Aadi Masam – Tamil Month Aadi
Aadi Masam is the fourth month in Tamil Calendar and Dakshinayana Punyakalam, the night time of Gods, begins in the Aadi month. Numerous unique Tamil prayers and festivals are also observed during Aadi month on this auspicious month.

In some regions newly married couples stay separate during Aadi month. This is because in earlier days it was considered that if a woman conceives (get pregnant) in Aadi month, she will deliver in March or April the hottest months. This would put the life of mother and child in danger. But this custom is not followed by many people today.
Dakshinayana Punyakalam, the night of Devas, begins on the first day of the month Aadi. The sun changes its direction during this period and next six months is the night time of the gods and ends with Uttarayan in January. Due to this reason, no auspicious events are held in the month.

Numerous rituals are held in Aadi month:
Tuesdays in the month Aadi is highly auspicious and is referred as Aadi Chevvai.

Fridays in the month is dedicated to Goddess worship and is known as Aadi Velli.

The Karthigai Nakshatram day in Aadi month is observed as Aadi Karthigai and is dedicated to Muruga.

Aadi Amavasai or no moon day in the month is dedicated to performing rites dedicated to dead ancestors.

Aadi 18 Perukku a festival associated River Cauvery is observed on the 18th day of Aadi month.

Another important festival in the month is the Andal Pooram dedicated to Shri Andal an ardent devotee and Sri Ranganatha.

Varalakshmi Puja, a popular observance by women, is also observed in the Aadi month. The Friday that comes before the Full Moon, or Pournami day, of Aadi month is chosen to perform Varamahalakshmi Puja.

Nine Forms Of Mata Durga Devi

Mata Shailputri – First Durga :
Mata Shailputri is a daughter of ‘Parvata raju’ (mountain king) – Himalaya / Himvanth. She is the first among nine avatars of Durga. In her previous birth, she was ‘Sati Bhavani Mata’, the daughter of King Daksha. Mata Shailputri, also known as Parvati – Hemavati, got married with Lord Shiva. On the first day of Durga Navratri, she is worshipped. Mata Shailputri holds a ‘Trishul’, a weapon, in her right hand and a lotus in her left hand. She rides on bull. She has pleasant smile and blissful looks.

Mata Brahmacharini – Second Durga :
Mata Brahmacharini is the second Durga Shakti. Brahmacharini is the goddess who performed ‘Tapa’ (penance) (Brahma = Tapa , Charini = Performer ). Ma Brahmacharini’s idol is very gorgeous. She holds a rosary in her right hand and Kamandal in left hand. She is also called as ‘Uma’ and ‘Tapacharini’. She performed penance to get married with Lord Shambhu (Shiva). She is worshipped on the second day of Navratri.

Mata Chandraghanta – Third Durga :
Mata Chadraghanta is the third Shakti. She is very bright and charming. She has golden colored complexion. She has three eyes to watch ‘Triloka’ (three worlds). In her ten hands, she holds Trishul, Gadha, Sword, Chakra, Kamandal, Lotus, Bell, Arrow, Bow etc. weapons. She rides on Lion and ready for going in war to fight. She is considered as an image for bravery. The horrible sound of her bell terrifies all demons and danavas. She is worshipped on the third day of Navratri.

Mata Kushmanda – Fourth Durga :
Mata Kushmanda is the fourth Shakti. She shines brightly with a laughing face in all ten directions as the Sun. She controls whole Solar system. In her eight hands, she holds several types of weapons in six hands and a rosary and a lotus in remaining hands. She rides on Lion. She likes offerings of ‘Kumhde’, hence her name ‘Kushmanda’ has become popular. Kushmanda Devi is worshipped on the fourth day of Navratri.

Ma Skanda Mata – Fifth Durga :
Skanda Mata is the fifth Shakti. The daughter of King Himalaya (Himvanth), after observing panance got amrried with Lord Shankar (Shiva). She had a son – ‘Skanda’. Skanda is known for his courage and is a leader of the army of Gods. Skanda Mata is considered as a deity of fire. She holds Skanda in her lap. She rides on Lion. In some sources, she is pictured – seating on lotus. She has three eyes and four hands. She holds lotuses in two hands. Devotees worship Skanda Mata on the fifth day of Navratri.

Mata Katyayani – Sixth Durga :
Mata Katyayani is the sixth Shakti. Rishi Katyayan observed a penance to get Jaganmata as his daughter. She blessed him and took birth as his daughter on the bank of river Jamuna for getting Lord Krishna as a husband. She is considered as prime deity of Vraj mandal. Ma Katyayani has three eyes and four hands. She rides on Lion. Katyayani Devi is worshipped on the sixth day of Navratri.

