Good bye to Shell petrol station, Kajang town

The Shell Station (the only one petrol station in middle of town) has closed from 30 November 2016. I use this station as it is very convenient for me. As such, I will miss it very much. Anyway, this was the email which they circulated together with some of their old photos. All the best Kim Seng and family.

The Sin Kee Sang Shell petrol station (situated along Jalan Semenyih, Kajang, beside Prescott Hotel) was started by the late Mr Kong Siew Kuin in 1952.
Our last day of retail trading was on the 30 November 2016.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your loyal support over the 64 years of service.

We would like to share with you some old photos taken during the initial opening ceremony in 1952.

The only landmark then was the old Lutheran Church (timber building) located opposite the Shell station. This church building has since been relocated beside Yu Hua School several years ago.

We have plans to redevelop the land.

Thank you for your patronage over the years.

Giving her heart and soul for the ‘kids’

KAJANG: When Kong Lan Lee decided to quit her job as an administrative manager to become director of the Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation in Petaling Jaya, her mother, boss and colleagues asked her if she was sure.

There was no money in the career change and she was doing well at her job, her mother pointed out. But Kong was bored of the wild goose chase in the corporate world.

That was in 1990 and she hasn’t looked back since.

“The minute I went in, I knew there was no turning back,” said Kong, one of the winners of this year’s Star Golden Hearts award.

“The little ones were so cute, I just fell in love with them.”

Five years later, she moved to the Association for Special Children Kajang (PKIK) as its director.

The centre provides meals for over 40 children daily, and conducts training programmes for children, youths and adults with learning disabilities from various ethnic groups and backgrounds.

Since she joined the association, Kong has rolled out an early intervention programme for children below seven, a day training programme for persons above 14 years, an employment training programme for adults, therapies and, most recently, an independent training group home for young adults.

“I salute Kong. She did a great job with this place,” said her colleague and longtime friend, Chew Swan Im, adding that this director has always been different from the others.

“Whether a child is rich or poor, she treats everyone the same way and never differentiates according to skin colour,” added the teacher who has worked with Kong for over 20 years.

Chew recalled a time when she had trouble agreeing with some of the parents of the children with learning disabilities.

“Kong just smiled and reminded me to be patient and understanding with them because they have to care for the kids 364 days a year,” she said.

“When we make mistakes, as a boss she doesn’t scold us. Instead, she listens to our side of the story first.”

Now, 26 years after leaving her corporate job, the golden-hearted director said she was thankful for how it changed her life.

“They’re very beautiful people and they have so much to teach us on what it is to be a human being,” she said.

“It’s very gratifying watching them grow up and progress.”

Although some of the centre’s students are over 40 years old, with the eldest being 54, Kong still endearingly refers to them as her “kids”.

She has clearly helped to make a difference.

A large number of the centre’s children are those left out of the loop by the public school system due to bullying or systematic mistreatment by others.

But Kong has guided them towards living a more meaningful life by helping them build relationships, gear up for jobs, and prepare for independent living.

Some of the “kids” are certified world-class special athletes, bagging gold medals at the Special Olympics in Los Angeles and Athens.

“We teach them how to make their own decisions instead of having them made by others for the rest of their lives,” noted the Kajang native.

For more than two decades, Kong has also been tirelessly raising funds to keep the centre afloat. But she has never been one to rest on her laurels. This year, she is bracing for one final stretch before slowly moving on to retirement.

“My final dream is for all of them to be able to move into their very own campus,” she says.

“People go to universities and schools with their own campus, so why not these children too?”

That’s her plan but, she admits, “whether I’ll be here long enough or not, I don’t know.”

The centre is now raising funds to construct a building on a piece of land in Kajang that was purchased in 2008. But only half of the amount required has been raised so far.

Asked if there is anything she has not achieved, Kong said some of the parents are past 80 but have not managed to get an assurance that their child will be in good hands when they are no longer able to care for them.

“That’s one thing I feel I didn’t work hard enough for,” she said.

“Another thing I failed at is getting parents more involved in the association.”

But Kong is far from giving up, and although she plans to retire soon, she knows that the children’s unconditional love will keep her coming back.

“People like me stay because we feel appreciated. It’s because the children love the teachers and me unconditionally,” she says.

Rubbish build-up a potential threat to environment

A NEW landfill for bulk waste, run by the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) near Sungai Semenyih, is fast turning into an illegal dumpsite for domestic and industrial wastes.

Despite the “Tapak Pelupusan Sampah Pukal” sign in the area declaring it a disposal site for bulk waste, StarMetro’s investigation revealed that the site had become a convenient spot for waste contractors to dump all types of garbage.

Located on a hill about 400m from Sungai Semenyih, the landfill was opened by MPKj several months ago to replace a former landfill that was located near Sungai Kundor.

Sungai Kundor is a tributary of Sungai Semenyih.

The new landfill, located on a 16.19ha land, has a lifespan of 20 years.

StarMetro noticed numerous lorries, loaded with rubbish, making their way to the dumpsite but no MPKj enforcement officers were there to inspect or stop waste contractors from dumping their load.

An average of 20 trucks were seen moving in and out of the site every half an hour. The site is also opened during the weekends.

