Palakkad: (KVARTHA) A team of researchers from NSS Engineering College in Palakkad has been granted a patent for a groundbreaking method to assess muscle composition. This innovative approach aims to help athletes choose the sports that best suit their unique muscle structures.

Led by Professor G. Venugopal from the Instrumentation and Control Engineering department, the research also involved Professor S. Ramakrishnan from IIT Madras and scholars Remya R. Nair and Divya Sasidharan.

Traditionally, determining muscle composition has relied on invasive methods like muscle biopsies, which involve extracting tissue samples. These procedures are expensive, time-consuming, and impractical for widespread use. The new method, however, offers a significant advancement by analyzing electrical signals received from the skin surface to identify variations in muscle composition. This non-invasive approach is both cost-effective and more accessible.

This innovation holds immense potential across various fields. In sports science, it will empower coaches to evaluate athletes' muscle fiber types early in their careers, enabling them to tailor training programs for optimal performance. Furthermore, the method will be valuable in muscle-related research and treatments, including the detection of muscle fiber variations associated with neuromuscular disorders.

Professor Venugopal emphasized the transformative impact of this technology, stating, "This will assist sports coaches in evaluating muscle fiber typology at the start of an athlete's career, helping them identify strengths and optimize training methods accordingly."

This groundbreaking research is poised to revolutionize sports science, physiotherapy, and athletic training, paving the way for a more personalized and effective approach to athlete development.

Delhi: Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has stirred up a storm with his recent allegations in the Delhi Assembly, claiming that Gujarat has become the epicentre of India's drug trade. Kejriwal's speech, which has gone viral on social media, directly targets Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

In his speech, Kejriwal presented a damning indictment of the Gujarat government, alleging that a significant portion of the drugs seized in India originated from the state. He cited several instances of large drug seizures in Gujarat and Delhi, linking them to a network operating out of the state. Kejriwal also pointed out that a significant percentage of the drugs seized during the Lok Sabha elections originated from Gujarat.

'Drugs are being sold at every nook and corner. Delhi has been turned into a hub for drug trafficking. While Delhi doesn't manufacture these drugs, a substantial amount of drugs seized here originated from Gujarat,' Kejriwal said.

He further alleged that there are factories operating in Gujarat that manufacture and process drugs, and that the state's ports, especially Mundra Port, are being used to smuggle drugs into the country. Kejriwal also raised questions about the role of Adani Group, which controls Mundra Port, in this alleged drug smuggling network.

Kejriwal directly challenged Amit Shah, saying, 'The responsibility of controlling drug trafficking in the country lies with the Home Minister. If Gujarat, under his watch, has become the drug capital of India, then people will question his role.'

The AAP leader's allegations have sparked a political firestorm. While Kejriwal has accused the BJP-led Gujarat government of turning a blind eye to the drug trade, the opposition has countered by accusing the AAP government of shielding drug traffickers.

Claims on Mosques and Dargahs Threaten India's Secular Fabric: Grand Mufti

Kozhikode: Indian Grand Mufti, Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar, has expressed deep concern over the recent spate of claims made on mosques and dargahs across the country. In a press release, he warned that such claims could potentially damage the secular fabric of India and disrupt communal harmony.

The Mufti pointed to the recent controversy surrounding the Ajmer Dargah, where a claim was made about the existence of a temple beneath the dargah. This claim, he said, is baseless and has led to a court case that could have serious consequences for the religious harmony of the country.

'The Ajmer Dargah is a symbol of India's religious harmony and Sufi heritage,' the Mufti said. 'The claim that there is a temple beneath the dargah is completely unfounded and is a deliberate attempt to create communal tensions.'

He further added that similar claims made on other places of worship, such as the Gyanvapi Mosque, Mathura Shahi Eidgah, and Sambhal Shahi Juma Masjid, are a threat to the secular nature of India. The Mufti emphasized that the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, which mandates the status quo of all places of worship as it existed on August 15, 1947, should be strictly enforced.

'These incidents are a deliberate attempt to create divisions within our society,' the Mufti said. 'It is high time that all democratic-minded people, political parties, and the government come together to protect the secular fabric of our nation and prevent such incidents from recurring.'

The Mufti urged the judiciary and law enforcement agencies to take strict action against those who make such claims and to ensure that the sanctity of places of worship is maintained.

Kerala Aims to Become Rabies-Free by 2030: Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to launch a comprehensive rabies prevention and awareness campaign with the aim of eradicating the disease from the state by 2030. Minister for Animal Husbandry J. Chinchu Rani flagged off a special awareness vehicle at the Secretariat to mark the beginning of this campaign.

