Kibabii University Welcomes International Scholars Under the First IMPACT-ED Scholarship Call

Kibabii University has received international scholars from Uganda, Nigeria and Rwanda following the successful implementation of the First IMPACT-ED Scholarship Call. The IMPACT-ED Project led by the Principal Investigator Prof. John W. Makokha and Co-Principal Investigator Prof. Joshua Abuya seeks to promote postgraduate academic mobility and strengthen collaboration among participating higher education institutions while advancing climate-responsive education and capacity development across Africa.

The Kibabii University part of the project is funded by the European Union under the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) with a grant of €277,783 (approximately KES 42.6 million) and is implemented through a consortium of six partner universities: University of Namibia, Kibabii University, Kyambogo University, University of Eswatini, and University of Nigeria Nsukka, with support from University of Turku in Finland.

The seven (7) beneficiaries will undertake mobility at Kibabii University under various categories, including Master’s degree studies, Master’s credit mobility, PhD credit mobility, staff mobility and trainee opportunities.

1. Nwaeze Obianuju Joy – Nigeria (Mobility Category: Master’s Degree (M.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction)

Nwaeze Obianuju Joy is from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria, and is a beneficiary of the IMPACT-ED Intra-Africa Mobility Scholarship, pursuing a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Curriculum and Instruction at Kibabii University, Kenya. Her academic interests focus on curriculum development, teaching and learning, and improving educational practices to enhance students’ learning outcomes. Through the IMPACT-ED Project, she is gaining valuable opportunities to engage in academic and educational activities that strengthen her professional skills and broaden her experience. Joy is passionate about education and committed to contributing to the improvement of teaching and learning in her community and beyond.

2. Ugwu Juliet Kelechi – Nigeria (Mobility Category: Master's Credit Mobility)

Ugwu Juliet Kelechi will undertake Master’s credit mobility at Kibabii University under the IMPACT-ED Project. She is an MSc student in the Department of Soil Science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), with a research interest in soil microbiology and soil health, particularly the influence of human activities on microbial populations in tropical agricultural systems. She is a beneficiary of the IMPACT-ED Intra-Africa Mobility Scholarship, through which she is undertaking a research mobility programme at Kibabii University, Kenya. The mobility is providing her with an opportunity to broaden her research experience, strengthen academic networks and engage with new research communities across Africa. Juliet is passionate about sustainable soil management and food security and is committed to learning, collaboration and generating knowledge that contributes to sustainable agricultural systems.

3. Anyadike Divine Chigozirim – Nigeria (Mobility Category: Trainee)

Anyadike Divine Chigozirim is a third-year Computer and Robotics Education student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and a full-stack engineer with over four years of experience developing solutions across Web2 and Web3 ecosystems. His work spans intelligent systems, decentralized infrastructure and product engineering, with projects including ELF, a cross-functional team workspace; Orbyt, an event discovery platform for university students; and Guild, a decentralised App Store for AI agents built on Polkadot. A two-time Polkadot Sub0 Hackathon winner and Top 3 finalist at the ETF 2026 × 0G Labs Hackathon, Divine brings strong technical expertise and community-building experience to the IMPACT-ED Project. As a Trainee Scholar under the first call of the IMPACT-ED Intra-Africa Mobility Scholarship, he is undertaking a mobility programme at Kibabii University, Kenya, where he aims to apply his expertise in AI and data infrastructure to climate technology and environmental monitoring.

4. Dr. Asio Santa Maria – Uganda (Mobility Category: Staff Mobility)

Dr. Asio Santa Maria is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Biological Sciences at Kyambogo University, Uganda. Her academic and research interests include climate change education, biodiversity conservation, environmental and public health, medicinal natural products, climate-smart agriculture, and sustainable resource management. She has extensive experience in graduate research supervision, teaching, research and community engagement, and has published in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. As an active participant in the IMPACT-ED Project, Dr. Asio contributed to curriculum review and discussions on climate education and terrestrial plant diversity conservation. She presented the status of the M.Sc. curriculum under review at Kyambogo University and shared progress on the University’s Botanical Garden initiative, which is intended to support teaching, research, plant conservation and climate education. Through the IMPACT-ED academic staff mobility programme, Dr. Asio will undertake a three-month mobility at Kibabii University, Kenya, from January to April 2027, focusing on Artificial Intelligence, knowledge exchange, research collaboration and professional capacity development.