Further checks revealed that the area was filled with both domestic and industrial wastes including construction materials.

A pond filled with water, believed to be leachate released from the rubbish, was also spotted at the dumpsite.

Residents are pointing fingers at MPKj for failing to ensure that only bulk waste is dumped at the location.

They also question the council’s decision to operate a landfill close to Sungai Semenyih, which has become the subject of controversy in repeated incidents of water contamination caused by illegal dumping of industrial waste there.

Sixty-year-old villager Zulkifli Abdullah from Kampung Sungai Lalang said the residents there were unhappy over the council’s move to operate a new landfill in the area.

The former MPKj bulk waste site in Semenyih still has rubbish scattered everywhere despite it being closed down. There is also foul smell at the site where this dumpsite operated since 2012 and was closed down early this year.

MPKj, he said, had failed to take into consideration the need to preserve the greenery around the river.

“MPKj should do everything possible to stop any form of activities that can lead to pollution of the river, but it is sad that the council itself is operating a dumpsite in the area,” he said.

Halimah Tarmizi, 56, from Kampung Pasir, said it was clear the council was only interested in making money out of the landfill.

She said the residents had earlier expressed dissatisfaction over the operations of the former dumpsite which had been closed after the new one was opened.

“It used to produce strong stench and attract flies because the council allowed contractors to dump all types of garbage in the area,” she said.

StarMetro’s visit to the former dumpsite revealed that the area, although had been excavated, released a foul smell believed to be caused by gas released from the waste buried there.

Global Environment Centre (GCE) river care coordinator Dr Kalithasan Kailasam, who visited the current site following a public tip-off, said it was shocking to find domestic and industrial wastes at the dumpsite.

He said the signboard clearly stated that the spot was meant for dumping of bulk waste but it seemed that the council had violated its own rules and regulation.

“I do not understand how this is happening at a site operated by the local authority, and it seems that there is no control over what should be allowed for disposal at the site,” said the river expert.

Dr Kalithasan feared that the landfill might cause contamination of Sungai Semenyih due to presence of domestic and industrial wastes.

“Furthermore, the landfill is situated on a hill and the river is on the slope,” he said.

Dr Kalithasan said leachate could enter the river or flow into it following a downpour.

An average of 20 lorries going in and out of the site every half an hour.

“This is definitely not a healthy situation and I wonder if an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report had been obtained by the operator.

“It is important for the operator to comply with the various environmental regulations as stipulated by the Department of Environment (DOE),” he said.

MPKj president Mohd Sayuthi Bakar said the council had not done anything wrong by operating the landfill as it was strictly for disposal of construction waste.

“We do not allow the disposal of domestic or industrial waste here,” he said, adding that the council had adhered to various environmental regulations.

A Selangor DOE officer, who wished to remain anonymous, said the council had not obtained any EIA report for the landfill.

“The landfill is not on our list and I believe it is under the purview of the local authority,” he said.

BOTH the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) and the Hulu Langat Land Office plan to provide same deadlines to illegal factory operators operating on the Sungai Semenyih reserve land to move out.

MPKj president Mohd Sayuthi Bakar said the move was to enable enforcement units to take action at the same time.

He added that the land office had issued the notices to move out under different laws, namely the Street, Drainage and Building Act and the State Land Code, respectively.

“We need to coordinate the deadlines of the notices as we can only take action at the expiry of the deadline,” he said, adding that a meeting would be held today with the land office.

He, however, did not mention the original deadlines given to the operators and declined to commit to an expected date on the demolition of the factories.

Mohd Sayuthi said this when asked for updates on the five premises facing demolition orders for operating along the Sungai Semenyih reserve land.

“There is a possibility that one factory has moved out from the river reserve.

“But action will be taken if its new location is not in an industrial zone, including taking the operator to court,” he said at the MPKj full board meeting yesterday.

It was reported that the five premises, including a chicken processing plant, an electrical recycling items workshop and a furniture factory, were among the 58 factories found to be operating along Sungai Semenyih.

This follows the closure of an illegal factory that was said to be the cause of the water contamination in the Klang Valley early last month.

The water treatment plant near Sungai Semenyih had to be shut down, resulting in some 30,000 households to be without water.

On another matter, Mohd Sayuthi said the council had stepped up its preparation for possible natural disasters in view of the monsoon season.

“We have mobilised the Slope Unit to monitor slopes in high-risk areas and take note of any possible problems.

“Should something be detected, such as soil movement, the council will take immediate action before anything untoward happens.

“Our Pasukan Pantas (Quick Action Team) has also been activated and is on standby.

“They will be deployed to assist in emergency cases such as flood, landslide or if trees collapse,” he said.

Mohd Sayuthi also announced that the state government had allocated RM50,000 to instal CCTVs in low-cost flat schemes.

“We are in the process of shortlisting several flat schemes that are qualified for the project.

“They need to fulfil two criteria – the Joint Management Body or Joint Management Committee (JMB or JMC) has to be active, and there has to be an office or room where the CCTV equipment can be installed.

“As the allocation is limited, we will likely be able to instal the CCTVs in three locations only,” he said, adding that the CCTVs would be used for safety purposes to monitor vehicle and pedestrian access.

