One of the most romantic days of the year is upon us once again, and millions of people are racing to buy last-minute roses, chocolates and jewelry for their significant other. Yes, the feeling of love is surely great to have for your special someone, but what about for your career? We asked our team members what they love most about working for KWA Construction; here’s what they had to say:

“KWA culture believes in sound, moral character with an emphasis on doing the right thing. Employees are empowered to be decision makers and build strong quality relationships both internally and externally.”

“The culture at KWA should be envied by other companies/organizations as personal development, flexibility, family values and fun are at the epicenter of KWA’s company values. Not everyone gets the privilege of being able to work doing what they love, but since most of us find ourselves having to earn a living, then we should seek employment with a company that we love working for – and KWA is that company for me.”

“KWA didn’t just offer me a career, they also offered me a second family of sorts. You become part of a team where everyone is valued.”

“I cannot imagine working for a different company, ever again. I love this company, its leadership and everything it stands for.”

Want to fall in love with your career, too? Visit our Careers page to explore open positions.

For most of us, technology makes life simpler and more social, as well as keeps us in the know with current news. At KWA, we recognize that this digitally-connected way of life can – and should – also be true for the building industry. To test this theory, KWA has accepted the challenge to implement a digital job site environment and is finding that incorporating these tools are allowing them to work more cohesively, efficiently and increase the quality of work.

To create our digital job site, we have blended a variety of technology solutions including Procore, the cloud-based project management solution, 60” touch-screen smart monitors, as well as personal tablets and computers. The addition of these tools enable our team to work more collaboratively and instantly share documents and updates among team members, managers and owners. Additionally, the digital plan table allows us to video conference and conduct live meetings with KWA headquarters, developers and other field offices. These tools are proving to be extremely beneficial to our clients. Below we have highlighted a few examples of how implementing a digital job site has benefited our company and clients.

Instantly Up-to-Date

Construction projects inherently consist of numerous stakeholders. To be able to provide an environment in which we are simply better connected with team members is invaluable. The incorporation of digital plan tables, tablets for each of our employees and Procore has allowed our teams to complete projects more efficiently and with increased quality, despite the surrounding fast-paced and challenging environment.

For example, field operations staff no longer need to check in with the office to determine the status of a critical RFI or a pending submittal. With just a few clicks they have instant updates on all construction documents, regardless of where they are on the jobsite. This has cut down time required for project team members to receive updates, as well as increased our ability to devote our time where it matters most – walking the jobsite.

Additionally, having the digital plan tables onsite has increased efficiency in subcontractor communications. Meeting minutes, plans and specs are all able to be accessed instantly, and the large screen allows for easy collaboration. The online-based translation tool even helps our non-Spanish speaking employees communicate with tradesmen more easily.

Paperless Project

Perhaps one of the most bothersome aspects of a general contractor’s job is having to use and store numerous large printed documents in the field. By managing construction documents electronically, we have been able to drastically reduce the number of printed plans and documents needed on site. As a result, our projects have experienced the benefits of maintaining changes more efficiently, improving the flexibility and organization of work spaces, the ability to move freely from point A to B without huge amounts of paper in tow and ultimately saving money on something that could not be incorporated into our client’s product.

Digital- The New Way of Life

With consistent developments occurring on construction sites, it is imperative for team members to be able to provide each other with updated information in a timely, convenient manner. The implementation of the digital job site has vastly increased our team’s effectiveness and streamlined our communication processes. Overall, the digital job site has proven to be an extremely helpful infrastructure, and in turn, the new way of life for both our project teams and satisfied clients.

Recent trends in student housing have made for an exciting time to be in the multi-family development business. Long gone are the days where university students cram themselves into 300-square-foot dorm rooms, vying for personal space and living alongside miniature appliances. Between the increases in student populations and their higher standards of quality, off-campus student housing has undergone a major makeover.

According to Axiometrics, an apartment and student housing market research data service, more than 47,800 beds are expected to have been delivered nationwide by privately-owned student housing properties at the end of this fall semester alone.

On-campus housing has lagged behind both the growth rate in students and their expectations of quality in their living quarters. However, the old and outdated on-campus dorm rooms are slowly becoming a thing of the past, and developers have been able to pick up the slack by adding high quality and reasonably priced living options for new students.

Texas in particular has seen its student populations swell recently, with Texas A&M leading the charge by being in the top 15 universities in the nation for new off-campus bed supply. A total of 1,850 off-campus beds have been delivered to College Station in 2016 and more than 2,300 are expected in 2017.

KWA Construction contributed to these additions by completing the Cherry Street Apartments in College Station prior to the 2016 fall semester. The 200-bed, 108,005-square foot apartment complex sets the standard for students’ rising expectations of quality. The apartments offer modern amenities like granite countertops, while the complex is equipped with a resort-style pool area, an outdoor theater and a communal entertainment/study space.

With student enrollment continuing to increase each fall, the building industry can expect to remain busy constructing new – and more lavish – off-campus housing.

Although construction is KWA’s specialty, we take a special interest in supporting communities long after the building process is over. Some may call it philanthropy – we just call it being a good neighbor.

We understand that the best way to make a positive impact is to establish a relationship with the local community to better understand its needs. In honor of Arlington Commons, one of our projects currently under construction, we chose to address a big necessity in the city of Arlington – school supplies.

Last month, during our annual company outing to the Texas Rangers baseball game, we hosted a tailgate to which admission was granted with a school supply donation. Together we collected more than $500 worth of donated school supplies to support Mission Arlington, a local organization that helps provide supplies for more than 9,000 children per year.

“As a company, we believe it is our responsibility to continue to support the communities we helped build,” said Brian Webster, President at KWA Construction. “We believe it fosters a sense of unity, not only between us and the community, but also within in our workplace.”

This year also marked KWA’s eighth annual company service trip to the Samaritan Inn, the largest homeless program in Collin County. Samaritan Inn not only provides shelter during displacement, it also offers a comprehensive program that teaches self-sufficiency to help break the cycle of poverty and homelessness. The staff at KWA is honored to get to serve so many families and individuals who are unmistakably focused on gaining their independence and improving the lives of others.

Because we recognize the value of our employees’ interests, KWA has established an employee-ran philanthropy committee which gives a voice to our staff and lets them choose the causes we help as a team. In addition to organized efforts, it is also company policy to offer our employees paid time off from work to volunteer.

We understand that every effort can make a difference, so whether we host a company blood drive to help someone in need or sponsor a Habitat for Humanity homebuilding project, our company-wide passion for supporting the community is accomplished in many different ways. As KWA Construction grows, so will its dedication to building communities, not only through its work but also through its philanthropic efforts.