The minister stated that the state government has partnered with Mission Rabies to intensify rabies prevention efforts, especially following the successful implementation of the mass dog vaccination program in 2022. She emphasized that a combination of vaccination, the ABC (Animal Birth Control) program, and comprehensive awareness campaigns is crucial to eliminating rabies from Kerala.

The awareness vehicle, equipped with video displays, posters, and interactive sessions, will travel across the state for the next month, conducting awareness programs in schools, colleges, hospitals, and public spaces. The campaign will focus on:

Road Construction Disrupts Businesses in Kasargod

Kasargod: The ongoing construction of a flyover as part of the national highway project has caused significant disruptions to businesses and pedestrians in the city. The digging of a three-meter-deep trench near the new bus stand for the construction of a service road has created a major inconvenience.

Several commercial establishments, including the Cherur Complex (Old Taj Restaurant), AIWA Silks, IDBI Bank and offices, along with Smart Bazaar and Fathima Arcade, have been severely impacted by the road excavation. These buildings are now practically inaccessible due to the deep trench.

While the situation might improve once the service road is completed and the basement floor becomes the ground floor of Fathima Arcade and Smart Bazaar is opened, businesses in the Cherur Complex face a more challenging situation. They may have to resort to using ladders to access their buildings from the national highway. Additionally, the front portion of the Cherur Complex might need to be demolished to create a suitable access point.

Other establishments like the Kasargod Press Club, Kasargod Cooperative Bank, and residential flats, while facing a slightly elevated road, will still be able to access the national highway. However, there are concerns about the increased elevation and potential flooding issues, especially near the Anzar Masjid, where a new drain will be constructed as part of the service road.

The three-meter-deep excavation has also raised concerns about waterlogging in the area, particularly around the new bus stand. The extent of this issue will only become clear once the road construction is completed.

Work on the service road began a week ago but has been temporarily halted due to heavy rain. However, officials from Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS) have assured that the work will be completed within 10 days.

The ongoing national highway construction project has raised questions about whether it will improve Kasargod's cityscape or cause undue hardship to its residents and businesses.

Former MLA's PA Loses Rs 7 Lakh in Mobile Phone Hack

Pathanamthitta: In a distressing incident, A.T. Satheesh, the former personal assistant to MLA Raju Abraham, lost a staggering Rs 7 lakh after his mobile phone was hacked. The incident took place in Ranni, Kerala.

Satheesh's Union Bank of India account was targeted by cybercriminals who managed to siphon off the money in multiple transactions. Despite being alerted to suspicious activity, Satheesh initially dismissed the messages as they arrived while he was driving.

Investigations revealed that the hackers had gained access to Satheesh's WhatsApp account a week prior to the financial heist. They created a fraudulent WhatsApp group impersonating the bank and added Satheesh as a member. Believing it to be a genuine communication channel, Satheesh shared his bank details, inadvertently falling into the cybercriminals' trap.

The hackers then systematically transferred the funds from Satheesh's account. Despite the daily limit for online transactions being Rs 5 lakh, the perpetrators managed to transfer a significantly larger amount. This has raised concerns about potential vulnerabilities in the banking system.

Satheesh has filed a complaint with the bank, Ranni police, and the cyber cell. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the increasing sophistication of cyber threats and the need for heightened vigilance, especially when dealing with online financial transactions.

Fatal Car Crash Claims Five Young Lives in Kerala

Alappuzha: A tragic road accident claimed the lives of five young MBBS students near Alappuzha, Kerala. The overcrowded car, carrying 11 passengers, skidded and collided with a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus on Monday night.

According to the Regional Transport Officer (RTO), the primary cause of the accident was the overcrowding of the vehicle. The car, designed to accommodate only seven passengers, was carrying four additional passengers, which likely affected the vehicle's handling and braking capabilities.

Other factors contributing to the accident include the driver's inexperience (he was 18 years old and had only been driving for five months), poor road conditions due to wet weather, and the vehicle's age and lack of proper maintenance. The absence of an anti-lock braking system (ABS) further exacerbated the situation.

The deceased students were first-year MBBS students at TD Medical College in Vandanam. They were returning to their hostel after watching a movie. Six other students were injured in the accident and are currently hospitalized.

Ernakulam General Hospital Set to Become the First District Hospital in India to Perform Heart Transplants

Thiruvananthapuram: Ernakulam General Hospital is all set to become the first district hospital in India to perform heart transplant surgeries. The Health Department has granted a license to the hospital for conducting heart transplants.

