From the ways we live, express love, spend time; to the way we work, shop and even commute - the normal ways have hardly made sense or at best we have had to re-validate our sanity at every expression that has a semblance of what used to be normal.

I had to live with knowing it meant love, to strictly avoid my 1-year old daughter’s outburst of love upon my entering the house after a long day of needing daddy’s hug – It became normal to not hug her until I have had a wash and now safe for her, for her own protection.

Did you ever imagine that spending time in fellowship with other saints, lifting up holy hands and professing your love and devotion to your savior at the capacity of your vocal or emotional cords would be luxury?

For most, when you hear the word dIsRuPtIoN, [yes, It is typed that way intentionally] it means being thrown into confusion, disorder, chaos, loss … [fill in the gap] and for others it is simply ‘a break or interruption in the normal course or continuation of some activity, process, pattern etc’. Simply? Yes, I did not embrace the use of ‘simply’ with the ‘chaos’ we had been schooled to associate dIsRuPtIoN with until several modules and a few thousand dollars later – thanks to Cambridge Judge Business School!

You see dIsRuPtIoN means advancement for everyone on the divide that is in the direction of the wave it brings. To the person feeling the wind of dIsRuPtIoN, It simply blows where it wishes, affording such only the sound of its movement while mystifying where it has come from or is headed.

This wind blows where it wishes and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it is coming from and where it is going…permit me to transport you to the other divide by completing this statement “so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit…” John 3: 8 (Amplified)

The Holy Spirit leading you EVERY STEP of the way is how you can simply understand dIsRuPtIoN as the advancement, thriving, living at the core of His purpose for you. The focus here has to be about consistency in alignment, It is the only way as we hardly have another as Christians. I will let you figure what ‘consistency in alignment’ translate to for you – It is a personal journey!

That this new year 2021 and beyond is everything I have confessed, prayed, ‘faithed’ etc is solely linked to how much I let the ‘Spirit Lead Me’ …I leave you with the song I have had on repeat for most of the year.

WHO IS THIS?

21.When they approached Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples [ahead], ²saying to them,“Go into the village opposite you, and at once you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me. ³If anyone says anything to you, you should say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and without delay the owner will send them [with you].” 4 This happened so that what was spoken by the prophet would be fulfilled, saying:

What is it that you have with your name on? That job? Wife? Child? Husband? Sibling? Money? Intellect? Strength? Beauty? Body? Position? Right? Will? Disposition? Attitude? Social Media page? Free Time? What or where is that point where you exercise that bit of authority – your authority? What is that thing that you POSSES? There was that divine call to the ones who had the donkey, the colt - in their name.

That divine call to let go of it. For what? To be ridden. For the Lord’s use!

Broken away from the hustle and bustle of our grind and the ‘importantness’ of live as usual. How intentionally are you WILLING AND ABLE TO give it ALL UP for the Lord’s use? Are you able to deny yourself and actively ensure that on all fronts EVERY item with your ‘mark’ on it whole and summarily reflects the glory of God, to his purpose?

For it beats my imagination – for what part of a King speaks of being lowly? Where else does royalty and lowliness meet? That as the minimum, wouldn’t a horse have been more suiting for a King? My imagination beaten – alas it had to be a donkey…a lowly beast of burden.

Was it the first? Did we not also receive the King in a manger and not a palace?

A donkey that had not been used was considered holy. One consecrated to the use of the noble. Set apart intentionally for divine purposes. The preparation of the vehicle (the donkey) and its path with the very essence of what they clothed, adorned and protected their bodies with; I find symbolic. Symbolic of the fact that they stripped themselves of all they were, for the purpose of the Triumphant.

And when he entered the city (Jerusalem) the city literally trembled and they asked one question –

WHO IS THIS?

May I also ask you ONE QUESTION? Are you giving up that thing you posses (in humility) to the end that everyone who comes in contact with you get to ask – WHO IS THIS? What is the source of the Triumphant life that you live?

What is your Windshield Conviction?

I had an interesting conversation with an Uber driver recently and while I was genuinely interested in his story, he triggered a different pattern of thoughts in my subconscious – unlocking a series of questions. Will you ride with us for a minute?

Me: So why do you have 2 Canadian flags on your windshield? Not Nigerian flags? Or that of any other country?

Uber Driver: My brother, I am tired of this country and I want to leave. I bought 2 and put 1 up there but my son put up the other one. That country is just the best place to live in, the environment is so…, the people are so…, work there is so… etc

Me: How do you know all of these? Have you been there before? I know of many opportunities back here in Nigeria. For example, I once met an Uber driver who has bought a fleet of cars from the business.

Uber Driver: I have a friend who lives there. Just after 5 years he started sending money, cars and other items to his family back here. I have another friend who just got a Federal Government job here too but he got it by divine intervention – everyone else had to know someone. When I try to save to buy my own car, something just takes the money up. I am tired of having to know someone to make it – I am leaving for Canada, soon.