MPKj Planning Department director Datuk Nizam Sahari also presented updates on the Publicity and Public Participation Programme for the MPKj Draft Local Plan (Amendment 4) or MPKj Draft RT (Amendment 4).

“The duration was originally scheduled from Sept 27 to Oct 26. The state government had agreed to the council’s request to extend the publicity programme by an additional month (ending Nov 25) due to amendments to two Federal Government projects,” he said.

Sungai Semenyih constantly under threat

INDUSTRIES and unscrupulous individuals are taking advantage of the lack of enforcement along Sungai Semenyih to pollute the river, including discharging effluent into the water.

Despite a series of recent incidents of water contamination at Sungai Semenyih which resulted in the shutting down of the water treatment plant affecting millions of households in Selangor, a StarMetro team’s recent visit to the area revealed that the river continued to be the target of polluters.

They also were illegally extracting water from the river.

Besides that, the check also revealed that contractors have found the riverbank along Jalan Sungai Lalang as an easy target to conduct illegal dumping.

Global Environment Centre (GCE) river care coordinator Dr Kalithasan Kailasam, who was present with the team, expressed disbelief with what was uncovered during the check.

He said it was strange to find a factory openly discharging waste water from its premises into Sungai Semenyih located just across the road.

“The factory is channelling its waste into the drain outside its premises via a pipeline that goes to the river beneath the surface of the road,” said the river expert, puzzled that such an action had escaped the authorities.

Dr Kalithasan said he was unsure if the factory had the approval of the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) to do so.

He said his observation revealed that the factory was manufacturing chemical products and it was unwise for it to be allowed to channel waste water into the river.

“I think it is not a good idea to allow the effluent to be released into the river without being properly treated,” he said

Besides that, Dr Kalithasan was also shocked to find out that the same factory was extracting water from the river for its use.

According to his finding, he said, the factory had set up a small pump house inside a wooden structure nearby to extract the river water.

“Besides the wooden structure, we also found a well believed to be used to store the extracted river water,” he said, calling for action to be taken against the operator.

Further checks around the area also revealed that garbage had been illegally dumped along the riverbank facing the industrial zone.

At most spots, Dr Kalithasan said the garbage was dumped about five meters from the river.

He said both industrial and domestic wastes were illegally dumped which could contaminate the river.

“This should not be allowed to happen as the rubbish from the riverbank will be washed into the river whenever it rains,” he said.

Dr Kalithasan, who visited the site for the first time, was disappointed with the condition of the Sungai Semenyih along the Jalan Sungai Lalang stretch.

He said, the authorities were not doing enough to protect the river from pollution.

“My findings revealed that the river is under huge threat especially from the industries that are operating too close to the riverbank,” he said

He added that the council, Department of Environment (DOE), Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS), Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) and other relevant agencies must get their act together if they were serious in their move to prevent the river from being polluted.

Unscrupulous individuals have thrown rubbish right next to Sungai Semenyih.

“Currently, the situation is unsatisfactory and we should act before it leads to another water contamination incident,” he said, adding that it also caused the government a lot of money on water treatment.

When contacted, Selangor environment committee chairman Elizabeth Wong said it was an offence to extract raw water from the river without the approval of the authorities.

She added that LUAS was responsible to give approval for extracting water from the river.

“However, those who are allowed to extract water from the river will be charged for the usage of the water based on the industries they are involved in,” she said, adding that the rubber industry used river water.

Wong added that factories were not allowed to discharge effluent to the river unless they had the prior approval of the DOE.

Under DOE regulation, she said, the effluent must be treated by the factory’s own treatment plant before they were channelled to the river.

“Any business which produces effluent above the set parameters must have its own treatment facilities within its own compound,” she said, adding that it must be done within set parameters outlined under the schedule of the Environment Quality Act 1974.

Wong also said that the views of MPKj would be taken into consideration before such approvals are granted to the factories.

“The local authorities and the relevant agencies will sit on a panel that grants such approvals,” she said.

A FURNITURE factory is among five premises facing demolition orders for operating on river reserve land along Sungai Semenyih.

The other four premises are a chicken processing plant, an electrical recycling items workshop, a warehouse for heavy machinery and a brick factory.

State Local Government Committee chairman Ean Yong Hian Wah said despite recent notices issued by Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj), the operators of the illegal factories had failed to shut down operations.

He added that four of the factories were occupying the state land while the warehouse was on private land.

He also said that even though the warehouse was on private land, it was still an offence to operate a business in the river reserve.

Ean Yong did not reveal when the demolition exercise would take place, adding that the five were among the 58 factories found to be operating along Sungai Semenyih.

Ean Yong said MPKj had conducted a survey to check on the activities along the river and identified the businesses operating in industrial and non-industrial zones.

“Thirty-one premises were found to be operating without licences and 49 compound notices were issued for various offences including operating on agricultural land,” he told reporters after attending a briefing by MPKj yesterday.

He said 27 of the factories would be taken to court for further action as the council was seeking a court order to shut down the illegal businesses.

He explained legal action was necessary because the operators had failed to adhere to the council’s notices.

“MPKj’s action against the illegal operators shows that it is serious in its efforts to close down illegal factories operating along Sungai Semenyih,” he said.

On Nov 7, StarMetro reported that its check revealed more than 50 factories were operating along Sungai Semenyih, posing a threat to the river.

