• The Northfield city council has unanimously approved a year-long employment agreement with City Administrator Joel Walinski. At a closed-door session on March 2^nd, the council conducted a performance review, indicating Walinski has met and or exceeded expectations. Several council members expressed a desire to spend more time on the review process in the future. In spite of the favorable review, Walinski will not receive a raise. The council, in response to recent budget shortfalls and cuts in local government aid, passed a resolution in August of 2009 mandating zero percent annual increases and no step increases for all employees for fiscal year 2010.
• The Cannon River appears to have crested in the Northfield Area on Tuesday. As of this morning, it was down about a half a foot from yesterday. That's according to information provided by the National Weather Service. Northfield Police Chief Mark Taylor, however, cautions there are factors that could continue to be cause for concern—such as rain or snowfall this weekend. Chief Taylor says the city has 1,500 sandbags ready to go, should they be needed, for flood-proofing.
• Minnesota Foodshare's March campaign is past the half-way mark. The goal to raise 85,000 combined dollars and food pounds. Here in Northfield, Just Food Co-op is participating. Marketing and Member services manager for Just Food, Joey Robison says the local goal is 1,000 combined pounds/dollars. So far, the total of the first week's food donations and cash raised is 447. Robison says that's right where we want to be. Robison says money raised will be used to buy gluten-free food items from the co-op to donate to local food shelves. Minnesota Foodshare is in its 28^th year. The March campaign is the largest food drive in the state, restocking more than 260 food shelves across Minnesota.

• Local officials continue to keep a close eye on the Cannon River. Northfield Police Chief Mark Taylor says there's some good news: the river appears to have crested in the Northfield area yesterday. However, Chief Taylor cautions there are other factors that could continue to be cause for concern—including rain or snowfall over the weekend. Chief Taylor says there are 1,500 sandbags at the city's disposal, should they be needed for flood proofing.
• After much discussion, the Northfield city council last night voted unanimously to approve plans and specifications for the reconstruction of 4^th street and adjacent blocks and to authorize bids for the improvements. Much of the discussion leading up to the vote revolved around trees and other methods of enhancing the streetscape in the area. After further discussion, the council unanimously passed another motion, giving authority to staff to put some trees in the sidewalk area. At its March 2nd meeting, the council voted to approve a scaled back option for the area. That option was suggested by the Historic Preservation Commission as an alternative to a plan submitted by the streetscape task force. KYMN will have more coverage of last night's council meeting throughout the week.
• Area Republicans endorsed candidates for the upcoming house and senate elections. About 200 delegates and seated alternates met in New Prague yesterday and endorsed Al DeKruif of Elysian to run against incumbent (DFL) Senator for District 25, Kevin Dahle, and Kelby Woodard of Belle Plaine to face (DFL) Representative David Bly in district 25B.

• The Cannon River has casued some flooding in and around Northfield. According to a statment issued by Northfield Police Cheif Mark Taylor, the Northfield Police Department and City Emergency Management Director are monitoring the Cannon River and following National Weather Service information and bulletins. The statement goes on to say the public will be alerted to any updates as necessary. KYMN will post any new information as it arrives.
