Pencil

2016-04-06T23:17:00.003+08:00

A pencil/ˈpɛnsəl/ is a writing implement or art medium constructed of a narrow, solid pigment core inside a protective casing which prevents the core from being broken or leaving marks on the user’s hand during use.

Pencils create marks by physical abrasion, leaving behind a trail of solid core material that adheres to a sheet of paper or other surface. They are distinct from pens, which instead disperse a trail of liquid or gel ink that stains the light colour of the paper.

Most pencil cores are made of graphite mixed with a clay binder which leaves grey or black marks that can be easily erased. Graphite pencils are used for both writing and drawing and result in durable markings: though writing is easily removable with an eraser, it is otherwise resistant to moisture, most chemicals, ultraviolet radiation, and natural aging. Other types of pencil core are less widely used, such as charcoal pencils, which are mainly used by artists for drawing and sketching. Colour pencils are sometimes used by teachers or editors to correct submitted texts, but are typically regarded as art supplies, especially those with waxy core binders that tend to smear on paper instead of erasing. Grease pencils have a softer, crayon-like waxy core that can leave marks on smooth surfaces such as glass or porcelain.

The most common type of pencil casing is of thin wood, usually hexagonal in section but sometimes cylindrical, permanently bonded to the core. Similar permanent casings may be constructed of other materials such as plastic or paper. To use the pencil, the casing must be carved or peeled off to expose the working end of the core as a sharp point. Mechanical pencils have more elaborate casings which support mobile pieces of pigment core that can be extended or retracted through the casing tip as needed. (source from wikipedia)

2016 New Year's Resolution

2016-01-03T12:30:00.000+08:00

What is New Year's resolution? According to Wikipedia, "a New Year's resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person makes a promise to do an act of self-improvement or something slightly nice, such as opening doors for people beginning from New Year's Day^."

While everyone around you is thinking about what their resolutions will be, it's impossible to forget that another year has come and gone. But self-improvement don’t always have an arsenal of bad habits to give up, and forcing it doesn’t seem like the best way to enjoy the coming year. Below are my new year resolution as a designer:

Update resume & portfolio to meet industry standards
Take some times to inspire
Go against the grain & don’t follow design trends
Simplify your life & simplify your design.
Redesign something just for fun
Learn the basics of copywriting, advertising and marketing
Try out some sort of new online social media.
Take an extra class about design
Save for that dream computer I’ve always wanted
Try a color scheme I have never even imagined
Embrace Failure & don’t be afraid to make mistakes
Save more money!!!!

My first ever company team building which take place at Selesa Resort - 4th to 5th Dec 2015.

Came to office on usual time waiting for departure and arrived there around 10 am. Nice environment at Selesa Hillhomes Resort Bukit Tinggi which surrounded with green forest and mountains, a nice place to chill & relax actually.

At night after the session done, we gathered at one unit of apartment. everyone seems enjoy their time chatting to each other.

Overall, the team building is meant for general team bonding, boosting morale and motivation, creating unity & togetherness, building creativity & endurance and improves sense of belonging & ownership.

Thoughts on Design

2015-02-07T23:09:00.000+08:00

Last week, went across the article bout Paul Rand from a website.

Paul Rand (August 15, 1914 – November 26, 1996) was an American art director and graphic designer, best known for his corporate logo designs, including the logos for IBM, UPS, Enron, Morningstar, Inc., Westinghouse, ABC, and Steve Jobs’s NeXT. He was one of the first American commercial artists to embrace and practice the Swiss Style of graphic design. (Wikipedia, 2015)

Rand emphasizes the fruitful combination of cross-disciplinary curiosity, technical knowledge, and intuition in the creative problem-solving process.