Getaway crash: Police officers inspecting the Proton Persona abandoned by the robbers as they fled from the authorities.

BANGI: The mere sight of a police car sent a gang of robbers fleeing, thwarting their plan to rob an employer of RM185,000.

The 62-year-old owner of a cleaning service company made a withdrawal at a bank in Section 15, Bandar Baru Bangi yesterday to pay her employees their salary.

Little did she know that the would-be robbers were following her from the bank, waiting for the right moment to relieve her of her cash.

Luckily, a police patrol unit making its rounds spotted the men tailing the victim in three cars.

“Before we were able to do anything, the suspects jumped into one car and fled, but were unable to take the money from their potential victim,” according to Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Othman Nanyan.

In their panic, they abandoned their other vehicles at the scene.

“We believe that there were at least five suspects,” he said.

“The two vehicles abandoned by the suspects were a gold Toyota Hilux that was reported lost in Kajang and a silver Proton Persona that was reported lost in Seremban.”

ACP Othman said police had launched a manhunt for the suspects, and that the woman later went to a police station at about 10.35am to lodge a report.

ACP Othman said the case was being investigated under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery.

Mentally-challenged man stabs neighbour following quarrel

PETALING JAYA: The police had to taser a mentally-challenged man in Kajang after he allegedly stabbed a neighbour in the chest following a quarrel.

During the 4.36am incident at Taman Cheras Jaya on Saturday, the neighbour was having a conversation with his brother when the man suddenly joined in.

Immediately, both the neighbour and the man started quarrelling.

That was when the man suddenly took out a knife and stabbed the neighbour, 31, in the chest.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Othman Nanyan said after the attack, the 34-year-old suspect fled while the neighbour’s brother quickly tended to his wounds.

The neighbour, who was rushed to the hospital, survived the attack and is currently in stable condition.

“Initial investigation showed that the man has a history of creating problems in the neighbourhood and he suffers from some mental health issues. There have been police reports lodged against him,” said ACP Othman.

After investigations, police then went to the suspect’s home at about 4pm and was met by family members.

He said after some discussions, the suspect’s family managed to persuade the man to turn himself in but he suddenly turned aggressive, forcing the police to taser him.

He was later brought to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for treatment.

ACP Othman said according to his family, the suspect had not been treated for his mental health issues.

Veteran journalist dies at 59

PETALING JAYA: Former theSun journalist Aloysius Francis (pix) passed away today at the age of 59.

Aloysius had suffered a heart attack during Sunday mass at the Assumption Church here and was taken to the Assunta Hospital nearby.

He was admitted to the intensive care unit, but died shortly after.

He leaves wife Ann Khaw, and children Joseph, 15, Marie Claire, 14, and Ignatius, eight.

Aloysius, was a school teacher in Terengganu and a state cricketer before moving to journalism. He was a reporter for the New Straits Times in the 1980s before joining the Sports Desk at theSun.

He had also worked at The Star and Malay Mail as a sub-editor.

The wake will be held at the family home in Kajang, with the funeral service on Wednesday at the Holy Family Church in Kajang at 2pm.

Beliau berkata demikian dalam majlis konvokesyen meraikan kejayaan 35 perantis Kolej Vokasional Kajang menerima Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia Tahap 3 Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK) dan sijil IPC-SLDN daripada MAI di Menara MITI, Kuala Lumpur, baru-baru ini.

Yang turut hadir, Pengarah SLDN JPK, Mohamad Yaakob dan Pengajar SLDN Kolej Vokasional Kajang, Azmie Arshad.

Bagi Azmie, program SLDN ini bertuah kerana memperoleh Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia Tahap 3 pada usia yang relatif muda berbanding pelajar di institusi lain.

“Malah, pelajar SLDN juga mendapat pengalaman berurusan secara langsung dengan pelanggan dan ilmu teknologi terkini di industri,” katanya.

MKH and PR1MA to Develop RM464 Million Mixed Development Project in Kajang

A new mixed development project in Kajang with a GDV of RM464 million will be jointly-developed by MKH Bhd and PR1MA Corp Bhd.

Metro KL City Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of PR1MA, will be developing stratified residential and commercial projects in PR1MA’s 8.22-acre freehold land over the period of four years.

Metro KL will have a 70% share of profit and cost and will be making an initial capital investment of RM38 million for the start-up and preliminary works. This fund will be gathered via internally generated funds, bank borrowings or both.

According to MKH, the project will be completed within 36 months after a joint agreement is signed between Metro KL and the statutory body on Monday. However, Metro KL is required to submit a bank guarantee of RM18 million to PR1MA within the first six months.

Ketua Polis Daerah Kajang, Asisten Komisioner Othman Nanyan, berkata berdasarkan saksi, mangsa dikejar tiga lelaki dipercayai warga Afrika sebelum menetak mangsa.

Menurutnya, siasatan polis di lokasi kejadian menemui tiga parang dipercayai digunakan suspek dalam kejadian itu.

"Siasatan selanjutnya polis menemui kesan darah. Ada dua kesan cap jari pada parang dan jumpa Hyundai Elantra merah dipercayai milik mangsa diletakkan kira-kira 100 meter dari lokasi.

