Kibabii University and Rongo University Champion Reading Culture Through Library Seminar and Book Donation Initiative

Kibabii University, in collaboration with Rongo University, hosted a two-day seminar on 10^th and 11^th June 2026 aimed at promoting a reading culture, strengthening library management practices, and enhancing knowledge sharing among schools and community libraries. The annual initiative, which launched in 2019, seeks to support the devolution of knowledge through book donations and capacity-building programmes for teacher librarians. The training brought together teacher librarians and representatives from thirty five (35) secondary schools and community libraries across Bungoma County.

The training focused on practical aspects of library management, including sorting and cataloguing books, accessioning and stamping materials, maintaining accession registers, ensuring book security and accessibility, acknowledging donors, sustaining library growth, and inducting new library users. Participants were further encouraged to embrace best practices that enhance the effective management and utilization of library resources.

As part of efforts to promote lifelong learning and community-based knowledge sharing, Kibabii University proposed the establishment of a mentorship programme for teacher librarians and the expansion of accessible library services to village communities.

Speaking during the seminar, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs) Prof. Joshua Ogendo underscored the critical role libraries play in advancing education, literacy, and community development.

Facilitators noted that a significant proportion of the books distributed through the programme are donated by partners in the United States and subsequently allocated to schools and community libraries to support learning and literacy development. Participants also discussed challenges affecting the growth and utilization of libraries, including the absence of library facilities in some schools, inadequate recognition and employment of librarians, and the declining reading culture among learners.

The event culminated in the official flagging off of books for distribution to participating schools and community libraries, led by Prof. Joshua Ogendo alongside Prof. Julius Maiyo and the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration, Finance and Development), Prof. John Makokha, among other members of the University Management.

Kibabii University Participates in St. Joseph’s Boys (JOBO) Careers and Industrial Fair

Kibabii University participated in the Annual Careers and Industrial Fair held on 5^th June 2026 at St. Joseph’s Boys Senior School (JOBO), Kitale. The event brought together professionals, institutions of higher learning, and organizations from various sectors to provide students with valuable career guidance and information on academic and professional opportunities. The University was represented by the Registrar (Academic Affairs), Sr. Dr. Jacklyne O. Alari, alongside officers from the Admissions Office.

The fair, hosted by St. Joseph’s Boys Senior School, which has a student population of approximately 3,500 learners, attracted participation from several secondary schools and stakeholders from diverse professional fields. It aimed to expose students to a broad spectrum of career options while helping them understand the educational pathways and skills required for success in different professions.

The programme commenced with a career guidance session led by the school’s Career Master, who underscored the importance of informed career planning and decision-making. Presentations were subsequently made by representatives from universities, colleges, and industry organizations on opportunities in fields such as medicine, engineering, aviation, business, information technology, education, law, and the arts.

Students also visited exhibition booths where they accessed career guidance materials and information on academic programmes offered by participating institutions. Interactive engagements with professionals provided learners with an opportunity to seek clarification on career-related issues and gain practical insights into various occupations and industry trends.

At the Kibabii University exhibition stand, prospective students received information on the University’s academic programmes, admission requirements, scholarship opportunities, and student support services. University representatives also guided learners on career pathways aligned with their interests, abilities, and academic strengths.

Kibabii University Readies to Host National Music Festivals as Government Delegation Conducts Inspection Tour

Kibabii University is making final preparations to host the 2026 National Music Festivals following an inspection and assessment visit by a joint delegation from the National Government and the Bungoma County Government on Thursday, 4^th June 2026.

The delegation paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor to evaluate the University’s readiness to host the prestigious annual event, which is scheduled to take place from 1st to 10th August 2026. The National Music Festivals are expected to bring together participants from Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres, primary and secondary schools, teacher training colleges, and universities from across the country.

According to the organizers, the festival is expected to attract approximately 30,000 students and accompanying officials from various educational institutions. Participants are scheduled to report on 1^st August, while the official opening ceremony will be held on 2^nd August 2026 and presided over by the Governor of Bungoma County, H.E. Kenneth Lusaka.

During the meeting, discussions centred on key logistical and operational requirements necessary for the successful hosting of the event. These included accommodation capacity, security arrangements, availability of social amenities, accessibility of performance venues and halls, transport infrastructure, healthcare services, and the University’s overall preparedness.