5. Chisom Ezinne Ogbuanya – Nigeria (Mobility Category: PhD Credit Mobility)

Chisom Ezinne Ogbuanya will undertake PhD credit mobility at Kibabii University under the IMPACT-ED Project. She is a PhD researcher in Control and Instrumentation Engineering at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria. Her research interests include artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), intelligent control, sustainable energy and water management, and smart sensing technologies. Her current research focuses on the development of AI-enabled and LoRaWAN-based systems for environmental monitoring and adaptive irrigation, with emphasis on efficient water and energy use and climate resilience. As a beneficiary of the IMPACT-ED Project, she is contributing to research on the application of AI and low-power IoT technologies for climate-resilient monitoring and management of indigenous oil-bearing plants. Through the project, she seeks to develop practical, affordable, and scalable technological solutions that support sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and climate adaptation in African communities.

6. Godfrey Kabaka – Uganda (Mobility Category: PhD Credit Mobility)

Godfrey Kabaka Mumpe will undertake PhD credit mobility at Kibabii University under the IMPACT-ED Project. He is a PhD student in Geography at Kyambogo University, Uganda, and a Lecturer in Geography at the Uganda National Institute for Teacher Education (UNITE), Kabale Campus. His academic and professional work focuses on rangeland ecology, climate change, biodiversity conservation, carbon assessment, and sustainable environmental management, with particular expertise in GIS and remote sensing. His PhD research examines the role of bushfires in shaping plant diversity and soil characteristics and their implications for agro-pastoral communities in Uganda’s cattle corridor. Mumpe participates in the IMPACT-ED Project through the credit-seeking PhD mobility programme, where he is strengthening his expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning for modelling biodiversity responses to anthropogenic and natural disturbances.

7. Louise Nkurayija – Rwanda (Mobility Category: Master's Degree (MSc Microbiology)

Kibabii University Choir Presents 2026 Kenya Music Festival Trophies to Vice Chancellor

Kibabii University delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 Kenya National Music Festival, securing five trophies and numerous certificates across a range of categories. Hosted by Kibabii University from 1^st to 14^th August, 2026, the national festival brought together performers from across the country. As both host and participant, the University presented 18 items. The University’s entries emerged victorious in two Folk Dances, one Folk Song, Shairi Ngonjera and Male Shairi, while several individual performers earned certificates for outstanding performances. The achievement culminated in the University’s successful team earning an opportunity to perform at the State Concert.

The achievement was formally celebrated on Tuesday, 15^th September, 2026, when the Choir Patron, Dr. Edith Simiyu, together with choir officials, presented the trophies and certificates to the Vice Chancellor. The ceremony was also attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Planning, Research and Innovation Prof. Julius Maiyo; Prof. Ernest Mohochi, representing the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration, Finance and Development); Dr. Samuel Baraza, representing the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs); the Registrar (Academic Affairs); and the Dean of Students Dr. Leunita Makila, among other University officials.

The Vice Chancellor congratulated the choir and all participating students for their exemplary performance, noting that the achievement had enhanced the University’s reputation while providing the students with a valuable opportunity to perform at the State Concert. He urged students to complement their talents with discipline, commitment and perseverance, emphasizing that talent should be viewed as a gateway to broader opportunities and personal development rather than merely as a source of immediate financial reward.

In her remarks, the Choir Patron Dr. Simiyu Simiyu highlighted the significance of the University’s achievement, noting that the 18 items presented at the festival demonstrated the depth and diversity of talent within Kibabii University. She observed that the five national victories were a reflection of the students’ hard work, commitment and dedication. She also appreciated the University Management for the support extended to the team, which contributed to its success.

Prof. Maiyo, who served as Chairperson of the 2026 Kenya Music Festival Organizing Committee, commended the University leadership for facilitating the successful hosting of the national event. He noted that the festival provided Kibabii University with opportunities to enhance its visibility, build networks with senior government officials, explore financial opportunities and strengthen institutional recognition.

DRC’s EAC-SMS Scholarship Recipient Commences MSc Programme at Kibabii University

Mr. Raphael Omar Kasaza, a scholarship recipient from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) under the East African Community Students’ Mobility Scholarship Scheme (EAC-SMS), has officially commenced his Master of Science in Information Technology programme at Kibabii University.

His admission to Kibabii University followed a competitive selection process under the EAC-SMS, through which the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) awarded him a scholarship to pursue the two-year Master of Science in Information Technology programme. The scholarship provides comprehensive support, including transport facilitation, institutional and student research costs, and health insurance. As the host institution, Kibabii University is also supporting the scholarship recipient through tuition and examination fee waivers.