"Sehingga ini, kami masih belum dapat mengenal pasti identiti mangsa berikutan tidak menemui sebarang dokumen pengenalan diri milik di tubuhnya," katanya dalam satu kenyataan hari ini.

Berikutan itu, katanya, skuad Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah (JSJ) Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah (IPD) Kajang dibantu anggota D9 Ibu Pejabat Polis Kontinjen (IPK) Selangor menahan empat lelaki warga Nigeria di Kajang.

Beliau berkata, keempat-empatnya ditahan pada kira-kira 11 malam.

Susulan itu, katanya, satu lagi tangkapan dilakukan ke atas seorang lelaki warga Nigeria di tepi Jalan Taman Anggerik Villa, Kajang, pada 12.30 tengah malam.

"Semua lelaki berusia lingkungan 20 hingga 28 terbabit ditahan bagi membantu siasatan," katanya.

KAJANG – Penduduk sekitar Taman Putra Kajang dan Taman Kajang Mewah tertanya-tanya mengapa projek pembinaan lampu isyarat yang dalam proses pembinaan di Jalan Wan Siew di sini terhenti tiba-tiba sejak beberapa minggu lalu.

Penduduk, Hazdi Khalid, 40, berkata, kemudahan itu dimohon berikutan keadaan simpang tiga yang terlalu sibuk ditambah laluan terlalu gelap pada waktu malam.

Menurutnya, penduduk lega apabila kemudahan lampu isyarat mula dibina beberapa bulan lalu di antara Kajang Mewah dan Sungai Chua.

Bagaimanapun, penduduk dan pengguna kecewa apabila projek terbabit terhenti dan seolah-olah terbengkalai tanpa diketahui sebabnya.

“Kami tak tahu siapa yang bina lampu isyarat ni, banyak kemalangan berlaku di sini termasuk ada kenderaan yang ‘panjat’ pembahagi jalan disebabkan tiada papan tanda isyarat keselamatan disediakan pihak berkenaan.

“Keadaan ini membahayakan pengguna, jika langkah segera tak diambil, berkemungkinan boleh mengakibatkan kemalangan dan kehilangan nyawa,” katanya.

Timbalan Ketua Umno Bahagian Serdang, Mejar (B) Abdul Rahim Mohd Amin berkata, persimpangan di bawah pentadbiran Majlis Perbandaran Kajang (MPKj) itu terlalu gelap pada waktu malam.

Katanya, pihak berkenaan digesa menyiapkan kemudahan itu bagi keselesaan pengguna.

“Pihak berkenaan kena ambil tahu mengapa projek itu terhenti tiba-tiba, kemudahan ini amat diperlukan penduduk,” katanya.

Enforcement officers from three agencies have started a joint operations to check on some 120 factories operating along Sungai Semenyih.

This follows the closure and sealing off the illegal factory that was identified as the culprit behind the water disruptions in the Klang Valley.

It was jointly conducted by the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj), Hulu Langat Land Office and Department of Environment (DOE).

According to MPKj, during today's (Oct 6) operations, MPKj confiscated goods and sealed off the premises of another factory found to be operating illegally.

The team inspected eight premises, four of which had their licences revoked for flouting trade licensing, waste disposal and town planning bylaws.

MPKj added that the land the factory was located on was designated as agriculture, so non-related activities without proper application were considered illegal.

“The operator had been operating without a licence and was found guilty of flouting the Trade Licensing, Business and Industry (MPKj) 2007 Bylaw,” said Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) public relations head Kamarul Izlan Sulaiman.

“We issued a notice for the operator to stop all their activities and for them to submit a report on their effluent disposal method within three days.

“Failure to do so would result in a fine of not more than RM500 or jail of not more than six months, or both.”

It was reported that the illegal factory located along Jalan Sungai Lalang, which had been masking as a building materials operations, was in fact recycling engine oil and repackaging them to be sold.

During a visit by The Star yesterday (Oct 6), workers from Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd were seen cleaning up the site while officers from Selangor Waters Management Authority (LUAS) were coordinating the clean-up and enforcement works there.

“We started cleaning and disposal works on Tuesday. Because of the large amount of waste stacked around the site and in the soil, we will need about a week to clear everything,’ said Kualiti Alam Scheduled Waste Action Team consultant Datuk A. Mariasoosay.

“Items found included used engine oil, containers of sodium sulphate and a few types of other chemicals.”

As of yesterday (Oct 6) afternoon, the company’s 20-tonne trucks made 16 trips to dispose the hazardous waste at its waste management centre.

Meanwhile, Air Selangor Group said that the scheduled recovery plan of water supply to consumers is progressing well, following the closure of the Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant due to raw water odour pollution.

“The plan put into effect since Wednesday (Oct 5) is an effective measure to ensure that consumers do not experience water supply interruption for extended periods,” said said Air Selangor Group corporate communications head Amin Lin Abdullah.

“It is only a temporary measure until water supply is fully restored in affected areas,”

“The plan is also being monitored by the National Water Services Commission to ensure the inconvenience to consumers in affected areas is resolved as soon as possible.”

The schedule is being reviewed and updated until water supply is restored in Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat, Sepang and Petaling Districts.

The plan, which takes place until Oct 11, will have affected areas divided into two zones.