Speaking during the visit, Mr. Nelson Sifuna, Head of the Directorate of Field Coordination and Co-Curricular Activities at the Ministry of Education and leader of the delegation, commended Kibabii University for accepting to host the prestigious national event. He expressed confidence in the University’s capacity to deliver a successful festival and encouraged the university community to uphold the highest standards of organization, professionalism, and hospitality.

Mr. Sifuna noted that previous host institutions had set commendable benchmarks and challenged Kibabii University to build upon that legacy by delivering an exceptional experience for participants and guests.

“Beyond promoting artistic talent and cultural exchange, the festival is expected to stimulate local economic activity through increased demand for accommodation, transport, food services, and other business opportunities. It will also enhance the visibility of both Bungoma County and Kibabii University at the national level,” he observed.

The festival activities are expected to culminate in the State Concert on 13^th August 2026, which is anticipated to be held at the Bungoma State Lodge and graced by the President of the Republic of Kenya, Dr. William Samoei Ruto.

Kibabii University Hosts Innovation Forum on Artificial Intelligence for Reproductive Health in Africa

Kibabii University, through the Directorate of Research and Innovation, hosted an innovation forum on 4^th June 2026 under the theme “Artificial Intelligence for Reproductive Health in Africa.” The forum brought together University Management, researchers, innovators, healthcare stakeholders, and representatives from the Bungoma County Government to explore how emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies can be leveraged to address reproductive health challenges and improve healthcare outcomes across the continent.

The event was chaired by the Chairperson, Department of Nursing Dr. Lucy Namusonge and featured a presentation by a team of young innovators led by Wilson Ndambuki. The team showcased REPAIR-AI, an innovative AI-powered reproductive health platform designed to support women in identifying potential reproductive health risks and accessing timely, evidence-based health information.

During the presentation, the innovators demonstrated the platform’s multi-channel architecture comprising a web-based application, a mobile application, and a USSD service. The integrated approach is aimed at enhancing accessibility and inclusivity by reaching users with varying levels of digital connectivity. Through the platform, users can input relevant health information and receive AI-generated assessments and personalized recommendations to support informed decision-making and facilitate early health interventions.

According to the development team, REPAIR-AI seeks to contribute to the reduction of maternal mortality and adverse reproductive health outcomes by improving access to reproductive health education, risk assessment tools, and personalized health guidance. The innovation is expected to bridge information gaps and empower women with timely and accurate reproductive health support.

Speaking during the forum, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Planning, Research and Innovation), Prof. Julius Kiprop Maiyo, commended the innovators for their creativity and commitment to developing solutions that address real societal challenges. He reaffirmed the University’s commitment to promoting research excellence, innovation, and entrepreneurship among students and early-career researchers, noting that emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence have immense potential to transform healthcare delivery and improve the quality of life in communities.

Similarly, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Prof. Joshua Ogendo, encouraged the innovators to embrace interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork in refining the platform. He emphasized that partnerships across different fields of expertise are critical in enhancing the scientific rigor, scalability, and long-term impact of innovative solutions.

Representatives from the Bungoma County Government expressed support for the initiative and underscored the importance of strengthening collaborations between academia, healthcare providers, policymakers, and technology developers. They noted that such partnerships are essential in facilitating the adoption, effectiveness, and sustainability of AI-enabled healthcare solutions.

Kibabii University Receives KSh 130,000 Award from Equity Bank Following Outstanding Performance at Kenya Drama and Film Festivals 2026

Kibabii University has received a trophy and a cheque worth KES 130,000 from Equity Bank in recognition of its exceptional performance at the Kenya Drama and Film Festivals (KDFF) 2026, held in Nyeri from 5^th to 17^th April 2026. The University’s Drama Team emerged as the national winner in the Documentary Production category under the University section. In addition, the team achieved remarkable success in Modern Dance, where it was crowned the overall national winner, earning an invitation to perform at State House in recognition of its outstanding artistic excellence.