Mr. Kasaza paid a courtesy call on the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo, on 14^th September 2026 at his office, marking an important milestone in his academic journey at the University. The courtesy call was attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Planning, Partnerships, Research and Innovation) Prof. Julius K. Maiyo; the Dean, School of Computing and Informatics Dr. Samuel Baraza; and Dr. Jacinta Mutwiwa, Coordinator, Linkages and International Affairs.

During the visit, Prof. Odeo congratulated Mr. Kasaza on his successful selection for the prestigious scholarship and welcomed him to Kibabii University. He assured him of the University’s full support throughout his studies, noting that Kibabii University remains committed to promoting academic excellence, regional integration and international collaboration through strategic partnerships. The Vice Chancellor further emphasized the University’s commitment to providing an enabling and inclusive learning environment in which students from across the East African Community can thrive, exchange knowledge and contribute meaningfully to the development of their respective fields and communities.

Speaking during the courtesy call, Mr. Kasaza expressed his appreciation to Kibabii University and the Inter-University Council for East Africa for the opportunity and the warm reception he has received since arriving at the University. He said he was honoured to have been selected for the scholarship and to join Kibabii University, adding that he looked forward to a productive and rewarding academic experience.

The EAC-SMS is a regional initiative of the Inter-University Council for East Africa aimed at promoting academic mobility, regional integration and excellence in higher education by enabling students from EAC partner states to pursue studies at participating universities within the region.

Kibabii University Signs Performance Contract to Strengthen Institutional Performance

Kibabii University has signed its Performance Contract (PC) for the 2026/2027 financial year, marking an important step towards strengthening accountability, institutional performance and service delivery across the University. The signing ceremony was held on Monday, 14^th September 2026, at the Senate Boardroom and was presided over by the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo. The ceremony brought together members of University Management, Registrars, Deans, Directors, Chairs of various committees and Chairs of Departments.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Odeo emphasized that the Performance Contract should be regarded as an instrument for enhancing the execution of the University’s mandate rather than a tool for placing unnecessary pressure on staff.

“This important document is meant to help us perform our duties better, not to enslave us,” the Vice Chancellor said.

Prof. Odeo noted that the Performance Contract provides the University with a clear sense of direction by defining the expected outcomes and targets for the institution and its various units. He consequently encouraged members of management to ensure that staff familiarize themselves with the contents of their respective departmental Performance Contracts and align their day-to-day activities with the agreed targets.

He urged staff to embrace performance contracting as a framework for achieving the University’s strategic objectives and fostering a culture of excellence. He also called for the promotion of a friendly, supportive and conducive working environment for both staff and students.

The development of the University’s Performance Contract commenced in June 2026 and culminated in its formal signing and adoption for implementation. University Management expressed satisfaction with the completion of the process, noting that the signed document will provide a framework for coordinated performance and accountability across the institution. Among the key priorities outlined in the Performance Contract is the strengthening of research and scholarly productivity. Staff will be encouraged and supported to develop research proposals and increase scholarly output, with an expectation of producing at least two publications annually. This is intended to contribute to the University’s research profile, knowledge-generation agenda and overall institutional performance.

The ceremony concluded with the Ag. Vice Chancellor signing the respective Performance Contract documents, paving the way for their implementation across the University.

Renowned Orator Ben Hinn Walubengo Inspires Kibabii University Freshers at 2026 Matriculation Ceremony

Kibabii University First Year Students have been challenged to look beyond the pursuit of academic qualifications and deliberately cultivate the character, capacity and relationships necessary to shape their future influence and contribution to society.

This was during an inspirational address delivered by renowned motivational speaker Orator Ben Hinn Walubengo after the Vice-Chancellor’s address at the 2026 Matriculation Ceremony on Friday 11^th September 2026.

Mr. Walubengo, an accomplished motivational speaker with a strong youth following in Kenya and the region challenged the students to critically reflect on the forces that shape personal influence, identifying models, directed energy, environment, vision and momentum as fundamental elements in determining an individual’s trajectory. He noted that meaningful influence is not simply conferred by position or authority but is cultivated through intentional choices, purposeful action, exposure and sustained personal development.

The speaker further encouraged the students to invest in five critical instruments of influence: capacity, connections, creativity, confidence and character.