Water will be supplied to zones that are scheduled to receive water supply at 4pm, then disconnected two days later at 9am.

KUALA LUMPUR: A video of a security guard being assaulted by a driver in Kajang has been making the rounds on social media since yesterday.

It shows the guard being repeatedly punched in the face by an irate driver when the guard was perceived as being slow in lifting a boom at the entrance of a residential area in Sungai Long Seksyen 7 on Sunday.

The assailant was driving a silver-coloured Perodua Myvi in the incident that was captured on CCTV.

The video was shared on the Metafora Anafora Facebook page and garnered some 11,000 shares and 2,000 comments on Facebook.

The guard, known only as Murugan, 34, lost a tooth and sustained a swollen left eye as a result of the beating.

In the video, Murugan was seen allowing a car in front of the Myvi to enter the residential area. The Myvi driver lost his cool and rammed into the boom.

When Murugan confronted the driver for his actions, the driver grabbed him by the collar and punched him repeatedly in the face.

Murugan lodged a police report on the same day.

When contacted by theSun, Kajang district police chief ACP Othman Nayan confirmed that the case was being investigated but declined to comment further.

It is understood that Murugan had been working as a guard in the residential area for three months, and had not seen the driver before the incident.

Starting next year all-day eateries in Kajang will have to close at least for two hours for cleaning

FROM Jan 1 next year, all 24-hour eateries within the jurisdiction of the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) will have to close for a minimum of two hours to allow the premises to be cleaned up.

Council president Mohd Sayuthi Bakar said the operators could choose from three time slots — 2am-4am, 3am-5am, or 4am-6am.

There are about 500 such eateries in the municipality.

“We chose to enforce this as we are concerned about cleanliness.

In line with the Selangor state government’s “no polystyrene” ruling beginning next year, the council is not only following suit but also starting it early with council-operated eateries and businesses such as food courts and pasar malam vendors adhering to it from Nov 1.“This does not include 24-hour fast food outlets because they have their own standard operating procedure,” he said.

“There will be no incentive for the food operators because the alternative (eco-friendly packaging) is not burdensome to them,” he said.

Meanwhile, the council has ordered an illegal tyre factory in the Sungai Lalang industrial area in Semenyih to cease operations immediately.

“The effluent was channelled to the river.

“We had sealed the factory and the Department Of Environment will take further action against the wrongdoers,” he said.

Speaking on the council’s 2017 budget, Mohd Sayuthi said, “It is another deficit budget.”

With the estimated expenditure at RM207,247, 972 (of which RM137,349,972 is for management expenses and RM69,898,000 for development purposes) and revenue at RM199,846,972, the council has a deficit of RM74,010,000.

“We use the council’s savings to cover the deficit but in the long run, it is not healthy because eventually the savings will run out.

“We can only be prudent with our usage but there are some areas that we can’t compromise such as waste collection and public cleaning,” he said.

He added that compound notices were not considered a method to increase revenue.

“We do not factor in compound notices as that would be akin to expecting people to flout the law. Our hope is for people to abide by the law,” he said.

When asked if there were plans to increase the assessment tax, he said the council plans to do so as the last increase was in 1985, when the council should review the assessment every five years.

“We have the lowest assessment rates. We also have to find a way to improve our delivery of services and yet reduce cost,” he said.

IT doesn’t take rocket science to make satay – thread little pieces of marinated meat onto bamboo skewers and grill them over a fire. Yet not everyone gets satay right. Not everyone can make satay as good as they do it in Selangor’s satay town of Kajang.

In Kajang, throw a stone and you are likely to hit a tukang satay. Perhaps it is the keen competition that keeps them sharp and spiffy.

According to locals, satay was brought to Kajang by West Javanese near the end of World War I. In 1917, migrants Tasmin Sakiban and Mohd Noor Darmon started the first satay stall in town. Before them, itinerant satay vendors carried two low tables hung over a yoke on their shoulders. One table held a charcoal stove while the other, a pot of satay sauce. Back then, customers dipped their satay into a common bowl of sauce. Individual bowls of sauce were introduced years later.

Not much is known about Mohd Noor and Tasmin’s first joint venture, though it did spawn the birth of one of Selangor’s most successful satay franchises in 1992. Tasmin’s wife was the aunt of one Datuk Haji Samuri Juraimi, the founder of Sate Kajang Haji Samuri.

Today, there are over 20 Sate Kajang Haji Samuri outlets throughout the Klang Valley – three of them in Kajang. Giving Sate Kajang Haji Samuri a good run for its money are competitors Willy Satay, Satay Station and Nyuk Lan Satay Kajang.

So what makes Selangor’s satay so amazing? Is it the tender and flavourful pieces of perfectly grilled meat or their loyal companion, the peanut sauce?

While the West Javanese prefer lean meat on the skewers, Selangorians love good ol’ chunks of fat when it comes to satay. To them, the fat adds flavour and moistness, so their satay sticks usually have skin and fat wedged in the middle of the meat pieces. They are right, of course – that little piece of fat chars and crisps up, oozing juicy fat that coats the satay with a mist of deliciousness after grilling.