Mata Kalratri – Seventh Durga :
Mata Kalaratri is the seventh Shakti. She is dark and black like night, hence she is called as ‘Kalratri’. Her hairs are unlocked and sha wears a necklace which is shining like lightning. She has three eyes and four hands. Her eyes are bright and wide opened. She spills out fire from her nostrils. Her vehicle is donkey. She holds a sharp Sword in her right hand. She blesses her devotees with her lower hand. She holds a burning torch in her left hand. She makes her devotees fearless with her lower left hand which is in fearless pose. As she blesses her devotees with prosperity, she is also called as ‘Shubhamkari’. Kalratri Devi is worshipped on the seventh day of Navratri.

Mata Maha Gauri – Eighth Durga :
Mata Maha Gowri is the eighth Shakti. She is worshipped on the eighth day of Navratri. Maha Gauri looks as white as moon and jasmine. She is a girl of eight years old. She has white clothes and ornaments. She has three eyes and four hands. Her vehicle is bull. Her above left hand is in fearless pose and she holds ‘Trishul’ in her lower left hand. Her above right hand has tambourine and lower right hand is in blessing mudra.

Mata Siddhidatri – Ninth Durga :
Mata Siddhidatri is the ninth Shakti. Maha Shakti gives all the eight siddhis – Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakamya, Iishitva and Vashitva. According to ‘Devi Puran’, the supreme God Shiva got all these siddhis by worshipping the supreme Goddess Maha Shakti. With her gratitude, his half body has become of Goddess, hence Lord Shiva’s name ‘Ardhanarishvar’ has become famous. According to some sources she drives on Lion. Other sources say, she is seated on lotus. Siddhidatri Devi is worshipped by all Gods, Rushis, Muniswaras, Siddha yogis, and all common devotees who want to attain the religious asset. Goddess Siddhidatri is worshipped on the ninth and final day of Navratri.

Nine Days of Navratri

'Nava-ratri' is one of the most important Hindu festivals in the country. It is celebrated with immense zeal and enthusiasm all over the country. It is celebrated twice a year -once in Chaitra (March-April) and the other in Ashwin (September-October). Navartra literally means 'nine auspicious nights'. It is actually the worship of the Goddess of power in order to seek her protection from any possible kind of threat and calamities that may destroy the peaceful life of people on earth. As she is the goddess of power, she is believed to have the power of creation, preservation and destruction.

Nine Days Navaratri Celebrations
Navaratri is separated into sets of three days i.e. into three sets. These sets are made in order to adore different facets of the supreme goddess. On the initial three days, the Goddess is invoked as the supreme powerful force called Durga. Goddess Durga is meant to all our contaminations, evils and defects. On the next three days, she is worshipped as the mother of spiritual wealth, Goddess Lakshmi, She is the one who is considered to have the power of showering on her devotees with the blessings of never-ending wealth. In the final set of three days, the Goddess is worshipped as the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. The one is responsible for spiritual enlightenment and overall success in life.

She is also worshipped under nine different names for the nine days in Navratri. Every day, she assumes a new character, a new look and a new duty. She is worshipped as Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skanda Mata, Katyayani, Kalratri, Maha Gauri and Siddhidatri. For the initial six the Pooja celebrations are limited to home. The celebrations acquire a festive form since the seventh day when the festivities of Navratri surround the atmosphere.

First Day Pooja
The first form of Goddess Durga is called Shailputri . She is considered the daughter of the Himalayas. She is a form of Shakti, the consort of Lord Shiva.

Second Day Pooja
The second form of Goddess Durga is known as 'Brahmacharini'. Her name is derivative of the word 'Brahma', which means 'Tapa' or penace. She is also a form of Uma or Parvati, a form of Mata Shakti.

Third Day Pooja
On the third day the goddess is worshipped as Chandraghanta. She is the symbolic representation of beauty and bravery.

Fourth Day Pooja
Kushmanda, is the form of the goddess which is worshipped on the fourth day. It is believed that Kushmanda is the creator of the entire Universe and she has created the entire Universe by her laugh.

Fifth Day Pooja
On the fifth day, the form of Goddess is called Skand Mata. She is actually called so because she is here represented as the mother of Skanda, the chief warrior of the Gods army.

Sixth Day Pooja
On the sixth day, the goddess is worshipped as Katyayani. Seated on her vehicle lion, Katyayani has three eyes and four hands.

Seventh Day Pooja
On the seventh day, the Goddess is worshipped as 'Kalratri'. As the name suggests, Kalrati is as black as a dark night. She has four hands, she is meant to make the devotees fearless.

Eighth Day Pooja
On the eight day, the Mata Rani is worshipped as 'Maha Gauri'. She is considered to extremely beautiful, white like snow and accessorized with white colored ornaments. She represents calmness and exhibits wisdom.

Ninth Day Pooja
On the ninth day, Durga is worshipped as Siddhidatri. It is believed she consists of all the eight siddhis. She lives on lotus and is worshipped by all the Rishis-Munis, Siddhas, Sadhakas and Yogis.

