it’s been a while, but recently i’ve been back in the habit of wearing my hair wrapped at night much differently than i normally do. normally it’s put in a few quick and fat braids and then wrap my natural hair up but recently i’ve been wearing my hair wrapped high with the majority of the hair falling out of the top of my head wrap. i simply drop my head forward and basically wrap the base and sides of my hair. in the morning i can take my hair down and save more time by not having to undo braids. this is not my favorite way of wrapping my hair but if i’m too tired, this is what works and lately i’ve been worn out tired by the time i hit the sack at least four nights out of a seven day week.

anyway, not too long ago one night, i was standing in the mirror wrapping my hair for bed when, as usual, my mind starts to go everywhere thinking about everything but sleep – even though i’m utterly sleeply – i get some kind of freaky night-induced ADD creative, flashback type mind rage or something. i thought back to something a friend had asked when she came to my house early one morning before i’d taken my hair down from my nighttime wrap. she said:

FRIEND: walks in, drops her bags on the floor and looks up at my hair. oh I see you did the pineapple method.

ME: What?

FRIEND: Pineapple method. she motions at the top of my head

ME: Oh, this is just my head wrap, girl. I don’t know anything about that.

FRIEND: Yeah, they do that on YouTube.

ME: Ah, gotcha. Well, I’ve been doing this forever, never saw this on YouTube.

FRIEND: Oh, I thought that’s where you saw it.

ME: Nope. And that’s funny that you say that because my sister asked me if I liked “tension blow drying” my hair and I’ve been doing that since early 00′s. I just call it pulling my hair straight and running the blow dryer up and down my hair to dry. I didn’t have a name for it but it’s something she found on YouTube too.

FRIEND: What goes around comes around. There is nothing new under the sun.

my friend was right – there is nothing new under the sun and you’d be hard pressed to find anything – within any realm of life that is “new” as the definition stands…okay, maybe a star or a distant galaxy or something but even then in most cases that’s not really new – it’s just “another one of” what we already know to exist. as for my natural hair, i don’t plan on calling my head wrap at night the pineapple method or nor do i plan to call my blow drying technique – which i’m sure someone did WAY before me – the “tension method”, instead it will just be how i wrap my hair and how i blow dry it. and it’s not that i’m opposed to doing so, i just never have called my technique those things and i don’t see the reasoning in starting now. some parts of the natural hair game are just reincarnated. to some it’s new to others it’s just old news. what goes around comes around. it’s like the circle of natural hair life.

and i tell you no lye: relaxers linked to uterine fibroid tumors

before you start the side eye, let’s take a moment to really focus on what’s being stated here. we all know that there is so much more to be said and found out when it comes to this study but i do think it calls for a poignant note of pause.

we all know that black american women are more prone to fibroids and any other women in our culture. though i’ve never experienced fibroid trouble, i’ve had multiple relatives go through surgeries and one even had to have a hysterectomy because they were so uncontrollable. and yes, if you are wondering they were all relaxed – which, again, at this point, we have no idea how much that really means. i don’t have any thoughts about this study just yet because it begs more questions however, the FIRST thing i thought was:

“Is it possible that we as black women more prone to fibroids solely because of the HISTORY of the USE of relaxers?”

there have been numerous fibroid studies and one of the biggest hypothesis about fibroids is that black american women do not get the daily required amounts of vitamin d which in turn causes problems with fibroids.

the relaxer industry is not regulated by the fda and companies have been bottling up sodium hydroxide for years with no questions asked. we don’t know the long term effect that relaxers could have or are having on our bodies or children’s bodies. take for instance the food industry. for years, no one – as in the general public – made waves about all of the hormones in the food, but now that our daughters are having periods at seven and eight years old and more and more children are being born with autisim, people are finally trying to figure out the connection between the possible dangers of the synthetic hormones found in food if there is one. and as history has shown us, it often takes multiple generations for side effects to show up in populations.

there needs to be much more done with this study because if there is something here, this changes the meaning of creamy crack to something much more literal and no matter what side of the hair playing field you find yourself on, this is all something we will find hits a little too close to home.