Me: So what have you done about this? Do you know the process? Cost? Have you started working on this?

Uber Driver: It is capital I need now o! It is very expensive. I know I have to do one test…ermmm ILTS…

Me: You mean IELTS – Test of English? So do you at least have an idea what it will cost? Have you found out about the process? or other requirements?

Uber Driver: I haven’t o but I will travel soon.

Your guess is as good as mine.

This man has 2 flags stationed on his dashboard (owning his view daily) because he is convinced about a better life he hopes for, solely based on stories he got from a friend who claims to have experienced a better life while being in that environment.

He rarely has other validations besides his ‘current state’ of finding things 'hard'. Yet he hardly has information on how to go about his lofty dreams but he affirms that he would achieve this dream soon.

So I asked myself…(and you should too)

What lofty dreams do I hold so dear that I have coloured the space of my everyday view with? What are the basis of these dreams? Have I validated the authenticity of this basis? Have I taken steps to find out what it requires to birth reality of these dreams - If I have duly validated them? Or am I clutching unto this dream with the thread of ‘hear-say’?

You may say you do not have a dream per say but what subconscious desires have you acquired from another person’s experience without adequately validating if these should be yours too?

Will you take a minute to clean, re-access or have a WINDSHIELD CONVICTION?

Or are you contented with obstructing your current journey with an unfounded, shallow rooted dream? Will you be intentional or let everything else control your plans?

WHAT ARE YOUR WINDSHIELD CONVICTIONS? WHAT IS YOUR JOURNEY ABOUT? It indeed is a good time to check through and be realigned as the new year beckons.

YOUR HEALTH IS A CURRENCY

Incessant visits to the doctors for those lower back pains, increased risks of heart diseases, diabetes, obesity or just general musculoskeletal pains are far from the kinds of expressions you would want to live out after contributing your quota to making corporations great while building yourself an amazing career and retirement haven. Indeed, it is all worth it to ensure that beyond fulfillment and passion, you make enough money to fund your dreams, raise and support family and live life to the fullest.

Yet my question is - Should this be at the detriment of your health?

How long would you live life to the fullest for if your health is a battle zone?

I am privileged to have parents who have invested an upwards of 20 years of their work-life working for present day top-tier banks and besides the fact that I have learnt that my kids deserve a balance of both currencies (the me and money), I have also learnt that these interesting careers - and the sedentary lifestyles they lavish us with, can have long-term effects on our health - now and in the future.

I try to own my current health status and that of my future by doing the following

Taking short 5-minute walks after every 2-hours of sitting (you should try walking to that colleague’s desk instead of using the phone or email). Set reminders to help you do this amidst your busy schedule. I actually walk around within my office when I have to make calls as well.
Taking lunch breaks. You need to build the habit of taking lunch breaks even if you are not eating, which should not even be the case. It helps a lot to get some time away from the work-screen-stare and possibly watch a video, play some music or speak to someone, talk to family over the phone etc.
Ensuring that I sit upright and constantly snap myself out of slouching.
Dimming the brightness of my laptop screen. Our eyes suffer from the prolonged flooding of bright light as I feel this while I try to shut my eyes from time to time while working.
Placing my laptop (keyboard) inwards on the desk to allow me at least rest my wrists on a platform – laptop or desk. This takes out the pressure of suspending my palms and hands.
I start out my day with a to-do list and nest my email reply times amidst my schedule to ensure that I maximize my work-time and avoid extensive unproductive hours.

You should do some research, yet for starters - May I quote some part of a doctor friend’s recent article on the effects of prolonged sitting?
Dr Chris wrote

“During protracted sitting, large muscles in the lower limbs are inactive and this reduces metabolism. Also, there is a decline in muscular utilization of blood glucose in the body. As a result, the excess body glucose is converted to fats which deposit in the blood vessels. The accumulation of fat in the blood causes a plethora of health risks if left unchecked”

It is also very crucial (that for those of us who are privileged to have some decision making responsibilities that influence the productivity of our teams) to ensure that we keenly focus on ergonomics while designing or improving the work spaces for our teams constantly. Remember, you are as strong as not just your team but your team’s weakest link.
People say time is money. My teams must be tired of hearing me say this…

What you give your employer is your time. The time within which you use effort (skills, abilities, energy etc) to convert tasks into the deliverables that feed the bottom-line. Without good health, you would not have the time nor sanity to deliver the effort. This is besides the pains and travails that accompany ill health. Your time contains everything it carries – skills, ideas, solutions, good health etc. The money you earn is your time in your hands, your good health afforded you that time.

Are you intentional on how you spend the time (money) you can never recover?

I have had the rare privilege to support a lot of people in their quest to unlock the next level in their career – whether in finding a job, switching between jobs or career paths, or simply around unlocking their X-factor (as my friend and sister Dupe tagged the last #CareerBrainStormingSession).

