Paula’s guests today will share the story of the production Noises Off at the Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault, Minnesota. All of my guests today are great supporters of the arts and active volunteers in southeastern Minnesota.

Ryan Heinritz is the Executive Director of the Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault, Minnesota.  Visitparadisecenterforthearts.org for details on programming, events, and ways to support this non-profit arts organization. The mission of the Paradise Center for the Arts is to create a vivid and energetic cultural center for the community and region.

Kathy Rush is the Technology and Circulation Services Coordinator for the Northfield Public Library. She is a member of the board of directors for the Lockwood Theater Company.

What they also share in common is a role in the production NOISES OFF at the Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault, Minnesota.

Northfield Mayor Mary Rossing has been selected, along with more than a dozen Minnesota mayors, by Governor Dayton to advise the administration in its efforts on tax reform. The Tax Reform Advisory Group for Local Government Aid (LGA) will review and discuss policy issues related to LGA–specfically how to best pay for local services while holding local property taxes down. The amount of LGA given to cities is about half what it was a decade ago. The work of the advisory group will directly support the governor’s comprehensive tax reform proposal, which will be presented to the 2013 legislature.

The newly renovated Northfield Historical Society is hosting a special event later this month. Civil War enthusiast and amateur historian Jim Stark will discuss the origins of the American Civil War in his presentation, “Why the Civil War was Fought: The Antebellum Period.” The event is the first of a series of discussions about the Civil War during the war’s ongoing sesquicentennial. After reading extensively about Civil War battles and leaders, Stark, a former president of the Northfield and Rice County historical societies, says he wanted to learn more about the causes of the war. The event, sponsored by KYMN and the Northfield News takes place at the Northfield Historical Society on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 6 p.m.

NORTHFIELD – The Northfield Fine Arts Booster Club is seeking donations of new or used band and orchestra instruments for its new
“Instruments for All” program. A fund drive is set for Saturday, Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. to noon in the lower level of the high school cafeteria. Drop off instruments, supplies and gently used lesson books and receive a receipt for your tax-deductible donation. A
matching grant from the Northfield Area Foundation will double the value of the donations. The booster club also is accepting cash
donations to repair donated instruments.

The goal of the “Instruments for All” program is to put an instrument into the hands of every Northfield student wanting to
participate in the band or orchestra program. During school hours, band instruments can be dropped off at the Bridgewater Elementary School office, and orchestra instruments can be dropped off at the Northfield Middle School office. For more information, call Wendy Smith at 507-664-9304.

Rice County is continuing its stepped up DWI enforcement through September. It’s part of the county’s effort to make the area’s roads safer. Rice is one among 13 counties that accounted for nearly half of the state’s alcohol-related deaths and serious injuries from 2008-2010. Heightened enforcement in the 13 counties began in October of last year. Overall, alcohol-related deaths have dropped in recent years, including in Rice County, but alcohol-related deaths still account for one-third of the state’s total road deaths. A DWI offense can result in the loss of license, possible jail time, and thousands of dollars in fines.

Carleton College has received a nearly $190,000 grant from The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. The grant is in support of the Summer Connections project, which will provide scholarships for high-achieving, low-income high-school students to attend Carleton summer academic programs. The grant is renewable for up to three years and will increase Carleton’s ability to make summer programs available to students who otherwise would not be able to attend due to financial reasons. In summer 2012, the grant will provide scholarship funding for 41 eligible students.

The Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce has named Laura Baker Services its business of the year and Chuck Pryor Business person of the year for 2012. In a press release, the chamber recognizes the Laura Baker Association as a premier provider of services to people with developmental disabilities. In addition, Laura Baker is one of the larger employees in the community with a nearly $3 million payroll and 146 full-time employees. The chamber recognizes Pryor for his encouragement of economic development efforts leading to improvements in the area. The annual banquet for this year’s honorees will take place at the Grand Even Center on March 8th.