It’s here! It’s here! Fashion Week is in full swing with New York wrapping up their festivities and the fashion exposition moving overseas. Catwalk queens and fashionistas have taken over New York, London, and Paris. I get so excited around this time of year. Fashion Week is what dreams are made of. The collections we see on the runway inspire the way we dress, makeup trends, and definitely hair styles. But have you ever noticed the shortage of kinks and curls on the catwalk? It’s not that models with our hair type don’t exist. There’s a different reason altogether. This brings us to our question of the day:

“How is natural hair treated on the runway?”

A few years ago when I first went natural, I thought my bad hair fashion days were over. I figured that if I showed up to a shoot or a show with short natural hair, there’s no way a stylist could mess it up. Well, I was wrong. One particular show put me over the edge. The producers knew that I was natural and seemed willing to leave my hair be, but less than an hour before show time they changed their minds. All the other models were getting slicked back ponytails, so the organizers thought my hair should be similar. WHAT?! I explained that “taming” my kinky hair would be a challenge, and that I preferred if they didn’t bother. They insisted. Next thing I know, three people are pulling and tugging at my hair and they were not being gentle. Blowdryers, flat irons, and hot combs are sizzling my curls away. I was in so much pain, that I couldn’t fight the tears. I trusted that these haircare professionals wouldn’t damage my hair, but they did… all for a 15 minute fashion show. After that nightmare, I promised myself something like that would never happen to my hair again.

Our hair is not the problem. In its natural state, our kinks will hold any style you try without hairspray, too many bobby pins, or even teasing. The real culprit is that many high fashion hairstylists don’t have much experience with natural hair. They may have learned about it briefly in cosmetology school, but that was it. Barely any hands-on training. So when a natural haired model sits in the chair to get her coif done, these stylists are stumped.

It’s not that fashion doesn’t like our hair. Waves, curls, and afros have served as inspiration for many fashion presentations from Louis Vuitton to United Bamboo. But kinks are not the standard on the runway. The majority of models walking for the world’s most famous fashion weeks have straight hair, whether it’s chemically altered, naturally straight, or hair extensions. If a model does arrive to a fashion show with natural hair, she must be prepared to style it herself, have her coils mistreated, or on the rare occasion have it taken care of by someone who actually knows our hair. Sometimes it’s easier to conform to the norm than rock what mother nature gave you.

Natural hair does have a future on the catwalk. Every year I see new curly and kinky models debut at fashion weeks from London to New York, and that’s inspiring. The more diverse models there are on the runway, the more haircare professionals will have to expand their working knowledge of different hair textures. Pretty soon I hope that out tresses will not be an anomaly in fashion, and others will celebrate our hair as we do.

the kiss of death: report claims 400 lipsticks contain lead [VIDEO]

i take my health very seriously. i work out, eat right and make sure that all of my numbers are low, and if you are anything like me, now it seems that we may need to keep track of our lead numbers too – lead in our lipsticks that is.

after reading about this study conducted by the fda in which they stated that 400 lipsticks were found to contain lead, i’m a little in shock and immediately think back to all those evenings when i walked home, stood in front of my vanity, ready to wash away that day’s face paint and my lipstick had all but vanished, worn off over cocktails, appetizers and main courses, with some of that color going right into my mouth with my food.

“We do not consider the lead levels we found in the lipsticks to be a safety concern. The lead levels we found are within the limits recommended by other public health authorities for lead in cosmetics.” – FDA

though this is disappointing, it should come as no surprise, as lead is allowed in candy and other digestible items that we eat. however, the campaign for safe cosmetics is all over this debacle and disagrees with the fda about the harm that lipstick lead could cause especially to pregnant women. they believe that the lead could build up over time – which is understandable since we reapply our lipsticks multiple times a day and some women start wearing lipstick as young as 16 years old – and that this buildup could lead to problems in the future. lead poisoning has been reported to cause problems ranging from low IQ and slowed grown in children to memory loss, mood disorders, and miscarriages.

wondering where this leaves you? well, if you are a wet ’n’ wild mega mixers lip balm wearer, you are still getting lead, but the least amount according to the fda study. the top 10 lead leaders are:

the fda-recommended upper limit for lead in candy is 0.1 ppm, but the agency said lipstick, which isn’t intended for ingestion, cannot be compared equally since it is only ingested in small quantities.

