Held under the theme “Climate-Smart Technologies and Practices for Sustainable Food Systems,” the expo aims to connect agricultural innovators, technology providers and the farming community while promoting sustainable agricultural practices and strengthening regional food systems. The event will feature interactive crop demonstration plots, agricultural exhibitions, machinery displays and livestock demonstration units. Business-to-business (B2B) meetings will also provide opportunities for exhibitors to showcase new products, share innovations and establish strategic partnerships. Entry to the expo will be free to encourage participation by farmers and other stakeholders.

As the host institution, Kibabii University is encouraging staff and students with agricultural innovations to participate and showcase their work. Interested innovators are urged to register with the Directorate of Research and Innovation to secure exhibition spaces.

In a significant move to enhance the holistic well-being of its community, Kibabii University today 7th October 2026, hosted a high-level delegation from Oasis Healthcare Group Limited (OHGL) to solidify a landmark partnership. The collaboration, cemented through a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding, is set to revolutionize student mentorship, mental health support, and research opportunities at the university.

The meeting, held at the university’s main campus, was chaired by the Director of Partnerships and Linkages, Prof. Paul Obino. The OHGL delegation was led by Faith Indeche, the Corporate Relations Officer, and included senior officials from various departments: Benedict Were (Senior Marketing Manager), Harriet Wambui (Senior Psychologist), Jorim Nyambok (Regional Administrator), and Clinton Mukanda (Marketing Officer).

Prof. Obino highlighted the importance of the partnership, noting that the collaboration aligns perfectly with Kibabii University’s strategic goal of fostering a supportive and innovative academic environment. He observed that by joining forces with a leading healthcare provider like Oasis, the university is not only investing in the mental and psychological wellness of its students and staff but also opening new avenues for practical learning, research, and community impact.

The partnership is built on a robust framework that clearly distinguishes between educational mentorship and professional clinical services, ensuring the highest standards of safety and ethics are maintained. The Memorandum of Understanding outlines a multi-faceted collaboration covering student mentorship and professional development, where OHGL’s qualified professionals will provide structured psychotherapy mentorship, professional guidance, and educational case discussions for students, complemented by limited, supervised observational exposure that gives students valuable insight into real-world mental health practice without constituting a formal clinical placement. It also provides for accessible mental health services, including the establishment of an On-Campus Mental Health Clinic run by OHGL’s designated professionals, supplemented by Telepsychiatry Services and an Institutional Wellness Programme, with costs covered by the Social Health Authority for eligible students and staff. The collaboration further encompasses mental health awareness and psychosocial wellness through joint campaigns, destigmatization drives, and a Student Peer Counsellor Programme where OHGL’s Oasis Academy will train nominated students to provide first-line, non-clinical support and referral guidance, alongside the deployment of the Oasis MindCare Application for psychoeducation and wellness resources. Additionally, the Memorandum of Understanding paves the way for joint research initiatives in mental health, service improvement, and psychology education, and allows for OHGL clinicians to serve as guest lecturers and research supervisors, enriching the academic experience for students.

This partnership marks a new chapter in Kibabii University’s dedication to creating a supportive campus environment that prioritizes the mental health and professional development of its entire community.

Kibabii University team led by Chairperson, Environmental Management Mainstreaming Committee Dr. George Ekisa, participated in the Presidential Tree-Planting Challenge on 10th October 2026 at the Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) Farm in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, as part of the national Mazingira Day celebrations. The event was graced by President William Ruto, who joined local residents in planting trees as part of a coordinated nationwide environmental conservation initiative.

The challenge aimed to plant 6 million trees within one hour across the country, demonstrating Kenya’s collective commitment to environmental conservation and climate action. According to the reported results, more than 3.3 million trees were planted nationwide during the one-hour exercise. At the ADC Farm alone, participants planted and watered more than 2,000 tree seedlings. The remaining seedlings were distributed to local residents to plant in other areas, extending the initiative’s impact beyond the event venue.

Addressing participants after the exercise, the President thanked Kenyans for turning out to mark Mazingira Day and reiterated the Government’s commitment to planting 15 billion trees by 2032, with the aim of achieving 30 per cent national tree cover. The President urged communities, schools and the private sector to go beyond planting seedlings and prioritize their care and survival to ensure lasting environmental benefits. He also highlighted the need for cost-effective approaches to restoring degraded landscapes, including aerial seeding and the use of seed balls in forest restoration programmes.

The event concluded with the launch of an aerial seeding operation targeting Mt. Elgon, underscoring the importance of adopting innovative approaches to forest restoration and environmental conservation. Through initiatives such as the Presidential Tree-Planting Challenge, the University continues to support national efforts to expand tree cover, restore degraded ecosystems and promote a culture of environmental responsibility.

Kibabii University has been named, alongside the University of Huddersfield (UK) and Carbon Footprint Ltd (Kenya), as a finalist for the prestigious 2026 Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Awards in the Outstanding KTP Impact Award. The Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership Awards celebrate outstanding partnerships, individuals and organisations that demonstrate innovation, collaboration and impact across the KTP community. The 2026 winners will be announced at the Innovate UK KTP Awards ceremony in Glasgow, United Kingdom, on 1st December 2026.

The recognition follows the successful completion of the African Agriculture Knowledge Transfer Partnership (AAKTP) project, “Optimizing Sugarcane Supply Chain Through Sustainable Bagasse Dryer Solution in Sugarcane Waste Management.” The project was implemented through a partnership between Kibabii University, the University of Huddersfield and Carbon Footprint Ltd, with funding from Innovate UK/UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) to a tune of approximately KES 45 million.

At the centre of the project is the EcoDryer, an innovative mechanized technology developed to address the inefficient and weather-dependent drying of sugarcane bagasse. Unlike traditional sun-drying methods, the EcoDryer enhances the efficiency and reliability of bagasse drying for conversion into biomass fuel and other value-added products. At Kibabii University, the project was led by Prof. Joshua Olang’o Abuya, Principal Investigator, working with a multidisciplinary research team that included Dr. Jonathan Mutonyi, Ms. Jane Toroitich and Ms. Margaret Wanambisi, alongside the industry and international partners.

The innovation has demonstrated significant technological and operational benefits, including increased bagasse-drying capacity, reduced drying costs, improved worker productivity and safety, and reduced dependence on weather conditions. It also presents opportunities for commercialization, technology transfer and wider adoption in Kenya and other sugar-producing economies.

The project previously received an “Outstanding” grading from Innovate UK following its completion, recognizing its exceptional performance in knowledge transfer, innovation and sustainable impact. The latest recognition places the Kibabii University-led partnership among three finalists for the 2026 Outstanding KTP Impact Award. The other finalists are partnerships involving Ulster University and Axial3D Ltd, and the University of Strathclyde and Test Incorporated Ltd.

Commenting on the recognition, Prof. Joshua Olang’o Abuya said:

“Being named a finalist for the Outstanding KTP Impact Award is a tremendous recognition of what can be achieved through purposeful international collaboration between universities and industry. The EcoDryer journey demonstrates that African universities can develop and scale practical innovations that address local challenges while contributing to global priorities in clean energy, climate action and the circular bioeconomy.”