Breast and thigh meat are often used for chicken satay while tenderloin is now a popular choice for beef satay. There are also rabbit, venison, mutton, and duck satay, as well as exotic – but not as popular – offerings such as chicken feet, liver, gizzard, and intestine satay.

Using good meat and the right cut is as important as having a great recipe for the marinade. Every satay master has his own marinade recipe – often found after countless trial and error.

The image of skewers of meat grilling over an open charcoal fire is often associated with satay. The open-flame grilling gives satay its desirable characteristics: smoky with slightly bitter, charred bits to complement the sweet and spicy marinade.

The small cuts of meat are best grilled for seven to eight minutes over a charcoal fire, turned three to four times in the process. At each turn, the meat gets a brushing of the marinade. Sometimes, honey or more sugar is added to the original marinade to give the end product a good char and glaze.

Equally important is the satay sauce. Satay masters may use the same ingredients – peanuts, chilli, shallots, turmeric and so on – in their recipes, but it is their respective “air buah tangan” (their unique touches) that make all the difference.

Many satay outlets in Selangor serve chunky peanut sauce to go with the satay, though there are some who prefer a smooth, creamy sauce. A dollop of sambal is added for customers who want it spicier. There’s where Kajang satay masters make a difference for themselves too – the sambal is served in a separate bowl for you to customise the level of heat in your peanut sauce.

To make satay a meal in itself, there are cuts of compressed rice – nasi impit, cucumber and onion, served on the side.

Archbishop gave ok to demolish St Joseph’s Chapel

Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur says the chapel in Kajang has not been in use since the 1980s after estate workers moved out.

PETALING JAYA: The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur has given the Kajang Municipal Council the green light to demolish the remains of St Joseph’s Chapel in Brehma Estate, Kajang.

According to a statement by Clarence Dass, ecclesiastical assistant to Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur Julian Leow, the decision was made after much discussion with church leaders and the authorities.

It took into account the fact that the chapel has not been in use since the 1980s.

“The chapel along Jalan Saujana was originally built in Brehma Estate to cater to the needs of the Catholic estate workers there.

“Following the estate’s closure and the massive developments that have taken place since then, the chapel has no longer been in use since,” Clarence explained.

“The remains are now deemed to be an illegal structure on a road reserve.”

Leow urged the Catholic community in Kajang to give the council their fullest cooperation.

Leow also addressed reports of people attempting to prevent the demolition work and stressed that the decision to demolish the chapel was made after due process was followed.

FEARFUL residents living at the foothills of a rapidly developing hillslope project in Taman Ferngrove Cheras are demanding a stop-work order pending further investigations.

Residents from Taman Cuepacs Phase One claim the hillslope has a gradient of more than 45°, making it a Class C slope that is banned for development by the state government.

Unfortunately, the eight bungalow lots being developed had already been approved, much to the dismay of the residents who have been trying unsuccessfully to get more information on the project.

Residents recently held a protest to voice their displeasure and demand a stop-work order for the time being.

Taman Cuepacs Phase One Residents’ Association chairman Joan Francis said they had been asking for Environmental Assessment Impact (EIA) reports as well as confirmation of the hill’s gradient but to no avail.

They have met with the developer’s representative three times, the first on June 22 and the most recent just two weeks ago but the representative could not answer any of their queries.

“They keep pushing us to the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) but the Building Control department said it could not release the documents,” she said.

Fellow resident and former Petaling Jaya MP Kua Kia Soong said the state and MPKJ should intervene since they had long advocated the Local Government Act 1976.

“This development is against the blanket ban in 2009 by the then Mentri Besar of Selangor on all hillsides above 25° gradient,” he said.

He also said the federal and state governments assert that the local community must be informed of such developments and that necessary reports be conducted before any development should take place.

Despite their efforts, the developers started clearing the plots of land a month ago to begin building four bungalows.

RA assistant secretary Michael Lau said the signboard to notify the residents of the development was only put up after that but it lacked information on the approval and the developer’s licence number.

More worrying for them was a recent flood that affected the entire neighbourhood following the land clearing.

“The floods were caused by run off from the excessive cutting of trees and our monsoon drains at the corner of Jalan Koop Cuepacs 1 and Jalan Koop Cuepacs 2 are clogged up with dead branches and leaves,” Lau added.

The drains have also been eroding, increasing their fears especially since the development’s boundary markers are located less than a few meters from the drains.

Residents have asked the council to fix the drains for awhile now but nothing has been done so far.

The soil from the clearing works appear to be inching down and a downpour could trigger a landslip if not attended soon.

Residents are also worried that they will lose their green lung especially since it is home to a number of exotic animals.

Kua, who is also an avid birdwatcher, said he had spotted a Buffy Fish Owl previously, and the place was also home to three different types of monkeys including the Dusky Leaf Monkeys, Long tail Macaques and the Silver Leaf monkeys.

For now, the residents say they are not against the development but are looking for a win-win situation to ensure their safety as well as preservation of the green lung as well.

Present at the protest was Kajang councillor Young Syefura Othman, who confirmed that the relevant approvals had already been given.

When asked if the council should hold a public objection period for the development, Syefura said the she had checked with the relevant departments and was told it was not required.

“Based on the local plan, it is not required and according to the department, the developer has already conducted a geotechnical survey on the land parcel already,” she added.

