When Sport Meets Dirty Egyptian Politics

Egypt demonstrates to us what happens when sport meets politics and gets ugly.

At Port Said on the1st February, a calamity for sport and Egypt- still-in-revolution unfolded to a world that could no longer be shocked by events flooding out of Egypt. A football match-turned violent aftermath will go down in Egyptian and world history. More than a football scuffle or altercation, yesterday's tragic bloodbath at Port Said's stadium took place when sport was very likely infiltrated by politics, ending in death and Egyptian football being suspended for the second time in a year.

At least 75 people were killed after a riot erupted during an Egyptian League football match in Cairo. 200 people were injured after fans chased Al Ahly soccer players after they lost a match to the home team, Al Masry.

The fallout from this football violent spree was even more far-sweeping than a setback for Egypt's revolution. Sport careers have been devestated as have peoples' lives, as the psychological damage may last longer than Egypt's protesting habit. Top player Mohamad Abu-Traykah witnessed a football fan dying, and as a consequence, retired from football. A local mayor or governor for Port Said stepped away from his political calling. The Prime Minister sacked Egypt's FA. Portuguese coach Manuel José quit his post with the Egyptian team Al Ahly. Hussam Ashour collapsed in a fit of despair during a live phone with al Ahly TV station.

Sport injuries shrouded in Conspiracy

Questions and angles of enquiry include, in typical Arab tradition, conspiracy theories.

Much of these conspiracies theories tie into Tahrir. Others, suggest foreign meddling.

Not the expected sport injuries to result from a game of football: Several players were badly injured when the violence broke out after their game. Goal-keeper for Al-Ahly, Sherif Ekramy was gravely wounded.

People Versus Police again:

Ineffective policing? Crowd control was especially weak. And that was without the runnaway officers who fled the battle-scene. Other footballl games were cited in support of such criticism voiced loudly, that had been far-better policed pre-revolution times.

Massive criticism was being levelled at Egyt's security and police once again. This incident was cited as an anomoly for Egyptian league surveillance that was usually so safe-guarded as to ensure any attempted bootlegging of unauthorised water 'bottles' got stopped. Police in Egyptian football matches are notoriously vigilant for smuggled water entering the stadium! At a time when Egypt was expected to be vigilant in every sense while the country is still pregnant with change to follow, top security would be expected in any public crowd situation. Comparisons were made to regular games that were better policed.

While football had been known to be aggravating the politics of the revolution as Tahrir events involved participation from the fanatic fanclub 'groupies' associated with Egypt's football league, known as Ultras, this degree of violence after a game has shocked local and international spectators. The fans cornered supporters on the field in the city of Port Said and around the stadium, throwing stones and bottles at them. While fans were left vulnerable to the vigilante antics that involved stoning, kniving, trampling and burning, security forces were to be found at Mubarak's bed side, securing the reviled leader, but not the country's people. Potlicians were still getting more VIP treatment than the population. It's like "Bend it Like Mubarak" screamed Al Jazeera!

The trouble has spilled out of Tahrir and into football stadiums, causing yet another postponement of the nation's football leagues.

Protests have already ensued as a result of these latest events to unsettle unstable Egypt.

Poeple are now speaking of a semi-civil war being speared by the 'Ultras' (Egypt's unique fanclub landscape).

Who instigated this hooliganism and violence? The details remain in the arena of speculation and conspiracy, as Egypt launches its investigation. The victor team Al Masry (beating Al Ahli 3-1) is accused of aggravating the sporting crowd spirit with provocative revolutionary propoganda.

Some say that the whole tragedy was due to Al Ahly 'Ultras' participation in the revolution previously at Tahrir.

Still, embroiling sport with politics is not a new tradtion for the Middle East.

Lebanon heavily appropriates sport into its heated sectarian politics. World sport no less, in the absence of its own high profile teams. In football, for one thing, if you support Germany, well you're obviously with Harriri. If Brazil, then Aoun. Or something like that.

This Football legend, was born into a Football family of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Ronaldo de Assis Moreira, better known as Ronaldinho was greatly influenced by his father Joao who played for Cruzeiro. Also his elder brother Roberto who is now his manager was a player for Gremio. The young Ronaldinho found more enjoyment in futsal and beach football before graduating to playing the standard game.

The Favela and Gremio

Ronaldinho started his life in a wooden house in the heart of a favela. His father, Joao da Silva Moreira who played for an amateur club made the needs of home meet by working as a car park attendant at Gremio Football Club. His brother Roberto was a great hope for the club but his career was unfortunately ended by a terrible knee injury.
At the age of 8, tragedy struck as Ronaldinho's father drowned in a swimming pool at a villa provided by Gremio for Roberto. Following the footsteps of his brother Ronnie he joined the Gremio's football school and wowed everyone there. He made it into the first team in 1997 and was being heralded as one of the best young hopes in Brazilian football. Meanwhile, he was already making the breakthrough with the national squad, and his six goals were fundamental in Brazil's Copa America triumph in 1999. The goal Ronaldinho scored against Venezuela is remembered to this day as one of the most spectacular ever scored by a player wearing the famous Brazilian jersey.

