It’s Open Access Week!

Are you familiar with Open Access publishing? Did you know that researchers at Karolinska Institutet publish Open Access articles? Take the opportunity to personally affect current changes in Open Access funding requirements!

This week is the International Open Access Week. The academic community and publishers worldwide highlight and debate different Open Access issues, challenges and incentives. Why not join them?

The brief concept of Open Access publishing is to publish freely accessible research articles, as long as the readers have access to the internet. Authors retain copyright to Open Access articles as well, contrary to traditional publishing, where authors have to sign over the copyright to the journal publisher. Many Open Access publishers cover the publishing cost of Open Access articles by charging authors that cost, which is often called author or article processing charges. Open access publishing is the contrary way of publishing research articles, where the traditional way is to publish articles in subscription based journals. Subscription based journals are owned by scientific publishers who are in the business of selling journal subscriptions to academia. These subscriptions take up huge chunks of university and college libraries’ budgets. Libraries have not always been able to provide access to all e-resources users ask for due to these costs.

Open Access is one way of eluding this problem. A huge amount of research conducted in Swedish universities and colleges is funded by government grants. The belief is that the output – the research data and findings – should be made freely accessible for all interested parties, not just to subscribers.

Karolinska Institutet and Open Access

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have published Open Access articles for many years. Research data between 2000 and 2013 show that the total amount of all published articles by Karolinska Institutet researchers have steadily gone up by 49% during this time span. Open Access articles have increased fivefold during the same time, from 6% in year 2000, to 22% in 2013.

Total amount of articles published by KI researchers and total amount of Open access articles in Open Access journals or hybrid journals that allow articles to be freely accessible as Open Access after a six month long embargo. Embargo means that you have to wait for six (or more) months before the article is freely available, and is only used in hybrid journals. Hybrid journals are subscription journals that also publish Open Access articles. Data above is collected from the KI bibliometric database.

Different studies about scientific publishing and Open Access publishing have shown that, for the last decade, the Open Access publishing uptake has not been higher than 1 - 10 % of the total scientific publishing. For several years, the Karolinska Institutet Open Access figures have been higher than that. What could be the reason behind these figures?

One of the reasons could be the research funders Open Access requirements. In other research intensive countries such as the USA or United Kingdom, funding bodies as the NIH and the Wellcome Trust have demanded Open Access publishing by all funding applicants for quite some time now. The same goes for Sweden and especially at Karolinska Institutet, where the Swedish Research Council is the biggest research funder, followed by EU FP7, NIH, Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and the Wellcome trust.

New Open Access funding requirements

It might be useful to know about two new Open Access requirements from the Swedish Research Council.

As of next year, the Swedish Research Council will demand that researchers, when reporting their research projects to the Swedish Research Council, can only report Open Access articles they have published, thus excluding articles published in subscription based journals. This requirement will affect all researchers applying for grants as of 2015.

The other requirement, as of 2017, will be that all Open Access articles funded by the Swedish Research Council must have a Creative Commons license, a so called CC BY 2.0 license.

The reason behind these requirements is that in 2012, the EU Commission published a recommendation on access to and preservation of scientific information. All EU membership countries, Sweden amongst them, were asked to produce national guidelines on how to achieve free access to scientific information. The Swedish Government gave the Swedish Research Council the assignment to produce these guidelines and now there is a proposal of national open access guidelines available.

Changes regarding overdue fines from September 1:st

From September the 1st there will be new rules regarding the overdue fines for books borrowed at the university library

“21-day” loans will be fined with 10 SEK from the first day the loan is overdue.

The fine for course books will increase from 5 SEK to 10 SEK / day starting the first day the loan is overdue.

The administration fee on overdue books will be removed. Instead, an invoice with the value of the borrowed item will be sent out if the return date is passed with more than 18 days.

The changes are partly made upon request from patrons that books will be returned on time. We hope that the changes will make it easier for our customers.

Please note that the Day loan fines will remain the same.

Customers are obliged to keep track of when their loan periods expire and to ensure that items are returned on time. The University Library does not undertake to send out reminders, but only does this as a service by email. Many KI students are currently working on their essays or theses. Are you one of them? Join us for a late night at the university library, on Thursday May 15 between 5.00 and 10.00 p.m. in Solna. During the evening, we can assist you with many aspects of your writing. Academic Writing Support, "KIB-labb" (an academic workshop), and the resource room will be open. Among other things, we will be offering:

short lectures
drop-in consultations with Academic Writing Support
drop-in consultations with "KIB-labb"
advice from a study counsellor
refreshments.

A new look on the website

Here at the library we start the new year off with a partially new look on the website. Our ambition has been to simplify the structure and make information directed toward our user groups easier to find. We also want to focus on the library´s own services and resources.

The background to these changes is the input we got from you, our users.

During the winter 2012/2013 we conducted several interviews with students, teachers, researchers and doctoral students. We are using the feedback we got from the interviews as we create a whole new website which will be release in the autumn of 2014. Our aim is to make a website that is relevant to ours users´ needs and wishes.