" To achieve an effective solution to his problem, the designer must necessarily go through some sort of mental process. Conscious or not, he analyzes, interprets, formulates. He is aware of the scientific and technological developments in his own and kindred fields. He improvises, invents, or discovers new techniques and combinations. He co-ordinates and integrates his material so that he may restate his problem in terms of ideas, signs, symbols, pictures. He unifies, simplifies, and eliminates superfluities. He symbolizes — abstracts from his material by association and analogy. He intensifies and reinforces his symbol with appropriate accessories to achieve clarity and interest. He draws upon instinct and intuition. He considers the spectator, his feelings and predilections. " – Paul Rand

I remember that when i was in the age 20, I only know how to copy and paste. 100% copycat. At that time with the limitation of my design skill, i did not have own thinking. Every time the assignments were given, i just go pick some reference from the net, trace it, follow back the reference and submit without thinking any cause.

At the mid-age of 20s, I began to learn how to create thing by not copying 100%. Firstly, i will start with research, get as much information and reference. Then from there based on the data and reference that I got, I will create something, try not follow as much as possible. This is so called modification. Now days there’s hard to find 100% original idea/design, usually most of the thing based on reference.

During these period, I start like to travel around even near to my house. I began learn how to observe other places’ local culture arts. For example, Chinese like red, Indian like purple.

A successful designer must have an eye for design and good observation skills. It is the ability to see and observe that will be an added value. These are my thought about design.

Relection of Year 2014

2015-01-12T21:55:00.000+08:00

It’s the moment of year ends and starts again. the moment when, like everyone on earth, take years resolutions. All you need is a couple of hours of quiet time, a pen and a notebook or journal. You can also use your computer but I find you get a deeper connection when you write by hand.

2014 was a year of win and lose. many laughs and tears took place. different kinds of challenges and experiences been tasted by me no matter is sweet, sour, spicy or bitter. But at least i grown up and learn move forward smartly.

This year marks my forth years of working here since after my bachelor degree. I am lucky that i have a good boss and a group of helpful colleagues. With my current job position which i need to one leg kick everything, I tend to learn more things. time management and decision making is so important. I found out that my touch-up images skill is getting improved. learn to interact directly & indirectly with people. I would like to thank everyone for supporting me no matter what. Without you all, I am not the one am right nowI.

If opportunity allows me, i would like to do some creative business perhaps. Like those pipit zakka or something that I can express my passion through design. Just hopping so. To be honest, it’s been a challenging year for me.

Luncheon

2014-12-28T23:06:00.000+08:00

During the end of the month 2014, it happens that one of my lecturer during college time, Sifu (formerly known as aSir) manage to contact me through LINE. After a very short conversation, we finally decided to meet up at Bukit Bintang area. During our luncheon, we been talking and recalled back our memory lane and sweet time during college time. We also managed to share and exchange our thoughts about designs. We had a good chit chat and luncheon served with wantan mee behind Bukit Bintang area.

Thinking back the chit-chat conversation between us, I think it is time for me to contribute my thoughts back to the world wide web which been very useful for me 24/7 all the time no matter during studies or works. I have to admit that only few people in this world can influence me besides my parents and Sifu is one of them. That’s the reason I am started this blog.

beef noodle vs chopsticks

2012-11-09T00:07:00.000+08:00

went to eat beef noodle at the first saturday of november to get some inspiration for my brain. while i was enjoying the heavenly tasted beef noodle in my imaginative world, suddenly a young Russian tourist asked permission from me for sharing the same table with me. so i just gave her a "yes" respond to her and she happily sat down and start order her drink. after some time her lunch order came. a chinese chicken kuewteow noodle soup.

what make me start observing her is when she used a pair of chopsticks to eat. she was trying hard to use them to eat. and she quite surprised me is that she deep the kuewteow on the soy sauce and eat. its so salty to be eaten. local people will not do that, maybe some are.....

then i begun to find out that the longer she use the chopsticks, the harder she ate. people around her including me who sat just right in front of her at the same table start observing her and she felt so shy. so i decided to teach her how to use the chopsticks.

even though the kopitiam boss offer her a fork, she still trying hard to use the chopsticks. at the really end, she gave up and use fork to eat.
