Video iPods - Get a Virus free

Apple has jus discovered that a "small" number of video iPods sold after September 12, 2006, had a preloaded windows virus (RavMonE.exe) in them. This virus is said to infect only Windows based computers.

However, most of the up to date virus scanners will detect and clean this virus.

Note : The iPod nano, iPod shuffle and Mac OS X are not affected and all video iPods are now shipping virus free.

IE7 Can Disclose Your Sensitive Information

Some security researchers have already a week ago discovered an information disclosure vulnerability in IE7 hours after its official release.

The flaw is caused by an error in the handling of redirections for URLs with the "mhtml:" URI handler. Actually, this flaw was observed by Secunia in earlier version of IE6 and Outlook Express but still remains unresolved. It is said that this flaw can be exploited by malicious people to disclose potentially sensitive information.

Teens Rule - Google-Wikipedia-MySpace

A recent study conducted by Dr. Sam Vaknin of Google keywords over the past several years reveals that content created by teenagers and young adults on Wikipedia or social networks are often touted by the search engine as the most authoritative pages on a given subject.

The article also states that "This is Google's policy now: Wikipedia articles regardless of their
length or quality or even mere existence are placed by Google's
algorithm high up in the search results."

So son't you think there is some intimate relationship between Google and Wikipedia. However. it is said that googles latest algorithm codenamed Big Daddy, still calculates page ranks according to the number of incoming links.

The study also reveals that "the more incoming links from MySpace a Website has - the higher it is placed in the search results" . So webmasters now know what they have to look for.

Microsoft ends support for Windows XP SP1

The Windows Service Pack released in September 2002, is comingf to an end. Microsoft ended the support for Windows XP Service Pack 1 and SP1a on 10 October, 2006 leaving people no option but to upgrade to Service Pack 2, if they wish to continue to receive crucial components, including security software.

The move to drop support for SP1 is in line with Microsoft's stated strategy for support. According to its guidelines, Microsoft guarantees to provide "mainstream support" for a full product for five years, but will only guarantee to support a service pack for 12 months after the launch of the next version of that pack.

Windows Service Pack 2 was released in September 2004.

There's little reason for anyone to still be running SP1; SP2 contained a range of improvements to XP's security. People can check which version they are running by right-clicking on the My Computer desktop icon and then selecting properties.

The ending of support for SP1 will help Microsoft to clear the decks for the arrival of Vista, which is expected to be released to business customers next month and to consumers in January.

Server Core : Stripped down version of Windows

Longhorn Server is now-a-days most talked about. The reason behind this is not about the innovative features installed in to it but because of the stripped down version of the server.

It's called Server Core, and it will take only one-sixth of the disk space of a normal Longhorn installation. It is said to be a version of Windows that does not, in fact, use Windows. It is based on the past experience that fewer "moving parts" in an operating system equates to fewer vulnerabilities, stability and security issues. Reducing the amount of code can help reduce the amount of bugs. And that what Server Core is all about.

Server Core can only act as a file server, domain controller, DNS server or DHCP server. Besides these four core roles, Server Core also supports Cluster Server, Network Load Balancing, the Unix subsystem, the new Windows Backup in Longhorn, Multipath I/O, Removable Storage Management, BitLocker drive encryption and SNMP. Server Core also supports Remote Desktop administration, although you'll only get a command-line window when you connect.

Aprt from this, what the administrator would be missing would be an IE, OutLook Express, Calculator or other basic tools and application(of less importance). However, there would also be no Microsoft Framework, which means no managed code on Server Core.

Server Core would include better Remote, non-GUI management tools, requiring smaller disk and memory requirements. It is said that it would be more secure and stable.

Google Launches new Code Search for SW Developers

Google is taking its search expertise to one of its favorite audiences: Software Developers.

The company has launched a Web site, Google Code Search, which according to the company will help programmers search billions of lines of code. This would help them by providing tips and how to write their own software.

The service, conceived by the Google Labs early technology group, will crawl publicly available code, most of which is made available through open-source projects. It is said that, the search and indexing covers code on Web pages and code that resides in compressed files.

The company expects that the search engine will be used primarily as a learning tool to help students and serious programmers, rather than a way to find and copy another person's code.

For example, a developer or a student may need to write a function as part of an application and search the Web to see other examples.

The search engine will let people do both keyword search and "regular expressions," which allow people to search a specified pattern.

Hot Reboot - Restarting Windows without restarting the Computer

Many a times while installing some softwares or updating something, you are frequently asked to restart your system. In such cases, you can avoid restarting the Computer altogether from the BIOS and save your time.

When you click on the SHUTDOWN button, make sure to simultaneous press "SHIFT" Button. If you hold the Shift key down while clicking on SHUTDOWN button, you computer would restart without restarting the Computer. This is equivalent to term "HOT REBOOT".

Faster Access - Increase your bandwidth by 20%

Have you ever wondered, even if you or your applications are using most of the bandwidth, how does Microsoft Updates and other Microsoft services does not get affected. Well Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and for sending and receiving error reports from your PC etc.

However, using the below given tweak you can get that 20% back and utilize 100% of your bandwidth.

Click on your Start button, then go to Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes.

This opens the group policy editor.

Then go to: Local Computer Policy
then Computer Configuration
then Administrative Templates
then Network
then QOS Packet Scheduler and
then to Limit Reservable Bandwidth.