Since the autumn is far ahead we wanted to make some immediate changes to our existing website based on the results of the user interviews.

We hope you like the new appearance and we welcome all feedback. You can either email us on webb@kib.ki.se or use the feedback form.

A summary of the changes made:

Three new entries centrally positioned on the startpage with directed information to Students, Teachers and Researchers & doctoral students.
Relevant direct links on the landing sites for Students, Teachers and Reserachers & doctoral students.
The FAQ has been moved to the left of the chat box and most frequently used categories have direct links in the box.
The focus in the right margin is on news and marketing.
A new service (book widget) to highlight our e-books.

New group room booking system

Our booking system that we use to book group rooms, the resource room and academic writing support has been updated. The biggest changes are:

No more confirmation (bekräftelse) of a booking is required. However, the same booking rules still apply so if you do not show up at the latest 15 minutes after the first hour of your booking another group can use the room even though your booking still appears in the calendar.
The booking calendar will reformat depending on your screen size, so you can book from your mobile!
No need to provide a name for your booking, the first 3 letters of your username is used by default.
You can see all the rooms on a campus in a single table so it is easier to see if any rooms are free at a given time.

Also, you can now book english language academic writing support online instead of just via -email. So go ahead and try the new group room booking system. We would love to hear feedback from you about the system. You can write to us at webb@kib.ki.se.

Changes in the University Library’s customer service and support from 2 september 2013

For several years, the University Library offered a student service point, Lyktan. With the renovations of the student environment at KI and the establishment of the new Information desks in Solna and Huddinge, all students who previously received administrative help at Lyktan should be referred / turn to the Information desk (Infopunkten). The support function is still the same, only the name changes. Contact details

From the autumn term 2013, we restructure our customer towards teachers and administrators as the new department Educational Technology Support start up a new support function. They will provide Ping Pong support for teachers and administrators, but also provide support and tutoring in other ICT educational tools and how they can be applied in education.

From September 2nd, teachers and administrators who need help with Ping Pong or other ICT educational tools should turn to ICT pedagogical support.

Summer opening hours and lending time

Summer is getting closer and that means the library has limited opening hours but you can borrow books for the entire summer.

Summer loans
If you borrow or renew a book on or after June 3, you can keep it until August 26. The exception to this is day loan books, in which case you have to borrow the book on or after June 17 in order to keep it until August 26.

Opening hours
Beginning June 10 the library will have summer opening hours. This means the library will be closed on Saturdays and will close earlier on weekdays.

Huddinge open by request only
The library in Huddinge will be open by request between July 1 – August 9. Call us at 08-524 84 000 between 10am and 2pm during that period if you need access to the library for a quick errand. If you need to sit in the library to study the library in Solna will have opening hours during that period.

More than 6000 ebooks from Springer are now available at KIB!

The university library has bought ebook collections in Biomedicine and Life Sciences as well as in Medicine. The ebooks are in PDF format and you´ll find them in reSEARCH, the library catalogue or in Springers platform.

The University Library is now offering online courses on lynda.com

All students, faculty, and staff at KI now have access to lynda.com, an online subscription library that teaches the latest software tools and skills through high-quality instructional videos taught by recognized industry experts.

In order to create an account, the first time you need to be on the KI campus. Once you have created an account you can access more than 1,500 training videos on a broad range of subjects from any computer or device.

Access the lynda.com library 24/7 - even from your iPhone, iPad, Android device, or mobile phone - and watch entire courses or single tutorial videos as you need them. Exercise files let you follow along with the instruction as you learn, and bookmarks help you keep track of what you’d like to watch.

Update in our bibliometric system

You can now verify all publications which are indexed in Medline and published 1995 or later regardless of whether or not the publications appear in Web of Science.

The reason for this change has to do with the many different ways that the research produced by KI is analyzed. Checking how often a publication is cited is of interest, but more often than not the questions that are of greatest interest have to do with who is publishing what or which subject areas are represented in KI publications. It is also important to be aware of which publications are excluded from the analyses that are based solely on date from the database we use for citation analysis, Web of Science.

We also updated the interface (http://kipublications.ki.se) where you can check which KI publications are already in the bibliometric system.

New database list

On November 1st the database list is being updated and will change appearance & function.

Our new list has links to mobile sites and apps for those databases that have them.
EasySearch will cease completely after October 31. If you wish to search across multiple databases please use reSEARCH instead.
The "My saved databases" function that was in EasySearch will disappears. If you would still like to save your favorite databases, you can do so via the box "My favorite databases" on our homepage.

We have also taken the opportunity to review the contents of the database list, which means that we have gone through clickthrough statistics for a year. The freely available databases that have had very few or no clicks at all we simply removed from the list.

We hope that this will make the database list more easier to survey and more useful for you.

The information about mobile interfaces and apps is not entirely complete but we will continue to update the list.

Your library card on your phone with Passbook and iOS6

Do you keep forgetting your library card and wish you could have it on your phone? A new and elegant way of saving tickets, coupons and other cards was introduced by Apple last week, in the latest iPhone update to iOS 6. You might have seen the icon already, labeled "Passbook", so why not try it out by adding your University library card?

