Kibabii University Hosts German Delegation to Explore Energy and Environmental Research Partnership

Kibabii University on 14^th August, 2026 hosted a delegation from Germany led by Prof. Dr. Eberhard Rothfuß, Chair of Social and Population Geography at the University of Bayreuth, and Dr. Özge Dolunay from the Institute of New Energy Systems (InES). The delegation was received at the Vice Chancellor’s Boardroom by Prof. Samuel Mbuguah, Director of Planning and Organization Performance, who represented the Vice Chancellor. The visit focused on exploring opportunities for collaboration in renewable energy, environmental conservation, sustainable resource management and community development, particularly within the Trans Nzoia-Mount Elgon-Cherang’any Hills region.

The engagement was facilitated through Rural African Matters, following discussions between Dr. Dolunay, Prof. Rothfuß and partners on potential research initiatives relevant to the region. The discussions highlighted the importance of combining social and geographical perspectives with renewable energy expertise to develop practical solutions to environmental and community challenges.

During the meeting, Kibabii University and the German partners agreed to formalize their collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The proposed partnership will provide a framework for student and staff mobility, joint research and proposal development, curriculum development, as well as internship and industrial attachment opportunities. The collaboration is expected to strengthen knowledge exchange and create opportunities for students and staff to engage in international research and academic programmes, while supporting research that responds to emerging energy and environmental challenges in the region. The partnership builds on Kibabii University’s commitment to environmental conservation and regional development, including its involvement in initiatives aimed at restoring the Mount Elgon ecosystem.

Prof. Mbuguah reaffirmed the University’s commitment to expanding strategic international partnerships that create opportunities for research, innovation, academic exchange and community impact.

Principal Secretary Dr. Beatrice Inyangala Graces Kenya Music Festivals 2026 at Kibabii University

The Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, on Monday, 10^th August 2026 graced the ongoing Kenya Music Festivals 2026 and commended the University for its exemplary hosting of the national event.

The Principal Secretary underscored the important role of music and the creative arts in education, talent development, cultural preservation and national cohesion, noting that such platforms provide learners with opportunities to identify, nurture and showcase their talents.

Now in their second week, the Festival has attracted a record number of participants, with universities alone presenting approximately 8,000 participants. The festival brings together learners and participants from pre-primary, primary, junior and senior schools, TVET institutions, universities and other organizations.

The event has provided a vibrant platform for participants to showcase diverse cultures, languages and artistic abilities, including performances by learners with disabilities. Participants from the Coast, North Eastern, Nyanza, Rift Valley and other regions of Kenya, as well as parts of Uganda, have further enhanced cultural exchange and national integration.

During her visit, Dr. Inyangala paid a courtesy call on the University Management before joining participants and stakeholders at the festival. She was accompanied by the Chairman of the Kenya Music Festivals, Prof. Fredrick Ngala, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Teachers Service Commission, Ms. Eveleen Mitei, among other education stakeholders.

Prof. Ngala briefed the Principal Secretary on the progress of the festival, noting that the 2026 edition had recorded the highest number of participants compared with previous years. He commended Kibabii University for its effective coordination of the event, particularly in providing suitable venues, security and health services, and described the University as an ideal host for the national festival.

Representing the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joshua Ogendo expressed the University’s appreciation to the Ministry of Education for entrusting Kibabii University with the responsibility of hosting the 2026 Kenya Music Festivals. He also commended the Ministry, festival organizers, University staff and other stakeholders for their collaboration in ensuring the smooth running of the event.

In her remarks, Dr. Inyangala emphasized that music and the creative arts should be viewed as an integral part of education rather than merely as entertainment. As Kenya continues to implement the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), she observed that festivals such as these provide important opportunities to identify and develop learners’ talents and competencies while helping them explore appropriate career pathways.

Dr. Inyangala further applauded Kibabii University and the festival organizers for their efforts in delivering a successful national event. She noted that the approach demonstrated through the Kenya Music Festivals could serve as a model for other ministries and public institutions seeking to strengthen talent development and meaningful engagement with young people.