In France

In 2001, Ronaldinho moved on to PSG where he became a football star with his tremendous flair and exciting style of football - contributing to the team’s success with a number of goals. However, his employer was still not too convinced with his attitude, especially outside the field, and looked to get rid of him. But Ronaldinho continued to shine in the international arena. His finest hour came at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea, where he was a key member of the side that won Brazil's record fifth world title - scoring in the quarter finals and playing an integral role in midfield in the final.
Ronaldinho then moved to Barcelona, arguably one of the biggest clubs in the world, for what now seems a bargain at $40M.

In Barcelona

In his first season at Barcelona Ronaldinho more than justified his price tag as he helped coax the Catalan giants into second place in La Liga and earned himself the title of 2004 World Player of the Year. Ronaldinho helped Barcelona to win back to back La Liga titles in 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 along with the European Champion's League in 2006, Ronaldinho has also won a host of personal awards including- Having caught the eye of big spending Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, Ronaldinho was the subject of a failed £60m bid from the West London club and despite the resignation of his friend Sandor Rosell as Barcelona's vice president of sports, he signed a new contract in late 2005 with the Catalan club.

FIFA World Player

Ronaldinho is the third Brazilian to win the European Footballer of the Year Award. On December 19, 2005, he was again named FIFA World Player of the Year with 956 points, more than three times the 306 points of Chelsea's Frank Lampard and 190 points of Barça teammate Samuel Eto'o. He was chosen for the UEFA team of year 2005 for the third time running in January 2006. He received more votes than any other player in that team. Over 1.5 million people participated in the voting.

Ronaldinho, on March 7, 2006 in the 2nd leg of the Champions League at Camp Nou, scored a spectacular goal against Chelsea. He received the ball from Eto'o outside the box, dribbled past three defenders and edged past a fourth player, and hit the ball hard and low past goalkeeper Petr Cech. The next day, in the press conference, Ronaldinho expressed his happiness with Barcelona and bashed speculations for a possible transfer to Chelsea: "I'm very happy with Barça. I can't imagine being happier anywhere else but with Barça. There isn't enough money to buy my happiness. I see myself being here the rest of my life and I hope to keep on bringing joy to the Barça fans". Ronaldinho is considered the world's most coveted player in 2006, and a possible future transfer fee for him would probably top 50 million euros. In December 2005, he and Mauricio de Sousa, a famous Brazilian comic book author, announced the creation of a comic character based upon Ronaldinho, his brother and his mother. Ronaldinho got married to dancer Janaina Nattielle Viana Mendes, and has a son named João, who was born in February 2005.

The US Open starts on Monday and it looks like Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova have the best chances for the title. Let’s quickly review the recent action on the women’s tour and then look at the upcoming US Open, which is certainly one of the most exciting tournaments of the year.

Over the last 8 weeks the US Open Series was played out and Serena Williams ended up in first place in the US Open Series rankings. In case she wins the US Open tournament she would receive a $1 million dollar bonus on top of the regular prize money.

Serena is back to top form and did not lose a match in the US Open Series until pulling out of the second round in Cincinnati to rest a troublesome right big toe. She won the tournament in Stanford and the week after she won the Premier-level event in Toronto.

Since she won the US Open Series, Serena can now compete for the biggest paycheck in tennis history. If she wins the US Open she will collect $2.8 million dollars. She would get $1.8 million for winning the US Open, and a $1 million dollar bonus for winning both the US Open Series and the US Open. I believe this provides some extra motivation for Serena, especially since she hadn’t played for almost a year.

The other player next to Serena that I see with good chances to win the title is Maria Sharapova.

Sharapova has improved consistently over the last few months. I think she has been working really hard in order to put herself in position to contend for another major. She did well in the US Open Series, winning the Premiere-level event in Cincinnati and she also has the belief and the experience that are usually necessary to win a Grand Slam tournament. For her a lot depends on whether she gets her serve going or not.

The rest of the field is pretty wide open but I see a small group of players with outsider chances to win the title:

Vera Zvonareva has good memories from last year's US Open where she reached the finals. The fast surface suits her flat shots very well and she also played pretty solid since Wimbledon.

Agnieszka Radwanska has done really well in the US Open Series, finishing in a tied second place, and she seems to be playing very good tennis right now. Nevertheless she has never gone past the quarterfinals of a major and it will have to be seen whether she is mentally ready to contend for a Grand Slam title.

Andrea Petkovic has been improving on a consistent basis. She reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and French Open this year. I don’t think she was mentally ready to take it a step further, but she might be now with a little more experience.

Sam Stosur has a very dangerous game on a fast court with her big serve and big forehand. After going through somewhat of a slump earlier in the year she has shown some strong form recently, reaching the finals of the Toronto event. She has also been to a Grand Slam final and knows what it’s like.

Sabine Lisicki surprised many people by reaching the Wimbledon semifinals this year. Most experts in the circuit were long aware though that she has a great game and the ability to beat anybody in the world if she can stay mentally tough. In addition, this weekend she won the Texas Tennis Open.

