Following the enormous success of HOBCON 09 (June 2009), SATIN ECLIPSE (October 2009), and Ai Love Cosplay (February 2010), once again CANE Events has another family oriented event this year, “HOBCON 10.10.10: the IMPERIA on October 3 -10, 2010 at the Ayala Center Cebu.

The event will be a gathering of different hobbyists all over Cebu. Imagine yourself seeing your favorite anime/cartoon characters come to life, photos that are almost real and breath taking, a mountain of your favorite collectible toys and gadgets, and the latest fashion trends designed by young designers walking right beside you! Now that’s full throttle for the whole family or group of friends. All of these will be in just one place, an empire of hobbies and arts!

HOBCON 10.10.10 presents a week long photo, comic arts, multi-media, and toys exhibit by Cebu Digital Photographers, Marvel and DC comic artists, Cebu Bloggers Society, and known toy collectors respectively that will run from October 3 – 9 at the Ayala Active Zone. And the BIG day will be on 10-10-10 (October 10, 2010) at the Ayala Activity Center starting 12 noon with live comic art sketching by Marvel and DC comic artists, the grandest Cosplay Convention of the year and the first Young Designers’ Fashion Competition!

Tsinelas’ Their Books 3 at Ayala Center Cebu

Tsinelas Association Inc. (Tsinelas) is a non-government organization that provides assistance to poor students in depressed areas in Cebu. It is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission as non-profit.

One of Tsinelas’ ways to raise funds is by holding a book sale every year. The books they sell are donated by book lovers and some of Cebu’s prominent media personalities. They call the sale “Their Books.”

Through “Their Books,” you don’t only raise funds for Tsinelas’ projects, but also promote reading by providing the public with affordable but quality books. Be part of this campaign by donating some books from your collection. By donating, you are not only helping children stay in school, you are also helping us promote reading.

Important Note: Their Books encouraged the donation of novels, college textbooks and other reading materials that are less likely to be used in elementary and high school. High school and elementary textbooks and children’s books will not be included in the book sale but are sent directly to Tsinelas’ beneficiary schools to help build libraries and reading centers.

Gears of War: Cebu’s 1st War Fashion Show

Last July 17, 2010 in Robinland Bldg., Margarita’s Family Cuisine, I witnessed Cebu’s 1st ever war fashion show. This event views war in a fashionable way pretty much different from a typical fashion show. This event was made possible by CIRAS PRODUCTION in cooperation with MOUNTAINEERING ALLIANCE to help the children schooling in Brgy. Magsaysay in Mt. Manunggal Balamban, of the CMA’s Akyat Aklat Program.

Models from this event were airsoft players. Mr. Kenneth Villaflor, model and organizer of the event shared,”We’ve been playing airsoft all the time yet there are some who just wish to watch rather than play while on their gears“. These players is what they call as the impressionists or the re enactors. “So I thought, why not putting it into good use and organize an event such as this“, Villaflor adds.

Before the main event started, a sumptuous dinner buffet was served first. Not to mention the event venue was particularly in the rooftop of the building. You can see the amazing night view of the city. The city lights were pretty much enchanting and the air was so cool, just perfect for the event. When all was finally set, the fashion show then started. Photographers particularly the media also ready with their gears. I was really amazed of the way they look. They were pretty like real soldiers gone to war. Here are some of the photos I took during the event.

Who says war is only for men and adults? Well guess again. Women and children are NOT exempted.

Of course, they didn’t leave the audience hanging. They gave mugs as souvenirs and a free photo booth for everyone to enjoy. You can check out the photos here. Congratulations for the successful event!

Grade School Kids Nationwide Unite for Good Nutrition with Kraft Cheez Whiz

A not-so-fit Future?

It has often been said that our future lies in the children of our country.

But what kind of future is in store for us when Philippine Statistics show that approximately 8 million Filipino children are malnourished?

Various nutrition education programs during Nutrition Month have been implemented to underscore the importance of proper nutrition among schoolchildren.

To teach schoolchildren about nutrition is already something. But to revolutionize it into a nationwide interschool competition for them to learn is something else.

That is why Kraft Cheez Whiz, one of the most-loved cheese brands in the country in partnership with the Department of Education has come up with Palamantasan–the first interschool competition among grade school students nationwide in a quest for nutrition education.

Education is still the key

In line with the Department of Education’s thrust to enhance nutrition education in schools, Kraft Cheez Whiz chose to do a school-based program to further raise public consciousness. “School is second to home where children learn basic lessons and values,” Alex Dan Tacderas, Category Manager for Cheese and Spoonables, Kraft Foods Philippines shares. “That is why we wanted to direct our cause and execute our program in schools–in both an enjoyable and educational way,” Tacderas adds.

Spearheaded to spread the significance of eating good, Palamantasan will not only last for the whole month of July. This nationwide nutrition advocacy will be conducted until the month of September. “In fighting malnutrition, we vie for sustainability and deep impact on schoolchildren,” Tacderas says.

Students can be Teachers

Apart from Palamantasan being an enduring learning experience, it is a transformative way of teaching those in the elementary levels. “These schoolchildren are at the stage of developing a sense of responsibility,” Paolo Serrano, Senior Brand Manager of Cheez Whiz, Kraft Foods Philippines explains. “This is why we want them to realize the significance of proper nutrition themselves–through a series of fun, creative and learning activities,” Serrano adds.

With the desire to make this competition-based campaign both feasible and fit for the participating schools, different forms of contests were prepared by the well-loved cheese brand. “These are children and we all know they prefer learning in a fun yet challenging way,” Serrano addresses. “We wanted to relay our cause to the schoolchildren through competitions,” Serrano further states.

With contests such as Jarchitecture or Jar Art, Speech Choir, Sandwich Making, Essay-writing and more, the overall wit and skill of the participating children will be challenged. “This is not only to find out how much they know about the importance of good nutrition–it’s about them having the opportunity to learn more, apply it and share it with others,” Serrano says.

Corporate Secretary and District Manager for Cebu

Marie Peluchi Tan, in the newly created role of district manager for Cebu, is responsible for the operations management as well as the marketing and product strategy for Coffeecat in Cebu.

As district manager, Marie leads a team of dedicated administrative jobholders ensuring the smooth overall operations of the Cebu branch.

Marie holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology from Cebu Doctors University, and a Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of the Visayas – Gullas College of Medicine.