Syefura, however, said she would forward the residents’ objections to the council and would organise a meeting between MPKJ, the residents and the developer.

SEPANG: Hardly 11 months after being released from prison for commercial vehicle theft conviction, a 46-year-old local slipped back into his old habit - this time heading a gang to steal more vehicles.

Sepang district police chief ACP Abdul Aziz Ali said the suspect, now the mastermind of "Gang Mega Kajang" which has 11 members including a woman, a Thai national, are onto stealing excavators at construction sites in Klang Valley.

Following a tip-off, he added, the suspects, aged between 31 and 45 were arrested at various locations in Kajang, Puchong, Dengkil and Rompin in Pahang on Aug 11.

"The members of the gang act on the leader's instruction. The modus operandi is one gang member will apprehend the security guard at the site while the others execute the theft," he said in a press conference at Kuala Lumpur International Airport police station here today.

Police recovered two excavators, three lorries, two cheques worth RM17,000 and three vehicles worth RM350,000 following the arrest of the gang members.

Abdul Aziz said the group which has been active recently is believed to have one more suspect, a Pakistani,who is still at large.

It is learnt that some of the stolen lorries and excavators were sold at below market price with forged vehicle grants.

The suspects have been remanded until Aug 27 under Section 395 and 397 of the Penal Code for gang and armed robbery.

PETALING JAYA: MCA has taken Kajang assemblyman Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to task for her silence in the demolition of the remains of the disused St Joseph's Church in Kajang.

MCA religious harmony bureau deputy chairman Datuk Ng Chok Sin (pic) said the PKR president failed to inform the residents of the demolition, which was carried out by Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) last Tuesday.

"It must be noted that the residents of Brehma Estate had come out to chase away the MPKj contractors.

"It is obvious from the residents' reaction that the public were unaware of any consent by the church.

"Sufficient notice ought to be given to the public officers in the know like the local state assemblyman," he said in a statement Friday.

He also said it was "perplexing" why MPKj under the Pakatan-led Selangor government conducted the demolition at night.

Ng expressed disappointment with Serdang MP Dr Ong Kian Ming, whom he said had "seized this as an opportunity" to pit the Catholic Church against MCA.

It was earlier reported that Dr Ong had called on Ng to apologise to those affected by his statement on the demolition.

Dr Ong had said that this was because the Catholic Church had previously agreed to the demolition of the church's remaining structure.

But Ng said there should have been an immediate clarification from Dr Wan Azizah or MPKj, and not the Serdang DAP MP to "politicise the issue".

He also suggested that Dr Ong stop trying to drag the church into politics.

"Instead, (he should) press the local authorities in Kajang to be more forthcoming and forthright in the demolition of any structure, rather than clandestinely swing into action only at night," he said.

OKU man among five detained for drug trafficking

KAJANG: A man with disabilities (OKU) was among five people detained by the police on suspicion of being involved in a drug trafficking syndicate.

Kajang district police chief ACP Othman Nanyan said the OKU man, who was wheel-chair bound was arrested with two others, including a woman, during a raid at Seri Mewah Apartment, Taman Seri Mewah here, last Monday.

"When the raid was conducted, the three of them were packing cannabis, believed to be sold in Kajang and Bangsar.

"Following a search, police found cannabis which was packed in aluminum foil and hidden in a bag under a bed in a room at the apartment," he told a media conference here today.

In another raid in Bandar Rinching here, he said police arrested two women and seized 75 transparent plastic packets believed to contain syabu.

KUALA LUMPUR: Three Nigerian men and a local woman were arrested in Kajang on suspicion of involvement in the 'Nigerian Romance Scam' activities which resulted in losses of about RM400,000 early today.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said all the suspects, aged 28 to 32 years, were arrested in two raids at about 4am.

"The arrest of a local woman and a Nigerian man in a house at Taman Orkid, near here led to the arrest of two more Nigerian men in an apartment in Kajang at about 6am," he said in a statement here today.

Acryl Sani said the woman was believed to be impersonating a custom officer or forwarding agent while the male suspect acted as the mastermind by using a false Facebook account to lure victims besides managing the victims' cash deposits in a bank account.

He said also seized in the raids were cash amounting to RM10,000, 12 mobile phones, five ATM cards, three laptops, jewelery and a Perodua MyVi vehicle.

With the arrest, he said police had solved 24 cases in connection to fraudulent activities in several states, including in Melaka, Perak, Selangor and the federal capital.

The case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and with whipping or fine, upon conviction, he said.

KAJANG: Passers-by came to the aid of a GrabCar driver after he was assaulted by two of his “passengers” in a botched robbery at about 1am this Tuesday.

The 27-year-old driver was dropping off the two men at Taman Sri Jelok, Kajang, when they attempted to rob him.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Othman Nanyan said the duo - with 10 previous criminal records between them - had hired the driver to take them from Ampang to Kajang.

“They caused injuries to the driver’s face and head while attempting to rob him. They were nabbed by passers-by and handed over to the police,” he explained

ACP Othman said the driver was warded in Hospital Kajang for injuries to his forehead, right cheek, arm and hand. The two 39-year-old men will be remanded until Aug 15 to facilitate investigations.The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt while committing a robbery.