On the heels of this, the shocking & limiting perspectives we tackled (with the help of these amazing speakers - Tunde, Seyi, Adebola and Dinma ) on Saturday at the CBS 3.0 and the several people who reach out to me daily, I thought to share this – The most basic and important ingredient you need to unlock ‘YOU’ is WHAT YOU CURRENTLY HAVE ACCESS TO !!! And I have heard a lot of people echo back – ‘Oh, I don’t even have a job?’ , ‘My current job has nothing to offer’, ‘I do not have any skills’, I do not even know where to start from’ among several other lines.

You need to step back and think through these –

1.What about your person, past and current tasks can be of value to other people, a prospective employer or the world around you?

I have been both angry and amazed at a lot of people after spending time with them asking the right questions around what they do and how they have expressed these. For example I interacted with someone who had his role abbreviated into 3 letters on his CV and LinkedIn profile, 3 letters that I could not make sense of. 3 letters behind which he buried away the amazing things and results he brings to his employer daily. Employers look out for value. Abbreviations hardly convey this. What are the key results you are recording? Communicate these with the use of metrics - for example, 'I developed a customer management tool that cut down the waiting time per customer by about 50%'

Once discovered, then ask…

2. Are you properly articulating this – in your daily encounters, your CV, your LinkedIn profile etc? What exactly are you doing with the minimum of 4 hours daily (5pm – 9pm) left after you contribute to your current employer?

Why get off the bed shortly before the time you are required to be at work when you can gain an extra hour to add an extra skill to yourself? You invest not just your working hours to your employer but the other hours it takes to prepare to get to work (including your commuting hours), yet you expect to grow at the pace your current company grows at?

You seek a job yet you spend less than 1 hour a day actively working around this forgetting that your only job at that moment should be preparing and seeking for a job? Consistently researching companies, identifying requisite skills and adding them to yourself and ensuring you follow closely the people who currently do the jobs you aspire to be in.

One of the speakers at the CBS mentioned that s/he was recently seeking for someone with a required set of skills who s/he was going to pay $1000 DAILY to engage. YES, there are jobs out there irrespective of where you are. The question is - Do you have or are you building the requisite skills?

Preparation meets opportunity. There are people out there who you can have assist you in getting there (around articulating your details etc) but the question is,

Are you showing enough grit?

PUZZLING OR SCALING?

CAVEAT – THE PURPOSE OF THIS POST IS NOT TO SOLVE THE PUZZLE.

I found this puzzle earlier today, shortly after I shared with my contacts via WhatsApp status with the tag ‘Where are the smart people on my contacts list?’ . I got over a hundred feedback within 2 hours. A few of the answers I got were 28, 50, 14, 11, 35, 10, 70, 12… etc from this same image. Feel free, take your shot and drop your answer as a comment below.

THIS POST IS ABOUT THE SEVERAL LESSONS THE FEEDBACK STIRRED UP.

A lot of people reacted too quickly. Some people reacted with such speed depicting that they were trying to validate their smartness. Most people were very pressured by the caption, hence lost the attention needed to pick the details. A few people just wanted to give it a shot. I know a few people who were trying to get my puzzle right ‘this time’. There were few people who waited and then coasted on the answers others gave. Several people rapidly changed their answers, they kept seeing some new information after their last reaction. Very few people took their time, reflected on what the puzzle was anchored on and then responded accurately.

I insisted on a show of workings and eventually asked for lessons learnt.

THIS POST IS ABOUT THE LESSONS LEARNT and a few were…

1. Be aware of subtle pressure points that take your eyes off the goal

2. Attention to details and how you interpret them matter a lot

3. You will have better outcomes if you respond rather than react

4. Own your mistakes and grow on them quickly

5. Have the basic skills (in this case knowledge of mathematics) you require

6. A successful attempt is still an attempt. Make an attempt, it is the only way to know if you will succeed.

COURSE CORRECTING

If you live and drive in Lagos, you will have had your fair share of other drivers veering into your lane – whether with honest ignorance or with intentional ignorance (I term this arrogance). Depending on your level of togetherness - as a culture or at the time of incident, your response could range from a silent swivel of your puzzled head to the seeming nerve-calming expressions of your vocal cords. I could never explain this phenomenon to (one of the best line managers money cannot buy -) Josselin while he was Nigerian.

Pathetic as it seems, some of us who are fully aware of the dangers of veering off your predefined lane still have our moments when we live in the reality of being the culprit – whether as a protest to the initiating culprit or for some ‘explainable’ reason on losing ourselves momentarily.

How many people will arrive at destinations if everyone veered off - every time? How more chaotic will it be if everyone was driving at a 100km/hr while veering off?

Can we take this notches higher? Considering the speed of an airplane, the plethora of other items pilots deal with (lets tackle turbulence some other time) ; would you imagine how catastrophe in a plane veering off the its coordinates by say 5 degrees?