According to Mr Walubengo, capacity requires individuals to understand what their aspirations demand of them, while meaningful connections provide access to relationships that can stimulate growth and unlock opportunities. He observed that creativity is strengthened through exposure, confidence enables effective self-expression, while character is forged through continuous learning, humility and the dignified treatment of others.

The speaker also underscored the formative influence of one’s environment, the importance of having a clearly defined sense of purpose and the significance of pivotal moments in generating momentum for personal transformation. He encouraged the students to remain grounded in faith, humility and continuous learning as they navigate the opportunities and challenges of university life.

The engagement was crowned by the Dean of Students, Dr Leunita Makila, who complemented the Vice Chancellor’s earlier message, “Your Destiny Is in Your Hands,” by linking the principle of personal responsibility to the practical realities of university life.

The motivational engagement was followed by a Universities Fund sensitization session, during which Charity Chelagat, Hillary Kalai and Brian Mamai provided the first-year students with practical insights into the student-centered funding model and the requirements for accessing scholarships.

Students were reminded of the importance of applying annually, meeting the stipulated eligibility requirements and ensuring that their details are properly validated where applicable. They were also informed about the available appeals mechanism for students dissatisfied with their funding allocations. Those experiencing challenges with the application process were advised to seek assistance at the Huduma Centre in Bungoma.

Our Dear Freshers,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today is a special day in the life of Kibabii University and, more importantly, in your lives. In a few moments, I will have the privilege and honour of officially welcoming and admitting you into Kibabii University during this 2026 Matriculation Ceremony.

You have entered a special place; a place of learning, discovery, innovation, friendships, opportunities and transformation. You have come to a place where dreams are nurtured and where the future is built. My message to you today is centered on a simple but powerful theme: “Your Destiny Is in Your Hands.”

The idea of destiny is often understood as the predetermined or expected future path of an individual. As you sit here today, many people may already have expectations about your future. Your parents and guardians have dreams for you. Your communities have expectations. Your lecturers and the University believe in your potential.

Perhaps one of the expectations is that, having joined the University today, you will successfully complete your studies and graduate in the year 2030. But, ladies and gentlemen, expectations alone do not guarantee success. Many people begin a journey with great dreams but never reach their intended destination. The difference often lies in what they do with the opportunities placed before them. That is why I say to you today: Your destiny is in your hands.

Opportunities will come your way. Your parents and guardians have invested in you. Your communities have supported you. The Government has created opportunities for education. Kibabii University will provide you with knowledge, skills, mentorship and an environment for growth. But ultimately, what you do with those opportunities will depend largely on you.

As Bishop Benson Idahosa once observed in essence, your destiny is in your hands. It is not in the hands of someone in your village or elsewhere. You must take charge and make it happen. Opportunities may come your way, but the responsibility to seize them and transform your life rests with you. The only person you are ultimately destined to become is the person you decide to become.

What Can Derail Your Destiny?

It is sometimes difficult to understand how, despite enormous investments by families, communities, universities, lecturers, friends, governments and indeed God’s blessings, some young people still fail to realize their potential. The reality is that there are many challenges that can derail one’s journey.

First, there are personal challenges. These may include financial pressures, mental and physical health challenges, personal relationships and other difficulties that may affect your concentration and progress.

Secondly, there are academic challenges. University education is demanding. You will encounter difficult courses, assignments, examinations and academic expectations. There will be moments when you feel challenged. Challenges are not necessarily signs that you are incapable. Sometimes, they are opportunities to discover how strong, creative and resilient you can become. Do not give up.

Thirdly, there are social and systemic challenges. Young people today face numerous pressures relating to identity, peer influence and vulnerability to destructive activities. You may encounter political pressure, negative peer influence, harmful ideologies and people who may want to use you for purposes that do not contribute to your future. You must learn to make wise choices.

Remember: not every opportunity is a good opportunity, and not every friend will lead you in the right direction.

Your decisions today will shape your tomorrow.

A Few Things to Remember About University Life

Dear Freshers,

University is one of the most exciting and important environments in which a young person can find themselves. You are young, energetic and full of potential. You have freedom and access to a wide variety of opportunities.

The University is, in many ways, a living laboratory.

It is a place where ideas are tested.

It is a place where friendships are formed.

It is a place where careers begin.

It is a place where future leaders are shaped.

It is a place where you may meet lifelong friends, professional colleagues and, perhaps, even your future life partners.

But let me remind you that freedom without responsibility can be dangerous. Enjoy university life, but never forget why you came here. You came here to prepare for your future.