To add your library card to Passbook, enter this address in Safari on your iPhone:

kib.ki.se/m/passbook

Enter your name and library card barcode number in the form, and press "Skapa pass". The card will now download and be displayed as a preview before you can save it. Press the "Add" button to save, and you're done!

Now when your library card is saved, you can access it by going in to the Passbook app. As soon as you're in, or close to the library, the card will be displayed automatically on your home screen for quick access when you're at the self-checkout machine for instance. This requires that location services are turned on though, and can be disabled of course.

Unfortunately our self checkout-machines can't read barcodes on smartphone screens. This means you have to enter the barcode number manually instead of scanning it. This can be done by pressing the "No patron card?" button at the bottom of the screen when asked to scan.

We hope this service will simplify life for at least some of you, and we will happily take suggestions or comments by either mail, phone or chat.

Invitation to a workshop on future journals and KI

The journals landscape is changing, but how?

Karolinska Institutet University Library is pleased to invite you to attend the author workshop "Future Journals and KI" which is mainly intended for younger researcher/PhD students. The work

The workshop will look at which journals KI researchers prefer most, factors influencing how to choose a journal and some publishing recommendations from KI. In this context, repre- sentatives from three important publishers, i.e. PloS, BioMed Central and Nature will talk about their views on publishing trends and how they plan to be future journals at KI.

Attendance is free of charge, but we do require that you sign up so that we know how many people are attending for the coffee break.

Easier to print and copy

In about a week, we're launching a new printing system at the University Library. From September 10th all prints and copies will be handled by your KI card instead of a separate copy card and printing account.

With the new system, you can print from any computer and pick up your copies at any printer by just swiping your KI card. Long gone are the times when you had to remember which printer is which, and where it's located. You will also no longer have to manually add funds to your account by standing in the library waiting line.

Payment for prints and copies will be handled by PayEx. You can prepare today already, by creating a PayEx account, which functions as a digital wallet. Funds can be added by bank transfer or credit card online, and is free for you as a user. We recommend you wait to add any funds just yet though. All students with funds still left on their old account will have them transferred to PayEx once the system is up and running.

A new way to search - reSEARCH

We have changed the way you search for articles, books and other resources on the library start page. With the launch of the search engine reSEARCH, it is now possible to search through almost all of the library's available resources from one search box.

This has caused some changes to the library start page:

Instead of doing your search in PubMed by default, your hits will now be displayed i reSEARCH, and you will get relevant hits from all of the library's resources. Direct links to PubMed, CINAHL etcetera are placed to the right of the search box, as seen in the picture above.

Another change is that EasySearch has disappeared from the start page, since it to most extent is replaced by reSEARCH.

We hope this new search engine will make it easier for you to search - and faster too!

Use the new bibliometric analysis toolkit to analyze your own verified publications

One aim of the Karolinska Institutet/SLL bibliometric database is to provide information to help individual researchers assess and improve the impact of their publications.

Now, a bibliometric analysis toolkit has been launched to more easily make this kind of information accessible to verifying authors. (You will find it in the top, right hand corner of the verification toolkit, https://bibliometrics.ki.se/users/login)

You can explore the bibliometric profile of your publications, the publications of your department/clinic or, if your wish, of KI/SLL as a whole. You can also see in which KI/SLL decentile you can be found based on indicator values for your publications, such as number of citations or average journal impact.

Summertime at the Library

During summer we have changed opening hours at the Library. From 11th of June until 12th of August the Library in Solna is open 10 am - 14 pm, Monday to Friday. Closed on weekends. The library in Huddinge will be open on request during the same time period. Please see our Opening hours for detailed information.

During summer the lending time on our books is prolonged, books borrowed on 4th of June and onwards are to be returned on the 27th of August.

What went down on Health Hack Day?

Last weekend, the first edition of Health Hack Day was arranged in Stockholm. The event was part networking opportunity for people interested in health technology, and part contest, where ten teams of developers got 24 hours to develop a prototype of a new tool for digital healthcare. Among the contributions were a diary-like app for parents of prematurely born babies, an XBOX Kinect based tool for motoric tests designed for patients suffering from Parkinsons disease, and an app that makes it more fun to keep track on how your wellbeing is affected by what you eat.

The winning contribution though was a smartphone app for urin sample analysis, which uses the smartphones camera to analyze the sample and then visualize the result. If you're curious about how it works, videos of all the presentations and talks from the weekend are available at the Health Hack Day website.

Indicators used for both Karolinska Institutet and SLL resource allocation 2013 will be calculated on publications in the bibliometric system verified up until and including May 31st.

Please note that the analysis will exclude confirmed publications that in the bibliometric verification toolkit have not yet been supplied with address information about where they were written (be it at KI, SLL or any other organization).

Proxy login to KI network should not be used since this may cause login problems.

Verification help is available in the right hand menu of the login page. Questions can be sent to the university library (mail, phone or chat) or the libraries at the university hospitals.