Caroline Wozniacki the number 1 player in the world, because she seems to be out of form. She was victorious at the New Haven Open, but had not won a single match in the US Open Series previously. I doubt that she has the game at the moment to compete for the title at the US Open.It's interesting thing to note that Serena Williams is seeded at number 28. The tournament officials decided to seed her according to her ranking and not make an exception because she was injured for so long.

Serena and Maria are in opposite halves so that would make a final between the two possible. Serena could also face number 4 seed, Victoria Azarenka, in the third round already, which I am sure Azarenka is not very happy about.

U.S. Open Tennis rocked by Venus shock withdrawal

Venus Williams quit the U.S. Open on Wednesday, revealing that she was suffering from a chronic illness that could threaten her future in the sport.

After a week when the last grand slam of the year was threatened by an earthquake then a hurricane, this was perhaps the biggest shock of all.

The two-time U.S. Open champion told officials she was withdrawing from the tournament less than an hour before she was due to play Germany's Sabine Lisicki in the second round.

Then she dropped the bombshell, revealing for the first time exactly what had kept her off the courts for months.

"I have recently been diagnosed with Sjogren's Syndrome," she said in a statement.

"(I) wish I could continue but right now I am unable to."

The disease drains people of their energy and causes joint pain. For a professional tennis player, that spells trouble but Williams said she had no thoughts of retiring.

"I am thankful I finally have a diagnosis and am now focused on getting better and returning to the court soon," she said.

The American was not the only high-profile casualty at Flushing Meadows on Wednesday but her illness did overshadow most of the on-court action.

Andy Murray, Britain's great perennial hope, made a bright start to his campaign while Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro made a successful return two years after his stunning title success.

Three seeded women made early exits at the hands of lower-ranked players. Marion Bartoli, Dominika Cibulkova and Yanina Wickmayer all departed while the only male seed to lose was Nicolas Almagro of Spain, although Robin Soderling, seeded sixth, pulled out because of injury.

The Swede had been regarded as one of the few players able to challenge the big four of Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, but threw in the towel before his first round match.

Murray launched his campaign with a 7-6 6-2 6-3 victory over Somdev Devvarman of India. The Scotsman played below his best but still had plenty in reserve.

"It's all about just winning," Murray said. "That's all that matters at the end of the day."

Del Potro upset Federer to win the men's title two years ago but was unable to defend it because of a wrist injury that sidelined him for nearly nine months.

On Wednesday, he finally made it back and the towering Argentine was in a hurry to make up for lost time, crushing Italy's Filippo Volandri 6-3 6-1 6-1.

"It's my favourite tournament," Del Potro said. "I'm really happy to get the opportunity to play here again."

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are always among the fan’s favorites each time they compete. The 93rd PGA Championship will be no exception. The two best-known golfers in the world can expect to have some solid support when they tee it up at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek.

Woods and Mickelson were mentioned more often than any other players by some of the golfers interviewed while enjoying 18 holes on Friday at Rivermont Golf and Country Club in Johns Creek. While other competitors were mentioned, it was Tiger and Phil who drew the most pre-tournament attention.

“I’m always pulling for Tiger,” said Sidney Conn of Johns Creek. “He’s the best that’s ever played and I want to see him come back and play at the same level.”

Richard Gomez of Dunwoody said, “I’m pulling for him to start up again here.”

Woods tied for 29th at the 2001 PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club, his chances dashed that year by a first-round 73. He has four PGA Championships among his 14 major championships. He returned to tournament golf last week after being idle since April while recovering from knee surgery.

Mickelson was runner-up in 2001, losing to David Toms by one shot. Mickelson’s score was the second-lowest all-time in the PGA Championship. He had that one stolen when Toms made a hole-in-one during the third round and made a gutsy par on the 72nd hole after intentionally laying up. Mickelson has gone on to win four major championships, including the 2005 PGA Championship.

“I like Phil,” said Tim Puffer of Roswell. “I love his attitude, his demeanor and the way he interacts with the fans.” Puffer and Mickelson also share a common trait – both attended Arizona State University.

Mike Ray of Atlanta, who works in the golf industry, also picked Mickelson. “He finished second there the last time and he’s playing pretty good.”

Other players mentioned frequently were Adam Scott, the young Australian who was second at the Masters this spring, and newly crowned U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy.

“Just for the irony of it, I’d like to see Adam Scott,” said Jeff Kohlman of Johns Creek, who was referring to the new partnership between Scott and Steve Williams, the former caddie for Tiger Woods who was recently fired. “I think he’s a good player who will be able to deal with everything.”

There was also a segment who was pulling for a player from the region.

Dave Morrison of Cumming said, “I think it’s going to be a Southerner, someone used to the heat and used to playing in these conditions. Maybe someone like Matt Kuchar.”

Ed Godshall of Dunwoody agreed with the Southern flavor, but chose former Clemson star and Sea Island resident Jonathan Byrd. “He’s about due for a great tournament.”

None of the players interviewed selected defending PGA champion Martin Kaymer, who won last year’s tournament at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis.