The Kenya Music Festivals 2026 will culminate on 14^th August 2026 with the State Concert at the Bungoma State Lodge.

Kibabii University Welcomes Returning Erasmus+ Exchange Student from Norway and Bids Farewell to Outgoing Participant

Kibabii University welcomed back Mr. Granton Omuse Mungau, who completed his Spring Semester exchange programme at NLA University College in Norway, and bid farewell to Ms. Bahati Ingcen Masinde, who is set to undertake the Autumn Semester exchange at the same institution under the Erasmus+ Mobility Programme.

The two students, accompanied by Erasmus+ Mobility Programme team members Prof. Robert Kati and Mr. Onex Opati, paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Planning, Partnerships, Research and Innovation), Prof. Julius Maiyo. Prof. Maiyo congratulated him on successfully completing the programme and encouraged him to share his experiences with fellow students to inspire greater participation in international exchange opportunities.

Addressing the outgoing student Ms. Bahati, Prof. Maiyo urged her to embrace every opportunity for academic and personal growth, represent Kibabii University with excellence and integrity, and serve as a worthy ambassador of the University throughout her stay in Norway.

Following the courtesy call, Mr. Opati, together with previous beneficiaries of the Erasmus+ Mobility Programme Ms. Masai Faith Henzen, Mr. Kiboi Oscar Segero and Mr. Granton Omuse Mungau conducted a pre-departure orientation for Ms. Bahati. The induction covered practical aspects of studying and living in Norway, including adapting to Bergen’s changing weather and seasons, managing culture shock, understanding Norwegian customs and expectations, and making the most of the country’s student-centred learning environment.

Ms. Bahati was also encouraged to embrace the opportunity to experience Norway’s rich cultural heritage, breathtaking natural scenery, strong commitment to sustainability, and diverse international student community while proudly representing Kibabii University.

The Erasmus+ Mobility Programme continues to advance Kibabii University’s internationalization agenda by providing students with opportunities for global exposure, cross-cultural learning, academic collaboration, and personal growth.

Kibabii University Student Secures a one year IAESTE Internship in Switzerland

Wilson Ndambuki, a student in the Department of Computer Science, School of Computing and Informatics has been selected for a one year internship in Switzerland under the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) programme.

Ndambuki is scheduled to depart for Switzerland on 7^th August 2026, becoming the University’s second outbound IAESTE intern in recent weeks, following the departure of Dickson Kiprotich Lomol to Burundi.

During his internship, Ndambuki will be hosted by the Institute for Interactive Technologies (IIT) at the FHNW – University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland in Windisch. The Institute is a multidisciplinary computer science research and innovation centre that collaborates closely with industry to design cutting-edge solutions in requirements engineering, develop innovative interfaces and interactive environments, create immersive digital experiences, and generate insights through intelligent data visualization.

The placement offers Ndambuki an opportunity to gain practical experience in globally competitive fields, including Human-Computer Interaction, Extended Reality, Software Engineering, Computer Graphics, Information Visualization, and Machine Learning, while working alongside leading researchers and industry professionals.

Ahead of his departure, Ndambuki paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo, who congratulated him on the achievement and wished him success during his internship. The Vice Chancellor described the opportunity as a reflection of the quality of education and talent nurtured at Kibabii University and encouraged the student to be an exemplary ambassador of the University and Kenya by upholding the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and excellence throughout his stay in Switzerland.

Also present during the meeting were the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Partnerships, Research and Innovation), Prof. Julius Maiyo; the Coordinator, Linkages and International Affairs, Dr. Jacinta Mutwiwa; and the Chairperson of the Department of Computer Science, Dr. Yonah Etene.

