During the eighth grade Transition Day ceremony on Wednesday, June 2, the student council presented the class quilt. The class quilt is a tradition of the eighth grade class as each student is represented on the quilt with something that is significant to their lives and to their KCD experience.

Rosetta Stone: year one

It has been a year since KCD went online with Rosetta Stone, offering this top-ranked program to our entire ecommunity. We used 996 of our 1000 accounts, and there were 50 teachers and 13 staff who asked to have accounts and have explored the following languages:
Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Dutch, Filipino, French, German, Hebrew, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Persan, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish (both Latin American and Castillan), and Swedish.

The students have responded very well to the program, and its 24/7 access has greatly enhanced the US language program. The world language teachers encourage you to use the summer to start a language ! Contact Ms. Amick if you would like an account.

If you are interested in what the program offers, please visit http://www.rosettastone.com.

KCD MS team participates in Destination Imagination Global Finals

Sixth graders Aravind Vinayakan and James Roth and seventh grader Drew Lipman represented KCD and the state of Kentucky at this year’s DI Global Finals hosted by the University of Tennessee from May 26-29.

<!--break-->

Global Finals is the world’s largest gathering of creative problem solvers. It brings together over 1,000 teams and 12,000 participants from across the US and a dozen foreign countries annually. Teams of students from grade one through university level present both pre-planned and impromptu solutions to challenges created by an international panel of DI challenge writers.

This is the first year KCD has sent a team to Global Finals, and their enthusiasm for the program promises to pave the way for many others discovering the DI program at our school. A highlight of our participation this year was the opportunity to serve as international ambassadors for a six-student team from Korea. This was the first trip to the United States for these Korean students, and our middle schoolers did an excellent job welcoming them and encouraging them before and after their public presentation. James, Drew, and Aravind cheered for them, shared email addresses, sampled their “kimpa” (a Korean version of sushi), and learned to say “kimchee” when taking a picture together. Their short time together at UT was just enough to help them form lasting international friendships. Parents and students interested in the Destination Imagination program should contact KCD faculty sponsor Anne Kaiser-Harryman.

We are please to report that KCD is once again this year able to fund the construction of two new rainwater harvesting systems at schools in our Sister City of Tamale, Ghana. Last week, $8,800 USD were transferred to Sister Cities of Tamale who, under the supervision of Mr. Kaleem Jehanfo (past president of Sister Cities of Tamale and visitor to KCD in May 2009), has already begun construction of the two systems. This year, one system will go to KCD sister school TISSEC for the boys' dormitory, and the other will go to Vitting Secondary School, a nearby boarding high school in great need of supplementary water supply.

When the KCD student delegation traveled to Tamale in February of this year, the water supply for the city of Tamale was severed, and the two systems installed last year (one at TISSEC's girls' dormitory and one at Dahin Sheli), were the reason that girl students and women on the faculty did not have to miss class or endure long walks in search of water for their campuses.

Thanks to all who have contributed to this ongoing annual project, particularly the Sing for Water program on Grandparents' Day. We once again plan to attempt to fund an additional system through KCD community philanthropic efforts in the 2010-2011 school year under the direction of Ghana Water Project Director Brina Stephens.

The PA is an integral part of the our community, and KCD would simply not be the great place it is without all the imagination, creativity, and hard work of Ms. Alford and the other PA volunteers this year.

Thanks to the generosity of Aquinas Preparatory alumnus Lowry Watkins Jr. ’64, the Robertson Library is now the beneficiary of the Lowry and Marshall Watkins Library Fund. The fund will allow the library to purchase new books for students in all three divisions. Books purchased through the fund will be identified by a special bookplate.

Mr. Watkins attended a reception in the library this week and shared cookies and lemonade with Ms. Purdie’s kindergarten class. Thanks to Mr. Watkins for his contribution to our library!

KCD to launch Ghana Container Project

In the 2010-2011 academic year, KCD will undertake a significant community project, which is to collect, organize, and ship used and surplus school, athletic, and medical supplies to our sister schools in Tamale, Ghana on a forty-foot marine shipping container. We hope to collect a variety of items through donations from the KCD and greater Louisville community and plan to sort, organize, and store them on campus prior to loading and shipping them in the middle or later part of next year. The first collection of used or extra items is our annual end-of-the-year school supplies drive going on in all three divisions right now.

Beginning in the fall, we will organize some targeted drives requesting donations of used athletic and school equipment, books, clothes, running shoes, and surplus medical supplies and equipment. And we’ll need your help, not just of extra items you might not need that you could contribute, but also your connections to organizations, businesses, and people in the city of Louisville who might also want to donate some surplus items. The goal is to accomplish a major contribution of necessary goods to Tamale without costing anyone a penny, and to that end, we believe we have the actual shipping of the container from Louisville to Ghana already donated at this time!

So instead of getting rid of unneeded or outgrown school, athletic, or medical supplies this summer, please consider donating them to the KCD Ghana Container!

This project is being spearheaded by Ms. Jean Amick and is in cooperation with Rotary Club of Louisville, Supplies Over Seas, and Sister Cities of Louisville, who are collectively working to ship another two containers filled with medical supplies and equipment to Tamale as well. For more information, or to join the group organizing this exciting project, please contact Ms. Amick at jean.amick@kcd.org or (502) 814-4147.

Bearcat Middle School Invitational brings three new school records

Over 360 athletes traveled to the KCD Monaco-Walker Track to compete in the annual Bearcat Middle School Invitational. The format of the meet is divided between fifth-sixth graders (junior varsity) and seventh-eighth graders (varsity). Twelve schools competed in the event with both the varsity boys and girls finishing in fifth place and the junior varsity girls placing sixth.

Taijon Smith (varsity boys 100m, 200m, 400m, and long jump), Ravi Brar (varsity boys 100m hurdles), Rachel Jennings (junior varsity girls 100m hurdles), Selena Morgan (junior varsity girls shot put), Kennedi Hayes (varsity girls high jump), Catherine Lavin (varsity girls 400m), and the varsity girls 800 m relay (Brigitta Hendren, Morgan, Hayes, and Lavin) placed in the top four in their respective events.

Three new Country Day school records were established at the Bearcat Invitational. Taijon Smith reset his own 100m record (12.40) along with breaking an eight-year 200m record (25.70) previously set by Amir Sheth in 2002 (25.83). Sixth-grader Selena Morgan's shot-put throw of 24’09” broke a school record previously held by Sara Muhammed in 2008 (23’11”). Several personal records were reached by other Bearcat athletes including Emma Baker (1600m), Ananya Gupta (long jump), Kourtney Dwyer (shot put), Hans Naake (800m), Luke Brownlow (discus), and Noah Gillis (1600m).

For most of the middle school squad, the Bearcat Invitational served as the last meet of the season. Seven individuals were selected using previous time or distance standards to compete in the Middle School State Championship later this month in Lexington, Kentucky. Best of luck in the state competition!