Health Minister Veena George handed over the license to Dr. Noble Gracious, Executive Director of K-SOTTO, and Dr. Shahir Shay, Superintendent of Ernakulam General Hospital, in a ceremony.

The minister stated that the hospital would initiate the necessary procedures to commence heart transplant surgeries as soon as possible. She highlighted the significance of this achievement, emphasizing that it was a proud moment for the state and the country. Ernakulam General Hospital had previously made history by being the first district hospital in India to perform kidney transplants. Additionally, the hospital has performed the first-ever valve replacement surgery without open-heart surgery in the country.

The hospital boasts several specializations, including cardiology, and is equipped with two cath labs, NABH accreditation, and 7 super specialty departments. The addition of heart transplants will further solidify its position as a premier healthcare institution.

Currently, the only government hospital in the state performing heart transplants is the Kottayam Medical College, where 10 such surgeries have been conducted. With the Ernakulam General Hospital joining this endeavor, more patients will have access to this life-saving procedure.

The hospital has established a heart failure clinic to identify patients who are suitable candidates for heart transplants. This clinic operates every Wednesday to evaluate patients and list them for potential transplants. The Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO) will facilitate the procurement of donor hearts.

The decision to grant a license for heart transplants at Ernakulam General Hospital was based on several factors, including the availability of a cardiology unit, a cardiology ICU, ventilators, a well-equipped transplant facility, a state-of-the-art operation theater, surgical instruments, and a team of expert doctors.

Heart transplants are complex procedures that require specialized expertise and infrastructure. The successful establishment of this program at Ernakulam General Hospital marks a significant milestone in the field of healthcare in India.

Andhra Pradesh Waqf Board Dissolved by Chandrababu Naidu Government

Amaravati: The Chandrababu Naidu-led NDA government in Andhra Pradesh has dissolved the state Waqf Board. This decision comes after the government overturned a previous order by the YSR Congress government that had appointed members to the board in October 2023.

Following a High Court order, the then YSR Congress government had constituted an 11-member Waqf Board, with three members elected and the remaining nominated. However, a petition challenging the formation process led to the Andhra Pradesh High Court staying the election of the Waqf Board chairperson in November 2023.

The board remained inactive for a long time due to the uncertainty surrounding the chairperson's election. The dissolution of the board comes amidst protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill of 2024. Notably, the state minority welfare minister, N. Mohammad Farooq, issued a statement stating that the previous government's order had been revoked.

In September, the NDA government appointed TDP leader Sheikh Abdul Azeez as the chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Waqf Board. The dissolution of the previous board paves the way for the formation of a new board under Abdul Azeez's leadership. Abdul Azeez, a former mayor of Nellore, is currently the TDP president of the Nellore parliamentary constituency.

Kerala announces further restrictions as TPR rises again

Thiruvananthapuram: (news.kvartha.com 23.07.2021) Kerala Chief Minister, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan today announced the further tightening of restrictions in the State with an increase in the Test Positivity Rate (TPR) in the last few days. The average test positivity rate for the last three days is 12.1%. TPR is above 10% in 11 districts and Malappuram district has the highest TPR of 17%.

Briefing the media, the Chief Minister said, “In the context of the Covid spread, Central and State Government Offices, Public Offices, Public Sector Undertakings, Companies, Commissions, and Corporation offices in Category A and B local bodies can function with up to 50% of staff and up to 25% in Category C areas. Only essential services will operate in Category D. The remaining 50% staff A & B places and 75% in C, and officers from all sectors should be involved in Covid prevention activities. District collectors should take the initiative to give them the responsibility for the work. Since only essential services operate in the D category, the vast majority of employees will be part of the preventive measures. Areas with a high prevalence of the disease are considered clusters. At the same time, a micro-containment system will be introduced.”

The CM added that vaccination should be combined with contact tracing and testing. 'Kerala has already been assessed nationally as an effective vaccination state. We are at the forefront of the zero waste stage and higher dose vaccination. At least 60% of the population in the community needs to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity to the disease. A third wave is unlikely to occur if herd immunity is achieved to the required level by strictly following the Covid protocol. The third wave will not occur naturally. It is caused by the flaws in Covid control and failures in vaccine supply. So at this stage, the state government is trying to give at least one dose of vaccination to everyone as soon as possible. Everyone should be careful to avoid small and large crowded situations where there is a risk of rapid spread due to the presence of delta virus.'

17,518 new Covid-19 cases were reported in Kerala today from 1,28,489 sample tests in the last one day with a TPR of 13.63%. Meanwhile, 132 recent deaths were confirmed as caused by Covid taking the related death toll in the State to 15,871. Today 11,067 patients tested negative having recovered from the disease. At present, there are 1,35,198 patients under treatment in the State. There are 271 LSG areas with a TPR above 15%.