Thankfully, a car has a steering wheel designed to give hints on what direction the wheels are facing per time. A lot of times road markings and signs, kerbs and sometimes a simple glance out the windshield helps nudge the mind on how straight or curved the road ahead is and thankfully alignments always ensure positive results. An airplane is blessed with the inertia guidance system (INS) and air traffic control that always ensures you and I arrive safely, on time and at the right destinations.

A lot of times a good and careful driver has to make consistent and slight adjustments to the steering wheel in alignment to the course of the road set ahead. This is similar to the concept pilots achieve flying with. I call it COURSE CORRECTING!

We are indeed the drivers or pilots of our lives. Our daily necessities deaden the need to course correct every once in a while. Our loaded, strength and time sapping routines loudly silences the rationality of a course correcting moment or the energy required to have one. Slowly but steadily, we drift away from having consciously solid relationships. Intentional and undistracted time pockets to edify our mind and spirit are rarities. Healthier food choices elude us. Our personal inhibitions and emotions per time robs us of deeper contacts and results. That momentary decision to be unconcerned with our deep yearnings or right action beyond the hurt or personal discomfort felt. That one piece of item littering your space that adds another until it has a name – clutter.

As drivers or pilots, how do we retrace our steps?

A non-exhaustive guide to course correcting

1. Get a source of inspiration and stay connected. The project manager in me likens this to the Initiating process group. A driver or pilot usually relies on an ‘inspiration database’ of some sort. Be it the driver’s knowledge of the routes, google map or plain old simple road signage and markers. Airplanes usually have air navigation databases and coordinates to begin with. Define your source and stick to it. It could be an overall source that gives overarching direction or you may need to localize this. My only caveat is that one never gets inspired beyond the capacity of one’s source.

2. List and organize the areas you would want to be more effective at. Get the right metrics to measure yourself by. This reeks of the Planning process group of project management. With the source identified and the specific destinations and navigation pathways aligned, you are in business. It is critical to gather and determine what your critical success measurement factors will be before you set out as this will ensure that they are unwavering due to situations along the way. How else would we measure success if we do not set benchmarks? Set course correcting reminders for yourself on the listed items. Surround yourself with people who help you get critical devoid of those emotions that could cloud your thoughts. Set markers around you – vision boards, images and audios of your destination as constant reminders.

3. Act, measure and correct. The executing, monitoring and controlling process group all play in this number. The driver and pilot will first need to objectively compare the degree of alignment. This would have to be done with a clear mind, no wonder there are alcohol limits for pilots and people are generally advised not to drive when drunk. Being drunk impairs one’s sense of judgement just as our emotions does. To accurately course correct sobriety is a necessity. The real work here is to find what jolts you into the right frame of mind as without the right frame, a picture is less defined. Adjust on the move. It would not always be painless. True sacrifice bleeds. Triumphing over your inhibitions will birth one thing - the you no one else can be.

The strength of an illusion is inherent on how convincingly it mirrors normalcy. Do not let your goals elude you. Course correct – constantly!

CULTURING DECISIONS, BIRTHING STRATEGY.

With my eyes shut and such heavy strategy names like Sun Tzu, Niccolo Machiavelli, Carl Von Clausewitz, Karl Marx, Alexander Herzen, Mikhail Bakunin; their documented lives and the practical ways they employed strategy running through my mind [thanks to my new Strategy Bible – ‘Strategy: A History’ by (Emeritus professor of war studies) Lawrence Freedman (Financial Times best book on strategy from as far back as 2013)]; I cannot but shake my head and mind to the myth we have crowned strategy with today…

“ ‘What is strategy?’ Is the most googled phrase that contains strategy”. Those were the words of Bradley Brezinski (one of my strategy mentors).

Despite the plethora of materials and resources in our knowledge-age; people, corporates and entities the world over still strive to substantiate the essence of strategy. I am not going to add to the over 2 billion results google fetches you when you type the phrase -‘What is Strategy?’, but I would simply touch on one of the very many crucial aspects of implementing strategy in a corporate environment.

Of what good is all the strategy in the world without its implementation? May I swiftly accentuate organizational CULTURE and possibly make sense of how it may help to implement strategy.

Borrowing a leaf from Wikipedia, Organizational culture encompasses values and behaviors that contribute to the unique social and psychological environment of a business.

Organizational culture is a chief influencer of the way people react within an entity. Since implementing strategy boils down to how people act and the corresponding reactions to those actions, its indications, counter-indications and the allocation of resources through it all; then it is key to initiate a cultured (pun intended) reaction zone in the least.

No one else is better positioned than the manager – whose primary work is making decisions. An effective manager (that thinks through the process before deciding) directly influences the actions and inactions of others, whether with direct reports or verticals. At work yesterday, I made several decisions and whether I want to or not, I will be making more tomorrow. Deciding nothing is in itself a decision until I have the power to freeze time.

These daily decisions form the cradle of culture. Not that fancy prose the HR and/or executive team came up with. Those are at best the stated values and they have to be exhibited, then become behavioral norms that influence decisions. Everyday decisions especially by managers who directly influence the actual ‘doers’ in every organization drive culture.

