What went down on Health Hack Day?

Last weekend, the first edition of Health Hack Day was arranged in Stockholm. The event was part networking opportunity for people interested in health technology, and part contest, where ten teams of developers got 24 hours to develop a prototype of a new tool for digital healthcare. Among the contributions were a diary-like app for parents of prematurely born babies, an XBOX Kinect based tool for motoric tests designed for patients suffering from Parkinsons disease, and an app that makes it more fun to keep track on how your wellbeing is affected by what you eat.

The winning contribution though was a smartphone app for urin sample analysis, which uses the smartphones camera to analyze the sample and then visualize the result. If you're curious about how it works, videos of all the presentations and talks from the weekend are available at the Health Hack Day website.

Indicators used for both Karolinska Institutet and SLL resource allocation 2013 will be calculated on publications in the bibliometric system verified up until and including May 31st.

Please note that the analysis will exclude confirmed publications that in the bibliometric verification toolkit have not yet been supplied with address information about where they were written (be it at KI, SLL or any other organization).

Easter is coming closer and that means some changes in the Library opening hours. On Holy Thursday we close at 5 pm. From Good Friday until Easter Monday the Llibrary is closed, both in Solna and Huddinge. More information about our Holiday opening hours.

Spring exhibition 2012

The Vernissage is held at noon (12 pm) the 20th of March at the University Library in Huddinge. The exhibition can be seen between 20-30 March.

The KI shuttle between Solna and Huddinge stops right outside the Library where the exhibition is held.

600 new e-books!

This week it's the international "Read an E-book Week", and we are celebrating by giving students and staff at KI access to over 600 new e-books.

We have bought Informa Healthcare Online Books Complete Collection which consists of over 600 e-books with a very broad coverage of the medical field. As an example, click on the links to see the titles available for the following subject areas: dermatology, toxicology and neurology.

To find the e-books from Informa Healthcare you can either go to our e-book webpage or to our library catalogue MIKS.

If you are having problems with the e-books you can chat with our e-media support or send us an email to emedia.ub@ki.se.

Get inspired by a professor

The successful seminar series 'Get inspired by a professor' continues this spring. The lectures take place on Thursdays 12.15-12.45 in the library at Huddinge Campus. Sandwiches and drinks will be served on a first come, first served basis.

The list of seminars will be updated with the topic for each lecturer.

Some of the seminars will be held in Swedish, and some in English. Here is a list of the seminars with English titles, so far.

9 February: Our common future - Reflections of a health systems researcher, Göran Tomson, Professor of International Health Systems and Policy Research at the Department of Public Health Sciences.
16 February: Selenium - from Berzelius to current research on selenoproteins, Elias Arnér, Professor of Biochemistry, with a special focus on selenoproteins at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics.
1 March: Genes, lifestyle and rheumatic diseases , Lars Klareskog, Professor of Reumatology at the Department of Medicine.
15 March: Hearing Loss and Tinnitus - From Molecule to Society, Barbara Canlon, Professor of Hearing Physiology at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology.

Extended opening hours in KIB-labb and a new Information Desk (“Infopunkt”) for students

You have probably noticed that there is a lot going on at our facilities on the Solna campus. The goal is to create better learning environments for KI students.

At the same time, the library has made a few changes concerning some of the services offered.

We have extended the opening hours of KIB- labb! From now on, you are welcome to drop-in at KIB-labb between 11 AM and 16 PM on Monday to Friday in Solna as well as Huddinge. KIB-labb is an academic workshop during which librarians tutor students in e.g. information retrieval and management as well as how to cite the literature and create bibliographies.

In a few weeks, there will be more changes in Solna. When the renovation of the learning environment in BZ is completed, we will move the library information desk on floor 3 and Lyktan on floor 2 to a new information point called "Infopunkten” which has been created as a collaboration between Student Affairs, Faculty Office - Higher Education, Facilities Planning, the Information Technology Office and the University Library.

“Infopunkten” will act as a joint information desk for all activities in the BZ building and will be inaugurated on the 24th February 2012.

One of our new databases for 2012 is Scopus, a comprehensive scientific, medical, technical and social science database. If you have a smart phone and want to use it to get access to Scopus, we recommend that you download the database app, SciVerse Scopus Alerts.

Before you download the app you have to create a personal account in Scopus. Instructions for creating an account in Scopus:

Go to our list of databases, click on Scopus.
Create an account by clicking “Register” at the top right of the page.
Fill in the form – and it’s important that you type in you KI e-mail when asked for an e-mail address.

Now you are ready to go to App Store or Android Market on your mobile to download the app. Once that is done, you can:

•    Search across thousands of scholarly journals from more than 5000 international publisher
•    Save the important articles in one place for easy look-up
•    Set up and review email alerts for your favorite searches
•    Set up email alerts for when an author cites a particular article
•    Annotate articles with your own notes and share article links through email or twitter.

Scopus and HEED - two new databases

We have made some changes to our database selection for 2012. Two new databases have been added (Scopus and HEED) and two databases are no longer available (AMED and Derwent).

Scopus is a comprehensive scientific, medical, technical and social science database. Scopus gives you access to nearly 19 500 titles from aprox. 5 000 publishers, 18 500 peer-reviewed journals (including open access journals), conference proceedings and a very large amount of patent records. For more detailed information about the content of Scopus go to the Content Coverage Guide.

HEED – Health Economic Evaluation Database – contains information on studies of cost-effectiveness and other forms of economic evaluation of medicines and other treatments and medical interventions.

AMED and Derwent are no longer available due to several years of declining use.
However, the major part of the content in AMED is also available in Scopus. So if you are looking for information on alternative medicine, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, rehabilitation and palliativ care - try Scopus!

Renovations in BZ building in Solna

During December 12 to January 29 the student spaces in BZ in Solna will be renovated. This includes the library.

The library will for example get better lighting and a new roof. Part of the library’s entrance level will be closed off with a temporary passageway.

The library will be open, and all our services will be available. Ask someone from our staff if you have any questions.

New editions of medical standard textbooks in Access Medicine

The latest update of Access Medicine consists of 68 new titles, among them several new editions of medical standard textbooks, for example: CURRENT Medical Diagnosis & Treatment 2012, Ganong’s Review of Medical Physiology, 23e and Goodman & Gilman’s The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, 12e.

The new update also includes some new features. For example you can:
• Download chapters in different formats to your hand held devices (ie smartphones or iPads)
• Download the books to your computer for offline reading.

The American Heart Association and Wiley Launch OA Journal

A new Open Access journal will be launched later this fall by The American Heart Association and Wiley- Blackwell, Journal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease.

Journal of the American Heart Association will provide rapid publication based on peer review, aiming for three weeks from acceptance to online publication. The articles will be freely available on HighWire, the journal’s ePublishing platform, and deposited in PubMed Central immediately upon publication.

Oasen is closed and will be opened in a new location

Oasen will open again on 28 November. You will find the new room D240 in Hus 75:01 on the ground floor at Retzius väg 13A.

First Issues of Wiley OA journals published.

With Open Access Week coming up Wileys first issues of Brain and Behaviour and Ecology and Evolution has been published in September. It is to create a sense of familiarity Wiley has choosen to compile the articles into issues for otherwise the continuously published articles.

Medical images from Images.MD

Need a scientific image for teaching, for a PowerPoint presentation or maybe to show a colleague? Images.MD, a part of SpringerImages , provides a search interface to images published by Springer.

Staff and students at Karolinska Insitutet have access to images published in the Springer journals and books that the library have an online subscription on. Additionally, there are many free images available to everyone.