The Chief Minister informed that vaccine distribution in the state is progressing well. 'So far, 1,77,09,529 people have been vaccinated. Of these, 1,24,64,589 received a single dose of vaccine and 52,44,940 have received both doses. The Department of Health has launched a campaign to give Covid vaccine to all pregnant women. Those who can register on their own will be encouraged to do so. People who do not have access to smartphones and computers are vaccinated by registering with the help of Asha activists. So far, about 40,000 pregnant women in the state have been vaccinated.'

Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan’s speech in the Assembly presenting a resolution on Lakshadweep under Rule 118

Thiruvananthapuram: (news.kvartha.com 31.05.2021) The unique way of life of the people of Lakshadweep is being tampered with attempts being made to impose a saffron agenda and corporate interests. It started with painting saffron colour on the coconut trees and it has now grown to an extent that would destroy their habitat, life and natural relationships. Banners put up on the island against the Citizenship Amendment Bill were removed and those who wrote it were arrested in Lakshadweep.

The people of Lakshadweep have adopted the practice of living peacefully in general and they usually shower their love on the guests. Steps have also been taken to bring in the Goonda act in Lakshadweep, where crime is rare. Such measures have been taken in anticipation of any protests and to silence any voice of dissent. A dictatorial system of governance is being developed through these measures.

The aim is to destroy fishing which is the foundation of people's livelihood there. The sheds where the fishermen's boats and nets are kept have been destroyed. Steps are also being taken to eliminate beef which is an important part of the staple food of the people there. The Sangh Parivar agenda of banning cow slaughter is being implemented through the back door. Measures are being taken to ban cow slaughter and beef, and to close dairy farms. The Administrator is now taking the lead in gradually destroying the life and culture of the people of Lakshadweep.

Steps are being taken to abolish all existing democratic systems in Lakshadweep and impose bureaucratic domination. The powers of the District Panchayat and the Village Dweep Panchayat has been transferred to the Administrator. The Departments of Fisheries, Health, Education, Animal Husbandry and Agriculture are also being removed from the purview of the District Panchayat. An administrator who does not have the authority to directly intervene in these departments was empowered to do so by an order. In doing so, the Central government is undermining the island's usual democracy by deploying officials of their choice.

They have also brought out a bizarre order related to the elections. The attitude that those with more than two children should not contest in the panchayat elections is unheard of in our country. They are trying to implement that as well. As a result, the vast majority of the islanders will lose their democratic rights.

As part of protecting the island community's habitat, culture and security, the existing law states that no one outside the island has the right to purchase land there. Similar law prevails in many parts of India also. But reforms are also being implemented as part of making changes to it. There is a directive that the ownership of the land and the building should be renewed every three years. Failure to do so will result in a fine of Rs 2 lakhs and a fine of Rs 20,000 per day. This process is increasingly becoming impractical for those who work and live in far off places.

Kerala and Lakshadweep are regions that have been intertwined for centuries. Many of the islands were under the administration of the Arakkal dynasty of Kannur prior to the British occupation, Until November 1, 1956, Lakshadweep was part of the then Malabar District. Lakshadweep has a way of life and culture that is closely associated with Kerala. Malayalam is their main language. There are Malayalam and English medium schools on the island. Major institutions including the High Court are functioning in Kochi. Freight arrivals and departures are based on the ports of Kochi and Beypore. Attempts are now being made to break this historically interdependent relationship.

The encroachment on the culturally unique features of Lakshadweep and its distinctive way of life cannot be accepted for any reason. In many parts of the world, strong resistance has arisen wherever there have been attempts to undermine the living conditions of the people. Thus there are many people who became orphans in their own country. That should be the lesson and such heinous acts should not happen in India. All sectarian separatist movements are carried out in the interests of the forces that oppose the unity of the country. Seen from that historical context, the future of Lakshadweep is worrying. There are concerns that it will go unnoticed on the minds of the entire Indian people and Kerala shares that concern. It is an attack on the cultural identity that people value, in a way that beats even the actions of the colonial rulers. This is completely alien in a democratic culture with a pluralistic face. Therefore, anyone who upholds constitutional values must register a strong disagreement with the actions of the Lakshadweep Administrator.

The activities taking place in Lakshadweep today should be seen as a practical lab of the Sangh Parivar agenda. They are trying to change the culture, language, way of life, and food of the people in a way that suits them. They are also taking steps to disrupt the livelihoods of the people and give a red carpet welcome to the corporates. Strong opposition must be raised against this attempt to enslave people to corporate interests and Hindutva politics. Only then can the vision of ‘unity in diversity' that underpins the very existence of the Indian nation as envisioned by the national freedom movement be preserved.

