Download , Installation and Configuration of jdk on Kali Linux

Download

1) Open the URL

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/java-se-6u24-download-338091.html

2) Download the file jdk-6u24-linux-i586.bin
(so this file is stored in Home folder otherwise place it in Home folder)

Installation

1) Open terminal

<user that logged in>@<computer's hostname>:~#

What you see here is called the prompt. It signifies that the computer is ready and awaiting user input. ~ is the current directory (the user's home directory).

2) For example you are login as

root@localhost:~#

3) Run the command as
root@localhost:~#bash ../ jdk-6u24-linux-i586.bin

                           Bash is a sh-compatible command language interpreter that    executes commands read from the standard input or from a file.

4)             Run the command as

root@localhost:~# exit

Configuration

5) Open terminal

6) Run the command as
root@localhost:~# ln –s jdk1.6.0_24 jdk

The ln –s shell command normally uses the symlink system call,

which creates a symbolic link. jdk1.6.0_24[target_path]

is the relative or absolute path to which the symbolic link should point.

Usually the target will exist, although symbolic links may be

created to non-existent targets. jdk [link_path] is the path of the symbolic link.

7) Run the command as
root@localhost:~# ls –l

8) Run the command as
root@localhost:~# cd ..

9) Run the command as
root@localhost:~# nautilus .

 Redirect to the current directory console.

10) Click on view⟶show hidden files

11) Right click on file bashrc & open with Text Editor.

12) Set the environment variables with following lines type in last.

export JAVA_HOME=$HOME/jdk

  export PATH=.:$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH

13) Save it.

14) Run the command as

     root@localhost:~# exit

15) Open terminal

16) Run the command as

 root@localhost:~# java -version

These commands display what version of java (the interpreter that runs Java programs) and javac (the compiler that creates them) you have installed.

You are getting screen as below.

How to remove error: Your intltool is too old You need intltool 0.35.0 or later

First download intltool 0.35.0 or later from here -> Gotodownloadaddress

Now just follow following steps:

Place the downloaded file in Home directory.
Open terminal
Type following command

tar xvf intltool-0.35.5.tar.gz

(It will extract files and create a folder in home directory)

I had downloaded intltool-0.35.5.tar.gz file so, you can change name as per your downloaded version of file.

Follow given steps to install this package :

1. `cd intltool-0.35.5'

       to move the directory containing the package's source code and type
     `./configure' to configure the package for your system. If you're
     using `csh' on an old version of System V, you might need to type
     `sh ./configure' instead to prevent `csh' from trying to execute
     `configure' itself.

     Running `configure' takes awhile. While running, it prints some
     messages telling which features it is checking for.

2. Type `make' to compile the package.

3. Optionally, type `make check' to run any self-tests that come with
     the package.

4. Type `make install' to install the programs and any data files and
     documentation.

5. You can remove the program binaries and object files from the
      source code directory by typing `make clean'.
      To also remove the files that `configure' created
      (so you can compile the package for a different kind of computer),
      type `make distclean'. There is also a `make maintainer-clean' target,
    but that is intended mainly for the package's developers.
If you use it, you may have to get all sorts of other programs in
      order to regenerate files that came with the distribution.

How to install OpenOffice in Kali Linux

First download Apache OpenOffice and place its downloaded file in home directory.

Now open terminal and write command
tar xvf filename.tar.gz
(It will extract files and create a folder in home directory)
In my case I got folder named en-US

Now move to that folder by typing command
cd en-US

Now move to another sub-folder by typing command
cd DEBS

Now write following command
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Now move to another sub-folder by typing command
cd desktop-integration

Now write following command
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Done...!!!

Now go and check your installation :
Go to Applications->Ofice->OpenOffice

KDE is an international free software community producing an integrated set of cross-platform applications designed to run on Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, Microsoft Windows, and OS X systems. It is known for its Plasma Desktop, a desktop environment provided as the default working environment on many Linux distributions, such as openSUSE, Mageia and Kubuntu and is default desktop environment on PC-BSD, a BSD operating system.

apt-get install kali-defaults kali-root-login desktop-base kde-plasma-desktop

Command to install Netbook KDE Plasma Desktop Environment in Kali Linux:

apt-get install kali-defaults kali-root-login desktop-base kde-plasma-netbook

Command to install Standard Debian selected packages and frameworks in Kali Linux:
apt-get install kali-defaults kali-root-login desktop-base kde-standard

Command to install KDE Full Install in Kali Linux:

Install/Remove GNOME Desktop Environment in Kali Linux

I have also written article on how to install/remove KDE Desktop Environments in Kali Linux now this is another article.
GNOME is a desktop environment which is composed entirely of free and open-source software and targets to be cross-platform, i.e. run on multiple operating systems, its main focus being those based on the Linux kernel.
In the default configuration of GNOME, the desktop has a top panel holding (from left to right) an activities button, clock, system status area and user menu. Clicking on the activities button or moving one's mouse to the top-left hot corner brings one to the overview.