It is critical to expend resources in initiating the cultured zone within which managers and decision makers (with influence on people and teams) will execute the everyday decisions as this is the core of the last-mile in implementing strategy.

In Peter Drucker’s words – Culture does eat strategy for breakfast!

…opening my eyes to this Ah-mazing (as Yemi Faseun puts it) quote on page 575 cannot be mere coincidence, as it sums up my exact closing thought

Are you on a ‘DIE yeT’?

Whether or not we pronounce the word, its use and essence has become crucial to a lot of people. There are all sorts of diet phrases springing up daily – from the common and almost forgotten ‘balanced diet’ to the other trending uses – hair, exam, detox, vegetarian, belief-based and especially not forgetting the diet coke (that one you take when you want to feel like you are reducing your sugar intake). Truth is when we use the word ‘diet’ with another, we more often than not are saying we are laying a focus on the word – usually to enhance the other word or its existence. There is usually one or more of these words, a selection, regulation, restriction, limiting, reduction, focus etc - when a diet is mentioned.

The origin of the word diet reflects ‘a manner of living’ and ‘an idea to LEAD one’s life’.

A diet is conclusively a sort of regimen of consumption of or exposure to a substance, concept, or an idea or the lack of it. KayodeKOLADE.2016

Whether you decide it or not you are on some sort of diet about different areas of your life. Determining a final destination, an outcome or a desired result would help tailor and fine tune your diet course.

Who you are today (spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, career-wise, financially) is as a result of the diet you lived on yesterday. A little conscious sacrifice today will yield great gains tomorrow.

I have always been entrenched in the school of thought that

‘If you have been a good manager, your absence shouldn’t hinder your team’s delivery’.

The last two weeks have been nothing but a confirmation. This is not a piece intended to blow my own horn but to critically analyse the veracity of my postulation. And of course the youngest member of my team is 6 months old as I am a strong believer in Tuckman’s teaming model.

I have been away from my team of about 50 colleagues and I cannot remember losing sleep (well except from my excessive intake of fine brewed Kenyan coffee). I have had a couple of skype calls, had to pick on one or two emails, quell a spark or two; but I have been able to achieve consistent delivery and continuous improvement REMOTELY! I would love to birth a theory off my postulation. Hence, the motive of this post.

Would you agree that being away from your team is a good way to evaluate its efficiency?

Your scorecard? Would effective delegation and coaching be the strongest indices?

Would inclining one’s management style towards Magregor’s Theory X & Y be an edge?

What would you consider the greatest assets in building a strong, result-delivering team – one that functions well even in your absence as a manager? Or should I say ‘Leadager’?

A 3-MINUTE PITCH - THE TRAFFIC STOP HAWKER APPROACH

To many people the traffic stop means very many different things. Are you in the driver’s seat? Hold it! Yes, a traffic stop means more than one thing. To one - a stop and to another ‘time for action’. Yet, right now it is about to mean a whole article to you. Can we for a second leave the driver’s seat and take a seat at the back of the car?

Are we there yet? Great!

“It was 6:38am, and need I say that I navigate this route every day of the week to get to work early. Just as I slammed the brakes, the corner of my eyes caught this young man who had about a dozen watches in one fist - arranged in a manner that with a slight turn, your eyes would catch whichever of the watches he wanted to sell you.

The other hand he used, both to gesticulate and get some attention. So as he approached this car in front of me, he turned his fist slowly and intently. Unfortunately, the driver, his buyer did not fancy any of the goodies in that fist. Seeing this, while taking quick glances at the traffic light, he dug his other hand into his pocket and it emerged with one watch. This time his buyer could not take his eyes off. Seeing the buyer’s reaction, our traffic hawker kicked off a negotiation. At this time the buyer had reluctantly wound down his side window. After what I believe was some price tagging, the seller beckoned to pass the watch into the car through the now more open window. Buyer had the watch in his hand, evaluated it more and just then…

The red light gave way…

Buyer had watch in his hands. Was stuck on what he had seen and was now holding. Seller made to stretch his hand into the car and I was expecting that he would take back the watch and not let his buyer delay us from ‘obeying’ the traffic light…instead it was a fist full of Naira notes. The traffic hawker had made a sale”.

Thoughts from the actions of the traffic hawker

There were at least about fifty cars held back by the traffic light but the hawker choose that one - maybe the nearest to him or just the first on the long queue of cars. Whether it be based on deep analysis or intuition, Take those steps towards the next thing.
He turned his fist to watch the reaction of the driver to his stack of watches while being friendly with him and was sensitive enough to know when the driver didn’t find his conversation interesting, reached out for ‘the better watch’ and then regained the driver’s attention.
He was smart enough to keep the price at a ‘win-win’ point and sealed the deal at the best price considering ‘other things’ with his keen gaze on the changing traffic light.