The Central Government has a responsibility to ensure that the unique characteristics of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep and its people is preserved. The Administrator who challenges it should be removed from his responsibilities.

The House should unanimously pass a resolution calling on the Central Government to take immediate action to protect the lives and livelihoods of the people of Lakshadweep.

State prepared to face calamity arising out of cyclone: Kerala CM

Thiruvananthapuram: (www.kvartha.com 14.05.2021) Kerala Chief Minister, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan today informed the preparedness of the state in facing any calamity arising out of the cyclonic storm. According to the Central Meteorological Department, the low-pressure area in the south-eastern Arabian Sea has intensified into a severe depression. Even though, Kerala is not in the predicted path of the cyclone, heavy rains, strong winds and strong sea gusts are expected in the State till May 16.

The Chief Minister said, 'We should exercise utmost caution in districts and adjoining districts where the Meteorological Department has issued a Red and Orange Alert. The cyclone is developing and moving faster than expected. It is likely to move north from the Kerala coast by tomorrow. The northern districts of Kannur and Kasaragod are most likely to be affected by the winds. Winds are also expected in nearby districts. Therefore, it is important to be prepared for the dangers of strong winds.'

The CM informed that necessary steps have been taken to relocate the vulnerable people in all the places. 'People should be prepared to move to the safe camps set up by the local bodies and the Revenue Department as per the instructions of the Disaster Management Authority. Extensive preparations have been made in the state for the cyclone. Central and State forces are ready to deal with any emergency.'

Nine teams of the National Disaster Response Force has been deployed as a precaution. Currently, NDRF is deployed in Kollam, Alappuzha, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts. The Army DSC has deployed one team to Kasargod and two teams to Kannur. Two teams of the Army are on standby in Thiruvananthapuram. An engineering task force is also ready in Bangalore. Two Air Force helicopters are on standby. They will be assisted by state police, fire brigade and trained civil defence volunteers.

The fisherman should not venture into the sea till further notice. The formation and development of low pressure is being closely monitored by the Emergency Operations Centre of the State Disaster Management Authority. Further information will be communicated to the public in a timely manner. The control rooms of the District Disaster Management Authorities are open throughout the day.

38,607 Covid cases in Kerala today, Government to give priority to second dose vaccine; Announces partial lockdown from 04-09 May

Thiruvananthapuram: (news.kvartha.com 29.04.2021) 38,607 new Covid-19 cases were detected in Kerala today from 1,57,548 sample tests (Test Positivity Rate of 24.5%). 48 Covid deaths were also confirmed. The number of patients under treatment for the disease in the state has gone up to 2,84,086 even as 21,116 patients have recovered from the infection today.

Briefing the media, Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan said, “The review meeting held today decided to impose further restrictions in the State from May 4th to 9th (from Tuesday to Sunday) in addition to the weekend lockdown already in place. Existing restrictions will be strengthened. At the same time, instead of imposing a full lockdown as the last resort, people should practice self-lockdown.

Priority for second dose vaccine

The Chief Minister today informed that the state will give priority to those who are eligible for the second dose of the vaccine. “There is no need to rush to Covid vaccination centres for this. The second dose of Covi shield vaccine should be taken within 6 to 8 weeks and Covacin within 4 to 6 weeks. A list of those eligible to receive the second dose of the vaccine at each vaccination centre will be available on the Cowin portal. Accordingly, the managers of the vaccination centres will inform them with the help of Asha workers and local body members. The slot for the first dose will be allowed for online booking only after giving preference to those taking the second dose.”

It is now estimated that vaccinating the vast majority of people over the age of 60 in the first phase of the Covid outbreak has helped reduce mortality in the State. “We have been able to successfully implement early vaccination and this is the reason why the mortality rate is not rising proportionately despite the current rapid spread of the disease. This fact underscores the importance of the goal of getting the vaccine to as many people as possible” he added.

Transportation and supply of oxygen to be made easier

The Police department will make sure there are no issues with oxygen transportation. The Home Secretary and the Health Secretary are already working to ensure the availability of oxygen. The Secretary, Department of Industries has also been directed to liaise with the industry regarding the availability of oxygen. Vehicles carrying oxygen cylinders, medicines and medical equipment should be marked clearly to help police identify them to help them provide safe passage through traffic.

