Facebook is working on a dark mode version of its Android app

Facebook is developing a dark mode version of its Android app.

This is according to researcher Jane Manchun Wong (via Android Police), who dug into the app's code and discovered some parts of the app have been reworked to have a dark background.

The bad news is that the dark mode appears to be in early stages of development, with only some screens in the app being anything close to finished, meaning it could take a while until we actually see the finished product.

Check out the image below to see some elements of Facebook's UI in (unfinished) dark mode.

The dark mode version of Facebook's app appears to be far from finished, but at least Facebook is working on it.

Facebook's Messenger got a dark mode version in March, but the main Facebook app remained blindingly white. Given it's among the most popular apps around, an option to enable dark mode and save your eyes as well as battery life would be very welcome.

USB inventor regrets making them so difficult to plug in correctly

While plugging plug a mouse, a phone, or a thumb drive into your computer, you try to stick the USB into its slot, only to find it stopping prematurely. You flip it around, but it still won't go in. So you flip it back to the original position and it slides in without a hitch.

We've all been there, and the inventor of the USB sees our pain.

Ajay Bhatt, the leader behind the IBM team that gave us the USB in the mid-'90s, revealed in an interview with NPR Friday that he is well aware of the annoyances the public has with USB, or Universal Serial Bus, but there's a reason it's designed the way it is.

"The biggest annoyance is reversibility," Bhatt told NPR. He's got that right.

"Of course it was not as easy as it should be"

For outsiders, it seems like designing the USB so it can be reversible would be an easy fix to everyone's problems, so no matter which way you stick it in it's a success. Bhatt told NPR that would have doubled the cost of the technology, requiring double the wires and circuits.

Another option that the Intel team floated was a round design, but that would have been even more difficult to plug in correctly.

Although the rectangle design we all know was ultimately chosen and adopted by pretty much every hardware manufacturer since Apple first put USB ports into its computers in 1998, Bhatt acknowledges that there may have been a better way.

"In hindsight, based on all the experiences that we all had, of course it was not as easy as it should be," Bhatt said.

But what is life without a little bit of suffering?

There are alternatives to the classic USB, such as the much newer USB-C, which is reversible, but it hasn't been widely adopted yet. Maybe someday it will be as ubiquitous as the original USB and the days of somehow failing twice at a 50-50 shot of plugging something in will be a thing of the past, talked about in the way we talk about VHS tapes, landlines, and existing within a livable climate

Apple now sells a smart bike helmet with an LED turn signal

Bike commuters do a lot to make drivers notice them.

They slap reflectors on their clothes, install lights on their bikes, and put on neon yellow vests. Now they can use turn signals like a car.

Apple started selling Lumos Matrix helmets in its stores and online Wednesday. They come in two colors — white and black — and retail for $249.95.

The Lumos Matrix reimagines the function of helmets for today’s electric scooter and bike riders, co-founder and CEO Eu-wen Ding says.

“Design is really about solving human problems, but no one is really looking at [the commuters’] problems,” Ding says. “What the traditional guys are trying to solve is, ‘How can we make this super lightweight? How can we make this super aerodynamic?' We are asking different questions: ‘How can we make a helmet that has a lot of lights, that can be seen from far away, and that drivers can recognize?’”

In addition to a bright front light, the helmet has a 7x11 dot-matrix, animated LED panel on its rear to signal turns and brakes to drivers — an upgrade from the static display of Lumo's previous helmets. It also has a new sleek, streamlined design.

Bikers can activate the lights with a simple touchpad that can be attached to their bike handlebars or an Apple Watch app that automatically detects hand signals. A mobile app allows users to adjust the lights’ brightness and flash frequency; it even offers users a new option to customize the animation displayed on the rear panel.

Overall, there were more than 800,000 daily bike commuters and more than 84 million trips taken on shared bikes and scooters last year in the U.S. alone, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Association of City Transportation Officials.

The Lumos Matrix comes with an app that allows users to adjust the lights' brightness and flash frequency.

At the heart of the Lumos Matrix, Ding says, is the vision of a helmet that anticipates the needs of our contemporary urban landscape.

“Helmets have been around for a very long time, but they haven’t really changed fundamentally in 20, 30 years,” Ding says. “We want to come up with ideas that embody the next-generation helmet. The helmet has done a great job of being a form of protection; we’re trying to add to that by saying it’s not just protection but also prevention.”

Huawei launches the nova 5T in the UAE

Huawei has unveiled the nova 5T, its latest budget flagship smartphone, taking aim at the millennial segment as it aims to grow its market share in the MENA region.

At an event in Dubai today, Huawei announced that the nova 5T will be able for pre-order in the UAE starting October 22, and for sale starting October 31 at a retail price of AED1,599.

The nova 5T will be available in 3 color variants— black, blue, and a flagship purple that comes with a new nova monogram pattern.

As with most Huawei phones, it is the camera setup that needs to be talked about first and most.

The Android-powered 5T comes with four rear cameras, including a 48MP HD lens, 16MP wide-angle lens, 2MP macro lens, and 2MP bokeh lens. This camera setup is complemented by features such as AI Image Stabilization, Super Night Mode, AI HDR+ backlit photo, Auto Exposure Lock and Auto Focus Lock.

On the video front, Huawei has added features such as AI Portrait Color, which adds a cinematic effect of a greyscale background with only the subject in full color, as well as Super Slow-Mo, which shoots at a 960 fps.

There is, of course, the fifth camera—a 32MP AI Selfie camera with 4-in-1 Pixel fusion and AI HDR+ features.