Kibabii University Hosts Busitema University Delegation for Strategic Partnership Talks

Kibabii University hosted a delegation from Busitema University on 16^th July, 2026 for discussions aimed at strengthening institutional collaboration between the two universities. The delegation from Busitema University was led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Paul Waako, and included the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Associate Prof. Saphina Biira; Dr. Joseph Lwangaga, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology; Associate Prof. David Olema, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Education; Dr. Godfrey Lubadde, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Sciences; and Ms. Harriet Nabirye, Principal Internationalization and Partnerships Officer.

The meeting brought together officials from both institutions to deliberate on strategic areas of partnership, with a focus on advancing teaching, research, innovation, and community engagement. Key areas of collaboration discussed included joint research and innovation, staff and student exchange programmes, academic programme development, capacity building initiatives, innovation and entrepreneurship, and community engagement.

A key highlight of the visit was the formal exchange of the duly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which reaffirmed the commitment of both institutions to fostering a long-term strategic partnership. The MoU is expected to provide a structured framework for implementing the agreed areas of collaboration.

The meeting resolved to establish a joint implementation committee to coordinate collaborative activities, develop an implementation plan outlining timelines and priority actions, identify priority projects for immediate implementation, facilitate regular communication and progress review meetings, and mobilize resources to support joint programmes and initiatives.

The visit concluded with both institutions reaffirming their commitment to maintaining close collaboration and ensuring the effective implementation of the agreed areas of cooperation, marking a significant step forward in the partnership between Kibabii University and Busitema University.

Kibabii University Hosts Swiss Biomedical Sciences Student for International Clinical Internship

On 22^nd July 2026, Kibabii University officially received Ms. Amélie Fellrath, a Biomedical Sciences student from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, as she commenced her eight-week clinical internship under the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) programme. The internship reflects Kibabii University’s commitment to fostering international academic collaboration, cultural exchange, and experiential learning by providing students with valuable clinical and professional training opportunities. During a courtesy call to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo, Ms. Fellrath was accompanied by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Planning, Partnerships, Research and Innovation), Prof. Julius Maiyo; the Director of Partnerships and Linkages, Prof. Paul Obino; the Coordinator of Linkages and International Affairs, Dr. Jacinta Mutwiwa; and Ms. Catherine Mutonyi from the School of Nursing.

The Vice Chancellor commended Ms. Fellrath for her professionalism and dedication during her internship at Bungoma County Referral Hospital, noting that the University had received positive feedback regarding her performance upon completion clinical rotations in Pediatrics, Maternity, Gynecology and Surgery, the Surgical Theatre, as well as community health outreach activities.

Ms. Fellrath thanked Kibabii University and Bungoma County Referral Hospital for the support and hospitality extended to her throughout her stay in Kenya. She described the internship as a valuable learning experience and pledged to serve as an ambassador for the University and Kenya upon her return to Switzerland.

The internship is part of the ongoing IAESTE partnership between Kibabii University and the University of Fribourg. Last year, the University hosted another Swiss student under the programme, while Kibabii University is expected to send Mr. Wilson Ndambuki to Switzerland next month for a one-year internship under the reciprocal exchange arrangement.

Kibabii University’s REPAIR-AI Innovation steals the show at the Data Science Africa (DSA) Workshop 2026, at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda

Kibabii University scooped the top award in the recently concluded continental competition dubbed “AI for Reproductive Health in Africa Innovation Challenge”, jointly organized by the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) and African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC) under the Hub for Artificial Intelligence in Maternal Sexual and Reproductive Health (HASH) Project. Competing in Track I: Access to Comprehensive Early Pregnancy Loss Care, Kibabii University team, led by Dr. Lucy N. Namusonge, presented the winning innovation: the REPAIR-AI (Reproductive Early Pregnancy AI Response System) during the Data Science Africa (DSA) Workshop held at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda on 24^th and 25^th July 2026. REPAIR-AI is an Artificial Intelligence-powered maternal health platform designed to improve the prevention, early detection, referral, management and follow-up of Early Pregnancy Loss (EPL). REPAIR AI offers real-time solutions to major health system challenges such as delayed diagnosis of pregnancy complications, fragmented referrals, limited access to specialist care and psycho-social support for affected mothers among other challenges. The REPAIR AI adopts a systems-thinking approach involving mothers, community health promoters (CHPs) and healthcare providers to improve maternal health outcomes.