A committee has been set up under the Home Secretary to monitor the availability of oxygen. The oxygen module will be prepared and added to the Covid Jagratha portal. This will help in better utilisation as oxygen stock figures will be available in each district, which will be collected under the direction of the District Collectors.

First Stretch of National Highway 66 Six Laning; Construction period of 2 years and 15 years maintenance period

Mumbai: (news.kvartha.com 25.02.2021) Uralungal Labor Contract Cooperative Society has been awarded the contract to develop the 39 km road from Thalappadi to Chengala on National Highway 66 (formerly NH 17) as a six lane road. The road development, which is part of the Bharat Mala project, is being built in hybrid annuity mode along with maintenance of 15 years.

Ahmedabad-based Adani Group, Hyderabad-based Megha and KNR groups also participated in the global tender. The Uralungal Society won the contract in competition with these groups. This is the first time that the Uralungal Society has participated alone and won the contract of the National Highways Authority.

This is the largest contract ever awarded to a contractor from Kerala. The Uralungal Society is the only contractor from Kerala eligible to participate alone in the tender for the National Highway Development Program, which includes projects such as the Bharat Mala and the Golden Quadrilateral Super Highway. Uralungal is also the only co-operative society in the country that can undertake such activities.

The Society got the contract for the first stretch from the state border for ₹1704.125 crore. This is ₹132 crore less than the second lowest bid. Adani Group bid ₹1836.49 crore, Megha Group bid ₹1965.99 crore and KNR Group bid ₹2199.00 crore.

The construction period is two years. The estimated cost is ₹1268.53 crores. Only 40 percent of the contractual amount will be allotted during the construction phase. The rest of the amount will be given as 30 installments during the remaining 15 years. The contractor, Uralungal Society, would have to secure 60 percent of the construction cost and also bear the interests on its own.

The tender process for 11 stretches from Thalappadi to Kodungallur and three stretches from Paravur in Alappuzha district to Kadampattukonam for the six-laning project from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram has been completed. Others will be completed soon.

Kochi: (news.kvartha.com 19.02.2021) The coronavirus pandemic, originated from Wuhan, China has created negative impact in all walks of life, including the entertainment sector that faced a drastic setback due to the closure of theaters. Amid this pandemic situation, a team of young film aspirants has made use of the lockdown period and begun their own production company 'The Next Film Productions'. This Mollywood production company is the brainchild of actor Ijaaz Ebrahim, and his friends Suhail Shaji and Sangeeth Krishna.

How young brains are reshaping Mollywood

Ijaaz Ebrahim is an actor who has played crucial roles in several Mollywood movies including 'An International Local Story', directed by Harishree Ashokan. He was also involved in the online promotion works of superhit movies including Fahadh Faasil's Varathan, and Joju George's 'Joseph'.

However, due to the coronavirus lockdown, the online movie promotion business faced a setback, and several movies signed by Ijaaz were halted. It was during this time that he thought about launching a new business.

'I was pretty sure that the entertainment sector will be revived one day or the other. Being an actor and a film buff, I used the coronavirus lockdown period to prepare a masterplan to launch my own production company,' said Ijaaz Ebrahim.

To start this dream venture, Ijaaz Ebrahim joined hands with Suhail Shaji, an assistant director, and Sangeeth Krishna, an experienced hand in the art direction department.

'The Next Film Productions is currently busy with the works of two short films which will be directed by Sangeeth Krishna, and we are already in talks with some leading directors, both in Mollywood and Kollywood for our first feature film. The film will be a high-voltage thriller and it will feature some of the big names in South Indian industry,' said Suhail Shaji.

Apart from being busy with the works of the Next Film Productions, Suhail Shaji is also gearing up with his directorial debut 'Typical Kaamukan'. The script works of this movie are progressing steadily, and the shooting is expected to begin in the coming months.

On the other hand, Sangeeth Krishna has worked as a camera assistant in movies including Kumki 2, and Kaadan, which is simultaneously being made in Hindi as Haathi Mere Saathi.

Hype in YouTube short films

Apart from the Next Film Productions, several other Mollywood film production companies were also launched post the coronavirus outbreak. Several short films were released recently, and some of them received rave reviews from audiences.

One among such short films was Freedom@Midnight, which starred none other than Anupama Parameswaran in the lead role. Written and directed by R J Shaan, this short movie narrated the story of a married couple who faces a dilemma in their relationship.

After Maharashtra, bird flu has been confirmed in Delhi as well

Mumbai: (news.kvartha.com 11.01. 2021) Delhi has become the tenth state to confirm bird flu cases after Maharashtra. Eight samples, including four from a park in Delhi's Mayur Vihar Phase III, three from Sanjay Lake, and one from Dwarka, all are positive for avian influenza. Dr. Rakesh Singh from the Animal Husbandry unit said. Imports of live birds and poultry markets in Delhi and other affected states have been temporarily closed.