The nova 5T, which comes with a 6.26-inch HUAWEI Punch FullView Display, uses the EMUI 9.1 operating system, which is powered by the premium Kirin 980 AI processor and 8GB of RAM. This is supported by 128GB of storage for storing what predictably could be large amounts of photos and videos.

The nova 5T supports fast charging—its 22.5W SuperCharge technology can quickly charge the phone’s large 3750 mAh battery. The nova 5T also packs Histen 6.0, Huawei's third-generation headset 3D audio technology, which supports 9.1 channel for a 3D audio experience.

Elon Musk says monster Tesla seen on racetrack will go into production by summer 2020

Tesla is back at Nürburgring.

Two Tesla Model S cars have been spotted (via Teslarati) on the legendary German race track, and while there are no official lap times for them yet, the cars themselves are interesting.

Back in September, when Tesla cars were first spotted at Nürburgring, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that their (unofficial) track times will be "beaten by the actual production 7 seat Model S Plaid variant that goes into production around Oct/Nov next year."

While we can't say whether they're 7- or 5-seaters, the new Tesla cars seen whizzing on the race track (see video below) have some new features, including air vents on the front and a big rear diffuser (only on the blue Model S, though).

Again, Elon Musk chimed in on Twitter to say that the final configuration that will be used at the racetrack is the car that will actually go into production by summer 2020.

It's unclear, however, whether the production version will be configurable to have all the details we've seen on these cars in Germany, including the wide body kit, spoilers, air vents, and diffusors.

Tesla's mission at Nürburgring is quite simple: The company is trying to beat the 7:42 Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time recently set by Porsche's electric Taycan, and — if possible — take some kind of crown there, perhaps for the fastest electric sedan. Last month, Tesla allegedly did the lap in 7:23, but that's not an officially measured result.

Meanwhile, a Porsche Taycan Turbo S beat a Tesla Model S P100D in a drag race, though it's worth noting that we don't know what kind of tires were used on either car. The rivalry lives on.

The fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S10, and potentially other

Samsung phones, can be defeated with a $3.46 case — but the company is already working on a fix.

The somewhat horrifying news comes via The Sun, which spoke to a British couple who discovered the bug. After fitting her Samsung Galaxy S10 in a cheap silicone case that covered the front and back of the phone, she realized that her husband was able to unlock it with ease, even though his fingerprint wasn't registered on the device.

According to Reuters, Samsung said on Thursday that it's aware of the issue and will roll out a fix "soon."

The company claims that the issue stems from the fingerprint scanner recognizing a pattern on the silicone phone case along with the fingerprint.

It's unclear which phones are affected, but given that the S10, S10+ and the Note 10 all use an in-display, ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, it's quite possible that all these devices suffer from the same issue.

This is not the first issue with Samsung phones' ultrasonic fingerprint scanners. In April, it was discovered that they can be fooled with a 3D-printed fingerprint.

The issue is serious enough to prompt South Korea's KaKaobank to tell its customers to stop using the Galaxy S10's fingerprint scanner for logging into its services until the bug is fixed.

And even if you've never used a case on your Samsung phone, the issue is still worrying. A Samsung spokesperson told The Sun that the company recommends that users only use Samsung authorized accessories. But if a cheap plastic case is all it takes to defeat the system's security, one has to wonder if there are other bugs like this that haven't been discovered yet.

NASA's Mars InSight is unstuck and officially back to work

It was looking grim for NASA's Mars InSight mission back at the beginning of October. But now, things seem to have turned around.

The InSight lander had originally been sent to the Red Planet with the goal of drilling some 16 feet into the Martian terrain, to measure heat beneath the surface. But after only 14 inches of progress, there was a problem: the "mole" (aka drill with a built-in heat probe) would go no further.

It got stuck in Feb. 2019 and remained that way until early October, when NASA came up with a new plan. The idea was to use the InSight lander's metal scoop to refill the 14-inch hole and then act as a support for the mole to press up against as it tunneled down.

The whole scheme was based on an assumption that the below-ground hold-up was heavily clumped together soil, rather than rock. The scoop, then, would help guide the mole along by stopping it from bouncing around as it dug deeper. The pressure would be forced downward instead, which NASA hoped would break through the tough stretch of soil.

It seems to have worked, with NASA confirming that the mole is once again on the move. In the week leading to Oct. 17, the mole dug down an additional two centimeters. That might not sound like a lot, but NASA calls the progress "significant."

"Since Oct. 8, 2019, the mole has hammered 220 times over three separate occasions," NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Andrew Good wrote in a post on the agency's website. "Images sent down from the spacecraft's cameras have shown the mole gradually progressing into the ground. It will take more time — and hammering — for the team to see how far the mole can go."

The big takeaway from even this small amount of progress is that the hold-up was indeed tightly packed soil rather than rock, which would have halted the mole completely and likely doomed this aspect of InSight's mission. It's not a total success just yet, but the work is at least moving forward.

The minds at NASA are already working on additional strategies for coaxing an uncooperative mole to start moving again. If progress halts again, one idea involves piling dirt on top of the mole itself, which would have the effect of "adding mass to resist the mole's recoil."

Another approach would involve using the scoop to press down on the top of the mole and drive it in further, though that's not without its risks. The mole is connected to the InSight lander by a "sensitive tether," which provides power and moves data.

Of course, any progress on a mission that's been stalled since the start of the year is good news for NASA. We'll just have to wait and see if this small amount of progress translates into useful data