CONCLUSION

Do your research, test your markets and employ even your sixth-sense to study your customer’s body language.
Swift body language hypothesis and analysis is key to a successful product management, customer acquisition, investor buy-in etc. Have your A-game right up your sleeves.
Know when to skillfully slide into your target’s territory. Be emotionally intelligent.
Be mindful of the timing. Make it concise, bespoke and be focused on the broader picture.
Find the traffic stops and while at it decipher what the lights mean to you, your competitors, your customers, your investors, your staff etc.

STANDAPTATION?

As even SMEs/Start-ups start out on a global scale (how else do we tag an SME/Start-up with healthy social media followership?) , I pondered to myself, “Would the age long debate on Standardization and Adaptation hold (as it is a great deal for International entities attempting to play in specific local geographical locations)?”

An organization may either choose to run the same models across all its locations and through all its dealings irrespective of peculiarities WHILE another may decide to tailor its models according to the perceived diversities and requirements in the various locations and interactions with all contacts.

Hence, the two forked road many travel - Standardization and Adaptation.

A man dressed in a custom-fitted suit is obviously differentiated from another with a standard-fitting suit. With no personal bias intended, one would most likely perceive these two men and possibly categorize them into two different schools of thought. This could also typically tell you one or two core things about them, if I wouldn’t be stretching it too much – personalty, ideologies, value systems etc may be scanned off a solution from being custom or standard fit.

I am of the opinion that at best a strategy would be efficient at capturing the ever swiftly changing needs of the end user while ensuring quality by keeping a standardized core while adapting the peripherals of that core. By this I typically mean that an excellent strategy should ensure standards with functionality but can then thrive with the flexibility of adaptation on the ‘contact’ end. In my experience as a Construction Project Manager, it is key to state that as much as a building’s aesthetics and eventual feel can be played with and amended to drive the ‘contact’ home, the structural elements can hardly be touched-for an edifice that intends to stand.

Having seen the slack that erodes working business models in the name of ‘Standardization’ and the lack of control that drowns established towering entities in the name of ‘Adaptation’, I have come to a swift rebellion that ‘Standaptation’* is the key to the future of strategy. Since I coined the expression, may I define

‘Standaptation as ensuring that the structural elements of an entity’s strategy is kept in sync while its peripherals are tailor made to adequately deliver quality. (where quality is defined as the degree to which the strategy meets requirement by the end user eventually either as a means to get financial consideration for profit making entities and/or a means to get obligatory considerations to non-profit entities). ‘

I must agree that standardization helps plan effectively and ensure contingencies are in place and adaptation ensures efficiency in achieving business results.

Shall we then standardize for adaptability? Make a standard of adaptation?

I do not grow by watching time pass while being idle. Once that whistle goes off, the match isn’t just about the 90 minutes anymore but much more about the number of goals first and the quality of showmanship the inadequate 90 minutes can convey.

I do not grow by chewing on my biro in that exam hall and then expect to see an A+ on the result sheets, because to start with, the lecturer has to first read my script (and not a blank page) to know whether I deserve a pass or a fail.

I definitely did not learn how to drive by what I have heard nor read about driving or by being locked away by my own self-afflicted fear of the will-i-crash syndrome, I simply got behind the wheels.

Or which one of us think we would have been here to read this, all grown up and normal (hopefully) if our parents just sat staring at us without feeding or nurturing us, saying, 'My child would soon be 1, chai! He will be ALL GROWN up'.

STIR...

Is it the time that is responsible for the growth or what we consciously fill the time with? Whether or not you fill it up with something, time remains time and growth is not more of a custodian than a revealer.

Without actually getting in the game for the goals, filling the paper with words and getting behind the wheels; how would we ever know if you could score the goals, wow the examiner and really drive a car.

Happenstance...?

As I walked briskly out of the office, in strides long enough to reinforce how determined I was not to be late for the midweek service in church, those words hit my pinna...

Wetin I wan go do for heaven, na so so coke and fanta dem go dey share for dia. Whereas WE go dey pop champagne for hell every night...party go plenty!

My feet opposed the law of motion as my entire body stood still to give my office security guard a 'you-are-dying-from-verbal-diarrhea' look

His words, however carelessly said, echoed in my mind.

Musing time...

The worth of your value system is directly proportional to the worth of your 'driving beneficiary' .Your driving beneficiary is buried deep in the core of who you are (not who people think you are).

Whatever it is you are deciding or silent about (whether in a false attempt not to decide-which is invariably a decision also OR in the innocence of not knowing better);whether it seems transient or far reaching; spontaneously or thoughtfully; there is the sure influence of your value system!

Not sure about what your worth is? Carry out an imaginative reconstruction of your decisions.

But consider...

Do the birds of the sky sow or reap? Do they have brains to be analytical? A mind and heart, to dream and plot or feel like you do? Yet they achieve satisfaction with their daily needs.

Do I need remind you that I created the birds of the air after its kind but the Godhead did you after 'ourself'? That the bird had no particular reference while you have the image and likeness of the Godhead as the reference point?