“It is not scientifically valid to equate the risk to consumers presented by lead levels in candy, a product intended for ingestion, with that associated with lead levels in lipstick, a product intended for topical use and ingested in much smaller quantities than candy.” – FDA

california has the strictest laws in the nation about lead in consumer products with an imposed safety limit of 5.0 ppm for lipstick.

mommy that hurts!: how to make combing and styling your little one’s natural hair more fun

“My daughter is 4 and very tender-headed (although not sure she is any more difficult than any other 4 year old). Through the years I have taught myself how to braid and twist but now since she is older she won’t sit. I wash her hair once a month and co wash it usually every other week. I use water and conditioner as a detangler and it helps a little. The braids stay in for a couple of weeks. During hair care, I try to make it into a game, watch movies, let her play in hair stuff, come her barbie head, give her lots of breaks. Any tips are very much appreciated? Also, know of any how to sites to learn more easy styles for her?” – Sharla

Hey girl, I feel your pain! And speaking of pain, don’t fret about your daughter being tender-headed. Turns out, a tender head is a common issue and it typically sticks with a person into adulthood. It sounds like you are doing your best to be gentle, which is the best thing you can do (short of giving her a shot of local anesthesia during hair styling sessions)! Also, it sounds like your problem may be more of a restless 4-yr old (very typical), rather than a child in pain from hair combing. All of the things you’ve listed to try and make those sessions easier are really great, so keep doing them! Here are a few more things you can try out, a few I currently do with my own toddler girl and a few I’ve heard about.

First, let’s address making combing your little one’s natural hair easier:

Pre-Poo:

The importance of this step is to minimize tangles from the moment you start on the hair. Using olive oil or a thick conditioner on her dry hair as you take it down will make the strands pliable and hopefully not pull as much on her scalp. Using your fingers, gently detangle the hair by pulling the strands apart. By doing this, you can release shed hairs that would normally get in the way later and make detangling difficult.

Washing/Conditioning:

Try doing this with her hair in 4-8 twisted sections. Never pile up the hair in order to create lather. Use your finger pads to rub against the scalp to cleanse it, and run your fingers down the sections to cleanse them.

Detangling:

Detangle out of the tub, after the bath, and sitting somewhere comfy, so you’re not rushing to comb through her hair. Split the hair into smaller sections so you’re not trying to comb through a lot of hair at once. Make sure you are using a SEAMLESS, RUBBER TIPPED wide tooth comb. The little plastic seams that stick out of regular combs pull on single strands without you realizing it, pulling on the scalp and sharp tips can scratch her scalp. Make sure you are combing from the ends of the section up to the root. Keep a water bottle and the leave in conditioner handy to re-wet sections that may have dried.

Styling:

Try banding or braiding the detangled hair in sections and then allow to air dry. This way, the hair is detangled and doesn’t tangle back up when you try to style the next day. Of course, make sure she sleeps with a satin cap or on a satin pillowcase. If time does not allow this, pick a hairstyle that can do double duty. That means you can do half the style, and ponytail the rest, and it looks cute that way. The next day, you can finish the other half of the style, in order for it to last until the next wash day.

kohl’s rock & republic 2012 fashon week #winning show recap

on friday, i spent my evening, ok well, not the entire evening, but a little time with zoe saldana, heidi klum, ashley simpson and molly sims plus fabulous baby in utero in the blacked out, runway ready hammersham ballroom in manhattan. and what would you know? we all had one thing in common – yes, all of us. we were sitting front and center at the kohl’s rock and republic fashion show getting ready to give our eyes a fashion party.

was the show amazing? okay, nutella waffels are amazing, sunsets in the french rivera are amazing, fresh matte tea in south america is amazing, but i will say that this show did not disappoint and i definitely didn’t leave the ballroom feeling let down. my anticipation was fulfilled; so much so that i was hoping that a few more models would run out when it was over and that a do over was coming up shortly after. after staring at the stage for five minutes after the lights were down, i realized that i’d have to come back next year just to get a taste.