In Maharashtra, bird flu has been confirmed and the order has been issued for culling the birds within a kilometer of the epicenter in Parbhani and Latur, the Animal Husbandry Commissioner said. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will convene a meeting to review the situation. Parbhani is located at a distance of 500 km from the state capital Mumbai. District Collector Deepak Madhukar Munglikar said about 800 birds had died in the last two days.

In Uttar Pradesh, the Animal Husbandry Department has advised people not to go to zoos and bird sanctuaries and not to come in contact with any kind of bird. Authorities have been asked to confirm that any unnatural death of the bird has been reported.

The states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Gujarat had earlier confirmed that avian influenza was the cause of the bird deaths.

GAIL natural gas pipeline, a fulfilment of Government's promise: Kerala CM

Thiruvananthapuram: (news.kvartha.com 05.01.2021) Kerala Chief Minister, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan today said that the commissioning of the GAIL liquid natural gas (LNG) pipeline was a fulfilment of the promise given by the state government to the people. He was speaking during the virtual inauguration ceremony of the Rs 3,000 crores Kochi-Mangalore LNG pipeline project by Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi.

In his address, the CM said, “The government overcame all obstacles of the project by addressing the legitimate concerns of the people. He recalled that in 2014, GAIL had suspended all work on the pipeline due to several issues that cropped up. Of the 450 km long Kochi-Mangalore pipeline, 414 km is in Kerala. It is natural for people to face difficulties when implementing big development projects but despite these problems, they cooperated with the project. This happened because the government was able to convince them that this project is crucial for the all-round development of Kerala.”

The project was completed after overcoming many legal hurdles and protests. The biggest challenge was to lay the pipe through densely populated areas, hilly areas and under rivers but GAIL officials worked resolutely to complete the project.

The CM congratulated the GAIL officials, District administrators, police and other government departments who worked together to overcome the obstacles. He also congratulated the workers who toiled tirelessly to complete the project despite the challenges like the floods, the Nipah virus and the Covid pandemic.

The completion of the pipeline project will help expand the city gas supply chain thereby, increasing the availability of natural gas for domestic use. The project will also help in the development of FACT and the realisation of the proposed Petrochemicals Park. This would bring great development in the energy sector as well, the CM added.

CM gets accolades from Centre

Thanking the Kerala Chief Minister for his support in making the GAIL pipeline a reality, Union Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan said, “This grand project would not have been completed without the support of the CM. The joint efforts of the Central and State Governments to complete the GAIL project are an excellent example of cooperative federalism.

In his address, the PM congratulated the people of Kerala and Karnataka for completing the project and said the project will make a significant contribution to the economic development of both the states.

Kerala Governor, Shri Arif Mohammad Khan; Karnataka Governor Shri Wajubhai Wala and Karnataka CM, Shri B S Yeddyurappa, were also present via video conference.

Background

The GAIL pipeline project to pipe natural gas from the Kochi LNG terminal to Mangalore and Bangalore was approved by the Central Government in 2010 but until 2016, only 48 km of the pipeline could be completed. The project was revived in 2016 when this government came to power. The compensation was doubled and populated areas were excluded from laying pipes as much as possible. The width of the land required was cut down from 30 meters to 10 meters. Those with less than 10 cents of land were given permission to build a house on the land apart from Rs 5 lakh in relief. The compensation for lost crops was raised.

The government constantly intervened to address the concerns and grievances of the locals regarding land acquisition, compensation and security. The CM directly and continuously monitored the progress of the project. As a result, the government was able to lay 330 km of pipelines within the first 1,000 days. Now, other states are trying to emulate the successful Kerala model.

Government approves outdoor sports training in Maharashtra. Sports competitions may start next month

Mumbai: (news.kvartha.com 18.12.2020) The Maharashtra government has given permission for outdoor sports training in the state such as cricket, football, and tennis. The central government had banned sports training and competitions since March as part of a nationwide lockdown following the epidemic.

The government's announcement was a great relief to thousands of national and international athletes who have not been able to train for the past nine months. Several sports organizations from different parts of the country had approached the government seeking permission to resume sports training. Permission to hold sports competitions in the state is also likely to be granted soon.

The Mumbai Cricket Association has started preparations to host the Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty 20 Cricket Tournament. The state government has asked all federations and associations to strictly adhere to the government’s Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP).

In the meantime, 28 recent deaths were confirmed today as due to Covid and the related death toll is now 2,418.

