Uncle Funky’s Daughter is a nationally recognized natural hair salon whose awesome products have been featured everywhere including ESSENCE and Ebony Magazine. I remember when I first noticed UFD’s products in college. As a graphic designer, I was very intrigued by the earthy yet urban-funk of the branding labels. The color and textures we’re dead on. Never did I ever imagine I would have the opportunity to actually shoot the products I once adored.

The word FUN, does not begin to describe this shoot. I’m starting to realize: Challenging > Nervous > Excitement > FUN! The challenging part was the lighting (of course) and controlling the white balance since the client desired a white background.  The client also requested reflection on the bottom of each product. Yes, this could have been easily accomplished in photoshop, but I was going for a more authentic look. So what did I use? Good old plexiglass from your local craft store. Overall, I was very pleased with the outcome and I am looking forward to working with Uncle Funky’s Daughter again! KMPD already has some up coming projects schedules with them, so stay tuned!

There comes a time when creative industries will cross… and that time has come. It was all too blissful to shoot Nicola Bailey, a radiant interior designer and owner of Ephesians Three Twenty Designs in Houston. Nicola describes herself as ‘existing outside of every conceivable box known to man’.  Her unique style and flair is what sets her apart from the others. “I’m not a person who is just contemporary, traditional, Victorian etc,” Nicola explains.  “I believe in bringing design styles together in a complimentary way”.

Her inspirations as a designer stem from cultures worldwide. “I love the different cultures; the Islands, Africa, Asia, South America,” Nicola says. “All of the colors, textures and shapes that make each culture unique really inspires me. I am a student of the world”. What I love most about Nicola is that she lives ‘on purpose’. “Live life purposely pursing your passion. Enjoy the simple things in life and no matter what; keep living, loving, sharing and being the person that you are”.

With her unique mindset, I knew that my shoot with her was going to be ‘different’ to say the least. “I want to do my shoot in an art gallery!” she says.  (O_o) <— Was my reply. Cool idea, but this immediately posed as a challenge for me. In an art gallery, colorful abstract art is displayed in the spotlights everywhere. How was I supposed to make the masterpiece appear a masterpiece among masterpieces? (say that 5x fast, it kinda sounds like Reese’s Pieces). In order to have Nicola standout in a balanced manner, we knew the answer would lye in her apparel. Being a designer, Nicola knew just what to do…

“I remember the day we met we went for a walk on the beach and just when we were going to head back Dwayne pulled me back and told me to look at  how beautiful the stars were that night, he held my hand and I took the moment in. He taught me to slow down and enjoy the moment”.

I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Mrs. Floyd and her husband, Benjamin Floyd at dinner over a year ago via mutual friends. They have been a joy to know ever since.

KMPD was fortunate and excited to provide Christy with an unforgettable photo session. We decided to present her photos in ‘Magazine Style’ meaning they are RFP (ready for print). She was a complete natural and her positive energy was easily captured as you can see for yourself…

My goal for this session was to shoot “Magazine Style” meaning that the photos would look as if they could support an article in a magazine or even be used for advertisement purposes.

She did a terrific job and the spring surroundings made a great addition to her overall photo experience.