Have you ever taken time out to see how beautiful the wildflower is? So magnificently beautiful that it makes Solomon normal in all his splendour. A plant flourishing so well in the wild, yet 'twas never seeded of any one's intent.

That without toil nor spin doth the lilies of the field dwarf Solomon’s splendour? Yet the lilies (-the grass in the forest, that didn't need my breath to be) are here today and burnt up tomorrow while you who I predestined to be here even before the foundations of the earth was established; you whose everyday is marked in my palm from while you were yet in your mother's womb; and this same you that I lavished with all of myself on the cross expend yourself to toil and spin. How more little and indeed non-existent can your faith be?

Are you a tragedy? Forgive the question but what i term the greatest of tragedies is life lived the same way everyday. Letting your potential remain potential is the greatest tragedy there can ever be. If God can do through you much more than you can imagine, what are you waiting for?

Dream forth your potentials and take a deliberate (however small) step to change that little thing and watch your potential turn kinetic.

Irrespective of how glorious the present seems, tomorrow always had greater shine. Leave behind the shine of yesterday,your tomorrow lies in taking this bold step.

...She is more

After a hard day's work, as soothing chilled air oozes out of the airconditioning vents, my toes wriggle free of my socks, arms stretched as my lips give away a silent yawn and my back hits the bed and just then I shut my eyes and I gazed upon my heartfelt desire...

I feel (so deeply) her focused love and tears-provoking passion for God and the things of God. For I can be certain that she would then be able to love me close to how much I would do her.

Realizing how pivotal loving Him is (to her life) definitely births depth in her person. The kind that see things from more than her set of eyes, the kind that knows just how silly I am and still knows how irreplaceable I will forever be, the kind that is focused at play and toil, that kind whose smile always holds more.

The woman who would see sense(however irrationally) in why I can't stand Eba, will manage pounded yam and work at ensuring that I have a better eating habit before I corrupt my unborn children with 'sweetthingsomiasis'.

That gorgeous angel that realizes that I have always fantasized about long hair, starry eyes, a cute frame and lovely fingers but still wears her short hair, normal eyes, bespoke frame and fingers just the way they are.

She knows how far I could go to wear an unreasonably expensive fragrance, that wristwatch...oh! the shades...and get her the most expensive gifts ever and still be my financial custodian, allowing only the expedient!

No wonder she understands that I love to sit beside her while she drives us to church, watch me while I pound her yam for lunch while my parents are visiting and that I eat her 'kokorised' semo with mixed feelings.

That at all times finds it safer to bear it all out to me, have us face the misunderstandings, lessons learnt and makeups...while we consolidate our own story, not just her ideas, her mom's or other advisers.

The kind that after reading all of these (unlike the one who thinks to herself...'He seeks a perfect woman'), smiles and deeply wishes to be all and more but realizes that this may be the 'feared path of perfection', a mortal man's dreams but still knows that even if she isn't half of all of these...she is more,much more than she is!

...with eyes still shut and body totally curled up around my pillow, i can feel my lungs expand considerably within me as i inhale a long burst of chilled air and i turn around and afford myself another deep gaze...

MAKE HAY

Matter…

Make hay while the sun shines - an expression we say more often than we use its meaning.

Mass and Premise…

Hay making is a process that has existed for several thousands of years and is the longest established method of conserving grass for feeding livestock through the periods when it may be impossible to get good grazing. Successful haymaking relies on the crop of grass being thoroughly dried before it is stored.

The first step in hay making is the cutting of the grass. This must be done when the weather is fine and several continuous dry days are expected. Hay that has been rained on is of poorer quality and may be unpalatable.

Force, Stirs and purges…

While a man admires the greenery, another makes hay of it. Are you living in the dreams of how green your future is for too long a period of time that you have created a more future future of what should be your present? Do you just see the green in the grass (or the lack of it) or do you see the hay locked in it?

Hay is not made by just knowing the grass has the potency. The first step to making hay is cutting the grass. The grass may not dry up properly, the blisters may find home in your palms and yes the grass will be all over your apparels but you are free from the thought of ‘what will happen if I …’ and can move on to the next thing.

To make hay you have to be in the grass, under the sun. The grass does truly itch sometimes, the sun may cause a tan but you will not get good hay while avoiding the grass or the sun. When the sun is up, find your place in that ‘grass’, work the hay in your present life circumstances- work, relationships and even that depressing stance. Getting a tan does have its advantages.

Making hay is a harvesting. Harvesting to store for when the need to graze may arise. Even when in some perspective grass is only seen as weed (- unwanted plant). Making hay is harvesting unwanted plant. However unwanted or unpalatable a situation may seem, there is a worthy harvest in that unpalatable situation.

Find the green in the grass, go beyond the finding and cut the grass, make a harvest out of it and get a tan while you are at it. Make hay while the sun shines.

How far and wide must we sojourn to be caught in the webs of its mechanisms?