The live REPAIR AI solution comprises a website platform, mobile application, AI-enabled clinical decision support, smart referral concept, follow-up mechanisms and more importantly, a real-time surveillance capability. This unique innovation generated significant interest @DSA 2026 due to its practical application of AI in addressing maternal health challenges in Africa.

The REPAIR-AI team had the opportunity to showcase the innovation before an international audience comprising AI researchers, clinicians, public health experts, innovators, development partners and technology experts from across Africa and beyond. The presentation provided Kibabii University with an excellent platform to demonstrate its growing capacity in data science, AI research, digital health innovation and multidisciplinary problem-solving. Track 1 winners, REPAIR AI team receives USD 1,350 cheque at DSA 2026

Areas of Improvement and Roadmap to Scale Up

The presentation of REPAIR AI prototype at the DSA 2026 Workshop generated considerable interest with the following areas identified for improvement before large-scale deployment; additional software development, AI model optimization and validation, interoperability with existing health information systems, clinical validation studies, cybersecurity enhancement, regulatory approvals, pilot implementation funding and cloud computing infrastructure. To capitalize on the momentum generated during the Data Science Africa workshop, the REPAIR AI team intends to immediately pursue the following:

Prototype Refinement: improve the AI algorithms, enhance user interface and experience, expand mobile application functionality, strengthen clinical decision-support capabilities and improve multilingual support.
Clinical Validation: Conduct pilot studies in selected health facilities to validate AI recommendations, evaluate diagnostic accuracy, assess usability and measure maternal health outcomes.
Forging Strategic Partnerships: KIBU to establish strategic collaborations and partnerships with Ministry of Health (Kenya), County of Governments (Kenya), Referral Hospitals, Community Health Programmes, Universities and Research Institutions, Technology companies and International development agencies.
Develop REPAIR AI Version 2.0: Incorporating predictive analytics, ultrasound image interpretation, chatbot support, multilingual AI assistant, wearable device integration, electronic medical record integration and automated referral tracking.
Regulatory Compliance: Undertake ethical approvals, data protection, MOH approvals, AI governance compliance and clinical software certification.
Develop Sustainable Commercialization Strategy: KIBU will develop sustainability model through licensing, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), public-private partnerships, County Governments adoption, health facilities’ subscriptions and development partner-supported implementation.
Targeted Capacity Building: KIBU will carry out REPAIR AI training to clinicians, nurses, community health promoters, health records officers, ICT personnel and county health managers.
Research and Publications: The REPAIR AI team will generate evidence through peer-reviewed publications, conference / workshop presentations, postgraduate research projects, implementation science studies and impact evaluations.

Kibabii University Receives Global Attention

The successful presentation of REPAIR AI @DSA 2026 has enhanced the University’s profile and visibility in AI research, digital health innovation, maternal and reproductive health research, international research collaborations and Innovation and commercialization.

The project demonstrates the University’s commitment to translating research into practical solutions that address societal challenges. The recognition places Kibabii University among institutions contributing innovative AI solutions towards achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).

The DSA 2026 workshop offered KIBU team opportunity for valuable engagements with AI researchers, public health experts, data scientists, software developers, international universities, digital health innovators and development partners from across Africa. Arising from the interactions KIBU will pursue opportunities for collaborative research, technical mentorship, prototype refinement, multi-centre pilot studies, grant partnerships and continental scale up of REPAIR AI.

Conclusion

The Data Science Africa Workshop provided an exceptional platform for showcasing Kibabii University’s research excellence. Winning Track 1 of the Health AI for Social Good (HASH) Project is a significant achievement that highlights the University’s capacity to develop innovative, technology-driven solutions addressing pressing public health challenges.