In the Film Category, Kibabii University emerged with the best documentary making it to be nominated as the Best Documentary of the Year by Equity Bank while in the Modern Creative Dance Category, the University scooped the following awards;

Most Creative
Best Dance Routine
Best Composed Music

The award from Equity Bank was presented to Kibabii University for emerging the best institution in categories sponsored by the bank during the festival. The trophy and cheque were formally handed over to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo, on Tuesday, 2^nd June 2026, by an Equity Bank delegation led by the Bungoma Branch Manager, Mr. Geoffrey Wanyonyi.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony, the Vice Chancellor expressed his gratitude to Equity Bank for its continued support of youth talent development and the creative arts. He commended the bank for recognizing and rewarding excellence among young people and for its partnership with institutions of higher learning. He further congratulated the Drama Team, its trainers, and the entire University community for bringing honor to Kibabii University through their exemplary performance at the national festival. He reaffirmed the University’s commitment to strengthening its collaboration with Equity Bank and other stakeholders in promoting innovation, creativity, and talent development among students.

Kibabii University Student Leaders Undergo Transformative Leadership Training at KSG

Twenty-seven (27) student leaders from the 9^th SOKU Leadership of Kibabii University attended a two-day mentorship workshop held from 7^th to 8^th May 2026 at the Kenya School of Government (KSG), Lower Kabete, Nairobi, under the theme “Transformative and Adaptive Leadership.” The workshop provided an important platform for the student leaders to learn, interact, and strengthen their leadership, governance, and service delivery skills.

For many years, Kibabii University student leaders from have undergone leadership training at KSG owing to the institution’s strong reputation in nurturing competent leaders for effective service in both the public and corporate sectors.

The training was officially opened by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo, who encouraged the student leaders to embrace servant leadership. He reminded them that true leadership is demonstrated through humility, responsibility, accountability, and service to others. He also congratulated the leaders on their successful election held on 27^th March 2026.

Key addresses were made by various members of the University Management including; The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs) Prof. Joshua Ogendo, The Registrar (Academic Affairs) Sr. Dr. Jacklyne Alari, Finance Officer Dr. Benjamin Oduori, and the Chairman of the Students Electoral Committee Prof. Robert Kati. Their presentations focused on key areas such as academic procedures and policies, effective leadership and governance, budgeting and financial planning, youth leadership competencies, mental health, and emotional well-being.

The student leaders were also addressed by the Director General of KSG, Prof. Nurah Mohammed, who urged them to work together despite their differences and to support one another in effectively serving the student community. The sessions at KSG were also facilitated internally by Mr. Peter Quest and Mr. James G. Kamau, who guided the leaders through engaging, interactive, and insightful discussions.

The student leaders were accompanied by the In-Charge, Dr. Leunita Makila, the Deputy Dean of Students, Dr. Benson Nasongo, and the Office Administrator, Ms. Linnet Nabutola.

Kibabii University and Safaricom Partner in Tree Planting Initiative in Kopsiro, Mt. Elgon

Kibabii University, in partnership with Safaricom and other stakeholders, on Thursday, 21^st May 2026 conducted a tree planting exercise in Kopsiro Sub County as part of ongoing efforts to promote environmental conservation, ecosystem restoration, and climate action. The exercise planted over 5,000 trees within the designated area, contributing to the broader national environmental restoration agenda aligned with Kenya’s target of planting 15 billion trees by the year 2032.

Earlier in the day, Safaricom environmentalist Owen Ombima paid a courtesy call to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo, to discuss the ongoing collaboration between Kibabii University and Safaricom in advancing environmental conservation and sustainability initiatives.

The initiative forms part of Safaricom’s broader multi-pillar environmental sustainability strategy aimed at achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050. Through its Biodiversity Restoration Programme, the company has committed KES 15 million toward mitigating the environmental impact associated with network expansion activities. The programme seeks to plant 250,000 indigenous and fruit trees across 7,000 locations hosting Safaricom’s Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) over a two-year period. Implemented in collaboration with both public and private institutions, the initiative aims to balance the growing demand for digital connectivity with environmental responsibility and biodiversity conservation.

The Kopsiro tree planting exercise brought together a wide range of stakeholders from educational institutions, as well as the public and private sectors, reflecting a strong spirit of collaboration in advancing environmental sustainability. Among those present were representatives from the national government, officers from the County Commissioner’s office, the Area Chief, officials from the Ministry of Education, and the Sub-County Director of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). They were joined by members of the Kopsiro community who also actively participated in the exercise, demonstrating a shared commitment to environmental stewardship.

Kibabii University was represented at the exercise by the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration, Finance and Development), Prof. John Makokha, who attended on behalf of the Vice Chancellor. He was accompanied by University staff and students who actively participated in the tree planting exercise.