51,893 samples were tested during the last 24 hours and the test positivity rate is 9.21%. A total of 66,08,606 samples have so far been sent for testing.

The district-wise figures for those who tested positive today for Coronavirus are Malappuram 664, Kozhikode 561, Thrissur 476, Ernakulam 474, Kottayam 387, Kollam 380, Thiruvananthapuram 345, Palakkad 341, Alappuzha 272, Kannur 223, Wayanad 213, Pathanamthitta 197, Idukki 169 and Kasaragod 75. At the same time, 5,924 patients have recovered from the disease. Meanwhile, 28 deaths were confirmed as being caused by Covid and the related death toll in the state is now 2,298.

56,993 samples were tested during the last 24 hours and the test positivity rate is 11.08%. Till now, a total of 63,78,278 samples have been sent for testing.

There were 48 medics or paramedics among those infected. Meanwhile, 26 deaths were confirmed today as due to Covid and the related death toll in the state is now 2,270.

During the last 24 hours, 58,809 samples were tested and the test positivity rate is 9.14%. A total of 63,21,285 samples have so far been sent for testing.

There were 61 medical personnel among those infected. Meanwhile, 25 deaths were confirmed as caused by Covid taking the related death toll in the state to 1,796.

57,202 samples were tested in the last 24 hours with a test positivity rate of 9.68%. Till now, a total of 53,07,067 samples have been sent for testing.

The district-wise figures of the patients who tested negative today are Thiruvananthapuram 304, Kollam 578, Pathanamthitta 165, Alappuzha 371, Kottayam 394, Idukki 250, Ernakulam 1,008, Thrissur 1,062, Palakkad 299, Malappuram 569, Kozhikode 786, Wayanad 83, Kannur 214 and Kasargod 36.

So far, 4,28,529 people have recovered from Covid in the State while at present, there are 77,813 patients undergoing treatment for the same.

There are a total of 3,15,583 people in isolation across various districts of the state - 2,96,773 at their homes or institutional quarantine centres and 18,810 in hospitals. 1,993 persons were hospitalised today.

Four places in Alappuzha, Kozhikode and Ernakulam districts were declared as hotspots today even as 10 areas were exempted. Presently, there are 616 hotspots in Kerala.

Thiruvananthapuram: (news.kvartha.com 01.11.2020) Covid-19 was confirmed in 7,025 persons in Kerala today while 8,511 patients have recovered from the disease. 6,163 were cases of local transmission and the source of infection was not known for 712 cases. There were 65 medical staff members among those infected. Meanwhile, 28 deaths were confirmed today as being caused by Covid taking the death toll in the state to 1,512.

The district-wise figures for those who tested positive today for Coronavirus are Ernakulam 1,042, Thrissur 943, Kozhikode 888, Kollam 711, Alappuzha 616, Thiruvananthapuram 591, Malappuram 522, Palakkad 435, Kottayam 434, Kannur 306, Pathanamthitta 160, Idukki 148, Kasargod 143 and Wayanad 86. Of those diagnosed, 85 persons have come to Kerala from outside.

The count of those infected through contact from the districts are Ernakulam 841, Thrissur 920, Kozhikode 870, Kollam 702, Alappuzha 591, Thiruvananthapuram 453, Malappuram 483, Palakkad 222, Kottayam 431, Kannur 214, Pathanamthitta 122, Idukki 105, Kasaragod 130 and Wayanad 79.

The number of infected healthcare workers from the districts are Ernakulam 20, Thiruvananthapuram & Thrissur 11 each, Kannur 5, Malappuram 4; Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode & Kasargod 3 each, Kollam 2, and Kottayam, Palakkad & Wayanad 1 each.

The district-wise numbers for the patients who tested negative today was Thiruvananthapuram 831, Kollam 838, Pathanamthitta 208, Alappuzha 778, Kottayam 474, Idukki 353, Ernakulam 808, Thrissur 1049, Palakkad 390, Malappuram 890, Kozhikode 1042, Wayanad 132, Kannur 548 and Kasaragod 170.

At present, there are 89,675 patients undergoing treatment for Covid while so far a total of 3,48,835 people have been cured in the state.

There are currently 2,93,622 people under observation in various districts of the state, 2,71,499 under home or institutional quarantine and 22,123 in hospitals. 2,667 persons were admitted to the hospitals today.

50,010 samples were tested in the last 24 hours and a total of 46,95,059 samples have so far been sent for testing.

Seven new places were declared as hotspots today even as 22 areas were exempted. Presently, there are 671 hotspots in the State.