the aesthetics that graced the runway were not surprising, as i wasn’t expecting the brand to go and redo what wasn’t broke in the first place. there were lots of cropped skinny jeans, flowy tops made with thin cotton just in time for the summer and fun pieces like studded hoodies and a few pair of “don’t sneeze too hard in these” booty shorts. once the show stared, one of the fist things i thought was, “man, why didn’t they sell things like this when i was in college?” kohl’s has taken its once upscale label and brought it to the masses accordingly. some major department stores reply on big couture collaborations to bring excitement to their shelves which sell out in a matter of minutes leaving the majority of their customers empty handed, however, kohl’s has hit a sweet spot with rock and republic line by providing a label that creates a stir and will be in endless supply. i think they call this #WINNING on twitter! (and we all know twitter is important)

i have tons of pictures and even walked away with some free swag in the form of fly clothes. once i’m able to wrap my head around all of the night that was the kohl’s rock and republic show, i’ll post even more as well as show you what was in my goodie bag – um how about TWO oufits?!

happy hair thoughts and ‘good hair day’ psychology: why it matters more than you think

i have not had a bad hair day in a while. okay, wow, even typing that out is surprising. now that i think about it, mid last year they were happening every other day it seemed. i just could.not. get my hair to do what i wanted it to do. i’m pretty sure you’ve been there too, let down tremendously after a braid or twist out, tried a style that you thought would look good on you but instead made you look overly frumpy. hey, it happens and what does it matter in the long term anyway? it’s just hair, right? well, not if you ask dr. diller.

a new article on the huffington post looks at the relation between good hair days and how we feel about ourselves. being natural, this may come as no surprise, as we all are well aware that how we feel about our hair can affect more than just our day, it can in many cases, seriously affect our lives and our children’s lives. in her article, “the psychology behind a “good hair day”, dr. vivian diller, Ph.D details how, how we handle our good and bad hair days can affect our overall well-being. she points out that:

“Our sense of attractiveness is strongly connected to confidence and positive self-esteem. Many men and women associate confidence with feeling in control, and hair is one way most of us can be in charge. For example, hair can be altered through cutting, coloring and highlighting, but controlled through straightening, curling and styling. Styled, well-kept hair gives us the external appearance of being well managed and it can contribute to feeling that way internally.”

i find this article interesting not because i don’t agree, but because i know someone like me, with what can and often is considered socially to be “wild, unkempt” hair, throws a wrench into all of this. a good hair day for me can be multifaceted. knowing this, as naturals, we have to define within OURSELVES what, as the dr. points out, exactly is “styled and well-kept” hair. as for myself, it’s my big, over-sized twist out and high buns. i know that many would disagree as nivea recently called my hair type “uncivilized” and glamour magazine once laid their feelings all out on the table about black women’s hair saying, “black [women] should avoid wearing political” hairstyles like dreadlocks or afros, because these hairstyles are seen as unattractive and unprofessional.” dr. diller does include in her piece on hair and esteem a historical tie too, but one that falls outside of my experience as a black women in america.

“Keep in mind that the role hair has played in people’s self-image goes way back to ancient history. As long ago as Greek and Roman times, elaborate wigs were signs of status and wealth. Beautiful hair was associated with royalty, worn like a crown. Cleopatra was famous for her thick, black locks. Samson’s long hair symbolized supernatural strength. During American Colonial times, upper class men and women wore white, curly wigs. Political figures and judges also adorned them as a sign of wisdom and sophistication. With decorative, attractive hair being highly valued throughout history, it’s likely it will continue to impact how we view ourselves today.”

again, this is all historically true, but falls far outside of my scope of applicability of being a black american. there are no mention of say, afros being banned at disney land or that afros were a symbol of perceived “overbearing blackness.” i understand the point of the article but i know first hand how the history behind my type of hair is much different. it’s amazing to think that just by wearing an afro in the 50′s and 60′s solidified a perceived stance of political anger and hate. i think for black women who decide to go natural, we are already very well aware of how our hair is tied deeply into our self-esteem. our hair is the hair worn by many of the men, women and children who were water-hosed down and chased by police dogs. many women with natural hair, to this day, struggle with looking “too black” with their natural afro as they are asked to change their hair to something “more suitable” in the workplace, for example.

i agree with dr. diller that how we feel about our hair makes a world of difference and i would also add that how others feel about your hair impacts the overall psychology behind these feelings too. a good hair day for a natural can often mean much more than just my hair is sitting right, curled right, looking right, in many cases it means i’m proud to be a woman and i’m proud to be black no matter what anyone else thinks about me or my afro.

being natural takes “happy hair thought” psychology to an entirely new level.