To what extent do you really exist?

To what degree must we yearn to have you in your purest form?

How must our minds be clothed and in what fabrics?

When are we right to seek you?

At what age are we ripe for your thrills and tickles?

To what would we owe your visit and departure?

In what dialects are you most potent?

To what ends am I allowed to express you?

On whose order do I make you unconditional?

In what measures do I safely dish you out?

Dish you out, in a serving that does not make the brain cripple nor the mind coward?

Of what grounds do I verify your verisimilitude?

From whom should I really expect you in all purity and no-strings-attached-ity?

How would your bearer be clad?

What rhythm would that heart reek of?

How deeply rooted should I expect you to be?

In Kirk Franklin’s lyrics, my heart echoes

LOVE, a word that comes and goes.
But few people really know what it means to really love somebody.

Irrevocably, A-Musing-ly Loved up

Everyone asks why I am the way I am

Thoughts, actions, eyes and even words quiz

So ruffled yet very truly deeply calm

Sailing through turbulent tides

Yet arriving more intact than I was before setting sail

Through the ups and the downs

Filled with praise so much that my sorrows drown

As my joy earns a raise

Songs of victory adorn my lips

Even when the air reeks of defeat

Consistently birthing the kingdom within

Practically living ‘thy kingdom come’

Even in the face of the seeming endless wait

Confused, Worried and uncertain, such was my lot

Convinced, Calm and certain, a life I live so deeply

Justified beyond words, so much that the word ‘justified’ just doesn’t fit it out.

How else would you explain that ‘…all things work together for my good’?

How much adds up to the depth of my existence ‘…even before the foundations of the earth’?

Ever had questions so deep that only tears can express?

Tears of how much I see that you love me.

Love me, so very first even before I knew you existed.

For I am weary from carrying on without expressing this to you

Every now and then, within the pockets of my ‘busy’ day

Even in the face of my most obvious blessing

Here it is, precious Lord.

I say this from my heart to you.

And this is how it all works together, adds up and starts to get expressed.

Irrespective of what the morrow brings, I so very deeply do.

For this is what I live for right now

My 1000th freebie

Griiing!!! Griiing!!! The pesky peace-snatching chime of my alarm helps start the day and after snoozing in a little while longer I roll my lazy frame off my comfort and bring my knees to the soft but sure prickings of the rug by my bed. Rubbing my face briskly as though speckles of sleep adorned it, elbows angled and hands clasped, I whispered a few words to the one who made all these and many more possible. Flipping through my bible with eyes scanning steadily for my daily bread, my soul listened for its food. Foot and ankle; shin, calf and knee; a worthy order with which my weight steadied up in the air. I made for the wardrobe, picking out my clothing for the day. With my green towel in my hands I made for the shower and walked out of it cleaner and moist. I stared into the mirror and beheld for a few seconds, my well-dressed frame and just as seconds gave way to minutes, I hit the road. With cool air brushing past my face and music filtering into my ears, I was headed for work.

And then…

With his shirt buttoned up wrongly, his pants missing every other belt-hole and his foldable staff clutched in his hands, he takes one step at a time, obviously unsure if the next one would afford him another. He feels body heat nearby and whispers in this direction, ‘Could you please help me get on a bus to Obalende?’ The other stranger obliged and while holding his hand, led him on a bus to his destination. He stepped on and made to take a seat at the empty space that was to occupy the last foldable seat and just then I said, ‘Hold on, may I help you extend the seat?’ with a thankful smile, he said, ‘Thank you sir’ and sat down slowly and carefully. While he sensed that the bus was coming to final halt, he turned to his side as though he could see or even knew the stranger beside him, ‘Could you please lead me out of the bus?’

He stood at the ever-busy bus stop, stretching out his staff and then he started making his way forward. Carefully and steadily, in a direction only he knew.

And just then…

I thought to myself. Deeply and soberly, how would it feel if I had to depend on the stranger I cannot see to take my next step? Turn to the next source of body heat to know when to get across the street? And put my weight on a staff, one I cannot even see?

How I take every ‘free gift’ for granted? My eyes see, ears hear, hands hold, legs walk, sense of smell and balance direct, and my mind births. These and many more, are a part of my daily freebies to make a difference with. And here-in lies my 1000^th freebie, ‘the ability to thank God for all these and more, willingly’.

In Genesis 30:37-39, Jacob MADE an express image of what he needed to achieve right before the sheep as they mated and they birthed the manifestation of his need. He didn’t just conceive the image but created a visible association to leverage on which was obviously beyond the present context of the sheep that were mating.

Do you live in the ‘slum’ in some area of your life and keep day dreaming of the goodness that lace the streets of the ‘city of affluence’?

If God never made ‘Him who had no sin’ and Jacob, a visible association of the express image of his need, we definitely wouldn’t have had that divine righteousness-affording-blood and definitely not a multi-varied, society-forming worthy, rare breed of sheep.