One of the legends of Karuppaswamy

Following is the story heard by word-of-mouth from the pujaris or Sami aadis in Alagar Kovil, Madurai.

Lord Rama had sent Sita to the forest when she was pregnant and lived in Saint Valmiki's Ashram.

While in the Ashram, She brought a male heir of Rama to the world.

One day when she was going out for some chores of the Ashram, she asked the Saint to take care of her child in the cradle. The Saint was watching the child and meanwhile went into a deep meditation. When Sita returned, she found that the Saint was in meditation and didn't want to disturb him to tell him that she was taking her child.

When the Saint was out of the meditation, he found the child missing. So he put some holy grass (Dherbai) in the cradle and with his mantra he made that as a child.

Later when he found that Sita was having her real child, he was so confused and asked Sita to treat the new baby also as her own child.

When Sita was returning to Rama, he was expecting only one male heir. But to his astonishment, he found two boys (Lavan and Kushan) approaching him. Again to test the purity of the boys, he set a fire and asked the boys to cross the fire to reach him. He told that whoever was his real heir would cross the fire unscathed. Unknowingly the boy brought up by the Saint, stuck in the middle of the fire and burnt his body becoming very dark.

Finally, Rama got to know what had happened in the forest to have two boys instead of one. Then he blessed the burnt boy to become his escort god (kaval deivam) and called him “Karuppannan” which became Karuppa Sami.

That was the reason why Karuppa Sami put the sacred tri-strips (Thiru Namam) on his forehead. And also I heard that while calling the deity, the pujaris sing that “Dherbaiyil pirandhavane (born from the holy grass)”.

Temple

The Karuppanar Kovil (or a shrine) is always found in the outskirts of the Village. The maintenance of the temple is taken care of by the whole of the village.

His temple is usually in the open space and will not have traditional Gopurams like any other temples. You can see big statues of Gods with weapons like bow and arrow, swords, knives and other protective weapons alongside Him. There will also be statues of other Goddesses (7 Kannimaar or the 7 Virgins) called as saptha Kannimar in His temples. Animals, often signifying His pets - a dog (Vettai Naai or a hunting dog), a lion and His ride - the white Horse are also found.

Statues of Karuppu Sami are often black in colour and adorned with chains. He will usually be holding a sword, sometimes with bells attached. Often, as part of his worship, a cigar will be lit and placed in the Deity's mouth. He is also offered alcohol.

Karuppu Sami is often worshipped alongside Madurai Veeran and Muneeswarar.

The most famous temple for Karuppasamy is located at Azhaghar Koil, near Madurai. This is considered as the most important of the Karappannaswamy temples. Here he is worshipped as Pathinettampadi Raja Karuppannaswamy. There is no idol here. Only an Aruval at the top of eighteen steps. Hence the name Pathinettampadi.

Worship

Karuppanar worship is a very ancient ancestral clan-based worship system. Most officiating priests are non-Brahmins and derive from local lineages that had initiated the cult generations ago.

The worship pattern is non-Vedic or non-Agamic through Folk tales, Folk songs and Folk arts (Villu pattu, Karagam, Koothhu, etc.). The local priest might offer flowers or Veeputhi (holy ash) or Holy flowers to the worshippers and may play the role of an oracle for Shamanism. Various persons within the clan system are identified to play to the role of oracle on annual turn basis. They undertake vradham and maintain chastity and purity during the period of vradham. During the festivals, oracles get into trance state (Saami aadudhal) and deliver counselling messages to the group assembled there without bias. The normal problems addressed are family problems, financial troubles and local community and social issues for resolving within the community group with the agreement of local ancestral god through oracle.

Whenever the wishes of the people are granted, they give their offerings to Him based on what they vowed to offer.

Annual Festival

The village committee would decide on when the Annual mass convention be conducted. The time of the year when this would fall varies with villages and their local customs - each of which will be associated a folk-lore. Generally, the mass convention assembly of a large number of related family members is organized during the spring season for a period of 2 to 3 days.

The commencement of the festival will be with that of a hoisting of the flag and tying the "Kaappu." After this time, villagers cannot go out of the village but can come in from a different village.

During this annual gathering, a large number of goats and chicken are sacrificed for Lord Karuppanar. He is also offered Beedis (country - made cigarettes) or cigars and Naravam (toddy = locally instilled alcohol) or some form of modern alcohol.

One interesting fact of special mention is the belief of the village people that the Karuppu Sami is being disguised in the form of the priest called as Marulali who is asked to predict the future. This belief system about Karuppu samy is called the Arul vaaku or Saamiyaaduthal in several parts of Tamil Nadu. The social issues will be discussed through these temple fore-tellers (also called as Kodangi) whom the people usually consider as the voice of the Karuppa sami deity. When Lord Karuppa Sami addresses the people in different villages through the Kodangi, different issues and dimensions on the social, cultural and psychological aspects of the village and the society are reviewed for possible solutions.
