Although the intent of the project was to reduce sedentary time of elementary school students, researchers also wanted to assess the effect physical activity had on student learning and academic achievement. Greene discusses the results of this project and the framework for a current, similar NIH-funded grant, A+PAAC, while actively involving the audience in some of the curriculum activities he designed and helped teachers implement into their daily classroom routines.

Cast: KU-CRL

Tags: CRL Learns, physical activity and Leon Greene

<media:player url="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=32209633" />

Physical Activity Across the Curriculum (PAAC) - Leon Greene

From Knowledgeable to Knowledge-Able: New Learning Environments for New Media Environments (Michael Wesch)

Dubbed “the explainer” by Wired magazine, Michael Wesch is a cultural anthropologist exploring the effect of new media on society and culture. Randy’s Safe and Civil Schools Series is a comprehensive set of practical materials designed to help schools improve the safety and civility of all their school settings. The positive behavior support procedures embodied in these activities and teacher-support materials involve three broad types of interventions: (a) proactive, (b) positive, and (c) instructional interventions. These three types of interventions provide a framework for school personnel to identify variables they can manipulate to encourage responsible student behavior.

Cast: KU-CRL

Tags: behavior, education, classroom management and Randy Sprick

<media:player url="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=31166662" />

Positive Behavior Support: Promoting Safety and Civility in Schools

Matt Marino - Enhancing STEM Education with Video Games

In this presentation, Matt Marino of Washington State University describes how the award-winning video game “You Make Me Sick!” enhances science instruction and assessment for all students, including those with learning disabilities and other at-risk populations.

Learn more about “You Make Me Sick!” at filamentgames.com/projects/gils

Cast: KU-CRL

Tags: crl learns

<media:player url="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=30747244" />

Matt Marino - Enhancing STEM Education with Video Games

Hank Levin: The Why and How of Cost-Effectiveness Analysis

MAY 4, 2009
12:00 p.m.
Presented by:Hank Levin, William H. Kilpatrick Professor of Economics and Education, Columbia University

In educational evaluations and educational policy discussions, comparisons of different interventions with the same goal are usually limited to comparisons of their effectiveness. But, for the same level of improved educational effectiveness, an intervention might be associated with large differences in costs. Costs are rarely measured or considered in such evaluations. Even when they are, effectiveness results such as increased student achievement are assessed with the equivalent of micrometers or calipers, but costs are assessed with the equivalent of a witching rod. This presentation will describe cost-effectiveness analysis and why it is important in educational policy. It will demonstrate the method of cost measurement and show how it can be combined with effectiveness to obtain cost-effectiveness comparisons of educational alternatives.

Hank Levin is the William H. Kilpatrick Professor of Economics and Education at Columbia University in New York City. Dr. Conley, drawing on work that spans elementary to adult learners, will illustrate that, with regard to cognitive strategy development and instruction, context matters a great deal. Contrary to current educational policies that seem to emphasize one instructional approach for all, Dr. Conley will make a case for a more complex approach that acknowledges the changing demands learners encounter as they move from school to workplace and become thriving members of their communities.
————–
Mark W. Conley is a Professor at the University of Memphis, having spent 21 years at Michigan State University. He specializes in literacy, teacher education and applied research in urban school contexts. He investigates connections between literacy and subject matter in teacher preparation. More recently, he has been collaborating with the Memphis City School District to develop a program using college age tutors to provide cognitive strategy instruction for young children.

Cast: KU-CRL

Tags: Mark Conley, Cognitive Strategy Development and instruction

<media:player url="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=28472889" />

The Jagged Line in Our Understanding of Cognitive Strategy Development and Instruction

Reliability and Classical Test Theory

MARCH 27, 2009
3:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Presented by:Bruce Frey, University of Kansas

This installment of CRL Learns Capacity Building will provide a basic introduction to the concept of reliability in measurement. He presented, "Pictures at an Exhibition: The Role of Visual Display in an Evidence-based Science," on November 11 at the KU School of Education.

Here is the abstract of his presentation:
The role of empirical evidence in understanding the world has a long and distinguished history departing from its Aristotelian origins 2300 years ago to Francis Bacon (c. 1214-1294), to John Locke (1632-1704) and David Hume (1711-1776). Remarkably, effective methods for actually looking at evidence are much more recent (Playfair, 1786; Tukey, 1977).
More remarkably, these marvelous methods are still massively underutilized. For example, in 2008 about 60% of all data displays in Psychological Bulletin were tables, despite the long understood fact that "getting information from a table is like extracting sunbeams from cucumbers" (Farquahr & Farquahr, 1891). In this talk I provide a case-study of an important data set illustrating what can be gained through careful display of evidence, and what is likely lost if they are not.

Cast: KU-CRL

Tags: KU-CRL, CRL, University of Kansas, Don Deshler, Adolescent Literacy, Learning Disabilities, Neal Kingston, Howard Wainer, Evidence-based Science, empirical evidence, role of display, KU School of Education and Medical Examiners

<media:player url="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=17419780" />

Howard Wainer, "Pictures at an Exhibition: The Role of Visual Display in an Evidence-based Science"