The system status area holds various system indicators, such as those for volume, Bluetooth, network, battery, and accessibility.
The user menu holds a chat-availability indicator, shortcuts to system settings, and session actions such as logging out, switching users, locking the screen, or suspending the computer.
The overview (accessed by clicking on the activities button in the top panel, or touching the top-left hot corner) shows the window picker, the workspace changer on the right, the dash on the left, a windows button, an applications button, and a search bar. While in the overview, users can click on the windows and application buttons just under the top panel to switch between the window picker and the application picker.
The window picker gives users a quick overview of current activities, and provides a way to switch to other open windows or close multiple windows easily.
The application picker provides an easy way to launch applications.
The dash houses shortcuts to favorite applications and open windows.

How to Fix PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions … (warning) in Kali Linux and Debian

PulseAudio is a free cross-platform network sound server, targeting mostly POSIX-compliant operating systems meaning that it is a proxy for your sound applications. It allows you to do advanced operations on your sound data as it passes between your application and your hardware. Things like transferring the audio to a different machine, changing the sample format or channel count and mixing several sounds into one are easily achieved using a sound server.

PulseAudio is available in recent versions of several major linux distributions such as Kali Linux and debian.

The Warning Message during boot

My Kali Linux shows me this warning:

[warn] PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions ... (warning).

NOTE-Debian variants also shows similar warning during boot.

To fix this problem do as follows:

Open terminal and copy the following

leafpad /etc/default/pulseaudio

Find this line:

PULSEAUDIO_SYSTEM_START=0

Replace 0 with 1

PULSEAUDIO_SYSTEM_START=1

where,
0 = don’t start in system mode, 1 = start in system mode

Finally Reboot(Restart)

How to unzip file in Kali Linux or any Linux

.ZIP is an archive file format that supports lossless data compression.
A .ZIP file may contain one or more files or folders that may have been compressed.

Use following commands to unzip a file:

unzip command is used to extract all the files of a zip archive to your current directory

unzip filename.zip

You can also test the .zip file ( i.e. make sure its OK or not) by the following command.
The command prints a summary message indicating whether it is usable or broken

unzip -tq filename.zip

To extract an individual file from a zip archive

( Let us suppose the name of the file as fun.doc)

unzip filename.zip fun.txt

Extract all files of the zip into the /tmp directory

unzip filename.zip -d /tmp

List the files of the archive without unzipping them
unzip -l filename.zip

How to open RAR File or extract RAR Files under Linux or UNIX

RAR files are in compressed archive format, if you have downloaded rar files from the Internet, you need to unpack or unrar them (extract rar files). RAR is a proprietary file format for data compression and archiving. The command used to extract these files is called "unrar". By default, unrar is not being installed on Linux, FreeBSD or UNIX like operating system. You can install unrar command with the help of apt-get or yum command.

Note- Kali Linux users can directly use unrar command as it is pre-installed in it.

Install unrar command

Under Debian(Kali) or Ubuntu Linux, you need to type apt-get command as follows to install unrar program:
# apt-get install unrar

If you are using Fedora core Linux / CentOS / RHEL, use yum command as follows :
# yum install unrar

If you are using FreeBSD, enter:
# pkg_add -v -r unrar

If any of above, methods is not working for you, download binary package from official rarlab site:

$ cd /tmp
 $ wget http://www.rarlab.com/rar/rarlinux-3.6.0.tar.gz

Next, untar file, enter:
$ tar -zxvf rarlinux-3.6.0.tar.gz

Both unrar and rar commands are located in rar sub-directory. Just cd to rar directory, type:

$ cd rar
 $ ./unrar

Now copy rar and unrar file to /bin directory, type:
# cp rar unrar /bin

How To Use unrar Command

The unrar command supports various options, below are common options that you need to for extracting files.

Extract rar (unpack) File

To extract file.rar file into the current directory, enter:
$ unrar e file.rar

List (l) file inside rar archive

$ unrar l file.rar

To extract (x) files with full path type command

$ unrar x file.rar

To test (t) integrity of archive

$ unrar t file.rar

How to fix sound mute problem in Kali Linux on boot

If you have installed Kali Linux successfully then you already know that the sound option is mute or disabled at the boot. No matter what you do, next time you restart Kali Linux, you will again have sound mute in Kali Linux on boot. You might want to start Kali Linux with a great sound effect or you probably spend a few moments to unmute sound and then turn on the volume. After sometime, this gets annoying and you start searching solution for it on google and ended up here. So let’s not wait more and fix this issue once and for all.

Follow the steps below to fix sound mute in Kali Linux on boot :

Go to Applications > System Tools > Preferences > System Settings > Sound

Now you should see the following screen:

Use the Output volume slider to ON, shown similar to the screenshot above. That’s it you are done. Close Sound window.

Now just restart you Kali Linux & you are done.
