Although I am fascinated with all types of knives, combat knives have always held a special interest for me, especially when they reflect the skills, training and experience of a qualified designer. After all, when you're willing to literally trust your life to a knife, you tend to give it your best effort.
A few months ago, I was looking at an ad from TOPS knives and noticed a knife called the "Prather War Bowie." Its simple, functional lines immediately caught my eye and piqued my curiosity. After a brief email exchange, one was on its way to me for review. When the knife arrived, I started doing some research on the man behind the design and it all began to make sense. All the design features that drew me to the knife were there for good reasons stemming from a wealth of personal experience and training.

The War Bowie's integral guard is simple and very effective. It also places the cutting edge in line with the knuckles, allowing accurate cuts without knuckle banging.
Battle-Bred
The designer of the Prather War Bowie is Jeffrey Prather, a lifelong martial artist, Special Forces veteran and accomplished instructor. The details of all of Prather's experience and accomplishments are beyond the scope of this article, but to understand the logic behind the War Bowie's design, I think it's important to include some of them here.
Prather has been a practitioner of the Japanese martial arts for 42 years. The primary focus of that study has been ninjutsu, the famed art of the ninja. A shihan ("gentleman example" or "master teacher") in the Bujinkan organization, he has trained directly under the renowned Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi for 27 years and is one of a handful of 15th-degree black belts in that system.

A Spanish company called Extreme Polymer Research has developed a line of polymer cases for a number of handgun cartridges and plan to bring them to market next year.

Unlike polymer shotgun cases, these cases do not have a steel base, they are entirely polymer. I asked the company if they have had any problems with the polymer melting or malfunctions in high temperatures. They responded in saying that the polymer selected for the cases is also used to build automotive parts and has been tested in temperatures ranging from -40 to +150 degrees celsius without problems. They tried some transparent polymers, which would allow visual inspection of the power load (and be very cool!) but these did not function correctly under stress.
The primary benefits of these rounds is consistent quality and pricing that is not dependent on the rising cost of copper.
Extreme Polymer Research will only be producing cases for straight-walled low-pressure handgun rounds (.380, 9mm, .40 & .45) because of the problems inherent with polymer cases necked rifle rounds. A few companies have tried producing rifle ammunition with polymer cases but they have all failed.

The ammunition will go on sale next year in Europe and hopefully the USA. The retail price in the USA will be in the 6 to 8 cents/case range.

There's no mistaking the heritage of KA-BAR's Big Brother. Clearly they've taken a trusted World War II combat veteran—the Marine fighting knife—to entirely new levels.
Aside from the generic class of large fighting blades that Jim Bowie forever attached his name to, there's probably no better-known or more recognizable "fighting" knife in history than the famed KA-BAR of World War II ancestry. The knife was originally developed and manufactured by Union Cutlery and adopted by the United States Marine Corps in November of 1942 as the 1219C2 Combat Knife (later designated "USMC, Knife, Fighting/Utility" and "MKII Utility Knife" for USN issue).
With input from USMC Colonel John M. Davis and Major Howard E. America, the USMC fighting knife was created with a 7-inch clip-point blade, fullers on both sides to strengthen and lighten the blade, a peened-tang steel disc pommel, straight steel crossguard and a stacked-leather grip. Steel surfaces were coated with a non-reflective matte phosphate finish to eliminate the glare. Later modifications switched the center-peened pommel disc retention to a cross-pin through the tang and disc, and the crossguard was slightly curved to the rear. The new pattern was subjected to field trials with favorable results.

The parentage is obvious, along with the size difference, between the Big Brother on the left and author's well-used Marine Fighting Knife at right.
It was cheap to manufacture, rugged, had enough blade to reach vital organs as a fighter and enough heft to dig, chop, and de-vegetate in a pinch if it had to. When it began appearing in combat arenas, supply couldn't keep up with demand, and as many as four different companies supplied the USMC combat knife to the military under contract during the war, and Union Cutlery later changed its name to "KA-BAR Cutlery."

Serrated teeth on the spine are a mixed blessing: good for some types of cutting, bad for batoning and choking up on the blade.

In the last few years, participation in the Revolver divisions and ICORE has taken off to levels not previously seen. The sport is largely dominated by Smith & Wesson revolvers, but lets say for a moment that you want to be different and want to shoot something else. That means that your choices are limited to either an old Colt, a Taurus, or a Ruger. Of those three, the Ruger is the one that's actually going to work well and has some aftermarket support for sights and action work. We'll look at all the different revolver sports and divisions and see what Ruger revolvers we can shoehorn in there.
IDPA SSR

Ruger GP100 with 4 inch barrel - in .38 Special, this would be THE Ruger for IDPA SSR competition. It's heavy, rugged, and dependable. You can slick up the action as well, and there are even a decent number of aftermarket sights for it.

IDPA ESR

Things get a little tricky in ESR, because Ruger doesn't have any revolvers that are cut for moonclips. However, Ruger does make their excellent Redhawk revolver with a 4 inch barrel chambered in .45 Colt. For just $100, you can send your Redhawk cylinder to TK Custom, and they'll machine it to accept moonclips, making the Redhawk perfectly competitive in IDPA ESR. Plus, you get awesome points for shooting a .45 Colt.

USPSA Revolver Division

The problem with USPSA Revolver Division is that the most competitive guns have longer barrels and make major power factor. I think there's a case to be made for minor PF in revolver division, and so if it were my gun, I'd take a Ruger GP100 in .357 Magnum and have it cut for moonclips. Obviously, I'd want the gun with the six inch barrel. Then the only decision would be whether or not to shoot major PF loads or minor PF. Factory .357 makes major pretty easily, and some "cowboy" .357 rifle loads are right in the 175 PF butter zone.
Alternately, I'd use the exact same gun I'd built for IDPA ESR in USPSA revolver. Sure, the barrel's only four inches, but otherwise it's pretty well set up.

ICORE Open/Limited

You're going to be at a major disadvantage in either of these divisions, since Ruger doesn't catalog any 7 or 8 shot revolvers in .38 Special. I honestly don't have a great solution for this other than cutting a 6 inch GP100 for moonclips and hoping for the best.

ICORE Classic

Classic division on the other hand…well, let's just say that the GP100 would do VERY well here. While it's currently dominated by K and L frame revolvers, there's no reason that a well set up Ruger could give them a run for the money.

So with a little ingenuity, you can definitely shoot revolver divisions with a gun that doesn't say S&W on the side of it. If you're the kind of guy that wants to buck the popular trends, grab a Ruger GP100 and head to the IDPA matches!

Sabato 23-07-2011 insieme ad un caro amico, campione di questa disciplina, sono andato a fare una giornata di allenamento che mi è servita ad imparare un pò di cose

Mi sono divertito molto e una volta tornato a casa ho montato un video suggestivo di un paio di esercizi svolti, ci ho lavorato per un oretta e questo è il risultato!

Spero vi piaccia, nel realizzare il video ho cercato di trasmettere le emozioni che ho provato durante lo svolgimento degli stage, buona visione!

I absolutely love this stuff! The red tint makes application easy, and better yet over application difficult. Just the right mix of viscosity so it doesnt run for the hills as soon as it hit the piece. Really smooths up the action, doesn't require a great deal either and it doesn't gum up in the cold which up here in Minnesota is a REAL problem or over long shooting sessions. Do yourself a favor and always keep a bottle handy.
