The sharing of a simple meal can constitute some of the most memorable times for family and friends…far more significant even than the most extravagant vacation you could ever imagine.

As you read the Bible, have you ever noticed how important hospitality is to God? If you have never taken note of this before, I challenge you today to begin taking note of how important meal time is to the economy of God. The Bible is the revelation of God and His relationship to His people and therefore, we should give careful attention to the things to which God gives space in the book in which He reveals Himself.

This week we are studying from Romans 12:13
If the argument of this first chapter were reduced to a formula or recipe, it might look something like . . . worldly wisdom/’that seems right to me thinking’ leads to individualism and divisive behavior among Christians which empties the gospel of its power. The glory of God and his loving plan to rescue and redeem people is literally negated. The shame of the Corinthian church and ours as well is trying to maintain the pretence of gospel power and God’s glory while still holding tightly
to the values of our world that divide, separate and render us powerless. The stabbing sensation that we as a reader should feel and respond to is not how bad the wisdom of the world is but rather that our behaviors have the potential of throwing a dark shadow over the brilliance of the gospel message.

The point of the passage is that both gospel power and joyful togetherness is about embracing the ways of God that are revealed in the message of the cross (1:18-25), our confidence in Christ (26-31) and the proclamation of the cross (2:1-5).
There is a proverb that appears twice in the collection of biblical proverbs that reads:

There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.

It may be repeated in the scriptures for emphasis. It may be repeated because God knows that not only do we not get it, but there is something about us that we don’t want to get it. In other words, what seems straight, appears level, makes sense to us or looks like an easier way to get something done in life is often not only foolish, ineffective and painful but it actually leads to increased distance and separation from our creator God.
Rarely do we think of our ‘togetherness’ as the church of God in terms of what is not accomplishing. We are reminded today in this text of scripture that our attitudes and mind-set toward each other can result in our believing in the power of the cross of Christ to deliver from sin and create new life, but in practice nullifying its power. Our attitudes and mind-set toward others actually begin with our view of ourselves. Strident individualism, spiritual arrogance and accommodation to the culture of our world result in sinful mind-sets that strip a church of its power. That is why the Apostle reminds us in the first 9 verses of this chapter that our identity should be wrapped up in our being called by God to salvation, holiness and community in Jesus Christ our Lord.
The assembly of believers at Corinth, like KSBC, faced the pressures of time and culture. The letter we are reading this morning to the Corinthian church is written about 6 or 7 years after the church began with the outreach ministry of Paul and his friends. Essentially it is a letter of redirection and reformation. Time and pressure had broken down their core commitment to Christ and each other. They needed redirection. They needed reforming.

A careful reading of this letter will reveal 3 factors that should motivate us this morning to similar redirection and reforming. Our thinking and behavior regarding the gospel and our church community is similar at times to what caused Paul to write this letter of loving correction. They are strident individualism, spiritual arrogance, and cultural accommodation.
1 John 3:2-3:
v2 Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. v3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
Our hope isn't perfected and make known to us in this life.
As you may have noticed in listening to the ‘saved by God’ stories of those being baptized this morning, one of the greatest transformations that happens as a result of saving faith is not the change of eternal destiny, but the change of life orientation. The gospel is humiliating. Identifying yourself with Jesus Christ tells everyone that you have turned from self trust in all of its forms to the fullness of Christ in his death, burial and resurrection. The appropriately baptized person has publicly testified to the futility and frustration of living life with them at the controls. Baptism is a huge public statement of committed transformation to follow Christ because of Christ.
400 years ago Puritan pastor Richard Sibbes wrote the following description of the human dilemma:
It were an easy thing to be a Christian, if religion stood only in a few outward works and duties, But to take the soul to task, and to deal roundly with our own hearts, and to let conscience have its full work, and to bring the soul into spiritual subjection unto God, This is not so easy a matter, because the soul out of self-love is loath to enter into itself, lest it should have other thoughts of itself than it would have.

In her 2010 book, ‘Liespotting,’ Pamela Meyer made this observation;
Lying is an attempt to bridge a gap, to connect our wishes and our fantasies, about who we wish we were, how we could be, with what we’re really like.

The point made from different perspectives is similar. We do not do well with the truth about ourselves. But even more than that, the life of faith specifically draws undesired attention to one specific truth about ourselves, we resist submitting our lives to God’s care and control. The person of faith who is living in step with God can readily acknowledge, ‘I don’t do this well’. There is an ongoing humility of soul that accompanies the walk of faith that reeks of truthfulness and authenticity.
When the Apostle John warned and ordered us as followers of Christ to not love the world (1John 2:15), he identified a fascinating principle and an ever present danger for people of faith. The principle, faith must always be lived out in a context . . . a marriage, family, community, country and world. The danger, faith can easily become embedded in the context rather than in the person and promises of God. As we read this lurid, gruesome and sad story of Abraham’s nephew lot, we are faced with the stark contrast between a person of faith who is engaged with the culture and a person of faith who is embedded in the culture.
<itunes:summary>When the Apostle John warned and ordered us as followers of Christ to not love the world (1John 2:15), he identified a fascinating principle and an ever present danger for people of faith.
As we continue to observe and learn from Abraham and Sarah’s faith journey, we are exposed to a day in their life that is full of questions. The Lord and two angels visit them. Both Abraham and Sarah are presented as gracious and humble hosts for these unusual guests. The Lord reveals to both some of his thinking, promises and plans. Both Sarah and Abraham are drawn to greater faith and enjoyment of God as a result of the questioning exchange. As we read and become familiar with this fascinating few hours of Abraham and Sarah’s life, it is certainly safe to say that their first piece of advice for you and me in our faith journey would be ‘don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Faith: How much commitment is necessary ?

