBlog.com founder Ryan O'Meara warns against giving your dog anything extra from the table.

Ryan continues, “It can be hugely tempting to give into those big puppy dog eyes, but remember, the leftovers from Christmas aren't best suited to dogs. Find something equally tempting and rewarding to give your dog while you tuck into your Christmas dinner to keep their attentions focused.”
But no matter how disciplined dog owners during the holiday season, there is no legislating for the 31% of dogs that manage to help themselves. Dog owners are being advised to curb this problem by ensuring that their dog is banished from the kitchen when food is being prepared. The smell of the food coupled with the proximity of that turkey leg can often be too much temptation. Almost half of all dog owners surveyed reported (45%) that their dog has been involved in or caused an accident in the kitchen on Christmas day. Crowded kitchens and the extra food coupled with the excitement of Christmas dinner make the kitchen a dangerous environment for curious dogs.
Top Five Christmas Hazards

1) Chocolate
2) Antifreeze on the ground
3) Pine needles
4) Glass decorations
5) Crowded kitchens
But the kitchen isn't the only cause for concern during Christmas. 81% percent of dog owners that participated in the survey reported that their dog had destroyed at least one Christmas present. A similar amount (79%) said that they avoided putting up a real Christmas tree due to the potential for injury. Almost half of those that did favour a real Christmas tree reported that their dog had been injured at least once by pine needles, mostly when they become lodged in the dog's paw.
Just under a third of participants reported that their dog had at one point, been injured or come to harm as a direct result of Christmas festivities. Alcohol and decorations were the main causes, while theobromine poisoning caused by chocolate consumption was a major worry. House guests leaving doors to off-limits rooms also posed a problem to cautious dog owners, with some reporting that canine escape attempts during the Christmas period were higher.
Christmas Safety Tips For Dog Owners
1) Dog owners with nervous pets should avoid using crackers in the presence of their dog
2) Chocolate should be kept out of your dog's reach
3) Bins should be emptied regularly to prevent foraging
4) Dogs should be provided with a calm area away from foot traffic to escape the hustle and bustle
5) Dogs should be banished from the kitchen when food is being cooked
6) Fake trees are safer than real ones. Keep the lights away from ground level and consider putting the tree on a table
Adam Whiteley, Head of Churchill Pet Insurance, said: “It’s no surprise so many owners like to treat their four-legged friends as much as the rest of the family over the festive season. We're certainly a nation of dog-lovers. However, we want to raise awareness of the potential risks facing pets this Christmas. We’d advise pet owners to keep human goodies and other potentially hazardous items well out of the reach of their hungry and inquisitive four-legged friends, as treating pets for illness or injury can be very costly.

“We strongly recommend pet insurance being put in place to cover any unforeseen vet bills and to give owners peace of mind in the event of a pet needing veterinary treatment.”
---
Distributed by petbuzz :: social media for pet brands