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%. It works on Win 2000 as well ( although i have not tried it on windows 2000).

Now you are ready to enjoy 100% of your bandwidth and faster access to Internet.

Deleting System Software in Windows XP

Windows XP hides many system softwares from the user. Take for example Windows Messenger, you don't see this under Add/Remove Programs or Components, even if it is installed in your system. Reason, nothing special - they want it to be installed.

However, you can edit a file called sysoc.inf and modify it to make the program appear in the Add/Remove Programs list. The file is located under your System Folder (Normally Windows)\inf\sysoc.inf. Then all yo have to do is remove the string "Hide", corresponding to the software you would like to have removed.

For example, if you want MS WordPad to be shown in the Add/Remove Window, then locate the below line in the file

MSWordPad=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wordpad.inf,HIDE,7

and modify it to

MSWordPad=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wordpad.inf,7

Done!!

Now go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Add Remove Windows Components -> Accessories and Utilities -> Accessories, and you will find that you now have an option to remove MS WordPad.

Quick remedies for a slow Internet connection

Bored about the time taken by your browsers to open any page. Or, do you still need to speed up your Internet connection.

Often the issue is with your ISP's (Internet Service Provider) DNS. It forms a bottleneck between your Computer and the Internet. A DNS server (Domain Name Service) is used to translate an address like www.google.com into a numerical IP address, so that your computer can route you to that address. A DNS is required so that human beings need not remember the IP addresses instead of the Domain name. Moreover, at times the IP address of some servers keep on changing, which is tracked by the DNS.

Usually, DNS takes about a few milliseconds to translate the domain name to IP address format. However, at times these milliseconds really buildup. Also the DNS server of your ISP is often not reliable. By using OpenDNS you can solve the problem of relibility and speed to some extent.

OpenDNS runs a distributed network of DNS servers so using it is more reliable. It filters out bad addresses so phishers and spammers can't direct you to their site. OpenDNS also detects typos in the URLs you enter.

To configure your browser to use Open DNS

1. Go to Contol Panel > Network Connections.

2. Now select your connection and right click, go to properties.

3. Select Networking Tab > Internet Protocol TCP/IP > Properties

4. Use these following DNS server addresses and save:

* 208.67.222.222
* 208.67.220.220

That's it, you have now updated your DNS server to OpenDNS.

Create a Boot Disk from System Files

There are many times when you would have messed up with your system and you are unable to Boot Windows XP. Particularly, while installing a dual boot system with Windows and Linux. In such situations, normally your boot configuration might have got corrupted (Although there might be many other reasons). This can occur when the active partition boot record or some of the required files become corrupted.

Well, here is a way to overcome this problem and make a Boot Disk from your system files. This boot disk does not contain all the files. However, you can create a boot disk specifically for Windows XP that may allow you to boot the operating system.

Using Windows XP, place a blank floppy in drive A and format the disk. Navigate to the root folder of the system (in most cases this will be C:\) and copy the following files to the floppy disk.

Boot.ini
NTLDR
Ntdetect.com

If you can't see the files, click [Tools] and [Folder Options...] in the Menu Bar of Windows Explorer. Click the [View] tab and click the radio button next to [Show Hidden Files and Folders]. Remove the check mark next to [Hide Protected Operating System Files (Recommended)] then click [Apply] and [OK]. The files should now be visible in Windows Explorer. If the files still cannot be copied, right click each file, cli [Properties] and remove the checkmark from the Read-Only attributes. Reset whatever attributes were unchecked after the copy procedure is completed.

In addition to the files listed above, check the same directory for bootsect.dos and ntbootdd.sys files. If they are present on your system, copy them to the same floppy diskette.

The disk is used as any other boot disk, inserting it into the floppy drive (A:\) and initiating a cold boot. Make sure the BIOS is set so that the A:\ drive is first in the boot sequence.

Is there any default cache management system with Entity beans ?
In other words whether a cache of the data in database will be maintained in EJB ?
Caching data from a database inside the Application Server are what Entity EJB’s are used for.The ejbLoad() and ejbStore() methods are used to synchronize the Entity Bean state with the persistent storage(database). Transactions also play an important role in this scenario. If data is removed from the database, via an external application - your Entity Bean can still be “alive” the EJB container. When the transaction commits, ejbStore() is called and the row will not be found, and the transaction rolled back.

Why is ejbFindByPrimaryKey mandatory?
An Entity Bean represents persistent data that is stored outside of the EJB Container/Server. The ejbFindByPrimaryKey is a method used to locate and load an Entity Bean into the container, similar to a SELECT statement in SQL. By making this method mandatory, the client programmer can be assured that if they have the primary key of the Entity Bean, then they can retrieve the bean without having to create a new bean each time - which would mean creating duplications of persistent data and break the integrity of EJB.

Many a times it happens that your drivers get corrupted, and at times due to some virus activity. Say you installed a wrong driver version and later you are unable to recover the last stable version of the driver. Then in such a situation it is always better to make back ups or create a restore point. However, Windows XP Command Prompt comes with a command called driverquery. This command displays a list of all installed device drivers and their properties. System administrators can alternatively use the command with redirection operator, to save the information to a text file and maintain a record of that.

For example: enter this at the command prompt : driverquery > log.txt

The text will look something like this