How Do You Actualize Your Destiny?

Allow me to share a few important principles that I believe will help you make the most of your time at Kibabii University.

Brand Yourself

In today’s world, your personal brand matters.

How do you present yourself?

How do you dress?

How do you groom yourself?

How do you communicate?

What values do you stand for?

What do people associate with your name?

Your name is your identity, and your reputation will travel ahead of you.

Throughout history, great individuals have built names associated with particular achievements and values; people such as Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar and Nelson Mandela. Ask yourself: What will my name stand for?

You may have come from a humble background, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Your background should not, however, become an excuse for failing to pursue a better future. Your starting point does not have to determine your finishing point.

Add Value to Yourself

You joined the University with certain qualifications, but do not leave here with exactly the same capacity you had when you arrived. If you entered with an excellent academic record, challenge yourself to become even better.

Add value to yourself.

Acquire additional knowledge.

Develop new skills.

Build competencies beyond your degree programme.

Learn how to communicate effectively.

Develop leadership skills.

Learn digital and technological skills.

Become innovative.

Read widely.

The world is becoming increasingly competitive, and your degree certificate alone may not always be enough. What will distinguish you is the combination of your academic qualification, skills, character, creativity and ability to solve problems.

By the time you leave Kibabii University, you should be a better, more capable and more confident person than the one who entered through our gates today.

Take Care of Your Personal Well-being

Success means very little if you lose yourself along the way.

Take care of your physical and mental well-being.

Eat properly.

Rest adequately.

Manage stress.

Seek help when you need it.

Maintain a healthy balance in your life.

Avoid unnecessary conflicts and situations that can destroy your peace and distract you from your goals.

A healthy mind and a healthy body are important foundations for academic and personal success.

Embrace Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Do not limit your thinking to employment alone.

Look around you and identify problems that can be turned into opportunities.

Think creatively.

Develop entrepreneurial skills.

Innovate.

Create value.

However, I must emphasize that entrepreneurship must always be legal, ethical and responsible. Never engage in activities that destroy your life or the lives of others. Use your knowledge and creativity to build yourself and contribute positively to society.

Avoid Procrastination

One of the greatest enemies of success is procrastination.

Many dreams die because people constantly say:

“I will do it tomorrow.”

Time is precious.

There is a saying that time is like a river—you cannot touch the same water twice because the water that has already passed will never pass again.

Take advantage of every moment.

Do not postpone your assignments unnecessarily.

Do not wait until examinations are around the corner before you begin studying.

Do not postpone important decisions about your future.

The time you waste today is an opportunity you may never recover tomorrow.

Manage Your Time Wisely

University life offers many activities competing for your attention.

There will be classes.

Assignments.

Social activities.

Sports.

Entertainment.

Student leadership.

Friends.

And many other opportunities.

You must therefore learn the art of smart time management.

Build a daily routine.

Plan your schedule.

Set priorities.

Use checklists.

Know what must be done and when it must be done.

A person who manages time well is already taking control of his or her destiny.

Take Your Academic Work Seriously

You are here first and foremost because of your academic journey.

Enjoy your classes.

Participate actively.

Ask questions.

Read widely.

Never make a habit of skipping classes.

Start your assignments early.

Prepare adequately for examinations.

Seek clarification whenever you do not understand something.

Your lecturers are here to guide you, but they cannot study on your behalf.

The responsibility for your academic success rests with you.

Take your studies seriously from the very first day.

Build a Reliable Social Support System

Human beings do not succeed entirely alone.

Build meaningful friendships.

Surround yourself with people who inspire you.

Maintain relationships with people who can encourage you when things become difficult.

Be supportive to others as well.

Learn to share.

Learn to cooperate.

Learn to work with people from different backgrounds.

The friendships and networks you build at the University may become some of the most valuable relationships in your life.

It would be unfortunate if, after spending four years at the University, you had nothing meaningful to show for your time here.

It would be unfortunate to leave the University and begin blaming your relatives, your friends, your lecturers, the staff, the Government and everybody else.

Take responsibility for your life.

Take responsibility for your choices.

Take responsibility for your future.

Kibabii University will provide opportunities.

Your lecturers will teach and guide you.

The University administration will create an enabling environment.

Your parents and guardians will continue to support you.

But no one can live your life for you.

No one can attend your classes for you.

No one can make your decisions for you.

No one can build your future for you.

That responsibility is yours.

As you begin this new chapter of your lives, dream big.

Believe in yourself.