Imagine describing someone’s faith without being able to talk about their commitment. Consider telling someone about Noah’s faith without his building a boat. Are you impressed with Abraham’s faith without the Isaac offering? How about Joseph’s faith if he had gone ahead and paid his brothers back in kind for what they did to him? Or Gideon’s faith, if he doesn’t follow God’s orders? Try telling the story of Jesus’ faith without the sacrificial and obedient commitment of the cross. While we can be certain that these were capable and intelligent people who knew a lot about God, the defining characteristic of their lives was commitment.
Scene 1: “The Mess”
1. Sarai proposes a reasonable solution to the problem of her barrenness
2. Abram passively agrees with the plan
3. Hagar gets pregnant and looks down at Sarai because of it
4. Sarai gets angry and complains against Abram
5. Abram responds passively once again
6. Sarai mistreats Hagar to the point that she must flee

Scene 2: “The Intervention”
1. The angel of the Lord commands Hagar to return
2. Hagar receives a promise of great offspring
3. The character of Hagar’s offspring is foreshadowed
4. Hagar responds with thanksgiving to God

This is a situation in which a tension arises between trust in God and foolish reliance upon human wisdom. In other words, it’s a battle between faith and flesh. Abram may have believed the substance of God’s promise, but he didn’t trust God’s methods.
Too often those of us who have hung around church very long find three distinct sources for comfort and encouragement when our faith equilibrium is a bit challenged. Each of the three are equally destructive and damnable.
1. We remember our faith in our faith.
We recall the prayer prayed or the act of believing that we did long ago.
2. We rely on our faithfulness.
Our confidence is boosted and the hard questions fade into the background as we rehearse the number of years served and things done for the Lord.
3. We rest on our ‘pat’ answers.

We are encouraged as we review the stock answers that either we have or we know we can get them from the nearest pastor or website. These answers never change!
Abram’s faith experience recorded in Genesis 15 provides three secure sources for the person of genuine faith to run toward with every question, doubt, insecurity and fear. In simple terms the sources are: What God said, what God did and what God will do. Abram’s faith is proven genuine and held up for all as a model because his doubts were satisfied by God in these ways.
An essential characteristic of living in the world of the unseen and hoped for is the ability to rebound . . . to recover from the inevitable setbacks and frustrations that come due to our weakness, sin and love for the here and now. Faith rebounds. Abram stands before us as modeling one of the most crucial components of the walk of faith, how to walk by faith after you didn’t walk by faith. Abram leads the list of faith rebounders in the storyline of the scriptures. Think of the rebounding capabilities of Samson, Rahab, David and Peter! What incredible recoveries! Faith is measured not only in terms of what it takes to stop it but also in terms of rebounding.
Think of the impact on your obedient faith and commitment to love others that is felt when you intersect with an angry spouse, a rebellious child, a difficult neighbor, an uncaring family member or an obnoxious co-worker. You may not be beaten, bloodied or bound, but your independent preoccupation with your life and your self infatuation lead you to incredible frustration as you fight and defend yourself from these various assaults on your perceived freedom. It is significant that in most cases when faced with angry or unkind opposition, the best we can do is not react and distance ourselves from the threat. The gospel of God releases us and transforms us to not waste our lives as victims of those who oppose
Jesus replied to a questioner that everything he teaches can be summed up in love God with your whole being and love people as yourself. He further states that the world will know that you are his follower by the distinctive characteristic of your love for other Christ followers. John makes the seemingly absurd claim that the person who does not love people does not even know God because God cannot be disconnected from love in any way. These are simply representative of the message of the Bible that love is a major marker when assessing anyone’s claim to knowing God or growing in obedience to God.
Measuring personal growth and development in your faith can be encouraging if (1) it is actually happening and (2) you are using the right metrics that point to the supernatural power of the gospel. There is a vast difference between enjoying God at work in your life and you at work to promote and protect your way. The gospel, understood through the Bible, focused on the magnificence of Christ and delivered in power by the Holy Spirit changes a person’s life. That person is said to be reborn, given a new heart, lives a new life and thinks a new way. Our attention is drawn in this series of sermons to answering the question, are you growing and developing in your faith?
KSBC exists to glorify God by leading people in a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Stated another way, the wonders and ways of God are seen, reflected in our lives as we both grow and change to live like Christ and as we point others to know and love him. As we begin a new year, let’s take advantage of our increased awareness of time, assessment and reflection by taking a prayerful look at our individual growth and development in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Before we make any resolutions, let’s ask God by his Spirit and word to show us the ‘state of our souls.’ Have you grown in your relationship with Jesus Christ in the past year? Are you on track to continue to grow in your faith, love and hope in the coming year?

This week we are studying from Romans 12:1-2
Before we make any resolutions, let’s ask God by his Spirit and word to show us the ‘state of our souls.’ Have you grown in your relationship with Jesus Christ in the past year? Are you on track to continue to grow in your faith, love and hope in the coming year? This week we are studying from Romans 12:1-2 Pastor Whipple's sermon notes and presentation are available for download.
If you’ve studied Isaiah at any length, then you may be familiar with the term “servant songs.” These are the famous chapters which speak in anticipation of God’s chosen Servant, the coming Messiah. The first of these we saw last week, chapter 42. The second and third are found in chapters 49 and 50 respectively.
And the final (and most well-known) of these is found in chapter 53

This week we are studying from Isaiah 55
Are you prepared to tell your ‘God saves sinners’ story? The opportunity to do so will certainly present itself in various ways over the celebration of the holidays.
